Abstract
Addressing health-related concerns linked to the metabolite profile of lamb meat has become paramount, in line with the growing demand for enhanced flavor and taste. We examined the impact of Perilla frutescens seeds on Tan lamb growth, carcass traits, and metabolite profiles. Three diets were employed: a low-concentrate group (LC), a high-concentrate group (HC), and a PFS group (the LC diet supplemented with 3% Perilla frutescens seeds) on a dry matter basis. Forty-five male Tan-lambs (approximately six months) with similar body weights (25.1 kg ± 1.12 SD) were randomly assigned to one of these three groups for 84-day feeding, including an initial 14-day adjustment phase. The supplementation of PFS resulted in increased average daily gain (P < 0.01) and improved carcass quality and meat color (P < 0.05). Additionally, it led to an enhancement in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (P < 0.05) and a reduction in the omega-6/omega-3 ratio (P < 0.05). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, 369 volatile compounds were identified with enhanced levels of acetaldehyde and 1,2,4-trimethyl-benzene associated with PFS (P < 0.05). Among the 807 compounds identified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, there were 66 significantly differential compounds (P < 0.05), including 43 hydrophilic metabolites and 23 lipids. PFS supplementation led to significant alterations in 66 metabolites, with three metabolites including 2,5-diisopropyl-3-methylphenol, 3-hydroxydecanoic acid, and lysophosphatidylcholine (15:0) emerging as potential PFS-related biomarkers. The study indicates that PFS supplementation can enhance Tan-lamb growth, feed efficiency, and meat quality, potentially providing lamb meat with improved flavor and nutritional characteristics.

Abstract
Perilla frutescens (PF) leaf is a traditional Chinese medicine and food with beneficial effects on allergic asthma. We sought to elucidate the active compounds, the targets, and underlying mechanisms of PF leaf in the treatment of allergic asthma by using experimental pharmacology and network pharmacology. An OVA-allergic asthma murine model was constructed to evaluate the effect of PF leaf on allergic asthma. And the network pharmacology and western blotting were performed to evaluate its underlying mechanisms in allergic asthma. PF leaf treatment significantly improved the lung function of OVA model mice and mitigated lung injury by significantly reducing of OVA-specific immunoglobulin E in serum, and interleukin 4, interleukin 5 and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. 50 core targets were screened based on 8 compounds (determined by high performance liquid chromatography) through compound-target- disease network. Furthermore, MAPK signaling pathway was identified as the pathway mediated by PF leaf with the most potential against allergic asthma. And the WB results showed that PF leaf could down-regulate the expression of p-ERK, p-JNK and p-p38, which was highly consistent with the predicted targets and pathway network. In conclusion, this study provides the evidence to support the molecular mechanisms of PF leaf on the treatment of allergic asthma using network pharmacology and in vivo experiments.

Abstract
High-quality molecular markers are essential for marker-assisted selection to accelerate breeding progress. Compared with diploid species, recently diverged polyploid crop species tend to have highly similar homeologous subgenomes, which is expected to limit the development of broadly applicable locus-specific single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assays. Furthermore, it is particularly challenging to make genome-wide marker sets for species that lack a reference genome. Here, we report the development of a genome-wide set of kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) markers for marker-assisted recurrent selection (MARS) in the tetraploid minor crop perilla. To find locus-specific SNP markers across the perilla genome, we used genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to construct linkage maps of two F2 populations. The two resulting high-resolution linkage maps comprised 2326 and 2454 SNP markers that spanned a total genetic distance of 2133 cM across 16 linkage groups and 2169 cM across 21 linkage groups, respectively. We then obtained a final genetic map consisting of 22 linkage groups with 1123 common markers from the two genetic maps. We selected 96 genome-wide markers for MARS and confirmed the accuracy of markers in the two F2 populations using a high-throughput Fluidigm system. We confirmed that 91.8% of the SNP genotyping results from the Fluidigm assay were the same as the results obtained through GBS. These results provide a foundation for marker-assisted backcrossing and the development of new varieties of perilla.

