Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperthyroidism can mask concurrent chronic kidney disease in cats, and no accurate biomarkers are available to predict which cats will develop renal azotemia after radioiodine (131I) treatment. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To evaluate the potential of serum and urinary metabolites and metabolite ratios to predict post-131I renal azotemia in hyperthyroid cats. ANIMALS Hyperthyroid cats (n = 31), before and (3-12 months) after treatment with 131I at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Ghent University, Belgium). METHODS Retrospective study. Optimized and validated feline extraction and analysis protocols were employed for metabolic profiling of urine and serum samples using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry. A dual strategy of cross-validated univariate and penalized multivariate logistic regression was applied to determine predictivity (i.e., area under the curve [AUC], accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity) of individual biomarkers and panels. RESULTS All hyperthyroid cats were non-azotemic before 131I administration. After 131I treatment, 7 cats became persistently (≥ 2 timepoints) azotemic while 24 remained non-azotemic. Urinary asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) was identified as a pivotal predictor of post-131I azotemia in both univariate and multivariate modeling. When employed as a standalone biomarker, an AUC of 0.851, accuracy of 0.903, sensitivity of 0.714, and specificity of 0.958 were achieved. While pre-treatment USG was significantly different (P = 0.002) between both groups, it did not show enhanced prediction over ADMA, nor in multivariate modeling. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Urinary ADMA can accurately predict post-131I azotemia in hyperthyroid cats becoming euthyroid after 131I treatment. These findings can aid clinicians in managing owner expectations and modify treatment plans.

Abstract
ObjectivesThis study aimed to assess the impact of interlaboratory differences (in analysis technique and reference intervals [RIs]) on the measurement of serum creatinine (sCr) and serum symmetric dimethylarginine (sSDMA) concentrations in cats and on classification by stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD).MethodsFor the interlaboratory discrepancy study, samples from 30 client-owned cats (healthy or diagnosed with CKD) with sCr in the range of 130-200 µmol/l and urine specific gravity <1.035 were retrospectively selected. A single batch of samples was analysed for sCr and sSDMA with one in-house laboratory machine and in three commercial laboratories. In addition, sCr values from 63 healthy cats aged ⩾10 years were used to calculate an age-specific RI for the in-house analyser.ResultsDespite a relatively good correlation (interclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.875), the in-house analyser consistently reported lower sCr values, while for sSDMA, systematically higher values were obtained in one commercial laboratory (ICC = 0.707). A total of 22/30 (73%) cases had at least one laboratory reporting inconsistent sSDMA values in relation to the RI, and 23/30 (77%) for sCr. For subsequent staging using sSDMA, at least 1/4 laboratories indicated a different stage in 22/30 (73%) cases. For sCr, all laboratories classified the cats as stage 2; however, the in-house analyser classified 8/30 (27%) cats as stage 1. The RI (71-212 µmol/l) provided by the company for sCr measurement on the in-house machine was subsequently recalculated, resulting in a considerably lower upper limit (163 µmol/l) and a significantly (adjusted P value = 0.016) different proportion of cats with measurements outside the RI.Conclusions and relevanceClinicians must be careful when interpreting sCr and sSDMA values, as they may lead to discrepant outcomes due to interlaboratory variability. Moreover, age-specific RIs should be applied when available, facilitating the early detection of CKD in older cats.

Abstract
Background and Aim Query fever (Q fever) is an endemic zoonotic disease and ruminants are considered to be the primary source of infection in humans. It is caused by Coxiella burnetii which is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen with a worldwide distribution. This study estimated the prevalence of Q fever in livestock with a history of abortion in Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods Sera from 341 camels, 326 sheep, and 121 goats of either sex from various locations (Makkah, Jeddah, AL-Taif, AL-Qunfudah, AL-Laith, and AL-Kamil) were examined using a Q fever indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Among the 788 serum samples, 356 animals had anti-Coxiella burnetii immunoglobulin G antibodies with an overall seroprevalence of 45.4%. Significant differences were observed in seroprevalence between species and locations. Camels had the highest percentage of Q fever-positive sera, with a prevalence of 50.4%, followed by goats (44.6%) and sheep (36.8%), with a high significant difference between animals (p = 0.000). The prevalence was significantly higher in Makkah (65.4%) than in Jeddah (28.8%). Conclusion C. burnetii infection is prevalent in agricultural animals, especially camels maintained at livestock farms in Makkah province. Therefore, these animals considered as the main source of Q fever infections in Saudi Arabia, which is also a reason for the abortion in these animals. Therefore, there is an urgent need for further studies on Q fever infection with interventional approaches for prevention and control.

