Abstract
Cardiovascular involvement in Leishmania sp. infections still requires further elucidation, with cutaneous and organic changes being more frequently observed. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of cardiovascular involvement in dogs with canine visceral leishmaniasis, considering a publication span of over 80 years. A bibliographic search focused on canine visceral leishmaniasis and cardiovascular involvement via the descriptors "leishmaniasis," "heart," and "dogs" from 1940 to 2024. An analysis of over 80 years of published documents was performed across four databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Portal Capes. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were predetermined to ensure proper triage, considering documents that described cardiovascular involvement in canine visceral leishmaniasis. Initially, 250 documents were identified via the specified descriptors. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 29 articles were deemed eligible. Most studies were dated from 2005 to 2024. Histopathological analysis of heart samples was performed in nearly 20 studies. The animals evaluated were over 6 months old, with Leishmania infantum being the most frequently described species. Cardiovascular alterations were observed from electrophysiological, echocardiographic, and histopathological/immunohistochemical perspectives and in biomarker concentrations. Canine visceral leishmaniasis has extensive dissemination potential, emphasizing the need for veterinary and epidemiological surveillance services to monitor the spatial/temporal patterns of this disease. Cases of myocarditis with inflammatory infiltrates were documented in all reviewed studies. Routine cardiovascular evaluation should be integrated into the assessment and monitoring of canine visceral leishmaniasis, considering clinical, laboratory, and imaging evidence of cardiovascular alterations.

Abstract
Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) caused by Leishmania infantum is a prevalent vector-borne disease in the Mediterranean region, notably Algeria. This research aims to assess the epidemiology and the clinical management practices of CanL employed by veterinarians in the Skikda and Constantine regions in the northeastern part of Algeria. A retrospective survey comprising 37 open and closed questions was distributed to 139 veterinary clinics between 2022 and 2023. The objective was to collect comparable epidemiological information on clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, treatment protocols, preventive strategies, and awareness of the disease's public health implications. The findings from this study have revealed a notable prevalence of CanL in both regions, accompanied by similar clinical manifestations. Serological techniques, particularly rapid detection kits, are predominantly utilized alongside direct methods, while euthanasia remains the primary approach to combat the disease. The results show that only a few veterinarians educate pet owners about zoonotic diseases and prevention measures (32,79 %), while most do not provide this information. This investigation sheds more light on the current status of CanL in the selected studied area and suggests the need for standardizing diagnosis and treatment of CanL using evidence-based medicine criteria to enhance disease management. This will provide a proper way of conducting a more comprehensive epidemiological assessment of the condition for improving the handling and management of CanL in Algeria.

Abstract
In endemic areas for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), the occurrence of coinfection with other pathogens, such as Ehrlichia spp., has been associated with worsening of the clinical condition. The study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of histological changes in the myocardia of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania chagasi with or without coinfection with Ehrlichia spp.. We evaluated paraffin-embedded myocardial sections from 31 dogs, affected by either L. chagasi alone or coinfected with L. chagasi and Ehrlichia spp., to compare the extent and degree of cardiac damage. The blocks were divided into two groups. G1 (dogs infected only by L. chagasi) and G2 (dogs coinfected with L. chagasi and Ehrlichia spp.). The right atrium free wall, right ventricle free wall, left ventricle, and interventricular septum of all groups were evaluated. Cardiac alterations were observed in 41.93% (52/124) of the fragments evaluated and inflammatory infiltrate was the most common pattern found. The G2 group showed a higher incidence of myocarditis, with 61.53% (32/52), compared to the G1 group, in which 20 out of 72 cases (27.7%) exhibited histopathological changes (p <0.05). These findings confirmed that coinfection can potentiate cardiac damage in dogs.

