Abstract
BACKGROUND The ageing population is growing rapidly, posing unique challenges in residential aged care facilities, especially regarding malnutrition among residents. Nutrition education for nursing staff is crucial for improving the quality of nutritional care and promoting healthy ageing. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to explore the current state of nutrition education interventions for nursing staff in residential aged care facilities and evaluate their effectiveness in enhancing resident care. METHODS This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the updated Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodological framework for scoping reviews, including studies published from January 2014 to July 2024. The review focused on interventions that aimed to improve nutritional knowledge, skills, and practices among nursing staff working in Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs), excluding studies unrelated to nutrition education, or involving non-nursing personnel. RESULTS Six studies met the inclusion criteria, revealing a combination of face-to-face and online educational interventions. The findings indicate significant improvements in the nutritional knowledge and practices of nursing staff, which correlates with better food intake and nutritional status among residents. However, the effectiveness varied, with some studies reporting minimal changes in specific health metrics. CONCLUSION The review highlights the potential of both face-to-face and online nutrition education interventions in enhancing the skills and practices of nursing staff. Although the results are mixed, they collectively emphasize the need for well-structured, sustained educational efforts that can adapt to the diverse needs of nursing staff and residents. Future research should focus on optimizing these interventions to consistently improve nutritional care in aged care settings.

Abstract
Good nutrition promotes a healthy population and mitigates the risk of disease. Integrating nutrition care in the primary healthcare system is considered an essential plan of action to manage poor nutritional status in the population. The role of primary healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the delivery of nutrition care is especially crucial due to a current lack of dietitians and dietary support in the primary care setting in Ireland. This qualitative research explored the current practice, barriers, facilitators, and feasible solutions proposed to optimize the provision of nutrition care by primary HCPs. Twenty semi-structured interviews (pharmacists (n = 14), dietitians (n = 3), a physiotherapist (n = 1), a speech and language therapist (n = 1), and a healthcare assistant (n = 1) were conducted. Six themes were derived from the data: current practice of nutrition care in primary care, perceived role, barriers and facilitators, the importance of a multidisciplinary patient-centred approach, training needs and preferences, and addressing barriers. Participants acknowledged the importance of nutrition care in clinical practice, the principal role of the dietitian as part of the multidisciplinary team, and the essential clinical competencies and nutrition training models that may facilitate the provision of nutrition care in primary practice. A paradigm shift to a multidisciplinary care model that prioritises the integration of nutrition care into primary care practice to ensure optimal dietary counselling is afforded to patients is essential.

Abstract
Malnutrition among community-dwelling older adults (OAs) is prevalent, particularly in groups using healthcare services. Malnutrition burdens health, social, and aged-care systems in terms of expenses for hospital admissions and care in nursing homes and home care settings. Effective management requires early identification and multimodal interventions; however, studies report a significant gap between recommended nutrition interventions and current healthcare practices. Therefore, this study aimed to identify, present, and map existing evidence on barriers and facilitators in the implementation of nutrition interventions among OAs living in noninstitutional municipal healthcare settings. A scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for Scoping Reviews checklist were conducted. The study included evidence from bibliographic databases and gray-evidence sources that identify barriers and/or facilitators from stakeholder perspectives that influence the implementation of nutrition interventions for malnutrition prevention or treatment among OAs (≥65 years) in noninstitutional municipal healthcare settings. Stakeholders were OAs, informal caregivers, or healthcare professionals (HCPs). Thirty-seven articles were included and 10 categories identified. Barriers were (1) lack of knowledge and awareness among HCPs, (2) lack of resources, (3) lack of collaboration and communication, (4) missing links between healthcare settings, and (5) poor insight among OAs and caregivers. Facilitators were (1) education and training of HCPs, (2) self-care, (3) person-centered care, (4) technology in nutrition care, and (5) social and psychological factors. Findings from this review indicate an imperative need for targeted implementation strategies for developing evidence-based nutrition home care practice.

Abstract
Malabsorption is a complex and multifaceted condition characterised by the defective passage of nutrients into the blood and lymphatic streams. Several congenital or acquired disorders may cause either selective or global malabsorption in both children and adults, such as cystic fibrosis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), coeliac disease (CD) and other enteropathies, lactase deficiency, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), autoimmune atrophic gastritis, Crohn's disease, and gastric or small bowel resections. Early recognition of malabsorption is key for tailoring a proper diagnostic work-up for identifying the cause of malabsorption. Patient's medical and pharmacological history are essential for identifying risk factors. Several examinations like endoscopy with small intestinal biopsies, non-invasive functional tests, and radiologic imaging are useful in diagnosing malabsorption. Due to its high prevalence, CD should always be looked for in case of malabsorption with no other obvious explanations and in high-risk individuals. Nutritional support is key in management of patients with malabsorption; different options are available, including oral supplements, enteral or parenteral nutrition. In patients with short bowel syndrome, teduglutide proved effective in reducing the need for parenteral nutrition, thus improving the quality of life of these patients. Primary care physicians have a central role in early detection of malabsorption and should be involved into multidisciplinary teams for improving the overall management of these patients. In this European consensus, involving 10 scientific societies and several experts, we have dissected all the issues around malabsorption, including the definitions and diagnostic testing (Part 1), high-risk categories and special populations, nutritional assessment and management, and primary care perspective (Part 2).

