Nanoindentation hardness of particles used in magnetorheological finishing (MRF)

The Cause of Ribbon Fluctuation in Magnetorheological Finishing and Its Influence on Surface Mid-Spatial Frequency Error

In the high-power laser system, the mid-spatial frequency error of the surface of the high-power laser component will affect the normal operation of the high-power laser system. In order to improve the mid-spatial frequency error of the high-power laser component after magnetorheological finishing, the causes and influencing factors of the ribbon fluctuation in magnetorheological finishing are studied, and the influence of different ribbon fluctuation on the mid-spatial frequency error of the surface is studied. Firstly, the influence of different ribbon fluctuations on the mid-spatial frequency error of the machined surface is simulated by a computer. Secondly, the magnetic field in the circumferential direction of the polishing wheel, the fluctuation amount and frequency of the magnetorheological polishing ribbon are measured, and then the causes of the fluctuation of the magnetorheological polishing ribbon are analyzed. Moreover, through the principle of a single variable, the influence of process parameters on the fluctuation of magnetorheological polishing ribbon is explored. Finally, the fused silica component is scanned uniformly under the process parameters of magnetorheological polishing ribbon fluctuation of 40 μm, 80 μm, 150 μm, and 200 μm. The experimental results show that the greater the ribbon fluctuation, the greater the surface mid-spatial frequency error of the component, and the ribbon fluctuation is approximately linear with the RMS of the PSD2 in the mid-spatial frequency band on the surface of the component. Therefore, the fluctuation of the ribbon can be controlled by controlling the magnetorheological processing parameters, and the mid-spatial frequency band error on the surface of the high-power laser component can be significantly reduced by optimizing process parameters after magnetorheological finishing.

Wear Independent Similarity

This study presents a new factor that can be used to design materials where desired surface properties must be retained under in-system wear and abrasion. To demonstrate this factor, a synthetic nonwetting coating is presented that retains chemical and geometric performance as material is removed under multiple wear conditions: a coarse vitrified abradant (similar to sanding), a smooth abradant (similar to rubbing), and a mild abradant (a blend of sanding and rubbing). With this approach, such a nonwetting material displays unprecedented mechanical durability while maintaining desired performance under a range of demanding conditions. This performance, herein termed wear independent similarity performance (WISP), is critical because multiple mechanisms and/or modes of wear can be expected to occur in many typical applications, e.g., combinations of abrasion, rubbing, contact fatigue, weathering, particle impact, etc. Furthermore, these multiple wear mechanisms tend to quickly degrade a novel surface's unique performance, and thus many promising surfaces and materials never scale out of research laboratories. Dynamic goniometry and scanning electron microscopy results presented herein provide insight into these underlying mechanisms, which may also be applied to other coatings and materials.

Belt-MRF for large aperture mirrors

With high-determinacy and no subsurface damage, Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) has become an important tool in fabricating high-precision optics. But for large mirrors, the application of MRF is restricted by its small removal function and low material removal rate. In order to improve the material removal rate, shorten the processing cycle, we proposed a new MRF concept, named Belt-MRF to expand the application of MRF to large mirrors and made a prototype with a large remove function, using a belt instead of a very large polishing wheel to expand the polishing length. A series of experimental results on Silicon carbide (SiC) and BK 7 specimens and fabrication simulation verified that the Belt-MRF has high material removal rates, stable removal function and high convergence efficiency which makes it a promising technology for processing large aperture optical elements.

Comparative analysis of oxidation methods of reaction-sintered silicon carbide for optimization of oxidation-assisted polishing

