Abstract
Enteric virus infection is a major public health issue worldwide. Enteric viruses have become epidemic infectious diseases in several countries. Enteric viruses primarily infect the gastrointestinal tract and complete their life cycle in intestinal epithelial cells. These viruses are transmitted via the fecal-oral route through contaminated food, water, or person to person and cause similar common symptoms, including vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Diarrheal disease is the third leading cause of death in children under five years of age, accounting for approximately 1.7 billion cases and 443,832 deaths annually in this age group. Additionally, some enteric viruses can invade other tissues, leading to severe conditions and even death. The pathogenic mechanisms of enteric viruses are also unclear. In this review, we organized the research on trending enteric virus infections, including rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, Enterovirus-A71, Coxsackievirus A6, and Echovirus 11. Furthermore, we discuss the gastrointestinal effects and pathogenic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 in intestinal epithelial cells, given the gastrointestinal symptoms observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a literature review on their pathogenic mechanisms, which serves as a guide for formulating future treatment strategies for enteric virus infections.

Abstract
AbstractThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes a systemic illness that can result in various manifestations. In addition to severe acute respiratory syndrome, patients often exhibit complications unrelated to the respiratory system. Potential liver damage can occur in 14.8 to 53.0% of the affected patients. Liver impairment in COVID-19 can also occur because of the use of polypharmacy during disease management. It is essential to be aware of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, especially when considering the off-label usage of medications in both preventative and therapeutic regimens used on a wide scale. This review aims to give pertinent information regarding drugs utilized thus far in COVID-19 patients and their potential toxicity to the liver. We also present a suggested management approach to DILI in COVID-19 patients and lessons learned from the pharmacological management of this pandemic.

Abstract
Background: The trophoblast is a significant source of vitamin D synthesis during pregnancy, with the literature suggesting its role in fetal growth. We aim to underline a possible mechanism that would explain negative fetal outcomes in COVID-19-positive mothers by examining the relationship between altered placental structure and function and throphoblast cells' vitamin D receptor levels. Methods: The study included 170 placental samples collected from women who gave birth at term without complications, divided into three groups: COVID-19-positive and unvaccinated, COVID-19-negative and vaccinated, and COVID-19-negative and unvaccinated, with exclusion criteria for any other medical complications. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to detect vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression, and immediate fetal outcomes (weight and Apgar score) were assessed. Results: We found lower gestational age at birth, lower birth weight, and reduced placental VDR (vitamin D receptor) levels in COVID-19-positive women compared to COVID-19-vaccinated and COVID-19-negative women. Conclusions: The presence of the vitamin D receptor in the placenta is related to fetal and placental growth. Its deficiency may contribute to negative fetal outcomes in COVID-19-positive cases.

Abstract
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to multiple waves of infections globally. As the virus continues to evolve, new variants have emerged, some with concerning changes in transmissibility and virulence. Among these variants, the "FLiRT Variants" have recently gained attention due to their potential to alter the dynamics of transmission and disease severity. According to the Infectious Disease Society of America, the nickname 'FLiRT' is based on the technical names for their mutations. The FLiRT variants, particularly KP.2, seem to exhibit heightened transmissibility in comparison to earlier Omicron sub-variants. Additionally, they demonstrate a capacity to evade immunity conferred by prior infection and vaccines, although the full extent of this evasion is still being investigated. In this article, we review the characteristics of the FLiRT variants, including their genetic mutations, epidemiological features, potential impact on public health measures, and implications for vaccine efficacy. We also discuss strategies for surveillance, prevention, and mitigation efforts to control the spread of this variant and mitigate its impact on global health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection on postoperative recovery of patients who underwent liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains uncertain given the lack of sufficient evidence. AIM To investigate the impact of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection on postoperative recovery of patients who underwent liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS Patients who were pathologically diagnosed with HCC and underwent elective partial hepatectomy in Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital between January 2022 and April 2023 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. The patients were divided into two groups based on their history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Rehabilitation parameters, including postoperative liver function, incidence of complications, and hospitalization expenses, were compared between the two groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce confounding bias. RESULTS We included 172 patients (58 with and 114 without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection) who underwent liver resection for HCC. No significant differences in the rehabilitation parameters were observed between the two groups. After PSM, 58 patients were selected from each group to form the new comparative groups. Similar results were obtained within the population after PSM. CONCLUSION Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection does not appear to affect postoperative rehabilitation, including liver function, postoperative complications, or hospitalization expenses among patients with HCC after elective partial hepatectomy.

