Abstract
It is by now well known that the physical living environment has a major impact on people's life, but the neural structures involved in this relationship remain to be explored. Most studies investigating this relationship only focus on single environmental predictors. In order to understand how the multitude of factors constituting the living environment relate to brain structure we used data from the UK Biobank (n = 21,094; age Mean = 63.35 years; SD = 7.46; range = 45-82) to examine how individuals' immediate characteristics around the home address (e.g., green space; air pollution in the neighborhood) are associated with hippocampal volume, a brain region known to be highly plastic. We accounted for common demographic factors that have been shown to be associated with brain structure and known factors such as sex, income, education, and age. We made use of an analytical paradigm based on the feature importance estimation and recursive feature elimination with decision tree ensembles as well as linear regression analysis. Results identified a subset of environmental measures (e.g., pollution, green space, noise) most strongly associated with hippocampal volume across adulthood. Findings highlight the importance of the environment for individuals' brain structure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Indoor air pollution exposure is harmful to people's physical and mental health, especially in the elderly population. Depressive symptoms are the most common mental health issue among elderly individuals. However, evidence linking the frequency of indoor natural ventilation to depressive symptoms in the elderly population is limited. METHODS This study included 7887 individuals 65Â years and older from 2017 to 2018 the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The frequency of indoor window ventilation was measured as the self-reported times of ventilation of indoor window per week in each season, and the four seasons' scores were added up to calculate the annual ventilation frequency. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale (CESD). Using three models adjusted for demographic, socio-economic, health status, and environmental factors successively, the correlation between indoor window ventilation frequency and depressive symptoms was verified through logistic regression. RESULTS Among the 7887 elderly people included in this study, 1952 (24.7Â %) had depressive symptoms. In the fully adjusted model, compared with the lower indoor annual ventilation frequency group, high indoor annual ventilation frequency group was significantly associated with a 33Â % (OR: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.51-0.88) lower probability of depressive symptoms. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis yielded similar results. CONCLUSIONS High frequency of window ventilation is significantly associated with the lower risk of depressive symptoms in Chinese individuals aged 65 and older. This result provides strong evidence for health intervention and policy formulation.

Abstract
We investigated the association between the immediate physical environment of individuals and individual fluctuations of momentary affective well-being in everyday life with a focus on medium sized metropolitan areas in Europe representing a typical living environment of a large proportion of the world's population. The sample comprised 365 individuals (54.8 % female) with participants ranging from 14.08 to 88.27 years of age (MÂ =Â 43.9, SDÂ =Â 20.9). In an geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA), participants were prompted six times a day on at least 9 days over the course of 3 weeks, covering a total of six weekdays and three weekend days on mobile phones to report their momentary affective well-being. Urban land use categories (forest, water, urban green) were assessed with GPS-localization as environmental variables. Additionally, sunshine, rainfall, whether participants were inside or outside as well as whether they were alone or had company were included into the analyses. We used dynamic structural equation modelling to model the inter- and intraindividual differences as well as fluctuations and assess potential covariates while acknowledging the autoregressive nature of affect. The results showed that on individual level, fluctuations of momentary affective well-being were associated with sunshine, having company and travelling. No significant association emerged for urban green, forest, and water neither within individuals nor between. Methodological as well as conceptual implications are discussed and an interpretation of the present findings are provided.

