Abstract
OBJECTIVES Conventional nodular gastritis has been known to be caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Several cases of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with non-H. pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) exhibit endoscopic findings resembling nodular gastritis. Considering the differences in malignancy, distinguishing between these two conditions is crucial. This study aimed to identify the distinguishing endoscopic features of NHPH-induced gastric MALT lymphoma with nodular gastritis-like appearance (NHPHi-MNG) and H.-induced conventional nodular gastritis (HPi-NG). METHODS Between 2011 and 2022, we analyzed 17 patients with NHPHi-MNG and 50 patients with HPi-NG at Hiroshima University Hospital and evaluated nodule morphology and distribution patterns. RESULTS Compared with the HPi-NG group, the NHPHi-MNG group exhibited significantly larger nodules (2.5 vs. 2.0 mm, P < 0.05) with protruded morphology (protruded/superficial, elevated: 14/3 vs. 8/42, P < 0.05), most prominently in the gastric angulus. The variability in nodule size was significantly higher in the NHPHi-MNG group than in the HPi-NG group (0.85 vs. 0.37 mm, P < 0.05), reflecting nodule heterogeneity. The distance from the gastric angulus to the proximal end of the nodular lesions was significantly greater in the NHPHi-MNG group than in the HPi-NG group (4.4 vs. 1.7 cm, P < 0.05). The nodules in the HPi-NG group were smaller, superficial, elevated, and most prominent in the gastric antrum compared with those in the NHPHi-MNG group. They were predominantly distributed in the gastric antrum with a homogeneous morphology. CONCLUSION NHPHi-MNG and HPi-NG can be endoscopically differentiated according to nodule morphology and distribution. Recognizing these distinguishing features is essential for an accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
Helicobacter species (spp.) is a gram-negative spiral-shaped motile bacterium that causes gastritis in pigs and also colonizes in the human stomach. The present study assessed the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in pig gastric mucosa and the stool of pig farmers in Assam, India. A total of 403 stomach samples from pig slaughter points, 74 necropsy samples of pigs from pig farms, and 97 stool samples from pig farmers were collected. Among the pig stomach samples, 43 (20.09%) of those with gastritis showed the presence of Gram-negative, spiral-shaped organisms, while only 3.04% of stomach samples without lesions had these organisms. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of urease-positive stomach samples revealed tightly coiled Helicobacter bacteria in the mucus lining. Histopathological examination showed chronic gastritis with hemorrhagic necrosis, leucocytic infiltration, and lymphoid aggregates. PCR confirmed the presence of Helicobacter suis in 19.63% of pig stomach samples and 2.08% of pig farmer stool samples. Additionally, 3.12% of the stool samples from pig farmers were positive for Helicobacter pylori. Phylogenetic analysis revealed distinct clusters of Helicobacter suis with other Helicobacter spp. These findings highlight the prevalence of Helicobacter in both pig gastric mucosa and pig farmer stool. The findings highlight the need for improved sanitation and hygiene practices among pig farmers to minimize the risk of Helicobacter infection in humans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical, endoscopic, histologic, and treatment outcomes of Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii) associated gastritis in children in the New England region of the United States. METHODS Retrospective study of children (1-18 years) with H. heilmannii identified on gastric mucosal biopsies from two pediatric centers over a 21-year period, January 2000-December 2021. Cases were identified by querying pathology databases at each institution. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the medical record. Endoscopic and histologic findings were extracted from endoscopy and pathology reports, respectively. RESULTS Thirty-eight children were diagnosed with H. heilmannii-associated gastritis during the study period. The mean age at diagnosis was 10.1 ± 5.3 years, and 25/38 (66%) cases were male. Abdominal pain (32%) and nausea with or without vomiting (26%) were the most common symptoms. Thirty-two children (84%) had endoscopic findings including gastric nodularity (55%) and erythema (26%). All children had histologic signs of chronic gastritis, including those with normal endoscopic exams. Antibiotic regimens used for treating Helicobacter pylori were frequently prescribed. Of the 17 children who underwent a follow-up endoscopy (range 2-68 months), 15 (88%) did not have H. heilmannii identified on gastric biopsies. CONCLUSION H. heilmannii was an infrequent but potential cause of epigastric abdominal pain and nausea in our cohort of New England children. While morphologically distinct from H. pylori, the bacteria can result in similar endoscopic and histologic findings of nodularity and chronic gastritis, respectively. The rate of eradication, as assessed by histology following treatment with H. pylori therapies, was below the 90% recommended goal for antimicrobial therapies.

