Abstract
Disease-resistant hybrid grape cultivars (DRHGCs) are hybrids of Vitis vinifera and other Vitis species that provide greater resistance to specific diseases, including downy and powdery mildew. These have many advantages, but often have unusual chemical and sensory properties. This study examined the link between the chemical and sensory properties of DRHGC red wines from South Tyrol, Northern Italy, using 'modified rate-all-that-apply' sensory analysis, projective mapping ('napping'), and analytical chemistry. The V. vinifera wine was more astringent, with more strawberry and jam aromas, than the DRHGC wines; the DRHGC wines had stronger green bell pepper flavours and aromas. The polyphenol and volatile profiles of DRHGCs were also distinctive, as were the profile of macrocyclic (crown) oligomeric proanthocyanidins. Panellists rated the DRHGC wines as high quality, suggesting that V. vinifera wines are not inevitably preferred.

Abstract
Rhododendron decorum, a widely distributed Rhododendron species in southwestern China, is recognized not only for its significant ornamental value but also as a culinary resource for local tribes. However, the defense mechanisms underlying the ecological adaptations of R. decorum remain to be elucidated. In this study, we conducted comparative transcriptomic analyses of various organs (corolla, androecium/gynoecium and leaves) of R. decorum collected from two distinct two regions. Approximately 186.98 Gb of clean data were generated from three organs of R. decorum across these regions. Through de novo assembly, a total of 92,025 unigenes were obtained and nearly half of them (43,515 unigenes) were successfully annotated. Enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) within three comparative groups of different organs (HQI/LFI, HQO/LFO and HQL/LFL, respectively) revealed that the distribution of R. decorum in the Heqing region exhibited an increased requirement for plant immunity, including resistance to diseases, insects, and herbivores across various plant organs. Conversely, R. decorum in the Lijiang region showed a greater reliance on environmental factors, such as cold tolerance, aromatic compounds production, and the attraction of pollinating insects. Notably, the validation of 21 pivotal genes identified from significantly regulated enrichment pathways across different organs showed functional consistency in the KEGG enrichment analysis among different organs in these two regions. The functional disparities observed in the transcriptome of R. decorum across distinct regions provide valuable insight into the understanding of its adaptive defense mechanism.

Abstract
Microcapsules are widely utilized in various applications to preserve active ingredients for prolonged durations while enabling controlled release. However, limited release of active ingredients often hampers their effectiveness in daily-use products. In this study, we demonstrated the synthesis of silica core–shell microcapsules designed for controlled fragrance release in topical formulations. The microcapsules were synthesized via the sol–gel polymerization of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) on the surface of an oil/water emulsion, leveraging the shrinkage and deformation characteristics of sol–gel-derived silica during drying. The concentrations of dipalmitoylethyl dimethylammonium chloride, a cationic emulsifier used in cosmetics, and TEOS were optimized to sustain fragrance release for up to 24 h after topical application. An additional silica coating on the microcapsules reduced the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area by 76.54%, enhancing fragrance stability for long-term storage. The timed-release behavior was assessed using fragrance evaluation tests and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The fragrance intensity and release profiles confirmed the potential of these microcapsules in daily-use cosmetics. These findings suggest that silica microcapsules with extended-release properties have application potential in both cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

Abstract
Active components from plants are an alternative therapy to parasite control, addressing the widespread multidrug resistance populations. Linalyl acetate (LA), an ester abundantly found in plants of the genus Lavandula, was tested in vitro against third-stage larvae (L3) of Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. using the larval migration test at 0.89, 2.24, 4.47, 8.95, 17.9, 35.8, 71.6, and 143.2 mg/ml. After an initial incubation of 18 h, the total content of each tube was transferred to a 24-well plate that allowed active L3 to migrate through a nylon mesh (second incubation). Although LA exhibited 100% efficacy in reducing larval migration at 8.95 and 17.9 mg/ml, it showed reduced activity (5%) at 143.2 mg/ml. The data revealed a hormetic biphasic response characterised by an inverted U-shaped concentration-response curve. While hormesis has been previously documented in insecticidal and allelopathic contexts, this study reports the occurrence of hormesis induced by a phytochemical component against two species of nematodes for the first time. This distinctive stimulation-and-inhibition effect should be considered when selecting new compounds for preclinical testing.