Abstract
The Elsholtzieae, comprising ca. 7 genera and 70 species, is a small tribe of Lamiaceae (mint family). Members of Elsholtzieae are of high medicinal, aromatic, culinary, and ornamentals value. Despite the rich diversity and value of Elsholtzieae, few molecular markers or plastomes are available for phylogenetics. In the present study, we employed high-throughput sequencing to assemble two Mosla plastomes, M. dianthera and M. scabra, for the first time, and compared with other plastomes of Elsholtzieae. The plastomes of Elsholtzieae exhibited a quadripartite structure, ranging in size from 148,288 bp to 152,602 bp. Excepting the absence of the pseudogene rps19 in Elsholtzia densa, the exhaustive tally revealed the presence of 132 genes (113 unique genes). Among these, 85 protein-coding genes (CDS), 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 2 pseudogenes (rps19 and ycf1) were annotated. Comparative analyses showed that the plastomes of these species have minor variations at the gene level. Notably, the E. eriostchya plastid genome exhibited increased GC content regions in the LSC and SSC, resulting in an increased overall GC content of the entire plastid genome. The E. densa plastid genome displayed modified boundaries due to inverted repeat (IR) contraction. The sequences of CDS and intergenic regions (IGS) with elevated variability were identified as potential molecular markers for taxonomic inquiries within Elsholtzieae. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that four genera formed monophyletic entities, with Mosla and Perilla forming a sister clade. This clade was, in turn, sister to Collinsonia, collectively forming a sister group to Elsholtzia. Both CDS, and CDS + IGS could construct a phylogenetic tree with stronger support. These findings facilitate species identification and DNA barcoding investigations in Elsholtzieae and provide a foundation for further exploration and resource utilization within this tribe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perilla frutescens is widely used as both a medicine and a food worldwide. Its volatile oils are its active ingredients, and, based on the different volatile constituents, P. frutescens can be divided into several chemotypes, with perilla ketone (PK) being the most common. However, the key genes involved in PK biosynthesis have not yet been identified. RESULTS In this study, metabolite constituents and transcriptomic data were compared in leaves of different levels. The variation in PK levels was the opposite of that of isoegoma ketone and egoma ketone in leaves at different levels. Based on transcriptome data, eight candidate genes were identified and successfully expressed in a prokaryotic system. Sequence analysis revealed them to be double bond reductases (PfDBRs), which are members of the NADPH-dependent, medium-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (MDR) superfamily. They catalyze the conversion of isoegoma ketone and egoma ketone into PK in in vitro enzymatic assays. PfDBRs also showed activity on pulegone, 3-nonen-2-one, and 4-hydroxybenzalacetone. In addition, several genes and transcription factors were predicted to be associated with monoterpenoid biosynthesis, and their expression profiles were positively correlated with variations in PK abundance, suggesting their potential functions in PK biosynthesis. CONCLUSIONS The eight candidate genes encoding a novel double bond reductase related to perilla ketone biosynthesis were identified in P. frutescens, which carries similar sequences and molecular features as the MpPR and NtPR from Nepeta tenuifolia and Mentha piperita, respectively. These findings not only reveal the pivotal roles of PfDBR in exploring and interpreting PK biological pathway but also contribute to facilitating future studies on this DBR protein family.

