Abstract
Yogurt, as a globally prevalent fermented dairy product, is renowned for its substantial nutritional value and a myriad of health benefits, particularly pertaining to the digestive system. This narrative review elucidates the latest advancements in yogurt development from 2019 to 2024, addressing aspects of microbiological safety, quality, functionality, sensory evaluation, and consumer perceptions across diverse protein sources. The intrinsic quality of yogurt is notably influenced by its primary ingredient, milk, traditionally derived from animals such as cows, goats, and sheep. In recent years, plant-based yogurt (PBY) have emerged as a popular alternative to traditional dairy yogurts, that are made from plant sources and offer similar textures and flavors, catering to those seeking nondairy options. This discussion encompasses the advantages and limitations of various sources and explores methodologies to enhance yogurt quality using these diverse sources. Ensuring the microbiological safety of yogurt is thus paramount to its quality, as it involves both preventing the presence of harmful pathogens and managing spoilage to maintain freshness. This article encapsulates the potential hazards and corresponding antibacterial strategies that safeguard yogurt consumption. These strategies include the use of natural preservatives, advancements in packaging technologies, and the implementation of stringent hygiene practices throughout the production process. Moreover, the quality of yogurt is dependent not only on the source but also on the fermentation process and additional ingredients used. By addressing both the prevention of pathogen contamination and the control of spoilage organisms, this article explores comprehensive approaches but also examines the use of high-quality starter cultures, the role of prebiotics in enhancing probiotic efficacy, and genetic advancements, as well as improvements in the overall nutritional profile and shelf life of yogurt. Techniques to improve texture, flavor, and nutrient content are also discussed, providing a comprehensive overview of current quality enhancement methods. This analysis delves into the intricate mechanisms underpinning probiotic development, including the roles of prebiotics, supplementary starter cultures, and genetic factors that facilitate probiotic proliferation. These benefits include improved digestive health, enhanced immune function, and potential reductions in the risk of certain chronic diseases. Beyond quality and functionality, the sensory evaluation of yogurt remains crucial for consumer acceptance. In recent years, the incorporation of diverse additional ingredients into yogurt has been observed, aimed at augmenting its sensory attributes. This examination reveals these ingredients and their respective functions, such as natural flavorings, sweeteners, and texturizing agents, with the ultimate goal of enhancing overall consumer satisfaction. Consumer preferences exert a profound influence on yogurt production, rendering the understanding of customer opinions essential for devising competitive industry strategies. This article consolidates consumer feedback and preferences, striving to elevate yogurt quality and promote dietary diversity. The analysis includes trends such as the growing demand for organic and nondairy yogurts, the importance of sustainable practices, and the impact of marketing and packaging on consumer choices. This comprehensive overview serves as a valuable reference for the dairy industry and researchers dedicated to the advancement of yogurt development.

Abstract
Purpose When consumed in appropriate quantities, probiotics, which are live microorganisms, are good for health. In this study, a mouse model of antibiotic-induced dyskinesia was established using a sterile mixed antibiotic solution to investigate the preventive impact of Limosilactobacillus fermentum ZS09 (LFZS09) on this condition in mice. Methods Following modeling, alterations in the serum and brain tissue of mice were assessed for motor measures such as running and swimming, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione, interleukin (IL-6, IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. The mouse cecum was used to evaluate the relative mRNA expression levels of the intestinal barrier genes, namely occludin-1, zona occludens-1 (ZO-1), and claudin-1. The relative mRNA expression levels of cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) genes in the mouse brain tissue were also evaluated. Results Compared with the model group, LFZS09 considerably increased the swimming and running duration of mice, significantly decreased the levels of the inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 and increased SOD expression in the mouse brain, and decreased MDA accumulation in the mouse brain and serum. Furthermore, LFZS09 upregulated occludin-1 gene expression in the cecal tissue to maintain the intestinal barrier, which in turn maintained the normal physiological function of the body. LFZS09 also enhanced the effect of BDNF and increased the expression of BDNF metabolic pathway-related genes, namely CREB, ERK1/2, and BDNF, in the mouse brain tissue. LFZS09 increased the number of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the gut of mice with motor dysregulation, and decreased the number of Enterococcus and Clostridium perfringens. Conclusion The findings indicate that LFZS09 regulates antibiotic-induced motor impairment in mice, thereby offering a theoretical foundation for future studies and probiotic or parabiotics production aimed at augmenting motor function.

