Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the knowledge of monkeypox infection among dental hygiene professionals and students in Saudi Arabia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of dental hygiene professionals (n = 259). The questionnaire was developed based on previous literature, and descriptive analysis and a Chi-square test were performed. RESULTS A total of 159 dental hygienists responded to the questionnaire. Results indicated that only 1.7% had good knowledge, 7.7% had moderate knowledge and 90.6% had low knowledge of the monkeypox outbreak. The mean knowledge scores varied among dental hygiene students, practitioners and faculty members. Significant group differences were observed for some questions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study concludes that dental hygienists had moderate to low level of knowledge of the monkeypox infection and its implications for oral health and patient care, indicating a need for more education on the subject.

Abstract
Due to the limitations of the current treatment approaches of allograft and autograft techniques, treating bone disorders is a significant challenge. To address these shortcomings, a novel biomaterial composite is required. This study presents the preparation and fabrication of a novel biomaterial composite scaffold that combines poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and simvastatin (Sim) to address the limitations of current bone grafting techniques of autograft and allograft. The fabricated scaffold of PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim composites was developed using a low-cost hydraulic press and salt leaching method, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed the scaffolds have a pore size between 143 and 240 μm. The protein adsorption for fabricated scaffolds was increased at 24 h. The water adsorption and retention studies showed significant results on the PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim composite scaffold. The biodegradation studies of the PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim composite scaffold have shown 54% after 28 days. In vitro, bioactivity evaluation utilizing simulated body fluid studies confirmed the development of bone mineral hydroxyapatite on the scaffolds, which was characterized using x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and SEM analysis. Furthermore, the PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim composite scaffold is biocompatible with C3H10T1/2 cells and expresses more alkaline phosphatase and mineralization activity. Additionally, in vivo research showed that PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim stimulates a higher rate of bone regeneration. These findings highlight the fabricated PLGA-MBG-MoS2-Sim composite scaffold presents a promising solution for the limitations of current bone grafting techniques.

Abstract
AIM The systematic review aimed to compare the levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and RAGE (AGE receptors) expression in diabetic periodontitis patients with non-diabetic periodontitis patients and to identify the relationship of AGE and RAGE levels with periodontal disease severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS The literature search was carried out according to PRISMA guidelines by two independent researchers using four online databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Pro-Quest. Relevant studies published between 2000 and March 2023 were included in this review. The association of diabetes and AGE/RAGE levels on periodontal health, periodontal pocket depth (PPD), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) was studied. RESULTS Sixteen cross-sectional studies, including 2794 patients (age range 15-75 years), were identified in the final stage. An elevated AGE level was observed among patients with diabetes and chronic periodontal disease compared to the non-diabetic group. Furthermore, the levels of AGE and RAGE are associated with CAL and PPD. Potential confounding factors like genetic and methodological differences were also responsible for AGE and RAGE variation. CONCLUSION Levels of AGEs and RAGE expressions in diabetic periodontitis patients differ from non-diabetic periodontitis patients. The differences may impact the course and severity of periodontal disease.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the impact of the Tantalum Trabecular Metal dental implant design on implant stability and the process of osseointegration following its placement in the rabbit femoral condyle. The subjects for the experiment consisted of 10 New Zealand white rabbits. Twenty implants, comprising 10 Trabecular Metal (TM) and 10 Traditional Screw Vent (TSV) implants, were placed into the femoral condyles of these rabbits. The implant type was alternated based on a random sequence. Following a healing period of 8 weeks, the implants were retrieved for further analysis using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), histological studies, and histomorphometry evaluations. The Bone-to-Implant Contact (BIC) ratio and the Bone Volume (BV) percentage in the region of interest were subsequently assessed. The BIC and BV values between TM and TSV implants were compared using the Student t-test. The TM implants exhibited significantly greater BIC and BV scores. In particular, the BIC percentage was recorded as 57.9 ± 6.5 for the TM implants, as opposed to 47.6 ± 8 for the TSV implants. Correspondingly, the BV percentage was 57 ± 7.3 for the TM implants and 46.4 ± 7.4 for the TSV implants. The bone volume percentage measured using micro-CT evaluation was 89.1 ± 8.7 for the TM implants and 79.1 ± 8.6 for the TSV implants. Given the observed results, it is plausible to suggest that the bone growth surrounding the tantalum mesh could have improved the integration of the bone and facilitated its ingrowth into the TM implant.

