Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease initiated by plaque, which affects chewing and even general health. Ozone therapy, as a complementary means in the treatment of chronic periodontitis, numerous clinical trials have been conducted. We conducted this review to evaluate the effect of the ozone use accompanied by scaling and root planning (SRP) in periodontal treatment. METHODS Randomized controlled trials investigating the use of ozone therapy in chronic periodontitis. The search was carried out across PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and EMBASE databases with the search period extending to July 2024. The quality of the identified studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias tool. The results were presented as weighted mean differences (WMD) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using the I2 test. Data analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 and Stata 16.0. RESULTS Thirteen articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed statistically significant differences in probing depth (PD) and gingival index (GI) reduction between ozone-assisted nonsurgical periodontal treatment and placebo-assisted treatment in patients with chronic periodontitis (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in clinical parameters such as bleeding on probing (BOP) percentage, plaque index (PI), and clinical attachment level (CAL) (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Ozone therapy combined with SRP is superior to SRP alone in improving PD and GI indexes in patients with periodontitis, without increasing adverse reactions, and the effect is worthy of recognition. The research evidence indicates that ozone therapy in patients with chronic periodontitis has a positive effect.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dentin integrity is a critical aspect of tooth structure, with matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) playing a crucial role in dentinogenesis, caries formation, and dental bonding. It is crucial to accurately assess MMP activity to understand dentin pathophysiology and develop effective clinical strategies. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to conduct a thorough review and comprehensive summary of diverse techniques employed in assessing MMPs in dentin. DATA AND SOURCES To conduct the research, electronic databases were systematically searched and manual citation searches were performed. A total of 621 articles were identified. After eliminating duplicates and irrelevant studies, 70 articles were included in the review. 25 articles with overlapping methodologies were also excluded. STUDY SELECTION The selection criteria were based on the relevance of the studies to MMPs and MMP inhibitors in dentin without regard to the study design. Only peer-reviewed articles published in English were included. The search was restricted to studies published until November 2022. CONCLUSION The comprehensive analysis of various studies has yielded 37 techniques for evaluating MMPs and MMP inhibitors, which hold significant promise in creating diagnostic markers and devising targeted therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to review the literature on the efficacy of different surgical regenerative methods for peri-implantitis treatment. Methods A preliminary search was conducted in seven electronic databases. The studies included in the analysis implemented surgical regenerative treatment in at least one study group. Baseline and follow-up values for bleeding on probing (BoP), pocket depth (PD), plaque index (PI), bone level (BL), and bone gain (BG) were extracted. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated using Cohen's d or Hedges' g, and a random-effects-restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method was applied for the meta-analysis. Results Fifteen studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. The meta-analysis was performed on six studies comparing regenerative techniques that involved bone grafts with those that did not. The overall effect size for using bone grafts at the one-year follow-up was 0.04 (95% CI: -0.26‒0.35; P=0.78) for BoP, -0.08 (95% CI: -0.42‒0.27; P=0.66) for PD, 0.37 (95% CI: 0.08‒0.65; P=0.01) for PI, -0.44 (95% CI: -0.84 to -0.03; P=0.03) for BL, and 0.16 (95% CI: -0.68‒1.01; P=0.70) for BG. Conclusion Various materials have been employed for peri-implant defect filling and coverage. A bone substitute did not significantly improve BoP, PD, and BG values, while PI and BL were significantly ameliorated at one-year follow-up. However, recommending a single unified protocol as the most effective for surgical regenerative treatment of peri-implantitis was not feasible.

Abstract
Aim This study compares and evaluates the efficacy of ozonated water irrigation (OZI) and powered toothbrushing on the oral health and microbial status of mentally challenged individuals. Materials and Methods Thirty individuals of age range 15-30 years with a mild-to-moderate level of mental retardation (MR) and gingival inflammation participated in this double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial. Total duration of the study was 45 days consisting of two clinical phases (phase I, i.e., aided) and phase II, i.e. unaided) of the duration of 21 days in each phase, with a washout period of 3 days between the two phases. With a split-mouth design, sites from each subject were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: Powered Toothbrushing (PB) and OZI were randomly done for each half side of the mouth of each subject. Subgingival plaque samples were collected from sites of both the treatment groups and sent for microbial analysis. Clinical and microbial parameters were measured before and after the treatment. Results Significant improvement of the clinical and microbial parameters was found in both treatment groups. However, intergroup differences in the parameters were statistically nonsignificant. Conclusion OZI could serve as an alternative or adjunct to powered toothbrushes for people with MR.

