Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effects of different energy and protein levels on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, and taste scores of Pekin ducks. A total of 1,800 numbers of 15-day-old ducks (10 replicate pens, 60 birds/pen, 819 ± 18 g/duck) were blocked based on body weight (BW) and randomly allotted to three treatments with different metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) levels in this 28-day experiment. Dietary treatments were as follows: (1) low energy protein (LEP), 3,150 kcal/kg and 16% for the grower diet and 3,250 kcal/kg and 15% for the finisher diet; (2) medium energy protein (MEP), 3,250 kcal/kg and 16.5% for the grower diet and 3,350 kcal/kg and 15.5% for the finisher diet; (3) high energy protein (HEP), 3,350 kcal/kg and 17% for the grower diet and 3,450 kcal/kg and 16% for the finisher diet. During days 15-28, body weight gain (BWG) in the LEP group was higher (p < 0.05), whereas FI, F/G, and caloric conversion were lower (p < 0.05) in the MEP and HEP groups. During days 29-42, birds fed with LEP and HEP diets had lower (p < 0.05) BWG but higher F/G and caloric conversion compared with those fed with the MEP diet. Birds fed with the LEP diet had higher (p < 0.05) BWG than those fed with MEP and HEP diets throughout the experiment. The abdominal fat yield in the LEP group was lower (p < 0.05) than in the HEP group. Birds fed with the LEP diet had higher (p < 0.05) left breast meat yields than those fed with MEP and HEP diets. The roasting loss in the LEP and HEP groups was lower (p < 0.05) than in the MEP group. Birds fed with LEP and HEP diets had higher (p < 0.05) comprehensive scores, flavor scores, scent scores, and taste scores, but lower color scores compared with those fed with the MEP diet. In summary, the LEP diet with the lowest cost may be the most appropriate based on growth performance, roasting loss, and taste scores.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) and lysine levels on growth performance, slaughter performance, meat quality, and myofiber characteristics of slow-growing chicken. A 3 × 3 factorial experiment was arranged, and the chickens were fed with 3 levels of dietary CP (16.0%, 17.0%, 18.0%) and 3 levels of dietary lysine (0.69%, 0.84%, 0.99%). A total of 540 8-week-old Beijing-You Chicken (BYC) female growing chickens were randomly allocated to 9 groups, 5 replicates per group, and 12 chickens per replicate. The birds were randomly allocated to one of the 9 experimental diets. Growth performance, slaughter performance, meat quality, and myofiber characteristics were determined at 16 weeks of age. The results showed that dietary CP level and the interaction of dietary CP and lysine levels affected average feed intake (AFI) (p < 0.05). The AFI in the 16.0% CP and 17.0% CP groups was higher than in the 18.0% CP group (p < 0.05). Dietary CP levels significantly affected body weight gain (BWG) (p < 0.05) at 9 to 16 weeks. The 18.0% CP group had the highest BWG (93.99 g). Dietary CP levels affected the percentage of leg muscle yield, and the percentage of leg muscle yield of the 16.0% CP group was significantly lower than that in the other two groups (p < 0.05). Dietary CP and lysine levels alone and their interactions did not affect pH24h, drip loss, and cooking loss of breast muscle (p > 0.05). The shear force of the 18.0% CP group (29.55 N) was higher than that in the other two groups (p < 0.01). Dietary CP level affected myofiber characteristic (p < 0.01), with the lowest myofiber density (846.35 p·mm-2) and the largest myofiber diameter (30.92 μm) at 18.0% CP level. Dietary lysine level affected myofiber diameter, endomysium thickness, perimysium thickness (p < 0.01), with the largest myofiber diameter (29.29 μm) obtained at 0.84% lysine level, the largest endomysium thickness (4.58 μm) at 0.69% lysine level, and the largest perimysium thickness (9.26 μm) at 0.99% lysine level. Myofiber density was negatively correlated with myofiber diameter and endomysium thickness (R = -0.883, R = -0.523, p < 0.01); perimysium thickness had a significant negative correlation with shear force (R = -0.682, p < 0.05). Therefore, reducing dietary CP level and adding appropriate lysine can reduce myofiber diameter and increase perimysium thickness, reducing shear force and improving meat tenderness. A high lysine level (0.99%) in the low-CP (16.0%) diet can improve meat tenderness by regulating the myofiber characteristic without affecting production performance.