Abstract
Marginal zone lymphomas rank as the third most prevalent form of non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma, trailing behind diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (GML) is a low-grade B-cell neoplasia frequently correlated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-induced chronic gastritis. On the other hand, a specific subset of individuals diagnosed with GML does not exhibit H. pylori infection. In contrast to its H. pylori-positive counterpart, it was previously believed that H. pylori-negative GML was less likely to respond to antimicrobial therapy. Despite this, surprisingly, in-creasing evidence supports that a considerable proportion of patients with H. pylori-negative GML show complete histopathological remission after bacterial eradication therapy. Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms underlying this treatment responsiveness are not yet fully comprehended. In recent years, there has been growing interest in investigating the role of non-H. pylori gastric helicobacters (NHPHs) in the pathogenesis of H. pylori-negative GML. However, additional research is required to establish the causal relationship between NHPHs and GML. In this minireview, we examined the current understanding and proposed prospects on the involvement of NHPHs in H. pylori-negative GML, as well as their potential response to bacterial eradication therapy.

Abstract
This article focuses on the pathogenic significance of Helicobacter species naturally colonizing the stomach of dogs, cats and pigs. These gastric "non-Helicobacter (H.) pylori Helicobacter species" (NHPH) are less well-known than the human adapted H. pylori. Helicobacter suis has been associated with gastritis and decreased daily weight gain in pigs. Several studies also attribute a role to this pathogen in the development of hyperkeratosis and ulceration of the non-glandular stratified squamous epithelium of the pars oesophagea of the porcine stomach. The stomach of dogs and cats can be colonized by several Helicobacter species but their pathogenic significance for these animals is probably low. Helicobacter suis as well as several canine and feline gastric Helicobacter species may also infect humans, resulting in gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulcers, and low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. These agents may be transmitted to humans most likely through direct or indirect contact with dogs, cats and pigs. Additional possible transmission routes include consumption of water and, for H. suis, also consumption of contaminated pork. It has been described that standard H. pylori eradication therapy is usually also effective to eradicate the NHPH in human patients, although acquired antimicrobial resistance may occasionally occur and porcine H. suis strains are intrinsically less susceptible to aminopenicillins than non-human primate H. suis strains and other gastric Helicobacter species. Virulence factors of H. suis and the canine and feline gastric Helicobacter species include urease activity, motility, chemotaxis, adhesins and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. These NHPH, however, lack orthologs of cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island and vacuolating cytotoxin A, which are major virulence factors in H. pylori. It can be concluded that besides H. pylori, gastric Helicobacter species associated with dogs, cats and pigs are also clinically relevant in humans. Although recent research has provided better insights regarding pathogenic mechanisms and treatment strategies, a lot remains to be investigated, including true prevalence rates, exact modes of transmission and molecular pathways underlying disease development and progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii) infection in patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases is not yet fully understood. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, endoscopic, histopathological, and therapeutic features of H. heilmannii. METHODS To retrieve the relevant studies, we conducted a comprehensive systematic search of global databases such as the ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. After confirming the studies based on the inclusion criteria statistical analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. RESULTS In our study, the prevalence of infection with H. heilmannii was measured at 1.9% (95% CI: 0.8-4.2). The prevalence of H. heilmannii in Asian population was higher than Western countries (3.1% vs. 1.2%, respectively). Interestingly, the frequency of coinfection with both H. pylori and H. heilmannii was 15.4% (95% CI: 5.2-37.6). The most common endoscopic findings were chronic gastritis, hyperplasia, and erosion. In addition, our results showed that in people infected with this bacterium, gastric inflammation is typically chronic, focal, and less active than Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis. Conventional treatment of H. pylori can lead to the eradication of H. heilmannii. CONCLUSION In general, H. heilmannii infection is significantly associated with mild chronic gastritis and can be treated with standard anti-H. pylori treatment.