Abstract
Pulmonary loborraphy can be performed using manual sutures and staples, although other methods, such as tissue adhesives, are also cited in the veterinary literature. Although the surgery is well tolerated in the canine species, failure in pulmonary aerostasis is still a reality since all the methods described so far eventually lead to air leakage after the use of the partial lobectomy technique in the lungs. Within this context, the aim of this research was to compare the effectiveness of different hermetic sealing methods after partial lobectomy of the right caudal lung lobe (RCLL) in dogs. 30 cadavers models were divided in 6 groups: G1-cobbler suture associated with simple continuous; G2-overlapping continuous suture associated with simple continuous suture; G3-Ford interlocking suture; G4-Stapling device; G5-Tissue glue (cyanoacrylate). After performing the sealing techniques, the lungs were submerged in water and inflated with oxygen at positive ventilatory pressures at physiological (up to 14.7 mmHg, which is equivalent to up to 20 cmH2O) and supraphysiological levels (above 14.7 mmHg) to evaluate the performance of the sealing methods. At physiological ventilatory pressure levels, there was no difference between groups. Sealing with surgical glue was superior to interlocking sutures and stapling devices at supraphysiological levels of ventilatory pressure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myocarditis frequently occurs in canine leishmaniosis (CanL). Heart fatty acid-binding protein (HFABP) is a biomarker of myocardial damage. METHODS This study aimed to compare HFABP concentration (HFABPc) in healthy dogs and dogs at different stages of CanL and evaluate the correlation of this biomarker with several clinicopathological and echocardiographic variables. Thirty-one dogs diagnosed with CanL and 10 healthy dogs were included. RESULTS HFABPc was not statistically different (p > 0.05) between groups of dogs at different LeishVet stages of CanL or between groups with high versus low to intermediate serology titres. In 70% of CanL dogs, HFABPc was within the 95% confidence interval limits of the mean of healthy dogs. A moderate negative correlation with globulin (r = -0.519; p = 0.03) and haematocrit (HCT) (r = -0.538; p = 0.02) was observed. No other significant correlation (p > 0.05) was observed with any other variable. LIMITATIONS Many statistical tests were performed, and therefore, type I error cannot be ruled out. CONCLUSION HFABPc is not consistently elevated in dogs with CanL and is not associated with the severity of the disease, or most echocardiographic or clinicopathological variables studied. The correlation with globulin and HCT was not strong and not considered clinically significant. HFABPc lacks sufficient predictive capacity in dogs with CanL, discouraging further research or clinical use of this biomarker in this disease.

