Abstract
The fungus Amanita muscaria is universally recognizable for its iconic appearance; it is also widely regarded as poisonous, inedible, and even deadly. In spite of that, there have been documented cases of use of A. muscaria-containing preparations against various diseases, including cancer, to no apparent ill effect. The search for compounds that can be used to treat cancer among various plants and fungi has been intensifying in recent years. In light of this, we describe an HPLC HILIC analytical method for the evaluation of the content of the anticancer compound ergosterol (ERG) and the neuroactive alkaloids ibotenic acid (IBO) and muscimol (MUS) that contribute significantly to the unpleasant physiological syndrome associated with A. muscaria consumption. A 'homemade' A. muscaria tincture made using 80-proof rye vodka as the solvent, an A. muscaria extract made with a standardized water-ethanol solution as the solvent, and fractions obtained from the second extract via liquid-liquid extraction with nonpolar solvents were analyzed. The study also presents the results of capillary zone electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection and UHPLC-MS/MS analyses of the IBO and MUS content of the two native A. muscaria extracts and an evaluation of the standardized extract's cytotoxic effect against a small panel of lung cell cultures in vitro. Our results show that the standardized extract has a significant cytotoxic effect and does not contain the compounds of interest in any significant quantity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nowadays, medicines derived from natural sources have drawn much attention as potential therapeutic agents in the suppression and treatment of cancer because of their low toxicity and fewer side effects. OBJECTIVE The present review aims to assess the currently available knowledge on the ethnomedicinal uses and pharmacological activities of bioactive compounds obtained from medicinal mushrooms towards cancer treatment. METHODS A literature search has been conducted for the collection of research papers from universally accepted scientific databases. These research papers and published book chapters were scrutinized to retrieve information on ethnomedicinal uses of mushrooms, different factors involved in cancer cell proliferation, clinical and in silico pharmaceutical studies made for possible treatments of cancer using mushroom derived compounds. Overall, 241 articles were retrieved and reviewed from the year 1970 to 2020, out of which 98 relevant articles were finally considered for the preparation of this review. RESULTS This review presents an update on the natural bioactive substances derived from medicinal mushrooms and their role in inhibiting the factors responsible for cancer cell proliferation. Along with it, the present review also provides information on the ethnomedicinal uses, solvents used for extraction of anti-cancer metabolites, clinical trials, and in silico studies that were undertaken towards anticancer drug development from medicinal mushrooms. CONCLUSION The present review provides extensive knowledge on various anti-cancer substances obtained from medicinal mushrooms, their biological actions, and in silico drug designing approaches, which could form a basis for the development of natural anti-cancer therapeutics.

Abstract
Glucans are the most abundant natural polysaccharides across the living kingdom with tremendous biological activities. Now a days, α-D-glucans are gaining importance as a prebiotics, nutraceuticals, immunostimulants, antiproliferative agents and biodegradable polymers in pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. A wide variety of bioresources including bacteria, fungi, lichens, algae, plants and animals produce α-D-glucans either as an exopolysaccharide (EPS) or a cell wall component or an energy storage polymer. The α-D-glucans exhibit great structural and functional diversity as the type of linkage and percentage of branching dictate the functional properties of glucans. Among the different linkages, bioactivities are greatly confined to the α-D-(1 → 3) linkages whereas starch and other polymers consisting of α-D-(1 → 4) (1 → 6) linkages are specific for food and pharmaceutical applications. However, the bioactivities of the α-D-(1 → 3) glucans in native form is limited mainly due to their hydrophobic nature. Hence several derivatization techniques have been developed to improve the bioavailability as well as bioactive features such as antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory and antitumor properties. Though, several reports have presented about α-D-glucans, still there is an ambiguity in terms of their structure among different natural sources and moreover no comprehensive information was available on their derivatization techniques and application potential. Therefore, the present review summarizes distinct description on diverse sources, type of linkages, derivatization techniques as well as the application potential of the native and modified α-D-glucans.

