Abstract
Diagnosis and treatment of cancer constitute a deeply stressful experience that involves unique and common problems and generates uncertainty, fear and emotional distress. Furthermore, there are reciprocal interactions between psychological stress and cancer in the clinical settings. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the links of stress with cancer. A growing body of epidemiological and preclinical studies have suggested that stress affects cancer progression, and metastasis and treatment outcomes. Furthermore, stress elicits premature aging and deterioration of the immune system (known as immunosenescence), causing vulnerability to infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers. In this review, we describe recent advances in how stress affects cancer progression through specific stress hormones and receptor systems as well as intracellular molecular processes, and discuss how stress-evoked neuroendocrine molecules regulate local and systemic immune responses in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, we review the molecular mechanisms of immunosenescence and evidence of psychological stress-evoked immunosenescence, highlighting the clinical value for available psychological and/or pharmacological interventions for psychological stress in patients with cancer. Based on existing evidence and emerging mechanistic insights, factors linked with psychological stress, immunosenescence and complications in cancer survivors need to be determined in future studies, and screening programs should be added to follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the lack of available knowledge in the current literature, this systematic review and meta-analysis was aimed to assess the effectiveness of exercise-based lifestyle interventions, including healthy diet and/or psychological well-being on mental, physical and global health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults after cancer treatment. METHODS MEDLINE (via PubMed) and Web of Science databases were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published until August 2024 evaluating exercise-based lifestyle interventions, including healthy diet and/or psychological well-being, which assessed mental, physical and global HRQoL. RESULTS Of 6193 screened studies, 32 RCTs met the criteria. The total sample comprised 5528 participants (3003 intervention and 2525 control). There was a small effect size in a pooled analysis that found exercise-based lifestyle interventions improve mental HRQoL (d 0.11, 95 % CI 0.05 to 0.18). These effects were greater in those studies that combined exercise with psychological well-being (d = 0.19, P = 0.004), and with moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise (moderate intensity; d = 0.11, P = 0.02, high intensity; d = 0.16, P = 0.02, aerobic exercise; d = 0.16, P = 0.26). CONCLUSIONS Exercise-based lifestyle interventions do not enhance physical nor global HRQoL, yet those combined with psychological well-being seem to improve mental HRQoL in individuals after cancer treatment. Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the efficacy of the different mind-body exercises (MBEs) for quality of life (QOL) and cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in women breast cancer (BC) survivors. METHODS This review searched published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in eight electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, EBSCO, CNKI, VIP, and WanFang from inception to October 30, 2023. NMA and comparative effects ranking were performed using STATA 17.0 software. RESULTS This study included 121 studies with 11,072 women BC patients and eight different MBEs. Baduanjin showed the largest effect size in significantly improving subjective QOL (SMD = 3.03, 95% CI (2.04, 4.01)) compared with the control group, followed by relaxation training (SMD = 1.44, 95% CI (1.04, 1.85)), yoga (SMD = 0.89, 95% CI (0.36, 1.42)), mindfulness (SMD = 0.83, 95% CI (0.54, 1.12)), and Tai chi (SMD = 0.76, 95% CI (0.04, 1.48)). Furthermore, Tai chi (SMD = - 1.42, 95% CI (- 2.21, - 0.63)) ranked first in significantly reducing CRF in BC patients compared with the control group, followed by mindfulness (SMD = - 0.81, 95% CI (- 1.11, - 0.50)), relaxation training (SMD = - 0.70, 95% CI (- 1.12, - 0.28)), and yoga (SMD = - 0.53, 95% CI (- 0.88, - 0.18)). CONCLUSIONS Baduanjin and Tai chi are the most effective MBEs for improving QOL and CRF in female BC survivors, respectively. We recommend that healthcare providers prioritize Baduanjin and Tai chi as complementary therapies for BC survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Baduanjin and Tai chi have significant effects on improving the QOL of breast cancer patients and alleviating CRF, which is worthy of promotion and application.

Abstract
Introduction: The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program for breast cancer survivors (MBSR [BCs]) is a stress-reducing program designed to increase cognitive functioning through four meditational practices. This randomized clinical trial aimed to determine if improvements in cognitive functioning and perceived cognitive abilities achieved from the MBSR(BC) were mediated through increased mindfulness, decreased rumination, and decreased perceived stress. Methods: Breast cancer survivors (BCSs) who met inclusion criteria of stage I, II, or III BC and received either chemotherapy (CT) or both CT and radiation were randomized to either the 6-week MBSR(BC), or Breast Cancer Education Support (BCES) program, or to a usual care (UC) regimen. Analysis of covariance was first implemented to identify potential mediators, followed by a formal mediational analysis to evaluate the effects of MBSR(BC) on 6-, 12-, and 26-week outcomes. Results: After consent, 212 BCS were randomized to MBSR(BC) (n = 91), BCES (n = 90), or UC (n = 31). The mean age was 56.5 and the majority of the BCS, 73.1%, were White and non-Hispanic. Results showed increases in "observing" as part of mindfulness as a potential mediator of MBSR(BC) effects on impairments on quality of life and logical memory at 6 months relative to UC. No mediation effects were identified for outcomes measured at 6 or 12 weeks and also when MBSR(BC) was compared with the BCES program. Discussion: These results partially supported our hypothesis that improvement in cognitive functioning would occur through increased mindfulness. Although few mediating relationships were identified, results showed a relationship between mindfulness and cognitive functioning. Both mediating relationships occurred through increases in "observing," a subconcept of "mindfulness," when compared to the MBSR(BC) with UC at 6 months. This study shows that mediators may help "optimize" clinical therapeutic treatment effects, thus contributing to the advancement of science. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov, www. Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetics may influence symptoms experienced by breast cancer survivors (BCS) by moderating the effects of stress-reducing interventions, including the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR(BC)) program, to reduce symptom severity. As part of a larger clinical trial, the aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variants as moderators of MBSR(BC) on improvements among BCS in cognitive functioning and symptoms. METHODS BCS (n = 128) were randomized to MBSR(BC) or the Breast Cancer Education Support Program. Objective neuropsychological and subjective measures of cognitive performance, and psychological and physical symptoms were collected at baseline, 6, 12, and 26 weeks. Linear mixed models were implemented to identify MBSR(BC)'s effects over time. A total of 22 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 20 genes known to be related to these symptoms were investigated using genomic DNA. These SNPs were tested as moderators of MBSR(BC) program effects. RESULTS Results showed MBSR(BC) participants experienced significantly greater benefits in cognitive functioning, however, the level of benefit varied based on one's genetic profile. Effects sizes, consistency across similar measures were investigated. Among 22 candidate SNPs, rs4680 in COMT, rs1800497 in ANKK1, and rs6277 in DRD2 demonstrated the strongest, most consistent positive effects in moderating MBSR(BC)'s impact on cognitive outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Although the effects were small, this translational research may potentially identify BCS with genotypes that would be most influenced by the MBSR(BC) program. These results may be used to develop personalized intervention programs tailored to the genetic profile of each breast cancer survivor who received chemotherapy or chemotherapy and radiation. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We evaluated the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Adaptive Coping with Disease Scale (ACDS) questionnaire for Turkish patients with cancer. METHODS A total of 175 patients with cancer aged 18 to 65 years were referred to a university hospital in Ankara, Türkiye. The patients, selected by convenience sampling in 2024, completed the Descriptive Form and Turkish versions of the ACDS questionnaire. The construct validity of the scale was assessed through confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis. Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationships between item-total scores and item-subscale total scores. The reliability of the scale was determined using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In addition, the scale language validity and test-retest reliability were evaluated. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics and AMOS 25. RESULTS The scale demonstrated high validity (content validity index = 0.97, interclass coefficient = 0.721, P < .001), indicating high stability and consistency of test scores over time. The comparative fit index confirmed the six-factor structure of the ACDS scale, excluding item 13. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient was 0.738, and Bartlett's test yielded a value of 2305.623 (P < .001). Fit indices indicated a good model fit (χ²/degrees of freedom = 1.98, root mean square error of approximation = 0.074, comparative fit index = 0.815). The scale exhibited acceptable internal consistency, with an overall Cronbach's alpha of 0.78. The total explained variance ratio was 57.14%. CONCLUSIONS The Turkish version of ACDS in patients with cancer is a reliable and valid questionnaire that can be used in clinics and research. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Nurses can use the ACDS to assess the level of disease-related stress experienced by patients with cancer. In addition, they can guide the patients to develop effective coping methods and a better quality of life.