Abstract
In the present study, a heteromannan primarily composed of mannose, fucose, xylose, glucose, and arabinose at a molar ratio of 4.78:1.18:1:0.82:0.11 containing a low proportion of glucuronic acid with weight-average molecular weights of 3.6 × 106 Da, named NTP, was prepared from the fruiting body of Tremella fuciformis. The anti-skin-aging effects of NTP on d-Galactose-induced aging mice and the biological mechanisms were investigated by an iTRAQ-based proteomics approach. NTP substantially mitigated skin aging characterized by a decreased loss of hydroxyproline and hyaluronic acid and reduced oxidative stress in the skin. Moreover, 43 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in response to NTP, of which 23 were up-regulated and 20 were down-regulated. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that these DEPs were mainly involved in the biological functions of cellular and metabolic regulations, immune system responses, and structural components. The findings provided new insights into the biological mechanisms underlying the anti-skin-aging actions of T. fuciformis-derived polysaccharides and facilitated NTP applications in naturally functional foods.

Abstract
In this study, strenuous forced exercise caused intestinal damage and reduced the exercise capacity of mice. However, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Lactobacillus pentosus CQZC02 (LPCQZC02) were found to improve both the intestinal barrier and exercise function in mice. The effectiveness of LPCQZC02 was confirmed through various methods, including kit detection, pathological observation, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and intestinal flora analysis. The findings demonstrated that LPCQZC02 could control colonic index, lessen colonic enlargement caused by intense exercise, and extend the running duration of mice. Serum levels of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), glutathione (GSH), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were elevated, whereas those of malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were reduced. The findings of the mRNA expression analysis revealed that in the colons of mice who remarkably exercised, LPCQZC02 could increase the expression levels of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin-1, and claudin-1 genes. Additionally, in skeletal muscle tissue, it could downregulate TNF-α expression level and upregulate copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) and manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) expression levels. Furthermore, LPCQZC02 could both reduce and promote beneficial bacteria in the intestines of mice undergoing intense exercise. In conclusion, LPCQZC02 emerged as a functional probiotic and demonstrated a notable advantage over sulfasalazine, a medication for intestinal conditions, in mitigating oxidative inflammation, repairing intestinal barrier damage, and enhancing motor function in mice subjected to strenuous exercise.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the potential impact of the intervention of Lactiplantibacillus plantatum HFY11 (LP-HFY11) on colitis using in vivo animal trials. The impact of LP-HFY11 intervention on colitis was determined by measuring the levels of relevant indicators in the intestine, colon, and blood after oxazolone-induced colitis in BALB/c mice. The results of the trial show that LP-HFY11 improved the colon weight-to-length ratio, reduced the colitis-induced colon length shortening, and reduced colonic abstinence. Furthermore, it decreased the levels of myeloperoxidase, nitric oxide, and malondialdehyde activities while increasing the glutathione content in the colon tissue of colitis-affected animals. LP-HFY11 lowered the interleukin-10 (IL-10) level and increased the IL-2 level in the serum of colitis mice. LP-HFY11 also upregulated the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, endothelial nitric oxide synthase, c-Kit, and stem cell factor (SCF), and downregulated the expression of IL-8, C-X-C chemokine receptor type 2 (CXCR2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the colon tissue of mice with colitis. LP-HFY11 decreased the expression of Firmicutes in the gut while increasing the expression of Bacteroidetes, Bifidobacteria, and Lactobacillus. This indicates that LP-HFY11 could control physiological alterations in the serum and colon tissue, as well as the expression of gut microorganism.

Abstract
Introduction Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus AFY06 (LR-AFY06) is a microorganism isolated from naturally fermented yogurt in Xinjiang, China. Methods In this study, we investigated the effects and mechanisms of LR-AFY06 in a mouse model of inflammation-associated colon cancer. The mouse model was established by azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) induction. The tumor number in intestinal tissues was counted, and the histopathological analysis was performed on colon tissues. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction were performed to measure relevant protein levels in colon tissues. Results LR-AFY06 treatment alleviated weight loss, increased organ index, reduced intestinal tumor incidence, improved histopathological damage, decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the serum and colon tissue, downregulated the mRNA expression of inhibitor of NF-κB beta (IκBβ), p65, p50, p52, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), and B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-xL) in colon tissues, and increased the mRNA expression of Bid and caspase-8. The high concentration of LR-AFY06 exerted a better effect than the low concentration; however, the effect was slightly inferior to that of aspirin. Moreover, LR-AFY06 mitigated the intestinal inflammatory process and inhibited intestinal tumor development by regulating the NF-κB and apoptosis pathways. Discussion The present study indicates the regulatory potential of LR-AFY06 in inflammation-associated colorectal cancer in mice, providing a valuable basis for further research.