Abstract
Perilla leaves are known to be a rich source of polyphenols, which have been shown to exhibit various biological effects. This study aimed to compare the bioefficacies and bioactivities of fresh (PLEf) and dry (PLEd) Thai perilla (Nga-mon) leaf extracts. Phytochemical analysis indicated that both PLEf and PLEd were abundant in rosmarinic acid and bioactive phenolic compounds. PLEd, which had higher levels of rosmarinic acid but lower levels of ferulic acid and luteolin than PLEf, exhibited greater effectiveness in a free radical scavenging assay. Furthermore, both extracts were found to suppress intracellular ROS generation and exhibit antimutagenic activity against food-borne carcinogens in S. typhimurium. They also attenuated lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells by inhibiting the expression of nitric oxide, iNOS, COX-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 through the suppression of NF-κB activation and translocation. However, PLEf exhibited a higher ability to suppress cellular ROS production and higher antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory activities than PLEd, which can be attributed to its combination of phytochemical components. Overall, PLEf and PLEd have the potential to serve as natural bioactive antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anti-inflammatory agents to achieve potential health benefits.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to develop natural and/or functional materials with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. We obtained extracts from natural plants through an oil and hot-water extraction process and prepared an extract composite of an effective unsaturated fatty acid complex (EUFOC). Furthermore, the antioxidant effect of the extract complex was evaluated, and the anti-inflammatory effect was explored by assessing its inhibitory effect on nitric oxide production through its HA-promoting effect. We conducted a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide assay to evaluate the cell viability of the EUFOC, and the results showed that EUFOC was not cytotoxic at the test concentrations. In addition, it showed no endogenous cytotoxicity in HaCaT (human keratinocyte) cells. The EUFOC showed excellent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl- and superoxide-scavenging abilities. Moreover, it exerted an inhibitory effect on NO production at concentrations that did not inhibit cell viability. The secretion of all the cytokines was increased by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment; however, this was inhibited by the EUFOC in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, hyaluronic acid content was markedly increased by the EUFOC in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the EUFOC has excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and hence, it can be used as a functional material in various fields.

Abstract
Perilla frutescens (PF) seed residue is a waste from perilla oil production that still contains nutrients and phytochemicals. This study aimed to investigate the chemoprotective action of PF seed residue crude ethanolic extract (PCE) on the inflammatory-induced promotion stage of rat colon carcinogenesis and cell culture models. PCE 0.1 and 1 g/kg body weight were administered by oral gavage to rats after receiving dimethylhydrazine (DMH) with one week of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) supplementation. PCE at high dose exhibited a reduction in aberrant crypt foci (ACF) number (66.46%) and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to the DMH + DSS group (p < 0.01). Additionally, PCE could either modulate the inflammation induced in murine macrophage cells by bacterial toxins or suppress the proliferation of cancer cell lines, which was induced by the inflammatory process. These results demonstrate that the active components in PF seed residue showed a preventive effect on the aberrant colonic epithelial cell progression by modulating inflammatory microenvironments from the infiltrated macrophage or inflammatory response of aberrant cells. Moreover, consumption of PCE could alter rat microbiota, which might be related to health benefits. However, the mechanisms of PCE on the microbiota, which are related to inflammation and inflammatory-induced colon cancer progression, need to be further investigated.

Abstract
Objective The multi-systemic inflammation as a result of COVID-19 can persevere long after the initial symptoms of the illness have subsided. These effects are referred to as Long-COVID. Our research focused on the contribution of the Spike protein S1 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 (Spike S1) on the lung inflammation mediated by NLRP3 inflammasome machinery and the cytokine releases, interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-1beta, and IL-18, in lung epithelial cells. This study has attempted to identify the naturally- occurring agents that act against inflammation-related long-COVID. The seed meal of Perilla frutescens (P. frutescens), which contains two major dietary polyphenols (rosmarinic acid and luteolin), has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammation activities. Therefore, we have established the ethyl acetate fraction of P. frutescens seed meal (PFEA) and determined its anti-inflammatory effects on Spike S1 exposure in A549 lung cells. Methods PFEA was established using solvent-partitioned extraction. Rosmarinic acid (Ra) and luteolin (Lu) in PFEA were identified using the HPLC technique. The inhibitory effects of PFEA and its active compounds against Spike S1-induced inflammatory response in A549 cells were determined by RT-PCR and ELISA. The mechanistic study of anti-inflammatory properties of PFEA and Lu were determined using western blot technique. Results PFEA was found to contain Ra (388.70 ± 11.12 mg/g extract) and Lu (248.82 ± 12.34 mg/g extract) as its major polyphenols. Accordingly, A549 lung cells were pre-treated with PFEA (12.5-100 μg/mL) and its two major compounds (2.5-20 μg/mL) prior to the Spike S1 exposure at 100 ng/mL. PFEA dose-dependently exhibited anti-inflammatory properties upon Spike S1-exposed A549 cells through IL-6, IL-1β, IL-18, and NLRP3 gene suppressions, as well as IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-18 cytokine releases with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Importantly, Lu possesses superior anti-inflammatory properties when compared with Ra (p < 0.01). Mechanistically, PFEA and Lu effectively attenuated a Spike S1-induced inflammatory response through downregulation of the JAK1/STAT3-inflammasome-dependent inflammatory pathway as evidenced by the downregulation of NLRP3, ASC, and cleaved-caspase-1 of the NLRP3 inflammasome components and by modulating the phosphorylation of JAK1 and STAT3 proteins (p < 0.05). Conclusion The findings suggested that luteolin and PFEA can modulate the signaling cascades that regulate Spike S1-induced lung inflammation during the incidence of Long-COVID. Consequently, luteolin and P. frutescens may be introduced as potential candidates in the preventive therapeutic strategy for inflammation-related post-acute sequelae of COVID-19.

