Abstract
BACKGROUND Consumption of different types of beverages and liquid drugs can affect of the surface properties of restorative material. This may lead to an increased probability of dental caries and periodontal inflammation. AIM This study evaluated and compared the effect of amoxicillin suspension (AMS) and azithromycin suspension (AZS) on the surface roughness (SR) of silver-reinforced glass ionomer (SGI) and nano resin-modified glass ionomer (NGI). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty disks (2 mm height × 4 mm diameter) of each glass ionomer (GI) type were prepared and subdivided into three groups (n = 10), which were separately exposed to AMS, AZS, and artificial saliva (AS). SR was evaluated by atomic force microscopy before and after three-immersion protocols repeated over a 3-week duration with 2-day intervals. In each protocol, the GI samples were exposed weekly to AMS three times daily, AZS once daily, and a full day to AS. RESULTS This study demonstrated, for the first time, the effect of a basic drug (AZS) on the SR of GIs. Intra- and inter-group comparisons showed significant changes (P ˂ 0.05) in the SR pattern of the GIs after immersion cycles in AZS, AMS, and AS. However, the acidic medication (AMS) exhibited significantly higher changes in SGI than in NGI. CONCLUSIONS The SR of NGIs and SGIs can be significantly affected by the use of AMS and AZS suspensions. SGI demonstrated higher SR deterioration than NGI after immersion cycles in AMS.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) has been reported to have a remineralizing effect on early carious lesions. The objective of this scoping review was to analyze the remineralization potential of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)-containing dentifrices, by mapping the existing literature. (2) Methods: This review was performed using the PRISMA-ScR Checklist, which is an extension of the PRISMA Checklist for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. In this study, the population, concept, and context (PCC) framework was used to find relevant papers published between 2010 and 2021. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) and dentifrices containing nHAp as one of the ingredients were the two main concepts of the research question. MeSH phrases, keywords, and other free terms relevant to nano-hydroxyapatite and dentifrices were used to search the literature databases. (3) Results: Preliminary searches yielded 59 studies; the title and abstract screening results excluded 11 studies. The remaining studies were thoroughly reviewed by two reviewers on the basis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, 28 studies were included, and 20 studies were excluded. Most of the studies that were included reported that when nHAp was used alone, it had many different effects, such as remineralization, caries prevention, less demineralization, brighter teeth, less pain, and remineralization of enamel after orthodontic debonding. (4) Conclusions: Dentifrices that contain nHAp offer a variety of therapeutic and preventative effects. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of nHAp dentifrices in primary teeth. Additional long-term investigations using standardized protocols are required to reach decisive conclusions about the effects of nHAp dentifrices on primary and permanent dentitions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the effect of nano-hydroxyapatite serum and different finishing, polishing techniques on color alterations of enamel caused by debonding procedures after comprehensive orthodontic treatment by use of a spectrophotometer. METHODS This randomized clinical trial recruited 20 participants with previous non-extraction orthodontic treatment and acceptable hygiene to evaluate enamel staining after orthodontic debonding. The usage of a carbide bur alone, as the conventional method, and the combination use of carbide burs and Sof-Lex discs (3M™ ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) were compared to each other followed by 10 days application of nano-hydroxyapatite after debonding. Then the enamel staining was evaluated by a reflectance spectrophotometer in three periods: immediately, and 2 and 4 months after debonding. RESULTS The comparison of the groups showed a significant interaction between Sof-Lex groups and the control side after the first interval of the study (p = 0.042). Application of nano-hydroxyapatite demonstrated no significant difference in color parameters between upper and lower arches of the participants at all intervals of this study (p > 0.05). The mean total color change (ΔE) in all groups and between all intervals had been clinically perceptible (ΔE > 3.3). CONCLUSIONS The applied concentrations of nano-hydroxyapatite had no significant effect in reducing tooth color changes after debonding in orthodontic treatment. Sof-Lex discs can significantly reduce tooth color changes in a short time.

