Root substance removal with Er:YAG laser radiation at different parameters using a new delivery system

Dentin Collagen versus Er:YAG Laser as Surface Biomodifiers for Intact Root Slices Simulating Delayed Replanted Roots

Objective: To evaluate effects of dentin collagen versus Er:YAG laser application through enhancing human periodontal ligament fibroblast (PDLF) cells to attach to intact root surfaces imitating delayed replanted roots. Background Data: Accidental traumatic injuries with teeth avulsion are managed by replantation. Root resorption, poor conditioning, and non-viable fibroblasts are factors responsible for failure. Methods: Thirty six human healthy single-rooted premolars were collected. Six teeth were used for PDLF, six teeth used for dentin collagen, whereas the remaining 24 teeth (48 root slices) were used for PDLF cell density and morphology. Each root was soaked in 5.25% NaOCl. Three groups (n = 16 slices/each) were planned as follows: I: Control (untreated); II: dentin collagen application; III: Er:YAG laser irradiation (4 mm distance, 40 mJ/pulse, under coolant). Following incubation, cell density and morphology of PDLF were investigated under SEM. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance with Scheffé's test, and p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: All groups showed increased cultured PDLF following incubation. Regarding cell density, attached PDLFs were significantly lower in untreated controls (36.5 ± 6.36) (p < 0.00001 i.e., <0.05) in negative empty and/or light cellular areas, compared with dentin collagen (65 ± 6) and laser-irradiated (66.75 ± 5.77) groups that did not show significant differences (p = 0.940 i.e., >0.05) and showed intermediate and/or heavy cellular areas. Regarding cell morphology, controls showed round and/or oval appearance with less lamellipodia, whereas dentin collagen and laser groups showed flat morphology with cytoplasmic processes. Conclusions: Both dentin collagen and Er:YAG laser showed comparable effectiveness as biomodification tools with good biocompatibility for human PDLF cell attachment on intact root slices imitating delayed replantation. Dentin collagen as a natural bioactive material is considered an alternative to Er:YAG laser to enhance the regenerative effects.

Comparative evaluation of combined efficacy of methylene blue mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (a-PDT) using 660 nm diode laser versus Erbium-chromium-yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er, Cr: YSGG) laser as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on clinical parameters in supportive periodontal therapy: A randomized split-mouth trial

AIM

The aim of this study was to evaluate combined efficacy of methylene blue mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (a-PDT) using 660 nm diode laser versus Er, Cr: YSGG laser as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on improving the Probing depth (PD), Clinical attachment level (CAL), Plaque Index (PI) and Gingival Index (GI).clinical parameters in Supportive periodontal therapy.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

In this split-mouth, double-blind, randomized controlled trial, we compared a-PDT versus Er,Cr:YSGG as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) with SRP alone in Supportive periodontal therapy. A total of 36 subjected were enrolled. In each patient, two quadrants constituted the control group (Group I - Scaling and root planing SRP alone), one site in other quadrant constituted the test group 1 (Group II - SRP followed by application of Er, Cr: YSGG laser), and another site in different quadrant constituted the test group 2 (Group III - SRP followed by antimicrobial Photodynamic therapy using diode laser). The diode laser was operated at a peak power of 70 mW using a 0.6 mm diameter fiber-optic tip. Each site was irradiated with a power density of 28 mW/cm², for 10 s, thus delivering a total energy of 16.72 J/cm² per tooth. Whereas, the Er,Cr:YSGG laser's parameters were set to 1 W of power, 10% air, and 15% water. The same procedure was repeated at 1st, 2nd and 3rd week for both the laser therapies. Plaque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), Probing depth (PD,) and Clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured by a single examiner at baseline and 3 months follow up. Inter group analysis of the parameters were done using One-way ANOVA and pairwise comparison was carried out by Tukey's post hoc test. Intra group analysis was performed using Students's paired t test. Statistical significance was set to p < 0.05.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences between participants for clinical parameters at baseline. PI, GI PD, and CAL significantly improved at 3 months follow up compared to baseline in both the study groups (Group II - SRP + Er,Cr:YSGG, Group III - SRP + a-PDT) with P < 0.05. Adjunctive use of Er,Cr:YSGG laser with SRP showed better clinical outcomes than a-PDT with SRP.

CONCLUSION

Nonsurgical periodontal therapy of chronic periodontitis using Er, Cr: YSGG, and a-PDT as an adjunct to SRP was significantly more effective than SRP alone in reducing PD, CAL, GI, and PI at 3 months follow up. Adjunctive use of Er,Cr:YSGG laser with SRP showed better clinical outcomes than a-PDT with SRP. However, the long-term positive benefits of the laser therapies are yet unknown and more research with longer follow-ups are required.

Erbium-doped: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) versus scaling and root planing for the treatment of periodontal disease: A single-blinded split-mouth randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND

This randomized, controlled clinical trial aimed to compare the differences in periodontal clinical outcomes, duration of the procedure, and patient's experience between conventional scaling and root planing and erbium-doped: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) in the treatment of generalized moderate to severe chronic periodontitis or generalized Stages II or III, and Grade B periodontitis based on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), and European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) definitions.

METHODS

Thirty subjects were initially recruited. In a split-mouth fashion, right and left sides were randomly allocated into two treatment arms: conventional scaling and root planing (C-SRP) versus laser-assisted scaling and root planing (L-SRP). A blinded examiner recorded clinical measurements at baseline and 3 months. Duration of the procedure was also recorded for each visit, and the patient's experience was assessed with a questionnaire at baseline, 1, and 3 months.

RESULTS

The final sample consisted of 26 subjects. Both treatments resulted in overall improvement, but no significant differences were found between modalities for clinical attachment gain or probing depth reduction. The duration of the procedure was approximately half for L-SRP, and postoperative sensitivity was greater in C-SRP.