Abstract
Diagnosing dental caries plays a pivotal role in preventing and treating tooth decay. However, traditional methods of diagnosing caries often fall short in accuracy and efficiency. Despite the endorsement of radiography as a diagnostic tool, the identification of dental caries through radiographic images can be influenced by individual interpretation. Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into diagnosing dental caries holds significant promise, potentially enhancing the precision and efficiency of diagnoses. This review introduces the fundamental concepts of AI, including machine learning and deep learning algorithms, and emphasizes their relevance and potential contributions to the diagnosis of dental caries. It further explains the process of gathering and pre-processing radiography data for AI examination. Additionally, AI techniques for dental caries diagnosis are explored, focusing on image processing, analysis, and classification models for predicting caries risk and severity. Deep learning applications in dental caries diagnosis using convolutional neural networks are presented. Furthermore, the integration of AI systems into dental practice is discussed, including the challenges and considerations for implementation as well as ethical and legal aspects. The breadth of AI technologies and their prospective utility in clinical scenarios for diagnosing dental caries from dental radiographs is presented. This review outlines the advancements of AI and its potential in revolutionizing dental caries diagnosis, encouraging further research and development in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's quality of life, academic performance, and future achievement can all be negatively affected by poor dental health. The present study aimed to assess the need for dental health services and the factors influencing their utilization using the Andersen health care utilization model among school children. METHODS The current cross-sectional study was conducted among schoolchildren aged 13 to 15 in Bangalore, India (n = 1100). A questionnaire was developed using the concepts of the Andersen healthcare usage model. The parents of the children filled out the questionnaire. The factors were investigated using bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS About 78.1% of the children did not utilize dental health services. Regarding the reasons for not visiting a dentist, 65.8% said they did not have a dental problem, and 22.2% said they could not afford it. Bivariate analysis showed that age, gender, education level, occupation of the family's head of household, monthly family income, socioeconomic status, perceived oral health problems, accessibility of dental health facilities, and parental attitudes toward their children's oral health were significantly associated with using dental health services (p<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed dental health service utilization was directly related to age (OR = 2.206), education, family size (OR = 1.33), and brushing frequency twice a day (OR = 1.575) with no significant relationship between distance to reach the dental facility, the number of dental visits, and socioeconomic status. CONCLUSION Dental health service utilization was low in the past year. The age, number of family members, parent's education level, travel time to the dental facility, the child's oral health behaviors, and positive parental attitude all play a role in a children's utilization of dental health service.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current outbreak of human monekypox (MPX) in several endemic and non-endemic regions in 2022 has generated significant international attention. Despite the early classification as zoonotic, MPXV has demonstrated the potential for human-to-human transmission through close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. Therefore, our objective was to elaborate on the oral lesions in human MPX and their management. MATERIALS AND METHOD Articles published up to August, 2022, were screened to identify relevant studies in humans that reported oral lesions in MPX. RESULTS Oral lesions have been found to manifest differently and transform from vesicles to pustules, accompanied by umbilication and crusting within four weeks. Along with fever and lymphadenopathy, these lesions may develop in the oral cavity and then spread to the skin surrounding the extremities in a centrifugal pattern. In some patients, the oropharyngeal and perioral lesions were the initial presentations. CONCLUSIONS The oral lesions of MPX infection and its management strategies are relevant for dentists. Dental practitioners may be the first to detect the initial lesions of MPX. Therefore, high alertness should be there, especially while examining patients with fever and lymphadenopathy. It is also essential to thoroughly examine the oral cavity for macular and papular lesions in oral mucosa, tongue, gingiva, and epiglottis. Symptomatic and supportive care of oral lesions is recommended.

Abstract
Dental caries is a common problem in adolescents, leading to permanent loss of teeth or cavitation. Caries is a continuous process wherein demineralization and remineralization occur regularly. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is one of the most biocompatible and bioactive materials, as it closely resembles the mineral composition of teeth. The present study deals with isolating hydroxyapatite from fish bone (Epinephelus chlorostigma) by alkaline hydrolysis and thermal calcination. The isolated nano HA was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM-EDX, and HR-TEM analysis. The nano HA isolated by alkaline hydrolysis is nontoxic, and the cells are viable. The isolated HA enhances the proliferation of L929 cells. The remineralization potential of the extracted nano HA was evaluated in healthy premolars by DIAGNOdent/laser fluorescence quantification, surface microhardness test, and SEM-EDX analysis. Surface morphological observations in SEM and EDX analyses show that thermally calcined HA and alkali-treated HA can induce mineralization and deposit minerals. Therefore, HA obtained from Epinephelus chlorostigma could be a potential biomaterial for treating early caries.

Abstract
There is inconclusive evidence about the link between the severity and prevalence of periodontitis in obese adults. Therefore, this systematic review aims to explore the possibility of significant evidence on the association between obesity and periodontitis and to determine the necessity to consider obesity as a risk factor for periodontitis. We followed the PRISMA protocol, and studies that met the eligibility criteria were included in this review. The risk of bias in individual studies was also evaluated. This review included 15 observational studies (9 cross-sectional studies, 2 case-control, and 4 cohort studies). The total study subjects from these studies were 6603 (males = 3432; females = 3171). Most studies showed a significant association between obesity and periodontitis. Among these studies, a few showed obese females to be at a higher risk, and one study found no association between obesity and periodontal disease at all. Based on the evidence obtained from this review, the body mass index (BMI) should be routinely assessed in patients to assess the risk for periodontal disease and to offer personalized management of periodontitis. Based on the findings of this review, we recommend the need to initiate awareness among clinicians and implement dental hygiene care prevention measures for obese patients.