Abstract
Multiplexed analysis in medical diagnostics is widely accepted as a more thorough and complete method compared to single-analyte detection. While analytical methods like polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) exist for multiplexed detection of biomarkers, they remain time-consuming and expensive. Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are an attractive option for point-of-care testing, and examples of multiplexed LFAs exist. However, these devices are limited by spatial resolution of test lines, large sample volume requirements, cross-reactivity, and poor sensitivity. Recent work has developed capillary-flow microfluidic ELISA platforms as a more sensitive alternative to LFAs; however, multiplexed detection on these types of devices has yet to be demonstrated. In the aftermath of the initial SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the need for rapid, sensitive point-of-care devices has become ever clearer. Moving forward, devices that can distinguish between diseases with similar presenting symptoms would be the ideal home diagnostic. Here, the first example of a multiplexed capillary-flow immunoassay device for the simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers is reported. From a single sample addition step, the reagents and washing steps required for two simultaneous ELISAs are delivered to spatially separated test strips. Visual results can be obtained in <15 min, and images captured with a smartphone can be analyzed for quantitative data. This device was used to distinguish between and quantify H1N1 hemagglutinin (HA) and SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (N-protein). Using this device, analytical detection limits of 840 and 133 pg/mL were obtained for hemagglutinin and nucleocapsid protein, respectively. The presence of one target in the device did not increase the signal on the other test line, indicating no cross-reactivity between the assays. Additionally, simultaneous detection of both N-protein and HA was performed as well as simultaneous detection of N-protein and human C-reactive protein (CRP). Elevated levels of CRP in a patient infected with SARS-CoV-2 have been shown to correlate with more severe outcomes and a greater risk of death as well. To further expand on the simultaneous detection of two biomarkers, CRP and N-protein were detected simultaneously, and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 N-protein did not interfere with the detection of CRP when both targets were present in the sample.

Abstract
Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH)-pyometra complex is the most common uterine infection in adult and elderly bitches and can cause renal dysfunction. The aim of this study was to measure and compare urinary creatinine, urea, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), urinary protein-creatinine ratio (UPC), measurement of systolic blood pressure (SBP), and Doppler velocimetry of renal arteries in patients with CEH-pyometra complex before and after an average of 6 months of treatment, evaluating the possibility of the changes persisting. The evaluation was conducted at two moments: M1 (at the diagnosis of CEH-pyometra, n = 36) and M2 (after an average of six months of treatment, n = 16). For the control group, eight bitches with no changes in blood tests or history of conditions underwent Doppler ultrasound evaluation of the renal arteries. At both M1 and M2, we measured creatinine, urea, and serum SDMA, UPC, SBP, and Doppler ultrasound of the renal arteries. Patients were evaluated according to the following groups: azotemic (AZO) and non-azotemic (NAZO), and open and closed cervix pyometra. The parameters were compared between animals present in both moments presented as M1R (bitches that were in M1 and M2) and M2. Statistical significance was considered when p < .05. The medians found for creatinine in M1 were as follows: 1.15 mg/dL, being 1.8 mg/dL for AZO (12/36) and 0.95 mg/dL for NAZO (24/36); and in M2: 0.85 mg/dL (16/16), being 1.15 mg/dL for AZO (4/16) and 0.8 mg/dL for NAZO (12/36). For urea, in M1 it was 36 mg/dL (32/36), with AZO being 103 mg/dL (11/32) and 33 mg/dL in NAZO (21/32); and in M2 32 mg/dL (16/ 16), being 29 mg/dL for AZO (4/36), and 31 mg/dL for NAZO (3/15). The median SDMA measured in M1R was 17 μg/dL (15/16), with AZO being 31 μg/dL (3/15), and NAZO being 16.5 μg/dL (12/15); and in M2, SDMA was 12 μg/dL (16/16), with AZO being 12.5 μg/dL (4/16), and NAZO being 12 μg/dL (12/16). The median UPC measured in M1 was 1.15 (10/36), with AZO being 0.25 (1/10), and NAZO being 1.38 (9/10); and in M2, it was 0.2 (13/16), being 0.1 in AZO (4/13), and 0.2 (9/16) in NAZO. For SBP, in M1, it was 118 mmHg (30/36), with AZO being 102 mmHg (10/30) and 133 mmHg in NAZO (20/30); and in M2 142.5 mmHg (12/16), being 155 mmHg for AZO (4/12), and 140 mg/dL for NAZO (8/12). When comparing animals with open and closed cervixes, a difference was found between SDMA measurements (p = .001). There was a distinction between PI and RI of the left and right kidneys consecutively (p = .007; p = .033; p = .019; p = .041). Correlations found in M1: SDMA × PI RIM DIR (r = 0.873; p = .002), SDMA × PSV RIM ESQ (r = 0.840; p = .004), SDMA × EDV RIM ESQ (r = 0.675; p = .046). With this study, we conclude a return to normality of renal biomarkers and clinical parameters after six months. Yet, there is a persistence of Doppler velocimetric measurements between the two moments. Thus, this parameter is not suitable for identifying and classifying chronic kidney injury in bitches with pyometra.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nexus between mitochondrial function and kidney injury by using a dietary-induced obese minipig model. Female Lee-Sung minipigs feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for 6 months exhibited obesity, hyperglycaemia and dyslipidemia. HFD elevated the levels of plasma biomarkers related to renal injury, including symmetric dimethylarginine, creatinine and urea nitrogen. An extensive structural change in tubules and glomeruli was observed in HFD-fed pigs. A great amount of triacylglycerol was accumulated in HFD kidney compared to control kidney, whereas a reduction of ATP level and antioxidant capacity were exhibited in HFD kidney. Moreover, HFD altered the expressions of mitochondrial-related protein in renal cortex. To conclude, long-term HFD feeding to Lee-Sung minipigs induced obesity and kidney injury accompanied by abnormal mitochondrial functions in the renal cortex, suggesting an interrelationship with renal disease progression.