Abstract
Valproate (valproic acid, VPA), a drug for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder, causes liver steatosis with enhanced oxidative stress. Accumulating evidences exhibite that gut microbiota plays an important role in progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, whether gut microbiota contributes to VPA-caused hepatic steatosis needs to be elucidated. A mixture of five probiotics was selected to investigate their effects on liver steatosis and oxidative stress in mice orally administered VPA for 30 days. Probiotics treatment significantly attenuated the hepatic lipid accumulation in VPA-treated mice via inhibiting the expression of cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) and distinct diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2). Meanwhile, probiotics exerted a protective effect against VPA-induced oxidative stress by decreasing the pro-oxidant cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) level and activating the Nrf2/antioxidant enzyme pathway. Moreover, VPA treatment altered the relative abundance of gut microbiota at the phylum, family and genera levels, while probiotics partially restored these changes. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that several specific genera and family were significantly correlated with liver steatosis and oxidative stress-related indicators. These results suggest that probiotics exert their health benefits in the abrogation of liver steatosis and oxidative stress in VPA-treated mice by manipulating the microbial homeostasis.

Abstract
This literature review aimed to collect investigations on the in vivo evidence for bacteria associated with fermented dairy foods to behave as probiotics with beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. All main bacterial groups commonly present in high numbers in fermented milks or cheeses were taken into account, namely starter lactic acid bacteria (SLAB) Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and lactis, L. helveticus, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, non-starter LAB (NSLAB) Lacticaseibacillus spp., Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, dairy propionibacteria, and other less frequently encountered species. Only studies regarding strains of proven dairy origin were considered. Studies in animal models and clinical studies showed that dairy bacteria ameliorate symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mucositis, metabolic syndrome, aging and oxidative stress, cancer, bone diseases, atopic dermatitis, allergies, infections and damage caused by pollutants, mild stress, and depression. Immunomodulation and changes in the intestinal microbiota were the mechanisms most often involved in the observed effects. The results of the studies considered indicated that milk and dairy products are a rich source of beneficial bacteria that should be further exploited to the advantage of human and animal health.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is highly prevalent in an ageing society. The increased incidence and mortality rates of CVD are global issues endangering human health. There is an urgent requirement for understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of CVD and developing possible interventions for preventing CVD in ageing hearts. It is necessary to select appropriate models and treatment methods. The D‐galactose‐induced cardiac ageing model possesses the advantages of low mortality, short time and low cost and has been increasingly used in the study of cardiovascular diseases in recent years. Therefore, understanding the latest progress in D‐galactose‐induced cardiac ageing is valuable. This review highlights the recent progress and potential therapeutic interventions used in D‐galactose‐induced cardiac ageing in recent years by providing a comprehensive summary of D‐galactose‐induced cardiac ageing in vivo and in vitro. This review may serve as reference literature for future research on age‐related heart diseases.

Abstract
Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is a widely used anticancer drug that can cause liver injury, but there is no effective treatment available at present. The antioxidant properties of Lactobacillus plantarum Lp2 in vitro and its effect on CTX-induced liver injury in mice were investigated thoroughly. The order of antioxidant capacity of the fermentate of Lp2 was as followed: fermented supernatant > cell-free extract > intact cell. BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with 80 mg/kg BW/d CTX for 3 days to build a liver injury model, then treated with Lp2 fermented supernatant (Lp2-s) and Lp2 culture broth (Lp2). After 10 days, the indicators of oxidative stress and liver injury were measured. Both Lp2-s and Lp2 restored the levels of T-SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, MDA, GSH, ALT, and AST. The western blotting results showed that Lp2-s and Lp2 ameliorated CTX-induced oxidative damage and hepatocyte apoptosis via inhibiting MAPKs pathway and strengthening Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 antioxidant defense system, thus inhibiting the mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis pathway. Therefore, both Lp2-s and Lp2 had similar protective effects on CTX-induced liver injury.