Abstract
Personal care products (PCPs) contain diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and routine use of PCPs indoors has important implications for indoor air quality and human chemical exposures. This chamber study deployed aerosol instrumentation and two online mass spectrometers to quantify VOC emissions from the indoor use of five fragranced PCPs and examined the formation of gas-phase oxidation products and particles upon ozone-initiated oxidation of reactive VOCs. The tested PCPs include a perfume, a roll-on deodorant, a body spray, a hair spray, and a hand lotion. Indoor use of these PCPs emitted over 200 VOCs and resulted in indoor VOC mixing ratios of several parts per million. The VOC emission factors for the PCPs varied from 2 to 964 mg g-1. We identified strong emissions of terpenes and their derivatives, which are likely used as fragrant additives in the PCPs. When using the PCPs in the presence of indoor ozone, these reactive VOCs underwent oxidation reactions to form a variety of gas-phase oxidized vapors and led to rapid new particle formation (NPF) events with particle growth rates up to ten times higher than outdoor atmospheric NPF events. The resulting ultrafine particle concentrations reach ∼34000 to ∼200000 cm-3 during the NPF events.

Abstract
This study delves into the chemical and genetic determinants of petal color and fragrance in Rosa canina L., a wild rose species prized for its pharmacological and cosmetic uses. Comparative analysis of white and dark pink R. canina flowers revealed that the former harbors significantly higher levels of total phenolics (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC), while the latter is distinguished by elevated total anthocyanins (TAC). Essential oils in the petals were predominantly composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons, with phenolic content chiefly constituted by flavonols and anthocyanins. Notably, gene expression analysis showed an upregulation in most genes associated with petal color and scent biosynthesis in white buds compared to dark pink open flowers. However, anthocyanin synthase (ANS) and its regulatory gene RhMYB1 exhibited comparable expression levels across both flower hues. LC-MS profiling identified Rutin, kaempferol, quercetin, and their derivatives as key flavonoid constituents, alongside cyanidin and delphinidin as the primary anthocyanin compounds. The findings suggest a potential feedback inhibition of anthocyanin biosynthesis in white flowers. These insights pave the way for the targeted enhancement of R. canina floral traits through metabolic and genetic engineering strategies.

Abstract
Flavors and fragrances are an important class of specialty chemicals for which interest in biomanufacturing has risen during recent years. These naturally occurring compounds are often amenable to biosynthesis using purified enzyme catalysts or metabolically engineered microbial cells in fermentation processes. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the categories of molecules that have received the greatest interest, both academically and industrially, by examining scholarly publications as well as patent literature. Overall, we seek to highlight innovations in the key reaction steps and microbial hosts used in flavor and fragrance manufacturing.

Abstract
The acyclic linear monoterpenes Linalool (Lin) and Linalyl acetate (LinAc) occur in nature as major constituents of various essential oils such as lavender oils. A potential endocrine activity of these compounds was discussed in literature including premature thelarche and prepubertal gynecomastia due to lavender product use. This study aims to follow-up on these critical findings reported by testing Lin and LinAc in several studies in line with current guidance and regulatory framework. No relevant anti-/ER and AR-mediated activity was observed in recombinant yeast cell-based screening tests and guideline reporter gene in vitro assays in mammalian cells. Findings in the screening test suggested an anti-androgenic activity, which could not be confirmed in the respective mammalian cell guideline assay. Mechanistic guideline in vivo studies (Uterotrophic and Hershberger assays) with Lin did not show significant dose related changes in estrogen or androgen sensitive organ weights and a guideline reproductive toxicity screening study did not reveal evident effects on sex steroid hormone sensitive organ weights, associated histopathological findings and altered sperm parameters. Estrous cycling and mating/fertility indices were not affected and no evident Lin-related steroid hormone dependent effects were found in the offspring. Overall, the initial concerns from literature were not confirmed. Findings in the yeast screening test were aberrant from follow-up guideline in vitro and in vivo studies, which underlines the need to apply careful interpretation of single in vitro test results to support a respective line of evidence and to establish a biologically plausible link to an adverse outcome.