Abstract
Detection of renal disease in birds is currently reliant on biochemical measures such as uric acid, which is only elevated after significant renal compromise has occurred. Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) production has not been previously evaluated in birds and no reference intervals (RI) for measurement exist in avian species. This study aimed to develop an RI for SDMA in greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and evaluate the association between SDMA levels and renal disease. Blood from 60 flamingos was collected for RI development and the RI of SDMA was found to be 11.8-34.2 µg/dl. Symmetric dimethylarginine showed a strong positive correlation with uric acid, a moderate positive correlation with creatine kinase, and moderate negative correlations with total protein, albumin, and glucose. No correlation was found with pododermatitis score or body condition. Using the SDMA RI, six clinical cases were included for assessment of the clinical relevance of SDMA in renally compromised patients. All birds that were euthanized had elevated SDMA levels and severe renal or systemic pathology on necropsy.

Abstract
Background Despite improvements in habitational conditions, kidney disease is relatively common in tortoises. Objectives Purpose of this study was the establishment of Symmetrical dimethylarginine (SDMA) reference values for clinically healthy Hermann's Tortoises. Animals Clinically healthy Hermann's Tortoises (n = 131) were included in the period from October 2017 to September 2019. Methods Creatinine and other biomarkers were tested at IDEXX Laboratories, Germany using residual blood samples from Hermann's tortoises. SDMA was measured with the IDEXX test and verified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry at IDEXX Laboratories, USA. Results SDMA values ranged from 1 to 21 μg/dl (n = 131) for the IDEXX SDMA Test and SDMA values ranged from 1 to 17 μg/dl (n = 82) for LC-MS. For the comparison of the two measuring systems, the following results were obtained R 2 = 0.75 (p < 0.001). Conclusion and Clinical Importance SDMA can be measured in Hermann's Tortoises and the reference values range in clinically healthy animals is comparable to that of dogs and cats.