Combination of the oxidation of reaction-sintered silicon carbide (RS-SiC) and the polishing of the oxide is an effective way of machining RS-SiC. In this study, anodic oxidation, thermal oxidation, and plasma oxidation were respectively conducted to obtain oxides on RS-SiC surfaces. By performing scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis and scanning white light interferometry (SWLI) measurement, the oxidation behavior of these oxidation methods was compared. Through ceria slurry polishing, the polishing properties of the oxides were evaluated. Analysis of the oxygen element on polished surfaces by SEM-EDX was conducted to evaluate the remaining oxide. By analyzing the three oxidation methods with corresponding polishing process on the basis of schematic diagrams, suitable application conditions for these methods were clarified. Anodic oxidation with simultaneous polishing is suitable for the rapid figuring of RS-SiC with a high material removal rate; polishing of a thermally oxidized surface is suitable for machining RS-SiC mirrors with complex shapes; combination of plasma oxidation and polishing is suitable for the fine finishing of RS-SiC with excellent surface roughness. These oxidation methods are expected to improve the machining of RS-SiC substrates and promote the application of RS-SiC products in the fields of optics, molds, and ceramics.

Ultrasmooth reaction-sintered silicon carbide surface resulting from combination of thermal oxidation and ceria slurry polishing

An ultrasmooth reaction-sintered silicon carbide surface with an rms roughness of 0.424 nm is obtained after thermal oxidation for 30 min followed by ceria slurry polishing for 30 min. By SEM-EDX analysis, we investigated the thermal oxidation behavior of RS-SiC, in which the main components are Si and SiC. As the oxidation rate is higher in the area with defects, there are no scratches or cracks on the surface after oxidation. However, a bumpy structure is formed after oxidation because the oxidation rates of Si and SiC differ. Through a theoretical analysis of thermal oxidation using the Deal-Grove model and the removal of the oxide layer by ceria slurry polishing in accordance with the Preston equation, a model for obtaining an ultrasmooth surface is proposed and the optimal processing conditions are presented.

Nanoscale indentation of polymer and composite polymer-silica core-shell submicrometer particles by atomic force microscopy

Atomic force microscopy was employed to probe the mechanical properties of surface-charged polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-based terpolymer and composite terpolymer core-silica shell particles in air and water media. The composite particles were achieved with two different approaches: using a silane coupling agent (composite A) or attractive electrostatic interactions (composite B) between the core and the shell. Young's moduli (E) of 4.3+/-0.7, 11.1+/-1.7, and 8.4+/-1.7 GPa were measured in air for the PMMA-based terpolymer, composite A, and composite B, respectively. In water, E decreases to 1.6+/-0.2 GPa for the terpolymer; it shows a slight decrease to 8.0+/-1.2 GPa for composite A, while it decreases to 2.9+/-0.6 GPa for composite B. This trend is explained by considering a 50% swelling of the polymer in water confirmed by dynamic light scattering. Close agreement is found between the absolute values of elastic moduli determined by nanoindentation and known values for the corresponding bulk materials. The thickness of the silica coating affects the mechanical properties of composite A. In the case of composite B, because the silica shell consists of separate particles free to move in the longitudinal direction that do not individually deform when the entire composite deforms, the elastic properties of the composites are determined exclusively by the properties of the polymer core. These results provide a basis for tailoring the mechanical properties of polymer and composite particles in air and in solution, essential in the design of next-generation abrasive schemes for several technological applications.

Experiments and observations regarding the mechanisms of glass removal in magnetorheological finishing

Recent advances in the study of the magnetorheological finishing (MRF) have allowed for the characterization of the dynamic yield stress of the magnetorheological (MR) fluid, as well as the nanohardness (H(nano)) of the carbonyl iron (CI) used in MRF. Knowledge of these properties has allowed for a more complete study of the mechanisms of material removal in MRF. Material removal experiments show that the nanohardness of CI is important in MRF with nonaqueous MR fluids with no nonmagnetic abrasives, but is relatively unimportant in aqueous MR fluids or when nonmagnetic abrasives are present. The hydrated layer created by the chemical effects of water is shown to change the way material is removed by hard CI as the MR fluid transitions from a nonaqueous MR fluid to an aqueous MR fluid. Drag force measurements and atomic force microscope scans demonstrate that, when added to a MR fluid, nonmagnetic abrasives (cerium oxide, aluminum oxide, and diamond) are driven toward the workpiece surface because of the gradient in the magnetic field and hence become responsible for material removal. Removal rates increase with the addition of these polishing abrasives. The relative increase depends on the amount and type of abrasive used.
