Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer death in the United States, accounting for approximately 51,000 deaths each year. We have previously shown in vitro chemopreventive effects of mixtures of aspirin, folic acid, and calcium (AFAC) on colon cancer cell lines. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the in vivo effects of orally administered, colon targeted chemopreventive combination regimens on the inhibition of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in a rat model of colon carcinogenesis using (i) unmodified (free drug) combinations of AFAC and (ii) nanoparticle-encapsulated combinations of the same agents. A 14-week animal study was conducted in three phases to determine an optimal effective dose from AFAC combinations and evaluate the efficacy of nanotechnology-based chemopreventive regimens administered in combined (mixtures) and individual (single entity) forms. ACF inhibition when compared with azoxymethane-treated rat control group was significant in both the unmodified and the modified nanoparticle-mediated chemopreventive regimens, showing a range of 31% to 38% (P < 0.05) and 50% to 75% (P < 0.001) reduction, respectively, in the number of ACFs. In addition, the nanoparticulate combination regimens of AFAC showed a 2-fold increase in suppression of ACF compared with free drug mixtures. Individual administration of nanoparticle-encapsulated drugs showed no significant effect on the reduction of ACF. Histochemical analysis provided further confirmation of chemopreventive effects, showing a significant reduction in cell nuclear proliferation. Overall, our results provide a strong proof of concept using nanoparticle-mediated combination treatment in the chemoprevention of colon cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enprocal is a high-protein micro-nutrient rich formulated supplementary food designed to meet the nutritional needs of the frail elderly and be delivered to them in every day foods. We studied the potential of Enprocal to improve gut and immune health using simple and robust bioassays for gut cell proliferation, intestinal integrity/permeability, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities. Effects of Enprocal were compared with whey protein concentrate 80 (WPC), heat treated skim milk powder, and other commercially available milk derived products. RESULTS Enprocal (undigested) and digested (Enprocal D) selectively enhanced cell proliferation in normal human intestinal epithelial cells (FHs74-Int) and showed no cytotoxicity. In a dose dependent manner Enprocal induced cell death in Caco-2 cells (human colon adencarcinoma epithelial cells). Digested Enprocal (Enprocal D: gut enzyme cocktail treated) maintained the intestinal integrity in transepithelial resistance (TEER) assay, increased the permeability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and did not induce oxidative stress to the gut epithelial cells. Enprocal D upregulated the surface expression of co-stimulatory (CD40, CD86, CD80), MHC I and MHC II molecules on PMA differentiated THP-1 macrophages in coculture transwell model, and inhibited the monocyte/lymphocyte (THP-1/Jurkat E6-1 cells)-epithelial cell adhesion. In cytokine secretion analyses, Enprocal D down-regulated the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1beta and TNF-alpha) and up-regulated IFN-gamma, IL-2 and IL-10. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that Enprocal creates neither oxidative injury nor cytotoxicity, stimulates normal gut cell proliferation, up regulates immune cell activation markers and may aid in the production of antibodies. Furthermore, through downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines, Enprocal appears to be beneficial in reducing the effects of chronic gut inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Stimulation of normal human fetal intestinal cell proliferation without cell cytotoxicity indicates it may also be given as infant food particularly for premature babies.

Abstract
This study is to evaluate the effect of dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (omega-3 PUFA) and/or calcium supplementation on colon tissue of the carcinogenic N-methyl-N-nitrosurea (NMU)-injected rats and to investigate this effect by the assessment of the oxidative stress. The rats were divided into four groups: those fed with a standard diet, with a diet supplemented by omega-3 PUFA, those fed with a diet with calcium, and those fed with a standard diet with the combination of omega-3 PUFA and calcium. Rats were injected with an intrarectal NMU. After 32 weeks, colon tissue specimens and plasma were taken to histopathologically investigate and analyze tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activities and erythrocyte MDA levels. The tumor incidences in supplemented-diet groups II and IV were found to be significantly lower when compared with those of the controls (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase antioxidative enzyme activities in colorectal tissue were increased in the study groups when compared with control rats (P < 0.001) and MDA levels were significantly lower than in the controls (P < 0.001) while the levels in group IV were rather decreased than those in group III (P = 0.011). These results suggest that the dietary supplementation of PUFA and/or calcium may be useful in the prevention of colorectal tumor formation.

