Abstract
Malnutrition is a common complication of chronic pancreatitis (CP) and liver cirrhosis (LC). Inadequate food intake is considered a relevant driver of malnutrition in both entities. However, the contribution of habitual diet to impaired nutritional status is unclear. In a prospective, multicenter cross-sectional study, we recruited patients with confirmed CP or LC and healthy volunteers as a control group. Malnutrition was diagnosed according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria. We comprehensively investigated habitual dietary intake on nutrient, food group, and dietary pattern level applying two validated food frequency questionnaires. We included 144 patients (CP: n = 66; LC: n = 78) and 94 control subjects. Malnutrition was prevalent in 64% and 62% of patients with CP or LC, respectively. In both CP and LC, despite slightly altered food group consumption in malnourished and non-malnourished patients there were no differences in energy or nutrient intake as well as dietary quality. Compared to controls patients showed distinct dietary food group habits. Patients consumed less alcohol but also lower quantities of fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain products (p < 0.001, respectively). Nevertheless, overall dietary quality was comparable between patients and healthy controls. Nutritional status in CP and LC patients is rather related to disease than habitual dietary intake supporting the relevance of other etiologic factors for malnutrition such as malassimilation or chronic inflammation. Despite distinct disease-related differences, overall dietary quality in patients with CP or LC was comparable to healthy subjects, which suggests susceptibility to dietary counselling and the benefits of nutrition therapy in these entities.

Abstract
Objectives Patients with digestive diseases frequently suffer from dyspepsia and malabsorption, which may lead to muscle loss due to malnutrition. However, it is not clear whether digestive diseases are associated with sarcopenia. This study aims to explore the longitudinal association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults based on a nationally representative survey from China. Methods We used a prospective cohort study including 7,025 middle-aged and older adults aged ≥45 years from the 2011 to 2015 waves China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Digestive diseases were identified using self-report. The assessment of sarcopenia was based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 Consensus and included three components of muscle strength, physical performance, and muscle mass. Cox hazards regression was used to examine the association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia. Results The prevalence of digestive diseases and the incidence of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults were 22.6% (95% CI = 21.6-23.6%) and 8.5% (95% CI = 7.8-9.1%). After adjusting for 15 covariates composed of three sets (demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and health status), digestive diseases were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia (HR = 1.241, 95% CI = 1.034-1.490, P < 0.05). The associations were more pronounced among men, older adults aged 60-79, rural residents, and married people. In addition, the association between digestive diseases and sarcopenia was robust in the sensitivity analysis. Conclusion Digestive diseases were associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults aged ≥45 years. Early intervention of digestive diseases may help to reduce the incidence of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
Background The predictive role of sarcopenia in cancer prognosis is an area of increasing concern. However, the influence of sex difference on the predictive role of sarcopenia in cancer prognosis has not been clearly defined. This retrospective cohort study investigated the effect of preoperative sarcopenia on the long-term outcomes of patients with gastric cancer (GC) based on sexual dimorphism. Methods Preoperative abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans from 379 GC patients who underwent radical gastrectomy were carefully analyzed. The patients were categorized into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups according to the L3 skeletal muscle index (L3 SMI) measured on CT scans. Moreover, other indexes which can be used to evaluate the muscle area or the muscle quality, including skeletal muscle area (SMA), visceral fat area (VFA), subcutaneous fat area (SFA), skeletal muscle radiation attenuation (SM-RA), visceral fat index (VFI), subcutaneous fat index (SFI), and subcutaneous and visceral ratio (SV), were obtained from CT scans. Results There were 254 men and 125 women included in our study. After calculation, we defined sex-specific SMI-related mortality cutoff as 39.73 and 32.97 cm2/m2 for men and women. Univariable analysis showed that pathological tumor-node-metastasis (pTNM), depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, differentiation degree, preoperative sarcopenia (for men), SMA (for men), L3 SMI, SFA (for women), SFI (for women), SV (for women), and SM-RA (especially for men) were significant independent predictors of overall survival (OS). Multivariable analysis showed that pTNM, depth of invasion, poor differentiation, and SM-RA were significantly associated with 5-year OS in GC patients. However, CT-determined sarcopenia was associated with significantly worse OS only in men, and SFA was significantly associated with 5-year OS only in women. Conclusion SM-RA is a reliable prognostic factor in patients with GC after radical gastrectomy. The impact of indexes mentioned above on survival outcomes is dependent on sex. CT-determined preoperative sarcopenia, a muscle-related indicator, was associated with outcomes in men. Adipose-related indicator (SFA), instead, was associated with outcomes in women.