Abstract
Maintaining insoluble plant-based ingredients in suspension and ensuring long-term physical stability is particularly challenging for formulators of green cosmetics. This study aimed to evaluate the structure and applicative properties of gel and gel-cream topical formulations suitable for delivering an insoluble phytocomplex on the vaginal mucosa and maintaining its integrity. For this purpose, we studied the compatibility of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton phytocomplex (PFP), derived from in vitro plant cell cultures and presented as a powder finely dispersed in glycerin, with different classes of natural rheological modifiers (such as xanthan gum, sclerotium gum, succinoglycan, xyloglucan, diutan gum, hydroxypropyl guar gum derivative) in gel and gel-cream formulations, to meet the needs of the cosmetic market for naturalness and biodegradability. Through rheological and texture analyses, we studied the physico–mechanical properties of the samples, comparing the performances of the chosen polysaccharides to those of acrylic polymeric rheological modifiers, evaluating their contribution in terms of stability and applicative properties. Since a weak-gel rheological pattern proved to be the optimal one to keep the actives in suspension, the associations of tamarind seed polysaccharides with succinoglycan or scleroglucan were the most suitable for the formulation of mucoadhesive gels.

Abstract
As components of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with many physiological activities, perilla ketone and isoegomaketone isolated from perilla essential oil are important active components of Perilla frutescens. Recent studies have shown that these two compounds have promising antitumor, antifungal, antirheumatoid arthritis, antiobesity, anti-inflammatory, healing-promoting, and other activities and can be used to combat toxicity from immunotherapy. Therefore, the multitude of pharmacological activities and effects demonstrate the broad research potential of perilla ketone and isoegomaketone. However, no reviews have been published related to the pharmacological activities or effects of perilla ketone and isoegomaketone. The purpose of this review is as follows: (1) outline the recent advances made in understanding the pharmacological activities of perilla ketone and isoegomaketone; (2) summarize their effects; and (3) discuss future research perspectives.

Abstract
Today, one of the most important challenges of ensuring the society's health is the prevention of civilization diseases. Most of them are associated with an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals in the human body. Due to the need to increase the intake of antioxidants, opportunities are being studied to increase their consumption. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of plant extracts of marigold (Tagetes erecta spp.) (MEx) and perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) (PEx) on selected qualitative properties of muffins. We studied the effects of the extracts in amounts of 1% (1), 3% (3), and 5% (5) on selected muffin characteristics, i.e., crust and crumb color, cooking yield, specific volume, and water activity, and changes in textural properties as well as sensory acceptance analysis. The level of crust lightness (L*) of muffins was lower than that of the control sample only for the samples with the PEx. For the crumb, the muffins with MEx and PEx were darker than the control sample. Fortification of muffins resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in antioxidant capacity. The PEx_3 and PEx_5 samples were rated highest in the sensory acceptance evaluation. The other quality attributes were similar to the control sample, indicating the validity of introducing extracts in the muffin recipe.

