Abstract
This article aims to analyze the differences between the prevalence of risk factors of non-communicable chronic disease by race/color. It is a cross-sectional study using data from a telephone survey of 45,448 adults. Prevalence ratios for chronic disease risk factors by race/color were calculated. After adjustments were made for education and income, race/color differences persisted. Among afro-descendant and mulatto women and mulatto men a higher prevalence ratio was identified of physical activity at work and physical activity at home. Afro-descendant women and mulatto men indulged in less physical inactivity. Mulatto men and women showed a lower prevalence of smoking and consumption of 20 cigarettes daily and lower consumption of fruit and vegetables. A higher consumption of full-fat milk with and beans was observed among afro-descendant and mulatto men. Afro-descendant women had a lower prevalence of drinking and driving. Afro-descendant women and men ate more meat with fat and afro-descendant men suffered more from hypertension. Differences in risk factors by race/color can be explained by cultural aspects, by not fully adjustable socioeconomic differences that determine less access to goods and less opportunities for the afro-descendant population.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate the spatial distribution of work accident risk in the informal work market in the urban zone of an industrialized city in southeast Brazil and to examine concomitant effects of age, gender, and type of occupation after controlling for spatial risk variation. The basic methodology adopted was that of a population-based case-control study with particular interest focused on the spatial location of work. Cases were all casual workers in the city suffering work accidents during a one-year period; controls were selected from the source population of casual laborers by systematic random sampling of urban homes. The spatial distribution of work accidents was estimated via a semiparametric generalized additive model with a nonparametric bidimensional spline of the geographical coordinates of cases and controls as the nonlinear spatial component, and including age, gender, and occupation as linear predictive variables in the parametric component. We analyzed 1,918 cases and 2,245 controls between 1/11/2003 and 31/10/2004 in Piracicaba, Brazil. Areas of significantly high and low accident risk were identified in relation to mean risk in the study region (p < 0.01). Work accident risk for informal workers varied significantly in the study area. Significant age, gender, and occupational group effects on accident risk were identified after correcting for this spatial variation. A good understanding of high-risk groups and high-risk regions underpins the formulation of hypotheses concerning accident causality and the development of effective public accident prevention policies.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the number of occupational accidents that occurred in a certain municipality during a specific period of time as well as the extent of sub-registration. METHODS The study sample was comprised of 4.782 households within the municipality of Botucatu, São Paulo occupied by a total 17,219 inhabitants on the 1st of July, 1997. In each household, an adult inhabitant was interviewed in order to identify the occurrence of occupational accidents in the three months preceding the interview. When such occurrences were identified, the injured workers were interviewed. The Cochran formula was utilized to calculate the confidence interval. RESULTS Seventy-six individuals confirmed that they had suffered occupational accidents during these three months. In 1997, there were approximately 1,810 occupational accidents in Botucatu, according to our estimates, and the incidence of work related injuries in the population was approximately 4.1% (CI 95% 3.0%-5.3%). Thirty-nine (51.3%, CI 95% 41.1%61.6%) of the above 76 workers were not covered by the Social Security System. Consequently, their injuries were not reported for there was no legally binding obligation to fill out and emit the official registration form - Comunicação de Acidente do Trabalho (CAT) [the work injury report]. Included among the latter are civil servants and informal sector workers, such as self-employed, casual workers and others. Although the remaining 37 workers (48.7%) were covered by the Social Security System and emission of the work injury report was obligatory, 20 of the cases (54.1% CI 95% 39.4%-68.7%) had not been registered. A greater proportion of cases of sub-registration were found among those workers employed in micro, small and medium sized businesses than among those working in large firms. Only 22.4% (CI 13.8%-30.9%) of the occupational accidents reported in this study were registered by the Social Security System. CONCLUSIONS Research findings confirm that analyses based on the number of officially registered workplace accidents are limited. It highlights the importance of utilizing other sources of data, besides the registration form for occupational accidents used currently by the Social Security System, Comunicação de Acidente do Trabalho or CAT, in order to elaborate official statistics on occupational accidents.

Abstract
The aim of this observational study was to estimate the survival function and risk of death in Botucatu, Southeast Brazil, by occupation. The occupational history of inhabitants of Botucatu who died after their 10th birthday from January 1, 1997, to March 31, 1998, was analyzed, as were the occupational histories of workers' spouses. A total of 992 subjects were studied. Data were analyzed by fitting a proportional hazards model where the time variable was age at death or at time of interview and the main co-variable was occupation. Results showed that risk of death increased consistently as the level of occupational specialization decreased, displaying a 12-year increase in life expectancy for professional as compared to unskilled workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Occupational studies often use data obtained from proxy respondents. However, few investigations have been conducted on the validity of occupational data provided by workers' surrogates. This study aimed to compare self-reported occupational data to information obtained from next-of-kin, as a contribution to assess the validity of using proxy respondents to obtain information about workers. METHODS Worker/next-of-kin pairs, residents in Southeastern Brazil, were interviewed separately in 1998 about worker's occupational past history. The concordance, sensitivity, and specificity of proxy reports about workers' occupations were examined comparing to self-reports. RESULTS A total of 2.163 worker/next-of-kin pairs were interviewed. The Kappa statistic for the agreement between worker's and next-of-kin's report about the worker's main occupation was 0.86 (CI95%; 0.85 - 0.88). The sensitivity of proxy reports on occupations ranged from 77.5% (64.6% - 90.4%) to 98.9% (97.3% - 100.0%), and specificity ranged from 96. 9% (96.0% - 97.7%) to 99.9% (99.7% - 100.0%). CONCLUSIONS These are encouraging findings for the use of proxy respondents in occupational studies when occupations are considered as categorical variables. However, caution is required when assessing occupational exposition by means of cumulative work time because next-of-kin may underestimates this information.