Abstract
Periodontitis, a disease caused by inflammation of oral bacteria, contributes to the loss of alveolar bone and destruction of connective tissues. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a Gram-negative bacterium, is known to possess important pathogenic factors for periodontal disease. In this study, we investigated the anti-periodontitis effects of Magnolia kobus extract (MKE) and magnolin as a component of Magnolia kobus (MK) in murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Effects of MKE and magnolin on the mechanism of RAW 264.7 cellular inflammation were determined by analyzing nitric oxide (NO) production and Western blot protein expression (n = 3). MKE/magnolin inhibited NO production without affecting cell survival. MKE/magnolin treatment inhibited LPS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines, expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs such as MMP-1, 3, 8, 9, and 13), and protein levels of inflammatory mediators (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and mPGES-1). MKE/magnolin also suppressed NF-κB activation by inhibiting the TLR4 signaling pathway. These findings suggest that MKE has a therapeutic effect on inflammatory periodontal disease caused by oral bacterium P. gingivalis and that magnolin is a major functional component in the anti-inflammatory effect of MKE.

Abstract
Objectives: Complete elimination of the pathogenic microorganisms from the gingival sulcus area is the ultimate goal of any periodontal therapy. Certain factors such as anatomical variation of teeth, deep periodontal pocket, and tissue-invading ability of some bacteria decrease the effectiveness of conventional nonsurgical periodontal therapy, i.e., scaling and root planing (SRP). Hence, antimicrobial agents could be used as an adjunct to SRP, in order to increase the efficacy of it. Although Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the gold standard as an antiplaque agent, it has several drawbacks. Recently, ozone therapy is being tried for the treatment of several diseases in the field of dentistry. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of local application of CHX and ozonated olive oil as adjunctive to SRP for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Thirty individuals who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were selected for this split-mouth randomized controlled trial. The treatment sites from each individual were randomly allocated into two groups. Along with SRP, the local application of CHX and ozonated olive oil was done for the control and test sites, respectively. Pocket probing depth, relative attachment loss, and sulcus bleeding index were measured before and 3 months after the treatment. Intragroup and intergroup differences in the clinical parameters were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann–Whitney U test, respectively. Results: Three months' posttreatment, all the parameters showed significant improvement in both the groups. However, the intergroup comparison failed to be significant statistically. Conclusion: Ozonated olive oil could enhance the outcomes of SRP for the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to update the evidence of new approaches to non-surgical therapy (NSPT) in the treatment of periodontitis. Preclinical and clinical studies addressing the benefits of adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy, probiotics, prebiotics/synbiotics, statins, pro-resolving mediators, omega-6 and -3, ozone, and epigenetic therapy were scrutinized and discussed. Currently, the outcomes of these nine new approaches, when compared with subgingival debridement alone, did not demonstrate a significant added clinical benefit. However, some of these new alternative interventions may have the potential to improve the outcomes of NSPT alone. Future evidence based on randomized controlled clinical trials would help clinicians and patients in the selection of different adjunctive therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND On 30 January 2020, a public health emergency of international concern was declared as a result of the new COVID-19 disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This virus is transmitted by air and, therefore, clinical practices with the production of contaminant aerosols are highly at risk. The purpose of this review was to assess the effectiveness of bio-inspired systems, as adjuvants to nonsurgical periodontal therapy, in order to formulate bio-inspired protocols aimed at restoring optimal condition, reducing bacteremia and aerosols generation. METHODS A comprehensive and bibliometric review of articles published in English. Research of clinical trials (RCTs) were included with participants with chronic or aggressive periodontal disease, that have compared benefits for nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). RESULTS Seventy-four articles have been included. For probing depth (PPD) there was a statically significant improvement in laser, probiotic, chlorhexidine groups, such as gain in clinical attachment level (CAL). Bleeding on probing (BOP) reduction was statistically significant only for probiotic and chlorhexidine groups. There were changes in microbiological and immunological parameters. CONCLUSIONS The use of bio-inspired systems in nonsurgical periodontal treatment may be useful in reducing risk of bacteremia and aerosol generation, improving clinical, microbiological and immunological parameters, of fundamental importance in a context of global pandemic, where the reduction of bacterial load in aerosols becomes a pivotal point of clinical practice, but other clinical trials are necessary to achieve statistical validity.