Abstract
This narrative review describes the research on the effects of the association between environmental context and medications, suggesting the benefit of specific design interventions in adjunction to pharmacotherapy. The literature on Evidence-Based Design (EBD) studies and Neuro-Architecture show how contact with light, nature, and specific physical features of urban and interior architecture may enhance the effects of analgesic, anxiolytics, and antidepressant drugs. This interaction mirrors those already known between psychedelics, drugs of abuse, and setting. Considering that the physical feature of space is a component of the complex placebo configuration, the aim is to highlight those elements of built or natural space that may help to improve drug response in terms of efficacy, tolerability, safety, and compliance. Ecocebo, the integration of design approaches such as EBD and Neuro-Architecture may thus contribute to a more efficient, cost-sensitive, and sustainable pharmacotherapy.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that natural window views are beneficial for mental health, but it is still unclear which specific features constitute a 'natural' window view. On the other hand, studies on image analysis found that low-level visual features (LLVFs) are associated with perceived naturalness, but mainly conducted experiments with brief stimulus presentations. In this study, research on the effects of window views on mental health was combined with the detailed analysis of LLVFs. Healthy adults rated window views from their home and sent in photographs of those views for analysis. Content validity of the 'ecological' view assessment was evaluated by checking correlations of LLVFs with window view ratings. Afterwards, it was explored which of the LLVFs best explained variance in perceived percentage of nature and man-made elements, and in ratings of view quality. Criterion validity was tested by investigating which variables were associated with negative affect and impulsive decision-making. The objective and subjective assessments of nature/sky in the view were aligned but objective brightness was unreliable. The perceived percentage of nature was significantly explained by green pixel ratio, while view quality was associated with fractals, saturation, sky pixel ratio and straight edge density. The higher subjective brightness of rooms was associated with a lower negative affect, whereas results for impulsive decision-making were inconsistent. The research highlights the validity to apply LLVFs analysis to ecological window views. For affect, subjective brightness seemed to be more relevant than LLVFs. For impulsive decision-making, performance context needs to be controlled in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have reported inverse associations between exposure to residential greenness and mortality. Greenness has also been associated with better surgical recovery. However, studies have had small sample sizes and have been restricted to clinical settings. We investigated the association between exposure to residential greenness and all-cause mortality among a cohort of cardiac patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. METHODS We studied this cohort of 3,128 CABG patients between 2004 and 2009 at seven cardiothoracic departments in Israel and followed patients until death or 1st May 2021. We collected covariate information at the time of surgery and calculated the patient-level average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) over the entire follow-up in a 300 m buffer from the home address. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate associations between greenness and death, adjusting for age, sex, origin, socioeconomic status, type of hospital admission, peripherality, air pollution, and distance from the sea. RESULTS Mean age at surgery was 63.8 ± 10.6 for men and 69.5 ± 10.0 for women. During an average of 12.1 years of follow-up (37,912 person-years), 1,442 (46%) patients died. A fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards model estimated a 7% lower risk of mortality (HR: 0.93, 95% CI = [0.85, 1.00]) per 1 interquartile range width increase (0.04) in NDVI. Results were robust to the use of different buffer sizes (100 m-1,250 m from the home) and to the use of average NDVI exposure during the first versus the last 2 years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Residential greenness was associated with lower risk of mortality in CABG patients.

Abstract
Alternative care facilities (ACFs) based on large-space public buildings were widely used early at the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, studies have shown that the indoor spatial environment of ACFs can significantly induce mental health problems among users. Thus, this study hypothesizes that improving the visual environment in the interiors of large-space ACFs may reduce mental health problems among users. To verify this hypothesis, this study used critical analysis to screen the influencing factors and used analytic hierarchy process analysis to determine the weights. Particularly, the analyses were based on ACF research in Wuhan and questionnaire surveys of patients with experience using ACFs. Subsequently, virtual reality experiments were conducted to measure physiological indicators and subjective questionnaire collection based on the orthogonal experimental design of the four screened visual environment components. The results revealed the following related to large-space ACFs: 1) Lifestyle support was the most dominant patient requirement and preference for the visual environment. 2) The visual environment can influence the participants' efficiency of psychological stress relief, emotional regulation, and subjective perception. 3) Different design characteristics of the four visual environment components were causally related to restorative effects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study analyzing patients' preferences and psychological needs for the visual environment of large-space ACFs and combining subjective and objective measures to investigate the restorative effects of the visual environment. Improving the quality of the visual environment in large-space ACFs presents an effective intervention for alleviating the psychological problems of admitted patients.