Abstract
Symptoms of depression represent a significant burden to patients with breast cancer, not only because of the psychological stress associated with their diagnosis, but also because of the adverse effects of its treatment. We reviewed the clinical trials examining the management of the symptoms of depression in breast cancer patients through different non-pharmacological interventions in different databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the American Psychological Association). Cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as acceptance and commitment therapy have been effective in improving symptoms of depression in cancer patients with moderate to severe symptoms. Physical exercise, yoga, mindfulness, and support groups have been shown to benefit patients with mild depressive symptoms. These interventions not only showed positive results in interventions in women with breast cancer in terms of the symptoms of depression, but also highlighted their benefits for comorbid anxiety, stress, and poor sleep quality; moreover, it is suggested that these interventions should be leveraged to manage mental health issues in breast cancer patients. The molecular effects of these interventions, such as the reduction in inflammatory cytokines and cortisol levels, have seldom been reported and need further studies.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cancer type among women globally, and its chemotherapy often results in multiple side effects, compromising the patient's quality of life. Our study aimed to analyze the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on the quality of life in Brazilian women with breast cancer within the public health system. This research was a one-year, observational, longitudinal study, conducted at a charitable health facility, examining the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on these women's quality of life. Sociodemographic and clinical data were extracted from medical records. Quality of life parameters were gauged using Portuguese-validated questionnaires: EORTC.QLQ - C30 version 3.0, EORTC.BR-23, Body Image Scale (BIS), BPI-SF pain scale, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). These tools were utilized at three intervals: before the start of systemic treatment, after three months (before initiating paclitaxel), and upon concluding neoadjuvant therapy. Qualitative variables were tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. As the continuous variables referring to the questionnaires did not show normal distribution, non-parametric tests were used: Friedman tests for paired pairs, and Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests for multiple comparisons. In all tests, the significance level adopted was 5%. The software used for the analysis was SPSS. Our findings revealed a decline in quality of life, observing deterioration in the role, social, and cognitive functioning domains. Additionally, symptoms like fatigue, hyporexia, constipation, and diarrhea became more pronounced during the treatment. The presence of minimal depressive symptoms, associated with systemic therapy side effects also contributed to this worsening. Notably, there were no improvements in any quality of life-related parameters, and no discernible differences were observed in pain levels or body image across the evaluated periods.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the mediating role of resilience and the moderating role of grip strength (handgrip) in the relationship between mindfulness and non-restorative sleep (NRS) and evaluated the non-linear association between mindfulness and NRS among university freshmen students. DESIGN This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. METHOD A total of 384 university students were recruited from Be Resilient to Nursing Career (BRNC) from two universities in June 2022. The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Non-restorative Sleep Scale, and handgrip were administered. Latent profile analysis, moderated mediation analysis, and generalized additive model analysis were performed. RESULTS The following three subgroups were identified through the latent profile analysis: low mindfulness (21%), medium mindfulness (49.4%), and high mindfulness (29.6%). While the significant mediating role of resilience between mindfulness and NRS was confirmed (SE = 0.041, p < 0.05), the moderating role of handgrip was not statistically significant. A non-linear relationship was verified between mindfulness and NRS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on fear of cancer recurrence in patients with cancer by synthesizing evidence from various studies using the net meta-analysis (NMA) approach. Additionally, the study sought to rank the efficacy of these interventions. METHODS Two investigators independently searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science databases to identify randomized controlled trials(RCTs) that met the inclusion criteria. The search encompassed the period from the inception of the database to December 2023. The included studies were then subjected to a quality assessment, and a network meta-analysis was performed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the interventions. RESULTS This study included 27 RCTs involving 3009 patients and examined seven types of non-pharmacological interventions. The NMA results indicated that, based on the Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking curve, Cancer and Living Meaningfully (CALM) was the most effective intervention (100 %), followed by Mindfulness Therapy (MT) at 76.5 % and Couples' Skills Training (CST) at 60.6 %. However, the league table results showed that, compared to the waitlist group, the effects of CALM [SMD = -4.83, 95 % CI (-5.93, -3.73)] and CST [SMD = -0.86, 95 % CI (-1.65, -0.07)] were significant, while MT [SMD = -1.52, 95 % CI (-3.46, 0.43)] did not reach statistical significance. Furthermore, CST was more effective than Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [SMD = -2.98, 95 % CI (-5.40, -0.56)]. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that CALM is the most effective intervention for addressing mental health issues.

Abstract
Introduction: The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program for breast cancer survivors (BCS) is designed to enhance cognitive training through formal and informal meditational practices. This randomized clinical trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate if BCS assigned to either the MBSR(BC), Breast Cancer Education Support (BCES), or Usual Care (UC) regimens experienced greater improvements at 6, 12, and 26 weeks on objective and subjective cognitive performance. Methods: BCS (n = 212) randomized to a three-group RCT: MBSR(BC) (n = 91), BCES (n = 90), or UC (n = 31) were assessed on cognitive performance and symptoms at baseline, 6, 12, and 26 weeks. Linear mixed models were fit to evaluate the effects of the MBSR(BC) program, hypothesizing ordered effect improvements: (MBSR[BC] highest, BCES intermediate, UC lowest) along with baseline characteristics evaluated as moderators. Results: Of the BCS (mean age of 57), 73% were White, and non-Hispanic, and 77% received both chemotherapy (CT) and radiation. Cognitive performance improved in all groups. Although there were no statistically significant between-group differences in cognitive outcomes, significant symptom reductions occurred for the MBSR(BC) group (p = 0.003). Within-group effect size analysis at 26 weeks showed substantial improvements in all three groups (effect sizes >0.50) in subjective impairments and quality of life (effect size >0.50) and objective measures of cognitive performance. MBSR(BC) showed the largest within-group effect size in the reduction of fatigue (effect size = 0.81). Effect sizes occurred in the hypothesized direction for 10 of the 18 outcomes. Discussion: Although the MBSR(BC) program did not show significant differences in cognitive performance compared with BCES and UC, all groups improved and reductions in fatigue were beneficial for MBSR(BC). Results suggest that cognitive performance may improve after CT over time considering one's natural history. Furthermore, BCS enrolled in RCTs may be more motivated to improve their health status (NCT02786797).