Abstract
Background and Aim Sarcopenia is a problem affecting inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) outcome and should be evaluated by measuring muscle mass (using dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry [DXA]), muscle strength, and physical performance. DXA has drawbacks as it is expensive, not covered by a national program, and requires a technician. Other inexpensive and simple examinations are needed. The objective is to explore cutoff point and diagnostic accuracy of thigh circumference (TC), calf circumference (CC), subjective global assessment (SGA), and handgrip strength (HGS) to identify sarcopenia in IBD patients. Methods The study was conducted in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital during November 2020–June 2021. Analysis was performed to discover the cutoff point and diagnostic accuracy of TC, CC, SGA, and HGS to identify sarcopenia. Results As assessed by DXA, 7 of 60 women (11.7%) with IBD had sarcopenia. Using CC cutoff ≤31 cm, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ration (PLR), and negative likelihood ratio (NLR) were 100%, 60.38%, 25%, 100%, 2.52, and 0, respectively. Using TC cutoff ≤50 cm, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, PLR, and NLR were 100%, 83.02%, 43.75%, 100%, 5.90, and 0, respectively. SGA has sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, PLR, and NLR of 42.86%, 84.91%, 27.27%, 91.84%, 2.84, and 0.67, respectively. The area under curve of HGS was 33.3%. Conclusion In this survey of Indonesian women with IBD, the frequency of sarcopenia was 11.7%. When compared with DXA, TC and CC values over 50 cm and 31 cm, respectively, were helpful to exclude the diagnosis of sarcopenia. SGA and HGS were of lesser value for the identification of a decrease in muscle mass.

Abstract
BackgroundGastrointestinal cancers are the most common malignant tumors worldwide. As the improvement of survival by surgical resection alone for cancers is close to the bottleneck, recent neoadjuvant therapy has been emphasized and applied in the treatment. Despite the advantage on improving the prognosis, some studies have reported neoadjuvant therapy could reduce skeletal muscle and therefore affect postoperative outcomes. However, the conclusions are still controversial.MethodsPubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to September 2, 2021. The inclusion criteria were observational studies, published in English, of individuals aged ≥18 years who underwent neoadjuvant therapy with gastrointestinal cancers and were assessed skeletal muscle mass before and after neoadjuvant therapy, with sufficient data on skeletal muscle change or the association with clinical outcomes. Meta-analysis was conducted by using the STATA 12.0 package when more than two studies reported the same outcome.ResultsA total of 268 articles were identified, and 19 studies (1,954 patients) were included in the review. The fixed effects model showed that the risk of sarcopenia increased 22% after receiving neoadjuvant therapy (HR=1.22, 95% CI 1.14, 1.31, Z=4.286, P<0.001). In the random effects model, neoadjuvant therapy was associated with skeletal muscle loss, with a standardized mean difference of -0.20 (95% CI -0.31, -0.09, Z=3.49, P<0.001) and a significant heterogeneity (I2 =62.2%, P<0.001). Multiple meta regression indicated that population, neoadjuvant therapy type, and measuring tool were the potential sources of heterogeneity. The funnel plot revealed that there was no high publication bias in these studies (Begg’s test, P=0.544) and the sensitivity analysis showed stable results when separately excluding studies. For the postoperative outcomes, the results revealed that muscle loss during neoadjuvant therapy was significantly related to overall survival (HR=2,08, 95% CI =1.47, 2.95, Z=4.12, P<0.001, I2 = 0.0%), but not related to disease-free survival and other short-term outcomes.ConclusionsThis systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that skeletal muscle decreased significantly during neoadjuvant therapy in patients with gastrointestinal cancers and skeletal muscle loss was strongly associated with worse overall survival. Abstract