CONCLUSIONS

The low-energy protocol with Er:YAG (50 mJ) used for the non-surgical treatment of moderate-severe chronic or Stage II-III, Grade B periodontitis performed in this study population was a treatment modality that yielded similar clinical improvements when compared to conventional scaling and root planing.

Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of CO2 and Er:YAG Lasers on Smear Layer Removal and Blood Cell Attachment to Tooth Root Surfaces

Introduction: The tooth root surfaces are modified by different agents for better removal of the smear layer, the formation of fibrin clots, and the attachment of blood cells. This in vitro study compared the removal of the smear layer, the formation of fibrin clots and the attachment of blood cells after exposing periodontally compromised root surfaces to ER:YAG and CO₂ laser beams. Methods: Eighteen dentin block samples were prepared from freshly extracted periodontally compromised teeth that were deemed hopeless, and they were divided into 3 groups: exposed to Er:YAG laser beams, exposed to CO₂ laser beams, and the control group. The samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and micrographs were taken. Smear layer removal and blood cell attachment were scored. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and MannWhitney tests. Results: In the Er:YAG laser group, the smear layer was removed completely. In the specimens exposed to blood, better fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment were observed in the Er:YAG laser group. In the CO₂ laser group, the smear layer was also removed; however, there were no significant differences between the CO₂ laser and control groups in fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment. Conclusion: The application of the Er:YAG laser to the root dentin appears to result in the formation of a suitable surface for fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment. Further clinical studies are necessary to support these results.

Calculus Removal and Root Surface Roughness When Using the Er:YAG or Er,Cr:YSGG Laser Compared with Conventional Instrumentation Method: A Literature Review

Objective: The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate the effectiveness of using Er:YAG (erbium-doped yttrium/aluminum/garnet) laser or Er,Cr:YSGG (erbium, chromium-doped yttrium/scandium/gallium/garnet) laser on calculus removal and their effect on the topography and roughness of root surface in comparison with the conventional instruments in the nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Background data: One of the most challenging problems in treatment of periodontal disease is the elimination of plaque and calculus, leaving a clean and smooth root surface to decrease plaque and calculus retention, and for good gingival reattachment. Materials and methods: PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for available literature. The electronic search was limited to articles published in the period between January 2007 and April 2017, in the English language. Results: A total of 47 publications fulfilled the inclusion criteria of this systematic review and screened according to the research questions. Calculus removal using the ultrasonic instrument showed remaining calculus compared with the hand instrument, whereas, on the contrary, erbium lasers revealed no remaining calculus or smaller amounts compared with the conventional instruments when used in appropriate settings. The results of this review showed that ultrasonic instrumentation produced effects on the root surface almost similar to that of hand instrumentation. Er:YAG laser and Er,Cr:YSGG laser clarify a little more surface roughness when compared with conventional instruments. Conclusions: The present systematic review indicates that a combination of scaling and root planing (SRP) using the erbium lasers as an adjunctive therapy at certain parameters can be appropriate to remove residual debris from the root surface and at the same time have little or no negative thermal effect on the root surface. The Er:YAG laser also seems to be the most suitable for nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Additional new good-designed studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of erbium lasers with SRP in nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

Photonic Therapy in Periodontal Diseases an Overview with Appraisal of the Literature and Reasoned Treatment Recommendations

Recent reviews and meta-analyses of the literature over the past quarter-century have failed to provide enough evidence to prove or disprove the actual utility of photonic therapy in periodontitis, alone or adjunctive to conventional approaches. This apparent paradox has been explained by the many physical, molecular, biological, anatomical, and technical variables of photonic treatments, which can differ in light-emitting devices (laser or LED), wavelengths, irradiation power and modes, clinical objectives, follow-up times, disease grading, and assessment methods. This multi-faceted, controversial scenario has led practitioners to underestimate the actual potential of photonic therapy in periodontal diseases. In this critical appraisal of the literature, we have briefly summarized the main photonic therapies and instruments used in Periodontology, highlighting their main characteristics and limitations. Then, we have tried to identify and discuss the key methodological issues which can have an impact on the outcome of photonic therapies. Our main goal was to identify the best parameters, settings, and methodologies to perform effective periodontal photonic treatments and to extrapolate some recommendations for clinical use. Should these recommendations find a consensus among periodontologists and be adopted in future clinical studies, they will hopefully contribute to dissipate the present confusion and uncertainty on this complex matter.

Comparison of conventional and laser-aided fiberotomy in relapse tendency of rotated tooth: A randomized controlled clinical trial

INTRODUCTION

The aim of the present study was to compare the tendency of mandibular incisor rotation relapse after conventional circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy (CSF) with Er,Cr:YSGG laser-aided CSF.

METHODS

In this three-arm parallel study, the patients with one lower incisor rotation greater than 30 degrees before treatment were selected. The patients were randomly assigned to three groups in a 1:1:1 ratio. Rotational relapse tendency was measured on a digitized model one month after arch wire removal. Probing depth, clinical crown height and pain levels were also measured.

RESULTS

A total of 46 patients were recruited. Relapse tendency in conventional CSF and laser-aided CSF groups were 5.09±1.59° and 4.87±2.08°, respectively, and significantly lower than 11.28±2.93° in the control group (P<0.001). Relapse tendency was not different between the conventional CSF and laser CSF groups. Probing depth, clinical crown height, and experienced pain levels exhibited negligible differences.

CONCLUSIONS

Er,Cr:YSGG laser-aided CSF in one month was as effective in reducing rotational relapse tendency of mandibular incisor teeth as conventional CSF.