Abstract
Aging is a progressive, unalterable physiological degradation process of living organisms, which leads to deterioration of biological function and eventually to senescence. The most prevalent factor responsible for aging is the accumulation of damages resulting from oxidative stress and dysbiosis. D-galactose-induced aging has become a hot topic, and extensive research is being conducted in this area. Published literature has reported that the continuous administration of D-galactose leads to the deterioration of motor and cognitive skills, resembling symptoms of aging. Hence, this procedure is employed as a model for accelerated aging. This review aims to emphasize the effect of D-galactose on various bodily organs and underline the role of the Lactobacillus sp. in the aging process, along with its anti-oxidative potential. A critical consideration to the literature describing animal models that have used the Lactobacillus sp. in amending D-galactose-induced aging is also given. KEY POINTS: • D-Galactose induces the aging process via decreasing the respiratory chain enzyme activity as well as ATP synthesis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and increased ROS production. • D-Galactose induced aging primarily affects the brain, heart, lung, liver, kidney, and skin. • The anti-oxidative potential of Lactobacillus sp. in improving D-galactose-induced aging in animal models via direct feeding and feeding of Lactobacillus-fermented food.

Abstract
A mouse thrombosis model was established by kappa-carrageenan to observe the inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus KSFY07 (LDSB-KSFY07) on thrombosis and the oxidative stress response. Mouse serum, liver tissue-related indicators, and intestinal microbial composition were measured by examining the expression of microbes in mouse faeces using a biochemical kit, slice observations, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) experiments. The results showed that LDSB-KSFY07 effectively reduced the degree of black tail in thrombotic mice, increased activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and decreased thrombin time (TT), fibrinogen (FIB), and prothrombin time (PT) in thrombotic mice. LDSB-KSFY07 was also able to reduce malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increase superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in the serum and liver tissues of thrombotic mice. Pathological observations showed that LDSB-KSFY07 reduced liver tissue lesions and tail vein thrombosis. Further, experimental results showed that LDSB-KSFY07 was able to upregulate the mRNA expression of copper/zinc-SOD (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese-SOD, and GSH-Px in the liver tissue of thrombotic mice. Moreover, LDSB-KSFY07 was also able to downregulate the mRNA expression of NF-κB p65, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin in tail vein vascular tissue. Meanwhile, LDSB-KSFY07 could raise plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) mRNA expression and reduce tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) expression in heart and tail vein vascular tissues of thrombotic mice. A mouse faeces examination revealed that LDSB-KSFY07 could also upregulate Bacteroides, Lactobacterium, and Bifidobacterium microbial expression and downregulate Firmicutes expression in the gut. These results indicate that LDSB-KSFY07 was able to inhibit mouse thrombosis and reduce liver oxidative stress damage in thrombus mice and show that high concentrations of LDSB-KSFY07 provided a better response similar to that of the drug heparin.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and gut dysbiosis are important risk factors for hypertension. In this study, the preventive effect of Bifidobacterium longum CCFM752 (CCFM752) on hypertension was evaluated. 5-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were treated with vehicle or CCFM752 (1.0 × 109 CFU day-1) for 12 weeks. The increase in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure was significantly prevented by CCFM752 treatment. Simultaneously, CCFM752 prevented aortic fibrosis and hypertrophy and increased aortic endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity. CCFM752 presented an antioxidative effect by inhibiting aortic NADPH oxidase activation and increasing aortic and serum catalase activity, and reducing aortic reactive oxygen species (ROS). The gut dysbiosis of SHR, including the increased Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, decreased Actinobacteria as well as reduced α-diversity, were restored by CCFM752. CCFM752 also increased the prevalence of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, while decreasing Turicibacter at the genus level. Furthermore, serum metabolomic analysis revealed that CCFM752 up-regulated serum proline and pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate, both of which were negatively correlated with blood pressure. In conclusion, the positive impact of CCFM752 on the gut microbiota may contribute to the antioxidative effect as well as its preventive effect on hypertension.

Abstract
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) is the main chemical causing liver damage. In this experiment, the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum HFY15 treatment on CCl4 -induced acute liver injury was investigated using mice. Fifty adult mice were randomized into five study groups, each group with 10 ml kg-1 saline, 50 mg kg-1 silymarin, and 109 CFU kg-1 L. plantarum HFY15 and LDSB per day, and all the mice expect the normal group were injected 0.8% CCl4 (10 ml kg-1 ) on the 14th day. Following the 16 h induction of the liver injury, various biochemical markers were assessed for blood and liver tissue. After L. plantarum HFY15 treatment, the content of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglycerides (TG), malondialdehyde (MDA), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in serum decreased by 67.7%, 65.0%, 41.9%, 59.5%, and 51.5%, respectively, and the level of antioxidant enzymes (total superoxide dismutation [T-SOD], catalase [CAT], glutathione [GSH]) increased by more than twofold. Pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-γ (INF-γ), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) decreased by more than 45% in serum and live. What is more, L. plantarum HFY15 increased the expression of antiapoptosis genes Bcl-2 by eightfold, inhibiting the expression of proapoptotic genes Caspase-3 and Bax by about threefold. Lactobacillus plantarum HFY15 has obvious protective effects on CCl4 -induced liver injury by inhibiting oxidation, reducing the release of inflammatory factors, and exerting suppressive effect on apoptotic process in the CCl4 -induced liver injury. Lactobacillus plantarum HFY15 can be developed as edible lactic acid bacteria for preventing liver toxicity. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: L. plantarum HFY15 can alleviate liver injury caused by carbon tetrachloride toxicity through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic pathways.