Abstract
Cancer is one of the deadliest health menaces humans have ever witnessed. It is a leading cause of human mortality. Today, it remains a main leading cause of death globally primarily due to lifestyle changes and population ageing. A total of ~12.7 million cancer cases and 7.6 million cancer deaths were reported in 2008. In developing countries, cancer accounted for 56% of cases and 64% of deaths. Tamoxifen is the most reputable and recommended specific oestrogen receptor modulator drug used for the treatment of breast cancer. In the past decade, algae have demonstrated remarkable potency for advanced life applications. They can remain a focus of interest in the coming decades because they are one of the most diverse organisms in the entire ecosystem with immense bio nutritional benefits. Algae and their extracts play a pivotal role in the pharmaceutical industry as bioactive compounds and new drugs and nutraceutical industry as probiotics and antioxidants. However, a broad range of the health benefits of these organisms remains to be explored. The present review highlights the applications and co-application of microalgal crude extracts with tamoxifen for breast cancer immunotherapy. Given that recent studies have suggested that tamoxifen is an essential and primary treatment for breast cancer, the present review focused on the identification of a new treatment approach involving the co-application of tamoxifen and microalgal extracts to provide promising anticancer activity with few side effects on normal cells. The present review includes a general background and blueprint for the use of microalgal extracts as potential and affordable treatments or adjuncts for breast cancer management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fear of cancer recurrence is one of the psychological distresses for patients with cancer and cancer survivors, which poses a physical and psychological threat. There is scant evidence on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy in reducing fear of cancer recurrence. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy for fear of cancer recurrence. METHOD The review was reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses statement. Seven databases were systematically searched from inception to 31 March 2023. Randomised controlled trials implementing cognitive-behavioural therapy interventions and studies reporting fear of cancer recurrence were included. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2. RESULTS A total of 32 randomised controlled trials involving 1515 cancer survivors and 1845 patients with cancer undergoing treatment were included. The meta-analysis indicated a significant effect of cognitive-behavioural therapy on fear of cancer recurrence in patients with cancer and cancer survivors compared with controls (g=-0.65; 95% CI=-0.86, -0.44; p<0.001). The results of the overall risk of bias indicated some concerns in 4 studies and a high risk in 28 studies. CONCLUSION The study indicated the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy intervention for fear of cancer recurrence in patients with cancer and cancer survivors, which should inform future clinical practice of interventions for the treatment of fear of cancer recurrence. Abstract
Objective: This investigation was conducted to assess and contrast the influence of psychosocial interventions on cancer recurrence among individuals diagnosed with cancer, intending to provide evidence-based guidance for both patients and healthcare providers. Design: The present study exclusively gathered randomized controlled trials (RCTs) via conducting a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus. This study aimed to compare the impact of psychosocial interventions on the fear of cancer recurrence among individuals diagnosed with cancer. The methodological quality of studies involved in the analysis was assessed using the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool. The data was then analyzed using appropriate software. Results: The RCTs were collected from the earliest possible date until March 2023. The study encompassed 21 RCTs, and the cumulative sample size was 2634. The findings of network meta-analysis indicate that the ConquerFear-HK intervention is associated with a statistically significant reduction in fear of cancer recurrence among individuals with cancer (SUCRA: 99.2%). Conclusion: According to the ranking plot of the network, it can be asserted that the ConquerFear-HK intervention exhibited superior efficacy as a psychological treatment in reducing cancer patients' fear of cancer relapse.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention has been widely used to reduce the burden of symptoms in cancer patients, and its effectiveness has been proven. However, the effectiveness of MBSR on depression, anxiety, fatigue, quality of life (QOL), posttraumatic growth (PTG), fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), pain, and sleep in breast cancer patients has not yet been determined. This study aims to determine the role of mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy in patients with breast cancer. OBJECTIVES The objective was to systematically review the literature to explore the effect of MBSR on anxiety, depression, QOL, PTG, fatigue, FCR, pain, stress and sleep in breast cancer patients. To explore the effect of 8-week versus 6-week MBSR on the 9 indicators. Data were extracted from the original RCT study at the end of the intervention and three months after baseline to explore whether the effects of the intervention were sustained. METHODS We conducted searches on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure from inception to November 2023. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials of breast cancer patients who received mindfulness stress reduction intervention, reporting outcomes for anxiety, depression, fatigue, QOL, PTG, FCR, pain, stress, and sleep. Two researchers conducted separate reviews of the abstract and full text, extracted data, and independently evaluated the risk of bias using the Cochrane 'Bias Risk Assessment tool'. The meta-analysis utilized Review Manager 5.4 to conduct the study, and the effect size was determined using the standardized mean difference and its corresponding 95% confidence interval. RESULTS The final analysis included 15 studies with a total of 1937 patients. At the end of the intervention, the interventions with a duration of eight weeks led to a significant reduction in anxiety [SMD=-0.60, 95% CI (-0.78, -0.43), P < 0.00001, I2 = 31%], depression [SMD=-0.39, 95% CI (-0.59, -0.19), P = 0.0001, I2 = 55%], and QOL [542 participants, SMD = 0.54, 95% CI (0.30, 0.79), P < 0.0001, I2 = 49%], whereas no statistically significant effects were found in the intervention with a duration of six weeks. Similarly, in 3 months after baseline, the interventions with a duration of eight weeks led to a significant reduction in depression and QOL, however, no statistically significant effects were found at the 6-week intervention. MBSR led to a significant improvement in PTG at end of intervention [MD = 6.25, 95% CI (4.26, 8.25), P < 0.00001, I2 = 0%] and PTG 3 months after baseline. We found that MBSR reduced the fatigue status at end of intervention, but had no significant effect on fatigue status 3 months after baseline. There was no significant difference in improving pain, stress, and FCR compared to usual care. CONCLUSIONS In terms of effects on QOL, anxiety, depression, and fatigue, the 8-week MBSR intervention showed better results than the 6-week MBSR intervention. The intervention of MBSR on PTG was effective, and the effect lasted until 3 months after baseline. Future studies could further identify the most effective intervention components in MBSR. Abstract
The majority of cancer patients experience fatigue during the course of their illness. Fatigue should not be seen as an inevitable consequence of cancer and its treatment. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a multidimensional symptom complex that is influenced by a variety of factors. Complementary medicine approaches offer potentially promising strategies to address this fatigue and can therefore be a valuable addition to conventional therapies.In this narrative review, complementary medicine treatment approaches for tumor-associated fatigue are presented according to the historical development and current scientific evidence. The focus is on methods with the highest current evidence based on the recommendations of national and international guidelines. Therapeutic approaches from mind-body medicine, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), yoga, tai chi, and qigong, as well as acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and phytotherapeutic treatment approaches are presented.In Germany, the complementary therapies listed here are not generally covered by health insurances. However, a few clinics have developed comprehensive programs in mind-body medicine, for which cost coverage has already been obtained. As a result, complementary medical treatments for cancer-related fatigue that adhere to national and international guidelines are typically available only as private services or within the framework of study participation.

Abstract
Mindfulness-based interventions have been receiving growing attention in cancer care. This study was performed to determine the effect of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on depression and quality of life in cancer patients. The screenings in the study were performed in January to May 2023 through the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and YÖK Thesis Center databases. After the reviews, 14 studies were included in the study. This meta-analysis showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction programs were effective on depression (SMD: -0.363; 95% CI: -0.711 to 0.015; Z = -2.042; P = .041; I2 = 85.229%) and quality of life (SMD: 0.363; 95 CI%: 0.111-0.615; Z = 2.822; P = .005; I2 = 75.222%). The type of cancer (SMD: 0.385; CI: between 0.005 and 0.528; P = .000); duration of therapy (SMD: 0.243; CI: between 0.093 and 0.393; P = .002); the person providing therapy (SMD: 0.335; CI: between 0.133 and 0.507; P = .001); scale used (SMD: 0.290; CI: between 0.148 and 0.432; P = .000); and the origin of the study (SMD: 0.298; CI: between 0.158 and 0.438; P = .000) moderators were found to play a role in the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on the quality of life of cancer patients. The mindfulness-based stress reduction program yields positive outcomes by reducing depression, enhancing the quality of life in cancer patients, and promoting overall mental well-being in individuals.