Clinical Effectiveness of Er: YAG Lasers Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing in Non-Surgical Treatment of Chronic Periodontitis: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

BACKGROUND Er: YAG lasers (ERLs) show suitable characteristics for scaling and root planing, but previous studies have drawn conflicting conclusions. This meta-analysis aimed to systematically appraise the available evidence concerning the effectiveness of ERLs as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) for non-surgical periodontal treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing ERLs+SRP with SRP alone for the treatment of chronic periodontitis were searched in 9 electronic biomedical databases up to January 2018. The weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were counted for probing depth (PD) reduction, clinical attachment level (CAL) gain, and visual analog scale (VAS) score. Heterogeneity was evaluated with the I² statistic for interstudy comparisons and the χ²-based Q statistic for intra-study comparisons. Sensitivity analysis was conducted by switching to a random or fixed effect model based on the heterogeneity. Publication bias was measured by Begg's test. RESULTS Ten related RCTs met the inclusion criteria. There were statistically significant differences in the assessed clinical parameters at the three-month follow-up: PD reduction (WMD=0.32, 95%CI range from 0.14 to 0.51, p<0.001; p=0.003, I²=69.7%); CAL gain (WMD=0.31, 95%CI range from 0.22 to 0.40, p<0.001; p=0.209, I²=28.8%); and VAS scores (WMD=-1.38, 95%CI range from -2.45 to -0.31, p<0.001; p=0.182, I²=44%). There were no significant differences at the six- and twelve-month follow-ups. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the results were consistent. No evidence of publication bias was detected. CONCLUSIONS This systematic analysis demonstrated that ERLs+SRP provides additional short-term effectiveness and that patients experience less pain compared to SRP. There were no significant differences at the medium-term and long-term follow-ups. Long-term well-designed RCTs are required.

Comparison of Er:YAG Laser and Hand Instrumentation on the Attachment of Cultured Human Gingival Fibroblasts to Periodontally Involved Root Surfaces

Introduction: The present study compared the effects of erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:YAG) laser and hand instrumentation on the attachment of human gingival fibroblast (HGF) cells to periodontally involved root surfaces. Methods: A total of 40 tooth specimens were collected and treated in four distinct groups: scaled and root planed with hand instruments, scaled with Er:YAG laser, treated with a combination of hand instruments and Er:YAG laser and non-treated control group. The attachment and proliferation rate of HGF were assessed using MTT assay and scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination was used for cell morphological evaluation. Results: The MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay showed significant decrease in HGF cell viability in both hand instruments only and combination treated teeth specimens compared to control specimens (P<0.05), 24 hours after cell seeding. However, at time 48, the cell viability of attached cells in these 2 treated groups was almost similar to control. In contrast, at 24 and 48 hours after cell seeding, viability of attached cells was higher than control in Er:YAG laser treated only specimens (P<0.05). According to SEM study, the laser treated specimens showed more surface roughness. Conclusion: Er:YAG laser increased attachment and proliferation of HGF cells in comparison to the hand instruments method.

Comparison of Er:YAG Laser and Ultrasonic Scaler in the Treatment of Moderate Chronic Periodontitis: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Introduction: Periodontitis is an inflammatory periodontal disease that leads to tooth loss. Recently laser has been introduced as an alternative treatment for periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of Erbium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Er:YAG) laser with ultrasonic scaler in patients with moderate chronic periodontitis. Methods: In this randomized single-blind clinical trial, 27 patients with moderate chronic periodontitis were selected. One quadrant of the patients was treated by Er:YAG laser and the other one by ultrasonic scaler. Clinical parameters, including periodontal pocket depth (PPD), papillary bleeding index (PBI) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured before, as well as 6 and 12 weeks after treatment. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20 software using Friedman test, paired t test, independent t test and Mann-Whitney test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The means of clinical parameters in both groups were significantly improved in the first and second follow-ups (P < 0.001). Although the means of PPD, PBI and CAL were slightly higher in the laser group than in the ultrasonic group, the differences were not statistically significant between these two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Although both ultrasonic scaler and Er:YAG laser could effectively improve clinical periodontal parameters, the results did not reveal the superiority of Er:YAG laser over ultrasonic scaler or vice versa.

A microscopic analysis of the effects of root surface scaling with different power parameters of Er,Cr:YSGG laser

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different power parameters of an Erbium, Cromium: Yttrium, Scandium, Gallium, Garnet laser (Er,Cr:YSGG laser) on the morphology, attachment of blood components (ABC), roughness, and wear on irradiated root surfaces. Sixty-five incisive bovine teeth were used in this study, 35 of which were used for the analysis of root surface morphology and ABC. The remaining 30 teeth were used for roughness and root wear analysis. The samples were randomly allocated into seven groups: G1: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 0.5 W; G2: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 1.0 W; G3: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 1.5 W; G4: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 2.0 W; G5: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 2.5 W; G6: Er,Cr:YSGG laser, 3.0 W; G7: scaling and root planning (SRP) with manual curettes. The root surfaces irradiated by Er,Cr:YSGG at 1.0 W and scaling with manual curettes presented the highest degrees of ABC. The samples irradiated by the Er,Cr:YSGG laser were rougher than the samples treated by the manual curette, and increasing the laser power parameters caused more root wear and greater roughness on the root surface. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser is safe to use for periodontal treatment, but it is not appropriate to use irradiation greater than 1.0 W for this purpose.

Effects of root surface debridement using Er:YAG laser versus ultrasonic scaling - a SEM study

OBJECTIVE

Despite promising results of Er:YAG laser in periodontal debridement, to date there is no consensus about the ideal settings for clinical use. This experimental clinical trial aimed to determine the effects of debridement using Er:YAG laser and to compare with ultrasonic treatment.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty-four teeth were divided into two in vivo and in vitro subgroups. Each tooth received ultrasonic treatment on one side and Er:YAG laser debridement at either 60, 100, 160 or 250 mJ pulse(-1) and at 10 Hz on the other side on a random basis. All samples were morphologically analyzed afterwards under scanning electron microscope for surface changes and dentinal tubules exposure. Treatment duration (d) was also recorded.