Abstract
Genetic analysis and culturing techniques for gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) are progressing. NHPH is reported to accompany nodular gastritis, gastric MALT lymphoma, and mild gastritis. However, only a few gastric cancer cases infected by NHPH have been reported. PCR analysis specific for NHPH and H. pylori was performed for DNA from gastric mucosa of 282 Korean gastric cancer patients, who were treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection. For more precise strain detection of NHPH, NHPH-positive mucosa was stained by immunohistochemistry specific for Helicobacter suis. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) classification was analyzed for these 3 gastric cancer sub-groups by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Among 281 patients, 3 patients (1.1%) were positive for NHPH. One patient (Patient 1) was also positive for H. pylori by PCR, another patient (Patient 3) was positive for serum IgG for H. pylori, and the other patient (Patient 2) had no evidence for H. pylori infection. Gastric mucosa of Patients 2 and 3 were positive for H. suis staining. All three NHPH-positive gastric cancers were located in the antrum, and belonged to the Chromosomal Instability Type of TCGA classification. Gastric NHPH can be a cause of gastric cancer, although likely with lower pathogenesis than H. pylori.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eradication therapy is known to be effective against Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric MALT lymphoma but predicting the efficacy of eradication therapy against Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma is difficult. Recent reports have shown that non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections induce gastric MALT lymphoma, and we aimed to clarify whether non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections are associated with the efficacy of eradication therapy. METHODS We analyzed eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for 182 cases of gastric MALT lymphoma, classified according to Helicobacter pylori infection and API2-MALT1 mutation status. We also evaluated the non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection status in 29 Helicobacter pylori-negative cases via PCR with DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded biopsy tissues. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection status and eradication therapy outcome. RESULTS The API2-MALT1 mutation was observed in 13/182 patients (7.1%), none of whom were cured by eradication therapy. Helicobacter pylori-negative cases had a significantly higher non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection rate than Helicobacter pylori-positive cases (16/29, 55% vs. 3/29, 10%; P < 0.05). Among the Helicobacter pylori-negative cases, non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-positive cases had a significantly higher complete response rate than non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-negative cases (12/16, 75% vs. 3/13, 23%; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Helicobacter pylori-negative and API2-MALT1-negative gastric MALT lymphoma cases exhibited a high rate of non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections, which may have contributed to the success of eradication therapy. Therefore, we recommend eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-positive gastric MALT lymphoma.

Abstract
Human infection by Non-Helicobacter pylori-Helicobacter is rare and most commonly transmitted through direct contact with animals. The clinical presentation in most cases is chronic epigastric abdominal pain and it usually leads to chronic gastritis. We present an uncommon case of a patient with acute onset abdominal pain secondary to acute peptic ulcer disease caused by Helicobacter heilmannii who underwent successful treatment. We also conducted a review of the literature to understand the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, and the best diagnostic and treatment modalities for Non-H. pylori-Helicobacter infections.