Abstract
Introduction Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been widely used for improving psychological symptoms and sleep quality in breast cancer patients and has a positive impact on posttraumatic growth and immunology. Moreover, MBSR is increasingly being used in cancer-related fatigue (CRF) intervention studies for breast cancer patients, but conflicting results also exist. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of MBSR on CRF in patients with breast cancer. Methods A comprehensive computer search of the Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China Biomedical Document Service System, China Knowledge Infrastructure Engineering, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and VIP databases was performed. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published before April 10, 2023, were identified. The primary outcome was cancer-related fatigue associated with breast cancer. Two researchers independently screened the studies, extracted the data, and evaluated the methodological quality of the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Meta-analysis of the outcome indicators was performed using STATA 16.0 software. Results A total of 13 studies were included, including 1992 patients (997 patients in the MBSR group and 1015 patients in the control group). Compared with conventional care, MBSR significantly alleviated the symptoms of CRF in breast cancer patients (SMD=-0.32, 95% CI [-0.42, -0.22], z=6.54, p<.01). Under the supervision of experts, the 8-week MBSR had a great influence on CRF, especially in the Asian population. Conclusions MBSR is effective in the treatment of CRF induced by breast cancer, and no obvious adverse effects occur; thus, MBSR can be recommended as a beneficial adjuvant therapy for treating CRF in breast cancer patients. Abstract
PURPOSE Depression is associated with poor outcomes in breast cancer survivors (BCSs), with higher prevalence among younger women. The Pathways to Wellness (PTW; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03025139) randomized controlled trial (RCT) demonstrated beneficial effects of two behavioral interventions (survivorship education [SE] and mindful awareness practices [MAPs]) on depressive symptoms in younger BCS. We conducted an exploratory secondary analysis to identify moderators of intervention effects. METHODS Women diagnosed with stage 0 to III breast cancer at or before age 50 years who completed cancer treatment were randomly assigned to 6 weeks of SE (n = 81), MAPs (n = 85), or waitlist control (WLC; n = 81). Moderators assessed at baseline included psychological distress (depression and anxiety), intervention preference, preparedness for survivorship, and time since initial diagnosis. Linear regression models tested the modifying effects of each variable on postintervention depression in SE versus WLC and MAPs versus WLC. RESULTS Baseline levels of depression (β = -.03, P < .01) and anxiety (β = -.64, P = .02) moderated effects of SE on depressive symptoms, as did preparedness for survivorship (β = 3.17, P = .02). Participants randomly assigned to SE who had the highest levels of depression or anxiety and who felt least prepared for survivorship showed the largest reductions in depressive symptoms from preintervention to postintervention. Similar effects were not observed for MAPs. Intervention preference and time since diagnosis did not moderate intervention effects for either SE or MAPs. CONCLUSION Our 6-week, group-based SE program may be most beneficial for women with higher levels of psychological distress and those who feel least prepared for cancer survivorship. By contrast, a 6-week mindfulness awareness practice intervention appears to benefit younger BCS regardless of pretreatment characteristics.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article aims to offer a comprehensive review of optimal integrative medicine practices for geriatric oncology patients. Given the aging population and the global rise in cancer incidence, it is crucial to identify evidence-based modalities and employ an integrated approach to enhance cancer outcomes and quality of life in older adults. RECENT FINDINGS It has been predicted that 20.5% (6.9 million) of new cancer cases in 2050 will occur in adults over 80 years old.1 The increasing focus on lifestyle factors in healthy aging has shed light on various overlooked areas of significance. Notably, anti-inflammatory diets and the promotion of a healthy gut microbiome have demonstrated significant impacts on overall health outcomes, bolstering the body's innate capacity to combat disease. This review delves into further evidence and extrapolation concerning integrative approaches and their influence on cancer outcomes and older adults quality of life. The complexity and unique nature of cancer in older adults requires a wide range of support from medical providers. Incorporating various integrative techniques as part of cancer treatment and side effect support can improve health outcomes and patient's quality of life. Familiarity with the lifestyle interventions and other topics explored in this review equips healthcare providers to offer tailored and holistic care to geriatric patients navigating cancer.

Abstract
Psychological symptoms are notably prevalent in palliative care (PC) settings, significantly impacting quality of life for patients and their families. Given the inherent multidimensionality of suffering in PC, addressing these psychological aspects is essential. This article aims to introduce and integrate discrete concepts from various schools of psychotherapy, which are directly applicable to PC practices, thereby providing clinicians with a rich toolkit to manage psychological distress. The article focuses on 10 key concepts from different psychotherapeutic traditions. They are a small sample from the vast and deep pool of wisdom contained in psychotherapeutic theory, and they were selected due to their direct applicability to PC practice. Adopting psychotherapeutic principles, along with leveraging the interdisciplinary wisdom inherent in PC practice, enhances our therapeutic relationships in PC and empowers patients to navigate their illness with greater resilience and adaptive coping.

Abstract
The connection between chronic psychological stress and the onset of various diseases, including diabetes, HIV, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions, is well documented. This review synthesizes current research on the neurological, immune, hormonal, and genetic pathways through which stress influences disease progression, affecting multiple body systems: nervous, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, musculoskeletal, and integumentary. Central to this review is an evaluation of 16 Behavioral Stress Reduction Programs (BSRPs) across over 200 studies, assessing their effectiveness in mitigating stress-related health outcomes. While our findings suggest that BSRPs have the potential to enhance the effectiveness of medical therapies and reverse disease progression, the variability in study designs, sample sizes, and methodologies raises questions about the generalizability and robustness of these results. Future research should focus on long-term, large-scale studies with rigorous methodologies to validate the effectiveness of BSRPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most common malignancy that occurs in women. Due to the pain caused by the disease itself and the adverse reactions in the treatment process, breast cancer patients are prone to anxiety, depression, fear of recurrence, and other negative emotions, which seriously affect the quality of life. As a systematic stress reduction therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction is widely applied to the treatment of breast cancer patients and has been found by a growing number of studies to relieve stress, regulate mood, and improve the state. However, due to the absence of recent research and uniform outcome measures, previous studies have failed to fully explain the role of mindfulness-based stress reduction in improving the quality of life in breast cancer patients. OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate and compare the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy and standard care on the quality of life and psychological status of breast cancer patients. METHODS We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China's National Knowledge Infrastructure and the Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials up to July 2023 to identify candidate randomized clinical trials addressing the values of mindfulness-based stress reduction in breast cancer patients. RESULTS A total of 1644 patients participated in 11 randomized controlled trials. The results of the meta-analysis showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy can significantly reduce negative emotions such as perceived stress (MD = -1.46, 95%CI = -2.53 to -0.38, p = 0.03), depression (MD = -1.84, 95%CI = -3.99 to -0.30, p = 0.0004), anxiety (MD = -2.81, 95%CI = -5.31 to -0.32, p = 0.002), and fear of recurrence (MD = -1.27, 95%CI = -3.44 to 0.90, p = 0.0004). Mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy also has certain advantages in improving the coping ability (MD = 1.26, 95%CI = -3.23 to5.76, p = 0.03) and the emotional state (MD = -7.73, 95%CI = -27.34 to 11.88, p = 0.0007) of patients with breast cancer. CONCLUSION Our analyses support that, compared with standard care, mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy can significantly improve patients' coping ability, reduce adverse emotions and improve patients' emotional states.

