"It's in the family circle": Communication promoting Indigenous family resilience

OBJECTIVE

We use the Framework of Historical Oppression, Resilience, and Transcendence (FHORT) to investigate the framework's core concept of family resilience and related protective and promotive factors that contribute to greater resilience, namely communication.

BACKGROUND

Scant research has examined communication in Indigenous families; yet general research suggests that family communication is a prominent aspect of family resilience.

METHODS

In this exploratory sequential mixed-methods study with data from 563 Indigenous participants (n = 436 qualitative and n = 127 quantitative survey), thematic reconstructive analysis was used to qualitatively understand participants' experiences of family communication and quantitatively examine protective factors for family resilience.

RESULTS

The following themes related to family communication as a component of family resilience emerged from qualitative analysis: "It's in the Family Circle": Discussing Problems as a Family with the subtheme: Honesty between Partners; (b) "Never Bring Adult Business into Kids' Lives": Keeping Adult Conversations Private; and (c) "Trust Us Enough to Come to Us": Open Communication between Parents and Children. Regression analysis indicated that higher community and social support, relationship quality, and life satisfaction were associated with greater family resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Positive communication practices are a strong component of resilience, healthy Indigenous families. Promotive factors at the community (social and community support), relational (relationship quality), and individual (life satisfaction) levels positively contribute to Indigenous family resilience.

IMPLICATIONS

Clinical programs providing practical tools to foster healthy communication - both about difficult topics as well as positive topics - are promising avenues to foster resilience.

Family and Friend Influence on Urban-Dwelling American Indian Adolescent Girl's Sexual Risk Behavior

Previous research with American Indian (AI) adolescent sexual risk behavior primarily focused on reservation-dwelling youth despite 70% of AIs living off Native lands. Using grounded theory methodology, I sampled 20 adolescent AI girls via talking circles and interviews to explore the perceptions of AI adolescent girls living in an urban, Midwest area about the influence of family and friends on their sexual behavior. Similar to research with other racial groups, participants cited their family and friends as a major influence. Five unique themes emerged related to family and friend influence. Urban-dwelling AI girls rely on their female family members and peers for information related to sex and receive varying messages from their networks of family and friends, which often overlap. AI youth have unique family groups yet have some similarities to other ethnic groups with regard to family and friend relationships that may allow for enhanced intervention development.

School-related assets and youth risk behaviors: alcohol consumption and sexual activity

BACKGROUND

Two risk behaviors, alcohol consumption and early initiation of sexual intercourse (ISI), can have devastating consequences for youth. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of school connectedness and school-related behaviors (eg, academic performance, skipping school, getting into trouble at school) with these 2 risk behaviors.

METHODS

The Youth Asset Survey (YAS) was administered to 1117 youth/parent pairs in their homes using Computer-Assisted Personal/Self-Interviewing (CAPI/CASI). The YAS measures 17 youth assets and risk behaviors including alcohol consumption and sexual activity.

RESULTS

The mean age of the sample was 14.3 years; 53% were female; and 70% were from 2-parent homes. Five school-related behaviors were positively associated with no ISI. Four school-related behaviors were positively associated with reporting no alcohol consumption in the past 30 days, including the School Connectedness asset (only among 12- to 13-year-olds), not skipping school (only among non-Hispanic Caucasians), staying out of trouble, and paying attention.

CONCLUSIONS

School is very much a part of the lives of youth and therefore the relationship they have with their school experience is important and may influence their involvement in risk behaviors. Feeling connected to school is a positive asset that can protect youth from such risky behaviors as sexual initiation and alcohol consumption.

Supportive non-parental adults and adolescent psychosocial functioning: using social support as a theoretical framework

Supportive Non-Parental Adults (SNPAs), or non-parental adults who provide social support to youth, are present in the lives of many adolescents; yet to date, a guiding framework for organizing the existing literature on the provision of support provided by multiple types of SNPAS, such as teachers, natural mentors, and extended family members, as well as to inform future research efforts, is lacking. The aim of the current paper is to utilize the well-established lens of social support to integrate, across this broad range of literatures, recent findings regarding associations between SNPAs and four indices of adolescent psychosocial adjustment: academic functioning, self-esteem, and behavioral and emotional problems. Beyond offering an integrative framework for understanding the link between SNPAs and adolescent functioning, the issues reviewed here have potentially far-reaching consequences for adolescents and their families, as well as the professionals working with adolescents and their families in the health care, school, and community settings.