Abstract
Studies aimed at preventing age-associated diseases are fundamental in addressing the challenges posed by an aging population. However, biomedical and technological advancements have now reached a stage where it appears increasingly possible to repair the damage caused by severe pathologies and reverse the functional decline that accompanies aging. This perspective highlights the significance of using aging models, specifically non-transgenic geriatric mice (aged over 24 months), to study interventions aimed at reversing or ameliorating age-related pathologies. While most research typically utilizes young, adult, and mid-aged mice to investigate aging mechanisms and develop preventive strategies, geriatric models provide unique insights into the efficacy and safety of treatments in conditions that mimic the complexities of multiple concurrent diseases or syndromes. This manuscript highlights the importance of considering timing responses in aging interventions, illustrated by recent findings such as those involving canagliflozin. These studies reveal that the timing of intervention can significantly influence the outcomes, highlighting aspects often overlooked. Practical challenges and resource demands associated with geriatric mouse studies including concerns related to animal husbandry and aging phenotypes are also discussed. This perspective aims to foster a deeper understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of geriatric mice models in geroscience research and emphasizes the need for continued innovation in this field to meet the critical need to develop effective treatments for age-related diseases.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate district nurses' perceived and factual knowledge about nutritional care after an updated and expanded educational intervention. Furthermore, we aimed to compare the outcomes of the revised and the original educational intervention. BACKGROUND In-depth knowledge of nutritional care is a prerequisite to supporting older adults' well-being and health. District nurses' actual knowledge of the nutrition care process, older adults' need for food, and palliative care in diverse phases of disease is therefore of utmost importance. An updated and expanded educational intervention meeting these needs was evaluated. METHODS A study-specific questionnaire about nutritional care was used before and after the educational intervention. Participants (n = 118) were district nurses working in primary health care in Region Stockholm. Additionally, a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was used to assess differences in learning outcomes of the revised intervention compared with the original intervention. FINDINGS District nurses who completed the questionnaire had worked in health care for about 18 years and as district nurses for 5 years after their specialist examination. After the revised educational intervention, significant improvements were found in all statements concerning perceived challenges and actions related to nutritional care, while questions about factual knowledge showed significant improvements in three of the four questions.Comparison between the revised and the original intervention revealed no differences in most areas of perceived challenges and actions related to nutritional care. Additionally, in half of the areas assessed, factual knowledge improved more after the revision than after the original educational intervention, including the maximum length of overnight fast and the type of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) that should be prescribed. CONCLUSION The intervention was successful in increasing knowledge about nutritional care, nutritional counselling, food adaptation, and prescribing ONS in an individually tailored way. In-depth knowledge supports usability in clinical practice. Nevertheless, we need to follow-up and understand how increased knowledge about undernutrition and ONS prescription are implemented in primary health care when caring for older adults' desires and needs.

Abstract
This systematic review explores the impact of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), on cognitive decline in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Omega-3 fatty acids are widely recognized for their neuroprotective properties, but the evidence regarding their efficacy in mitigating cognitive decline remains mixed. Through a comprehensive analysis of eleven randomized controlled trials, we aimed to assess the role of DHA in improving cognitive functions and slowing brain atrophy. The findings revealed that DHA supplementation demonstrated cognitive benefits, particularly in memory and hippocampal volume preservation, in some studies involving early-stage cognitive decline, while others reported negligible effects, particularly in more advanced Alzheimer's disease. The review identified variations in study design, dosage, intervention duration, and population characteristics as potential factors contributing to the inconsistencies observed across trials. Despite these mixed outcomes, DHA's safety profile and potential for early intervention in at-risk populations offer promise for its use in clinical practice. This review underscores the need for further longitudinal, large-scale studies to refine DHA dosage recommendations, optimize intervention timing, and explore personalized approaches based on genetic factors. The insights gained from this review contribute to a growing understanding of the role omega-3 fatty acids could play in managing cognitive decline and highlight future directions for research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To verify whether shorter telomere length is associated with anorexia of ageing in community-dwelling older people. METHODS Conducted as a cross-sectional investigation, the study enrolled 448 participants residing in an urban area of a municipality in Brazil. Relative telomere length in blood samples was measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), whereas the presence of anorexia of ageing was determined using the Simplified Appetite Nutritional Questionnaire. Data analysis employed multiple logistic regression. RESULTS Among the 448 older individuals surveyed, 70.69% were female, and the predominant age bracket ranged from 60 to 69 years (45.08%). Approximately 25% exhibited the shortest telomeric length, with a corresponding anorexia of ageing prevalence of 41.16%. Older individuals with diminished telomere lengths displayed an increased likelihood of experiencing anorexia of ageing (odds ratio [OR] = 1.92; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12-3.29), independent of factors such as gender, age group, depressive symptoms, pain and performance in basic daily life activities. CONCLUSIONS The observed association between anorexia of ageing and a telomeric biomarker underscores the imperative to meticulously evaluate the nutritional dimensions of older people, with a view to implementing interventions that may enhance their overall health status.