Abstract
Organic volatiles produced by fruits can result in overestimation of sweetness by humans, but it is unknown if a comparable phenomenon occurs in other species. Honey bees collect nectar of varying sweetness at different flowering plants. Bees discriminate sugar concentration and generally prefer higher concentrations; they encounter floral volatiles as they collect nectar, suggesting that they, like humans, could be susceptible to sweetness enhancement by odorant. In this study, limonene, linalool, geraniol, and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol were tested for their ability to alter behaviors related to perception of sweetness by honey bees. Honey bees were tested in the laboratory using proboscis extension response-based assays and in the field using feeder-based assays. In the laboratory assays, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol and geraniol, but neither linalool nor limonene, significantly increased responses to low concentrations of sucrose compared with no odorant conditions in 15-day and 25-day-old adult worker honey bees, but not in 35-day-old bees. Limonene reduced responding in 15-day-old bees, but not in the older bees. There was no odorant-based difference in performance in field assays comparing geraniol and limonene with a no odorant control. The interaction of the tested plant volatiles with sucrose concentration revealed in laboratory testing is therefore unlikely to be a major determinant of nectar choice by honey bees foraging under natural conditions. Because geraniol is a component of honey bee Nasonov gland pheromone as well as a floral volatile, its impact on responses in the laboratory may reflect conveyance of different information than the other odorants tested.

Abstract
Linalool and its derivatives contribute greatly to tea aroma. Here, 8-hydroxylinalool was found to be one of the major linalool-derived aroma compounds in Camellia sinensis var. assamica 'Hainan dayezhong', a tea plant grown in Hainan Province, China. Both (Z)-8-hydroxylinalool and (E)-8-hydroxylinalool were detected, and the E type was the main compound. Its content fluctuated in different months and was the highest in the buds compared with other tissues. CsCYP76B1 and CsCYP76T1, located in the endoplasmic reticulum, were identified to catalyze the formation of 8-hydroxylinalool from linalool in the tea plant. During withering of black tea manufacturing, the content of both (Z)-8-hydroxylinalool and (E)-8-hydroxylinalool significantly increased. Further study suggested that jasmonate induced gene expression of CsCYP76B1 and CsCYP76T1, and the accumulated precursor linalool may also contribute to 8-hydroxylinalool accumulation. Thus, this study not only reveals 8-hydroxylinalool biosynthesis in tea plants but also sheds light on aroma formation in black tea.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The ability of natural plants to treat chronic diseases is closely related to their antioxidant function. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation is an effective way to improve the nutritional value, biological activity and flavor of food. This study investigated the pH, titratable acidity, total polysaccharide, total flavone, total saponin, total polyphenol, and antioxidant activity of the FH06 beverage before and after probiotic fermentation. Results: After fermentation, FH06 had lower contents of total polysaccharides, total flavonoids, total saponins and total polyphenols but higher titratable acidity. The antioxidant activity was tested by total antioxidant capacity (FRAP method) and DPPH· scavenging ability. The FRAP value significantly increased after fermentation (P < 0.05), and the maximum increase was observed for Lactobacillus fermentum grx08 at 25.87%. For DPPH· scavenging ability, the value of all fermentations decreased, and L. fermentum grx08 had the smallest reduction at 2.21% (P < 0.05). The results of GC-MS and sensory analysis showed that fermentation eliminated bad flavors, such as grass, cassia and bitterness, and highlighted the fruit aroma and soft sour taste. Conclusion: The FRAP value and sensory flavor of FH06 fermentation by L. fermentum grx08 were significantly improved, indicating its great potential as a functional food with both strong antioxidant activity and good flavor. Abstract
The biofilm communities of Candida are resistant to various antifungal treatments. The ability of Candida to form biofilms on abiotic and biotic surfaces is considered one of the most important virulence factors of these fungi. Extracellular DNA and exopolysaccharides can lower the antifungal penetration to the deeper layers of the biofilms, which is a serious concern supported by the emergence of azole-resistant isolates and Candida strains with decreased antifungal susceptibility. Since the biofilms' resistance to common antifungal drugs has become more widespread in recent years, more investigations should be performed to develop novel, inexpensive, non-toxic, and effective treatment approaches for controlling biofilm-associated infections. Scientists have used various natural compounds for inhibiting and degrading Candida biofilms. Curcumin, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, carvacrol, thymol, terpinen-4-ol, linalool, geraniol, cineole, saponin, camphor, borneol, camphene, carnosol, citronellol, coumarin, epigallocatechin gallate, eucalyptol, limonene, menthol, piperine, saponin, α-terpineol, β-pinene, and citral are the major natural compounds that have been used widely for the inhibition and destruction of Candida biofilms. These compounds suppress not only fungal adhesion and biofilm formation but also destroy mature biofilm communities of Candida. Additionally, these natural compounds interact with various cellular processes of Candida, such as ABC-transported mediated drug transport, cell cycle progression, mitochondrial activity, and ergosterol, chitin, and glucan biosynthesis. The use of various drug delivery platforms can enhance the antibiofilm efficacy of natural compounds. Therefore, these drug delivery platforms should be considered as potential candidates for coating catheters and other medical material surfaces. A future goal will be to develop natural compounds as antibiofilm agents that can be used to treat infections by multi-drug-resistant Candida biofilms. Since exact interactions of natural compounds and biofilm structures have not been elucidated, further in vitro toxicology and animal experiments are required. In this article, we have discussed various aspects of natural compound usage for inhibition and destruction of Candida biofilms, along with the methods and procedures that have been used for improving the efficacy of these compounds.