Abstract
Dissolution of hydroxyapatite from the tooth structure at low pH can lead to the irreversible destruction of enamel and dentin, which if left untreated can result in pain and tooth loss. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes contain hydroxyapatite particles in micro- or nanocrystalline form that have been shown to deposit and restore demineralized enamel surfaces. As such, they are currently being explored as a fluoride-free anti-caries agent. This narrative review article aims to summarize the recent findings of the research investigating the remineralization potential of HAP toothpaste in vitro, in situ and in vivo, as well as some other applications in dentistry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orthodontic debonding procedure produces inevitable enamel surface alterations, sequelae to which are enamel demineralization, sensitivity and retention of pigments. Several agents have been employed to counterbalance the same. The purpose of this study was (1) To evaluate the hypothesis that no significant difference exists in the remineralising potential of nano hydroxyapatite (NanoHAP) dentifrice and fluoridated dentifrice after orthodontic debonding, (2) To estimate the enamel topographic parameters following use of nano HAP dentifrice, post orthodontic debonding. METHODS Sixty upper first bi-cuspids (30 subjects) planned for therapeutic extraction for the orthodontic treatment were bonded with a light cured adhesive. Envelope method of randomisation was followed in this prospective in-vivo study. In each subject, one of the first premolar brackets was debonded using a debonding plier and polished following standard protocols. Envelope method of randomisation was used to determine the side of the premolar to be debonded first. Patient was advised to use fluoridated (Group I) dentifrice for the first 15 days, then the first premolar was covered with a heavy-bodied putty cap, extracted and subjected to atomic force microscopy (AFM). Contralateral first premolar was then debonded and polished using similar protocol, and patient was advised to use nano hydroxyapatite dentifrice (Group II) for next 15 days. The premolar was then extracted and analyzed for surface roughness using AFM. The remineralizing potential of dentifrices was assessed by evaluating surface roughness parameters of the two groups and were compared using a two-sample t test. RESULTS A significant difference was found amongst Group I (Fluoridated dentifrice) and Group II (NanoHAP dentifrice) (p > 0.001***) for enamel surface roughness variables which reflect remineralising potential of dentifrices. Group II showed significantly lesser value of surface roughness characteristics. CONCLUSIONS NanoHAP dentifrice was shown, after 15 days, to be superior to fluoridated dentifrice in remineralising enamel post orthodontic debonding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of a tooth whitening agent on surface roughness, surface hardness, and force delivery properties of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) thermoplastic retainer materials of two different thicknesses. METHODS PETG sheets (1 mm and 1.5 mm) were thermoformed over a 30 × 60 × 10 mm3 rectangular stone model. Surface hardness, surface roughness, and results of a three-point bending test were evaluated before and after treatment (5 h daily for 14 days) with a 15% carbamide peroxide home bleaching agent. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t‑test. RESULTS Exposure of PETG specimens to the bleaching agent for 14 days significantly reduced surface hardness and increased surface roughness of samples of both thicknesses. The magnitude of force at different deflection points decreased significantly in the 1.5 mm thickness specimens treated with the bleaching agent, but no significant change was observed in the specimens with 1 mm thickness. CONCLUSION Use of a home bleaching agent could have adverse effects on surface roughness and hardness of PETG materials leading to reduced survival time of thermoplastic orthodontic retainers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE White spot lesion (WSL) is one of the most important complications of fixed orthodontic treatment. Many methods have been studied to prevent this problem. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of high concentration nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) on shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) score in different preparation methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty human premolars, which were extracted for orthodontic reasons were included in this in vitro study. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 each: one control group and three nHAP groups. After applying nHAP for 2 to 3 minutes daily for 10 days, the groups 2 to 4 underwent sandblasting using 50μm aluminium oxide and 30 seconds etching, 60 and 30 seconds etching, respectively, and the brackets were then bonded to the teeth. After debonding, SBS and ARI scores were recorded. Data were analysed using the ANOVA test and posthoc test for pairwise comparisons. RESULTS No significant difference was observed in SBS between the control group and the nHAP groups. The sandblasted teeth showed significantly higher SBS than the 30 seconds etching after nHAP application (P=0.02). The teeth etched for 60 seconds showed a significantly higher ARI score than the 30 seconds etched teeth with (P=0.003) or without (P<0.001) nHAP application. CONCLUSIONS The use of nHAP before bracket bonding can be considered as a caries preventive method since it did not compromise the SBS. Sixty seconds etching is recommended for less likely damage to the enamel after debonding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To provide a narrative review on vital dental whitening chemistry, toxicity and safety, vital dental