Abstract
Glomerular filtration rate is the gold-standard method for assessment of renal function but is rarely performed in routine toxicity studies. Standard serum biomarkers of renal function are insensitive and become elevated only with significant loss of organ function. Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a ubiquitous analyte that is freely filtered by the glomerulus and can be detected in serum. It has shown utility for the detection of renal injury in dogs and cats in clinical veterinary practice, but the potential utility of SDMA to detect renal injury in preclinical species or toxicity studies has not been thoroughly investigated. We utilized a well-characterized glomerular toxicant, puromycin aminonucleoside, to induce podocyte injury and subsequent proteinuria in young male Sprague-Dawley rats. At the end of 1 or 2 weeks, blood, urine, and kidney tissue were collected for analysis. One week following a single 50 mg/kg dose, urea nitrogen, creatinine, and albumin mean values were within historical control ranges, while SDMA was increased. Glomerular changes in these animals included periodic acid-Schiff positive globules within podocytes, podocyte hypertrophy by light microscopy, and podocyte degeneration with effacement of foot processes by electron microscopy (EM). Taken together, our data indicate that SDMA may be a useful biomarker for early detection of glomerular toxicities in rats.

Abstract
Greyhounds have developed numerous physiologic and hematologic adaptations specific to the breed. Adult Greyhounds have significantly higher serum creatinine (sCr) concentrations than non-Greyhound dogs; this is primarily attributed to their large muscle mass. Adult Greyhounds also have significantly higher symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) concentrations than non-Greyhound dogs. In this study we evaluated serum SDMA and sCr concentrations in 48 Greyhound pups from 11 litters, with no exposure to racing, in order to determine if the higher SDMA or sCr concentration in adults is a breed-related trait or is associated with extra-physiological causes (e.g., racing environment, drug administration, etc.). The distribution of SDMA concentration for all the pups (mean: 0.70 µmol/L; 95% CI: 0.70-0.74 µmol/L) was not statistically different from that found in a group of 183 adult Greyhounds; whereas, distribution of sCr concentration in the pups (mean: 76.9 µmol/L; 95% CI: 70.7-83.1 µmol/L) was significantly different than that observed in adult Greyhounds, suggesting that the 2 samples were drawn from different populations. This study provides evidence to support that the higher serum SDMA concentration in Greyhounds is a breed-related trait.

Abstract
The reference values of the serum and urine biochemical parameters have not been well-studied in donkeys. This study aimed to assess the normal values of the selected renal biomarkers, such as: serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), albumin, total protein (TP), electrolytes and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), urine protein concentration (UPC), urine protein/creatinine ratio (UPCR), the urine gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGTP)-to-creatinine ratio, serum creatinine-to-urine creatinine ratio (sCr/uCr), serum BUN-to-serum creatinine ratio (sBUN/sCr) and UPC-to-TP ratio, as well as the fractional electrolyte excretion of sodium (FENa) and potassium (FEK) in donkeys. The effects of age, gender and deep freezing of the serum material were investigated. Sixty-five healthy adult donkeys were involved in this study. The results showed higher BUN and TP values and lower albumin, UPCR, FENa and FEK levels in donkeys when compared to the reference values in horses. A significant gender relationship for creatinine and BUN was found. Age influenced the values of albumin, TP, potassium and chlorine. Potassium, sodium and SDMA did not show significant concentration changes after freezing. The study results demonstrated that horse reference range values for some parameters cannot be applied to donkey samples. Only a few of the serum parameters were not affected by freezing, and this should be taken into account when storing biological materials.

Abstract
Background: Chronic tubulointerstitial fibrosis is a common final pathway leading to end stage kidney disease in cats and has no effective treatment. The use of cell-based molecules to treat kidney fibrosis may be a promising approach. The objectives were to test the effects of intra-renal chemokine CXCL12 injection in a pre-clinical cat model of unilateral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced kidney fibrosis and then, within a clinical pilot study, test the safety/feasibility of CXCL12 injection in cats that might have early chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: Pre-clinical: Thirty cats received intra-renal injection of 100, 200, or 400 ng of recombinant human CXCL12, or sterile saline, into the I/R kidney 70 days post-injury, or were non-injured, non-injected controls (n = 6/group). Kidney collagen content was quantified 4 months post-treatment using Masson's Trichrome and Picrosirius Red (PSR) stained tissues. In a separate study (n = 2) exploring short-term effects of CXCL12, 200 ng CXCL12 was injected into I/R kidneys and then harvested either 30 min (n = 1) or 1 month (n = 1) post-injection. Kidney concentrations of CXCL12, matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), and lysyl oxidase-like enzyme 2 (LOXL-2) were quantified via ELISA. Clinical Pilot: 14 client-owned cats with potential early kidney disease received a single-treatment, bilateral intra-renal injection of 200 ng CXCL12 (n = 7), or received no injection (n = 7). Blood/urine samples were collected monthly for 9 months to assess renal function and CKD staging. Results: Pre-clinical: I/R increased the affected kidney collagen content, which both mid and high doses of CXCL12 restored to normal (ps < 0.05 vs. untreated). I/R increased collagen fiber width, which both mid and high doses of CXCL12 restored to normal (p < 0.001 vs. untreated). Early changes in kidney MMP-1, associated with collagen breakdown, and subsequent decreases in LOXL-2, associated with collagen cross-linking, in response to CXCL12 treatment may contribute to these findings. Clinical Pilot: Bilateral intra-renal injection of CXCL12 using ultrasound guidance in cats with CKD was feasible and safe in a general practice clinical setting with no obvious side effects noted during the 9-month follow-up period. Conclusions: Intra-renal injection of CXCL12 may prove to be an effective treatment for kidney fibrosis in cats with CKD. Additional mechanistic and clinical evaluations are needed.