Abstract
Most patients with gastric mucosa‐associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma are infected with Helicobacter pylori, and eradication therapy is the first‐line treatment for localized disease with H pylori infection. However, there were several reports showing effectiveness of eradication therapy in even H pylori negative cases. Gastric MALT lymphomas are endoscopically classified into three common types: superficial, ulcerative, and elevated types. For the past 20 years, we have encountered 200 cases of localized gastric MALT lymphoma. Among them, only 4 cases (2%) showed similar macroscopic findings to those of nodular gastritis (gastric MALT lymphoma with nodular gastritis‐like appearance; M‐NGA). Here, we compared clinicopathological characteristics and prevalence of non‐H pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) infection between M‐NGA and other common types of gastric MALT lymphoma. To examine the prevalence of NHPH infection, DNA was extracted from formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded biopsy tissues from four cases of M‐NGA, 20 cases of common endoscopic types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and 10 cases of nodular gastritis. We used a highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction assay to detect the presence of five species of NHPH (Helicobacter suis, H felis, H bizzozeronii, H salomonis, and H heilmannii). H suis infection was detected in 4, 2, and 0 of the 4, 20, and 10 cases of M‐NGA, other types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and nodular gastritis, respectively. Other NHPH species were not detected in any cases. Complete response rate by eradication therapy was 4/4 in M‐NGA cases. Therefore, nodular gastritis‐like MALT lymphoma, which shows a very rare phenotype, is closely associated with NHPH infection, and eradication therapy may be the first‐choice treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression of HER-2 in gastric cells of cats infected with Non H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) and to investigate an association with the presence of inflammatory infiltrate. Forty-eight paraffin-embedded gastric samples were retrieved from the archives of the Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Laboratory that had previously been shown to be positive for NHPH with the rapid urease test and cytology. Infection by NHPH was confirmed by histopathology using the Warthin-Starry staining. Hematoxylin-eosin stained sections were reviewed to evaluate inflammatory cell infiltrates. Immunohistochemical analysis was done using anti- H. pylori antibody and anti-HER-2 antibody. Molecular analysis was performed by PCR to confirm the presence of Helicobacter. Statistical analysis was performed to determine whether there was an association between the presence of H. Heilmannii and HER-2 expression in gastric samples. All samples were positive for NHPH, by immunohistochemistry, and confirmed by PCR as H. Heilmannii. On histopathologic analysis, 56,3% of the samples had lymphocytes and plasma cells infiltrates, 52,1% of which were mild and 4,2% moderate. The intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate in the gastric mucosa was significantly greater in the complete plasma membrane of parietal cells of gastric glands that had greater HER-2 immunoexpression (p = 0.0001). A statistically significant association (p = 0.007) between the H. Heilmannii infection score and the expression of HER-2 in the lateral membrane of gastric surface cells was observed. HER-2 expression may be increased in feline gastric cells infected by H. Heilmannii and in parietal cells of gastric glands with an increased inflammatory infiltrate.

Abstract
Ulceration of the non-glandular part of the stomach is a common disease entity of pigs worldwide, with prevalences of up to 93%. It may result in decreased daily weight gain, decreased feed intake and sudden death, thus leading to significant economic losses, as well as animal welfare issues. The aetiology is multifactorial. Diet particle size, management and infectious agents have been hypothesised to be involved. The exact mechanism behind porcine gastric ulceration is, however, not completely clear. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the role of infectious agents in the development of porcine gastric ulceration. Results of recent studies indicate that Helicobacter suis infection plays an important role in gastric ulceration, probably by affecting gastric acid secretion through alteration of the number and/or function of parietal, D and G cells. In a gastric environment altered by H. suis, higher numbers of Fusobacterium gastrosuis are present and this novel pathogen has a potential role in the development of porcine gastric ulceration. Inoculation of pigs with Lactobacillus sp., Bacillus sp. or Helicobacter pylori-like bacteria in combination with a carbohydrate-rich diet may induce gastric lesions. It has been hypothesised that production of short chain fatty acids by some of these bacteria might be involved in the pathogenesis of porcine gastric ulceration, but the lack of taxonomic characterisation hampers the interpretation of these studies. Severe infectious diseases have also been associated with gastric lesions, probably due to interruption in feed intake and/or histamine release. Other agents, including fungi and parasites such as Hyostrongylus rubidus and Ascaris suum, have occasionally been associated with gastric lesions in pigs.