Abstract
Biomimetic materials for better bone graft substitutes are a thrust area of research among researchers and clinicians. Autografts, allografts, and synthetic grafts are often utilized to repair and regenerate bone defects. Autografts are still considered the gold-standard method/material to treat bone-related issues with satisfactory outcomes. It is important that the material used for bone tissue repair is simultaneously osteoconductive, osteoinductive, and osteogenic. To overcome this problem, researchers have tried several ways to develop different materials using chitosan-based nanocomposites of silver, copper, gold, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and biosilica. The combination of materials helps in the expression of ideal bone formation genes of alkaline phosphatase, bone morphogenic protein, runt-related transcription factor-2, bone sialoprotein, and osteocalcin. In vitro and in vivo studies highlight the scientific findings of antibacterial activity, tissue integration, stiffness, mechanical strength, and degradation behaviour of composite materials for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Monkeypox (MPX) caused by the MPX virus, is a contagious disease confined mainly to African regions, and is currently making multiple appearances outside of disease-endemic countries. World Health Organization (WHO) very recently declared the current monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. We review here the salient features of MPX and its possible impact on dentistry. METHODS The data on the aetiology, transmission modes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and management, including the risk of its occupational transmission in dental settings, were garnered from the current literature, mainly from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention databases. RESULTS Over recent months, MPX has reemerged in more than 88 countries in Europe, North America, and Australia, with some 22000 case reports to date (as of July 2022). The initial signs of MPX appear during the prodromal period, in the oral cavity as single or multiple macular lesions on the oral mucosa, accompanied by generalised lymphadenopathy. Subsequently, the characteristic rash appears on the skin and spreads centripetally from the trunk towards the palms and soles. MPX is a self-limiting disease with very low mortality and may last from 2 to 4 weeks. Although MPX is similar to chickenpox, there are a number of differentiating signs, the main element being lymphadenopathy. Strict adherence to standard, contact, and droplet infection control precautions, including wearing N95 masks, FFP3 respirators, fluid-resistant attire, and eye protection, is necessary to prevent its spread. CONCLUSIONS MPX appears to be a significant travel-related disease. Dental care workers should note that premonitory signs of the disease usually appear on the oral mucosa as macules and ulcers prior to the characteristic skin lesions. Implementing standard, contact, and droplet infection control measures, patient isolation, and referral are important, particularly during a local outbreak. A vaccine specific for MPX is under development, although the smallpox vaccine appears to be effective.

Abstract
Background: A relationship between periodontitis and COVID-19 may exist, as highlighted by several hypothetical models. However, the evidence is limited. Hence, the present study was conducted to determine whether an association exists between periodontitis and COVID-19. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who were divided into three groups—mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19—based on the COVID-19 severity score of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) chest scans. Periodontal parameters—including the plaque index (PI), ratio of sites with gingival bleeding (BOP), pocket depth (PD), gingival recession (REC), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and mean numbers of mobile and missing teeth due to periodontitis—were recorded for all three groups. Statistical analyses were applied to the data. Results: Of 294 patients with COVID-19, approximately 50.68% (n = 149) had periodontitis, and the highest percentage (87.5%) was reported in the severe COVID-19 group. Additionally, severe and advanced stages of periodontitis (stage III–IV) were found to be significantly more frequent in subjects with severe COVID-19 than in the other two groups. The HRCT severity score (CT-SS) was moderately correlated with increased levels of periodontal parameters. Conclusions: Results of logistic regression analyses showed that the probability of developing severe COVID-19 was 2.81 times higher in patients with periodontitis. An association exists between periodontitis and severe COVID-19.

Abstract
Background: The leaves of Simarouba glauca (S. glauca) have been used as a potential source of anticancer agents in traditional medicine. Attempts have been made to isolate anticancer agents from the leaves of S. glauca. The objective of the present study was to demonstrate the anticancer and apoptotic effect of the leaf extract of petroleum ether (LPE) on human non-small-cell lung cancer A549 cells. Methods: MTT assay was used to investigate the effect of LPE on the viability of A-549 cells. The apoptotic effect of human lung cancer cells was evaluated using fluorescence staining, acridine orange/ ethidium bromide staining, Hoechst staining, flow cytometry analysis, annexin V staining, and caspase assay. Results: The results showed a direct correlation between the dose and the rate of cytotoxicity. Fluorescence staining revealed apoptotic features, such as blebbing and chromatin condensation. Flow cytometry analysis and annexin V staining revealed phosphatidyl serine externalization. Caspase assay confirmed that the extract inhibited cell death. Caspase 3 expressions indicated that the cell death occurred either through the mitochondrial pathway or the death receptor. Conclusions: The study revealed that the LPE induced the apoptosis of human non-small-cell lung cancer, A549 cells, either through mitochondrial or death receptor pathway.