Abstract
Clinical manifestations from the lower respiratory tract are rare in canine leishmaniosis (CanL), making bronchoscopy and lung fine-needle aspiration (FNA) seldomly justified. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the involvement of Leishmania infantum in the lungs of dogs with naturally occurring CanL by bronchoscopy and examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), bronchial mucosa biopsies, and FNA, using immunodiagnostics. Dogs with relevant concurrent diseases and azotemia were excluded. Cough was detected in 5/31 (16.1%) dogs. Lesions (hyperemia, edema, mucosal granularity, secretions) were identified upon bronchoscopy in 19/31 (61.3%) dogs. The cytology of BALF revealed histiocytic inflammation in 14/31 (45.2%) dogs; the parasite was identified in one dog (3.2%). The immunofluorescence antibody test in BALF was positive in 15/31 (48.4%) dogs. Histopathology of bronchial mucosa and/or adjacent alveoli revealed lesions (mononuclear cell infiltration, fibrosis, edema, thickening of the inter-alveolar septa) in 24/31 (77.4%) dogs, with no Leishmania amastigotes. Positive antigen staining was observed within the cytoplasm of mononuclear cells in immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Μononuclear cells showed antigenic positivity in bronchial mucosa (27/31; 87.1%), BALF (30/31; 96.8%), and lung FNA (27/31; 87.1%). In conclusion, lungs seem to be affected from CanL more commonly than previously believed, and bronchoscopy allows obtaining valuable samples for antemortem diagnosis.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a risk factor for developing visceral leishmaniasis and its severe forms. Our group demonstrated that malnourished animals infected with Leishmania infantum had severe atrophies in lymphoid organs and T cell subpopulations as well as altered levels of thymic and splenic chemotactic factors, all of which resulted in dysfunctional lymphoid microenvironments that promoted parasite proliferation. Here, we hypothesize that malnutrition preceding parasite infection leads to structural and immunological changes in the gut mucosae, resulting in a failure in the immune response sensed in the intestine. To evaluate this, we analyzed the immunopathological events resulting from protein malnutrition in the guts of BALB/c mice infected with L. infantum. We observed lymphocytic/lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrates and lymphoid hyperplasia in the duodenum of well-nourished-infected mice; such alterations were worsened when malnutrition preceded infection. Parasite infection induced a significant increase of duodenal immunoglobulin A (IgA) of well-nourished animals, but those levels were significantly decreased in malnourished-infected mice. In addition, increased levels of Th17-related cytokines in duodenums of malnourished animals supported local inflammation. Together, our results suggest that the gut plays a potential role in responses to L. infantum infection—and that such responses are impaired in malnourished individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between myocardial parasitic load (MPL) and cardiac biomarkers in Canine Leishmaniasis (CanL) has not been studied. METHODS Dogs with advanced CanL were prospectively recruited and were included if they were euthanised. Prior to euthanasia these variables were assessed: hematocrit, globulin, creatinine, N-terminal-pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), blood pressure, urine protein/creatinine ratio and echocardiographic parameters. A left ventricular (LV) sample was taken for histopathology and MPL evaluation by quantitative PCR. Correlation of MPL with all variables was analysed. Dogs with lower and higher histopathology scores were compared. RESULTS Ten dogs were included. NT-proBNP was 6946 pmol/ (interquartile range [IQR] 3751-9268 pmol/L) and cTnI 4.56 ng/mL (IQR 0.46-13.1 ng/mL). In all dogs, echocardiography showed an increase in LV thickening, and histopathology revealed moderate to severe lympho-plasmocytic myocarditis and/or myocardial cell degeneration. MPL was 215.53 parasites/gram (IQR 21.2-1372.63 parasites/gram). A strong correlation (p < 0.001; R = 0.90; R2 0.81) with cTnI was observed but correlation with any of the other variables or differences between the two histopathological scores, were not detected. CONCLUSIONS MPL in dogs with advanced CanL shows variable but generally high levels. A strong association between MPL and cTnI was observed, which encourages the exploration of cTnI as a marker in CanL.

Abstract
A 4-year-old crossbreed dog presented with a two-day history of lethargy and abdominal effusion. Physical examination and echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was performed. Intracytoplasmic Leishmania amastigotes were found on cytological examination of the pericardial fluid. The animal was treated with N-methylglucamine antimoniate and allopurinol. After an initial favorable response, cardiac tamponade reoccurred one month later. The dog died during a pericardiectomy four months after the initial diagnosis. Histology confirmed the presence of chronic pericarditis. The presence of Leishmania amastigotes on cytological examination of pericardial effusion suggests a possible association between canine leishmaniasis and chronic pericarditis. This finding also supports the importance of cytological examination of pericardial fluid in areas endemic for canine leishmaniasis.

Abstract
Myocarditis associated with infectious diseases may occur in dogs, including those caused by the protozoa Neospora caninum, Trypanosoma cruzi, Babesia canis, and Hepatozoon canis. However, although cardiac disease due to Leishmania infection has also been documented, the immunopathological features of myocarditis have not been reported so far. The aim of this study was to examine the types of cellular infiltrates and expression of MHC classes I and II in myocardial samples obtained at necropsy from 15 dogs with an established intravitam diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Pathological features of myocardium were characterized by hyaline degeneration of cardiomyocytes, necrosis, and infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells consisting of lymphocytes and macrophages, sometimes with perivascular pattern; fibrosis was also present in various degrees. Immunophenotyping of inflammatory cells was performed by immunohistochemistry on cryostat sections obtained from the heart of the infected dogs. The predominant leukocyte population was CD8+ with a fewer number of CD4+ cells. Many cardiomyocytes expressed MHC classes I and II on the sarcolemma. Leishmania amastigote forms were not detected within macrophages or any other cell of the examined samples. Our study provided evidence that myocarditis in canine visceral leishmaniasis might be related to immunological alterations associated with Leishmania infection.

