Evaluation of Efficacy and Safety of EstroG-100® in Alleviating Menopausal Symptoms in Postmenopausal Women in India: A Prospective, Single-center, Single-arm, Interventional Study

Background

Menopause is a natural stage in a woman's life marked by the cessation of menstrual periods. Common symptoms include hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal discomfort, among others. These climacteric symptoms lead to a compromised quality of life affecting physical, biological, psychological, and social well-being. There are concerns with long-term clinical use of Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and alternative therapies that are devoid of adverse risks are required. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EstroG-100®, containing a mixture of standardized extracts of Cynanchum wilfordii, Phlomis umbrosa, and Angelica gigas, on menopausal symptoms and its impact on quality of life.

Methodology

This was a prospective, single-center, single-arm, interventional study. Sixty female subjects, with confirmed menopause and moderate-to-severe symptoms, were enrolled and treated with EstroG-100® twice daily, for 12 weeks. Improvement in the climacteric symptoms was evaluated using the Menopause Rating Scale-11 and Menopause Symptoms Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (MS-TSQ). All the results were evaluated by the SPSS software version 23.0.

Results

A significant improvement was noticed in the somatic, urogenital, and psychological climacteric symptoms from baseline to 6 weeks (P = 0.001) and a highly significant improvement after 12 weeks (P = 0.0001) of treatment. 96.5% of patients were satisfied with the treatment outcome evaluated by the MS-TSQ. No changes in blood pressure and body mass index were reported. No side effects were reported during the study.

Conclusion

The first study of EstroG-100® in Indian menopausal women demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in climacteric symptoms. A 12-week treatment proved safe and effective in enhancing postmenopausal women's quality of life. The remedy was well-tolerated and effectively alleviated menopausal symptoms.

Extracts Rich in Nutrients as Novel Food Ingredients to Be Used in Food Supplements: A Proposal Classification

Consumers’ commitment to healthy lifestyles and a varied diet has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, causing an increase in the demand of better food quality and variety. The food industry has opted for innovation and the search for new sources of food, and these trends led to the need to develop a European regulatory framework. Novel foods are under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 (formerly Regulation (EC) No 258/97), and this concept includes all food not used in an important measure for human consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997, and which is included in any of the food categories established. Currently, there are 26 extracts authorized as novel foods or ingredients, being one of the most numerous groups. These extracts are concentrated sources of nutrients, and 23 of them can be used in food supplements. Given their heterogeneous composition and the perceptive risk assessments performed, sometimes, the authorizations are limited to certain population groups. The present work is a comprehensive review of the extracts rich in nutrients authorized as novel ingredients to be used in food supplements within the EU. A classification is proposed according to their source of origin, resulting in four main groups: extracts of plant, animal, algae, and fungal origins. A description of each extract as well as the evaluation of the potential use restriction and health benefits are also addressed.

Phlomoides umbrosa (Turcz.) Kamelin & Makhm: A review of its traditional uses, botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology and clinical research

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Phlomoides umbrosa (Turcz.) Kamelin & Makhm (P. umbrosa, Lamiaceae) is also known as "Caosu" in China and "Han Sok-Dan" in Korea. It has been used as a traditional medicine for hundreds of years. This plant is not only as a traditional medicine to alleviate diseases such as colds, arthritis, osteoporosis, but also as a food additive.

AIM OF THE STUDY

This review provides up-to-date investigations of this plant, including its botany, traditional uses, pharmacology, phytochemistry, clinical research, cytotoxicity, and safety evaluation. The possible purposes and perspectives for future research of P. umbrosa are also discussed.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Information on the studies of P. umbrosa is collected from scientific journals and reports via library and electronic data search (PubMed, Baidu Academic, Google Scholar, Science Direct, ACS, Web of Science, and CNKI). Meanwhile, it is also obtained from published works of folk records, ethnopharmacological literature, Ph.D. and Masters Dissertation.

RESULTS

Phytochemical research reveals that this plant contains triterpenoids, iridoids, phenylethanoids, flavonoids, essential oil, microelement, etc. The extract of P. umbrosa exhibits extensive pharmacological activities including anti-osteoporosis, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer. Almost no obvious toxicity or side effects is observed and recorded for P. umbrosa.

CONCLUSIONS

This review summarizes traditional uses, botany, pharmacology, phytochemistry, clinical research, cytotoxicity, and safety evaluation of P. umbrosa, and presents the constituents and their corresponding chemical structures found in P. umbrosa comprehensively for the first time. Meanwhile, modern pharmacological studies also are extensively investigated at present. It is worth mentioning that P. umbrosa promotes children's growth as well as the application of clinical research. Although there are clinical studies on P. umbrosa, its pharmacokinetics needs to be further elucidated. Besides, P. umbrosa is also limited in identifying active compounds and clarifying pharmacological mechanisms. Similarly, modern researches on the traditional application of P. umbrosa should also be urgently confirmed, such as treatment of fractures and hemostasis. It is believed that this review will provide a theoretical basis and valuable data for future in-depth research and application.
