Beef embryos in dairy cows: calfhood growth of Angus-sired calves from Holstein, Jersey, and crossbred beef dams

Improved reproductive management has allowed dairy cow pregnancies to be optimized for beef production. The objective of this sire-controlled study was to characterize the effects of beef or dairy maternal genetics and the dairy management system on calf growth. Pregnancies were created with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of dam breed (Holstein or Jersey) and mating type (artificial insemination or implantation of an in vitro produced embryo from a commercial beef cow oocyte). Resulting calves were reared in a calf ranch. Additionally, commercial beef cows were inseminated and reared resulting calves on range. Therefore, the five treatments were Angus × Holstein (A × H; n = 19), Angus × Jersey (A × J; n = 22), Angus × beef gestated by Holstein (H ET; n = 18), Angus × beef gestated by Jersey (J ET; n = 8), and Angus × beef raised by beef (A × B; n = 20). Beginning at birth, calf body weight, cannon circumference, forearm circumference, top width, hip width, and hip height were measured approximately every 28 d until ~196 d of age. At birth, A × J calves weighed the least (P < 0.01). At 150 d of age, body weight was greatest (P < 0.05) among A × B calves, intermediate among H ET and A × H calves, and least among J ET and A × J calves (P < 0.05). Morphometric differences were detected between treatments (multivariate analysis of variance, P < 0.01). Primary discriminant function scores identified A × B calves having lesser values than A × J or A × H calves (analysis of variance [ANOVA], P < 0.01); A × B calves had greater cannon circumference, greater top width, and less hip height (standardized loadings of -0.47, -0.48, and 0.63, respectively). Secondary discriminant function scores identified J ET and H ET to have greater forearm circumference-a key indicator of muscling-than A × J or A × H (ANOVA, P < 0.01; standardized loading of 0.99). The dairy management system limited growth rate of beef genetics compared to the beef management system. In addition, Holstein dams transmitted greater growth potential than Jersey dams. Replacing maternal dairy genetics with beef genetics moderated frame size and created a more muscular phenotype.

Effects of forage provision to young calves on rumen fermentation and development of the gastrointestinal tract

Fifteen Holstein male calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments according to age and body weight (BW) to determine the effects of feeding different forages sources on rumen fermentation and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development. Treatments consisted of a starter (20% crude protein, 21% neutral detergent fiber) fed alone (CON) or supplemented with alfalfa (AH) or with oat hay (OH). All calves received 2L of milk replacer (MR) at 12.5% dry matter twice daily until 49 d of age. Calves received 2L of the same MR from 50 to 56 d of age and were weaned at 57 d of age. Individual starter, forage, and MR intakes were recorded daily and BW was recorded weekly. A rumen sample was taken weekly to determine rumen pH and volatile fatty acid concentrations. Three weeks after weaning, animals were harvested and each anatomical part of the GIT was separated and weighed with and without contents. Rumen pH was lower in CON than in OH and AH calves. Furthermore, acetate proportion in the rumen liquid tended to be greater in AH than in CON and OH treatments. Total GIT weight, expressed as a percentage of BW, tended to be greater in AH compared with the other 2 treatments. Rumen tissue tended to weigh more in CON than in OH animals. Animals with access to forage tended to have a greater expression of monocarboxylate transporter 1 than CON calves. In conclusion, calves supplemented with oat hay have a better rumen environment than calves offered no forage and do not have an increased gut fill.

Forage and splanchnic tissue mass in growing lambs: effects of dietary forage levels and source on splanchnic tissue mass in growing lambs

Forty-two crossbred lambs (33.4 kg initial body weight; twenty-four wethers and eighteen ewes) were used in a 42 d experiment with a 2 x 3 factorial treatment arrangement to determine effects of forage level and source on splanchnic tissue mass. Diets were 250 and 750 g/kg of chopped lucerne (Medicago sativa) (A), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) (RW) or bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) (B) hay, with the remainder being maize-based concentrate. Five lambs per treatment were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and measurements made of internal organs and contents of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) on the 7 d preceding slaughter was 0.89, 0.83, 0.90, 0.83, 0.77 and 0.61 (SE 0.05) kg/d, and live-weight gain was 0.20, 0.17, 0.18, 0.10, 0.10 and 0.07 (SE 0.02) kg/d for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. Total GIT mass (fresh) was higher (P < 0.05) for 750 than 250 g forage/kg and for B than RW (4.80, 4.57, 5.55, 5.84, 5.99 and 6.91 kg for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively). Non-fat organic matter was 259, 295, 292, 303, 277 and 264 g for the total GIT; 93, 102, 103, 106, 95 and 97 g for the reticulo-rumen (forage level x type (diet A v. diets RW and B) interaction; P < 0.05); and 204, 196, 202, 177, 156 and 127 g for the liver (SE 10) with diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. In summary, differences in properties of forage A and the grasses at 250 g/kg diet may have influenced GIT mass independent of energy intake and digesta mass. Conversely, with 750 g dietary forage/kg, higher digesta mass for diet B than diet RW appeared responsible for high reticulo-rumen mass relative to DOMI. Greater digesta mass for 750 than 250 g forage/kg may have elevated intestinal tissue mass/DOMI with diets A and B but not with diet RW, for which NDF digestibility was highest.