Abstract
Terpenes may be converted by electrochemical oxidation to various oxidized products with appealing aroma properties. In this study, (R)-limonene was anodically oxidized in the presence of ethanol, and the resulting mixture exhibited a pleasing fruity, herbal, citrus-like, and resinous odor. The aroma-active compounds were purified by means of preparative high-performance liquid chromatography, and their structures were elucidated by means of gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, the odor of the isolated compounds was determined by means of GC-olfactometry. Seventeen compounds were isolated, and for only four of them, analytical data had been reported previously in the literature. Furthermore, only for two of the compounds, an odor description had been available in the literature.

Abstract
Several non-canonical, methylated terpenes have been described as products of genetically modified Escherichia coli recently, and the aroma properties of 28 odor-active methylated derivatives of prenol, isoprenol, bornane, camphene, carene, citronellol, fenchol, geraniol, limonene, linalool, terpineol, and farnesol were characterized for the first time in the current study. Twelve methylated monoterpenes exhibited a particularly intense and pleasant odor and were therefore chosen for the determination of their respective odor thresholds (OTs) in comparison to their non-methylated equivalents. In addition to the determination of OTs based on the literature value for the internal standard, (2E)-decenal, the threshold values of the compounds with individually determined OTs of the participants were calculated. This enabled a more precise identification of the OTs. Among the non-canonical terpenes, the lowest OTs in the air were found for 2-methyllinalool (flowery, 1.8 ng L−1), 2-methyl-α-fenchol (moldy, 3.6 ng L−1), 2-methylgeraniol (flowery, 5.4 ng L−1), 2-methylcitronellol (citrus-like, 7.2 ng L−1), and 4-methylgeraniol (citrus-like, 16 ng L−1). The derivatives of geraniol, linalool, and citronellol showed very pleasant odor impressions, which could make them interesting for use as flavoring agents in the flavor and fragrance industry.

Abstract
The aquaculture sector is one of the main activities contributing to food security for humanity around the globe. However, aquatic animals are susceptible to several farming stressors involved in deteriorated growth performance, reduced productivity, and eventually high mortality rates. In some countries still, antibiotics and chemotherapies are comprehensively applied to control biotic stressors. Aside from the apparent benefits, the continuous usage of antibiotics develops bacterial resistance, deteriorates bacterial populations, and accumulates these compounds in the aquatic environment. Alternatively, environmentally friendly additives were used to avoid the direct and indirect impacts on the aquatic ecosystem and human health. In aquaculture, medicinal herbs and extracts are extensively used and approved for their growth-promoting, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative properties. Herbal essential oils contain many bioactive components with powerful antibacterial, antioxidative, and immunostimulant potentials, suggesting their application for aquatic animals. Essential oils can be provided via diet and can benefit aquatic animals by improving their well-being and health status. The use of essential oils in aquafeed has been studied in a variety of aquatic animals to determine their beneficial roles and optimum doses. The outputs illustrated that herbal essential oils are exciting alternatives to antibiotics with prominent growth promotion, antioxidative, and immunostimulant roles. Herein, we reviewed the beneficial roles of essential oils in aquaculture. This review also aims to describe trends in herbal essential oils use, mainly in commercial fish species, and to analyze different factors that affect essential oils’ efficacy on the growth performance, antioxidative, and immune responses of finfish species.