Abstract
This experiment aimed to discuss and reveal the effect and mechanism of mannanase on intestinal inflammation in broilers triggered by a soybean meal diet. In this experiment, 384 Arbor Acres broilers at 1 d old were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups. The broilers were fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet, a low-energy diet (metabolizable energy reduced by 50 kcal/kg), and a low-energy diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg mannanase for 42 d. The low-energy diet increased feed conversion ratio from 0 to 42 d, reduced ileal villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio and upregulated the expression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in the ileum (P < 0.05). It also reduced cecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), such as acetic acid (P < 0.05). Compared with low-energy diets, the addition of mannanase increased body weight at 42 d, promoted the digestibility of nutrients, and maintained the morphology and integrity of the intestinal epithelium of broilers (P < 0.05). In addition, mannanase upregulated the expression of claudin-1 (CLDN1) and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) in the jejunum at 21 d, downregulated the expression of ileal NF-κB, and increased the content of isobutyric acid in the cecum of broilers (P < 0.05). The results for the ileal microbiota showed that a low-energy diet led to a decrease in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri in the ileum of broilers. The addition of mannanase increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus-KC45b and Lactobacillus johnsonii in broilers. Furthermore, a low-energy diet reduced the relative abundance of Butyricicoccus in the intestine of broilers and inhibited oxidative phosphorylation and phosphoinositol metabolism. Mannanase increased the relative abundance of Odoribacter, promoted energy metabolism and N-glycan biosynthesis, and increased the activities of GH3 and GH18. It is concluded that mannanase could improve the growth performance of broilers by reducing the expression of NF-κB in the ileum, increasing the production of SCFA in the cecum, suppressing intestinal inflammation, balancing the intestinal microbiota, reducing damage to the intestinal barrier, and improving the efficiency of nutrient utilization to alleviate the adverse effects caused by the decrease in dietary energy level.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the production efficiency (economics), growth, and meat quality of ducks fed with feed partially replaced with wheat. A total of 200 ducks were reared for 49 days. Each group consisted of 50 ducks (5 pens with 10 birds). For slaughter, 10 birds per group were chosen. The control group (C) was provided with a complete feed. In the experimental groups, from 42 to 49 days, the feed was replaced with wheat grains at the level of 10% (W10), 20% (W20), or 40% (W40). In the W20 and W40 groups, the cost of feed was reduced. In the W40 group, the profit per 1 kg carcass was increased by PLN 3.34 (more than 24% higher than the C group profit). A higher percentage of pectoral muscles and intramuscular fat was observed in the W20 group, with lower water content. A lower water-holding capacity (WHC) was observed in the duck leg muscles in group W40. The muscles from the W20 group had higher protein, collagen, and water content, and the fat was highest in the W40 group. A lower toughness of cooked meat was observed in the W20 group, and lower shear force in the pectoral muscles of groups C and W40. Thinning feed with wheat grains could represent an alternative to conventional feeding of broiler ducks, owing to reduced feed costs, with no negative impact on utility features, including growth, except the share of pectoral muscle and water absorption traits.

Abstract
Abstract
Nutrition is the most important environmental factor affecting development, health status, growth performance and profitability of poultry production. Feeds for poultry constitute up to 70–75% of total production costs. Poultry nutrition differs considerably from that of other livestock, which is determined by the specific anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract. Protein, energy, fat, fiber, minerals, vitamins, and water are of basic importance for poultry nutrition and their content in feeds must cover the requirement that differ depending on the bird’s age and species. In general, feed protein must be of good value including the content of essential amino acids. Among them lysine, methionine, cysteine, threonine and tryptophan are the limiting ones. The main ingredient of poultry feeds are cereal grains, i.e. wheat and maize, which predominantly constitute an energy source because their protein content is insufficient for birds. Because of that cereals cannot be the only feed for poultry and must be combined with protein sources such as soybean or rapeseed meal, legume seeds or protein concentrates. Despite birds’ requirement for nutrients and chemical composition of feeds are well known, nutrition must face many problems. One of the most important issues is to find alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters.