Abstract
Cytokines like interleukins (ILs) play important roles in inflammation and innate immune. Yang and Zhang carried out an interesting study related to ILs and hepatic diseases. They described the role of ILs in the pathogenesis and resolution of hepatic disorders. The authors summarized alcohol-related liver disease and virus-induced hepatitis, as far as clinical studies a fortiori carried out on IL-mediated treatments pertaining to these dysfunctions. This editorial contributes to the review by Yang and Zhang titled, "Interleukins in liver disease treatment", and focuses on therapies mediated by ILs in comorbid liver diseases. The documentary search was conducted on recent pertinent literature, primarily using the Google Scholar and PubMed databases.

Abstract
Background/purpose It is known that COVID-19 patients show many clinical oral symptoms due to the immunological mechanisms triggered by the virus. Aim of this study is to analyze the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2, and to evaluate the oral health status of hospitalized patients. Materials and methods 160 patients with COVID-19 confirmed by SARS-CoV-2-specific RT-PCR testing and 160 healthy volunteers (HI) with similar age, gender and systemic status were included to compare the bio-chemical and oral manifestations. Oropharyngeal swab specimens were collected to evaluate the salivary interleukins (IL-1, IL-6, IL-10) and immunoglobulins (sIgA, sIgG, sIgM). Oral findings (DMFT, plaque index, salivary flow rate), socio-demographic information and systemic conditions were also recorded. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U and Spearman's ratio tests were applied to determine the possible correlations between the factors (P = 0.05). Results The mean DMFT scores of COVID-19 patients (12.71 ± 7.3) were significantly higher than the HI (7.39 ± 2.8), whereas cases of total or partial edentulism were more common among COVID-19 patients (P < 0.05). While plaque index scores were similar for both groups (P > 0.05), salivary parameters were found statistically different (P < 0.05). Severe and moderate cases showed higher proinflammatory interleukin levels (IL-1 = 68.74 pg/ml, IL-6 = 53.31 pg/ml) amongst all (P < 0.05). While secretory immunoglobulins were almost depleted at baseline, (sIgA = 0.11 mg/ml, sIgG = 0.21 mg/ml, sIgM = 0.08 mg/ml) they reached to threshold levels after 4 weeks. Conclusion Higher proinflammatory interleukin levels indicated that traces of ongoing "Cytokine Storm" in COVID-19 patients which can also be observed in oral environment. Poor oral hygiene and malnutrition due to edentulism can pave the way for having a severe COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
Within-host infection dynamics of Omicron dramatically differs from previous variants of SARS-CoV-2. However, little is still known about which parameters of virus-cell interplay contribute to the observed attenuated replication and pathogenicity of Omicron. Mathematical models, often expressed as systems of differential equations, are frequently employed to study the infection dynamics of various viruses. Adopting such models for results of in vitro experiments can be beneficial in a number of aspects, such as model simplification (e.g., the absence of adaptive immune response and innate immunity cells), better measurement accuracy, and the possibility to measure additional data types in comparison with in vivo case. In this study, we consider a refinement of our previously developed and validated model based on a system of integro-differential equations. We fit the model to the experimental data of Omicron and Delta infections in Caco-2 (human intestinal epithelium model) and Calu-3 (lung epithelium model) cell lines. The data include known information on initial conditions, infectious virus titers, and intracellular viral RNA measurements at several time points post-infection. The model accurately explains the experimental data for both variants in both cell lines using only three variant- and cell-line-specific parameters. Namely, the cell entry rate is significantly lower for Omicron, and Omicron triggers a stronger cytokine production rate (i.e., innate immune response) in infected cells, ultimately making uninfected cells resistant to the virus. Notably, differences in only a single parameter (e.g., cell entry rate) are insufficient to obtain a reliable model fit for the experimental data.

Abstract
First described in December 2019 in Wuhan (China), COVID-19 disease rapidly spread worldwide, constituting the biggest pandemic in the last 100 years. Even if SARS-CoV-2, the agent responsible for COVID-19, is mainly associated with pulmonary injury, evidence is growing that this virus can affect many organs, including the heart and vascular endothelial cells, and cause haemostasis, CNS, and kidney and gastrointestinal tract abnormalities that can impact in the disease course and prognosis. In fact, COVID-19 may affect almost all the organs. Hence, SARS-CoV-2 is essentially a systemic infection that can present a large number of clinical manifestations, and it is variable in distribution and severity, which means it is potentially life-threatening. The goal of this comprehensive review paper in the series is to give an overview of non-pulmonary involvement in COVID-19, with a special focus on underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical presentation.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), later renamed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was first identified in Wuhan, China, in early December 2019. Initially, the China office of the World Health Organization was informed of numerous cases of pneumonia of unidentified etiology in Wuhan, Hubei Province at the end of 2019. This would subsequently result in a global pandemic with millions of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and millions of deaths reported to the WHO. We have analyzed most of the data published since the beginning of the pandemic to compile this comprehensive review of SARS-CoV-2. We looked at the core ideas, such as the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnostics, histopathologic findings, consequences, therapies, and vaccines. We have also included the long-term effects and myths associated with some therapeutics of COVID-19. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the SARS-CoV-2 virology, vaccines, medicines, and significant variants identified during the course of the pandemic. Our review article is intended to provide medical practitioners with a better understanding of the fundamental sciences, clinical treatment, and prevention of COVID-19. As of May 2023, this paper contains the most recent data made accessible.