Abstract
Ocimum basilicum L. (O. basilicum) and its constituents show anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects. The plant has been mainly utilized in traditional medicine for the treatment of respiratory disorders. In the present article, effects of O. basilicum and its main constituents on respiratory disorders, assessed by experimental and clinical studies, were reviewed. Relevant studies were searched in PubMed, Science Direct, Medline, and Embase databases using relevant keywords including "Ocimum basilicum," "basilicums," "linalool," "respiratory disease," "asthma," "obstructive pulmonary disease," "bronchodilatory," "bronchitis," "lung cancer," and "pulmonary fibrosis," and other related keywords.The reviewed articles showed both relieving and preventing effects of the plant and its ingredients on obstructive pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other respiratory disorders such as bronchitis, aspergillosis tuberculosis, and lung cancer. The results of the reviewed articles suggest the therapeutic potential of O. basilicum and its constituent, linalool, on respiratory disorders.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop polysaccharide-based emulsions incorporated with lavender essential oil and their application on cellulosic support for patches obtaining. The lavender essential oil has been added to emulsions as an active compound mainly due to its antimicrobial properties. In this study, emulsions were used to deliver active ingredients (lavender essential oil). The chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of seven emulsions (RiACL) were evaluated by determining rheological parameters and microbiological analysis. One of the emulsions (R7ACL) was applied to cellulosic support to obtain non-irritating textiles with controlled release of the active compound and moisturizing effects. Obtained cellulosic support was analyzed in terms of active compound controlled release, toxicity and antimicrobial testing, and skin analysis in healthy volunteers. It was found that the cellulosic supports treated with O/W emulsions are non-irritating, have softness and moisturizing effects, and can be used safely in topical applications for patches obtaining.

Abstract
Baculoviruses are double-stranded DNA entomopathogenic viruses that infect predominantly insects of the order Lepidoptera. Research in the last decade has started to disentangle the mechanisms underlying the insect-virus interaction, particularly focusing on the effects of the baculovirus infection in the host's physiology. Among crucial physiological functions, olfaction has a key role in reproductive tasks, food source detection and enemy avoidance. In this work, we describe that Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) induces expression changes in some odorant receptors (ORs) - the centrepiece of insect's olfaction - when infecting larvae from its natural host Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Different ORs are up-regulated in larvae after SeMNPV infection, and two of them, SexiOR35 and SexiOR23, were selected for further functional characterization by heterologous expression in empty neurons of Drosophila melanogaster coupled to single-sensillum recordings. SexiOR35 appears to be a broadly tuned receptor able to recognise multiple and different chemical compounds. SexiOR23, although correctly expressed in Drosophila neurons, did not display any significant response to a panel of 58 stimuli. Behavioural experiments revealed that larvae infected by SeMNPV exhibit altered olfactory-driven behaviour to diet when it is supplemented with the plant volatiles linalool or estragole, two of the main SexiOR35 ligands, supporting the hypothesis that viral infection triggers changes in host perception through changes in the expression level of specific ORs.

Abstract
This paper studied the effects of freeze-thaw (FT) cycles on the juice properties and aroma profiles, and the hot-air drying kinetics of frozen blueberry. After FT treatment, the juice yield increased while pH and total soluble solids of the juice keep unchanged. The total anthocyanins contents and DPPH antioxidant activities of the juice decreased by FT treatments. The electronic nose shows that FT treatments significantly change the aroma profiles of the juice. The four main volatile substances in the fresh juice are (E)-2-hexenal, α-terpineol, hexanal and linalyl formate, which account for 48.5 ± 0.1%, 17.6 ± 0.2%, 14.0 ± 1.5% and 7.8 ± 2.7% of relative proportions based on total ion chromatogram (TIC) peak areas. In the FT-treated samples, the amount of (E)-2-hexenal and hexanal decreased significantly while α-terpineol and linalyl formate remained almost unchanged. Repeated FT cycles increased the ethanol content and destroyed the original green leafy flavor. Finally, the drying kinetics of FT-treated blueberries was tested. One FT treatment can shorten the drying time by about 30% to achieve the same water content. The Deff values of the FT-treated sample are similar, which are about twice as large as the value of the fresh sample. The results will be beneficial for the processing of frozen blueberry into juice or dried fruits.