Malnutrition has a multifactorial origin and can be caused by cancer. This study determined the consensus of a panel of experts on the nutritional approach for cancer patients in Spain using a multidisciplinary approach. Using the Delphi methodology, a 74-question questionnaire was prepared and sent to 46 experts. The areas of knowledge addressed were the nutritional status of the cancer patient, nutritional screening, nutritional therapy, patient referral, and multidisciplinary care. A total of 91.7% of the experts agreed with the questions posed on nutritional status, 60.0% with those on nutritional screening, 76.7% with those on nutritional therapy, and the entire panel of experts agreed with the questions posed on patient referral and multidisciplinary care. The experts agreed upon a high prevalence of malnutrition among cancer patients in Spain. Unlike medical and radiation oncologists, medical nutrition specialists believe that body composition assessment should not be carried out in all types of cancer patients during nutritional screening and that interventions can be conducted outside the oncology clinic. In general, it is recommended that nursing staff routinely perform nutritional screening before starting cancer treatment. It is necessary to develop a multidisciplinary action protocol that includes nutritional and/or sarcopenia screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The association between nutritional status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not fully understood. This study was conducted to understand the role of nutritional status on HRQoL among people with and without T2DM. SUBJECTS/METHODS Structured survey and direct measurement of anthropometric data were conducted among people with and without T2DM. Nutritional status was measured with Mini Nutritional Assessment tool and HRQoL was measured with a 36-item Short Form Healthy Survey. Data collection was conducted in Chuncheon, South Korea with 756 participants who are older than 40 yrs of age. RESULTS This study found that overall HRQoL were significantly lower in people with T2DM than people without T2DM after controlling for key covariates. When stratified by nutritional status, a greater degree of negative impact of T2DM on overall physical HRQoL was observed among well-nourished or at risk of malnutrition, whereas significant and more evident negative impact of diabetes on overall psychological HRQoL was observed only among malnourished. CONCLUSIONS The study results suggest the role of nutritional status among people with T2DM on overall, especially psychological aspects of HRQoL. Future longitudinal or intervention studies are warranted to test the impact of nutritional status on HRQoL among people with T2DM.

Abstract
Background: To explore the association and understand gender disparities between nutritional status and quality of life among centenarians. Methods: It was a full-sample survey of centenarians conducted in Hainan that included a total of 1,002 eligible centenarians whose age had been verified. The Mini Nutritional Assessment - Short Form (MNA-SF) questionnaire and the EuroQol five dimensions visual analog scale (EQ-5D-VAS) were used to measure participants' nutritional status and quality of life, respectively. Findings: In the 1002 centenarians (822 women and 180 men), 797 (79.5%) (79.5%) reported multimorbidity. The adjusted standardized β estimate association between the MNA-SF and EQ-5D scores was 0.508 in the complete sample. With reference to the normal nutrition group, the standardized β estimate of the association between EQ-5D score and nutritional status were -0.179 and -0.583 for the at risk of malnutrition and malnutrition groups, respectively (both P <0.001). Nutritional status significantly affected the five dimensions of quality of life, particularly mobility and self-care. Compared with the normal nutrition group, the malnutrition group had greater odds of low mobility [Odds ratio (OR)=23.15; 95% CI: 9.81-54.64] and low self-care (OR=24.58; 95% CI: 12.62-47.89). Among males, nutritional status was significantly associated with the usual activities and anxiety/depression dimensions after adjustment. Female