Abstract
PURPOSE Probiotics, as live microorganisms that improve intestinal microbial balance, have been implicated in the modulation of neurodegenerative diseases via the microbiome-gut-brain axis by improving gut dysbiosis. This review examines the association between probiotics and neurocognitive function in age-related dementia. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane library for in vivo studies using equivalent combinations of "probiotics" and "dementia" as per PRISMA. From the 52 in vivo studies identified, 5 human and 22 animal studies with comparable quantitative outcomes on neurocognitive/behavioural function were meta-analysed by forest plots, subgroup analysis and meta-regression. The analysis of biomarkers, risk of bias and publication bias were also performed. RESULTS In elderly humans, probiotics correlates with a non-significant difference of neurocognitive function in Mini-Mental State Examination, but with significant improvement only in those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In animals, probiotics significantly improved neurocognitive function as measured by Morris Water Maze, Y-Maze, and Passive Avoidance. Further analysis by subgrouping and meta-regression found that the probiotics-neurodegeneration association is age dependent in humans but is neither dose dependent nor duration dependent in animals or humans. Analysis of biomarkers suggested that the neurocognitive effect of probiotics is associated with an altered gut microbiome profile, downregulated proteinopathic, inflammatory and autophagic pathways, and upregulated anti-oxidative, neurotrophic, and cholinergic pathways. CONCLUSION Overall, we report promising results in animal studies but limited evidence of probiotics leading to neurocognitive improvement in humans. More research into probiotics should be conducted, especially on live biotherapeutic products for targeted treatment of gut dysbiosis and age-related dementia.

Abstract
This study investigated the antiasthmatic and anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus plantarum-CQPC11 (LP-CQPC11) on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic Balb/c mice. Administration of different doses of LP-CQPC11 (105 , 107 , and 109 colony-forming unit [CFU]/mouse) effectively reduced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and the lung W/D ratio in asthmatic mice. LP-CQPC11 treatment reduced the accumulation of inflammatory cells in the BALF and attenuated histologic edema in asthmatic mice. Administration of LP-CQPC11 decreased the serum levels of OVA-specific IgE, IgE, and OVA-specific IgG1. LP-CQPC11 treatment decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-4, IL-13, IL-5, and IL-6) in the BALF of asthmatic mice. In addition, LP-CQPC11 also elevated the mRNA levels of Foxp3 and T-bet and decreased the mRNA levels of Gata3 and RORγt in asthmatic mice lungs. Administration of LP-CQPC11 also reduced OVA-induced oxidative stress by improving the activities of GSH-Px, SOD, and catalase in the lungs. Finally, LP-CQPC11 treatment also significantly decreased the activation of the NF-κB pathway to modulate the inflammatory reaction in the lungs of asthmatic mice. The results from this study clearly demonstrated that oral administration of LP-CQPC11 exhibited outstanding activity in attenuating OVA-induced asthma in a mouse model. Furthermore, LP-CQPC11 may be an effective microecologic agent in preventing allergic asthma in the future. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Allergic asthma is a common chronic inflammation-associated respiratory disease. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are known as a health product involved in modulating immune tolerance and play important roles in disease prevention and treatment. Many studies have reported that LAB, as probiotics, exhibits great antioxidation, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities and have health benefits in gastrointestinal disorders. In fact, human studies have confirmed that Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains have an effective activity to reduce the risk of allergic asthma. LP-CQPC11 was isolated from Sichuan pickled cabbages (a type of LAB-fermented vegetable product, also called Sichuan paocai) and was reported to reduce d-galactose-induced aging in mice in our previous study. However, the antiasthmatic and anti-inflammatory activities of LP-CQPC11 are unclear. The current study investigated the antiasthmatic and anti-inflammatory effects of LP-CQPC11 on OVA-induced asthmatic Balb/c mice.