Abstract
PURPOSE To update the ASCO guideline on the management of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in adult survivors of cancer. METHODS A multidisciplinary panel of medical oncology, geriatric oncology, internal medicine, psychology, psychiatry, exercise oncology, integrative medicine, behavioral oncology, nursing, and advocacy experts was convened. Guideline development involved a systematic literature review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2013-2023. RESULTS The evidence base consisted of 113 RCTs. Exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based programs led to improvements in CRF both during and after the completion of cancer treatment. Tai chi, qigong, and American ginseng showed benefits during treatment, whereas yoga, acupressure, and moxibustion helped to manage CRF after completion of treatment. Use of other dietary supplements did not improve CRF during or after cancer treatment. In patients at the end of life, CBT and corticosteroids showed benefits. Certainty and quality of evidence were low to moderate for CRF management interventions. RECOMMENDATIONS Clinicians should recommend exercise, CBT, mindfulness-based programs, and tai chi or qigong to reduce the severity of fatigue during cancer treatment. Psychoeducation and American ginseng may be recommended in adults undergoing cancer treatment. For survivors after completion of treatment, clinicians should recommend exercise, CBT, and mindfulness-based programs; in particular, CBT and mindfulness-based programs have shown efficacy for managing moderate to severe fatigue after treatment. Yoga, acupressure, and moxibustion may also be recommended. Patients at the end of life may be offered CBT and corticosteroids. Clinicians should not recommend L-carnitine, antidepressants, wakefulness agents, or routinely recommend psychostimulants to manage symptoms of CRF. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explores whether cancer patients' dysfunctional self-focus is a significant contributor to their fear of progression. In addition, we investigated whether their psychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep may mediate the relationship between these factors. METHODS We conducted a retrospective medical records review of 196 cancer patients who visited the Stress Management Clinic for the first time from March to September 2022. Their demographic information and responses to rating scales such as the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF), Dysfunctional Self-focus Attribution Scale (DSAS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Items (PHQ-9), State subcategory of the State and Trait of Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Cancer-related Dysfunctional Beliefs about Sleep scale (C-DBS), and numeric rating scales of pain and fatigue were collected. RESULTS A high FoP-Q-SF score was significantly correlated with high PHQ-9 (r=0.60), STAI-S (r=0.38), ISI (r=0.34), C-DBS (r=0.47), pain (r=0.24), fatigue (r=0.37), and DSAS (r=0.58, all p<0.001). A linear regression analysis showed that the FoP-Q-SF score was significantly predicted by younger age (β=-0.13, p=0.011), PHQ-9 (β=0.36, p<0.001), STAI-S (β=0.18, p=0.001), C-DBS (β=0.22, p<0.001), and DSAS (β=0.25, p<0.001). A mediation analysis showed that dysfunctional self-focus directly influenced patients' fear of progression. In addition, cancer patients' depression, anxiety, and cancer-related dysfunctional beliefs about sleep mediated this relationship. CONCLUSION We observed that dysfunctional self-focus may influence cancer patients' fear of progression, mediated by depression, anxiety, and cancer-related dysfunctional beliefs about sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fear of cancer recurrence is one of the psychological distresses that seriously affects the quality of life of breast cancer patients. However, the evidence for cognitive behavioral therapy on fear of cancer recurrence in breast cancer is limited. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing breast cancer patients' fear of cancer recurrence. METHODS Seven databases were searched for randomized controlled studies on cognitive behavioral therapy for fear of cancer recurrence in cancer patients from the inception of the database to April 30, 2023, with no language restrictions. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata MP 17. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool version 2 was used to assess the quality of the included studies. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation method. RESULTS This review includes a total of 13 randomized controlled trials with 1447 breast cancer patients and survivors. When compared with controls, meta-analysis revealed that cognitive behavioral therapy significantly reduced the fear of cancer recurrence (g = -0.44; 95% confidence interval, -0.75 to -0.13; P < .001), whereas subgroup analysis revealed that only mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was significant. The overall risk of bias was high. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation assessment showed a low overall quality of evidence. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive behavioral therapy may be effective in reducing fear of cancer recurrence in breast cancer patients, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is particularly worthy of implementation. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy may be used as an additional strategy to help manage breast cancer patients' fears of cancer recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) treatment has recently been revolutionized by the introduction of newer targeted agents, that helped tailoring therapies around the single patient. Along with increased survival rates, a careful evaluation of diet, lifestyle habits, physical activity, emotional and psychological experiences linked to the treatment journey, is now mandatory. However, a true proposal for an omnicomprehensive and "integrative" approach is still lacking in literature. METHODS A scientific board of internationally recognized specialists throughout different disciplines designed a shared proposal of holistic approach for BC patients. RESULTS A narrative review, containing information on BC treatment, endocrinological and diet aspects, physical activity, rehabilitation, integrative medicine, and digital narrative medicine, was developed. CONCLUSIONS In the context of a patient-centered care, BC treatment cannot be separated from a patient's long-term follow-up and care, and an organized interdisciplinary collaboration is the future in this disease's cure, to make sure that our patients will live longer and better. Abstract
A variety of evidence-based psychosocial treatments now exist for chronic pain. However, on average, effect sizes have tended to be modest and there is a high degree of heterogeneity in treatment response. In this focus article, we explore the potential role that therapist quality in delivering treatment may have in accounting for a degree of this variability in outcome. Therapist quality refers to the skillful delivery of treatment, harnessing both specific and common therapeutic factors during sessions. While recognized as important to assess and report in clinical trials by some reporting guidelines, few randomized controlled trials evaluating psychosocial treatments for chronic pain have reported on therapist factors. We reviewed the clinical trials included in three systematic reviews and meta-analyses of trials of cognitive-behavioral therapy (mainly), mindfulness-based interventions, and acceptance and commitment therapy. We found that of the 134 trials included, only nine assessed and reported therapist quality indicators, with a variety of procedures used. This is concerning as without knowledge of the quality in which treatments are delivered, the estimates of effect sizes reported may be misrepresented. We contextualize this finding by drawing on the broader psychotherapy literature which has shown that more skillful, effective therapists demonstrated ten times better patient response rates. Examination of the characteristics associated with these more effective therapists tends to indicate that skillful engagement of common factors in therapy sessions represents a distinguishing feature. We conclude by providing recommendations for assessing and reporting on therapist quality within clinical trials evaluating psychosocial treatments for chronic pain. PERSPECTIVE: Therapist quality in the delivery of psychosocial treatments for chronic pain has rarely been assessed in clinical trials. We propose that therapist quality indicators are an under-studied mechanism that potentially contributes to the heterogeneity of treatment outcomes. We provide recommendations for assessing and reporting on therapist quality in future trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social well-being impacts cancer patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and coping style. This secondary analysis was conducted to examine whether advanced prostate cancer survivors who had experienced low social well-being would benefit from a web-based cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) intervention. METHOD APC survivors (N = 192) who had received androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) were randomized to a 10-week CBSM or a health promotion (HP) control condition. A subsample of participants (n = 61) with low pre-intervention SWB (measured by social support from and relationship satisfaction with family and friends) was included in the study. Multilevel models compared participants' PC-specific quality of life (sexual, hormonal, urinary), affect-based psychosocial burden (cancer-related anxiety and distress), and coping strategies at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Covariates were included in all models as appropriate. RESULTS Participants randomized to the CBSM condition showed significantly greater improvements in fear of cancer recurrence and cancer-related intrusive thoughts than those in the HP control condition. A significant condition by time interaction was also found, indicating that CBSM improved participants' PC-related fear in both short- (6 months) and long-term (12 months). However, the CBSM intervention did not significantly impact APC-related symptom burden. Only for the urinary domain, clinically meaningful changes (CBSM vs HP) were observed. In addition, all participants, regardless of condition, reported less coping (e.g., emotion-, problem- and avoidance-focused) over time. CONCLUSION As predicted, the CBSM intervention improved several affect-based psychosocial outcomes for APC survivors with low baseline SWB.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of various intervention approaches on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients with breast cancer. Method Computer searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang databases from their establishment to June 2023. Selection was made using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 77 articles were included to compare the effects of 12 interventions on patients with breast cancer. Results Seventy-seven studies with 12 various interventions were examined. The network findings indicated that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (SMD, -1.56; 95%CI, -3.08~-0.04), Chinese traditional exercises (CTE) (SMD, -0.85; 95%CI, -1.34~-0.36), aerobic exercise (AE) (SMD, -0.77; 95%CI, -1.09~-0.45), multimodal exercise (ME) (SMD, -0.75; 95%CI, -1.26~-0.25), music interventions (MI) (SMD, -0.74; 95%CI, -1.45~-0.03), and yoga (YG) (SMD, -0.44; 95%CI, -0.83 to -0.06) can reduce CRF more than the control group (CG). For relaxation exercises (RE) (MD, -6.69; 95%CI, -9.81~-3.57), MI (MD, -5.45; 95%CI, -7.98~-2.92), AE (MD, -4.34; 95%CI, -5.90~-2.78), ME (MD, -3.47; 95%CI, -4.95~-1.99), YG (MD, -2.07; 95%CI, -3.56~-0.57), and mindfulness training (MD, -1.68; 95%CI, -2.91~-0.46), PSQI improvement was superior to CG. In addition, for CTE (MD, 11.39; 95%CI, 4.11-18.66), YG (MD, 11.28; 95%CI, 1.63-20.93), and AE (MD, 9.34; 95%CI, 0.26~18.42), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast improvement was superior to CG. Conclusion Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective measure for alleviating CRF in patients with breast cancer and Relaxation exercises (RE) is the most effective measure for improving sleep quality. In addition, Chinese traditional exercises (CTE) is the best measure for enhancing quality of life. Additional randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are expected to further investigate the efficacy and mechanisms of these interventions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-based therapies (MBTs) addressed to patients with cancer have been widely studied in the last two decades, and their efficacy has been systematically reviewed and meta-analysed. Although findings from literature highlight benefits of MBTs on several patients' health outcomes, these should be appraised taking into consideration the characteristics of the selected studies. In this systematic review, we summarised the current evidence of the efficacy of MBTs in improving the quality of life of both patients with cancer and their relatives, with a focus on the methodological quality, type of MBT evaluated and population involved in existing randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS We searched English language articles published until February 2021. Couples of authors independently applied inclusion criteria and extracted findings. Thirty RCTs were included. RESULTS Nearly half of the studies were performed in English-speaking countries outside of Europe, with females diagnosed with breast cancer. Most considered heterogeneous phases of illness; one study only was performed on relatives. In most cases, different measures were employed to evaluate the same outcome. The efficacy of MBTs has been demonstrated in 25 of the 30 included articles. The methodological quality of RCTs was acceptable. CONCLUSION The heterogeneity of studies' characteristics makes findings on the efficacy of MBTs poorly informative with reference to different clinical and cancer-related psychological conditions. Studies on more homogeneous samples by cancer site and phase, as well as performed in different cultural contexts, could provide a basis for better evaluating and targeting MBTs' protocols for the specific needs of patients with cancer and their relatives.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide evidence-based recommendations to health care providers on integrative approaches to managing anxiety and depression symptoms in adults living with cancer. METHODS The Society for Integrative Oncology and ASCO convened an expert panel of integrative oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, palliative oncology, social sciences, mind-body medicine, nursing, methodology, and patient advocacy representatives. The literature search included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials published from 1990 through 2023. Outcomes of interest included anxiety or depression symptoms as measured by validated psychometric tools, and adverse events. Expert panel members used this evidence and informal consensus with the Guidelines into Decision Support methodology to develop evidence-based guideline recommendations. RESULTS The literature search identified 110 relevant studies (30 systematic reviews and 80 randomized controlled trials) to inform the evidence base for this guideline. RECOMMENDATIONS Recommendations were made for mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), yoga, relaxation, music therapy, reflexology, and aromatherapy (using inhalation) for treating symptoms of anxiety during active treatment; and MBIs, yoga, acupuncture, tai chi and/or qigong, and reflexology for treating anxiety symptoms after cancer treatment. For depression symptoms, MBIs, yoga, music therapy, relaxation, and reflexology were recommended during treatment, and MBIs, yoga, and tai chi and/or qigong were recommended post-treatment. DISCUSSION Issues of patient-health care provider communication, health disparities, comorbid medical conditions, cost implications, guideline implementation, provider training and credentialing, and quality assurance of natural health products are discussed. While several approaches such as MBIs and yoga appear effective, limitations of the evidence base including assessment of risk of bias, nonstandardization of therapies, lack of diversity in study samples, and lack of active control conditions as well as future research directions are discussed.Additional information is available at www.asco.org/survivorship-guidelines.