Abstract
The minimum inhibitory concentration of bambermycin on three porcine Helicobacter suis strains was shown to be 8 μg/mL. The effect of in-feed medication with this antibiotic on the course of a gastric infection with one of these strains, the host response and the gastric microbiota was determined in mice, as all of these parameters may be involved in gastric pathology. In H. suis infected mice which were not treated with bambermycin, an increased number of infiltrating B-cells, T-cells and macrophages in combination with a Th2 response was demonstrated, as well as a decreased parietal cell mass. Compared to this non-treated, infected group, in H. suis infected mice medicated with bambermycin, gastric H. suis colonization was not altered, but a decreased number of infiltrating T-cells, B-cells and macrophages as well as downregulated expressions of IL-1β, IL-8M, IL-10 and IFN-γ were demonstrated and the parietal cell mass was not affected. In bambermycin treated mice that were not infected with H. suis, the number of infiltrating T-cells and expression of IL-1β were lower than in non-infected mice that did not receive bambermycin. Gastric microbiota analysis indicated that the relative abundance of bacteria that might exert unfavorable effects on the host was decreased during bambermycin supplementation. In conclusion, bambermycin did not affect H. suis colonization, but decreased gastric inflammation and inhibited the effects of a H. suis infection on parietal cell loss. Not only direct interaction of H. suis with parietal cells, but also inflammation may play a role in death of these gastric acid producing cells.

Abstract
Gastric mRNA expression of markers for acid secretion and inflammation and presence of gastric ulceration was studied in naturally Helicobacter suis-infected and non-infected 2–3 months old, 6–8 months old and adult pigs. In H. suis-infected 2–3 months old pigs, IL-8 and IL-1β transcript levels were upregulated in the pyloric gland zone, indicating an innate immune response. A similar response was demonstrated in the fundic gland zone of adult pigs, potentially due to a shift of H. suis colonization from the pyloric to the fundic gland zone. A Treg response in combination with decreased expressions of IL-8, IL-17A and IFN-γ was indicated to be present in the H. suis-infected 6–8 months old pigs, which may have contributed to persistence of H. suis. In H. suis-infected adult pigs, a Treg response accompanied by a Th17 response was indicated, which may have played a role in the decreased number of H. suis bacteria in the stomach of this age group. The decreased G-cell mass and upregulated expression of somatostatin indicated decreased acid secretion in H. suis-infected 6–8 months old pigs. In H. suis-infected adult pigs, upregulation of most markers for gastric acid secretion and increased G-cell mass was detected. Presence of severe hyperkeratosis and erosions in the non-glandular part of the stomach were mainly seen in the H. suis-positive groups. These results show that H. suis infection affects the expression of markers for acid secretion and inflammation and indicate that these effects differ depending on the infection phase.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter (H.) suis is mainly associated with pigs, but is also the most prevalent gastric non-H. pylori Helicobacter species found in humans. Both H. pylori and H. suis may cause persistent infection of the stomach. Several immune evasion mechanisms have been proposed for H. pylori, which focus to a great extent on its major virulence factors, which are absent in H. suis. The aim of this study was to gain more knowledge on immune evasion by H. suis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cytokine expression kinetics were monitored in the stomach of BALB/c mice experimentally infected with H. suis. The cytokine expression profile in the stomach of naturally H. suis-infected pigs was also determined. Subsequently, the effect of H. suis on murine and porcine dendritic cell (DC) maturation and their ability to elicit T-cell effector responses was analyzed. RESULTS Despite a Th17/Th2 response in the murine stomach, the inflammatory cell influx was unable to clear H. suis infection. H. suis-stimulated murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells induced IL-17 secretion by CD4+ cells in vitro. Natural H. suis infection in pigs evoked increased expression levels of IL-17 mRNA in the antrum and IL-10 mRNA in the fundus. In contrast to mice, H. suis-stimulated porcine monocyte-derived dendritic cells were unable to express MHCII molecules on their cell surface. These semimature DCs induced proliferation of T-cells, which showed an increased expression of TGF-β and FoxP3 mRNA levels. CONCLUSIONS Helicobacter suis might evade host immune responses by skewing toward a Treg-biased response.