whitening techniques, whitening systems, potential side effects of whitening and cyclic whitening using products with a range of concentrations and pH values. In addition, new developments and recommendations in the field of vital dental whitening will be presented to help clinicians understand the whitening process, its advantages, limitations, and the impact of whitening concentration and pH on enamel providing guidance in tailoring whitening treatments. DATA Data were gathered using the following keywords: dental whitening, roughness, hardness, sensitivity, hydrogen peroxide, whitening pH, whitening concentration, whitening chemistry, colour, and toxicity. SOURCES An electronic search was performed using PubMed and Scopus databases. Bibliographic material from papers reviewed was then used to find other relevant publications. CONCLUSIONS The effectiveness of vital dental whitening depends on many factors, such as the concentration/pH of the whitening agent, application duration, chemical additives, and re-mineralising agents used. Developing new whitening products and technologies such as nano-additives and alternative carrier systems is showing promising results, and might prove efficient in maximising whitening benefits by accelerating the whitening reaction and/or minimising expected reversible/irreversible enamel structural damage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The primary aim of this randomized in vitro study was to compare the effectiveness of carbide, fibreglass and polymer burs on resinous remnant removal after bracket debonding, by the evaluation of enamel surface roughness and morphology. The secondary objective was to compare the time dispended on the procedures. METHODS The buccal surfaces of 28 bovine incisors were analysed by a profilometer to initial roughness measurement (Ra-T1). Brackets were bonded with a light-cured resin and debonded with a debonding plier. The samples were randomly divided into four groups, according to the bur used (n=7): A-Tungsten carbide; B-Fibreglass; C-Polymer; D-Polymer with 75% ethanol pre-treatment. The second roughness measurements were made after resin removal (Ra-T2). Time for removal procedures was also recorded. The third measurements were made after polishing (Ra-T3). Scanning Electronic Microscopy was performed in two samples of each group: after resin removal and after polishing. Results of roughness and time measurements were statically analysed by analysis of variance with post-hoc Bonferroni. RESULTS After polishing, tungsten carbide (P=0.1555) and fibreglass burs provided final surface roughness statistically similar to the baseline condition (P=1.0000). Yet, polymer burs, associated (P<0.0001) or not to alcohol (P<0.0001), provided surface roughness significantly higher when compared to baseline values. Polymer burs were more time-consuming on resinous remnant removal than tungsten carbide and fibreglass burs (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Polymer burs were less effective and more time-consuming to remove the remaining resin than tungsten carbide and fibreglass burs. The polishing step created smoother surfaces regardless of the burs used for resin removal.

Abstract
Objective: To qualitatively and quantitatively assess the color changes effect and the color stability of the resin infiltrant on white spot lesions (WSLs), in comparison with nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) toothpaste and microabrasion. Methods: WSLs were artificially created on sixty human premolars enamel surfaces and randomly assigned to equal four groups (n = 15 each): nano-HA toothpaste, microabrasion (Opalusture), resin infiltrant (Icon) treatment, or artificial saliva (control group). The color change (ΔE) of each specimen was measured by dental spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade) at different time points: baseline, after WSLs’ creation, after application of treatments, one month, three and six months after treatments application. Results: The ΔE value did not differ significantly for the four groups at baseline measurement before treatment (p> 0.05). Icon resin infiltrant improved the color of WSLs significantly immediately after its application, giving the lowest ΔE value (3.00 ± 0.59), when compared to other treatments (p< 0.001). There were no significant changes in ΔE (p> 0.05) for all groups during the follow up intervals (one month, three and six months after treatments application). Conclusion: Resin infiltrant can improve the color of WSLs and restore the natural appearance of enamel better than nano-HA toothpaste and microabrasion.

Abstract
Reduced friction and wear of materials after the use of the carbon nanomaterials including nanodiamonds (NDs) have been confirmed by several studies in material engineering. Mechanical cleaning of the tooth surface by brush bristles should leave as little tissue roughened as possible. Higher surface roughness increases the tissue's wear and encourages the redeposition of the bacteria and the colouring agents present in the diet. Therefore, we evaluated the tooth tissues' surface's morphological changes after brushing them with the NDs suspension. Ten human teeth were brushed with the NDs aqueous suspension. The surfaces were observed using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). We found that the nature of the tissue surface became milder and smoother. A number of selected profilometric parameters were compared before and after brushing. We observed that brushing with the suspension of NDs resulted in a significant reduction in the enamel and dentine's surface roughness both in the range of the average parameters (Ra; p-0,0019) and in the detailed parameters (Rsk; p-0,048 and Rku; p-0,036). We concluded that the NDs used in the oral hygiene applications have a potentially protective effect on the enamel and the dentine's surfaces.