Abstract
With the implementation of modern scientific protocols, the average human lifespan has significantly improved, but age-related problems remain a challenge. With the advent of ageing, there are alterations in gut microbiota and gut barrier functions, weak immune responses, increased oxidative stress, and other age-related disorders. This review has highlighted and discussed the current understanding on the significance of gut microbiota dysbiosis and ageing and its inherent effects against age-related oxidative stress as well as on the gut health and gut-brain axis. Further, we have discussed the key mechanism of action of Lactobacillus strains in the longevity of life, alleviating gut dysbiosis, and improving oxidative stress and inflammation to provide an outline of the role of Lactobacillus strains in restoration of gut microbiota dysbiosis and alleviating certain conditions during ageing. Microbiota-targeted interventions of some characterized strains of probiotic Lactobacillus for the restoration of gut microbial community are considered as a potential approach to improve several neurological conditions. However, very limited human studies are available on this alarmed issue and recommend further studies to identify the unique Lactobacillus strains with potential anti-ageing properties and to discover its novel core microbiome-association, which will help to increase the therapeutic potential of probiotic Lactobacillus strains to ageing.

Abstract
There has been considerable research on oxidative stress and inflammation, and their relationship with degenerative diseases. This study investigated the effect of Lactobacillus fermentum HFY06 on aging mice induced by D-galactose. The results showed that L. fermentum HFY06 inhibited the atrophy of the brain, kidneys, liver, and spleen, increased serum SOD, GSH, CAT, and MDA, and decreased IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. Quantitative PCR showed that L. fermentum HFY06 upregulated the expression of Nrf2, γ-GCS, NOS1, NOS3, SOD1, SOD2, and CAT in the liver and brain tissues, but decreased the expression of NOS2. Western blot analysis showed that L. fermentum HFY06 effectively upregulated the protein expression of SOD1, SOD2, and CAT in the livers and brains of mice. These results suggest that L. fermentum HFY06 can effectively alleviate D-galactose-induced aging in mice, and may activate the Nrf2 signaling pathway and increase the levels of downstream regulatory inflammatory factors and antioxidant enzymes. In conclusion, consumption of L. fermentum HFY06 may prevent aging or reduce oxidative stress.

Abstract
Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are an important part of human gut microbiota. Among numerous benefits, their antioxidant properties are attracting more and more attention. Multiple in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, along with their cellular components, possess excellent antioxidant capacity, which provides a certain degree of protection to the human body against diseases associated with oxidative stress. Recently, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria have begun to be considered as a new source of natural antioxidants. This review summarizes the current state of research on various antioxidant properties of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Special emphasis is given to the mechanisms of antioxidant activity of these bacteria in the human gut microbiota, which involve bacterial cell components and metabolites. This review is also dedicated to the genes involved in the antioxidant properties of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains as indicators of their antioxidant potential in human gut microbiota. Identification of the antioxidant biomarkers of the gut microbiota is of great importance both for creating diagnostic systems for assessing oxidative stress and for choosing strategies aimed at restoring the normal functioning of the microbiota and, through it, restoring human health. In this review, the practical application of probiotic strains with proven antioxidant properties to prevent oxidative stress is also considered.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effect of Lactobacillus plantarum SCS2 (L. plantarum SCS2). After 1 week of acclimation, 120 male KM mice were divided into normal group (NG), model group (MG), solvent control group (KG), and different test groups (TG1, TG2, TG3) (n = 20/group) randomly. In the second week, except NG mice, other mice were given 0.2 ml 50 mg/kg (body weight) streptozocin (STZ) through intraperitoneal injection for 5 days. After successful modeling, NG and MG mice were fed normally, KG mice was given 0.5 ml 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer saline (PBS) per day, TG1, TG2, and TG3 mice were given 0.5 ml suspension, intracellular content and heat-killed intracellular content of L. plantarum SCS2 per day for 9 weeks. Body weight and blood glucose were observed and recorded during intragastric administration. Glucose tolerance levels were measured at the twelfth week, then mice were sacrificed and the serum was collected to measure insulin (INS), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant enzymes. The results showed that the reduction of weight loss in TG1 and TG2 mice was observed, which was consistent with the blood glucose. At the same time, the INS level of TG1, TG2, and TG3 mice were increased and the HbA1c levels were decreased. Otherwise, the MDA and ROS content in the serum of TG1, TG2, and TG3 mice were decreased and the level of antioxidant enzymes was increased. Interestingly, the activity and content of antioxidant enzymes in TG2 group was the highest in the three test groups. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The results of this study showed that L. plantarum SCS2 could effectively reduce blood glucose, relieve weight loss, improve INS deficiency, and also improve oxidative stress by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The findings suggest that L. plantarum SCS2 could improve diabetes-related symptoms by alleviating oxidative stress. In the future, people could promote the application of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) which is found in traditional foods with the ability of improving oxidative damage in food nutrition and related fields, so as to guide residents to form good dietary habits, and effectively prevent type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, it also can enhance the edible value of traditional foods.