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os indicadores laboratoriais, eletrocardiográficos e histológicos de lesão cardíaca em diferentes grupos clínicos de cães com leishmaniose visceral. Foram analisados marcadores séricos, traçado eletrocardiográfico e fragmentos de tecido cardíaco de 41 cães naturalmente infectados, distribuídos em três grupos: assintomático, oligossintomático e sintomático. Todos os animais apresentaram aumento na atividade sérica da enzima creatina quinase fração MB. No traçado eletrocardiográfico, o complexo de baixa voltagem foi o distúrbio de condução mais frequente (8/10). Na análise histológica, 75,6% dos cães apresentaram reação inflamatória com predomínio de infiltrados linfo-histiocítico (13/31) de intensidade discreta a moderada e distribuição multifocal. As alterações microscópicas identificadas no miocárdio foram independentes dos achados laboratoriais, eletrocardiográficos e do quadro clínico apresentado pelos animais estudados. A ausência de associação entre alterações histopatológicas e os parâmetros investigados alerta para a dificuldade de identificação de cardiopatia em cães com leishmaniose visceral e ressalta a importância de incluir a leishmaniose visceral no diagnóstico de patologias cardíacas principalmente em regiões endêmicas para o agente.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a cosmopolitan parasitic zoonosis that can promote myocarditis and heart rate changes in canine and human hosts. Thus, histopathological aspects of the myocardium and clinical, hematological, biochemical, radiological and electrocardiographic data were evaluated in a group of 36 dogs naturally infected with VL (VLG) and compared to data from 15 non-infected dogs (CG=Control Group). A prevalence of asymptomatic dogs was present in the CG (100%) and polysymptomatic dogs in the VLG (66%). In addition, two dogs in the VLG demonstrated systolic murmurs in the mitral valve region: one with a II/VI intensity and the other with a III/VI intensity. The mean values of RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit were lower in dogs in VLG and were associated with higher values of total protein, total leukocytes, neutrophils, creatine kinase overall (CK) and the CK-MB fraction (CK-MB). The absence of radiographic changes was accompanied by a predominance of respiratory sinus arrhythmia associated with episodes of migratory pacemaker and sinus arrest in dogs in VLG (75%), sinus rhythm in dogs in CG (60%) and decreased P wave amplitude in VLG electrocardiography. Mononuclear cell infiltration was detected in the myocardium of 77,8% of dogs in GVL and classified primarily as mild multifocal lymphohistioplasmacytic. Amastigotes were detected in only one dog, which did not allow the association between myocarditis and parasitism, although the myocardial lesions that were found constitute irrefutable evidence of myocarditis in the VLG dogs, accompanied by lenient electrocardiographic changes compared to CG.

Abstract
Leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania infantum is a vector-borne zoonotic disease endemic in southern Europe, but which is spreading northwards. Millions of dogs, cats and other non-conventional companion animals susceptible to L. infantum, living in European households, may develop a severe disease and contribute to the spread of leishmaniosis because of travelling or re-homing. Dogs are the main reservoir but other new reservoirs have recently been incriminated. Sand flies remain the sole proven vector and non-vectorial transmission has been reported at individual level and in areas where the vector is absent. Clinical disease affects only a proportion of infected dogs and a complex genetic background of immune response is responsible for this susceptibility. There is a wide range of serological and parasitological diagnostic tools available whose cost-effective use depends on a reasoned approach. Clinical response to treatment of sick dogs is variable. Clinical cure is often obtained but clinical recurrence can occur and post-therapy follow up should be maintained life-long. In Europe, vaccination can be combined with individual protection with pyrethroids as part of an integrated approach to prevention. L. infantum is the only species isolated from cats in Europe and xenodiagnosis substantiated that infected cats are infectious for sand flies. Feline infection may be frequent in endemic areas, but prevalence is generally lower than in dogs. When cats are tested by both serological and molecular techniques discordant results are often observed. Feline cases have been reported from endemic areas in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, but four cases were also diagnosed in Switzerland in cats that had travelled to or been imported from Spain. Half of the cases were diagnosed in cats with impaired immune responses. Clinical manifestations compatible with feline leishmaniosis include lymph node enlargement, skin and mucocutaneous lesions, ocular lesions, chronic gingivostomatitis, hypergammaglobulinemia, and normocytic normochromic anemia. Cats have been empirically treated with some drugs used in dogs. Due to polymorphic clinical picture and the insidious progressive course, leishmaniosis can persist for a long time before dogs or cats are brought to a veterinarian and so diagnosis can be delayed. Exotic or new Leishmania spp. have been reported in humans, animals and vectors in Europe. This changing situation requires attention in Europe for designing epidemiological studies and control measures.