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for >90% of cases of oral cancer, including cancer at the lip and oral cavity and cancer at the oropharynx. Most OSCCs develop from oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), which consist of heterogeneous lesions with different malignant transformation potentials that make early detection of OSCC a challenge. Using a targeted mass spectrometry-based assay to compare multiple candidate proteins, we previously identified matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) as one of the most promising salivary OSCC biomarkers. To explore the clinical utility of MMP-1 in OSCC detection, we developed an in-house, sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measuring MMP-1 content, and tested it on saliva samples from 1160 subjects (313 healthy controls, and 578 OPMD and 269 OSCC patients) collected at two medical centers. Salivary MMP-1 levels measured by our in-house ELISA significantly discriminated OSCC patients from non-cancerous groups. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that MMP-1 was effective in separating non-cancer groups from patients with OSCCs at the oral cavity. Additionally, salivary MMP-1 levels in oral cavity cancer patients were highly correlated with tumor progression (tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and overall stage). Collectively, our results indicate that salivary MMP-1 is an effective biomarker for OSCC that can be sensitively detected using our newly developed ELISA. The newly developed MMP-1 ELISA may be used as a new adjunctive tool to aid in detecting and monitoring OSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is established that inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) by promoting insulin resistance and impaired beta cell function in the pancreas. Among the hypothesized independent risk factors implicated in the pathogenetic basis of disease, periodontal infection has been proposed to promote an amplification of the magnitude of the advanced glycation end product (AGE)-mediated upregulation of cytokine synthesis and secretion. These findings suggest an interrelationship between periodontal disease and type 2 diabetes, describing poor metabolic control in subjects with periodontitis as compared to nondiabetic subjects and more severe periodontitis in subjects with T2DM as compared to a healthy population, with a significant positive correlation between periodontal inflammatory parameters and glycated hemoglobin level. Results from clinical trials show that periodontal treatment is able to improve glycemic control in subjects with diabetes. Many therapeutic strategies have been developed to improve periodontal conditions in conjunction with conventional treatment, among which ozone (O3) is of specific concern. The principal aim of this trial was to compare the clinical effectiveness of an intensive periodontal intervention consisting of conventional periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy in reducing glycated hemoglobin level in type 2 diabetic patients and standard periodontal treatment. METHODS This study was a 12-month unmasked randomized trial and included 100 patients aged 40-74 years older, with type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed. All the patients received conventional periodontal treatment, or periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy in a randomly assigned order (1:1). The primary outcome was a clinical measure of glycated hemoglobin level at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months from randomization. Secondary outcomes were changes in periodontal inflammatory parameters. RESULTS At 12 months, the periodontal treatment in conjunction with ozone gas therapy did not show significant differences than standard therapy in decreasing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) level and the lack of significant differences in balance is evident. CONCLUSIONS Although the change was not significant, periodontal treatment in conjunction with the gaseous ozone therapy tended to reduce the levels of glycated hemoglobin. The study shows a benefit with ozone therapy as compared to traditional periodontal treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The gingivitis treatment protocols aim to stop the progression of inflammation and prevent the affliction of deeper periodontal tissues. Current research focuses on novel methods that can be applied with handheld and ultrasonic devices to increase the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal treatment. Ozone has been shown to have a strong antimicrobial effect against bacteria that play a role in the etiology of gingival/periodontal diseases. Research evaluating the effects of ozone gas on the treatment of gingival tissues is limited. AIM We investigated the effects of ozone application during the scaling procedure on clinical parameters of gingivitis in smokers and non-smokers and to investigate the efficacy of ozone gas in periodontal treatment. METHODS A total of 40 subjects, 27 males/13 females-20 smokers/20 non-smokers-with plaque-induced gingivitis, were selected. The patients underwent a single session of full-mouth supragingival and subgingival scaling. Gaseous ozone application was performed on a randomly selected maxillary quadrant. The other maxillary quadrant was designated as the control