participants had results similar to the general population. Interpretation: Malnutrition and being at risk of malnutrition is prevalent among centenarians. Maintaining normal nutritional status is an important protective factor and should receive more attention to improve centenarians' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer chemotherapy usually improves clinical outcomes in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer (APC), but can also cause moderate-to-severe adverse events (AEs). We investigated the relationship between moderate-to-severe AEs and quality of life (QOL) in patients with APC who received outpatient chemotherapy. METHODS We recruited APC patients who received outpatient chemotherapy in Gifu University Hospital between September 2017 and December 2018. Adverse events related to chemotherapy were assessed by a pharmacist collaborating with a physician using common terminology criteria for AEs (CTCAE) ver 4.0, and QOL of patients was self-assessed by patients using the five-level EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L Japanese edition 2). Associations between the EQ-5D-5L utility value and serious AEs were assessed using proportional odds logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 59 patients who received 475 chemotherapy cycles were included. The proportional odds logistic regression indicated that grade ≥ 2 anorexia, pain and peripheral neuropathy were significantly correlated with a decreased EQ-5D-5L utility value. Pharmaceutical intervention for these AEs significantly improved the patients' EQ-5D-5L utility value. CONCLUSIONS Anorexia, pain and peripheral neuropathy were significantly associated with a decrease in QOL. It is assumed that appropriate pharmaceutical intervention with particular emphasis on these AEs can improve the QOL of pancreatic cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy.

The prevalence and the impact of sarcopenia in digestive cancers. A Systematic Review. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2021; 59:328-344. Abstract
Introduction: Sarcopenia is characterized by a decrease in skeletal muscle mass, associated with low muscle strength and/or poor physical performance. Assessing the prevalence of sarcopenia among digestive cancers and establishing the impact that sarcopenia has on the postoperative evolution of digestive tumors may be a central pillar in improving postoperative outcomes by caring for perioperative sarcopenia.This brief review aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in digestive cancer patients.Method and materials: PubMed database was searched for" sarcopenia" AND" digestive cancers" from January 1st, 2010, through September 30th, 2020. PRISMA guideline was used for this systematic review. After the selection process, 31 complete studies were included in our review.Assessment of sarcopenia diagnosis for the studies included in this systematic review was based on a computed tomographic calculation of the skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra.Results: Among a total of 11651 patients with digestive cancers, the prevalence of sarcopenia was 43.68%.The highest prevalence of sarcopenic patients was in esophageal (70.4%) and hepatic (60.3%) cancer, following by biliary tract (49.3%), pancreatic (45.70%), colorectal (42.83%), cancer, and gastric cancer (32.05%) with the lowest prevalence.The results of studies conducted by now regarding the prevalence of sarcopenia in digestive cancers and its relevance in the evolution of these cancers are discordant and uneven.Some studies show that the presence of sarcopenia in patients with digestive cancers is associated with an increased rate of postoperative complications, increased toxicity of chemotherapeutics and increased mortality. Other studies, do not find sarcopenia as an independent risk factor associated with negative consequences in the course of patients with digestive cancers.Conclusions: Sarcopenia is prevalent in digestive cancers. There is still no consensus about the impact of sarcopenia on the treatment of digestive cancers. Further studies are needed to evaluate the real consequences of sarcopenia in digestive cancers.