Abstract
Probiotics and prebiotics for preventing and alleviating the degenerative changes associated with aging have received extensive attention. In the present work, Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) 69-2 with the highest antioxidant capacity combined with galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) was used in aging model mice to evaluate the effect on aging and the regulation of gut microbiota. The combination of L. plantarum 69-2 and GOS supplementation could significantly (P < 0.05) improve liver function, antioxidant capacity, and inflammation accompanied by regulating the gut microbiota, increasing the short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels, and activating the hepatic AMPK/SIRT1 regulatory pathway. The results showed that L. plantarum 69-2 and GOS could activate the hepatic AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway by regulating the gut microbiota and metabolites through the liver-gut axis to restore hepatic antioxidant activity to alleviate aging. The study provided a new insight for targeting the gut microbiota to relieve aging through the gut-liver axis.

Abstract
Aging is the process spontaneously occurred in living organisms. Cardiac fibrosis is a pathophysiological process of cardiac aging. Mangiferin is a well-known C-glucoside xanthone in mango leaves with lots of beneficial properties. In this study, rat model of cardiac fibrosis was induced by injected with 150 mg/kg/d D-galactose for 8 weeks. The age-related cardiac decline was estimated by detecting the relative weight of heart, the serum levels of cardiac injury indicators and the expression of hypertrophic biomakers. Cardiac oxidative stress and local inflammation were measured by detecting the levels of malondialdehyde, enzymatic antioxidant status and proinflammatory cytokines. Cardiac fibrosis was evaluated by observing collagen deposition via masson and sirius red staining, as well as by examining the expression of extracellular matrix proteins via Western blot analysis. The cardiac activity of profibrotic TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway was assessed by measuring the expression of TGF-β1 and the phosphorylation levels of p38 and MK2. It was observed that mangiferin ameliorated D-galactose-induced cardiac aging, attenuated cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis, as well as inhibited the activation of TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway. These results showed that mangiferin could ameliorate cardiac fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging rats possibly via inhibiting TGF-β/p38/MK2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an essential role in cardiovascular diseases and the antioxidative effects of probiotics have been widely reported. To screen the probiotic strains that may prevent cardiovascular diseases, we tested the antioxidative effects of supernatants of different Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains on A7R5 cells. Preincubation with supernatants of B. longum CCFM752, L. plantarum CCFM1149, or L. plantarum CCFM10 significantly suppressed the angiotensin II-induced increases in ROS levels and increased catalase (CAT) activity in A7R5, whereas CCFM752 inhibited NADPH oxidase activation and CCFM1149 enhanced the intracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity simultaneously. Treatment with CCFM752, CCFM1149, or CCFM10 supernatants had no significant impact on transcriptional levels of Cat, Sod1, Sod2, Nox1, p22phox, or p47phox, but altered the overall transcriptomic profile and the expression of genes relevant to protein biosynthesis, and up-regulated the 60S ribosomal protein L7a (Rpl7a). A positive correlation between Rpl7a expression and intracellular CAT activity implied that Rpl7a may participate in CAT synthesis in A7R5. Supernatant of CCFM752 could also down-regulate the expression of NADPH oxidase activator 1 (Noxa1) and angiotensinogen in A7R5. Collectively, the probiotic strains CCFM752, CCFM1149, and CCFM10 exhibited antioxidative attributes on A7R5 cells and might help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Codonopsis pilosula is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that exerts an anti‑aging effect and can regulate the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for the anti‑aging effects of Codonopsis pilosula in the GI tract of mice with D‑galactose‑induced aging. First, a successful mouse model of aging was established, and Codonopsis pilosula water extract was then used for treatment. The anti‑aging effects of Codonopsis pilosula on the GI tract were then detected from the perspectives of tissue structure, physiological function and cell ultrastructure. Finally, in order to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms, the expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs in the stomach and intestine were examined using microarray technology. A total of 117 (41 lncRNAs and 76 mRNAs) and 168 (85 lncRNA sand 83 mRNAs) differentially expressed genes associated with the anti‑aging effects of Codonopsis pilosula were identified in the stomach and intestine, respectively. Through integrated analysis of the stomach and intestine, 4 hub RNAs, including 1 lncRNA (LOC105243318) and 3 mRNAs (Fam132a, Rorc and 1200016E24Rik) were identified, which may be associated with the anti‑aging effects of Codonopsis pilosula in the GI tract of aging mice. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed that the metabolic pathway was an important pathway underlying the anti‑aging effects of Codonopsis pilosula in the GI tract. On the whole, in the present study, 4 hub RNAs associated with these effects and their regulatory networks were found in the GI tract of aging mice. In addition, the metabolic pathway was found to play an important role in these anti‑aging effects in the GI tract.