Abstract
The stomach of pigs at slaughter age is often colonized by Helicobacter (H.) suis, which is also the most prevalent gastric non-H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species in humans. It is associated with chronic gastritis, gastric ulceration and other gastric pathological changes in both hosts. Parietal cells are highly specialized, terminally differentiated epithelial cells responsible for gastric acid secretion and regulation. Dysfunction of these cells is closely associated with gastric pathology and disease. Here we describe a method for isolation and culture of viable and responsive parietal cells from slaughterhouse pigs. In addition, we investigated the interactions between H. suis and gastric parietal cells both in H. suis-infected six-month-old slaughter pigs, as well as in our in vitro parietal cell model. A close interaction of H. suis and parietal cells was observed in the fundic region of stomachs from H. suis positive pigs. The bacterium was shown to be able to directly interfere with cultured porcine parietal cells, causing a significant impairment of cell viability. Transcriptional levels of Atp4a, essential for gastric acid secretion, showed a trend towards an up-regulation in H. suis positive pigs compared to H. suis-negative pigs. In addition, sonic hedgehog, an important factor involved in gastric epithelial differentiation, gastric mucosal repair, and stomach homeostasis, was also significantly up-regulated in H. suis positive pigs. In conclusion, this study describes a successful approach for the isolation and culture of porcine gastric parietal cells. The results indicate that H. suis affects the viability and function of this cell type.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Of all human cancers, gastric carcinoma is the one of the leading causes of death. Helicobacter pylori is considered a major etiologic agent of this disease. Spontaneously occurring gastric carcinoma is a rare diagnosis in nonhuman primates. A 2011 case report documented a high incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma in a closed colony of captive sooty mangabeys (Cercebus atys). However, H. pylori infection was not detected in these animals. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, using archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded stomach sections of these animals alternative methodologies were used to identify H. pylori and other non-H. pylori Helicobacter species. In addition, two additional cases of sooty mangabeys with metastatic gastric carcinoma are characterized. RESULTS Using fluorescent in situ hybridization, we identified gastric H. suis in 75% of archived and new gastric carcinoma cases. In the two newly reported cases, H. suis and a novel Helicobacter species were detected via PCR and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. H. pylori was not identified in any of the gastric carcinoma cases via FISH and/or PCR and sequence analysis of Helicobacter spp. in DNA from of available tissues. CONCLUSIONS This report is the first to characterize Helicobacter species infection in spontaneous gastric carcinoma with metastatic potential in nonhuman primates.

Abstract
Helicobacter (H.) suis can colonize the stomach of pigs as well as humans, causing chronic gastritis and other gastric pathological changes including gastric ulceration and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Recently, a virulence factor of H. suis, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), has been demonstrated to play an important role in the induction of human gastric epithelial cell death and modulation of lymphocyte proliferation depending on glutamine and glutathione catabolism. In the present study, the relevance of GGT in the pathogenesis of H. suis infection was studied in mouse and Mongolian gerbil models. In addition, the relative importance of H. suis GGT was compared with that of the H. pylori GGT. A significant and different contribution of the GGT of H. suis and H. pylori was seen in terms of bacterial colonization, inflammation and the evoked immune response. In contrast to H. pyloriΔggt strains, H. suisΔggt strains were capable of colonizing the stomach at levels comparable to WT strains, although they induced significantly less overall gastric inflammation in mice. This was characterized by lower numbers of T and B cells, and a lower level of epithelial cell proliferation. In general, compared to WT strain infection, ggt mutant strains of H. suis triggered lower levels of Th1 and Th17 signature cytokine expression. A pronounced upregulation of B-lymphocyte chemoattractant CXCL13 was observed, both in animals infected with WT and ggt mutant strains of H. suis. Interestingly, H. suis GGT was shown to affect the glutamine metabolism of gastric epithelium through downregulation of the glutamine transporter ASCT2.

Abstract
Helicobacter (H.) suis is capable of infecting various animals including humans, and H. suis infections can lead to gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Recently, we reported that interferon-γ (IFN-γ) was highly expressed in the stomachs of H. suis-infected mice, but the direct relationship between the upregulation of IFN-γ expression and the formation of gastric lymphoid follicles after H. suis infection remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the IFN-γ produced by B cells plays an important role in the formation of gastric lymphoid follicles after H. suis infection. In addition, IFN-γ-producing B cells evoked gastric lymphoid follicle formation independent of T-cell help, suggesting that they are crucial for the development of gastric MALT induced by Helicobacter infection.