Abstract
Perilla seed oil is mainly composed of omega-3 fatty acid (α-linolenic acid, ALA). Despite being nutritionally favorable and rich in unsaturated fatty acids, its low oxidative stability limits its application in food. Thus, the present study aimed to formulate a stable oil blend using perilla seed oil with selected vegetable oil of higher stability characteristics and balance the ratio of the fatty acids. Hence, improving the nutritional and functional value of the blended oil. Perilla seed oil was blended with different edible oil (palm olein, coconut oil, and groundnut oil) in ratios of 20:80 and 30:70. All the blended oils were studied for their fatty acid composition, physicochemical properties, oxidative stability, and nutritional quality index. It was found that perilla seed oil blended with saturated oil like palm olein had improved physicochemical properties and oxidative stability (0.5 h to 6.5 h). The fatty acids ratio of perilla and palm olein blends was close to the recommended value given by the World health organization (WHO). The nutritional quality indices (atherogenic index, the thrombogenic index, and hypocholesterolemic: hypercholesterolemic ratio) of blended oil were also improved compared to the individual oils.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a worldwide health problem. An effective treatment for IBD is unavailable, and potential therapeutic agents should be developed for treating colonic inflammation. In this study, we demonstrated that isoegomaketone (IK), an essential oil component of a mutant cultivar of Perilla frutescens produced through radiation breeding, reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, and interleukin-12p40, in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse primary macrophages. Furthermore, when 5 mg/kg IK was administered to mice with dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis, it ameliorated the severity of the disease as assessed by survival, body weight, and colonic damage. These results suggested that 5 mg/kg IK has a preventive effect in colitis and can be a novel alternative therapy for treating colitis.

Abstract
Perilla is an annual herb with a unique aroma and taste that has been cultivated in Korea for hundreds of years. It has been widely cultivated in many Asian and European countries as a food and medicinal crop. Recently, several viruses have been reported to cause diseases in perilla in Korea, including turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), which is known as a brassica pathogen due to its significant damage to brassica crops. In this study, we determined the complete genome sequences of two new TuMV isolates originating from perilla in Korea. Full-length infectious cDNA clones of these two isolates were constructed, and their infectivity was tested by agroinfiltration of Nicotiana benthamiana and sap inoculation of Chinese cabbage and radish plants. In addition, we analyzed the phylogenetic relationship of six new Korean TuMV isolates to members of the four major groups. We also used RDP4 software to conduct recombination analysis of recent isolates from Korea, which provided new insight into the evolutionary relationships of Korean isolates of TuMV.

Abstract
Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. frutescens (egoma in Japan) is a traditional oilseed that has several varieties with different photoperiod responses. Although egoma pomace, industrial waste produced during oil extraction, is a rich source of macro- and micro-nutrients such as protein, fiber, minerals, and polyphenols, it has not yet been used for purposes other than livestock feeding. To find out a better use of perilla pomace and its function, we selected four varieties of egoma originating from different regions with different photoperiod responses: two varieties were from Japan, which are broadly cultivated for oilseed and are highly sensitive to light and temperature. The other two varieties from Nepal, which are tolerant to low light and low temperature. Rosmarinic acid-3-O-glucoside, rosmarinic acid, and apigenin-7-O-glucoside were detected as the main polyphenolic constituents in every variety, while apigenin and luteolin were present only in perilla pomace from Japan. In IgE-sensitized RBL-2H3 cells, polyphenols derived from two varieties of Japan suppressed degranulation of mast cells, but those derived from the two varieties of Nepal did not, indicating that apigenin and luteolin may be in part responsible for the anti-allergic response. In addition, it was found that proteins involved in the degranulation signaling pathway, such as PLCγ2, Syk, and Akt, were less phosphorylated in cells treated with the egoma pomace extracts of Japanese origin. Taken together, pomace from egoma varieties derived from different regions may differently modulate allergic response in part due to the difference in polyphenol composition and may be applied to develop nutraceuticals and functional foods fortified with anti-allergic properties.