Abstract
Objective Research has shown that the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) significantly influences the oral microbiome to expedite systemic diseases by invading harmful oral pathogens near and distant organs. To identify, explore, and map the possible mechanisms underlying periodontitis in severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) cases. Material and Methods Relevant articles published from December 2019 to February 2022 were identified and screened using keywords and inclusion criteria from various databases. Results This review sheds light on multiple pathways of periodontitis, the spread of periodontal infection and microbial metabolites to the lungs, and the dysregulated immune system with elevated cytokines, reactive oxygen species generation, nuclear DNA damage, and senescence, which have the potential to promote stronger viral attachment to host cells and the onset of COVID‐19 manifestation with increased severity and risk of mortality. In addition, the cytokine connection to SARS‐CoV‐2, T‐cell responses against periodontitis, its connection with COVID‐19, the role of host factors, and periodontal therapy have been discussed. Conclusions The relationship between COVID‐19 and periodontitis needs further investigation along with the development of alternative therapies to prevent periodontitis for better management and control of COVID‐19.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) has been reported to have a remineralizing effect on early carious lesions. The objective of this scoping review was to analyze the remineralization potential of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)-containing dentifrices, by mapping the existing literature. (2) Methods: This review was performed using the PRISMA-ScR Checklist, which is an extension of the PRISMA Checklist for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. In this study, the population, concept, and context (PCC) framework was used to find relevant papers published between 2010 and 2021. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) and dentifrices containing nHAp as one of the ingredients were the two main concepts of the research question. MeSH phrases, keywords, and other free terms relevant to nano-hydroxyapatite and dentifrices were used to search the literature databases. (3) Results: Preliminary searches yielded 59 studies; the title and abstract screening results excluded 11 studies. The remaining studies were thoroughly reviewed by two reviewers on the basis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, 28 studies were included, and 20 studies were excluded. Most of the studies that were included reported that when nHAp was used alone, it had many different effects, such as remineralization, caries prevention, less demineralization, brighter teeth, less pain, and remineralization of enamel after orthodontic debonding. (4) Conclusions: Dentifrices that contain nHAp offer a variety of therapeutic and preventative effects. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of nHAp dentifrices in primary teeth. Additional long-term investigations using standardized protocols are required to reach decisive conclusions about the effects of nHAp dentifrices on primary and permanent dentitions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A lot of research has been done on various disinfection modalities used to achieve an aseptic implant surface. However, the bacterial efficacy and the topographical alterations resulting from the use of these techniques have never been compared. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate and compare the disinfection efficacy and surface changes on a bacteria contaminated titanium block following application of various disinfectants. METHOD Ultrasonically cleaned titanium blocks were contaminated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia. The infected titanium implants were randomly divided into four experimental groups and decontaminated using antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), laser therapy, chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide. Bacterial viability and surface changes following decontamination were analyzed. RESULT Bacterial viability decreased in all the groups with aPDT having the highest reduction. Surface roughness remained unchanged whereas the contact angle lessened in the aPDT group. CONCLUSION aPDT could possibly be a suitable alternative to other disinfection regimen to treat periimplantitis.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus causing COVID-19 significantly affects the respiratory functions of infected individuals by massively disrupting the pulmonary oxygenation and activating the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines, inducing severe oxidative stress, enhanced vascular permeability, and endothelial dysfunction which have rendered researchers and clinicians to depend on prophylactic treatment due to the unavailability of proper disease management approaches. Previous studies have indicated that nitric oxide (NO) application appears to be significant concerning the antiviral activities, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties in relieving disease-related symptoms. To identify, explore, and map the literature on the role of nitric oxide in the management of respiratory consequences in COVID-19 through this scoping review, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed during the search to answer the focal question: "What are the potential uses of nitric oxide in the management of respiratory failure in COVID-19?" Administering exogenous NO in the form of inhaled gas or stimulating the system to produce NO appears to be a suitable option to manage COVID-19-induced pneumonia and respiratory illness. This treatment modality seems to attenuate respiratory distress among patients suffering from severe infections or patients with comorbidities. Exogenous NO at different doses effectively reduces systemic hyperinflammation and oxidative stress, improves arterial oxygenation, and restores pulmonary alveolar cellular integrity to prevent the lungs and other organs from further damage. This therapy could pave the way for better management of COVID-19 before the onset of disease-related complications.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance is a grave public health concern, and it is important to optimize the use of antimicrobials in dental surgeries. Antimicrobial prescriptions in dental implant placements are often empiric and not guided by consensus or specific guidelines. The aim of this study was to elucidate antibiotic prescribing patterns among oral implantologists. The objectives were to identify the frequency of antimicrobial usage and preferences regarding the perioperative timing of prescriptions, type of antibiotic, dosage, and duration in different implant placement scenarios. Subjects and Methods: An anonymized web-based survey was carried out. Participants were drawn from the lists of oral implantologists from all local branches of the Indian Dental Association in the state of Kerala, India, until the required sample size was met. Responses were recorded using an Internet-based validated questionnaire sent via e-mail to the participants. The questionnaire contained five sections with both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Results: Among the 93 participants, 59% of the dental implantologists preferred 0.2% povidone-iodine as a preprocedural mouth rinse in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, and 68% prescribed 0.12%–0.2% chlorhexidine as the postoperative mouth rinse. The majority of the participants (73%) routinely prescribed systemic antibiotics perioperatively during implant placement surgery. Interestingly, while none of the participants preferred a solely preoperative regimen, 92.4% of the dentists in our survey prescribed both pre- and postoperative antibiotics. Antibiotics of choice as the preoperative agents were amoxicillin and amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid. The most preferred postoperative agent was amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid. The popularly reported rationale behind a preoperative antibiotic was to decrease or eliminate local or systemic infections (79%), and the majority of the participants (60%) prescribed postoperative antibiotics to prevent postoperative infection. Conclusions: Systemic antibiotic prescriptions in implant placement surgery are not based on currently available evidence. Most oral implantologists who participated in the survey prescribed systemic antibiotics to prevent perioperative infection, even in simple and straightforward implant placements. Specific guidelines need to be generated in complex implant placement situations and implant placement in medically compromised patients to prevent excessive prescriptions.