Abstract
Background COVID-19-related pulmonary complications have been explored extensively in the recent past. There is also a significant amount of literature on the neurological manifestations of COVID-19. However, there exists an unmet need to assess the impact of COVID-19 on patients with cerebrovascular diseases and its role in affecting mortality in such patients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 401,318 hospitalized patients with cerebrovascular diseases using the discharge data from the National Inpatient Sample 2020 to assess the association of COVID-19 with multiple clinical conditions, along with additional factors, such as length of stay in the hospital, total charges incurred, region and type of hospital, and primary insurance/payer in the United States of America. We used a multivariable logistic regression model to predict factors relating to mortality in such patients. Results The mortality during hospitalization in patients with cerebrovascular disease who were also diagnosed with COVID-19 was significantly higher than the patients without COVID-19 (22.50% vs 5.44%, p-value <0.0001). COVID-19 independently increased the odds of death significantly in patients with cerebrovascular diseases (adjusted OR = 4.81, p-value <0.0001). Other statistically and clinically significant factors that contributed to increased odds of mortality in such patients were comorbidities such as moderate/severe liver disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and complications such as the development of a saddle pulmonary embolus. Conclusion COVID-19 was associated with higher mortality in patients with cerebrovascular diseases. It also significantly increased the duration of hospital stay and odds of mortality in such patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected all countries' health systems and people's lifestyles. In this study, we aimed to investigate its effects in a university hospital neurosurgery clinic. METHODS The 2019 year's 6 months' data as a prepandemic period compared to the 2020 year's same period as a pandemic date. Demographic data were collected. Operations were divided into seven groups: tumor, spinal, vascular, cerebrospinal fluid disorders, hematoma, local, and minor surgery, respectively. We classified the hematoma cluster into subgroups to evaluate the etiology: epidural, acute subdural, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, depressed skull fractures, and others. Patients' COVID-19 test results were collected. RESULTS Total operations decreased from 972 to 795 (Δ18.2%) during the pandemic. All groups, except minor surgery cases, decreased compared to the prepandemic period. Also, vascular procedures for females increased during the pandemic period. While focusing on the hematoma subgroups, there was decreasing in epidural and subdural hematomas, depressed skull fractures, and total case numbers; an increase in subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracerebral hemorrhage. Overall mortality significantly increased to 9.6% from 6.8% during the pandemic (P = 0.033). Eight (1.0%) of 795 patients were COVID-19-positive; three of them died. Neurosurgery residents and academicians were unsatisfied with decreased number of operations, training, and research productivity. CONCLUSIONS The pandemic and restrictions affected negatively the health system and people's access to healthcare. Our retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate these effects and take lessons for the next similar situations. People's access to health care should be considered when lockdown restrictions.

Abstract
Uric acid has antioxidant properties. To examine whether a low uric acid level is associated with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) progression via inflammation, alveolar damage, and/or coagulation abnormality, a retrospective observational study of 488 patients with non-severe COVID-19 and serum uric acid level ≤7 mg/dL at admission was conducted. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), serum Krebs von den Lungen 6 (KL-6), and plasma D-dimer levels were also measured as markers of inflammation, alveolar damage, and coagulation abnormality, respectively. Median values for uric acid, CRP, KL-6, and D-dimer at admission were 4.4 mg/dL, 3.33 mg/dL, 252.0 U/mL, and 0.8 µg/mL, respectively. Among the total cohort, 95 (19.5%) progressed to severe COVID-19 with a median (interquartile range) time of 7 (4–14) days. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that low uric acid level was associated with a higher rate of severe COVID-19 progression. However, uric acid level was inversely associated with CRP level, and the association between the level of uric acid and severe COVID-19 progression was significantly different with and without CRP level inclusion. In contrast, no such association was found for KL-6 or D-dimer level. Low uric acid may contribute to severe COVID-19 progression via increased inflammation in subjects without hyperuricemia.