Abstract
Objective To determine the independent and combined prognostic value of sarcopenia and systemic inflammatory markers in esophageal cancer patients undergoing definitive radiotherapy. Methods Sarcopenia was diagnosed on the basis of the skeletal muscle index (SMI) as determined by the skeletal muscle area at the third lumbar (L3) region and body height. The optimal cutoff value of systemic inflammatory markers was determined by the receiver-operating curve (ROC). Logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation among different variables. Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the factors significantly correlated to overall survival (OS). Based on the results of multivariate survival analysis, a nomogram was established to predict the survival rate. The accuracy of the nomogram was evaluated by the coordination index and the calibration curve. Results A total of 100 esophageal cancer patients were included, of which 77 exhibited sarcopenia. The lymphocyte–monocyte ratio (LMR) was significantly correlated to the risk of sarcopenia (OR = 0.637, 95% CI, 0.452–0.898, P = 0.010). In addition, sarcopenia (P = 0.002, HR = 3.991, 95% CI: 1.653–9.638) and LMR < 2.67 (P < 0.001, HR = 2.665, 95% CI: 1.563–4.543) were independent predictors of OS. Two nomograms with good predictive accuracy were established. Conclusion Sarcopenia and LMR can independently predict the survival of patients with esophageal cancer receiving definitive radiotherapy and have good combined prognostic value.

Abstract
The revised European consensus defined sarcopenia as a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder that is associated with an increased likelihood of adverse outcomes including falls, fractures, physical disability and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and analyse the influence of diet, physical activity (PA) and obesity index as risk factors of each criteria of sarcopenia. A total of 629 European middle-aged and older adults were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometrics were assessed. Self-reported PA and adherence to the Mediterranean diet were evaluated with the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and Prevention with Mediterranean Diet questionnaire (PREDIMED), respectively. The functional assessment included handgrip strength, lower body muscle strength, gait speed and agility/dynamic balance. Of the participants, 4.84% to 7.33% showed probable sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was confirmed in 1.16% to 2.93% of participants. Severe sarcopenia was shown by 0.86% to 1.49% of participants. Male; age group ≤65 years; lower body mass index (BMI); high levels of vigorous PA; and the consumption of more than one portion per day of red meat, hamburgers, sausages or cold cuts and/or preferential consumption of rabbit, chicken or turkey instead of beef, pork, hamburgers or sausages (OR = 0.126-0.454; all p < 0.013) resulted as protective factors, and more time of sedentary time (OR = 1.608-2.368; p = 0.032-0.041) resulted as a risk factor for some criteria of sarcopenia. In conclusion, age, diet, PA, and obesity can affect the risk of having low muscle strength, low muscle mass or low functional performance, factors connected with sarcopenia.

Abstract
This is an integrative literature review with the objective of identifying the relationship between biochemical parameters and the nutritional status of surgical patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, developed in April 2019, encompassing the databases SCOPUS (Elsevier), PubMed Central® (PMC), and the Cochrane Virtual Health Library (BVS). We used the terms "Gastrointestinal Neoplasm" AND "Nutritional Status" AND "Blood Chemical Analysis" with the aid of the Academical software after the protocol validation. Out of 147 articles analyzed, seven were included in the review, as they met the inclusion criteria. There were relevant associations between biochemical parameters and nutritional status. Impaired nutritional status can negatively influence the postoperative outcome. The monitoring of interdisciplinary teams can assist in the recovery of these patients and prevent unfavorable outcomes.

Abstract
Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is lower in individuals with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) than in the general population. However, previous evaluations of HRQOL for AIH have included a broad range of disease activities. The aim of this study was to clarify HRQOL among patients with AIH in remission.We assessed HRQOL in patients with AIH in remission, patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) with eradicated hepatitis C virus (HCV) and patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) using the Japanese version of the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ).Participants comprised 62 patients with AIH in remission, 39 patients with CHC with eradicated HCV and 66 patients with PBC. Median ages of patients were 63, 69, and 64 years, respectively. Overall score (5.6 vs 5.9, P = .02) and fatigue (5.2 vs 5.6, P = .01) and worry (5.6 vs 6.0, P = .01) domain scores of the CLDQ were significantly lower in patients with AIH in remission than in CHC with eradicated HCV, and similar to scores except for the systemic symptoms domain in patients with PBC. Disease duration was associated with lower scores on systemic symptoms and activity domains of the CLDQ in patients with AIH in remission.Patients with AIH in remission show impaired HRQOL associated with disease duration.