Abstract
Haemonchus contortus, a blood-sucking parasite of small ruminants, produces very important economic losses in the productive sector. This abomasum parasite has become resistant to most commercial drugs worldwide, and alternatives to fight this problem are urgently needed. Essential oils (EO) are a complex mixture of volatile secondary metabolites, composed mainly by terpenoids and phenolic compounds, from plants that have several pharmacological properties, including anthelmintic activity. Particularly, citrus peel is a source of cold-pressed EO, where limonene is its major component, and can be used as an additional food component for ruminants. The aim of the present work was to determine the in vitro anthelmintic activity of EO from Citrus bergamia (EOB), C. x paradisii (EOG) and limonene against the benzimidazole-susceptible Kirby isolate of H. contortus, using the egg hatch test (EHT) and the exsheathed third stage larval motility test (XLMT) using a WMicroTracker equipment. Albendazole (ABZ) and monepantel (MON) were used as positive controls. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) in XLMT were 8.77 and 13.88 µg/ml for EOB and EOG respectively, after an incubation of 72 h. An interesting observation on XLMT resulted when the positive controls were tested on the same plate, but in different well of the EOB. The volatile components of the EO significantly influenced (P < 0.05) the percentage of larval motility, reducing values from 66.9 to 19.6% for ABZ, and from 72.8 to 33.7% for MON, when comparing the activity of positive controls in a control plate without EO. The in vitro anthelmintic activity of EOB and EOG shows that they could be interesting candidates for nematode control. It is still necessary additional studies against the adult stage of H. contortus in efficacy trials in infected animals to validate their anthelmintic activity.

Abstract
The wood of the Cembran pine (Pinus cembra L.), also known as Swiss pine, Arolla pine or Stone pine, has a prominent and long-lasting odor which has been reported to relieve stress in humans. However, the odorants responsible for this are unknown and it is also unclear whether the odor profile depends on the origin of the trees, namely different geographical regions and pedoclimatic conditions. Therefore, in this study human sensory analyses together with isolation and analysis of the target odorants via solvent-assisted flavor evaporation were performed. Afterwards, comparative odor extract dilution analysis (cOEDA) was applied to investigate the odorous constituents of pinewood samples from forests in Austria and Italy. Specific odorants were thereby identified using one-dimensional and two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry using two capillary columns with different polarities (DB-5 and DB-FFAP). In total, 103 odorants were detected with successful identification of 98 of these substances. The identified odorants were predominately monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes as well as organic acids. Several compounds including germacrene D, thymol, carvacrol, rotundone, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, cinnamaldehyde, and ethyl cinnamate are reported here for the first time as odorous constituents of pinewood. Principal component analysis of the data obtained from sensory evaluation and cOEDA indicated that terpenes and sesquiterpenes were correlated with higher hedonic rates for the wood samples. Moreover, a Mantel test between the geographical distances of the trees and their sensory and cOEDA values demonstrated that the origin of the trees had a significant impact on the sensory characteristics of the wood, in agreement with the differences in the relative proportions of different volatile components. As such, the odor of Cembran pinewood is prone to variation but, yet, unique.