Abstract
Oral cancer (OC), a potentially fatal disease, is a major health concern across the world. It is reported to be the sixth most common cancer in the world with a disappointingly low 5-year survival rate, despite major advances in onco-medicine in the past three decades. The low 5-year-survival rate is associated with late diagnosis of the disease, while OC diagnosed at early stages enjoy a much higher 5-year-survival rate, comparatively. Although the oral cavity is one of the most easily accessible parts of the body for cancer screening, OC is typically diagnosed at later stages. The delay in diagnosis is one of the factors for the poor 5-year survival rate and high mortality and morbidity among patients. Therefore, an early diagnosis is of utmost importance. Visual and tactile examination and scalpel biopsy are still considered the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) and OC. Nevertheless, adjunctive techniques could be employed to increase the ability to distinguish benign abnormalities from dysplastic/malignant changes. These would also aid in identifying areas of dysplasia/early OC that are not visible to the naked eye and tackle the delay in diagnosing OPMD/OC. These adjunctive tools are not a replacement for visual and tactile examination but are supplementary aids. They could be used to screen healthy patients for the presence of any occult cancerous change and evaluate the biological potential of clinically abnormal mucosal lesions, thus enabling early recognition and diagnosis which might increase survival rate and reduce mortality and treatment-associated morbidity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study was performed to determine the gingival dimensions (width and thickness) among young individuals in a central Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS Periodontal probing depth, width of the keratinized and attached gingiva, and gingival thickness were recorded on maxillary and mandibular teeth from central incisor to first molar unilaterally in 75 systemically healthy individuals (32 males and 43 females; 19-30 years of age). Comparisons were made gender-wise, arch-wise, tooth-wise, and site-wise using either the Student's t test or the ANOVA. RESULTS Keratinized and attached gingiva were wider in the maxilla than in the mandible both at proximal and at mid-buccal aspects (p < 0.001). At the tooth level also, gingiva was wider at the maxillary teeth than the corresponding mandibular teeth and at proximal aspects than at the mid-buccal aspect (p < 0.001). Regarding the thickness, gingiva was thicker among males, in the mandible, and at inter-proximal sites (p < 0.001). In either arch, maximum thickness was observed at the incisor region and least at the canine region. CONCLUSIONS Dimensions of the gingival tissues vary between different populations and between different areas of the dentition within the same subject. These variations need to be better understood because these aspects may have an important bearing on periodontal treatment planning as width and thickness of gingiva are important in terms of maintenance of periodontal health. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The dimensions of the clinically healthy gingiva are important in clinical practice as they can influence the progression of periodontal disease as well as impact the outcome of periodontal and restorative and orthodontic therapy.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this prospective observational case–control study is to evaluate the prevalence of Fusobacterium nucleatum in the tissues of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Reconnoitering the CCL20-related mechanism of carcinogenesis in Fusobacterium nucleatum-positive OSCC is another objective. Methodology: Tissues from 50 OSCC patients and 30 healthy oral tissues were collected. The prevalence of Fusobacterium nucleatum was evaluated in both tumour and healthy tissue by polymerase chain reaction. The immunohistochemistry of OSCC tissues was conducted to evaluate the difference in the expression of CCL20 between Fusobacterium nucleatum-positive and -negative OSCC tissues. Results: Fusobacterium nucleatum was significantly (p < 0.001) prevalent in OSCC tissues (74%), compared to healthy tissues (26%). No association of Fusobacterium nucleatum or CCL20 immuno-expression with any clinical or histopathological features of OSCC was observed. While the intensity of CCL20 immuno-expression did not differ (p = 0.053), the CCL20-positive cell population was significantly different (p = 0.034) between Fusobacterium nucleatum-positive and -negative OSCC. Conclusion: Fusobacterium nucleatum is possibly prevalent in oral cancer tissues in the Indian population. By using immunohistochemistry, this is the first study to propose that the carcinogenesis in Fusobacterium nucleatum-positive OSCC may be CCL20-related. The findings enrich the knowledge of mechanisms involved in Fusobacterium nucleatum-mediated oral carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Context: The potential impact of severe periodontitis on glycemia in systemically healthy individuals is not clearly established. It was hypothesized that among individuals who were previously undiagnosed for diabetes mellitus, patients with severe periodontitis have impaired glycemia and insulin resistance. Aims: The aim of our study was to assess and compare glycemia in severe periodontitis patients and in individuals with clinically healthy periodontium. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional analytical design was employed. From among individuals who were undiagnosed for diabetes mellitus, 37 patients with severe periodontitis and 37 individuals with healthy periodontium in the age group of 25–55 years were recruited for the study. The fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and insulin resistance by the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) were assessed and compared between the two groups. Results: The mean FBS, HOMA-IR, and HbA1c were significantly higher for patients with severe periodontitis than those individuals with healthy periodontium. After adjustments for age, gender, and body mass index, patients with severe periodontitis had a statistically significant association with impaired glucose metabolism (HbA1c ≥5.7) (adjusted odds ratio [OR] of 9.56; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.819–46.08; P < 0.01). Furthermore, patients with severe periodontitis had significantly greater odds to develop impaired fasting glucose (adjusted OR of 7.489, 95% CI: 1.408–39.839; P < 0.01). Conclusions: The mean FBS, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR were significantly higher in severe periodontitis patients than in the control group. A higher proportion of patients presented with prediabetes, incident diabetes, and insulin resistance in the severe periodontitis group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and periodontitis share common characteristics, such as an exaggerated inflammatory response. As periodontal diseases were shown to be associated with respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia, it is quite possible that a relationship may exist between periodontitis and COVID-19. Hence, the aim of the present study was to determine whether periodontitis and poor oral hygiene are associated with COVID-19. METHODS A case-control study was conducted. Patients who had positive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction results for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection were included in the case group (n = 79), and patients with negative results were included in the control group (n = 71). The periodontal examination involved recording the plaque scores, calculus scores, tooth mobility, gingival bleeding, probing depth, recession, and clinical attachment level (CAL). RESULTS Logistic regression analysis showed significant associations of mean plaque scores ≥ 1 (odds ratio (OR), 7.01; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.83 to 26.94), gingivitis (OR, 17.65; 95% CI, 5.95 to 52.37), mean CAL ≥ 2 mm (OR, 8.46; 95% CI, 3.47 to 20.63), and severe periodontitis (OR, 11.75; 95% CI, 3.89 to 35.49) with COVID-19; these findings were more prevalent in the case group. CONCLUSION Based on the above mentioned observations, it can be concluded that there is an association between periodontitis severity and COVID-19. Gingival bleeding and dental plaque accumulation are also more frequent among COVID-19 patients. Hence, it is essential to maintain periodontal health and good oral hygiene as an important measure for COVID-19 prevention and management.

Abstract
Background and objective: Simarouba glauca is a plant belonging to the family of Simaroubaceae. It is a potent source of secondary metabolites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the apoptotic properties of leaf extracts of Simarouba glauca against human leukemic cancer cells. Materials and Methods: Cytotoxicity of Simarouba glauca was assessed in the leaf extract of petroleum ether against leukemic cells by MTT assay. To detect the apoptotic features, fluorescence microscopy analysis was done with dual acridine orange/ethidium bromide fluorescent staining and Hoechst staining. To determine the externalization of phosphatidylserine, annexin v staining was done. Mitochondrial or death receptor activation was confirmed by caspase 3 analysis by flow cytometry. Results: This study revealed that Simarouba glauca was able to treat leukemia. Among the four extracts, petroleum ether extract showed a higher order of in vitro anticancer activity. The petroleum ether extract strongly inhibited the proliferation of K562 cell lines with IC50 values of 186 µg/ml. Dual acridine orange/ethidium bromide fluorescent staining and Hoechst staining revealed the characteristic features of apoptosis. Annexin V confirmed early and late stage apoptosis. Caspase-3 analysis revealed that cell death was due to mitochondrial or death receptor activation in mitochondrial pathway. Conclusion: These findings suggested that Simarouba glauca leaf extracts inhibited leukemic cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner either through mitochondrial or death receptor activation. The leaf extracts of Simarouba glauca was found to be nontoxic to lymphocytes. It can be concluded that Simarouba glauca is an important source of phytochemicals posing efficacy against leukemic cancer cells.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia ensuing from deficiencies in insulin action, secretion, or both. Hyperglycemia has wide-ranging molecular and cellular effects, leading to oxidative stress, up-regulation of pro-inflammatory responses, and vascular changes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expressions of inflammatory markers involved in periodontal destructive process occurring in diabetes, periodontitis (PD), and both coexisting conditions. Methods: A rat model was carried out using streptozotocin (STZ) to induce diabetes and Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) with teeth ligature to mimic periodontitis. The animals were distributed randomly into seven groups (n=12) and treated for 10 weeks with alternation between diabetes and PD. The relative quantification analysis of inflammatory markers expression: CRP, MMP-2-14, TIMP-2, IL-4, IFN-γ, was performed at the end of the experiments using western blot after protein isolation from periodontal tissue surrounding the ligation. Results: The data showed that CRP, MMP-2, MMP-14, TIMP-2, and IFN-γ are involved in the process of periodontal inflammation associated with diabetes. A significant increase (p<0.05) in the expression of inflammatory markers was detected when PD is associated with preexisting diabetes in comparison with diabetes superimposed on preexisting PD. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that already established diabetes worsens periodontitis more than diabetes upcoming on existing periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enhancement of the bone regenerative capacity of the bone substitutes could be achieved by incorporating bioactive agents such as proteins, and different drugs. Simvastatin, an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis, stimulates bone formation by enhancing the expression of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (BMP-2) in osteoblasts. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study is to evaluate bone regeneration following simvastatin loaded nano-hydroxyapatite scaffold in the bone defect created on the femoral condyle of rabbits. METHODS Twelve adult, New Zealand white rabbits were used in the study. Twenty-four defects of size 5x8 mm were created on the lateral aspect of the femoral condyle. The defects were filled with either Nano-Hydroxyapatite (nHA) particles alone or nHA with Simvastatin (SIM). The condyles were retrieved after 8 weeks and analyzed using micro CT and histology. RESULTS The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) was significantly higher for the defects filled with SIM loaded nHA compared to the nHA site. Micro CT showed a significantly higher bone volume in the defects filled with Simvastatin loaded site compared to the control site. Quantitative analysis of the histologic sections also showed significantly higher bone volume in the defects filled with SIM loaded nHA (57.2±4.8) compared to nHA alone (50.1±5.5). CONCLUSION Based on the results, it can be concluded that local delivery of simvastatin enhanced the bone regeneration in rabbit femoral condyle. Simvastatin could be used as an activator to enhance bone regeneration in bone defects along with hydroxyapatite ceramics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Utilization of macroalgae has gained much attention in the field of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food and bioenergy. Macroalgae has been widely consumed in Asian countries as food from ancient days and proved that it has potential bioactive compounds which are responsible for its nutritional properties. Macroalgae consists of a diverse range of bioactive compounds including proteins, lipids, pigments, polysaccharides, etc. Polysaccharides from macroalgae have been utilized in food industries as gelling agents and drug excipients in the pharmaceutical industries owing to their biocompatibility and gel forming properties. Exploration of macroalgae derived sulfated polysaccharides in biomedical applications is increasing recently. METHODS In the current review, we have provided information of three different sulfated polysaccharides such as carrageenan, fucoidan and ulvan and their isolation procedure (enzymatic precipitation, microwave assisted method, and enzymatic hydrolysis method), structural details, and their biomedical applications exclusively for bone tissue repair and regeneration. RESULTS From the scientific results on sulfated polysaccharides from macroalgae, we conclude that sulfated polysaccharides have exceptional properties in terms of hydrogel-forming ability, scaffold formation, and mimicking the extracellular matrix, increasing alkaline phosphatase activity, enhancement of biomineralization ability and stem cell differentiation for bone tissue regeneration. CONCLUSION Overall, sulfated polysaccharides from macroalgae may be promising biomaterials in bone tissue repair and regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the impact of publicly reporting a statewide fetal growth restriction (FGR) performance indicator. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study from 2000 to 2017. SETTING All maternity services in Victoria, Australia. POPULATION A total of 1 231 415 singleton births at ≥32 weeks of gestation. METHODS We performed an interrupted time-series analysis to assess the impact of publicly reporting an FGR performance indicator on the rate of detection for severe cases of small for gestational age (SGA). Rates of perinatal mortality and morbidity and obstetric intervention were assessed for severe SGA pregnancies and pregnancies delivered for suspected SGA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Gestation at delivery, obstetric management and perinatal outcome. RESULTS The public reporting of a statewide FGR performance indicator was associated with a steeper reduction per quarter in the percentage of severe SGA undelivered by 40 weeks of gestation, from 0.13 to 0.51% (P = 0.001), and a decrease in the stillbirth rate by 3.3 per 1000 births among those babies (P = 0.01). Of babies delivered for suspected SGA, the percentage with birthweights ≥ 10th centile increased from 41.4% (n = 307) in 2000 to 53.3% (n = 1597) in 2017 (P < 0.001). Admissions to a neonatal intensive care unit for babies delivered for suspected SGA but with a birthweight ≥ 10th centile increased from 0.8 to 2.0% (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The public reporting of an FGR performance indicator has been associated with the improved detection of severe SGA and a decrease in the rate of stillbirth among those babies, but with an increase in the rate of iatrogenic birth for babies with normal growth. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT The public reporting of hospital performance is associated with a reduction in stillbirth, but also with unintended interventions.