Abstract
Patients with advanced colorectal cancer continue to have poor outcomes because of therapy-refractory disease. We previously showed that secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) gene and protein could function as a chemotherapy sensitizer by enhancing tumor regression in response to radiation and chemotherapy in tumor xenograft models of chemotherapy-resistant tumors. This function of SPARC was gleamed from a microarray analysis that also revealed down-regulation of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in therapy-refractory colorectal cancer cells. This study examines the potential synergistic effect of SPARC and vitamin D, which up-regulates VDR, in enhancing chemotherapy response in colorectal cancer. Using MIP101 colorectal cancer cell lines and SPARC-overexpressing MIP101 cells, we were able to show that, in the presence of SPARC, exposure to low doses of 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) significantly reduces cell viability, enhances chemotherapy-induced apoptosis, and inhibits the growth of colorectal cancer cells. Moreover, in tumor xenograft mouse models, up-regulation of VDR was seen in tumors that had the greatest regression following treatment that combined SPARC with chemotherapy. Therefore, our findings reveal a synergistic effect between SPARC and low doses of 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) that further augments the sensitivity of tumors to chemotherapy. This combination may prove to be a useful adjunct in the treatment of colorectal cancer, especially in those patients with therapy-refractory disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To update the evidence-based consensus opinion published by The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) in 2001 on the role of calcium in peri- and postmenopausal women. DESIGN NAMS followed the general principles established for evidence-based guidelines to create this document. A panel of clinicians and researchers acknowledged to be experts in the field of calcium and women's health was enlisted to review the previous position statement and data published since then, compile supporting statements, and make recommendations. Their advice was used to assist the NAMS Board of Trustees in publishing this position statement. RESULTS Adequate calcium intake (in the presence of adequate vitamin D status) has been shown to reduce bone loss in peri- and postmenopausal women and reduce fractures in postmenopausal women older than age 60 with low calcium intakes. Adequate calcium is considered a key component of any bone-protective therapeutic regimen. Calcium has also been associated with beneficial effects in several nonskeletal disorders, primarily hypertension, colorectal cancer, obesity, and nephrolithiasis, although the extent of those effects has not been fully elucidated. The calcium requirement rises at menopause. The target calcium intake for most postmenopausal women is 1,200 mg/day. Adequate vitamin D status, defined as 30 ng/mL or more of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (usually achieved with a daily oral intake of at least 400 to 600 IU), is required to achieve the nutritional benefits of calcium. The best source of calcium is food, and the best food source is dairy products. High-quality calcium supplements (taken in divided doses) are alternative sources for women unable to consume enough dietary calcium. There are no reported cases of calcium intoxication from food sources, and cases associated with supplements are rare (high intake levels of 2,150 mg/day have resulted in a 17% increase in renal calculi in one recent study, but not others). Because no accurate test to determine calcium deficiency exists, clinicians should focus instead on encouraging women to consume enough calcium to meet the recommended levels. CONCLUSIONS The most definitive role for calcium in peri- and postmenopausal women is in bone health, but, like most nutrients, calcium has beneficial effects in many body systems. Based on the available evidence, there is strong support for the importance of ensuring adequate calcium intake in all women, particularly those in peri- or postmenopause.