Abstract
Osteoporosis, an imbalance in the bone-forming process mediated by osteoblasts and the bone-resorbing function mediated by osteoclasts, is a bone degenerative disease prevalent among the aged population. Due to deleterious side effects of currently available medications, probiotics as a potential treatment of osteoporosis is an appealing approach. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the beneficial effects of two novel Lactobacilli strain probiotics on bone health in ovariectomized (OVX) induced osteoporotic mice model and its underlying mechanisms. Forty-five 9-week-old Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice underwent either a sham-operation (n = 9) or OVX (n = 36). Four days after the operation, OVX mice were further divided into four groups and received either saline alone, Lactobacillus plantarum GKM3, Lactobacillus paracasei GKS6 or alendronate per day for 28 days. After sacrifice by decapitation, right distal femur diaphysis was imaged via micro-computed tomography (MCT) and parameters including bone volume/tissue volume ratio (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured. Moreover, GKM3 and GKS6 on RANKL-induced osteoclast formation and osteoblast differentiation using in vitro cultures were also investigated. The results showed that both probiotics strains inhibited osteoporosis in the OVX mice model, with L. paracasei GKS6 outperforming L. plantarum GKM3. Besides this, both GKS6 and GKM3 promoted osteoblast differentiation and inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation via the Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP) and RANKL pathways, respectively. These findings suggested that both strains of Lactobacilli may be pursued as potential candidates for the treatment and management of osteoporosis, particularly in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the preventative effect of Lactobacillus fermentum HFY06 on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in Kunming mice. Mice were treated with HFY06, then liver damage was induced using CCl4. Evaluation indicators included the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triglycerides (TG), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum; cytokines levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in serum; and related gene expressions of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), TNF-α, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), and catalase (CAT). Liver tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin for pathological analysis. Compared with the model group, HFY06 reduced the liver index, increased the serum SOD and GSH-Px activities, and reduced the AST, TG, and MDA activities in the mice. Inflammation-related IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ levels were also reduced after treatment with a high dose of HFY06. Pathological observation showed that CCl4 damaged the mouse livers, which were significantly improved after treatment with silymarin and HFY06. qPCR also confirmed that the high dose of HFY06 (109 colony-forming units [CFU] per kg per day) upregulated the mRNA expression of the antioxidant genes, Cu/Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, and CAT, in the liver tissue and downregulated the mRNA expression of the inflammatory factors, NF-κB, TNF-α and COX-2, but HFY06 was less effective than silymarin. These findings indicate that HFY06 prevented CCl4-induced liver damage in vivo but was less effective than silymarin. Thus, HFY06 may have a potential role in treating liver diseases. Abstract
Yogurt from Xinjiang, China, is a traditional Chinese fermented food rich in beneficial microorganisms, such as Lactobacillus plantarum KSFY06. In this study, the effect of KSFY06 on oxidative aging was investigated using live animal experiments. Molecular biological methods were used to analyze the serum and tissues of mice with oxidative aging induced by d-galactose, which showed that KSFY06 can inhibit the decline of heart, liver, spleen, and kidney caused by aging. The KSFY06 strain increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH) in serum and liver of aging mice, while the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) is reduced. Pathological observation showed that KSFY06 alleviated damage to the liver, spleen, and skin of oxidative aging mice. qPCR showed that, at high dose (2 × 109 cfu/kg per day), KSFY06 upregulates copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), catalase (CAT) mRNA expression, and its downstream inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression in liver and spleen tissues induced by d-gal. To a certain extent, these findings indicate that L. plantarum KSFY06 is able to protect against oxidative stress in the d-gal-induced aging model. In conclusion, L. plantarum KSFY06 may provide a potential research value in the prevention or alleviation of related diseases caused by oxidative stress.