The Protective Effect of Family Strengths in Childhood against Adolescent Pregnancy and Its Long-Term Psychosocial Consequences

BACKGROUND

Few reports have addressed associations between family strengths during childhood and adolescent pregnancy and its consequences. We examined relationships among a number of childhood family strengths and adolescent pregnancy, risk behavior, and psychosocial consequences after adolescent pregnancy.

METHODS

Our retrospective cohort of 4648 women older than 18 years (mean age, 56 years) received primary care in San Diego, CA. Outcomes included adolescent pregnancy and psychosocial consequences compared with number of the following childhood family strengths: family closeness, support, loyalty, protection, love, importance, and responsiveness to health needs.

RESULTS

Of the cohort, 3082 participants (66%) reported 6 or 7 categories of childhood family strengths. Teen pregnancy occurred in 39%, 33%, 30%, 25%, 24%, 21%, and 19% of those with 0 or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 childhood family strengths, respectively (p for trend < 0.00001). When childhood abuse and household dysfunction were present, adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for adolescent pregnancy demonstrated an increasingly protective effect as numbers of childhood family strengths increased from 0 or 1 to 2 or 3, 4 or 5, and 6 or 7 (1.0 to 0.80), (1.0 to 0.80, 0.60, and 0.54, respectively). These findings were partly explained by progressive delays in initiation of sexual activity as the number of childhood family strengths increased. Adjusted ORs for psychosocial problem occurring decades later decreased as the number of childhood family strengths increased from 0 or 1 to 2 or 3, 4 or 5, and 6 or 7 (job problems, 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4; family problems, 1.0, 1.1, 0.7, 0.6; financial problems, 1.0, 0.9, 0.9, 0.6; high stress, 1.0, 1.1, 0.9, 0.8; uncontrollable anger, 1.0, 0.7, 0.7, 0.4).

CONCLUSIONS

Childhood family strengths are strongly protective against adolescent pregnancy, early initiation of sexual activity, and long-term psychosocial consequences.

Protective assets for non-use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among urban American Indian youth in Oklahoma

OBJECTIVE

This study explored associations between nine youth assets and tobacco, alcohol and other drug non-use among participating American Indian adolescents.

METHODS

Data from 134 American Indians, ages 13-19 years, participating in an inner-city youth asset study, were analyzed. Individual logistic regression analyses were conducted, controlling for demographic variables, with nine youth assets as the independent variables and alcohol, tobacco and other drug non-use as the dependent variables.

RESULTS

Among American Indian youth, nearly 79% reported not using alcohol in the past 30 days. The prevalence of tobacco non-use was somewhat lower than that of alcohol, with 71% reporting not using tobacco in the past 30 days. For other drug non-use, 87% reported not using other drugs in the past 30 days. The non-parental adult role models asset was significantly associated with non-use of alcohol (OR = 4.4, 95% CI 1.5-13.3), tobacco (OR = 7.5, 95% CI 2.2-25.6), and other drugs (OR = 5.0, 95% CI 1.5-16.8). The use of time (religion) asset was also significantly associated with alcohol non-use (OR = 2.8, 95% CI 1.1-7.2). The family communication asset was associated only with other drug non-use (OR = 3.1, 95% CI 1.02-9.4). For tobacco non-use, an interaction was observed between family structure and the good health practices (exercise/nutrition) asset. Among youth in single-parent households, the odds of tobacco non-use were 4.4 times greater among those who possessed the good health practices (exercise/nutrition) asset.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the relatively small sample size of American Indian youth, these results suggest an important role for specific youth assets in the prevention of substance abuse among American Indian youth.