Abstract
The effects of a novel nutrient formulation Epican Forte (EF) were evaluated on proliferation and induction of apoptosis using non-cytotoxic concentrations against HTLV-1 positive (HuT-102 & C91-PL) and negative (CEM & Jurkat) cells. EF showed anti-proliferative effect as determined by MTT assay and TGF mRNA protein expression using RT-PCR. EF resulted in the down-regulation of TGF-alpha and an up-regulation in TGF-beta2. EF caused a significant increase in apoptotic cells in the preG1 phase. These results were confirmed using Cell Death ELISA and Annexin V-FITC. Induction of apoptosis was caused by an up-regulation of p53, p21 and Bax protein levels and a down-regulation of Bcl-2alpha protein expression level.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Vitamin E (VE) and other antioxidants may help prevent colon cancer by decreasing the formation of mutagens arising from the free radical oxidation of fecal lipids or by "non-antioxidant" mechanisms. VE is not a single molecule, but refers to at least eight different molecules, that is, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. METHODS Both animal models and human colon cancer cell lines were used to evaluate the chemopreventive potential of different forms of VE. Rats were fed diets deficient in tocopherols or supplemented with either alpha-tocopherol or gamma-tocopherol. Half the rats in each of these groups received normal levels of dietary Fe and the other half Fe at eight times the normal level. In our cell experiments, we looked at the role of gamma-tocopherol in upregulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) in the SW 480 human cell line. RESULTS Rats fed the diets supplemented with alpha-tocopherol had higher levels of VE in feces, colonocytes, plasma, and liver than did rats fed diets supplemented with gamma-tocopherol. Dietary Fe levels did not influence tocopherol levels in plasma, liver, or feces. For colonocytes, high dietary Fe decreased tocopherol levels. Rats fed the gamma-tocopherol-supplemented diets had lower levels of fecal lipid hydroperoxides than rats fed the alpha-tocopherol-supplemented diets. Ras-p21 levels were significantly lower in rats fed the gamma-tocopherol-supplemented diets compared with rats fed the alpha-tocopherol-supplemented diets. High levels of dietary Fe were found to promote oxidative stress in feces and colonocytes. Our data with the SW480 cells suggest that both alpha- and gamma-tocopherol upregulate PPAR-gamma mRNA and protein expression. gamma-tocopherol was, however, found to be a better enhancer of PPAR-gamma expression than alpha-tocopherol at the concentrations tested.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of dietary d-alpha-tocopheryl succinate (TS) in female rats, 20 mo (OLD) or 2 mo (YNG) of age, on azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and tissue distribution of d-alpha-tocopherol (alphaT), d-gamma-tocopherol (gammaT), and alphaTS. Rats were fed a commercial rodent chow supplemented with or without 1 (YNG) or 2 (OLD) g alphaTS/kg diet for 1 week prior to ip administration of AOM to induce colon ACF. The animals were sacrificed after 49 days of exposure. The results showed that OLD rats had significantly fewer ACF than YNG animals, and the percent body fat and serum triglycerides were significantly higher in the OLD group compared with the YNG. However, only OLD animals receiving alphaTS had significantly reduced numbers of larger ACF and significantly higher levels of colonic alphaT, gammaT, and alphaTS. These data support previous studies demonstrating that dietary alphaTS administration is protective against intestinal cancer. Also, this is the first study to show that alphaTS accumulates in most tissues following dietary exposure. We hypothesize that increased colon accumulation of fat-soluble vitamin E compounds and subsequent chemoprevention may be related to greater percent body fat and serum triglycerides in OLD animals receiving dietary TS.

Abstract
AIM: Cysteine peptidase (CP) and its inhibitor (CPI) are a matrix protease that may be associated with colorectal carcinoma invasion and progression, and vitamin E is also a stimulator of the immunological system. Our purpose was to determine the correlation between the expression of cysteine peptidases and their endogenous inhibitors, and the level of vitamin E in sera of patients with colorectal cancer in comparison with healthy individuals.
METHODS: The levels of cysteine peptidases and their inhibitors were determined in the sera of patients with primary and metastatic colorectal carcinoma and healthy individuals using fluorogenic substrate, and the level of vitamin E was determined by HPLC.