RESULTS

Laser debridement produced an irregular, rough and flaky surface free of carbonization or meltdown while ultrasound produced a relatively smoother surface. The number of exposed dentinal tubules (n) followed an energy-dependent trend. The number of exposed tubules among the in vivo laser groups was n 60 mJ = n 100 mJ < n 160 mJ < n 250 mJ (P < 0.001). Also 160 and 250 mJ lasers led to significantly more dentinal exposure than ultrasound under in vivo condition. Within the in vitro laser groups, dentinal tubules exposure was n 60 mJ < n 100 mJ < n 160 mJ < n 250 mJ (P ≤ 0.0015). Furthermore, in vitro laser treatments at 100, 160 and 250 mJ led to significantly more dentinal denudation than ultrasound. Treatment duration (d) for the in vivo groups was d 60 mJ > d 100 mJ > d Ultrasound = d 160 mJ > d 250 mJ (P ≤ 0.046), while for the in vitro groups it was d 60 mJ > d 100 mJ = d Ultrasound = d 160 mJ >d 250 mJ (P ≤ 0.046).

CONCLUSIONS

Due to excessive treatment duration and surface damage, Er:YAG laser debridement at 60 and 250 mJ pulse(-1), respectively, is not appropriate for clinical use. Although laser debridement at 100 and 160 mJ pulse(-1) seems more suitable for clinical application, compared to ultrasound the former is more time-consuming and the latter is more aggressive. Using a feedback device or lower pulse energies are recommended when using laser in closed field.

Anti-infective therapy with an Er:YAG laser: influence on peri-implant healing

In addition to conventional treatment modalities (mechanical and chemical), the use of lasers has been increasingly proposed for the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections (i.e., cleaning and detoxification of implant surfaces). Preliminary results from basic studies have pointed to the high potential of the Erbium-doped: Yttrium, Aluminum and Garnet (Er:YAG) laser. Furthermore, preliminary clinical data indicate that treatment with this kind of laser may positively influence peri-implant healing. The aim of this research update is to evaluate, based on the currently available evidence, the use of an Er:YAG laser for the treatment of peri-implant infections and to indicate its potential as a new treatment modality.

Detection, removal and prevention of calculus: Literature Review

Dental plaque is considered to be a major etiological factor in the development of periodontal disease. Accordingly, the elimination of supra- and sub-gingival plaque and calculus is the cornerstone of periodontal therapy. Dental calculus is mineralized plaque; because it is porous, it can absorb various toxic products that can damage the periodontal tissues. Hence, calculus should be accurately detected and thoroughly removed for adequate periodontal therapy. Many techniques have been used to identify and remove calculus deposits present on the root surface. The purpose of this review was to compile the various methods and their advantages for the detection and removal of calculus.

A comparative scanning electron microscopy study between hand instrument, ultrasonic scaling and erbium doped:Yttirum aluminum garnet laser on root surface: A morphological and thermal analysis

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Scaling and root planing is one of the most commonly used procedures for the treatment of periodontal diseases. Removal of calculus using conventional hand instruments is incomplete and rather time consuming. In search of more efficient and less difficult instrumentation, investigators have proposed lasers as an alternative or as adjuncts to scaling and root planing. Hence, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of erbium doped: Yttirum aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser scaling and root planing alone or as an adjunct to hand and ultrasonic instrumentation.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

A total of 75 freshly extracted periodontally involved single rooted teeth were collected. Teeth were randomly divided into five treatment groups having 15 teeth each: Hand scaling only, ultrasonic scaling only, Er:YAG laser scaling only, hand scaling + Er:YAG laser scaling and ultrasonic scaling + Er:YAG laser scaling. Specimens were subjected to scanning electron microscopy and photographs were evaluated by three examiners who were blinded to the study. Parameters included were remaining calculus index, loss of tooth substance index, roughness loss of tooth substance index, presence or absence of smear layer, thermal damage and any other morphological damage.

RESULTS

Er:YAG laser treated specimens showed similar effectiveness in calculus removal to the other test groups whereas tooth substance loss and tooth surface roughness was more on comparison with other groups. Ultrasonic treated specimens showed better results as compared to other groups with different parameters. However, smear layer presence was seen more with hand and ultrasonic groups. Very few laser treated specimens showed thermal damage and morphological change.

INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION

In our study, ultrasonic scaling specimen have shown root surface clean and practically unaltered. On the other hand, hand instrument have produced a plane surface, but removed more tooth structure. The laser treated specimens showed rough surfaces without much residual deposit or any other sign of morphological change.

Effect of Er:YAG laser-activated irrigation solution on Enterococcus Faecalis biofilm in an ex-vivo root canal model

Abstract Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate mineral content and surface morphology of root canals coated with Enterococcus faecalis biofilm after treatment with several endodontic irrigation solutions, with and without Er:YAG laser-activated irrigation (LAI).

BACKGROUND DATA

LAI has been introduced as a powerful method for root canal irrigation resulting in smear-layer removal from the root canal wall.

METHODS

Distal and palatal roots from 60 freshly extracted human molars were used in this study. The coronal of each tooth was removed. Roots were split longitudinally and placed in an ultrasonic bath to remove the smear layer, creating conditions for the formation of E. faecalis biofilm. After incubation, the two halves were reassembled in impression material to simulate clinical conditions. Specimens were divided into two main groups: roots rinsed with irrigation solutions and roots subjected to laser irradiation combined with irrigation solutions. Solutions tested were 2% chlorhexidine and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and saline.

RESULTS

Surface morphology: 17% EDTA irrigant solution combined with Er:YAG laser showed the best results for removing bacteria from the root canal walls. Chemical analysis: all samples treated with combined laser irradiation and irrigation solution had low surface levels of Ca compared with samples treated with irrigation alone. The Ca/P ratio was highest in the laser-EDTA group. Overall, mineral changes caused by laser with irrigation solutions were minimal, and statistically nonsignificant.