Abstract
Mushrooms with enhanced medicinal properties focus on finding such compounds that could modulate the human body's immune systems. Mushrooms have antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiviral, hepatoprotective, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties due to the presence of various bioactive components. β-glucans are the major constituent of the mushroom cell wall and play a significant role in their biological activity. This review described the techniques used in the extraction of the active ingredients from the mushroom. We highlighted the structure of the bioactive polysaccharides present in the mushrooms. Therapeutic applications of different mushrooms were also described. It is interesting to note that mushrooms have the potential sources of many bioactive products that can regulate immunity. Thus, the development of functional medicinal food based on the mushroom is vital for human welfare.

Abstract
Mushrooms are renewable natural gift for humankind, furnished with unique taste, flavor and medicinal properties. For the last few decades study of mushroom polysaccharides has become a matter of great interest to the researchers for their immunomodulating, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and antitumor properties. Molecular mass, branching configuration, conformation of polysaccharides and chemical modification are the major factors influencing their biological activities. The mechanism of action of mushroom polysaccharides is to stimulate T-cells, B-cells, natural killer cells, and macrophage dependent immune responses via binding to receptors like the toll-like receptor-2, dectin-1. The present review offers summarized and significant information about the structural and biological properties of mushroom polysaccharides, and their potential for development of therapeutic materials.

Abstract
Hydrophobin proteins were extracted from Agrocybe cylindracea mycelia, the culture media (potato dextrose broth, PDB), and fruiting bodies. The putative hydrophobins obtained showed approximate sizes ranging from 8.0 to 25.0 kDa, dependent on their source. Multiple hydrophobin protein bands were detected in fruiting bodies. The hydrophobin yielded from aerial mycelia, or fruiting bodies, was approximately 6 mg/g dried weight. The crude extracts were examined for their properties in regards to surface modification, emulsification, and surface activity. Coating of hydrophobic Teflon sheet with crude extract made the surface significantly hydrophilic, whereas exposure of glass surfaces to extracts resulted in enhanced hydrophobicity. Crude extracts from culture media of A. cylindracea displayed emulsifying activity when mixed with hexane and could significantly reduce the surface tension of 60% ethanol and deionised water. The putative hydrophobin protein band from culture media (9.6 kDa), as analysed using LC-MS/MS, contained an amino acid fragment structurally similar to class I hydrophobin proteins from Basidiomycetes.

Abstract
Mushroom nutriceutical components have lately attracted interest for developing immunonutritional support. However, there is relatively little information pertaining to the use of mushroom preparations for modulating the metabolic and immunological disorders associated to malnutrition. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of oral administration of an aqueous extract (CW-P) from Pleurotus ostreatus on the recovery of biochemical and immunological functions of malnourished mice. 8-week old female BALB/c mice were starved for 3days and then refed with commercial diet supplemented with or without CW-P (100mg/kg) for 8days. Regardless of the diet used during refeeding, animal body weights and serum protein concentrations did not differ between groups. Oral treatment with CW-P normalized haemoglobin levels, liver arginase and gut mucosal weight. CW-P increased total liver proteins and also DNA and protein contents in gut mucosa. Pleurotus extract provided benefits in terms of macrophages activation as well as in haemopoiesis, as judged by the recovery of bone marrow cells and leukocyte counts. Moreover, CW-P stimulated humoral immunity (T-dependent and T non-dependent antibodies responses) compared to non-supplemented mice. CW-P extract from the oyster mushroom can be used to develop specific food or nutritional supplement formulations with potential clinical applications in the immunotherapy.

Abstract
Basidiomycete mushrooms represent a valuable source of biologically active compounds with anticancer properties. This feature is primarily attributed to polysaccharides and their derivatives. The anticancer potential of polysaccharides is linked to their origin, composition and chemical structure, solubility and method of isolation. Moreover, their activity can be significantly increased by chemical modifications. Anticancer effects of polysaccharides can be expressed indirectly (immunostimulation) or directly (cell proliferation inhibition and/or apoptosis induction). Among the wide range of polysaccharides with documented anticancer properties, lentinan, polysaccharide-K (PSK) and schizophyllan deserve special attention. These polysaccharides for many years have been successfully applied in cancer treatment and their mechanism of action is the best known.