Abstract
Helicobacter heilmannii sensu lato (H. heilmannii s.l.) is a group of gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species that are morphologically indistinguishable from each other. H. heilmannii s.l. infect the stomach of several animals and may have zoonotic potential. Although the prevalence of these infections in humans is low, they are associated with gastric pathology, including mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, making them a significant health issue. Here, the taxonomy, epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment of these infections will be reviewed. The gastric pathology associated with H. heilmannii s.l. infections in humans will also be addressed. Finally, the features of the complete bacterial genomes available and studies on species-specific pathogenesis will be reviewed. The understanding of the mechanisms that underlie gastric disease development mediated by the different bacterial species that constitute H. heilmannii s.l. is essential for developing strategies for prevention and treatment of these infections.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an extremely common, yet underappreciated, pathogen that is able to alter host physiology and subvert the host immune response, allowing it to persist for the life of the host. H. pylori is the primary cause of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer. In the United States, the annual cost associated with peptic ulcer disease is estimated to be $6 billion and gastric cancer kills over 700000 people per year globally. The prevalence of H. pylori infection remains high (> 50%) in much of the world, although the infection rates are dropping in some developed nations. The drop in H. pylori prevalence could be a double-edged sword, reducing the incidence of gastric diseases while increasing the risk of allergies and esophageal diseases. The list of diseases potentially caused by H. pylori continues to grow; however, mechanistic explanations of how H. pylori could contribute to extragastric diseases lag far behind clinical studies. A number of host factors and H. pylori virulence factors act in concert to determine which individuals are at the highest risk of disease. These include bacterial cytotoxins and polymorphisms in host genes responsible for directing the immune response. This review discusses the latest advances in H. pylori pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Up-to-date information on correlations between H. pylori and extragastric diseases is also provided.

Abstract
AIM: To compare the endoscopic and histopathological characteristics of Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii)- versusHelicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastritis in Chinese patients.
METHODS: Gastric biopsy specimens from 53559 consecutive patients treated at Peking University Third Hospital from January 2003 to January 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. All cases of chronic gastritis were evaluated based on the Updated Sydney System. Endoscopic and histopathological characteristics of cases with H. heilmannii infection were compared with those with H. pylori infection.
RESULTS: There were 46 cases with H. heilmannii infection (0.1%) and 18326 cases with H. pylori infection (34.2%). Compared to H. pylori-associated gastritis, H. heilmannii-associated gastritis showed a lower bacterial density (P < 0.001), less severe mononuclear cell infiltration (P < 0.001) and neutrophil activity (P < 0.001), and endoscopic findings of H. heilmannii-associated gastritis were devoid of ulcer (P = 0.021). H. heilmannii density showed a significant correlation with neutrophil activity (P = 0.02), but not with chronic inflammation (P = 0.159). The percentages of patients with mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and intraepthelial neoplasia in the H. heilmannii-associated gastritis group were 23.9%, 21.7% and 4.3%, respectively, and there was no significant difference in the prevalence and degree of these precancerous lesions between the two groups. A case of signet-ring cell carcinoma concomitant with H. heilmannii infection was detected.
CONCLUSION: H. heilmannii-associated gastritis is uncommon and milder than H. pylori-associated gastritis. The observation that there were no significant differences between two groups in the prevalence and degree of mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and intraepthelial neoplasia suggests that H. heilmannii may be partly responsible for malignant-associated lesions just as H. pylori does. In addition, one case of signet-ring cell carcinoma concomitant with H. heilmannii infection was noted.