Abstract
This study evaluated the antierosive effect applying a modified acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel containing nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) on the enamel surface before erosion. After polishing, the exposed flat enamel surfaces (n = 7/group) from bovine incisors were treated with artificial saliva (S - negative control), orange juice (ERO), APF gel (positive control) and APF_nHAp gel. All samples were subjected to six cycles of demineralization (orange juice, pH ~ 3.5, 10 min) followed by remineralization (saliva, 37°C, 1 hr). The enamel surface morphology, topography, and inorganic composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, roughness testing, and micro energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, respectively. The mean (standard deviation) roughness values (Ra, μm) were S, 0.13 (0.05); ERO, 0.25 (0.07); APF, 0.22 (0.08); and APF_nHAp, 0.17 (0.04). Ra values were significantly higher after ERO (p < .01) and APF (p < .05) treatments than after S. The enamel surface morphology was altered by the treatments, except for the S specimens. The mineral content of the enamel showed a clear trend with Ca and P reduction in the order of APF < S < APF_nHAp < ERO and APF < S < ERO < APF_nHAp, respectively. We can conclude that APF gel increased mineral concentration on the enamel. Moreover, the APF_nHAp material modified the composition and morphology of the enamel surface.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combining fractional CO2 LASER and nanohydroxy apatite on surface microhardness and color of enamel with initial defects. Material and Methods Two types of nano hydroxylapatite (nHAP) was prepared; Pure hydroxyapatite (nHA) and Fluoro hydroxyapatite (nFHA), Sixty extracted premolar teeth without visible caries or structural defects on enamel surface were used, immersed in 10 ml of a demineralizing solution for 2 weeks to create artificial white spot lesions, they were randomly allocated into two groups; Group 1: nHA, Group 2: nFHA, each group is then subdivided into 2 subgroups (A and B) where two different in vitroremineralization procedures have been performed, the first procedure utilizes a 10 wt% nHA aqueous slurries only, the second was first exposed to irradiation from a fractional CO2 laser then (nHAP) was applied. Microhardness and color were measured using a micro-Vickers hardness tester and spectrophotometer respectively. Results Laser treated teeth in both groups showed the highest mean hardness and lowest color difference where ΔE was less than 3.3 units, in both tests the pure type of nanohydroxyapatite gave better results than the nanofluroapatite type. Conclusions Nano-hydroxyapatite has remarkable remineralizing effects on initial lesions of enamel, certainly higher when combined with laser application. Abstract
Introduction Dental caries is still prevailing worldwide, although different anti caries products have been introduced. Each remineralizing agent has its own shortcomings. Therefore, looking for new agents to have benefits of previous ones with lesser side effects is worthwhile. Aim To determine the remineralization ability of NaF varnish, nano-Hydroxyapatite Serum (n-HAP) and Nano Silver Fluoride (NSF) on enamel of primary anterior teeth. Materials and Methods Incipient caries were induced in primary sound anterior teeth by storing each specimen in demineralization solution for 72 hours. Then they were randomly divided into four groups of 15 samples each: (1) NaF varnish; (2) n-HAP repairing serum; (3) NSF and (4) no treatment (control). Surface Microhardness (SMH) was assessed with Vickers micro hardness tester before and after demineralization and after 10 days of pH-cycling. A total of 12 random specimens from groups 1 to 4 (3 random samples of each group) were examined by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The SMH values were analysed with one-way and repeated measures ANOVA. Level of significance was set at p=0.05. Results Post lesion SMH values significantly decreased in all groups (p<0.001). Post treatment SMH values significantly increased in comparison to post lesion ones (p<0.001) except for control group which was not different statistically (p=0.86). The highest SMH values were observed in NSF group (mean 222.90 ± 28.79). Statistically significant differences were shown between all groups (p<0.05). However, NaF varnish and n-HAP groups were not statistically different (p=0.165). AFM images demonstrated protective layers in all treated groups. Conclusion The results of this in vitro study suggest that NSF could have the greatest remineralization efficacy. NaF varnish and n-HAP serum were similar in remineralizing initial caries. Future clinical studies are recommended for selection of the most appropriate remineralizing agent in primary teeth.