group receiving only initial periodontal treatment. Clinical parameters, such as PI, GI, GBTI, and PPD, were measured before and 1 week after treatment. RESULTS Our study shows that ozone therapy significantly improves clinical parameters in smokers and non-smokers when applied in addition to periodontal therapy. CONCLUSIONS Additional studies comparing the effect of ozone therapy on smokers and non-smokers to the effects of oral mouthwashes may provide valuable contributions to the field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review (SR) aimed at assessing the adjunctive clinical effect of ozone therapy (OT) on nonsurgical periodontal treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Articles published prior to September 2019 were electronically searched in four databases without any other date or language restrictions and manually searched in regular journals and in gray literature. This review was performed according to the PICO format. The eligibility criteria comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that analyzed the adjunctive effect of OT on nonsurgical periodontal treatment. RESULTS Twelve studies published between 2010 and 2019 were included in this SR. A metaanalysis of ten reports showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the periodontal parameters analyzed when scaling and root planing (SRP) plus sulcus irrigation with ozonated water or sulcus insertion of ozonated gas were used when compared to SRP alone. Additionally, there was no significant difference when the effect of SRP plus ozonated water was compared with SRP plus 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CLX). No studies reported significant microbiological differences when the use of ozone was compared with SRP alone. CONCLUSIONS The results of this SR do not support the use of OT for nonsurgical periodontal treatment. However, due to the potential heterogeneity across the studies, the presence of confounding factors, and the short follow-up of some included RCTs, these results should not be considered definitive. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The current evidence indicates that ozone has antimicrobial activity and good biocompatibility with periodontal cells and gingival fibroblasts. However, no evidence was found for a positive effect of OT as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Mechanical plaque control is an essential part of periodontal therapy. In the present study, the efficacy of ozone water irrigation as an adjunct to scaling and root planing was evaluated in the treatment of generalized chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods Twenty-four patients with chronic periodontitis selected for the study were randomly divided into Group A and Group B, receiving ozone water irrigation and distilled water irrigation, respectively, after scaling and root planing. Subgingival plaque was collected from the selected investigational teeth and was analyzed using BANA-Zyme™ Processor to evaluate the "red complex" periodontal pathogens. The clinical and microbiological parameters were recorded at baseline, 14 days, 21 days, and 2 months. Results The mean probing pocket depth scores for Group A and Group B at the baseline were 6.833 ± 1.193 and 7.833 ± 1.276; on day 14th, they were 6.616 ± 1.403 and 7.083 ± 1.378; on day 21st, they were 5.166 ± 0.937 and 6.083 ± 1.443;and on the 2nd month, they were 4.500 ± 0.797 and 5.166 ± 1.029, respectively. At the 2nd month, in Group A, 9 samples showed BANA negative and 3 samples showed BANA positive, and in Group B, 12 samples showed BANA negative and 0 sample showed BANA positive. The microbiological analysis showed a reduction in periodontal pathogens in both the groups. Conclusion Significant improvement in both clinical and microbiological parameters suggests that subgingival ozonated water irrigation could be an efficient adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
Objective: The goal of the present study was to determine the effect of systemic and topical ozone application on alveolar bone loss (ABL) by evaluating the effect of Hypoxia-inducible factor −1 alpha (HIF-1-α) and receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL)-positive cells on histopathological and immunohistochemical changes in a rat periodontitis model. Methodology: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: 1) Group C (control group); 2) Group SO (systemic ozone group) and 3) Group TO (topical ozone group). Experimental periodontitis was induced with a 3/0 silk suture placed at the mandibular left first molars of rats, and the suture was removed 14 days later. Ozone gas was injected intraperitoneally (0.7 mg/kg) in SO group. Topical ozone application protocol was performed using an ozone generator at 80% concentration (4th grade) 90- degree probe for the duration of 30 s. Both ozone applications were carried out for two weeks at intervals of two days. Histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analysis were performed. Results: ABL was significantly lower in Group SO compared to Group C (p: 0.0052). HIF-1α- positive cells were significantly lower in Group TO than in Group C (p: 0.0043). RANKL-positive cells were significantly lower in Group SO and in Group TO compared to the control group (p: 0.0033, p: 0.0075, respectively). Conclusion: Both ozone applications decreased RANKL-positive cell counts, TO application decreased HIF-1-α positive cells counts, and SO application was found to be more effective in reducing ABL compared to control group.