Abstract
Industrially, after the removal of oil from perilla seeds (PS) by screw-type compression, the large quantities of residual perilla seed meal (PSM) becomes non-valuable waste. Therefore, to increase the health value and price of PS and PSM, we focused on the biological effects of perilla seed oil (PSO) and rosmarinic acid-rich fraction (RA-RF) extracted from PSM for their role in preventing oxidative stress and inflammation caused by TNF-α exposure in an A549 lung adenocarcinoma culture model. The A549 cells were pretreated with PSO or RA-RF and followed by TNF-α treatment. We found that PSO and RA-RF were not toxic to TNF-α-induced A549 cells. Both extracts significantly decreased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this cell line. The mRNA expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and COX-2 were significantly decreased by the treatment of PSO and RA-RF. The Western blot indicated that the expression of MnSOD, FOXO1, and NF-κB and phosphorylation of JNK were also significantly diminished by PSO and RA-RF treatment. The results demonstrated that PSO and RA-RF act as antioxidants to scavenge TNF-α induced ROS levels, resulting in decreased the expression of MnSOD, FOXO1, NF-κB and JNK signaling pathway in a human lung cell culture exposed to TNF-α.

Abstract
Nutritional composition and growth performance of sago palm weevil larvae (SPWL) fed with ground sago palm trunk mixed with different supplements including commercial pig feed, rice bran, cornmeal, soybean meal, and perilla seed were evaluated. SPWL fed with supplemented diets were richer in protein, lipid, and mineral contents (p < 0.05). Marked increases in polyunsaturated fatty acids (10.75-fold) and omega-3 fatty acids (25.42-fold) with the lowest n-6:n-3 ratio, atherogenicity index, and thrombogenicity index were found in SPWL fed with perilla seed (p < 0.05). Perilla seed, cornmeal, and soybean meal improved essential amino acid content and essential amino acid index of SPWL. Growth performance varied, depending on feed compositions, where a comparable or even greater effect was observed in SPWL fed with supplemented diets compared to control. Therefore, plant-based supplements, especially perilla seed, efficiently improved nutritional quality of SPWL, making them more attractive in terms of nutritional and economical value.

Abstract
Seeds play important roles in human nutrition and health since ancient time. The term "specialty" has recently been applied to seeds to describe high-value and/or uncommon food products. Since then, numerous studies have been conducted to identify various classes of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols in specialty seeds. This review discusses nutrients, fat-soluble bioactives, polyphenols/bioactives, antioxidant activity, bioavailability, health benefits, and safety/toxicology of commonly consumed eight specialty seeds, namely, black cumin, chia, hemp, flax, perilla, pumpkin, quinoa, and sesame. Scientific results from the existing literature published over the last decade have been compiled and discussed. These specialty seeds, having numerous fat-soluble bioactives and polyphenols, together with their corresponding antioxidant activities, have increasingly been consumed. Hence, these specialty seeds can be considered as a valuable source of dietary supplements and functional foods due to their health-promoting bioactive components, polyphenols, and corresponding antioxidant activities. The phytochemicals from these specialty seeds demonstrate bioavailability in humans with promising health benefits. Additional long-term and well-design human intervention trials are required to ascertain the health-promoting properties of these specialty seeds.

Collagenase and Melanogenesis Inhibitory Effects of Perilla Frutescens Pomace Extract and Its Efficacy in Topical Cosmetic Formulations. COSMETICS 2020. Abstract
In previous studies, Perilla frutescens pomace was shown to contain bioactive phenolic compounds and good anti-oxidative activity. However, reports about collagenase activity and melanogenesis inhibitory effects of P. frutescens pomace are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the bioactivity of P. frutescens pomace extract and incorporate the extract into a cosmetic formulation for evaluating its effects on collagenase and melanogenesis inhibition on human skin. The P. frutescens seeds after an oil pressing process were extracted with ethanol (70% v/v) in order to examine the remaining phytochemical compounds, the bioactivity in pomace perilla, and its efficacy as a skincare product. In this study, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of P. frutescens seed extract (PFSE) were determined using spectrophotometry. The free radical scavenging activity was determined with 2, 2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) ABTS radicals. Additionally, the effects on collagenase activity, melanin content, and alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) on the viability of cultured B16F10 melanoma cells were investigated. Skin irritation and efficacy of PFSE cream for skin elasticity and skin color were also clinically evaluated. The total phenolic content with gallic acid equivalents (GAE) value and total flavonoids content with catechin equivalents (CE) value were, respectively, 92.79 ± 1.19 and 56.02 ± 2.83 mg/g. Furthermore, PFSE significantly inhibited the collagenase activity (p < 0.001) at the concentration of 400 µg/mL (82 ± 3.23%). These results clearly demonstrated the anti-melanogenic effects on B16F10 cells without causing any cytotoxicity or death. Although there was a slight improvement in skin elasticity in the 4th week compared to the previous week, the 4th week melanin content of the skin significantly decreased from the beginning (p < 0.05) without any irritations. In conclusion, PFSE could be cosmetically considered as a key ingredient that effectively lessens the effects of skin aging and skin hyperpigmentation disorders.