Abstract
We evaluated the impact of body composition on clinical outcomes after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by surgery for elderly cStage II/III esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Ninety-one patients ≥70 years old and 116 patients <70 years old with ECSS who underwent NAC between January 2013 and June 2018 at the Aichi Cancer Center were included. Body composition as assessed from computed tomography (CT), American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA-PS), and subjective global assessment (SGA) was assessed before initiation of NAC. Although elderly patients showed significantly poorer ASA-PS (p < 0.01) and SGA (p < 0.01), and significantly more frequent history of malignancy (p < 0.05), no significant differences were identified in the frequencies of adverse events, postoperative complications, or in cancer-specific survival (p = 0.65, hazard ratio 1.15), or overall survival (p = 0.42, hazard ratio 1.26). However, multivariate analysis identified sarcopenic obesity as the only independent predictor of prognosis in elderly patients. Sarcopenic obesity was associated with higher body mass index (p = 0.04), better SGA (p < 0.01), and lower pre-treatment weight loss (p = 0.03). NAC was as effective and safe for elderly patients without sarcopenic obesity as for young patients. However, diagnosing sarcopenic obesity based on clinical findings is difficult, so the preoperative CT assessment of sarcopenic obesity is important.

Abstract
Purpose Sarcopenia, defined as a loss of muscle mass and quality, has been associated with impaired oncological outcome and treatment toxicities in several malignancies. However, its role in anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) remains less well explored. Methods/Materials Planning CT scans were used to measure cross-sectional skeletal muscle area (SMA) to calculate the skeletal muscle index (SMI). The association of sarcopenia with clinical and treatment-related parameters, and toxicity was assessed in 114 patients with ASCC that underwent standard 5-Fluorouracil/Mitomycin C chemoradiotherapy (CRT). The prognostic impact of sarcopenia on local relapse-free survival (LRFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival was examined using a Cox regression analysis. Results 29 (25.4%) patients had sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia had lower baseline hemoglobin levels (p = 0.002), worse Karnofsky Performance Status (p = 0.001) lower BMI (p < 0.001), and a significantly lower body surface area (p = 0.03), and lower incidence of involved lymph nodes (p = 0.03). Regarding acute toxicity, sarcopenia was associated with a significantly higher incidence of ≥grade 3leukopenia (OR: 3.5; 95% CI: 1.6-7.5, p = 0.007) and ≥grade 3 thrombopenia (OR: 5.1; 95% CI: 1.3-21, p = 0.018) after CRT. Despite higher hematologic toxicity in sarcopenic patients, total treatment time was similar between patients with and without sarcopenia (median 44 vs 45 days, p = 0.95). There was no significant prognostic impact of sarcopenia on either LRFS, DFS, or OS. Conclusion This is the largest study to assess the impact of sarcopenia on toxicity and oncological outcome in patients with ASCC. Increased clinician awareness of higher hematological toxicity risk is needed for sarcopenic patients with ASCC undergoing CRT to facilitate closer monitoring of side effects and earlier introduction of supportive measures. Further prospective studies are needed to elucidate the prognostic role and impact of sarcopenia on CRT-related toxicity in ASCC.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an important prognostic factor in patients with gastrointestinal and chronic liver diseases. Computed tomography and bioelectrical impedance analysis are the gold standards for measuring skeletal muscle mass for the diagnosis of decreased muscle mass, but there are some institutions where BIA and CT cannot be carried out. We evaluated the utility of simplified methods for measuring muscle mass; the psoas muscle mass index (PMI) method, simple PMI method, and arm muscle area (AMA) method. This retrospective study included 331 patients with gastrointestinal diseases and 81 patients with chronic liver diseases who were admitted from June 2018 to December 2019 at Municipal Hospital of Kofu. The skeletal muscle mass was measured using the PMI via the volume analyzer SYNAPSE VINCENT ver3.0, simple PMI based on CT imaging, and AMA method. Positive correlations were found between muscle mass measured by PMI and simple PMI, PMI and AMA, and simple PMI and AMA in patients with gastrointestinal diseases (correlation coefficients = 0.76, 0.57, 0.47, respectively, p < 0.001). Positive correlations were observed between muscle mass measured by PMI and simple PMI, PMI and AMA, and simple PMI and AMA in chronic liver diseases (correlation coefficients = 0.77, 0.53, 0.45, respectively, p < 0.001). Measurement of muscle mass by the AMA method showed some correlation with the PMI method. Measurement of muscle mass by the simple PMI method showed correlation with the PMI method. These simplified methods can be alternative methods of evaluating muscle mass in patients with gastrointestinal and chronic liver disease.