Abstract
Background Scaling and root planning (SRP) is the gold standard approach for treatment of chronic periodontitis but used alone it may not be effective in removing periodontal pathogens from sites where access is poor. Objective To evaluate and compare the clinical and microbiological efficacy of ozone and chlorhexidine (CHX) as an adjunct to SRP in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods Twenty-five patients with generalized moderate to severe chronic periodontitis with presence of at least one site in each quadrant with a probing depth ≥5 mm were recruited. In a split mouth study design, two quadrants were randomly allocated to the SRP and ozone therapy and the remaining two quadrants to SRP and CHX therapy. Plaque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) were assessed. Subgingival plaque samples were obtained for assessment of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). Results Both groups demonstrated significant intragroup reduction in PI, GI, PD, CAL, Pg count and Aa count from baseline to 3 months follow-up. There were no significant differences between two groups for any of the parameters. Conclusion Ozonated olive oil can be used as an adjunctive subgingival irrigant in patients with chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
Background/purpose The application of ozone as an adjunctive treatment represents a new approach in the management of chronic periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, biochemical and microbiological efficacy of ozone treatment as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP) patients. Materials and methods Eighteen patients (9 males and 9 females; aged from 28 to 47 years, mean age of 40 ± 6.51 years) with GCP were recruited in the study. In a split mouth design, two quadrants in each patient were randomly allocated to SRP-alone or SRP-ozone therapy (SRP + OT) groups by coin toss method. Subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were collected at baseline, following 1st and 3rd months. The clinical parameters were monitored at baseline and after 3 months. Microbiological parameters were analyzed by quantitative-PCR and GCF biomarkers were determined by ELISA. Results were analyzed statistically. Results Statistically significant improvements in all clinical parameters were accompanied by a reduction in microbiological and biochemical parameters in both treatment groups. SRP treatment resulted in a significant reduction of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) at 1st month and Tannerella forsythia (Tf) and Prevotella intermedia (Pi) at 3 months. Following SRP treatment the interleukin (IL)-8 levels were significantly reduced at month 1. There were no significant differences between two treatments for any of the parameters. Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, adjunctive ozone therapy did not provide additional benefits to clinical, microbiological and biochemical parameters over SRP in chronic periodontitis patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The decontamination procedure is a challenging aspect of surgical regenerative therapy (SRT) of peri-implantitis that affects its success. The purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of additional topical gaseous ozone therapy on the decontamination of implant surfaces in SRT of peri-implantitis. METHODS A total of 41 patients (22 males, 19 females; mean age, 53.55±8.98 years) with moderate or advanced peri-implantitis were randomly allocated to the test group (ozone group) with the use of sterile saline with additional ozone therapy or the control group with sterile saline alone for decontamination of the implant surfaces in SRT of peri-implantitis. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated over a period of 12 months. RESULTS At the 12-month follow-up, the plaque and gingival index values were significantly better in the ozone group (P<0.05). Probing depth decreased from 6.27±1.42 mm and 5.73±1.11 mm at baseline to 2.75±0.7 mm and 3.34±0.85 mm at the end of the 12-month observation period in the ozone and control groups, respectively. Similarly, the clinical attachment level values changed from 6.39±1.23 mm and 5.89±1.23 mm at baseline to 3.23±1.24 mm and 3.91±1.36 mm at the 12-month follow-up in the ozone and control groups, respectively. According to the radiographic evidence, the defect fill between baseline and 12 months postoperatively was 2.32±1.28 mm in the ozone group and 1.17±0.77 mm in the control group, which was a statistically significant between-group difference (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Implant surface decontamination with the additional use of ozone therapy in SRT of peri-implantitis showed clinically and radiographically significant. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) is a complex periodontal disease affecting the entire dentition with a rapid destruction of the periodontium and resulting in loss of teeth. We hypothesized that better clinical healing of adjunctive use of amoxicillin plus metronidazole combination may be related to the effect of this combination therapy to restore imbalance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP) which is associated with connective tissue and alveolar bone destruction in patients with GAgP. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight subjects diagnosed with GAgP were recruited. Patients were randomly assigned to test or control groups. MMP-1/TIMP-1 ratio was compared between groups receiving scaling and root planning (SRP) alone (control) or in combination with amoxicillin plus metronidazole (test). Clinical periodontal variables were measured. Gingival crevicular fluid samples were obtained and analyzed for MMP-1 and TIMP-1. Measurements were taken at baseline and repeated at 3 and 6 months after therapy. RESULTS Total MMP-1 levels were significantly decreased in both groups (P < 0.05) at 3 and 6 months. MMP-1 concentration levels showed a similar pattern to MMP-1 total levels decreasing significantly at 3 months (P < 0.05). TIMP-1 concentration levels increased in the test group throughout the study period, while the difference did not reach statistical significance (P > 0.05). TIMP-1/MMP-1 balance was restored in test group at 6 months significantly better than the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that metronidazole and amoxicillin combination as an adjunct to SRP results in better clinical healing through restoring TIMP-1/MMP-1 balance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ozone is a three-oxygen molecule (O3). Ozone therapy (OT) is systematically effective when pathological inflammatory and immunologic processes are activated. Among of these conditions are wound healing, macular degeneration related to aging, and conditions that are ischemic or infectious. AIMS The aim of this study was to determine the effects of OT on wound healing of intestinal anastomosis in the presence of peritonitis in a rat model. STUDY DESIGN Animal experimentation. METHODS A total of 40 Wistar albino rats were randomized into four groups (n=10) including: sham (S), peritonitis (P), ozone 0 (O0), and ozone 24 (O24). In group S, only cecal dissection was carried out. The S group had only a cecal dissection and intestinal anastomosis performed, but no peritonitis. In all other groups, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) followed the cecal dissection to induce bacterial peritonitis. 24 h after puncture, a cecal resection and ileocolic anastomosis were performed. In group P, 24 h after CLP, a cecal resection and ileocolic anastomosis were performed and no ozone was administered. In group O0, immediately after the anastomosis, and in group O24, starting 24 hours after the anastomosis, an intraperitoneal 1 mg/kg/day ozone administration was applied for seven days. On the seventh day the animals were sacrificed, the anastomotic bursting pressures (BP) and the hydroxyproline values of the anastomotic tissues were measured, and histopathologic examination of the anastomotic segment was carried out. RESULTS The highest BP was in group S, with 211±23.13 mmHg. The mean BP of group P was 141±56.25 mmHg, which was significantly lower than in the other two peritonitis groups that received ozone therapy, group O0 and O24, where it was 192±22 and 166±45 mmHg, respectively (p<0.05). The difference in the BP between groups O0 and O24 was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Histopathologic analyses of the anastomotic segments determined there was significantly more oedema and necrosis in the control group rats, and collagen deposition in the anastomotic tissue was significantly higher in the ozone-treated groups on postoperative day 7. Hydroxyproline levels were significantly higher in groups O0 and O24 compared to the peritonitis group (P). CONCLUSION Ozone therapy has a beneficial effect on anastomotic healing of the colon in the presence of peritonitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE We assessed periodontal status in patients with type 1 diabetes and healthy individuals in relation to their glycemic control, smoking and inflammatory biomarkers. MATERIAL/METHODS Periodontal status was examined in 107 patients with diabetes and 40 controls, using Oral Hygiene Index (OHI), Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and tooth number. CPI values of 0-2 and 3-4 were classified as