Abstract
Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a promising renal marker that correlates well with the glomerular filtration rate and could allow earlier detection of impaired renal function. The main objectives of this study were to assess the long-term variability of SDMA in healthy dogs and examine the influence of an increased body fat percentage on the level of SDMA. Sixteen lean Beagles were randomly assigned to the control group or weight-change group in age- and gender-matched pairs. The energy intake of the control group (n = 8) was strictly regulated to maintain an ideal body weight for 83 weeks, while the weight-change group (n = 8) was fed to induce weight gain (week 0–47), to maintain stable excessive body weight (week 47–56) and to lose weight (week 56–83), consecutively. At 8 specified time points, the body condition score, body composition, glomerular filtration rate, serum concentration of SDMA and creatinine were analyzed. In the control group, the within-subject coefficient of variation, between-subject coefficient of variation, reference change value (type I error = 5%) and index of individuality were 0.16, 0.22, 0.43 and 0.73, respectively. The control group and weight-change group did not differ significantly in SDMA concentration. SDMA showed a significant negative association (coefficient = -0.07) with body fat percentage (p<0.01) in the weight-change group and a significant positive association (coefficient = 7.79) with serum creatinine (p<0.01) in the entire study population. In conclusion, SDMA concentration has high long-term stability in healthy adult dogs. For the evaluation of SDMA concentrations, subject-specific reference values are preferred over a population-based reference value seen their higher sensitivity. Moreover, an increased body fat percentage does seem to affect the serum SDMA concentration of otherwise healthy dogs, but its clinical relevance has to be clarified in further research.

Abstract
A host of novel renal biomarkers have been developed over the past few decades which have enhanced monitoring of renal disease and drug-induced kidney injury in both preclinical studies and in humans. Since chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) share similar underlying mechanisms and the tubulointerstitial compartment has a functional role in the progression of CKD, urinary biomarkers of AKI may provide predictive information in chronic renal disease. Numerous studies have explored whether the recent AKI biomarkers could improve upon the standard clinical biomarkers, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio, for predicting outcomes in CKD patients. This review is an introduction to alternative assays that can be utilized in chronic (>3 months duration) nonclinical safety studies to provide information on renal dysfunction and to demonstrate specific situations where these assays could be utilized in nonclinical drug development. Novel biomarkers such as symmetrical dimethyl arginine, dickkopf homolog 3, and cystatin C predict chronic renal injury in animals, act as surrogates for GFR, and may predict changes in GFR in patients over time, ultimately providing a bridge from preclinical to clinical renal monitoring.