Abstract
Neonatal Fc receptors for immunoglobulin (Ig)G (FcRn) assume a central role in regulating host IgG levels and IgG transport across polarized epithelial barriers. We have attempted to elucidate the contribution of FcRn in controlling Helicobacter infection in the stomach. C57BL/6J wild-type or FcRn(-/-) mice were infected with Helicobacter heilmannii, and gastric lesions, bacterial load and the levels of antigen-specific IgG in serum and gastric juice were analyzed. The elevated levels of anti-H. heimannii IgG in gastric juice were observed exclusively in wild-type mice but not in FcRn(-/-) mice. In contrast, an increase in lymphoid follicles and bacterial loads along with deeper gastric epithelium invasion were noted in FcRn(-/-) mice. C57BL/6J wild-type or FcRn(-/-) mice were also infected with Helicobacter pylori SS1, and the results of the bacterial load in stomachs of these mice and the anti-H. pylori IgG levels in serum and gastric juice were similar to those from H. heilmannii infection. Our data suggest that FcRn can be functionally expressed in the stomach, which is involved in transcytosis of IgG, and prevent colonization by H. heilmannii and the associated pathological consequences of infection.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to assess the role of helper T cells in the development of gastric lymphoid follicles induced by Helicobacter suis infection. C57BL/6J mice were orally inoculated with H. suis. Six weeks after infection, gastric lymphoid follicles were observed in the gastric mucosa by hematoxylin and eosin staining, and the number of follicles was increased throughout the infection period. An immunohistological examination showed that the lymphoid follicles were composed of B cells, CD4-positive helper T cells, and dendritic cells (DC). It was also revealed that the mRNA expression level of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in the gastric mucosa was significantly increased at 12 weeks after infection. No gastric lymphoid follicles were detected in IFN-γ-deficient mice that had been infected with H. suis at 12 weeks after infection, although the development of lymphoid follicles in IL-4-deficient mice infected with H. suis was similar to that seen in the wild-type mice. In conclusion, IFN-γ, a Th1 cytokine, is deeply involved in the pathogenesis of gastric lymphoid follicles induced by H. suis infection, and it is suggested that CD4-positive T cells and DC aid in the expansion of gastric lymphoid follicles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori is the primary cause of gastritis and peptic ulceration in humans. In a minority of patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, long tightly coiled spiral bacteria, provisionally named "Helicobacter heilmannii," are observed in gastric biopsies. These bacteria are extremely fastidious and only one previous study has succeeded in obtaining an isolate in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used two different selective media to isolate "H. heilmannii" from the gastric mucosa of a Finnish patient presenting with severe dyspeptic symptoms. The isolates were characterized by testing for urease and catalase activity, by using light and electron microscopy, and by sequencing of the partial 16S rRNA and ureAB genes. Single-enzyme amplified fragment length polymorphism (sAFLP) was used to analyze the genetic diversity among the isolates. RESULTS We obtained 15 isolates from different gastric biopsies prior and three after unsuccessful treatment of the patient. The isolates were identified as Helicobacter bizzozeronii. Eradication therapy was unsuccessful most probably due to high level of resistance to metronidazole. Persistent colonization by the same H. bizzozeronii clone was confirmed by sAFLP, however, small differences between the profiles suggested long-term colonization of the patient. CONCLUSIONS Helicobacter bizzozeronii remains the only "H. heilmannii" species isolated from human gastric mucosa although it has been an infrequent observation among "H. heilmannii"-infected patients in PCR-based screening studies. The relevance of H. bizzozeronii and other potentially zoonotic gastric Helicobacter spp. in human disease remains to be determined.

Abstract
In most H. pylori-positive patients, gastric low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas regress both endoscopically and histopathologically after H. pylori eradication, but no factors that can be predictive of the response to the eradication have been definitively identified, and there is little information on how to determine the optimal observation period before additional treatment can be started. Here, clinical studies dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of gastric MALT lymphomas and H. pylori published during the last 5 years were systematically reviewed, and studies identifying the molecular approaches involved in the pathogenesis were summarized. Most of the clinical studies indicate a favorable effect of H. pylori eradication on the clinical outcome of gastric MALT lymphomas. Some studies suggest the necessity of additional treatment in nonresponders to H. pylori eradication, while others suggest the adoption of a watch-and-wait strategy. The molecular characteristics of MALT lymphomas could play an important role in prognostic prediction and the selection of further therapeutic intervention after the eradication. This updated review of gastric MALT lymphomas illustrates the potential efficacy of H. pylori eradication in tumor remission, but further molecular characterization is necessary to establish the most suitable therapeutic strategy for patients who do not respond to eradication.