non-periodontitis and periodontitis, respectively. Blood samples were analyzed for glucose, HbA1c, CRP, fibrinogen, interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). RESULTS Periodontitis was found in 15.0% of the controls and 57.9% of diabetic patients, including 40.0% of these with good metabolic control (GMC) and 59.5% of those with poor metabolic control (PMC). Severe periodontitis was more frequent in the PMC than in the GMC group and in the controls (26.0% vs. 20.0% vs. 5.0%). The PMC patients had lower number of sextants with CPI 0 and higher number of sextants with CPI 3 and CPI 4 as well as lower tooth number in comparison with the controls. The patients with periodontitis had higher TNF-α (p<0.001) and OHI (p<0.001) than the patients without periodontitis. The number of sextants with CPI 0 correlated negatively with fibrinogen and TNF-α levels, whereas the number of sextants with CPI 3 correlated positively with TNF-α and fasting glucose level. CONCLUSIONS There is good evidence that type 1 diabetes increases the risk of periodontal disease. Our results suggest that poor metabolic control of diabetes together with smoking and inadequate oral hygiene increase the risk of severe periodontal destruction in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are implicated in cancer cells invasion and metastasis processes and have been investigated as potential cancer biomarkers. In this study MMP-9 gene expression and MMP-9 -1562 C/T polymorphism in breast and non-small cell lung cancer patients' blood and tumor samples and its correlation with clinicopathological parameters were investigated. MATERIAL/METHODS MMP-9 gene expression was assessed by reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction method in 108 cancer patients' blood and tumor samples. MMP-9 -1562 C/T polymorphism was determined by the polymerase chain reaction - based restriction fragment length polymorphism method. RESULTS Significant relationship of MMP-9 gene expression and tumor differentiation grade was found only between groups with G1 and G3 breast tumors. Low survival rates were identified among positive MMP-9 expression in blood and ductal carcinoma of the breast (p=0.01) and negative progesterone receptor reaction (p=0.04). Significant differences in the distribution among genotypes were found between groups with stage I and stages III/IV (p=0.005) as well as between groups with lymph node status N0 and N1 (p<0.001). Breast cancer patients with tumor differentiation grade G3 and identified CC variant had a longer survival time (p=0.014). Shorter survival time was found among positive MMP-9 expression in tumor and stage I non-small cell lung cancer patients with negative lymph node (p=0.012) and squamous cell carcinoma (p=0.019). CONCLUSIONS Expression of MMP-9 in blood and tumor together indicates worse prognosis for breast cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of host-derived proteinases reported to mediate multiple functions associated with periodontal breakdown and inflammation. High MMP levels in African-American children with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) have been reported previously by the present authors. However, little is known about MMP reductions in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) after therapy. This study aims to evaluate MMP levels in the GCF after treatment of LAgP and to correlate these levels with clinical response. METHODS GCF samples were collected from 29 African-American individuals diagnosed with LAgP. GCF was collected from one diseased site (probing depth [PD] >4 mm, bleeding on probing [BOP], and clinical attachment level ≥ 2 mm) and one healthy site (PD ≤ 3 mm, no BOP) from each individual at baseline and 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment, which consisted of full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) and systemic antibiotics. The volume of GCF was controlled using a calibrated gingival fluid meter, and levels of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-12, and MMP-13 were assessed using fluorometric kits. RESULTS MMP-1, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-12, and MMP-13 levels were reduced significantly up to 6 months, comparable to healthy sites at the same point. Significant correlations were noted between MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-12, and MMP-13 levels and percentage of sites with PD >4 mm. MMP-3, MMP-12, and MMP-13 levels also correlated with mean PD of affected sites. CONCLUSION Treatment of LAgP with SRP and systemic antibiotics was effective in reducing local levels of specific MMPs in African-American individuals, which correlated positively with some clinical parameters.