Abstract
Perilla oil has been considered to have excellent potential for treating various diseases due to its contents of beneficial fatty acids, such as α-linolenic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. The therapeutic effects and molecular mechanism of an α-linolenic acid-enriched cold-pressed perilla oil (LEP) on hepatic steatosis of an obesity model were investigated by analyzing alterations in fat accumulation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated autophagy, in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity C57BL/6N mice treated with LEP for 16 weeks. Although no significant alterations were detected in body weight and most organ weights, the liver weight and accumulation of lipid droplets in the liver section were significantly lower in HFD + LEP treated group as compared to the HFD + Vehicle treated group. Reduced mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis and lipogenesis regulating factors, including the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP)α, fatty acid synthase (FAS), and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein 2 (aP2) were observed after LEP treatment for 16 weeks, while the levels of lipolysis were remarkably increased in the same group. Moreover, the LEP-treated groups showed suppression of ER stress-regulating factors, such as the C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α), inositol-requiring protein 1 (IRE1)α, and Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK) during anti-hepatic steatosis effects. The expression level of the microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3) protein and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/ mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway for the autophagy response showed a significant decrease in the HFD+LEP-treated group. Furthermore, ER stress-mediated autophagy was accompanied with enhanced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), JNK, and p38 protein in the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling pathway. Taken together, the results of the present study indicate that treatment with LEP inhibits hepatic steatosis in the HFD-induced obese model through regulation of adipogenesis and lipolysis. We believe our results are the first to show that the anti-hepatic steatosis activity of α-linolenic acid from cold-pressed perilla oil might be tightly correlated with the amelioration of ER stress-mediated autophagy.

Abstract
Positive physiological benefits of several plant oils on the UV-induced photoaging have been reported in some cell lines and model mice, but perilla oil collected from the seeds of Perilla frutescens L. has not been investigated in this context. To study the therapeutic effects of cold-pressed perilla oil (CPO) on UV-induced photoaging in vitro and in vivo, UV-induced cellular damage and cutaneous photoaging were assessed in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) and HR-1 hairless mice. CPO contained five major fatty acids including linolenic acid (64.11%), oleic acid (16.34%), linoleic acid (11.87%), palmitic acid (5.06%), and stearic acid (2.48%). UV-induced reductions in NHDF cell viability, ROS production, SOD activity, and G2/M cell cycle arrest were remarkably improved in UV + CPO treated NHDF cells as compared with UV + Vehicle treated controls. Also, UV-induced increases in MMP-1 protein and galactosidase levels were remarkably suppressed by CPO. In UV-radiated hairless mice, topical application of CPO inhibited an increase in wrinkle formation, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema value, hydration and melanin index on dorsal skin of UVB-irradiated hairless mice. CPO was observed to similarly suppress UV-induced increases in epidermal thickness, mast cell numbers, and galactosidase and MMP-3 mRNA levels. These results suggest CPO has therapeutic potential in terms of protecting against skin photoaging by regulating skin morphology, histopathology and oxidative status.

Abstract
The current trend for substituting synthetic compounds with natural ones in the design and production of functional and healthy foods has increased the research interest about natural colorants. Although coloring agents from plant origin are already used in the food and beverage industry, the market and consumer demands for novel and diverse food products are increasing and new plant sources are explored. Fresh vegetables are considered a good source of such compounds, especially when considering the great color diversity that exists among the various species or even the cultivars within the same species. In the present review we aim to present the most common species of colored vegetables, focusing on leafy and fruit vegetables, as well as on vegetables where other plant parts are commercially used, with special attention to blue color. The compounds that are responsible for the uncommon colors will be also presented and their beneficial health effects and antioxidant properties will be unraveled.