Abstract
A dose-response experiment was conducted to estimate optimal dietary apparent metabolisable energy requirement (AME) in Sansui ducks (Sansui Sheldrake duck) from hatch to 21 days of age. Three hundred thirty-six one-day-old male Sansui ducks were randomly assigned to six experimental treatments, each consisting of seven replicate pens with eight birds per pen. Birds were fed diets containing either 10.92, 11.38, 11.8, 12.26, 12.68 and 13.14 MJ AME/kg, respectively. At 21 d of age, the body weight, weight gain, feed intake, protein intake, energy intake and feed conversion ratio of ducklings from each pen were measured. Increasing AME content from 10.92 MJ/kg to 13.14 MJ/kg significantly improved body weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and crude protein intake (P<0.05). No significant changes in energy intake were found among treatments (P>0.05). Based on broken-line regression analysis, the AME requirement of male Sansui ducks from hatch to 21 d of age was 11.49 and 11.59 MJ/kg for maximum body weight and best feed conversion ratio, respectively.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to determine the maximum dietary energy levels on
growth performance and carcass characteristics of White Pekin duck. the Six
dietary treatments were formulated based on their apparent metabolizable energy
(AME) concentrations from 2,700 to 3,200 kcal/kg with a 100 kcal/kg gap to
evaluate the accurate dietary AME requirement to address current knowledge and
further issues for fulfilling the genetic potential of meat-type white Pekin
ducklings. A total of 432 one-day-old male White Pekin ducklings were randomly
allocated into one of six dietary treatments with six replicates (12 birds per
pen). The diets were formulated as corn-soybean meal-based diets to meet or
exceed the Nutrient Requirement of Poultry specification for meat-type ducks.
Growth performance indices (i.e. average daily gain [ADG], average daily feed
intake, feed conversion ratio) were measured weekly. Medium body weight (BW)
ducklings from each pen were sacrificed to analyze the carcass traits and
abdominal fat content on day 21. Obtained data were analyzed to estimate
significant effect using the one-way ANOVA of IBM SPSS Statistics (Version, 25).
If the p-value of the results were significant, differences in
means among treatments were separated by Tukey’s post hoc test.
Significant differences were then analyzed with a linear and quadratic broken
model to estimate the accurate concentration of AME. Ducklings fed higher
dietary AME diets increased (p < 0.05) BW, ADG.
Ducklings fed higher AME than 2,900 kcal/kg diets increased abdominal fat
accumulation and leg meat portion. The estimated requirement by linear plateau
method showed from 3,000.00 kcal/kg to 3,173.03 kcal/kg whereas the requirement
by quadratic plateau method indicated from 3,100.00 kcal/kg to 3,306.26 kcal/kg.
Collectively, estimated dietary requirements exhibit diverse results based on
the measured traits and analysis methods. All the estimated requirements in this
experiment present higher than previous research, the maximum requirement for
the next diet formulation should be selected by the purpose of the diet.

Abstract
By some accounts, ducks were domesticated between 400 and 10,000 yr ago and have been a growing portion of the poultry industry for decades. Ducks specifically, and waterfowl in general, have unique health, housing, nutrition and welfare concerns compared to their galliform counterparts. Although there have been many research publications in regards to health, nutrition, behavior, and welfare of ducks there have been very few reviews to provide an overview of these numerous studies, and only one text has attempted to review all aspects of the duck industry, from breeders to meat ducks. This review covers incubation, hatching, housing, welfare, nutrition, and euthanasia and highlights the needs for additional research at all levels of duck production. The purpose of this review is to provide guidelines to raise and house ducks for research as specifically related to industry practices.

