Frontiers of premature ovarian insufficiency research: an analysis from the top 100 most influential articles in the field

Objectives: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a serious condition that affects women worldwide, In recent years, the number of research publications on POI has increased over the last decades because of the advancement of cutting-edge research in gynecology and the deepening of disciplinary interactions. At the same time, there is a more urgent need to systematically analyze and review existing studies to generalize the research paradigm and disciplinary structure of the field under technological changes.

Materials and methods: We selected the top 100 most cited papers in the Web of Science (WOS) SCI-Expanded database. Knowledge graphs were constructed through the VOS viewer, Cite Space, and Scimago Graphica software, and then relevant information retrieved from the literature was edited using Excel to assess research priorities and trends in the field.

Results: A total of 53 periodicals from 34 different nations and regions published the 100 most-cited publications between 1999 and 2024. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism published the majority of the papers, while The Lancet had the highest average number of citations per piece. The United States of America produced the highest contribution in terms of publications, with China and France closely trailing after. In terms of total publications, Erasmus MC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Shandong University each contributed the highest number of papers. The main categories were obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology and metabolism, and reproductive biology. The top five keywords were: failure, women, ANTI-MULLERIAN HORMONE, NATURAL MENOPAUSE, and AGE. The study of HERITAGE AND GENETICS, CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES, and CELL BIOLOGY AND IMMUNOGENETICS is becoming more and more popular in POI, as shown by cluster analysis.

Conclusions: Bibliometric analysis enables POI researchers to efficiently and visibly pinpoint the cutting-edge areas and focal points of their study. Potential topics of future study may include genetic and molecular biological pathways, cardiovascular pathology, and immunology.

Bibliometric analysis of skeletal muscle ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) research from 1986 to 2022

Introduction

Tissue damage due to ischemia and reperfusion is a critical medical problem worldwide. Studies in this field have made remarkable advances in understanding the pathogenesis of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and its treatment with new and known drugs. However, no bibliometric analysis exists in this area of research.

Methods

Research articles and reviews related to skeletal muscle I/R from 1986 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2019, VOSviewer (version 1.6.19), Bibliometrix (R-Tool for R-Studio), and CiteSpace (version 6.1.R5).

Results

A total of 3682 research articles and reviews from 2846 institutions in 83 countries were considered in this study. Most studies were conducted in the USA. Hobson RW (UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School) had the highest publication, and Korthuis RJ (Louisiana State University) had the highest co-citations. Our analysis showed that, though the Journal of Surgical Research was most favored, the Journal of Biological Chemistry had the highest number of co-citations. The pathophysiology, interventions, and molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle I/R injury emerged as the primary research areas, with "apoptosis," "signaling pathway," and "oxidative stress" as the main keywords of research hotspots.

Conclusions

This study provides a thorough overview of research trends and focal points in skeletal muscle I/R injury by applying bibliometric and visualization techniques. The insights gained from our findings offer a profound understanding of the evolving landscape of skeletal muscle I/R injury research, thereby functioning as a valuable reference and roadmap for future investigations.

Bibliometric and visual analysis of intestinal ischemia reperfusion from 2004 to 2022

Background

Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a common tissue-organ damage occurring in surgical practice. This study aims to comprehensively review the collaboration and impact of countries, institutions, authors, subject areas, journals, keywords, and critical literature on intestinal I/R injury from a bibliometric perspective, and to assess the evolution of clustering of knowledge structures and identify hot trends and emerging topics.

Methods

Articles and reviews related to intestinal I/R were retrieved through subject search from Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analyses were conducted on Excel 365, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix (R-Tool of R-Studio).

Results

A total of 1069 articles and reviews were included from 2004 to 2022. The number of articles on intestinal I/R injury gradually plateaued, but the number of citations increased. These publications were mainly from 985 institutions in 46 countries, led by China and the United States. Liu Kx published the most papers, while Chiu Cj had the largest number of co-citations. Analysis of the journals with the most outputs showed that most journals focused on surgical sciences, cell biology, and immunology. Macroscopic sketch and microscopic characterization of the entire knowledge domain were achieved through co-citation analysis. The roles of cell death, exosomes, intestinal flora, and anesthetics in intestinal I/R injury are the current and developing research focuses. The keywords "dexmedetomidine", "proliferation", and "ferroptosis" may also become new trends and focus of future research.

Conclusion

This study comprehensively reviews the research on intestinal I/R injury using bibliometric and visualization methods, and will help scholars better understand the dynamic evolution of intestinal I/R injury and provide directions for future research.