Abstract
Background Outpatient cancer chemotherapy may lead to improved quality of life (QOL) by allowing treatment to continue without impairing the social lives of patients compared with hospitalization. However, the occurrence of serious adverse events may cause a decline in QOL. We investigated the relationship between outpatient chemotherapy–induced adverse events and QOL. Methods A single-center retrospective descriptive study was conducted in patients who received outpatient chemotherapy at Gifu University Hospital (Gifu, Japan) between September 2017 and December 2018. The utility values of QOL, type and severity of adverse events, type of cancer, chemotherapy regimen, and other patient demographics were analyzed. Adverse events were graded according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 4.0. QOL was evaluated using the Japanese version of the EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level (EQ-5D-5L). Associations between the EQ-5D-5L utility value and serious adverse events were assessed using adjusted (age and sex) odds ratios obtained with a proportional odds logistic regression model. Results Data from 1008 patients who received 4695 chemotherapy cycles were analyzed. According to proportional odds logistic regression, the adverse events that significantly correlated with a decreased EQ-5D-5L utility value were malaise, edema of the limbs, peripheral neuropathy, pruritus, and dry skin. Based on the proportional odds logistic analysis, neither cancer type nor anticancer drugs were significantly correlated with the EQ-5D-5L utility value in patients who received chemotherapy. Pharmaceutical care for peripheral neuropathy significantly improved patients’ EQ-5D-5L utility value from 0.747 to 0.776 (P < 0.01). Conclusions Adverse events (i.e., peripheral neuropathy, malaise, and edema of the limbs) are significantly correlated with a decrease in QOL, regardless of the type of cancer or anticancer drugs used. Pharmaceutical care provided by pharmacists in collaboration with physicians may improve QOL. Abstract
Postoperative malnutrition is a major issue among gastrointestinal cancer patients. Because n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have immunological benefits, n-3 PUFAs are widely used in oral nutritional supplements (ONS). However, n-3 PUFAs in ONS reduced patients' compliance with ONS and affected the role of ONS in maintaining the postoperative nutritional status of patients. The aim of this study was to systematically explore the benefits of enteral nutrition rich in n-3 PUFAs in maintaining the nutritional status of patients after gastrointestinal surgery. Databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and VIP databases were searched through March 16, 2019. The references of related reviews and studies were assessed up to March 16, 2019. The effect sizes from individual studies were calculated as the standardized mean difference (SMD), mean difference (MD), and risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). A total of 11 studies (n = 977) were included. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we observed that enteral supplementation of n-3 PUFAs had no significant effect on weight (MD, 1.09; 95% CI, -0.90, 3.08), body mass index (MD, 0.55; 95% CI, -1.45, 2.54), albumin (SMD, 0.39; 95% CI, -0.10, 0.87), wound infections (RR, 0.87, 95% CI, 0.57, 1.33), or pneumonia (RR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.60, 1.59) in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Thus, compared with enteral nutritional without n-3 PUFAs, enteral nutritional rich in n-3 PUFAs has no significant effects on nutritional status, incidence of pneumonia, or wound infections among gastrointestinal cancer patients during postoperative convalescence.