Abstract
Background Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is considered a more sensitive indirect estimate of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) than creatinine (Cr). Symmetric dimethylarginine is not affected by sex or muscle mass in small animals. Objectives To validate a commercial SDMA immunoassay (IA) for equine serum; to compare SDMA and Cr in cohorts of draft horse breeds; and to assess effects of age, sex, and breed. Animals One hundred and sixty‐five healthy draft horses (0.5‐16 years), including 63 Percherons, 52 Clydesdales, and 50 Belgians. Methods Cross‐sectional study. The SDMA IA was validated for equine serum by comparison to liquid chromatography‐mass spectroscopy (LC‐MS) results and other methods. Symmetric dimethylarginine and Cr were compared by analysis of variance and correlation analysis. Results Median and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for LC‐MS (10.0 [9.4, 10.2] μg/dL) and IA (9.7 [9.5, 10.0] μg/dL) SDMA concentrations were strongly correlated (R = .74, P < .001). Symmetric dimethylarginine was lower (P < .01) in Percherons and Belgians, than in Clydesdales. Median values and 95% CI for Cr were 1.3 (1.2, 1.4), 1.4 (1.3, 1.5), and 1.4 (1.3, 1.5) mg/dL (P = .06) for Percherons, Clydesdales, and Belgians, respectively. Symmetric dimethylarginine was correlated to Cr (LC‐MS, R = .60, P < .001; IA, R = .66, P < .001). There were no differences in SDMA or Cr between sexes and there were no correlations between age and SDMA or Cr. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Although a significant breed effect on SDMA concentration was found, differences were small and all medians were <14 μg/dL, the cutoff value to support renal dysfunction in dogs and cats.

Abstract
Background Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard in assessing renal function but is impractical. Serum creatinine (sCr) has limited sensitivity in identifying early chronic kidney disease (CKD), whereas symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) has been commercialized as more accurate biomarker. Studies comparing SDMA and sCr with GFR in cats are limited. Objectives To further investigate the diagnostic performance of SDMA in nonazotemic and azotemic cats. Animals Forty‐nine client‐owned cats: 17 cats with CKD, 15 cats with diabetes mellitus (DM), and 17 healthy cats. Methods Retrospective study using spare blood samples from cats with documented sCr and GFR results for SDMA analysis. Diagnostic performances of SDMA and sCr were evaluated using correlation coefficients, sensitivities, specificities, and receiver operator characteristic curves. Results Compared to healthy cats and cats with DM, CKD cats had significantly higher SDMAplasma (26.7 ± 9.9 μg/dL) and sCr (249.7 ± 71.6 μmol/L [2.8 ± 0.8 mg/dL]; both P < .001) values. SDMAplasma (τB = −0.57; P < .001) and sCr (τB = −0.56; P < .001) were significantly correlated with GFR. SDMAplasma (τB = 0.52; P < .001) had a significant relationship with sCr. SDMAplasma and sCr had similar sensitivity (76%‐94% and 71%‐88%, respectively) in detecting reduced renal function. Creatinine had higher specificity (94%‐96%) than SDMAplasma (75%‐76%) (P < .05). Conclusion and Clinical Importance In this study of azotemic and nonazotemic cats, SDMA was a reliable marker to identify decreased GFR. However, superiority of SDMA over sCr could not be confirmed.

Abstract
Within clinical small animal practice, diagnosis of both chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury is common. To assess renal function, measurement of glomerular filtration rate is considered the gold standard. Currently, routine tests of kidney function include surrogate markers of glomerular filtration rate such as serum creatinine, and urea, each with their own limitations, whilst urine protein to creatinine ratio gives an indication of glomerular and tubular handling of protein, and urine specific gravity information about urine concentrating ability by the kidney. These parameters are used together with historical and physical examination data to give a diagnosis of kidney disease following which creatinine, proteinuria and blood pressure are used to stage chronic kidney disease and, together with urine output, grade acute kidney injury according to the International Renal Interest Society. However, there has been much concern that creatinine is insensitive when used to indicate early decline in renal function and this has highlighted the need for additional methods of diagnosing and monitoring these patients, with the potential to allow earlier therapeutic intervention. Symmetric dimethylarginine is a novel biomarker, which has been shown to perform as a surrogate marker of glomerular filtration rate in small animals. This article will review current research on symmetric dimethylarginine and the ways in which it may be utilised in small animal practice; current research supports the use of symmetric dimethylarginine as a screening test for detection of early chronic kidney disease according to International Renal Interest Society guidelines, but further research is required in to the usefulness of symmetric dimethylarginine as a tool for monitoring disease and the effect of non-renal influences.