Abstract
A laccase, with HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitory activity (IC(50)=12.7 μM) and antiproliferative activity against HepG2 cells (IC(50)=5.6 μM) and MCF7 cells (IC(50)=6.5 μM), was purified from fresh fruiting bodies of the edible white common Agrocybe cylindracea mushroom. The laccase, which had a novel N-terminal sequence, displayed a molecular mass of 58 kDa within the range reported for most other mushroom laccases. The purification protocol entailed ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, SP-Sepharose, and Q-Sepharose and gel filtration on Superdex 75. The laccase was adsorbed on DEAE-cellulose and Q-Sepharose, but unadsorbed on SP-Sepharose. Its optimum pH was pH 3-4 and its optimum temperature was 50°C. The activity of the isolated laccase differed from one substrate to another. The ranking was ABTS>N,N-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine>hydroquinone>catechol>2-methylcatechol>pyrogallol.

Abstract
CONTEXT Although new methods for the induction of malnutrition disorders in laboratory animals have been developed, the bulk of the models described in the literature are essentially based on dietary restriction/starvation principle. In this context, little data are available about the metabolic and the immune system parameters of Balb/c mice under starvation/refeeding. OBJECTIVE This study examined the effects of starvation and refeeding on the biochemical and immunological status of undernourished Balb/c mice. METHODS Female Balb/c mice, weighing 20 g, were starved for 3 days and then refed with commercial pelleted diet for 8 days. The variables considered were as follows: body weight; serum protein and amino acid concentrations; liver protein content, and cholinesterase and arginase activities; jejunal protein and DNA contents as well as oligosaccharidase levels; hematological parameters (bone marrow and peripheral blood cellularity); peritoneal macrophage activation; and humoral and cell-mediated immune functions. RESULTS Profound alterations in both biochemical and immunological conditions appeared after the starvation period. Refeeding resulted in the normalization of serum albumin levels, the intestinal DNA content and the gut-mucosal associated enzymatic activities, the blood lymphocyte counts, and the number of peritoneal macrophages. The markers of liver metabolic function (cholinesterase and arginase activities), and those of bone marrow hemopoiesis and the adaptive immune response (T-dependent antibody titres and delayed-type hypersensitivity response) remained altered after refeeding compared with control mice. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that fasted mice can be used as an animal model of acute starvation that might prove useful in evaluating the effectiveness of nutritional and immunopharmacological interventions.

Abstract
Targeted delivery of anticancer drugs is one of the most actively pursued goals in anticancer chemotherapy. Serum proteins such as transferrin, albumin, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) offer promise for the selective delivery of antineoplastic agents due to their accumulation in tumor tissue. Uptake of these proteins in solid tumors is mediated by a number of factors, including an increased metabolic activity of tumors, an enhanced vascular permeability of tumor blood vessels for circulating macromolecules, and a lack of a functional lymphatic drainage system in tumor tissue. At the tumor site, transferrin, low-density lipoprotein, and albumin are taken up by the tumor cell through receptor-mediated and fluid phase endocytosis, respectively. Serum protein conjugates can be designed to release the bound antitumor drug after cellular uptake of the drug conjugate. This review covers the diagnostic evidence for tumor accumulation of serum proteins and the design, development, and biological evaluation of drug conjugates with transferrin, albumin, and low-density lipoprotein.

Abstract
This study evaluated the optimal vegetative growth conditions and molecular phylogenetic relationships of eleven strains of Agrocybe cylindracea collected from different ecological regions of Korea, China and Taiwan. The optimal temperature and pH for mycelial growth were observed at 25℃ and 6. Potato dextrose agar and Hennerberg were the favorable media for vegetative growth, whereas glucose tryptone was unfavorable. Dextrin, maltose, and fructose were the most effective carbon sources. The most suitable nitrogen sources were arginine and glycine, whereas methionine, alanine, histidine, and urea were least effective for the mycelial propagation of A. cylindracea. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA were amplified using PCR. The sequence of ITS2 was more variable than that of ITS1, while the 5.8S sequences were identical. The reciprocal homologies of the ITS sequences ranged from 98 to 100%. The strains were also analyzed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using 20 arbitrary primers. Fifteen primers efficiently amplified the genomic DNA. The average number of polymorphic bands observed per primer was 3.8. The numbers of amplified bands varied based on the primers and strains, with polymorphic fragments ranging from 0.1 to 2.9 kb. The results of RAPD analysis were similar to the ITS region sequences. The results revealed that RAPD and ITS techniques were well suited for detecting the genetic diversity of all A. cylindracea strains tested.

