Abstract
Truth-telling for terminally ill patients is a challenging ethical and social issue for Chinese health care professionals. However, despite the existence of ethical and moral standards for nurses, they frequently encounter moral dilemmas when making decisions about truth-telling to patients with end-stage diseases in China. This article aims to provide ethical strategies for clinical nurses in China regarding truth-telling decisions for terminally ill patients on the basis of their individual autonomy. This article first presents a common case scenario in China and then critically discusses ethical issues related to ethical principles and philosophical theories. The aim is to provide the much needed strategy for truth-telling for nurses who are terminally ill rather than to focus on attitudes toward disclosure. This article focuses on nursing morality, ethics, norms, and philosophy in health care and discusses countermeasures taken by nurses in truth-telling decision-making in combination with Chinese Confucian culture. The analysis identifies key ethical strategies tailored to Chinese nurses' practices, emphasizing individual autonomy, cultural sensitivity, and family dynamics in truth-telling decisions. The complexity of end-of-life illness requires Chinese nurses to strengthen the communication training needed to deliver bad news, as well as critical and autonomous thinking and good communication skills when implementing patient- and family-centered care, to achieve true delivery of bad news, thereby increasing patient autonomy and promoting more successful collaboration among patients, families, and providers. To improve the quality of care. Chinese nurses should integrate ethical principles with Confucian values to enhance patient-centered communication, respecting autonomy while adapting to cultural nuances in end-of-life care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses' job satisfaction has long been a global concern because of the critical significance it holds on nurse turnover and the quality and safety of patient care. OBJECTIVES To perform an updated literature review of the newly emerging studies on job satisfaction among hospital nurses. DESIGN Literature review. DATA SOURCES Ten electronic database (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Applied Social Sciences Index, CNKI, SinoMed, CQVIP, WanFang) were searched for studies published between September 2018 and May 2024. REVIEW METHODS Studies were included if they published in English or Chinese and focused on job satisfaction of qualified general nurses working in acute care hospitals. Data extraction, synthesis and content analysis were performed. RESULTS Of the 28,584 studies originally identified, 52 studies were included in the final review. Thirty-eight influencing factors and twenty-nine predictors of nurses' job satisfaction across the domains of demographic characteristics, individual cognition and behaviors, and working environment and management were newly added in this updated review. Sixty-five factors, which were further grouped into eight subcategorizations: demographic characteristics, personality traits, emotion, behaviors, psychological and cognitive factors, organizational climate, leadership and management, were additionally identified as related factors of nurses' job satisfaction. Factors relating to nurses' individual cognition and behaviors mainly played mediating roles in the mediating pathways linking various factors with job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS This review provides improved understanding of nurses' job satisfaction. Future studies could further explore the mechanisms by which factors relating to working environment and management predict or affect nurses' job satisfaction. The newly identified intrinsic factors from the mediating or moderating pathways offered valuable intervention insights for the improvement of nurses' job satisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesise scientific evidence on interprofessional practice in hospital care and the effects on nursing workload. METHODS Systematic mixed method review, registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021225627) and conducted in the following databases: CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus, with no restrictions on the publication period of the studies. Primary studies were recruited on nurses' interprofessional practice (actions and interactions with other professional categories) in hospitals and the effects on one or more dimensions of nursing workload (quantitative, qualitative, physical, cognitive, emotional, time and variation). Scientific articles available in open access, in English, Spanish or Portuguese, were included. The searches were carried out in January 2021. The studies were evaluated by pairs of independent researchers to verify methodological quality, through the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool, and data extraction. To summarise the studies, thematic analysis was adopted. RESULTS A total of 1774 publications were assessed for eligibility and 17 studies were included. Of these, two were mixed methods, four were qualitative, and 11 were quantitative, published between 2011 and 2020. The main scenarios investigated were Intensive Care Units and/or Inpatient Units. During data analysis, three thematic categories emerged: Interprofessional practice in coping with emotional overload; Time dedicated by nurses to professional communication; and Working conditions and patient care. The third category consisted of three subthemes: Conflict and flexibility in the context of practice; Working conditions and interprofessional practice; and Effects on patient care. CONCLUSIONS The evidence points to the emotional overload of nurses in the face of uncooperative practices. Interprofessional actions, especially communicative ones, demand nurses' time and impact the care provided. The results contribute to political decisions and health work management.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to explore challenges faced by clinical nurses in the process of implementing medical orders. DESIGN A qualitative study using inductive content analysis. METHODS Semi-structured individual interviews were carried out with 17 participants including nurses, nurse managers and medical doctors who were purposefully selected. The collected data underwent inductive qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The main research finding was the category of 'unsafe doctor-nurse interaction'. It included three subcategories: 'conflicts in documenting and executing orders', 'not accepting the nurse's suggestions for writing and correcting orders' and 'failure to accept the responsibility of orders by the doctor'. Challenges in the professional relationship between doctors and nurses cause mistrust and conflict. They also enhance nurses' concerns about professional and legal issues in the workplace and endanger patient safety.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the properties of a reduced-item Healthcare Environment Survey measuring nurses' job satisfaction across eight countries. BACKGROUND There is currently no rigorously tested international measure of nurses' job satisfaction that can be used internationally to improve the nurse work environment. METHODS Nursing staff from 11 hospitals in eight countries participated in this study. The original 57-item, 11-facet Healthcare Environment Survey was evaluated for reliability, validity, and measurement invariance: Cronbach's alpha was used to test for reliability; construct, discriminate, and convergent testing were used to test validity; and invariance testing including configural, metric, and scalar tests were used to study measurement invariance between the countries. RESULTS 2,046 nursing staff completed the survey. Reliability was established for all six subscales and the combined composite score. Both validity and measurement invariance were supported in every test conducted. An excellent model fit was found for the final 19-item, 6-facet Healthcare Environment Survey that explained 82% of the variance of nurses' job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest the instrument is an efficient measure of nurses' job satisfaction across multiple countries. Longitudinal testing for invariance will be needed to ensure the model remains a good fit. Testing more countries will also verify model fit. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING The instrument can be used to measure nurse job satisfaction globally. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY The instrument can be used to assess interventions to improve the social (patient, unit manager, and coworker) and technical (professional rewards, autonomy, and professional growth) aspects of nurse job satisfaction.