Abstract
Cytauxzoonosis is described as an emerging tick-borne disease of domestic and wild felids caused by protozoans of the genus Cytauxzoon. While in the Americas the condition is described as a fatal disease, in Europe, reports on the clinical expression of the infection are scarce. This study describes the first case of Cytauxzoon sp. infection in Germany, in a domestic cat. A 6-year-old male domestic cat living in Saarlouis (Saarland) was presented with anorexia, lethargy and weight loss. The cat had an outdoor lifestyle and had not travelled abroad. Serum clinical chemistry analysis revealed azotaemia with markedly increased symmetric dimethylarginine, hypercreatinemia, hyperphosphatemia and hypoalbuminemia. Moreover, a mild non-regenerative anaemia was present. Approximately 1 year prior to these findings, the domestic cat was diagnosed with a feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection. These results pointed toward a decreased glomerular filtration rate, presumably as a result of kidney dysfunction. Round to oval signet ring–shaped intraerythrocytic organisms, morphologically suggestive for a piroplasm, were revealed during blood smear evaluation with a degree of parasitaemia of 33.0%. PCR analyses and sequencing of a region of the 18S rRNA gene confirmed the presence of a Cytauxzoon sp. infection, with 99–100% nucleotide sequence identity with previously published Cytauxzoon sp. isolates. As this is the first molecularly confirmed Cytauxzoon sp. infection in a domestic cat in Germany, these findings suggest that cytauxzoonosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of anaemia in outdoor domestic cats, particularly in areas where wild felid populations are present.

Abstract
Interest is growing in measurement of novel biomarkers for the diagnosis of acute kidney injury. Multiplex assays may provide a rapid and cost-effective way of measurement; however, sparse information is published regarding their use in dogs. We aimed to validate a commercial magnetic bead-based assay for 5 biomarkers: clusterin (Clus), cystatin C (CysC), kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). Intra- and inter-assay imprecision, linearity under dilution (LUD), spike recovery (S-R), and hemoglobin interference were evaluated using serum from healthy and diseased dogs. Additionally, the effect of sample type (serum vs. plasma) was investigated. All values for Clus and MCP-1 were outside the assay's measurable range. Intra- and inter-assay precision were acceptable for NGAL (CVs 8.8% and 13.2%, respectively). Regression analysis of LUD and S-R indicated good linearity for CysC and NGAL. Hemolysis did not affect measurement of any biomarker. Measured concentrations of CysC (p = 0.018) and NGAL (p = 0.015) were significantly lower in sodium citrate plasma compared to serum. We conclude that this magnetic bead-based assay is precise and accurate for NGAL measurement in canine serum. Inappropriate standards for MCP-1 and Clus, and poor accuracy for KIM-1 measurement, suggest that this assay cannot reliably quantify those biomarkers in canine blood. Measurements of CysC in canine blood using this assay must be interpreted with caution given inter-assay imprecision.

Abstract
Three different Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae) species have been described infecting domestic cats in Europe (i.e. H. felis, H. canis and H. silvestris), however, reports on clinical hepatozoonosis are uncommon and treatment protocols are not clearly defined. A six-year-old male European short-hair cat from Austria presented poor general condition, lethargy, anorexia, icterus, a painful abdomen, fever, ruffled hair and a tick infestation, and it had never left Austria. Laboratory tests revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and increased serum levels of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and bilirubin. In May Grünwald-Giemsa-stained blood smears, structures resembling Hepatozoon gamonts were observed inside neutrophil granulocytes. A PCR targeting a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of Hepatozoon spp. and DNA sequencing allowed the diagnosis of H. felis-DNA in blood samples. The cat was treated with imidocarb dipropionate (6 mg/kg body weight, repeated after 14 days) and doxycycline monohydrate (5 mg/kg body weight twice a day, p.o., for four weeks) and recovered completely. A broad haematological and biochemical laboratory control after six months showed all evaluated parameters under normal ranges. Coinfection with other feline pathogens (i.e. feline leukaemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline Coronavirus, Leishmania and Dirofilaria immitis) could not be detected. This study reveals the presence of H. felis in Austria and provides more evidence on the geographical distribution and pathogenicity of this parasite for domestic cats. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first autochthonous case of feline hepatozoonosis in Central Europe. Clinical Hepatozoon felis infection in a domestic cat was diagnosed in Austria. The diagnosis was achieved by microscopy of blood smears, PCR and DNA-sequencing. Possible coinfections with other feline pathogens were ruled-out. The cat recovered completely after treatment with imidocarb and doxycycline. This represents the first autochthonous case of feline hepatozoonosis in Central Europe.