Abstract
Mushroom polysaccharides are potent substances that exhibit antitumor and immunomodulatory properties. Studies comparing the chemical composition and antitumor-related activities of polysaccharides released by fungal strains under different growth conditions are not available. Thus, the present study compared polysaccharides extracts produced by Pleurotus pulmonarius from mycelium grown in liquid culture (ME) or fruiting bodies (FBE). Polysaccharides of both ME and FBE had a relatively high molecular mass. NMR spectroscopy indicated that ME glucan is an alpha-glucan whereas FBE glucan is a mixture of both alpha- and beta-glucans. Glucose and galactose where the most prominent monosaccharide in both glucans. Treatment of several colon cancer cell lines expressing varying amounts of galectin-3 with the two fungal glucans inhibited their viability and significantly reduced their ability to adhere to the key component of the extracellular matrix, fibronectin, and to a human umbilical vein endothelial cell monolayer, in a time- and dose-dependent manner mainly in those cell lines expressing high amounts of galectin-3. We conclude that ME and FBE glucans may exert a direct antiproliferative effect on cancer cells expressing high galectin-3 concentrations and concomitantly downregulate tumor cell adherence, the latter being directly related to cancer progression and metastasis.

Abstract
Agrocybe cylindracea, an edible mushroom belonging to Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales, is widely used as invaluable medicinal material in the oriental countries. This study was initiated to find the genes expressed during the fruiting body formation of A. cylindracea. The cDNAs expressed differentially during fruiting body morphogenesis of A. cylindracea were isolated through subtractive hybridization between vegetative mycelia and fruiting bodies. The cDNAs expressed in the fruiting body morphogenesis of A. cylindracea were cloned and twenty genes were identified. Eleven were homologous to genes of known functions, three were homologous to genes in other organism without any function known. Six were completely novel genes specific to A. cylindracea so far examined. Some genes with known functions were a pleurotolysin, a self-assembling poreforming cytolysins; Aa-Pri1 and Pir2p, specifically induced genes during fruiting initiation of other mushroom, Agrocybe aegerita; an amino acid permease; a cytochrome P450; a MADS-box gene; a peptidylprolyl isomerase; and a serine proteinase. For other clones, no clear function was annotated so far. We believe the first report of the differentially expressed genes in fruiting process of A. cylindracea will be great helps for further research.

Abstract
Studies have shown that certain foods contain compounds with antigenotoxic activities. Here, we ask if dried powders and/or extracts from three edible mushrooms, Agrocybe cylindracea, Lentinula edodes and Pleurotus ostreatus, have a mitigating effect on genotoxicity. We used two in vivo assays: the Drosophila DNA repair test and the Drosophila wing spot test (also known as SMART) which measures somatic mutation and recombination. Eight carcinogens were tested with the mushroom powders: 2-AAF, aflatoxin B1, DMBA, IQ, MeIQx, MNU NDMA, and 4NQO. We found that A. cylindracea and P. ostreatus powders can suppress DNA damage induced by each of the mutagens we tested. In contrast, L. edodes has an inhibitory effect on DNA damage induced by only a sub-set of mutagens, namely aflatoxin B1, NDMA, MNU and 4NQO. In addition, A. cylindracea extracts were able to suppress somatic cell mutation induced by aflatoxin B1, MMC, MNU, NDMA, NMOR and 4NQO. These results suggest that Agrocybe genus mushrooms contain factors with antigenotoxic activity, including anti-recombinogenic activity. Furthermore, the antigenotoxic activity of A. cylindracea powder can be extracted in water but not in ethyl acetate or methanol, and is sensitive to heat treatment. The data suggest that there is a novel antigenotoxic factor(s) in A. cylindracea, possibly in the form of a peptide or protein.