Abstract
Thymoquinone was recently reported as having a unique pencil-like odor and being the impact compound for the cedar-like and cedar wood-based product smell such as pencils. The compounds thymol and carvacrol are structurally related odorants commonly found in plants and foods such as thyme and oregano, also having a significant contribution to their overall aroma. However, a systematic elucidation of the sensory properties in this class of oxygenated, aromatic monoterpenoids has not been carried out. To close this gap and gain new insights into structure-odor relationships leading to pencil-like and woody odors, 19 structurally related derivatives of p-cymene starting from thymol and carvacrol were synthesized and characterized. The compounds had odor thresholds ranging from 2.0 ng/L air to 388.8 ng/L air, being lowest for thymol and carvacrol and highest for thymohydroquinone. The compounds smelled mostly thyme-like, oregano-like, and pencil-like with phenolic, earthy, and medicinal variations in their odor character, which could be successfully linked to structural motifs.

Abstract
The aroma profile is an important marker for wine quality. Various classes of compounds are responsible for the aroma of wine, and one such class is terpenoids. In the context of this work, a validated gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for the quantitation of terpenoids in red and white wine using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) was established. Calibrations were performed in the respective base wine using both sample preparation methods. The linearity, precision and accuracy evaluated for the respective matrices were excellent for both sample preparations. However, the HS-SPME approach was more sensitive and more accurate. For both sample preparations, the quantification limits were lower than the odor thresholds in wine. The terpenoid concentrations (µg/L) were evaluated for 13 white wines using both sample preparation methods. Importantly, the online HS-SPME approach was more sensitive than the offline SPE method. The major terpenoids identified in the white wines evaluated were linalool (0.2-63 µg/L), geraniol (nd-66 µg/L) and α-terpineol (nd-85 µg/L).

Abstract
Often treated as an accessory science, organic residue analysis (ORA) has the capacity to illuminate otherwise hidden aspects of ancient technology, culture, and economy, and therein can play a central role in archaeological inquiry. Through ORA, both the intact vessel freshly excavated from a tomb and the sherd tucked away in a museum storage closet can offer insights into their contents, their histories, and the cultures that created them—provided the results can be carefully calibrated to account for their treatment during and after excavation. The case study below presents ORA data obtained from a range of artifacts from Late Bronze Age Crete, setting results from freshly-excavated and legacy objects alongside one another. Although legacy objects do tend to yield diminished results from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective, our comparative work has demonstrated both their value and untapped potential when their object biographies are carefully considered. It also sheds light on biomarker degradation processes, which have implications for methodologies of extraction and interpretation of legacy objects. Comparative studies such as these broaden the pool of viable ORA candidates, and therein amplify ORA’s ability to reveal patterns of consumption as well as ecological and environmental change. They also highlight the role and value of data-sharing in collaborative environments such as the OpenARCHEM archaeometric database.

Abstract
Despite being isomers having the same citrus-like, floral odor, geraniol, 1, and nerol, 3, show different odor thresholds. To date, no systematic studies are at hand elucidating the structural features required for their specific odor properties. Therefore, starting from these two basic structures and their corresponding esters, namely, geranyl acetate, 2, and neryl acetate, 4, a total of 12 oxygenated compounds were synthesized and characterized regarding retention indices (RI), mass spectrometric (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data. All compounds were individually tested for their odor qualities and odor thresholds in air (OT). Geraniol, the Z-isomer, with an OT of 14 ng/L, was found to be more potent than its E-isomer, nerol, which has an OT of 60 ng/L. However, 8-oxoneryl acetate was the most potent derivative within this study, exhibiting an OT of 8.8 ng/L, whereas 8-oxonerol was the least potent with an OT of 493 ng/L. Interestingly, the 8-oxo derivatives smell musty and fatty, whereas the 8-hydroxy derivatives show odor impressions similar to those of 1 and 3. 8-Carboxygeraniol was found to be odorless, whereas its E-isomer, 8-carboxynerol, showed fatty, waxy, and greasy impressions. Overall, we observed that oxygenation on C-8 affects mainly the odor quality, whereas the E/ Z position of the functional group on C-1 affects the odor potency.