Abstract
Background With the rise in people's living standards and aging populations, a heightened emphasis has been placed in the field of medical and health care. In recent years, there has been a drastic increase in nutrition management in domestic research circles. The mobile nutritional health management platform based on WeChat miniprograms has been widely used to promote health and self-management and to monitor individual nutritional health status in China. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of comprehensive scientific evaluation regarding the functionality and quality of the diverse range of nutritional miniprograms that have surfaced in the market. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the functionality and quality of China's WeChat nutrition management miniprogram by using the User Version of the Mobile Application Rating Scale (uMARS). Methods This observational study involves quantitative methods. A keyword search for "nutrition," "diet," "food," and "meal" in Chinese or English was conducted on WeChat, and all miniprograms pertaining to these keywords were thoroughly analyzed. Then, basic information including name, registration date, update date, service type, user scores, and functional scores was extracted from January 2017 to November 2023. Rating scores were provided by users based on their experience and satisfaction with the use of the WeChat miniprogram, and functional scores were integrated and summarized for the primary functions of each miniprogram. Moreover, the quality of nutrition management applets was evaluated by 3 researchers independently using the uMARS. Results Initially, 27 of 891 miniprograms identified were relevant to nutrition management. Among them, 85.2% (23/27) of them offered features for diet management, facilitating recording of daily dietary intake to evaluate nutritional status; 70.4% (19/27) provided resources for nutrition education and classroom instruction; 59.3% (16/27) included functionalities for exercise management, allowing users to record daily physical activity; and only 44.4% (12/27) featured components for weight management. The total quality score on the uMARS ranged 2.85-3.88 (median 3.38, IQR 3.14-3.57). Engagement scores on the uMARS varied from 2.00 to 4.33 (median 3.00, IQR 2.67-3.67). Functional dimension scores ranged from 3.00 to 4.00 (median 3.33, IQR 3.33-3.67), with a lower score of 2.67 and a higher score of 4.33 outside the reference range. Aesthetic dimension scores ranged from 2.33 to 4.67 (median 3.67, IQR 3.33-4.00). Informational dimension scores ranged from 2.33 to 4.67 (median 3.33, IQR 2.67-3.67). Conclusions Our findings from the uMARS highlight a predominant emphasis on health aspects over nutritional specifications in the app supporting WeChat miniprograms related to nutrition management. The quality of these miniprograms is currently at an average level, with considerable room for functional improvements in the future.

Abstract
Introduction The predictive ability of nutritional risk index on cardiovascular outcomes in middle-aged and non-hospitalized adults has not yet been reported. This study investigated whether the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), an index for assessing the risk of developing malnutrition, could predict heart disease in middle-aged Korean adults. Methods The cohort used in this study consisted of 3,783 participants selected from 10,030 Korean adults who participated in the Ansan-Ansung cohort study as part of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. The GNRI was determined based on serum albumin level, proportion of current weight, and ideal body weight. Participants were then divided into two groups: GNRI ≤98 and > 98, which corresponded to the risk of malnutrition and normal, respectively. The major outcome of this study was coronary artery disease (CAD) or congestive heart failure (CHF) during a 15-year-follow period. Results During the follow-up period spanning 2004-2018, 136 events of heart disease occurred. Using a Kaplan-Meier analysis, event-free rates were found to be associated with 90.5% on a GNRI ≤98 and 96.6% on a GNRI >98 (p < 0.0009). GNRI ≤98 showed a 3.2-fold (hazard ratio, 3.22; 95% credit interval, 1.49-6.96; p = 0.0029) increase in the incidence of heart disease, including CAD or CHF, compared with GNRI >98, after controlling for potential confounders. Conclusion Malnutrition risk confers a significantly increased risk for heart disease in middle-aged Koreans. Further studies with larger cohorts are needed to verify the efficacy of the GNRI in predicting disease risk in adults with pre-disease.

Abstract
Older people's health is strongly determined by their lifestyle, and its deterioration is a cause for concern and calls for effective efforts to slow down the process. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between diet quality and other non-food lifestyle elements. The data were collected in 2017 through a cross-sectional survey among 271 Polish elder citizens. A K-means cluster analysis was applied to separate homogeneous groups by lifestyle components (without diet) and a logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships between identified clusters and sociodemographic characteristics, nutritional knowledge and diet quality. Three homogenous clusters were identified, i.e., individuals with moderate physical activity and recommended sleep duration (pro-healthy), with low physical activity (low PA), and with short sleep (short sleep). Gender, age, education, place of residence, BMI, and health-promoting diet index (pHDI) did not differentiate adherence to clusters. The probability of being in the pro-healthy cluster increased with nutritional knowledge and declaring the same or better health status compared to peers, while it decreased when above-average financial status was reported. The obtained results importantly extend the previous findings by showing that the individual elements of lifestyle should be also perceived in the context of others. Further research focused on lifestyle as a whole might considerably support the implementation of multifaceted lifestyle interventions.