Abstract
The optimization of submerged culture conditions and nutritional requirements was studied for the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) from Agrocybe cylindracea ASI-9002 using the statistically based experimental design in a shake flask culture. Both maximum mycelial biomass and EPS were observed at 25 degrees C. The optimal initial pH for the production of mycelial biomass and EPS were found to be pH 4.0 and pH 6.0, respectively. Subsequently, optimum concentration of each medium component was determined using the orthogonal matrix method. The optimal combination of the media constituents for mycelial growth was as follows: maltose 80 g/l, Martone A-1 6 g/l, MgSO4 x 7H2O 1.4 g/l, and CaCl2 1.1 g/l; for EPS production: maltose 60 g/l, Martone A-1 6 g/l, MgSO4 x 7H2O 0.9 g/l, and CaCl2 1.1 g/l. Under the optimal culture condition, the maximum EPS concentration achieved in a 5-l stirred-tank bioreactor indicated 3.0 g/l, which is about three times higher than that at the basal medium.

Abstract
Crude polysaccharide extracts were obtained from aqueous extracts of the microalgae Chlorella stigmatophora and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The crude extracts were fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose columns. The molecular weights of the polysaccharides in each fraction were estimated by gel filtration on Sephacryl columns. The crude polysaccharide extracts of both microalgae showed anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan-induced paw edema test. In assays of effects on the delayed hyper-sensitivity response, and on phagocytic activity assayed in vivo and in vitro, the C. stigmatophora extract showed immunosuppressant effects, while the P. tricornutum extract showed immunostimulatory effects.

Abstract
A peptide, with a molecular mass of 9.5kDa and demonstrating an N-terminal sequence similar to ubiquitin, was isolated from fruiting bodies of the mushroom Agrocybe cylindracea. The peptide was isolated with a purification protocol involving ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, affinity chromatography on Affi-gel blue gel, FPLC-ion exchange chromatography on Mono S and FPLC-gel filtration on Superdex 75. The peptide was unadsorbed on DEAE-cellulose and adsorbed on Affi-gel blue gel and Mono S. It showed antiproliferative activity on leukemia cell line (M1) and hepatoma cell line (HepG2), and enhanced nitric oxide production in murine peritoneal macrophages with a potency comparable to that of lipopolysaccharide. A pH of 6.0 was required for optimal RNase activity. Its RNase activity was stable over the temperature range of 0-60 degrees C. It exerted ribonucleolytic activity preferentially on polyC, much lower activity on polyU, and negligible activity on polyA and polyG.

Abstract
Seven water-insoluble (1 --> 3)-beta-D-glucan fractions TM8-1 to TM8-7 with weight-average molecular mass M(w) ranged from 2.22 to 77.4 x 10(4) obtained from the sclerotia of Pleurotus tuber-regium were carboxymethylated to produce the water-soluble fractions CTM8-1 to CTM8-7 with M(w) ranged from 3.87 to 87.8 x 10(4). The degree of substitution (DS) of CTM8 fractions was analyzed by ir and elemental analysis (EA) to be 0.3-0.68. The M(w) and the intrinsic viscosity [eta] of the CTM8 fractions were measured by size-exclusion chromatography combined with multiangle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS), MALLS, and viscometry in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at 37 degrees C. The dependencies of [eta] and radius of gyration <s(2)>(z) (1/2) on M(w) for the CTM8 samples were found to be [eta] = (8.82 +/- 0.03) x 10(-3) M(w)(0.78 +/- 0.04) (cm(3) g(-1)) and <s(2)>(z) (1/2) = (3.09 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3) M(w)(0.75 +/- 0.06) (nm) in the M(w) range from 3.87 x 10(4) to 53.2 x 10(4). Based on current theories for wormlike chain model, the conformational parameters of the CTM8 were obtained to be 790 (nm(-1)) for M(L), 9.6 (nm) for q, which were higher than those of the native TM8 fractions, suggesting a more extended flexible chain of CTM8 in PBS. On the whole, the CTM8 fractions showed higher antitumor activity than their corresponding TM8 fractions. In view of data from molecular parameters and bioactivity, the antitumor activity of the CTM8 fractions may be correlated to its water solubility and relatively extended chain.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the development of MALDI sample preparation protocols for the analysis of a bioactive beta-(1 --> 3) polysaccharide, i.e. Curdlan. The crude Curdlan sample was first separated into a low molecular weight water-soluble portion and a high molecular weight water-insoluble portion. The water-soluble portion was analyzed using a standard MALDI sample preparation method developed for dextran analysis. Two low-mass (<4000 Da) polysaccharide distributions differing by 16 Da were observed. For the analysis of the water-insoluble portion, several sample preparation protocols were evaluated using GPC-fractionated samples. A sample preparation method based on the deposition of the analyte solution with a mixture of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and 3-aminoquinoline (3AQ) matrices in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at elevated temperature of 70 degrees C was found to reliably produce good MALDI spectra. MALDI analysis of the water-insoluble Curdlan portion gave number-average (Mn) and weight-average (Mw) molecular weights and polydispersity of 8000 Da, 8700 Da, and 1.10, respectively.