Abstract
Terpenoids are major subcomponents in aroma substances which harbor sedative physiological potential. We have demonstrated that various monoterpenoids such as the acyclic linalool enhance GABAergic currents in an allosteric manner in vitro upon overexpression of inhibitory α1β2 GABAA receptors in various expression systems. However, in plants or humans, i.e., following intake via inhalation or ingestion, linalool undergoes metabolic modifications including oxygenation and acetylation, which may affect the modulatory efficacy of the generated linalool derivatives. Here, we analyzed the modulatory potential of linalool derivatives at α1β2γ2 GABAA receptors upon transient overexpression. Following receptor expression control, electrophysiological recordings in a whole cell configuration were used to determine the chloride influx upon co-application of GABA EC10−30 together with the modulatory substance. Our results show that only oxygenated linalool metabolites at carbon 8 positively affect GABAergic currents whereas derivatives hydroxylated or carboxylated at carbon 8 were rather ineffective. Acetylated linalool derivatives resulted in non-significant changes of GABAergic currents. We can conclude that metabolism of linalool reduces its positive allosteric potential at GABAA receptors compared to the significant potentiation effects of the parent molecule linalool itself.

Abstract
Backgroud Smoking is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases as well as pulmonary dysfunction. In particular, adolescent smoking has been reported to have a higher latent risk for cardiovascular disease. Despite the risk to and vulnerability of adolescents to smoking, the mechanisms underlying the effects of acute nicotine exposure on adolescents remain unknown. This study therefore evaluated the mechanism underlying the effects of linalyl acetate on cardiovascular changes in adolescent rats with acute nicotine exposure. Methods Parameters analyzed included heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, vascular contractility, and nitric oxide levels. Results Compared with nicotine alone, those treated with nicotine plus 10 mg/kg (p = 0.036) and 100 mg/kg (p = 0.023) linalyl acetate showed significant reductions in HR. Moreover, the addition of 1 mg/kg (p = 0.011), 10 mg/kg (p = 0.010), and 100 mg/kg (p = 0.011) linalyl acetate to nicotine resulted in significantly lower LDH activity. Nicotine also showed a slight relaxation effect, followed by a sustained recontraction phase, whereas nicotine plus linalyl acetate or nifedipine showed a constant relaxation effect on contraction of mouse aorta (p < 0.001). Furthermore, nicotine-induced increases in nitrite levels were decreased by treatment with linalyl acetate (p < 0.001). Conclusions Taken together, our findings suggest that linalyl acetate treatment resulted in recovery of cell damage and cardiovascular changes caused by acute nicotine-induced cardiovascular disruption. Our evaluation of the influence of acute nicotine provides potential insights into the effects of environmental tobacco smoke and suggests linalyl acetate as an available mitigating agent.

Abstract
This manuscript describes the design considerations, implementation, and laboratory validation of an odor sensing module whose purpose is to support people that suffer from incontinence. Because of the requirements expressed by the affected end-users the odor sensing unit is realized as a portable accessory that may be connected to any pre-existing smart device. We have opted for a low-cost, low-power consuming metal oxide based gas detection approach to highlight the viability of developing an inexpensive yet helpful odor recognition technology. The system consists of a hotplate employing, inkjet-printed p-type semiconducting layers of copper(II) oxide, and chromium titanium oxide. Both functional layers are characterized with respect to their gas-sensitive behavior towards humidity, ammonia, methylmercaptan, and dimethylsulfide and we demonstrate detection limits in the parts-per-billion range for the two latter gases. Employing a temperature variation scheme that reads out the layer’s resistivity in a steady-state, we use each sensor chip as a virtual array. With this setup, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting odors associated with incontinence.

Abstract
The trigeminal and olfactory systems interact during sensory processing of odor. Here, we investigate odor-evoked modulations of brainstem respiratory networks in a decerebrated perfused brainstem preparation of rat with intact olfactory bulbs. Intranasal application of non-trigeminal odors (rose) did not evoke respiratory modulation in absence of cortico-limbic circuits. Conversely, trigeminal odors such as menthol or lavender evoked robust respiratory modulations via direct activation of preserved brainstem circuits. Trigeminal odors consistently triggered short phrenic nerve bursts (fictive sniff), and the strong trigeminal odor menthol also triggered a slowing of phrenic nerve frequency. Phrenic and vagal nerve recordings reveal that fictive sniffs transiently interrupted odor evoked tonic postinspiratory vagal discharge. This motor pattern is significantly different from normal (eupneic) respiratory activity. In conclusion, we show for the first time the direct involvement of brainstem circuits in primary odor processing to evoke protective sniffs and respiratory modulation in the complete absence of forebrain commands.