Abstract
Breast cancer survivors may experience significant after effects from diagnoses of breast cancer and cancer directed therapies. This review synthesizes the evidence about optimal management of the sequelae of a diagnosis of breast cancer. It describes the side effects of chemotherapy and endocrine therapy and evidence based strategies for management of such effects, with particular attention to effects of therapies with curative intent. It includes strategies to promote health and wellness among breast cancer survivors, along with data to support the use of integrative oncology strategies. In addition, this review examines models of survivorship care and ways in which digital tools may facilitate communication between clinicians and patients. The strategies outlined in this review are paramount to supporting breast cancer survivors' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been suggested as an effective mind-body approach for relieving stress in patients with chronic diseases. As of yet, there is no conclusive research on MBSR's role in reducing affective disorders among cancer patients. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine whether MBSR has an impact on loneliness, anxiety, and depression in cancer patients. METHODS Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from the start of these databases to January 2nd, 2022 to identify relevant randomized controlled trials. Two authors independently conducted the literature search, collected the data, and performed the statistical analysis. In order to account for potential between-study heterogeneity, a random-effect model was used in the meta-analysis. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 16 studies with 2072 cancer patients. Among the 16 studies, 13 included patients with breast cancer, and the follow-up duration ranged from 6 to 53 weeks. Compared to controls receiving standard cancer care, interventions of MBSR with sessions for 6 to 8 weeks significantly improved loneliness (standard mean difference [SMD]: -0.35, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.59 to -0.12, P = .003, I2 = 46%), anxiety (SMD: -0.51, 95% CI: -0.73 to -0.30, P < .001, I2 = 77%), and depression (SMD: -0.61, 95% CI: -1.02 to -0.20, P = .004, I2 = 94%) in patients with cancer. CONCLUSION According to recent research, MBSR may be beneficial to patients diagnosed with cancer who are feeling lonely, anxious, or depressed.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Associated psychological symptoms include stress, adjustment difficulties, anxiety, depression, impaired cognitive function, sleep disturbances, altered body image, sexual dysfunction, and diminished overall well-being. Distress screening and assessment identifies women who will benefit from therapeutic interventions. Addressing these symptoms improves compliance with treatment and outcomes including disease-related outcomes, psychological symptoms, and quality of life. The most effective treatments include teaching coping skills such as expressing emotion, along with other structured cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and mindfulness approaches. Patients should be provided these psychosocial supports throughout their cancer journey.

Abstract
Persistent fatigue constitutes a prevalent and debilitating symptom in several diseases. The symptom is not effectively alleviated by pharmaceutical treatments, and meditation has been proposed as a non-pharmacological intervention. Indeed, meditation has been shown to reduce inflammatory/immune problems, pain, stress, anxiety and depression which are associated with pathological fatigue. This review synthesizes data from randomized control trials (RCTs) that explored the effect of meditation-based interventions (MeBIs) on fatigue in pathological conditions. Eight databases were searched from inception to April 2020. Thirty-four RCTs met eligibility criteria and covered six conditions (68% cancer), 32 of which were included in the meta-analysis. The main analysis showed an effect in favor of MeBIs compared to control groups (g = 0.62). Separate moderator analyses assessing control group, pathological condition, and MeBI type, highlighted a significantly moderating role of the control group. Indeed, compared to actively controlled studies, studies using a passive control group were associated with a statistically significantly more beneficial impact of the MeBIs (g = 0.83). These results indicate that MeBIs alleviate pathological fatigue and it seems that the studies with a passive control group showed a greater effect of MeBI on the reduction of fatigue compared to studies using active control groups. However, the specific effect of meditation type and pathological condition should be analyzed with more studies, and there remains a need to assess meditation effects on different types of fatigue (i.e., physical and mental) and in additional conditions (e.g., post-COVID-19).