Abstract
Recently, there has been increase of general interest in fungi because of the possible medical applications of their polysaccharide constituents called glucans, some of which are reported to have immunomodulatory properties. Since an extraction method can change the chemical composition of a substance, especially a delicate one such as fungal thallus, it is necessary and useful to know more about the studied matter in advance in order to choose the chemical procedure properly. We demonstrated the usefulness of vibrational spectroscopy in identifying different glucan types in various parts of intact fruiting bodies of Asco- and Basidiomycetes. Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used for obtaining vibrational spectra of spores and fruiting bodies of more than 70 species belonging to 37 different genera of wild growing mushrooms. The list of the bands in 750-950 cm(-1) interval, assigned to alpha- and beta-glucans, is provided for all species studied. Vibrational spectra in the interval 1000-1200 cm(-1) could serve as an indicator of mushroom genus, although particular species cannot be identified spectroscopically. Great similarities in spectra of spores of the same genus, but different species, e.g. Tricholoma album and Trichloma sulphureum, were observed. On the other hand, spectra of cap, stalk and spores of the same mushroom show great differences, indicating variety in the chemical composition of different parts of the same fruiting body.

Abstract
The immunopotentiating activity of nigerooligosaccharides (NOS), a mixture of nigerose, nigerosyl glucose and nigerosyl maltose, was studied in vitro and in vivo in mice. Mitogen-induced proliferation of splenocytes from normal mice was augmented in a dose-dependent manner by nigerose of NOS. NOS enhanced interleukin 12 (IL-12) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production by normal splenocytes in the presence of the potent IL-12 inducer, heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137, in vitro. Consistent with the in vitro finding, L. plantarum L-137-induced IL-12 production and IL-2-induced IFN-gamma production were augmented in mice fed with a 14.6% NOS diet for 2 weeks compared with mice fed with a control diet. Notably, mice fed with the NOS diet showed significantly longer survival time than the control mice after the induction of an endogenous infection by administering 5-fluorouracil in a lethal dose. Taken together, these results suggest that NOS may exert immunopotentiating activity through the activation of an IL-12-dependent T helper 1-like immune response.

Abstract
Newly synthesized (1-->3)-beta-D-glucans with reducing glucose side chains (6-O-glucopyranosylated curdlan and 3-O-glucopyranosylated curdlan, with glucose linked directly (except for anomeric carbon) had antitumor activity against mice sarcoma 180 in mice. The two glucans potentiated the reticuloendotheliai system and activated macrophages (increased their glucose consumption). The activity inducing tumor regressing factor of the glucan derivatives was stronger than a linear (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan (curdlan).

Abstract
In human hepatoma HepG2 cell line curdlan sulphate enhances basal and interleukin-6-stimulated fibrinogen and antichymotrypsin (ACT) synthesis, slightly increases basal ceruloplasmin production and exerts only minor effects on alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor and transferrin. Curdlan sulphate may, at least in part, affect protein synthesis at a pretranslational level, as the expression of ACT mRNA was found to be increased, whereas intracellular enzyme, manganese superoxide dismutase mRNA level was decreased in the cell culture treated with curdlan sulphate. Gel mobility shift analysis revealed that curdlan sulphate increases the DNA binding activity of NF-kappaB and C/EBP, suggesting that these transcription factors may participate in the regulatory effects of curdlan sulphate in HepG2 cells.