Abstract
The hearts of 30 dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum chagasi were evaluated histologically and immunohistochemically. Myocardial lesions were detected in all dogs, including lymphoplasmacytic myocarditis (27/30), myonecrosis (24/30), increased interstitial collagen (22/30), lepromatous-type granulomatous myocarditis (7/30), fibrinoid vascular change (3/30), and vasculitis (1/30). The parasite was detected in the hearts of 20 of 30 dogs. The number of parasitized cells correlated with the intensity of the inflammation and with the number of granulomas. The results indicate that cardiac lesions are prevalent in dogs with naturally occurring leishmaniasis even in the absence of clinical signs of cardiac disease.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: Apesar de escassas, as principais alterações cardiopulmonares verificadas durante a infecção com Leishmaniose Visceral (LV) se referem a alterações histológicas e imunológicas e poucos relatos de repercussões funcionais. OBJETIVO: Verificar e analisar a existência de adaptações crônicas na função pulmonar de indivíduos assintomáticos previamente infectados pela LV. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo do tipo transversal descritivo, para o qual foram selecionados todos os indivíduos que contraíram LV em Parnaíba (Piauí, Brasil) entre 2007 e 2010 de acordo com informações do Setor de Epidemiologia do município. De um total de 20 indivíduos com confirmação parasitológica de LV, foram avaliados nove com idades entre 18 e 62 anos entre setembro e outubro de 2011. Excluíram-se indivíduos que não apresentaram diagnóstico parasitológico de LV, doenças ou sintomas cardiorrespiratórios recentes, usuários crônicos de drogas ilícitas e gestantes. Foram realizadas medidas antropométricas e testes de espirometria e de manovacuometria conforme especificações da American Thoracic Society / European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS). Para comparação das médias dos valores medidos e preditos foi realizado Teste t Student para dados dependentes. O nível de significância adotado foi p < 0,05. RESULTADOS: A Capacidade Vital Forçada (CVF) (3,8 ± 0,9 vs. 4,2 ± 0,8 L) e o Volume Expiratório Forçado no primeiro segundo (VEF1) (3,3 ± 0,7 vs. 3,5 ± 0,7 L) foram estatisticamente menores do que os valores medidos (p < 0,01). A relação VEF1/CVF (87,6 vs. 84,4%) foi maior nos valores medidos (p = 0,08). CONCLUSÃO: Apesar de o número de indivíduos avaliados ser pequeno, os dados indicam que a infecção por LV parece desenvolver adaptações crônicas sobre o sistema respiratório, resultando em volumes pulmonares significativamente diminuídos e uma tendência a padrões respiratórios restritivos.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been known to occur in the state of Piauí since 1934. The typically rural disease began to appear in urban areas over time, being concentrated mainly in Teresina, the capital of Piauí. Teresina was also affected by the first urban epidemic of VL in Brazil. Over 1,000 cases of the disease were reported during urbanization (1981-1986). Human population growth and migration led to land occupation on the outskirts of Teresina. These factors have contributed to vector proliferation, increasing the incidence of VL. At present, the incidence of human and canine disease is quite high and uncontrolled in Piauí. It seems that some measures, such as the elimination of seropositive dogs, failed to significantly reduce the number of new VL cases in Teresina. Despite previously conducted studies, little is known about VL epidemiology in urban areas. The aim of this review is to reveal the situation of VL in Teresina during the last 40 years, focusing on the major factors that may contribute to the high incidence and persistence of VL infection.