Abstract
Psychosocial interventions for breast-cancer-related pain are effective, yet over 45% of survivors continue to struggle with this often-chronic side effect. This study evaluated multilevel indicators that can influence successful translation of interventions into clinical practice. The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework was applied to evaluate reporting of individual and setting/staff-level intervention indicators. A systematic search and multi-step screening process identified 31 randomized controlled trials for psychosocial interventions for breast cancer-related pain. Average reporting of indicators for individual-level dimensions (Reach and Effectiveness) were 65.2% and 62.3%, respectively. Comparatively, indicators for setting/staff-level dimensions were reported at a lower average frequency (Implementation, 46.8%; Adoption, 15.2%; Maintenance, 7.7%). Low reporting of setting/staff-level dimensions suggests gaps in the sustained implementation of psychosocial interventions. Implementation science methods and frameworks could improve trial design and accelerate the translation of psychosocial interventions for breast cancer-related pain into clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a common distressing condition. We investigated the efficacy of smartphone problem-solving therapy and behavioral activation applications in breast cancer survivors. METHODS This was a decentralized randomized trial. Participants were disease-free breast cancer survivors age 20-49 years who were randomly assigned to the smartphone-based intervention or waitlist control. Both groups received treatment as usual. The control group could access the smartphone apps during weeks 8-24. The intervention comprised smartphone problem-solving therapy and behavioral activation apps. The primary end point was the Concerns About Recurrence Scale at week 8. Secondary outcomes included the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory-Short Form (FCRI-SF), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Short-form Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS-SF34), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory at weeks 8 and 24 (trial registration: UMIN-CTR: UMIN000031140). RESULTS The intervention group included 223 participants, and the control group included 224 participants. Primary outcome data were obtained for 444 participants, and 213 participants in the intervention arm completed the week 24 assessment. The intervention group had statistically greater improvements than controls at week 8 on the Concerns About Recurrence Scale (difference -1.39; 95% CI, -1.93 to -0.85; P < .001), FCRI-SF (difference -1.65; 95% CI, -2.41 to -0.89; P < .001), HADS depression (difference -0.49; 95% CI, -0.98 to 0; P < .05), and SCNS-SF34 psychological domain (difference -1.49; 95% CI, -2.67 to -0.32; P < .05). These scores at week 24 were not statistically significant compared with week 8 although the HADS depression score at week 24 was significantly reduced (P = .03). CONCLUSION Novel smartphone psychotherapy offers a promising way to reduce FCR given the large number of survivors and a limited number of therapists to competently conduct psychotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers and poses a physical and psychological threat to patients. Mindfulness-based interventions are emerging forms of psychotherapy that are effective in improving physical and psychological symptoms, but no review has summarized their effectiveness on anxiety, depression, and fatigue in people with lung cancer. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in reducing anxiety, depression, and fatigue in people with lung cancer. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China Biology Medicine disc, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and China Science and Technology Journal databases from inception to 13 April 2022. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials of people with lung cancer receiving mindfulness-based interventions reporting on the outcomes of anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Two researchers independently reviewed the abstracts and full texts, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias independently by using the Cochrane 'Risk of bias assessment tool'. The meta-analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.4, and the effect size was calculated by the standardized mean difference and its 95% confidence interval. RESULTS The systematic review included 25 studies (2420 participants), whereas the meta-analysis included 18 studies (1731 participants). Mindfulness-based interventions significantly decreased levels of anxiety [standardized mean difference = -1.15, 95% confidence interval (-1.36, -0.94), Z = 10.75, P < 0.001], depression [standardized mean difference = -1.04, 95% confidence interval (-1.60, -0.48), Z = 3.66, P < 0.001], and fatigue [standardized mean difference = -1.29, 95% confidence interval (-1.66, -0.91), Z = 6.79, P < 0.001]. The subgroup analysis indicated that programs lasting less than eight weeks in length with structured intervention components (e.g., mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy) and 45 min of daily home practice implemented in patients with advanced stage lung cancer showed better effects than programs lasting more than eight weeks in length with less structured components and more than 45 min of daily home practice implemented in patients with mixed stage lung cancer. The overall quality of the evidence was low due to the lack of allocation concealment and blinding and the high risk of bias in most studies (80%). CONCLUSIONS Mindfulness-based interventions might be effective in reducing anxiety, depression, and fatigue in people with lung cancer. However, we cannot draw definitive conclusions because the overall quality of the evidence was low. More rigorous studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness and examine which intervention components may be most effective for improved outcomes.

Abstract
Chronic stress results in disturbances of body hormones through the neuroendocrine system. Cancer patients often experience recurrent anxiety and restlessness during disease progression and treatment, which aggravates disease progression and hinders treatment effects. Recent studies have shown that chronic stress-regulated neuroendocrine systems secret hormones to activate many signaling pathways related to tumor development in tumor cells. The activated neuroendocrine system acts not only on tumor cells but also modulates the survival and metabolic changes of surrounding non-cancerous cells. Current clinical evidences also suggest that chronic stress affects the outcome of cancer treatment. However, in clinic, there is lack of effective treatment for chronic stress in cancer patients. In this review, we discuss the main mechanisms by which chronic stress regulates the tumor microenvironment, including functional regulation of tumor cells by stress hormones (stem cell-like properties, metastasis, angiogenesis, DNA damage accumulation, and apoptotic resistance), metabolic reprogramming and immune escape, and peritumor neuromodulation. Based on the current clinical treatment framework for cancer and chronic stress, we also summarize pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches to provide some directions for cancer therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. It is a distressing diagnosis and, as a result, considerable research has examined the psychological sequelae of being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Breast cancer is associated with increased rates of depression and anxiety and reduced quality of life. As a consequence, multiple studies have explored the impact of psychological interventions on the psychological distress experienced after a diagnosis of breast cancer. This review is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of psychological interventions on psychological morbidities and quality of life among women with non-metastatic breast cancer. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Breast Cancer Group Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (WHO ICTRP) and ClinicalTrials.gov up to 16 March 2021. We also scanned the reference lists of relevant articles. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials that assessed the effectiveness of psychological interventions for women with non-metastatic breast cancer. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently appraised, extracted data from eligible trials, and assessed risk of bias and certainty of the evidence using the GRADE approach. Any disagreement was resolved by discussion. Extracted data included information about participants, methods, the intervention and outcomes. MAIN RESULTS We included 60 randomised controlled trials comprising 7998 participants. The most frequent reasons for exclusion were non-randomised trials and the inclusion of women with metastatic disease. The updated review included 7998 randomised women; the original review included 3940 women. A wide range of interventions was evaluated. Most interventions were cognitive- or mindfulness-based, supportive-expressive, and educational. The interventions were mainly delivered face-to-face (56 studies) and in groups (50 studies) rather than individually (10 studies). Most intervention sessions were delivered on a weekly basis with an average duration of 14 hours. Follow-up time ranged from two weeks to 24 months. Pooled standardised mean differences (SMD) from baseline indicated that the intervention may reduce depression (SMD -0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.52 to -0.02; P = 0.04; 27 studies, 3321 participants, I2 = 91%, low-certainty evidence); anxiety (SMD -0.43, 95% CI -0.68 to -0.17; P = 0.0009; 22 studies, 2702 participants, I2 = 89%, low-certainty evidence); mood disturbance in the intervention group (SMD -0.18, 95% CI -0.31 to -0.04; P = 0.009; 13 studies, 2276 participants, I2 = 56%, low-certainty evidence); and stress (SMD -0.34, 95% (CI) -0.55 to -0.12; P = 0.002; 8 studies, 564 participants, I2 = 31%, low-certainty evidence). The intervention is likely to improve quality of life in the intervention group (SMD 0.78, 95% (CI) 0.32 to 1.24; P = 0.0008; 20 studies, 1747 participants, I2 = 95%, low-certainty evidence). Adverse events were not reported in any of the included studies. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Based on the available evidence, psychological intervention may have produced favourable effects on psychological outcomes, in particular depression, anxiety, mood disturbance and stress. There was also an improvement in quality of life in the psychological intervention group compared to control group. Overall, there was substantial variation across the studies in the range of psychological interventions used, control conditions, measures of the same outcome and timing of follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Pathways to Wellness trial tested the efficacy of 2 interventions for younger breast cancer survivors: mindful awareness practices (MAPs) and survivorship education (SE). This planned secondary analysis examines intervention effects on stress, positive psychological outcomes, and inflammation (Clincaltrials.gov NCT03025139). METHODS Women diagnosed with breast cancer at or before age 50 years who had completed treatment and had elevated depressive symptoms were randomly assigned to 6 weeks of MAPs, SE, or wait-list control (WLC). Assessments conducted at pre- and postintervention and at 3- and 6-month follow-up measured general stress perceptions, cancer-related intrusive thoughts and worry, positive affect, meaning and peace in life, altruism and empathy, and markers of inflammation. Analyses compared change in outcomes over time in each intervention group relative to WLC using linear mixed models. RESULTS A total 247 women were randomly assigned to MAPs (n = 85), SE (n = 81), or WLC (n = 81). MAPs statistically significantly decreased intrusive thoughts and worry at postintervention and 3-month follow-up relative to WLC (P < .027) and statistically significantly increased positive affect and meaning and peace at postintervention, with positive affect persisting at 3-month follow-up (P < .027). SE statistically significantly decreased intrusive thoughts at 3-month follow-up and statistically significantly increased positive affect at 6-month follow-up relative to WLC (P < .01). Proinflammatory gene expression increased in WLC relative to MAPs (P = .016) but did not differ from SE. There were no intervention effects on other outcomes. CONCLUSION MAPs had beneficial effects on psychological and immune outcomes in younger breast cancer survivors and is a promising approach for enhancing biobehavioral health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined the effects of Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on depressive symptoms in women with breast cancer and examined the moderating effects of participant characteristics, research methodologies, and features of interventions. METHODS We systematically searched 12 databases through November 2022 without date restrictions using the following search terms: (mindful* or meditation) AND (cancer OR neoplasm) AND (depress*). Studies included were primary studies evaluating MBIs in women with breast cancer who also had depression. Studies were included if they used a control group and were written in English. We used a random-effects model to compute effect sizes (ESs) using Hedges' g, forest plot, and Q and I2 statistics as measure of heterogeneity. We also requested moderator analyses. RESULTS We found 19 studies with 2139 participants (49.4 ± 8.3 years old) that met inclusion criteria for this meta-analysis and systematic review. Overall, women in MBI groups demonstrated significantly lower levels of depression (g = 0.48, 95% CI:0.159, 0.792, P < .001) compared to women in control groups. Regarding moderators, providing MBIs with a home assignment component showed a significantly greater effect on decreasing depressive symptoms (g = 1.75) compared to MBIs without a home assignment component (g = 0.20). When researchers used concealed allocation technique, the interventions demonstrated lower effects on depression than when concealed allocation (g = 0.11vs g = 1.33, P ≤ .001) was not reported. Additionally, when researchers reported high rates of sample attrition, they found a lower effect size on depression (β = -.019, Q = 3.97, P = .046) indicating that attrition moderates the effect. CONCLUSION MBIs are moderately effective interventions to reduce depressive symptoms among women with breast cancer. Clinicians might consider encouraging MBIs as adjunct/alternative treatments for women with breast cancer to manage symptoms of depression. Interventions that incorporat home assignments for practicing mindfulness are likely to have a greater effect on reducing depressive symptoms. Additionally, methods including concealed allocation and attrition rate were moderators of the effects of MBIs on depression in women with breast cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this joint guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations to practicing physicians and other health care providers on integrative approaches to managing pain in patients with cancer. METHODS The Society for Integrative Oncology and ASCO convened an expert panel of integrative oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, palliative oncology, social sciences, mind-body medicine, nursing, and patient advocacy representatives. The literature search included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials published from 1990 through 2021. Outcomes of interest included pain intensity, symptom relief, and adverse events. Expert panel members used this evidence and informal consensus to develop evidence-based guideline recommendations. RESULTS The literature search identified 227 relevant studies to inform the evidence base for this guideline. RECOMMENDATIONS Among adult patients, acupuncture should be recommended for aromatase inhibitor-related joint pain. Acupuncture or reflexology or acupressure may be recommended for general cancer pain or musculoskeletal pain. Hypnosis may be recommended to patients who experience procedural pain. Massage may be recommended to patients experiencing pain during palliative or hospice care. These recommendations are based on an intermediate level of evidence, benefit outweighing risk, and with moderate strength of recommendation. The quality of evidence for other mind-body interventions or natural products for pain is either low or inconclusive. There is insufficient or inconclusive evidence to make recommendations for pediatric patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer diagnosis and treatment can cause fatigue, stress and anxiety which can have a detrimental effect on patients, families and the wider community. Mindfulness-based interventions appear to have positive effects on managing these cancer-related symptoms. OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of mindfulness on cancer related fatigue (CRF) and psychological well-being in female cancer patients. METHODS Five databases (CINHAL, Ovid Medline, Ovid Psych Info, Scopus, and Cochrane), and two trial registers (WHO and Clinicaltrials.gov) were searched for randomised control trials from inception to April 2021 and updated in August 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. The standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to determine the intervention effect. Subgroup analysis was performed for adaptation to types of mindfulness, length of intervention and types of comparator used. RESULTS Twenty-one studies with a total of 2326 participants were identified. Mindfulness significantly improved CRF (SMD -0.81, 95% CI -1.17 to -0.44), depression (SMD-0.74, 95% CI -1.08 to -0.39) and anxiety (SMD -0.92, 95% CI -1.50 to -0.33). No effect was observed for quality of life (SMD 0.32, 95% CI -0.13-0.87) and sleep (SMD -0.65, 95% CI -1.34-0.04). Subgroup analysis revealed that there was little difference in SMD for adapted type of mindfulness (p = 0.42), wait list control compared to active comparator (p = 0.05) or length of intervention (p = 0.29). CONCLUSION Mindfulness appears to be effective in reducing CRF and other cancer related symptoms in women. Adaptations to mindfulness delivery did not have negative impact on results which may aid delivery in the clinical settings.

