Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of an additional layer of universal adhesive on the interfacial enamel/dentin-composite gap formation in relation to application mode and aging, via spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS In vitro class V cavities in 114 caries-free premolars were restored by applying one or two layers of a universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, SBU) in self-etch (se) and etch-and-rinse (er) mode or the reference adhesive OptiBond FL (OFL-er). The restorations were imaged by SD-OCT (six groups, n = 8) and SEM (n = 3) directly after filling (t1), water storage (t2, 24 h), embedding (t3), and thermo-mechanical loading (t4, TCML). The interfacial gaps were quantified using 26 parameters and analyzed using principal component analysis and linear mixed effect models. RESULTS Gap formation at enamel and dentin was significantly influenced by the adhesive, the application mode and number of layers (p < 0.001). This was due to the influence of the SBU-er mode (p < 1e-05), which showed significantly more gap formation and a greater range of variation with double application when compared to SBU-se and OFL. The fewest interfacial gaps occurred with one or two applications of OFL-er and one layer of SBU-er. SIGNIFICANCE Adhesive application mode and the number of adhesive layers are relevant factors in the tooth-composite bond failure. Double application worsened the adaptation of SBU to freshly prepared dentin conditioned with phosphoric acid.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate internal tooth-filling interfaces of composite fillings made using universal adhesives using micro-computed tomography (µCT). Sixty class V cavities were randomly assigned into six groups: Peak Universal etch and rinse (PER), Peak Universal self-etch (PSE), Adhese Universal etch and rinse (AER), and Adhese Universal self-etch (ASE). Two further adhesives considered gold standards were used as control groups: OptiBond FL (OER) for the etch and rinse technique and Clearfil SE for the self-etch technique (CSE). All teeth were subjected to thermomechanical loading and four-year water storage. Next, they were analyzed using µCT to investigate the internal tooth-filling interfaces. The proportions between the gap volume (GV) at the tooth-filling interface and the volume of applied composite filling (FV), between the gap and cavity volumes (CV), and between the gap volumes at the tooth-filling interface of the external (EGV) and internal (IGV) parts were calculated. Adhese Universal achieved the significantly lowest gap-to-filling- and gap-to-cavity-volume ratios for both types of etching techniques comparing to those of the Peak Universal and control groups. Significant differences between the gaps in external and internal parts of the tooth-filling interface were only noted in the control groups. Internal gap formation and development at the tooth-filling interface depend on the material as well as the type of its application.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the structural microporosity (MP) and marginal gap (MG) of different flowable composite resins placed with different instruments using micro-computed tomography (μCT).
Materials and Methods: Standard Class II MOD cavities were prepared on 108 lower third molar teeth. Three different flowable composite resins; Filtek Bulk-fill, SDR Bulk-fill and I-Flow conventional flowable composite resin were applied to the cavities using a sharp explorer, a microbrush or an injector. After they were covered with a paste-like nanohybrid composite resin, μCT images were examined in terms of MP and MG. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc tests.
Results: MP was observed less in explorer group than microbrush and injector groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between microbrush and injector groups (p > 0.05). i-FLOW flowable composite resin showed the highest MP rate compared to the other two groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between SDR and Filtek Bulk-fill in MP (p > 0.05). In terms of MG, i-FLOW presented higher MG values than other two materials (p < 0.05), while the instruments showed similar results (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: Additional occluso-gingivally vibration of flowable materials with an explorer may be useful in the placement. Bulk-fill composite resins are better than conventional flowable composite resin in terms of MP and MG.

Abstract
Introduction: The presence of gaps at the bonding interface of resin composite restorations is known to have an impact on restoration longevity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er, Cr:YSGG) laser irradiation on gap formation at the tooth–resin interface and to compare the reliability of micro-computed tomography (µCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) scans for gap formation assessment. Methods: Thirty standardized non-retentive class V cavities were prepared on sound human premolars using either an Er,Cr:YSGG laser or a round carbide bur (n=15 for each). A universal adhesive and A nano-filled resin composite were applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. After water storage for 24 hours at 37°C, the teeth were subjected to thermocycling. Gap formation assessments were performed by µCT (Skyscan 1173 µCT, Brucker, Belgium) and SEM (JEOL JSM-6610LV, Japan), and SPSS version 24.0 (IBM Inc., Chicago, USA) was used to analyze the data at P value<0.05. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the gap formation percentages. To compare the impact of both preparation and assessment methods, a non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test was used. Results: In enamel, similar gap formation values were detected for the two preparation methods (bur and laser). However, the laser-prepared group showed higher gap formation values in dentin. Additionally, higher gap formation values were reported for both preparation methods when µCT was used for assessment. Conclusion: Cavity preparation using a Waterlase laser led to higher gap formation percentages at the dentin–resin interface. In addition, SEM assessment is more reliable for assessing the tooth–resin interface.

Abstract
Dental composite is the most used aesthetic restorative biomaterial worldwide. However, it undergoes polymerisation shrinkage that could lead to loss of the interfacial seal between tooth and resin in some circumstances. This demands high-resolution imaging technologies to detect these defects. This study carried out a comparison between microcomputed tomography (micro-CT; Shimadzu, Japan) and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT; Santec, Japan) in the detection of marginal adaptation defects at the tooth-resin interface. Unlike in micro-CT, it was possible to outline interfacial gaps along with tooth-resin interfaces with SS-OCT, which was attributed to the Fresnel diffraction of light. This in vitro comparison demonstrates SS-OCT has great potential in dental imaging to effectively assess dental composite adaptation and marginal defects when high resolution is desired in real time. LAY DESCRIPTION: Detection of tooth-colored restoration defects had been assessed by different radiographic methods. However, most of these methods are either invasive or suffer from low-resolution. In this study, a comparison has been carried out between two different high-resolution imaging systems; microcomputed tomography and optical coherence tomography, to explore their potentials in detecting restorations defects. The results showed optical coherence tomography has a great accuracy in locating the underlying defects when the obtained images were validated against confocal laser scanning microscopy images.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE Secondary caries are the main reason for the failure of restorations, class II being the most affected. Techniques that promote less gap percentage are important.