Abstract
Objective: In the study our aim was to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of different solvent extracts of Annona squamosa seeds. Methods and materials: The four extracts used were petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol were tested using cytotoxicity assays. Results: Among the four extracts tested petroleum ether showed maximum cytotoxicity against a panel of cancer cell lines such as nasopharyngeal cancer (KB) cells, lung cancer (A-549) cells, breast cancer (MCF- 7) cells, leukemic (K-562) cells and inhibited the growth of murine cancer cells such as Dalton’s lymphoma ascites (DLA) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC). Conclusion: Petroleum ether extract of Annona squamosa seeds showed cytotoxicity towards a panel of cancer cells meanwhile non-significant cytotoxicity towards normal cells.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are gaining a great deal of attention in biomedical applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this study, green synthesis of AgNPs was developed using seaweed polysaccharide fucoidan. The AgNPs were further coated with chitosan to form an electrolyte complex on the surface. The developed chitosan⁻fucoidan complex-coated AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). FT-IR results suggested strong polyelectrolyte complexation between fucoidan and chitosan. The developed chitosan⁻fucoidan complex-coated AgNPs significantly inhibited microbial growth. Moreover, the AgNPs showed efficient anticancer activity in human cervical cancer cells (HeLa). This study demonstrated that chitosan⁻fucoidan complex-coated AgNPs hold high potential for food and cosmeceutical applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are only limited studies that have determined the antibacterial effects of various remineralizing agents that can be beneficial to children. AIM The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of tricalcium phosphate (TCP), calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSP), and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) enhanced with fluoride in reducing the Streptococcus mutans (SM) levels in saliva of children. MATERIALS AND METHODS Out of 245 children, 120 of them with SM colony forming units (CFU)/ml in the range of 104-106/ml of saliva were assigned to four groups: (I) TCP; (II) CSP; (III) CPP-ACP enhanced with fluoride; and (IV) control. Salivary samples were collected at intervals of 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks and the number of CFU/ml of SM in saliva were counted post 48 hour incubation. RESULTS After 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks, there was a significant reduction in the mean score of SM (P < 0.05). The maximum reduction in the CFU/ml in the saliva was seen in the 1st week after the commencement of the brushing in all the three test groups. Group III children demonstrated the maximum reduction of 15 × 105 CFU/ml, followed by Group II children with 10 × 105 CFU/ml. CONCLUSIONS Twice daily use of CPP-ACP with fluoride, CSP, and TCP caused a significant reduction in the levels of SM in saliva.

Abstract
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the awareness level of the individuals with hearing and speech impairments (deaf and dumb individuals), in relation to their oral health and dental treatment needs. Materials and Methods: The approach of stratified randomization method of sampling was used for the selection of participants. About 240 people with hearing and speech impairments (deaf and dumb) were selected from four cities of Saudi Arabia, which includes AlKharj, Riyadh, Dammam and Abha. A questionnaire of two sections was distributed among the participants for collecting data. A simple descriptive analysis was done, and the data were expressed in terms of frequencies and percentages. Microsoft Excel has been used for compilation of data and execution of graphs. Moreover, the questionnaire data were subject to SPSS data analysis (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0, Armonk, IBM Corp. NY). Results: Most of the participants were not aware of the importance of oral health. Majority of the participants described that they did not visit qualified dentists in the past and many of them did not know the right way of doing tooth brushing. Hence, deaf and dumb individuals lack basic knowledge about oral health and dental treatment needs. Conclusion: The study concluded that the awareness level of oral health and dental treatment needs is low among individuals with hearing and speech impairments (deaf and dumb) in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract
Objectives: To assess the prevalence of periodontal disease among patients undergoing renal dialysis. Methods: Sixty hemodialysis patients (30 males, 30 females) with a mean age of 44.4±9.5 years comprised the study group. Periodontal parameters such as plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured in these patients and 60 age and sex-matched control subjects. The data was tabulated and analyzed. Results: The mean duration of dialysis was 5.50±3.02 years. The plaque index (PI) bleeding on probing (BOP), Periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were significantly higher in patients undergoing hemodialysis than in control subjects. The mean clinical attachment level was significantly higher among the dialysis patients (2.78±0.83 mm) than the control subjects (1.97±0.53 mm). The plaque index and bleeding on probing also showed a similar pattern in patients undergoing hemodialysis compared to control patients. The prevalence and severity of periodontal disease seems to be higher in patients undergoing dialysis. Conclusion: From the observations of this study, it can be concluded that patients undergoing hemodialysis are more prone to periodontal diseases. Further studies with a larger population and a comparison with the duration of dialysis may further substantiate the current findings.

Abstract
Background To determine the prevalence of dental erosion and its association to commonly used beverages and snacks among 3 to 5 year old preschool children in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods Three hundred eighty-eight preschool children between 3 and 5 years old were selected from 10 different schools using a cluster random sample selection; there were 184 (47%) boys and 204 (53%) girls. The surfaces of each tooth were examined for erosion, and the level of tooth wear was recorded. Data on the frequently used beverages and snacks were obtained by questionnaires completed by the parents of the preschool children. Results Among the 388 children examined, 47% exhibited low erosion, 10% exhibited moderate erosion and 4% exhibited severe erosion. There was no statistically significant difference between boys and girls in terms of the prevalence of erosion. Sixty percent of the children regularly consumed juice drinks. Among daily consumers, 84% of children showed erosion prevalence with strongly significant association (p < 0.005). Holding the drink in the mouth also showed a significant association with erosion (p < 0.02). Conclusion It was concluded that an association was found between the prevalence of dental erosion and the frequency of citrus and carbonated juice consumed by the preschool children in Saudi Arabia.