Abstract
Simple Summary Tremendous improvements have been made in the duck commercial industry, especially in aspects such as the increase of body weight and shortening of the production cycle. Meat duck production has been increasing annually worldwide. Improvements in precise nutrition were crucial for ducks to improve growth efficiency and reduce diet costs. Currently, L-Met, a new methionine (Met) source, has been commercially available for duck diet formulation. The bioavailability of L-Met is greater than DL-Met for growth performance in duck. The present study estimated the Met requirement of starter Pekin ducks from 1 to 21 days of age by supplementing crystal L-Met to formulate the diets at different ME levels. The results suggested that the Met requirement of starter Pekin ducks was affected by dietary ME levels. The data potentially provide theoretical support for the utilization of crystalline L-Met in duck production. Abstract A 2 × 6 factorial experiment was conducted to determine the influences of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) and methionine (Met) levels on growth performance, carcass traits, and plasma biochemical parameters of starter Pekin ducks from 1 to 21 days of age. A total of 600 one-day-old male Pekin ducklings were randomly assigned to 12 groups (six replicates each group and eight ducks per replicate) in a 2 × 6 two-factor arrangement. The basal Met levels of two basal diets (11.54 and 12.52 MJ/kg ME) were 0.31 and 0.29%, respectively. The crystalline L-Met was supplemented to yield six diets according to different supplemental levels (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25%). The results showed that the body weight (BW) and average daily weight gain (ADG) were increased (p < 0.05) with increasing dietary Met levels. Dietary ME levels changed from 11.54 to 12.52 MJ/kg increased the BW and ADG (p < 0.05) as well as decreased the average daily feed intake and feed to gain ratio (p < 0.05). As the dietary Met level increased, leg muscle yield increased (p < 0.05). Conversely, increasing the dietary ME level decreased the leg muscle yield (p = 0.0024) and increased abdominal fat (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the concentrations of total cholesterol (TCHO), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) in plasma were decreased (p < 0.05) when the ME levels of diets changed from 11.54 to 12.52 MJ/kg. Meanwhile, the plasma TCHO and HDLC concentrations decreased (p < 0.05) as dietary Met levels increased. Based on the linear-broken line model, the dietary Met requirement of starter Pekin ducks from 1 to 21 days of age for optimal ADG were 0.362% (0.052% supplemental L-Met) at 11.54 MJ ME/kg and 0.468% (0.178% supplemental L-Met) at 12.52 MJ ME/kg, respectively, when crystal L-Met was supplemented to formulate the diets. This suggested that the Met requirement of starter Pekin ducks was affected by dietary ME levels. The data potentially provide theoretical support for the utilization of crystalline L-Met in duck production.

Abstract
A 2 × 5 factorial experiment, using 2 dietary metabolizable energy (ME) levels (10.82, 12.95 MJ/kg) and 5 supplemental methionine (Met) levels (0, 0.075, 0.15, 0.225, and 0.30%), was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary energy and Met levels on growth performance and carcass traits of Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 D of age. A total of 300 15-day-old male Pekin ducks were randomly allocated to 10 groups with 6 replicates in each group and 5 ducks per replicate. The results showed that ducks those fed the basal diets without Met supplementation had poor growth performance. The ADG was increased (P < 0.001), and the ADFI and feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased (P < 0.001) when Met were supplemented in diets. The ADFI and FCR were decreased (P < 0.001), while ADG was not affected (P > 0.05) when dietary ME level increased from 10.82 to 12.95 MJ/kg. Dietary Met supplementation increased the yields of eviscerated carcass (P = 0.007) and breast meat (P < 0.001), and decreased abdominal fat (P < 0.001), but increasing dietary energy level resulted in an adverse effect on carcass traits. We observed an interaction effect on FCR between dietary energy and supplemental Met level (P = 0.033). According to the broken-line models, Met requirements of growing Pekin ducks for optimal FCR at 10.82 and 12.95 MJ/kg of ME were 0.406 and 0.502% when expressed as percentage of diet, or 0.376 and 0.388 when expressed as g/MJ ME of diet, respectively. According to the t-test, Met requirements were different (P < 0.05) when expressed as percentage of diet, but had no difference (P > 0.05) when expressed as g/MJ ME of diet in both dietary ME levels. It indicated that Met requirement was affected by dietary ME level, but the Met/ME ratio was relatively constant in diet of Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 D of age.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the influence of dietary lipid sources on growth performance, carcass traits and taste scores in Pekin ducks. A total of 1,500 fifteen-day-old ducks (820 ± 22 g) were blocked based on body weight (BW), and randomly allotted to 3 treatments with 10 replicates of 50 birds each (25 males and 25 females). The experiment lasted for 4 wk, and dietary treatments included 3 different lipid sources (soybean oil, duck fat, and palm oil), which were evaluated in corn-soybean meal diets (3250 kcal/kg metabolizable energy and 16.5% crude protein for grower diet and 3350 kcal/kg metabolizable energy and 15.5% crude protein for finisher diet). During days 15 to 28, feeding soybean oil and palm oil diets increased (P < 0.05) body weight gain (BWG), but decreased (P < 0.05) feed intake, feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) and caloric conversion compared with duck fat. During days 29 to 42, birds fed duck fat diet had higher BWG, but lower (P < 0.05) F/G and caloric conversion than those fed soybean oil and palm oil diets. Overall, feeding soybean oil diet increased (P < 0.05) BWG and final BW, but decreased (P < 0.05) F/G compared with palm oil. Birds fed duck fat diet had higher (P < 0.05) skin, subcutaneous fat and abdominal fat yield compared with palm oil. Left breast meat yield in soybean oil group was higher (P < 0.05) than that in duck fat and palm oil groups. Birds in soybean oil group had lower (P < 0.05) roasting loss, but higher (P < 0.05) comprehensive score compared with duck fat and palm oil. In summary, birds fed soybean oil diet had the best growth performance and taste scores for roasting, whereas the duck fat was better in abdominal fat and subcutaneous fat yield than soybean oil and palm oil in Pekin ducks from 15 to 42 d of age under the same nutritional level.