Abstract
Background Psychological distress and comorbid psychopathology contribute to exacerbation risk in patients with asthma. Thus, interventions designed to reduce stress and improve emotion regulation, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), may augment standard care. Few studies have addressed this question and a paucity of data exists to determine the ability of MBSR to impact clinical outcomes in asthma. Methods This randomized controlled trial investigated effects of MBSR training on asthma control and airway inflammation, in relation to psychological symptoms, in adults with asthma. Participants were randomized to an 8-week MBSR training (n = 35) or wait-list control group (n = 34). Clinically relevant asthma assessments, including Asthma Control Questionnaire and inflammatory biomarkers, were collected at baseline and six approximately-monthly follow-ups. Self-reported mindfulness, distress, depression, and anxiety symptoms were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and study completion. Chronic stress level was determined at baseline only. Results Asthma control improved significantly in individuals randomized to MBSR, relative to wait-list controls (p = .01; effect size d = 0.76), which was maintained at 4mo post-intervention. 32% of MBSR participants achieved a clinically significant improvement, based on the ACQ6 Minimally Important Difference, relative to 12% of wait-list participants. Moreover, MBSR-related improvement in asthma control was associated with a reduction in distress (p = .043) and the intervention was most efficacious for those with the highest baseline depressive symptoms (p = .023). Importantly, MBSR also reduced levels of exhaled nitric oxide, a biomarker of airway inflammation, relative to wait-list controls (p < .05). Conclusion Supporting and extending extant evidence of mind-body relationships in asthma and the benefits of stress reduction for these patients, this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first RCT to demonstrate that training in MBSR improves clinically relevant asthma outcomes. MBSR may thus be a valuable addition to optimal asthma management, particularly for those with comorbid psychopathology. Clinical trial registration NCT02157766.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has become an alternative intervention for cancer patients, but its impact on depression and quality of life (QOL) of breast cancer patients remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of MBSR vs. standard or usual care to relieve psychological stress in patients with breast cancer. METHODS According to the PICOS principles, databases [PubMed, Cochrane Database, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Scientific Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang Database] were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the evaluation of MBSR vs. standard or usual care for patients with breast cancer, the outcome variables included depression, stress, anxiety, fatigue, sleep and QOL. Review Manager 5.4 was used to evaluate the effects of the results among selected articles. Forest plots and funnel plots were also performed. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. RESULTS The final analysis included 14 studies with a total of 2,224 patients (1,138 in the MBSR group and 1,086 in the control group). The overall results of risk of bias assessment showed that the reporting bias among articles was high, and other bias was relatively moderate. Funnel plots and Egger's tests showed that there was no significant publication bias. Compared with standard or usual care, MBSR effectively relieved the psychological stress [mean difference (MD), -1.72; 95% confidence interval (CI): (-2.53, -0.92); P<0.0001] and anxiety [standardized mean difference (SMD), -1.36; 95% CI: (-2.13, -0.60); P=0.0005] of breast cancer patients, and improved depression [SMD, -0.62; 95% CI: (-1.20, -0.03); P=0.04] and sleep status [MD, -0.42; 95% CI: (-0.73, -0.10), P=0.009]. However, it had no significant effect on fatigue [SMD, -0.97; 95% CI: (-2.24, 0.31); P=0.14] or QOL [MD, 1.95; 95% CI: (-3.15, 7.05); P=0.45]. CONCLUSIONS MBSR was better than standard or usual care for relieving psychological stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep in patients with breast cancer. Considering the limitations of this article, such as high risk of bias and high heterogeneity of included studies, the interpretation of this conclusion should be cautious.

Abstract
Chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to aggravates tumorigenesis and development. Although the importance of SNS and HPA in maintaining homeostasis has already attracted much attention, there is still a lot remained unknown about the molecular mechanisms by which chronic stress influence the occurrence and development of tumor. While some researches have already concluded the mechanisms underlying the effect of chronic stress on tumor, complicated processes of tumor progression resulted in effects of chronic stress on various stages of tumor remains elusive. In this reviews we concluded recent research progresses of chronic stress and its effects on premalignancy, tumorigenesis and tumor development, we comprehensively summarized the molecular mechanisms in between. And we highlight the available treatments and potential therapies for stressed patients with tumor.