CONCLUSIONS

In vitro irrigation solutions, combined with Er:YAG laser irradiation, were effective in removing E. faecalis biofilm from root canal walls. Irrigation solutions without laser irradiation were less effective, leaving a layer of biofilm on the dentin surface.

Evaluation of blood cell attachment on Er: YAG laser applied root surface using scanning electron microscopy

BACKGROUND

Periodontal regeneration is dependent on the uninterrupted adhesion, maturation and absorption of fibrin clots to a periodontally compromised root surface. The modification of the root surface with different agents has been used for better fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment. It is known that Er:YAG laser application on dentin removes the smear layer succesfully.

AIM

The aim of this study is to observe blood cell attachment and fibrin network formation following ER:YAG laser irradiation on periodontally compromised root surfaces in comparison to chemical root conditioning techniques in vitro.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

40 dentin blocks prepared from freshly extracted periodontally compromised hopeless teeth. Specimens were divided in 5 groups; those applied with PBS, EDTA, Citric acid and Er:YAG. They were further divided into two groups: those which had received these applications, and the control group. The specimens were evaluated with scanning electron microscope and micrographs were taken. Smear layer and blood cell attachment scoring was performed.

RESULTS

In the Er:YAG laser applied group, smear layer were totally removed. In the blood applied specimens, better fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment were observed in the Er:YAG group. In the group that had been applied with citric acid, the smear layer was also removed. The smear layer could not be fully removed in the EDTA group.

CONCLUSION

Er:YAG laser application on the root dentin seems to form a suitable surface for fibrin clot formation and blood cell attachment. Further clinical studies to support these results are necessitated.

Effects of laser-aided circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy on root surfaces

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate and compare the effects of circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy in vivo (using diode, CO(2), and Er∶YAG lasers) on the morphology and chemical composition of the root surface.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty healthy premolar teeth, intended for extraction for orthodontic reasons, were used in this study. Root surfaces were treated using different laser methods, as follows: (1) control; (2) Er∶YAG laser (2.94 µm, 100 mJ, 10 Hz); (3) diode laser (808 nm, 1.2 W, continuous wave); and (4) CO(2) laser (10.6 µm, 3 W, continuous wave). Subsequently, the teeth were removed and subjected to scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectrometric analysis.

RESULTS

SEM analysis indicated that no thermal changes, including melting or carbonization, were observed following the lasing procedures. EDX analysis showed that the laser procedures resulted in similar mineral contents (weight % of calcium and phosphate) as compared to those in the control group.

CONCLUSION

Based on these findings, we concluded that laser-aided procedures, when used at appropriate laser settings, preserve the original morphology and chemical composition of cementum.

Removal of organic debris with Er:YAG laser irradiation and microleakage of fissures sealants in vitro

The current study was conducted to improve fissure sealing by pre-treatment with Er:YAG laser irradiation in order to remove organic debris. The surface morphology, surface roughness of fissure cavities, and the degree of microleakage after laser treatment were compared with those after bristle brush treatment in vitro. Sixty extracted human teeth were used in this study. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups of 30 each. Artificial fissures were prepared in all teeth into which artificial organic debris was placed. The debris in 30 teeth of one group was removed by means of Er:YAG laser system and the remaining 30 teeth were cleaned using a bristle brush with prophylaxis paste. Surface morphology and surface roughness of were analyzed in ten samples from each group by color laser three-dimensional (3D) microscopy and by scanning electron microscopic examination. The remaining samples were then filled with sealant and subjected to a microleakage test under thermocycling. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test; a value of p < 0.05 was considered significant. Morphologically, most of the debris was removed by Er:YAG laser treatment, whereas some fissures were not cleaned by bristle brush. However, microleakage test of both laser and etched brush methods showed similar results. Laser technique might facilitate good adaptation of resin sealant to enamel, because of an increase in surface roughness and favorable surface characteristics.

Efficacy of Er:YAG laser in the treatment of chronic periodontitis: systematic review and meta-analysis

Scaling root planing (SRP) has been proven efficacious as the traditional treatment approach for chronic periodontitis. However, important limitations such as difficult access in deep pockets, grooves, and furcations have led to the development of new therapeutic strategies. The erbium-doped:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Er:YAG) laser is one of the most promising laser types for periodontal therapy. Its efficacy in radicular debris removal and root smoothing has been proven in vitro. However, the clinical effectiveness of the Er:YAG laser remains controversial. The aim of the present systematic review was to systemically assess the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser compared to SRP in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Electronic database searches of MEDLINE, Cochrane Controlled Clinical Trial Register, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, CINAHL, Science Direct, ISI Web of Science, and SCOPUS were performed, as well as hand-searching of relevant journals through December 23, 2010. Quality assessment was made according to the CONSORT guidelines. The systematic review was performed according to the QUOROM statement and Cochrane Collaboration recommendations. Meta-analyses of the clinical attachment level gain, probing depth reduction, and changes in gingival recession were performed using weighted mean differences for continuous data with 95% confidence intervals, nested in a random effect model. No statistically significant differences were found in any of the investigated clinical parameters among the five random controlled trials (RCTs) entered into the study, indicating that there was no evidence of effectiveness. However, significant heterogeneity, a high risk of bias in three of the five included studies, and methodological shortcomings indicate that the results should be considered with caution. Future long-term, well-designed RCTs are needed to assess the scientific evidence of Er:YAG laser efficacy as an alternative treatment strategy to SRP.

Influence of the angle of irradiation of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the morphology, attachment of blood components, roughness, and root wear: in vitro study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the influence of the working tip angulation of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the morphology, attachment of blood components, roughness, and wear on irradiated root surfaces compared to scaling and root planing (SRP).

STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present study used 45 teeth, of which 25 were used for the analysis of the morphology and the attachment of blood components and 20 were used for the analysis of the roughness and of the root wear. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups according to the treatment applied: (G1) Laser Er,Cr:YSGG-30°; (G2) Laser Er,Cr:YSGG-45°; (G3) Laser Er,Cr:YSGG-60°; (G4) Laser Er,Cr:YSGG-90°; and (G5) SRP.

RESULTS

The root surfaces irradiated with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser working angulation tip of 45° and 60°, and the samples scaled with manual instruments presented greater attachment of blood components than the group where the Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiated at working tip angulation of 30° and 90° (P<0.05). The samples irradiated with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser were rougher than the samples scaled with manual instruments (P<0.05). The group that was irradiated with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser at an angle of 30° presented the least wear in comparison to all the other treatments (P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The irradiated root surfaces proved to be rougher than those scaled with manual instruments; however, irradiation at working tip angulations of 45° and 60° produced results of attachment of blood components and root wear comparable with those obtained with manual instrumentation.

Root surface biomodification with an Er:YAG laser for the treatment of gingival recession with subepithelial connective tissue grafts

BACKGROUND/AIM

Root surface biomodification has been used to treat gingival recession and periodontitis. The principle for this procedure is that removing the smear layer from the root surfaces exposes collagen fibers, which leads to improved healing. Clinical studies generally have failed to find any improvement in clinical parameters when using such agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcome of gingival recession therapy using the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) with or without Er:YAG laser application for root surface biomodification.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-four teeth in 12 patients with Miller class I and II recession were treated with SCTG with (test group) or without (control group) the application of an Er:YAG laser (2 Hz, 60 mJ/pulse, 40 s, with air spray). Clinical attachment level (CAL), recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), and probing depth (PD) were measured at baseline and 6 months postsurgery.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences between test and control groups (p > 0.05). Postoperatively, significant root coverage, gains in CAL, and highly significant increases in the RW were observed in both groups. For test and control groups, the average root coverage was 80% and 86%, respectively (p > 0.05), and complete root coverage was 75% and 67%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study showed that root surface conditioning with an Er:YAG laser does not enhance the results achieved when SCTG was performed alone.

Root surface biomodification with Nd:YAG laser for the treatment of gingival recession with subepithelial connective tissue grafts

BACKGROUND/AIM

Thirty-four teeth in 17 patients with Miller Class 1 and 2 recession were treated with SCTG with (test group) or without (control group) the application of Nd:YAG laser (1 W, 10 Hz, 100 mj, 60 s, 1064 nm). Clinical attachment level (CAL), recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), and probing depth (PD) were measured at baseline and six months postsurgery.

RESULTS

Both treatments yielded significant improvements in terms of RD and RW decrease and CAL gain compared to baseline values. For test and control groups, the average root coverage was 33% and 77%, respectively (p < 0.05), and the complete root coverage was 18% and 65%, respectively (p < 0.05). The control group showed a greater reduction in RD and RW compared with the test group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The use of Nd:YAG laser as a root surface biomodifier negatively affected the outcome of root coverage with the SCTG.

Clinical and microbiologic follow-up evaluations after non-surgical periodontal treatment with erbium:YAG laser and scaling and root planing

BACKGROUND

This study compared erbium-doped: yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation (100 mJ/pulse; 10 Hz; 12.9 J/cm(2)) with or without conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) to SRP only for treatment of periodontal pockets.

METHODS

Nineteen patients with pockets from 5 to 9 mm were included. In a split-mouth design, each site was allocated to a treatment group: 1) SRPL, SRP and laser; 2) L, laser; 3) SRP, SRP only; and 4) C, no treatment. Clinical parameters of probing depth (PD), gingival recession, and clinical attachment level (CAL) were evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. Visible plaque index, gingival bleeding index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and subgingival plaque samples were also measured 12 days postoperatively, in addition to the above mentioned months. Intergroup and intragroup statistical analyses were performed (P <0.05).

RESULTS

GI decreased for SRPL and increased for L, SRP, and C (P <0.05) 12 days postoperatively and decreased for SRPL and SRP (P <0.05) 3, 6, and 12 months after baseline; BOP and PD decreased for all treated groups (P <0.01) 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. CAL gain was significant for SRPL, L, and SRP (P <0.05) 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. SRPL and L presented a significant reduction in the percentage of sites with bacteria 6 and 12 months after treatment (P <0.05).

CONCLUSION

Non-surgical periodontal treatment with Er:YAG laser may be an alternative treatment for reduction and control of the proliferation of microorganisms in persistent periodontitis.

Short-term clinical and immunologic effects of scaling and root planing with Er:YAG laser in chronic periodontitis

BACKGROUND

Recently, the erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser has been used for periodontal therapy. This study compared Er:YAG laser irradiation (100 mJ/pulse, 10 Hz, 12.9 J/cm(2)) with or without conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) to SRP only for the treatment of periodontal pockets affected with chronic periodontitis.

METHODS

Twenty-one subjects with pockets from 5 to 9 mm in non-adjacent sites were studied. In a split-mouth design, each site was randomly allocated to a treatment group: SRP and laser (SRPL), laser only (L), SRP only (SRP), or no treatment (C). The plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and interleukin (IL)-1beta levels in crevicular fluid were evaluated at baseline and at 12 and 30 days postoperatively, whereas probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were evaluated at baseline and 30 days after treatment. A statistical analysis was conducted (P <0.05).

RESULTS

Twelve days postoperatively, the PI decreased for SRPL and SRP groups (P <0.05); the GI increased for L, SRP, and C groups but decreased for the SRPL group (P <0.05); and BOP decreased for SRPL, L, and SRP groups (P <0.01). Thirty days postoperatively, BOP decreased for treated groups and was lower than the C group (P <0.05). PD decreased in treated groups (P <0.001), and differences were found between SRPL and C groups (P <0.05). CAL gain was significant only for the SRP group (P <0.01). GR increased for SRPL and L groups (P <0.05). No difference in IL-1beta was detected among groups and periods.