RESULTS: The levels of cysteine peptidases and their inhibitors were significantly higher in the metastatic colorectal cancer patients than that in the healthy controls (P<0.05). The activity of CP increased 2.2-fold, CPI 2.8-fold and vitamin E decreased 3.4-fold in sera of patients with metastasis in comparison with controls. The level of vitamin E in healthy individuals was higher, whereas the activity of cysteine peptidases and their inhibitors associated with complexes was lower than that in patients with cancer of the digestive tract.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the serum levels of CP and their inhibitors could be an indicator of the prognosis for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Vitamin E can be administered prophylactically to prevent digestive tract neoplasmas.

Abstract
We investigated the association between calcium intake and colorectal cancer in a prospective cohort of 45,354 women without a history of colorectal cancer who successfully completed a 62-item National Cancer Institute/Block food-frequency questionnaire. Women were followed for an average of 8.5 years, during which time 482 subjects developed colorectal cancer. We used Cox proportional hazards models, with age as the underlying time metric, to estimate risk of colorectal cancer. Cut points between quintiles of energy-adjusted dietary calcium were 412, 529, 656, and 831 mg/day. We created categories for calcium from supplements as follows: 0 mg/day (n = 25,441), 0 to 400 mg/day (n = 9,452), 401 to 800 mg/day (n = 4,176), and >800 mg/day (n =6,285). Risk ratios and confidence intervals (95% CI) for increasing quintiles of dietary calcium relative to the lowest quintile were 0.79 (0.60-1.04), 0.77 (0.59-1.02), 0.78 (0.60-1.03), and 0.74 (0.56-0.98), Ptrend = 0.05. For increasing categories of calcium from supplements, the risk ratios (and 95% CI) relative to no supplement use were 1.08 (0.87-1.34), 0.96 (0.70-1.32), and 0.76 (0.56-1.02), Ptrend = 0.09. Simultaneously high consumption of calcium from diet and calcium from supplements resulted in even further risk reduction, RR = 0.54 (95% CI, 0.37-0.79) compared with low consumption of both sources of calcium. These data indicate that a difference of < 400 to > 800 mg of calcium per day was associated with an approximately 25% reduction in risk of colorectal cancer, and this reduction in risk occurred regardless of the source of the calcium (i.e., diet or supplements).

Vitamin E is a generic term that describes a group of lipid-soluble chain-breaking antioxidants that includes tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E occurs in nature as eight structurally related forms that include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Vitamin E is a potent membrane-soluble antioxidant. Antioxidants like vitamin E (tocopherols) may prevent colon cancer through several different cellular and molecular mechanisms. Vitamin E in the American diet is primarily available in plant-oil rich foods such as vegetable oils, seeds and nuts and these foods vary widely in their content of alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol. Vitamin E may help prevent colon cancer by decreasing the formation of mutagens arising from the oxidation of fecal lipids, by decreasing oxidative stress in the epithelial cells of the colon and by molecular mechanisms that influence cell death, cell cycle and transcriptional events. Most epidemiological, experimental and clinical studies have evaluated the alpha-isoform and not the gamma-isoform of vitamin E. Recent epidemiological, experimental and mechanistic evidence suggests that gamma-tocopherol may be a more potent cancer chemopreventive agent than alpha-tocopherol. The differences in chemical reactivity, metabolism and biological activity may contribute to these differences in the effects of gamma-tocopherol when compared with alpha-tocopherol. The rationale supporting the development of gamma-tocopherol as a colorectal cancer preventive agent is reviewed here.