Increased weight gain and effects on growth parameters of Holstein heifer calves from 3 to 12 months of age

Two trials involving 280 Holstein heifer calves were to determine effects of increasing nutrient intake on growth (weight, height, and heart girth), dry matter intake, and water intake. In trial 1, 80 calves were fed from 60 to 172 d of age. More calf grower fed increased daily gain from .87 to .92 kg. Gain was further increased to .97 kg with higher energy content and to .99 kg with higher energy and higher protein content of calf growers. Alfalfa hay intake decreased as calf grower intake increased. Wither height and heart girth increased proportionally to body weight. Water intake was variable but proportional to dry matter intake. In trial 2, 114 heifers were fed alfalfa hay with either control or higher protein and higher energy heifer (accelerated program) growers from 187 to 369 d of age. Grass hay was fed to 86 heifers from 230 to 369 d of age with the same grower rations. Daily gain increased from .83 to .93 kg with the accelerated program. Hay intake decreased with higher grower intake on the accelerated program. When fed ad libitum on both programs, grass hay intake was about 5% lower than alfalfa hay. Heart girth at 369 d of age was increased on the accelerated program but there was no effect on wither height. Growth of Holstein heifers can be accelerated up to 1 kg daily gain from 3 to 12 mo of age without excessive fattening.

Effect of protein on growth of Holstein heifer calves from 2 to 10 months

Two trials involving 44 weaned Holstein heifer calves were to determine effects of protein on growth in weight and wither height, dry matter intake, and digestibility. In trial 1, 24 calves were fed according to requirements from 85 to 182 d of age, then at 80, 100, or 120% of recommended amounts for dietary protein content until 295 d. Weight at 295 d increased linearly with protein (280, 287, 298 kg), but wither height and dry matter intake were unaffected. In trial 2, 20 calves were fed 80, 100, or 120% of recommended protein from 71 to 182 d. Weight and wither height at 182 d responded quadratically to protein with highest values from the medium protein diet. From 183 to 295 d, trial 2 calves were rerandomized to diets of medium or high protein. Weight at 295 d was increased by high protein. An interaction between treatments for wither height indicated responses to high protein after 182 d for calves on low or medium protein before that time and a decrease for calves on high protein throughout. In male calves of similar age, elevated protein increased apparent protein digestibility but had inconsistent effects on digestibility of dry matter. Current protein recommendations appear adequate for calves to 6 mo of age but thereafter may be too generous.

Effect of stage of lactation and varying available energy intake on milk production, milk composition, and subsequent tissue enzymic activity

Twenty-four cows were allotted at parturition to receive one of four rations for 180 days. Rations were regular ad libitum (about 20% crude fiber), concentrate ad libitum (about 10% crude fiber), and restricted to recommended energy intake, and intermediate ration (14% crude fiber) ad libitum. Cows on concentrate consumed less dry matter, fiber and protein than intermediate and regular cows. Cows fed more forage gained more weight, had milk with higher protein and fat content, but were similar in milk production to those fed high concentrate. Fat test decreased to 4 wk in all treatments, and by 8 or 9 wk cows fed concentrate decreased to their lowest fat test. Concentrate restriction enhanced fat test beyond 8 wk. Ruminal propionate was higher and similar for both concentrate groups. Ruminal volatile fatty acids were higher, glucose slightly higher, and blood acetate lower for cows on ad libitum concentrate compared to intermediate. Mammary and adipose tissue from cows in midlactation were assayed for key enzymes of fatty acid synthesis. Activity of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase tended higher for concentrate rations in adipose tissue, but mammary tissue was 21 to 28 times as active. Mammary tissue was 7 to 10 times as active as adipose tissue in fatty acid synthetase with no difference in rations.

[Nutrient supply of health and sick fluid fed calves]

In the department for calves being fed with fluid feed of a specialised enterprise for calf rearing the daily intake of fluid feed (skim milk improved with milk substitute), concentrated feed and hay of a total of 341 female animals and the daily intake of energy and protein was calculated thereof. The average consumption of nutrients of the 206 healthy calves was compared with some international and national norms for the demand of nutrients. The comparison with some international values of demand and the results of the partial correlation analysis between energy and protein intake and live weight increase showed that the applied nutrition regime (particularly the kind of fluid feed) has resulted in an excessive supply of the calves with proteins and an insufficient supply with energy. This could not be realised from the GDR nutrients norm for the raising of calves published in 1976. Based on theoretical considerations and some recent findings of the science of nutrition we derived values of the protein and energy demand of our own. Subsequently an attempt is made to assess the supply with nutrients for sick calves.