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the impact of dietary energy and protein concentrations and lipid sources on growth performance and carcass traits of Pekin ducks. In Exp. 1, 15-day-old ducks (6 replicate pens, 60 ducks/pen) were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments with different metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) concentrations (2,850 kcal/kg and 16%, 2,950 kcal/kg and 16.5%, 3,050 kcal/kg and 17.0%, and 3,150 kcal/kg and 17.5%) based on body weight (BW). In Exp. 2, 20-day-old ducks (4 replicate pens, 60 ducks/pen) were randomly allotted to 3 dietary fat sources (soybean oil, lard, and palm oil) with or without emulsifier in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. In Exp. 1, increasing ME and CP level improved (P < 0.05) body weight gain (BWG) and cost-to-gain ratio linearly, but reduced (P < 0.05) feed intake (FI) and feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) linearly. Breast skin thickness and liver redness (a*) value increased (P < 0.05) linearly with the increasing ME and CP level. In Exp. 2, no interactions between fat sources and emulsifier were observed. Feeding lard and palm oil diets increased (P < 0.05) final BW and BWG compared to soybean oil. Birds fed soybean oil and palm oil diets had lower (P < 0.05) FI compared to those fed lard diet. F/G in soybean oil and lard groups was higher (P < 0.05) compared to palm oil group. Birds in palm oil and lard groups had higher (P < 0.05) European production efficiency factor than those in soybean oil group. The addition of emulsifier increased (P < 0.05) BWG. In summary, the optimal ME and CP level for roasting was 2,950 kcal/kg ME and 16.5% CP and the palm oil was better than soybean oil and lard in Pekin ducks from 15 to 40 D of age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both selenium (Se) and probiotic Bacillus regulate the metabolism to help defense clod stress and improve the meat quality in breeding chicks. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplemental Se and Bacillus in the form of Se-enriched Bacillus (SECB) on the growth performance, lipid parameters, breast Se and antibiotic levels, and breast meat quality of chicken in winter cold stress. METHODS Five hundred 1-d-old chickens were divided into five groups randomly: Control, inorganic Se, compound Bacillus, SECB, and antibiotic. The feed duration was 56 d. RESULTS After 28 d of treatment, chicks feed SECB or compound Bacillus had higher body weights than the control, and after 56 d, chicks given either SECB or compound Bacillus had higher body weights than the control chicks or those given inorganic Se. Adding SECB to feed significantly increased the lightness, redness, and yellowness of breast meat, improved the water-holding capacity, and reduced the shear force and cooking loss. The concentration of Se in the breast muscle very significantly increased after SECB and inorganic Se supplementation, which was opposite to the concentration of flavomycin in antibiotic supplemented chicks. The antioxidative status of plasma and breast meat was significantly improved with added compound Bacillus and SECB: the total antioxidant capacity, total superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase ability in the breast muscle significantly improved, and the malondialdehyde concentration in plasma decreased. The levels of total cholesterol plasma triglyceride and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the plasma and breast muscle was decreased compared to that of the control, while the plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration increased. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, SECB supplementation promoted the body growth, antioxidative status, and Se concentrations in the plasma and breast meat, and also improved the breast meat quality.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy concentration on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines in the liver of meat ducks challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A total of 600 1-d-old Cherry Valley meat ducks were randomly assigned to 10 treatments with six replicate cages of 10 birds/pen. A 5 × 2 factorial arrangement in a complete randomized design experiment was used to study the effect of five concentrations of dietary metabolizable energy (ME, 2,800, 2,900, 3,000, 3,100, and 3,200 kcal/kg) with or without a challenge with LPS in meat ducks. All experimental ducks were intraperitoneally injected with either 0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW) LPS or an equivalent amount of sterile saline at 15, 17, and 19 d of age. The results showed that LPS challenge significantly decreased (P < 0.05) BW (d 21), body weight gain (d 15-21) and average daily feed intake (ADFI; d 15-21), and markedly increased (P < 0.05) relative spleen weight, serum total protein concentration, and the mRNA expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10, transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), and Avian Beta Defensin 10 (AVBD-10) in the liver of meat ducks. Ducks fed 3,200 kcal/kg ME diet had the lowest (P < 0.05) ADFI than those fed with the other diets. Additionally, there were significantly LPS by diet interactions on IL-6, interferon-γ, TGF-β, AVBD-10, and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression (P < 0.05), wherein a more pronounced liver inflammatory response was observed in birds fed high-energy diets (3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME) than birds fed low-energy diet (2,800 and 2,900 kcal/kg ME). The results indicated that 3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME of diets increased hepatic inflammatory markers induced by LPS challenge in ducks but did not influence performance responsiveness during this challenge.

Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary high or recommended nicotinic acid (niacin) supplementation on growth performance, total tract nutrient digestibility, hematology, serum chemistry, and lipoprotein concentrations in the serum and meat of growing turkeys. Turkeys were assigned to three treatments on weight equalisation basis with five replicates of eight turkeys in each group. Experimental diets were: no supplemental niacin (Control), a diet supplemented with 60 mg/kg niacin termed as recommended niacin supplementation and a diet supplemented with 180 mg/kg niacin termed as high niacin supplementation (HNS). The experiment lasted for the grower (Day 56–84) and finisher phases (Day 84–112) of the birds. Dietary inclusion of HNS increased (P < 0.01) bodyweight gain, metabolisable energy (Days 84 and 112), dressing percentage and retail cut parts of turkeys (Day 112) in relation to the Control-fed turkeys. Furthermore, least white blood cell count and higher concentrations of packed cell volume, red blood cells and hemoglobin (P < 0.01) were found in turkeys fed HNS on Days 84 and 112. Similarly, turkeys in the HNS group had improved serum constituents including serum protein, uric acid, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphate. The blood and meat lipid profile analysis showed that low density lipoprotein and total cholesterol were least (P < 0.05) in turkeys fed HNS. Collectively, dietary high supplementation of niacin (180 mg/kg) improves production performances, reduces serum and meat fat content and improve indicators of stress resistance ability in growing turkeys.

Abstract
Background Coccidiosis is a prevalent problem in chicken production. Dietary addition of coccidiostats and vaccination are two approaches used to suppress coccidia in the practical production. Methionine (Met) is usually the first limiting amino acid that plays important roles in protein metabolism and immune functions in chickens. The present study is aimed to investigate whether increasing dietary Met levels will improve the anticoccidial effects in broilers medicated or vaccinated against coccidia under Eimeria (E.) tenella-challenged condition. Two thousand male Partridge Shank broiler chicks were obtained from a hatchery. After hatch, birds were weighed, color-marked and allocated equally into two anticoccidial treatments, namely medicated and vaccinated groups. Chicks were either fed, from 1 d of age, diets containing coccidiostat (narasin) or diets without the coccidiostat but were inoculated with an anticoccidial vaccine at 3 d of age. At 22 d of age, 1080 chicks among them were randomly allocated evenly into 6 groups under a 2 × 3 treatment with 2 anticoccidial programs and 3 dietary methionine (Met) levels. Chicks medicated or vaccinated against coccidia were fed diets containing 0.45%, 0.56% or 0.68% of Met from 22 to 42 d of age. All chicks were orally introduced with an amount of 5 × 104 sporulated oocysts of E. tenella at 24 d of age. The growth performance, serum anti-oxidative indexes, intestinal morphology, cecal lesion scores, fecal oocyst counts and immune parameters were measured. Results The results showed increasing dietary Met level from 0.45% to 0.56% and 0.68% improved weight gain and feed conversion of broilers medicated against coccidia. In contrast, higher dietary levels of Met did not improve growth performance of the vaccinated chickens. Higher Met levels helped the medicated chickens resist E. tenella infection, as indicated by improved intestinal morphology and immune functions as well as decreased cecal lesion and fecal oocyst counts. Conclusions Anticoccidial vaccination is a better strategy for controlling coccidiosis than feeding narasin, due to not only greater growth performance, but also the lower Met supplementation. Furthermore, higher dietary Met levels improved growth performance of chickens medicated rather than vaccinated against coccidia under E. tenella-challenged condition.