Abstract
Patients with a history of sporadic adenomas have increased epithelial cell proliferative activity, an intermediate risk marker for colorectal cancer. Reduction of proliferation by dietary intervention may reflect a decreased colorectal cancer risk. To evaluate whether calcium or resistant starch could reduce proliferative activity throughout the colon, we performed a randomized controlled trial in 111 sporadic adenoma patients. Patients received two placebos, 1 g of calcium + placebo, or 30 g of amylomaize (19 g of resistant starch) + placebo. After 2 mo, biopsies were collected from the cecum, transverse and sigmoid colon, and rectum during colonoscopy. Epithelial cell proliferation was determined by dividing the number of 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine-labeled nuclei by the total number of nuclei x 100 (labeling index, LI). LI of luminal, mid, and basal compartments was determined. Twenty-five patients dropped out. In the remaining 86 patients (28 treated with placebo, 30 with calcium + placebo, and 28 with resistant starch + placebo), no difference was observed in total LI, the LI of the three compartments, or the crypt length in the four areas of the colorectum. Colonic epithelial cell proliferative activity throughout the colon of sporadic adenoma patients is not affected by supplementation with 1 g of calcium or 19 g of resistant starch.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This review provides an overview of the principal hypotheses and epidemiological evidence of the possible links between colorectal cancer and intake of milk and/or dairy products. METHODS The first section outlines the main hypotheses about the possible effect of calcium, vitamin D, fats and other milk components. The possible role of acid lactic bacteria in fermented products is also discussed. The second section is a summary of the published epidemiological evidence. The results on milk, cheese and yoghurt are summarized using a meta-analytical approach. The results of studies on calcium and vitamin D are briefly described. RESULTS Case-control studies are heterogeneous and, on average, do not provide evidence of association between total intake of total dairy products, milk, cheese or yoghurt and colorectal cancer risk. The average result from cohort studies support the hypothesis of a protective effect of total dairy products (odds ratio (OR): 0.62; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.52-0.74; P heterogeneity test: 0.93) and for milk (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.68-0.95; P heterogeneity: 0.77). No association was found between cheese (OR: 1.10; 95% CI: 0.88-1.36; P heterogeneity: 0.55) or yoghurt (OR: 1.03; 95% CI: 0.83-1.28; P heterogeneity: 0.69) in cohort studies. CONCLUSIONS Cohort studies consistently found a protective effect of total dairy products and milk intake, but the evidence is not supported by case-control studies. No relationship was found with cheese or yoghurt intake. As the number of cohort studies is still limited, their results need to be confirmed by other prospective studies.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the patterns of cell proliferation in proximal and distal colons in normal rats and rats with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) induced carcinogenesis using the thymidine analogue bromodeoxyuridine.
METHODS: Colonic crypt cell proliferation was immunohistochemically detected using the anti-bromodeoxyuridine Bu20a monoclonal antibody.
RESULTS: Marked regional differences were found in both groups. Total labelling index (LI) and proliferative zone size in both normal (8.65 ± 0.34 vs 7.2 ± 0.45, 27.74 ± 1.07 vs 16.75 ± 1.45) and DMH groups (13.13 ± 0.46 vs 11.55 ± 0.45, 39.60 ± 1.32 vs 35.52 ± 1.58) were significantly higher in distal than in proximal colon (P < 0.05), although the number of cells per proximal crypt was greater (31.45 ± 0.20 vs 34.45 ± 0.39, 42.68 ± 0.53 vs 49.09 ± 0.65, P < 0.0001). Crypt length, total LI and proliferative zone size all increased in both proximal and distal regions of DMH rats compared to normal controls (P < 0.0001). In DMH-treated rat colon a shift of labelled cells to higher crypt cell positions was demonstrated distally whilst a bi-directional shift was evident proximally (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Our results show that changes in cell proliferation patterns, as assessed by bromodeoxyuridine uptake, can act as a reliable intermediate marker of colonic cancer formation. Observed differences between proliferation patterns in distal and proximal colon may be associated with the higher incidence of tumors in the distal colon.