Abstract
Despite extensive research having been carried out on nurse-physician collaboration, there remains a paucity of evidence on how collaboration interacts with organizational commitment and its effect on turnover intention. This study aims to determine the mediating role of nurse-physician collaboration on the effect of organizational commitment on turnover intention. We used a cross-sectional design based on voluntary paper surveys from the inpatient clinics of six public hospitals in the north of Turkey. Data including measures of nurse-physician collaboration, organizational commitment, and turnover intention were collected from a convenience sample of the nurses (n = 212) and physicians (n = 109). Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between variables, and the mediating effect was analyzed with PROCESS Macro "Model 4" for IBM SPSS. Statistical significance was specified at 95% confidence intervals and two-tailed P values of <0.05 for all tests. While most of the participants were nurses (66%), 34% were physicians. For both nurses and physicians, organizational commitment and nurse-physician collaboration negatively affected the turnover intention. However, the mediating role of nurse-physician collaboration was only significant for nurses (b = -0.025). The results demonstrate the importance of harmony, joint decision-making, and responsibility-sharing between nurses and physicians concerning dedication, engagement, and job satisfaction, especially for nurses.

Abstract
Background Registered nurses in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are working under stressful environment caused by the need and commitment to provide care for the critically ill neonates. Therefore, there is an imperative need to know and understand the work-related support strategies that can be adapted for registered nurses working in a NICU in the Tshwane District to enable them to provide quality care for the admitted neonates. Aim To explore and describe the work-related support needs of registered nurses working in a specific NICU situated in the Tshwane District. Setting The study was conducted in a selected NICU in Tshwane District. Method A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design was used in this study. In-depth unstructured individual face-to-face interviews were conducted with nine registered nurses working at the selected NICU of an academic hospital. Thematic data analysis was conducted. Results Three themes, namely teamwork between registered nurses and doctors, staff development in the form of peer seminars, workshops and in-service training, and availability of adequate resources within the workplace arose. Conclusion This study revealed that the registered nurses working in the NICU in the Tshwane District are in need of work-related support, as it will improve their well-being. Contribution The contribution of this study will be used by the hospital management to plan strategies that can be adapted for the betterment of the work environment for registered nurses in the NICU and the hospital in general.

Abstract
We aimed to reveal the attitudes and perceptions of a group of nurses toward collaborative work and the barriers to collaborative practice. At the end of the study, we obtained four main themes: leadership in health services, interpersonal interaction factors, cooperation in patient care, standardization. The nurses emphasized the critical elements of respect, relationships and communication as components of effective collaborative practice. As a result, it was stated that the practice of cooperation between doctors and nurses is weak and there are some difficulties and obstacles.