CONCLUSION

Er:YAG laser irradiation may be used as an adjunctive aid for the treatment of periodontal pockets, although a significant CAL gain was observed with SRP alone and not with laser treatment.

Comparing the effects of root surface scaling with ultrasound instruments and Er,Cr:YSGG laser

There are several studies done to show the comparability of laser scaling and root planing with routine methods. The most suitable wavelengths for such an application are reported as 2,940 and 2,780 nm. The superficial interactions of the current wavelength with root surface is investigated in this study to compare the crater and crack formation during the procedures between ultrasound and Er,Cr:yttrium-scandium-gallium garnet (YSGG; 2,780 nm) laser-treated teeth. Thirty human teeth with calculus on their root surface, which were extracted because of the severe periodontitis, were selected for this interventional in vitro study. Calculus area were divided into two equal parts: One of them was prepared for Er,Cr:YSGG (Biolase, Waterlase, USA) laser irradiation and the other one for ultrasound treatment (Dentsply cavitron, DENTSPLY International, USA). The Er,Cr:YSGG laser was specified as follows: pulse energy = 50 mJ, power = 1 W, wavelength = 2,780 nm, pulse repetition rate = 20 pulse per seconds, tip length = 6 mm, and tip diameter = 600 microm. Nineteen of the laser samples (95%) and eight of ultrasound ones (40%) out of 20 samples in each group had craters showing a statistical significant difference (p < 0.001). The number and depth of these craters are also evaluated. Thirteen samples of the laser cases (65%) and all samples of the ultrasound group showed cracks with significant differences (p = 0.008). In addition, the number and width of cracks in both groups are reported. As a general conclusion, the laser-treated samples show more craters but less cracks.

Effect of Er:YAG Laser Combined With rhPDGF-BB on Attachment of Cultured Fibroblasts to Periodontally Involved Root Surfaces

BACKGROUND

The use of the erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser in periodontal therapy has been the focus of much research. Recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) is suggested as a potent stimulator and strong mitogen for human periodontal ligament cells. The present study tested the direct effects of Er:YAG laser irradiation, alone or with rhPDGF-BB application, on the biocompatibility of periodontally diseased roots through fibroblast attachment and proliferation.

METHODS

The study examined five healthy and 15 periodontally involved teeth, prepared from proximal surfaces, which were divided randomly into four groups (10 specimens each): group 1: healthy; group 2: untreated diseased; group 3: Er:YAG laser irradiation (60 mJ/pulse, 10 Hz); and group 4: Er:YAG laser irradiation (60 mJ/pulse, 10 Hz) plus rhPDGF-BB application (50 ng/ml). Three subgroups per group (three specimens each) were incubated for three periods (1, 3, or 7 days). The remaining specimen was used to determine surface topography. Fibroblasts were pooled on root specimens and incubated. Results were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. Repeated cell counts were performed within a representative standard area.

RESULTS

Using paired t tests, all experimental groups (except group 2 diseased) showed statistically significant differences between 1- and 3-day and between 1- and 7-day incubation periods, but not between 3- and 7-day incubation periods. Using analysis of variance, the intergroup comparison showed significant differences favoring group 1 over groups 2 and 3 and group 4 over group 2 at the 1-day incubation period; group 1 was favored over groups 2, 3, and 4 and groups 3 and 4 were favored over group 2 at the 3- and 7-day incubation periods. Comparable effects were shown between groups 3 and 4 for all incubation periods and between groups 2 and 3 and groups 1 and 4 for the 1-day incubation.

CONCLUSIONS

Er:YAG laser used alone or in combination with rhPDGF-BB application may offer a promising periodontal therapy for conditioning root surfaces, although the combined application seemed to be slightly more effective. However, testing laser use in intervals and with parameters <60 mJ/pulse and 10 Hz is required to verify the minimum threshold values necessary to obtain complete root debridement and clarify optimal conditions for fibroblast cell attachment and growth. Further studies are needed to determine ideal parameters for creating the best environment for successful periodontal treatment.

Lasers and soft tissue: periodontal therapy

Periodontology exists as a major specialty within clinical dentistry that has developed through the extensive research carried out into all parameters pertaining to a 'best practice' approach. With the advent of surgical lasers into clinical dentistry, considerable interest has been shown in the possible benefits that might be derived from the adjunctive effects of bacterial control and haemostasis that are associated with laser use. Despite the number of publications on the subject, there is still controversy over the use of lasers in periodontology. The following paper will outline the procedures that have been advocated for laser use and provide a review of the literature.

Effect of Er:YAG and Diode lasers on the adhesion of blood components and on the morphology of irradiated root surfaces

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the adhesion of blood components on root surfaces irradiated with Er:YAG (2.94 microm) and GaAlAs Diode (808 nm) lasers and the effects on the morphology of irradiated root surfaces.

METHODS

One hundred samples of human teeth were obtained. They were previously planed and scaled with manual instruments and divided into five groups of 20 samples each: G1 (control group) - absence of treatment; G2--Er:YAG laser (7.6 J/cm2); G3--Er:YAG laser (12.9 J/cm2); G4--Diode laser (90 J/cm2) and G5--Diode laser (108 J/cm2). After these treatments, 10 samples of each group received a blood tissue but the remaining 10 did not. After laboratory treatments, the samples were obtained by SEM, the photomicrographs were analysed by the score of adhesion of blood components and the results were statistically analysed (Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test).