Abstract
Considering the various stages of carcinogenesis and the numerous tumor types and available chemoprevention agents, knowledge of the etiology and the type of cancer to be treated, or possibly prevented, and understanding of the mechanisms by which agents exert their chemoprevention benefits may provide for improved strategy in designing therapeutic regimens. Because cancer usually develops over a 10- to 20-year period, it may be necessary for some agents to be provided before or early in the initiation steps of carcinogenesis to have beneficial effects. On the other hand, some agents may be more suitable for CRC prevention if provided at a later stage of carcinogenesis. Gene array, genomics, and proteomics are useful tools in advancing our understanding of the molecular events involved in carcinogenesis and in identifying markers of risk and surrogate end-points for colorectal cancer progression. These techniques may also serve for screening, identifying, and providing treatment targets for high-risk patients populations. Treatment could be developed depending on a patient's individual needs and genomic tumor profile. Clinical markers and surrogate end-points should be considered, together with molecular measurements, to more accurately assess risk. NSAIDs and COXIBs are clinically recognized as chemoprevention agents, and clinical trials evaluating their efficacy are ongoing. Treatment protocols, including dose and timing, remain to be determined, however. DFMO may best be used in combination with other chemoprevention agents. Dietary fiber and calcium supplements, as part of an overall low-fat diet, may decrease CRC risk. Long-term compliance with this regimen may be necessary to effect a beneficial outcome. Folate holds promise but needs further investigation, especially because its beneficial effects may depend on cancer type. Phytochemicals have been identified as strong candidates for use as agents to prevent colorectal cancer in cell culture and in rodent models of carcinogenesis. Their potential as chemoprevention agents must be demonstrated in clinical trials. In vitro and animal studies indicated that combination therapy may be a promising strategy over the monotherapy approach; clinical trials addressing the safety and efficacy of some combinations (DFMO/sulindac, fiber/calcium) are underway. The gastrointestinal tract and other organs are constantly exposed to a mixture of potentially toxic compounds and molecules considered favorable to health. Homeostasis between stress-mediated by toxic compounds and defensive mechanisms, is key for the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease. Whereas aggressive pharmacologic treatment may be necessary for patients at high risk for cancer, dietary supplements may be useful for populations at normal risk. The message for cancer prevention in the general population may well remain: keep a balanced healthy diet, eating a variety from all food groups, as part of a healthy lifestyle that includes moderate exercise.

Abstract
Chemopreventive strategies hold substantial promise for reducing the incidence of colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. This review focuses on recent advances in the identification of molecular targets and novel strategies for chemopreventive intervention. Many clinical trials are now in progress to assess the ability of synthetic agents or nutritional supplements to alter either the number of colorectal adenomas or biomarkers associated with colorectal tumorigenesis. Populations under study include genetically defined high-risk people and those with increased risk based on a personal history of colorectal neoplasia. A recent study showing that celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, can alter the natural history of polyp formation in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis has provided a benchmark for the clinical development of other chemopreventive agents and heightened awareness that colorectal cancer is a preventable disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) established a goal to review the published medical data and develop an evidence-based consensus opinion regarding the role of calcium in peri- and postmenopausal women. DESIGN In building this consensus opinion, NAMS followed the general principles established for evidence-based guidelines. As part of that process, NAMS appointed a panel of clinicians and researchers acknowledged to be experts in the field of calcium. Their advice was used to assist the NAMS Board of Trustees in developing this consensus opinion. RESULTS Adequate calcium intake (in the presence of adequate vitamin D intake) has been shown to prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk in peri- and postmenopausal women. Although calcium is not as effective as antiresorptive agents (e.g., estrogen, selective estrogen-receptor modulators, or bisphosphonates), it is an essential component of antiresorptive agent therapy for osteoporosis. Calcium has also been associated with beneficial effects in several nonskeletal disorders, primarily hypertension, colorectal cancer, obesity, and nephrolithiasis, although the extent of those effects and mechanisms involved have not been fully explored. Estimates of adequate intakes of calcium for peri- and postmenopausal women are based on evidence relating to osteoporosis prevention. At least 1,200 mg/day of calcium is required for most women; levels greater than 2,500 mg/day are not recommended. To ensure adequate calcium absorption, a daily intake of 400-600 IU of vitamin D is recommended, either through sun exposure or through diet or supplementation. Since no accurate test to determine calcium deficiency exists, clinicians should focus instead on ensuring that a woman consumes enough calcium to meet the recommended levels. CONCLUSION Although the most definitive role for calcium in peri- and postmenopausal women is in bone health, it is clear that adequate calcium intake has implications that encompass a woman's overall health. Based on the available evidence, a strong statement can be made regarding the importance of ensuring adequate calcium intake in all women, particularly those in peri- or postmenopause.