Abstract
Introduction Nurse–physician collaboration is an integral part of quality improvement in health care. Collaboration enables individuals to work together to achieve defined and common health purposes. There is limited evidence related to nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration and its associated factors in Ethiopia, particularly in Dessie city public hospitals. Objective To assess nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration and associated factors at public hospitals in Dessie city, Ethiopia, 2021. Methods An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses and physicians at public hospitals in Dessie city. A self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Stratified simple random sampling techniques were used to select study participants proportional to the sample size allocation. The final sample size was 260 and allocated proportionally to Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Boru Meda General Hospital. The data were entered and analyzed using EPI-data version 4.6 and SPSS version 26 software respectively. During analysis, p-values less than 0.25 in binary logistic regression were entered into multivariable logistic regression. Finally, p-values less than 0.05 in multi-variable logistic regression were considered statically significant. Results The mean score for inter-professional collaboration was 97.40 ± 19.6SD. In this study, inter-professional collaboration among nurses and physicians was 44.2%. This study showed that favorable attitude [AOR=3.205; CI: 1.781–5.766], respondents working in the gynecological department [AOR=0.210; CI: 0.052–0.849], satisfied organizational support [AOR=2.062; CI: 1.140–3.729] and urban residents [AOR=3.996; CI: 1.069–14.931] were factors associated with nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration. Conclusion In this study, nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration was low. Training on the importance of health teamwork, timely monitoring and evaluation of organizational support, and professional empowerment towards a favorable attitude of nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration shall be provided at hospital levels. Routine assessment and timely intervention of the gynecological department for nurse–physician inter-professional collaboration shall be done at hospital levels. Moreover, both quantitative and qualitative research shall be performed for future research.

Abstract
Background. Operating rooms are among the most complex clinical environments in hospitals where teamwork and professional communication play a very important part. Professional commitment is an influential factor in the personnel’s professional communication and can affect the outcomes of healthcare services. Objective. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between professional communication and professional commitment in the operating room nurses in teaching hospitals. Study Design. The present study used a descriptive-correlational design. Participants were selected via census sampling from hospitals in Shiraz over a period of three months. The participants were 350 operating room nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using professional communication and a professional commitment questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS
v. 22. Findings. The operating room nurses’ mean scores for professional communication (136.81 ± 13.77) and professional commitment (71.42 ± 11.62) were found to be high. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficient test showed that there was a statistically significant linear relationship between professional communication and professional commitment (
, r = 0.235). The results also showed that there was a significant relationship between professional commitment on the one hand and gender (
), marital status (
), and interest in work (
) on the other hand. There was also a significant relationship between professional communication and interest in work (
). Conclusion. Given the significance of professional communication and professional commitment in the operating rooms, it is recommended that healthcare administrators and policymakers take steps to improve these areas. It is suggested that measures should be taken to increase the personnel’s awareness of the principles of professional communication and the significance of professional commitment through regular workshops.

Abstract
The study aimed to explore the conditions that accompany conflict of conscience experienced by nurses in intensive care units. A qualitative approach guided the study, which was undertaken between April 2020 and April 2021. A total of 15 registered nurses working in intensive care units were recruited through purposive sampling. Individual semistructured interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. The analysis revealed two themes: "conflict of conscience in relation to the structure" and "conflict of conscience based on context." Conflict of conscience in relation to the structure consisted of two categories: conflict of interest and conflict of conscience and law. Conflict of conscience based on context consisted of two categories: care dilemmas and arbitrary behaviors with end-stage patients. A variety of factors were accompanied by a conflict of conscience for nurses in intensive care units. Given that conflict of conscience has negative consequences for the health and quality of nursing care, health care managers need to tailor strategies to reduce the negative consequences considering the findings of the study.

Abstract
Introduction Compassionate care is considered as the main part of the nurses’ identity and a core component of nursing care. One clinical environment where patients experience a lot of pain and nurses play a vital role in delivering care is the intensive care unit (ICU). Objective Considering the importance of compassionate care in intensive care units, this study aimed to assess the relationship between the work environment and nurses’ compassion in intensive care units. Methods In this cross-sectional survey, a total of 235 nurses were randomly selected from the intensive care units of four educational hospitals of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences from January to March 2021. Data were collected by demographic questionnaire, the Sussex-Oxford Compassion for Others Scale (SOCS-O) and the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI). Results The results showed that there was a significant and inverse relationship between the patient per nurse ratio and the mean score of nurses’ compassion (P < .05). Moreover, Pearson correlation coefficient showed that the mean total score of the nursing work index had a significant positive relationship with the mean score of the compassion for others (r = 0.16, P = .016). Conclusion Health care managers and leaders should pay more attention to the promotion of nurses’ working environments and they should remove the organizational barriers of compassionate care delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As an important organisational feature, the nurse work environment has been associated with increased work effectiveness, reduced patient safety issues and improved care quality. However, the mechanism underlying this association remains unexplored. AIM This study aims to assess the mediating role of interprofessional collaboration in the relationships between nurse work environment, select patient safety outcomes and job satisfaction. METHODS This cross-sectional, descriptive study used five standardized scales and included 881 clinical nurses employed in select teaching hospitals in Oman. RESULTS Nurses who worked in teaching hospitals in Oman perceived their work environment as highly favourable. Nurse work environment was directly and indirectly associated with nurse-assessed quality of care, adverse patient events and job satisfaction, through interprofessional collaborations. CONCLUSION Findings of the study suggest that enhancing nurse work environments can be a potential strategy to foster interprofessional collaboration and improve job satisfaction and patient safety outcomes. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Organisational strategies to improve patient safety outcomes and job satisfaction in nurses can be facilitated by improving nurses' work conditions and enhancing interprofessional collaboration through supportive leadership, theory-driven approaches, obtaining hospital accreditation/certification and relevant workplace policies.