RESULTS

In relation to the adhesion of blood components, the study showed no significant differences between the control group and the groups treated with Er:YAG laser (p = 0.9633 and 0.6229). Diode laser radiation was less effective than control group and Er:YAG laser radiation (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

None of the proposed treatments increased the adhesion of blood components in a significant way when compared to the control group. Although the Er:YAG laser did not interfere in the adhesion of blood components, it caused more changes on the root surface, whereas the Diode laser inhibited the adhesion.

Lasers in periodontics: a review of the literature

BACKGROUND

Despite the large number of publications, there is still controversy among clinicians regarding the application of dental lasers to the treatment of chronic periodontitis. The purpose of this review is to analyze the peer-reviewed research literature to determine the state of the science concerning the application of lasers to common oral soft tissue problems, root surface detoxification, and the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

METHODS

A comprehensive computer-based search combined the following databases into one search: Medline, Current Contents, and the Cumulated Index of Nursing and Allied Health. This search also used key words. In addition, hand searches were done for several journals not cataloged in the databases, and the reference lists from published articles were checked. All articles were considered individually to eliminate non-peer-reviewed articles, those dealing with commercial laser technology, and those considered by the author to be purely opinion articles, leaving 278 possible articles.

RESULTS

There is a considerable conflict in results for both laboratory studies and clinical trials, even when using the same laser wavelength. A meaningful comparison between various clinical studies or between laser and conventional therapy is difficult at best and likely impossible at the present. Reasons for this dilemma are several, such as different laser wavelengths; wide variations in laser parameters; insufficient reporting of parameters that, in turn, does not allow calculation of energy density; differences in experimental design, lack of proper controls, and differences in severity of disease and treatment protocols; and measurement of different clinical endpoints.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on this review of the literature, there is a great need to develop an evidence-based approach to the use of lasers for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Simply put, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that any specific wavelength of laser is superior to the traditional modalities of therapy. Current evidence does suggest that use of the Nd:YAG or Er:YAG wavelengths for treatment of chronic periodontitis may be equivalent to scaling and root planing (SRP) with respect to reduction in probing depth and subgingival bacterial populations. However, if gain in clinical attachment level is considered the gold standard for non-surgical periodontal therapy, then the evidence supporting laser-mediated periodontal treatment over traditional therapy is minimal at best. Lastly, there is limited evidence suggesting that lasers used in an adjunctive capacity to SRP may provide some additional benefit.

Er:YAG laser scaling of diseased root surfaces: a histologic study

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to observe the effects of an erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser when used to treat periodontally involved root surfaces.

METHODS

Forty teeth affected by severe periodontal disease and scheduled for extraction were divided into two groups: in group A (control), 20 teeth were treated by hand instrumentation, and in group B (test), 20 teeth were treated by Er:YAG laser.

RESULTS

In group A (teeth treated by curets), the root cementum layer was completely removed, but many deep scratches on the dentin layer were also observed. In group B, the laser-treated root surfaces, there was no cracking or carbonization, and the bacterial flora was completely eliminated, leaving a rough and uniform surface.

CONCLUSION

Results of the present study showed that clinical use of an Er:YAG laser in vivo achieves plaque and calculus removal, providing a rough surface morphology.

Short-term clinical and microbiologic effects of pocket debridement with an Er:YAG laser during periodontal maintenance

BACKGROUND

The erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser is considered a useful tool for subgingival debridement because the laser treatment creates minimal damage to the root surface and has potential antimicrobial effects. The aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate clinical and microbiologic effects of pocket debridement using an Er:YAG laser in patients during periodontal maintenance.

METHODS

Twenty patients at a recall visit for maintenance were consecutively recruited if presenting at least four teeth with residual probing depth (PD) > or = 5 mm. Two pockets in each of two jaw quadrants were randomly assigned to subgingival debridement using 1) an Er:YAG laser (test) or 2) an ultrasonic scaler (control). The laser beam was set at 160 mJ with a pulse frequency of 10 Hz. Clinical variables were recorded at baseline, 1 month, and 4 months after treatment. Primary clinical outcome variables were changes in PD and clinical attachment level (CAL). Microbiologic analysis of subgingival samples was performed at baseline, 2 days, and 30 days after treatment using a checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique against 12 periodontal disease-associated species.

RESULTS

The mean initial PD was 6.0 mm (SD: 1.2) in the test group and 5.8 mm (SD: 0.9) in the control group. At 1 month post-treatment, the PD reduction was significantly greater for test than control sites (0.9 versus 0.5 mm; P <0.05). The CAL gain also was significantly greater (0.5 versus 0.06 mm; P <0.01). At the 4-month examination, no significant differences were detected in PD reduction (1.1 versus 1.0 mm) or CAL gain (0.6 versus 0.4 mm). Both treatments resulted in reduction of the subgingival microflora. No significant differences in microbiologic composition were identified between the treatment groups at various time intervals. Degree of treatment discomfort scored significantly lower for the test than the control treatment modality.

CONCLUSION

The results of the trial failed to demonstrate any apparent advantage of using an Er:YAG laser for subgingival debridement, except less treatment discomfort perceived by the patients.

Effect of Er:YAG Laser on Diseased Root Surfaces: An In Vivo Study

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to observe in vivo the effects of two different power settings of an Er:YAG laser on pockets of periodontally involved root surfaces using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

METHODS

Thirty-two teeth with severe periodontal disease scheduled for extraction were divided into three groups: group A was irradiated with an energy of 140 mJ, 10 Hz; group B with 160 mJ 10 Hz; group C was used as controls. Morphological changes on the treated root surfaces were evaluated using SEM observations to assess laser-induced ultrastructural changes.

RESULTS

All surfaces treated in both groups showed a homogeneous and smooth root surface morphology. The surface alterations were very similar with both energy values used.

CONCLUSION

Er:YAG laser irradiation performed with two different power settings of root surfaces in vivo showed at the SEM observation a complete absence of debris and smooth root surfaces.