Abstract
Background Evidence reflects that effective collaboration leads to improved care quality, patient satisfaction, nurse and physician retention, as well as decreased length of stay, readmissions, and costs. While interprofessional collaboration is widely accepted as the gold standard for health care, room for improvement exists within the nurse–physician relationship. Purpose To evaluate the impact of a shadowing experience on nursing and resident perceptions of communication and collaboration through a shared clinical experience in providing direct patient care. Methods From 2016 to 2020, the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program and Medical-Surgical Nursing Department collaborated to pair all internal medicine residents with a nurse preceptor for a 12-hour shift, where participants worked side-by-side in providing patient care. A total of 148 residents and 75 nurse preceptors participated in the study and were provided with a checklist of nursing activities as a guideline. Both residents and nurses completed a questionnaire regarding the shadowing experience utilizing a 5-point Likert scale, with questions focusing on collaboration and communication, program value, and impact on practice. Results The study found increases in resident communication with nurses from pre-intervention to post-intervention, as well as enjoyment of collaboration with nurses and understanding of the nurse’s role. Residents believed that the program should be included for all residents at the beginning of their training; similarly, nurses advocated for the program, believing that the program would improve physician–nurse communication and collaboration. Conclusion Interprofessional training through a Nurse-for-a-Day Program may strengthen nurse–resident relations by cultivating understanding essential for effective collaboration through mutual role understanding.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to test the hypothesis model showing the relationship between nurses' individual and working characteristics, nursing work environment, subjective career success, job satisfaction, intent to leave, and professional commitment. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional and correlational design was utilized for the study. The study sample consisted of 604 nurses working in four hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey. Data were collected using the Nurse Information Form, Subjective Career Success Inventory, Practice Work Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, Job Satisfaction Global Item, Intent to Leave Subscale, and Professional Commitment Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlation analysis, and the hypothesis model was tested using structural equation modeling. FINDINGS The hypothesis model that was established to test the antecedents and outcomes of subjective career success in nurses was acceptable and had a good fit. Having a master's degree, work schedule with rotating shifts (negative), good individual income, participation in hospital affairs, staffing and resource adequacy, and nurse-physician relations were significantly associated with the subjective career success of nurses. Subjective career success had a positive effect on job satisfaction and professional commitment and a negative significant effect on intent to leave in nurses. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that human capital, objective career success, and some characteristics of the nursing work environment were significantly associated with nurses' subjective career success, and that increased subjective career success produced positive professional and organizational outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The results of this study, which revealed the antecedents and outcomes of nurses' career success, should be taken into consideration by managers who wish to retain a qualified nursing workforce.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Collaboration between physicians and nurses is critical. However, a limited number of studies have provided insights into the status of physician-nurse collaboration in truth disclosure. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an electronic questionnaire among Chinese nurses who attended a provincial conference. The Nurse-Physician Collaboration Scale was administered to nurses to assess the collaboration in truth disclosure from their perspective. A multiple-choice question was asked to assess the perceived difficulties in truth disclosure. Descriptive statistics, univariate, and multiple stepwise regression analyses were performed to evaluate physician-nurse collaboration in truth disclosure. RESULTS A total of 287 nurses completed the survey, and 279 of them reported that they had carried out truth disclosures among patients. The average score for physician-nurse collaboration in truth disclosure was 3.98 ± 0.72. The majority of nurses (73.1-81%) responded positively to different dimensions of collaboration in truth disclosure. The results of multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that seniority (B = - 0.111, 95% confidence interval [CI] = - 0.167-- 0.055, p < 0.001) and frequency of truth disclosure (B = 0.162, 95%CI = 0.076-0.249, p < 0.001) were the only two factors associated with collaboration in truth disclosure between physicians and nurses. The most common barrier perceived by nurses was fear of patients' negative emotions or their suicide attempts after truth telling. CONCLUSIONS Most nurses responded positively to physician-nurse collaboration in truth disclosure. Various difficulties existed in the practice of truth-telling collaboration. Further studies are required to test the potential interventions to promote cooperation between nurses and physicians in truth disclosure.
