Volume Conduction Influences Scalp-Based Connectivity Estimates

The effects of spatial leakage correction on the reliability of EEG-based functional connectivity networks

Electroencephalography (EEG) functional connectivity (FC) estimates are confounded by the volume conduction problem. This effect can be greatly reduced by applying FC measures insensitive to instantaneous, zero-lag dependencies (corrected measures). However, numerous studies showed that FC measures sensitive to volume conduction (uncorrected measures) exhibit higher reliability and higher subject-level identifiability. We tested how source reconstruction contributed to the reliability difference of EEG FC measures on a large (n = 201) resting-state data set testing eight FC measures (including corrected and uncorrected measures). We showed that the high reliability of uncorrected FC measures in resting state partly stems from source reconstruction: idiosyncratic noise patterns define a baseline resting-state functional network that explains a significant portion of the reliability of uncorrected FC measures. This effect remained valid for template head model-based, as well as individual head model-based source reconstruction. Based on our findings we made suggestions how to best use spatial leakage corrected and uncorrected FC measures depending on the main goals of the study.

Functional Connectivity Alterations in Patients with Post-stroke Epilepsy Based on Source-level EEG and Graph Theory

We investigated the differences in functional connectivity based on the source-level electroencephalography (EEG) analysis between stroke patients with and without post-stroke epilepsy (PSE). Thirty stroke patients with PSE and 35 stroke patients without PSE were enrolled. EEG was conducted during a resting state period. We used a Brainstorm program for source estimation and the connectivity matrix. Data were processed according to EEG frequency bands. We used a BRAPH program to apply a graph theoretical analysis. In the beta band, radius and diameter were increased in patients with PSE than in those without PSE (2.699 vs. 2.579, adjusted p = 0.03; 2.261 vs. 2.171, adjusted p = 0.03). In the low gamma band, radius was increased in patients with PSE than in those without PSE (2.808 vs. 2.617, adjusted p = 0.03). In the high gamma band, the radius, diameter, average eccentricity, and characteristic path length were increased (1.828 vs. 1.559, adjusted p < 0.01; 2.653 vs. 2.306, adjusted p = 0.01; 2.212 vs. 1.913, adjusted p < 0.01; 1.425 vs. 1.286, adjusted p = 0.01), whereas average strength, mean clustering coefficient, and transitivity were decreased in patients with PSE than in those without PSE (49.955 vs. 55.055, adjusted p < 0.01; 0.727 vs. 0.810, adjusted p < 0.01; 1.091 vs. 1.215, adjusted p < 0.01). However, in the delta, theta, and alpha bands, none of the functional connectivity measures were different between groups. We demonstrated significant alterations of functional connectivity in patients with PSE, who have decreased segregation and integration in brain network, compared to those without PSE.

Real-time cortical dynamics during motor inhibition

The inhibition of action is a fundamental executive mechanism of human behaviour that involve a complex neural network. In spite of the progresses made so far, many questions regarding the brain dynamics occurring during action inhibition are still unsolved. Here, we used a novel approach optimized to investigate real-time effective brain dynamics, which combines transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with simultaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. 22 healthy volunteers performed a motor Go/NoGo task during TMS of the hand-hotspot of the primary motor cortex (M1) and whole-scalp EEG recordings. We reconstructed source-based real-time spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical activity and cortico-cortical connectivity throughout the task. Our results showed a task-dependent bi-directional change in theta/gamma supplementary motor cortex (SMA) and M1 connectivity that, when participants were instructed to inhibit their response, resulted in an increase of a specific TMS-evoked EEG potential (N100), likely due to a GABA-mediated inhibition. Interestingly, these changes were linearly related to reaction times, when participants were asked to produce a motor response. In addition, TMS perturbation revealed a task-dependent long-lasting modulation of SMA-M1 natural frequencies, i.e. alpha/beta activity. Some of these results are shared by animal models and shed new light on the physiological mechanisms of motor inhibition in humans.

Increased Thalamic Connectivity in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy Based on Electroencephalography Source-Level Analysis

Background: This study investigated alterations in the intrinsic thalamic network of patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) based on an electroencephalography (EEG) source-level analysis. Materials and Methods: We enrolled patients newly diagnosed with JME as well as healthy controls. The assessments were conducted in the resting state. We computed sources based on the scalp electrical potentials using a minimum-norm imaging method and a standardized, low-resolution, brain electromagnetic tomography approach. To create a functional connectivity matrix, we used the Talairach atlas to define thalamic nodes and applied the coherence method to measure brain synchronization as edges. We then calculated the intrinsic thalamic network using graph theory. We compared the intrinsic thalamic network of patients with JME with those of healthy controls. Results: This study included 67 patients with JME and 66 healthy controls. EEG source-level analysis revealed significant differences in the intrinsic thalamic networks between patients with JME and healthy controls. The measures of functional connectivity (radius, diameter, and characteristic path length) were significantly lower in patients with JME than in healthy controls (radius: 2.769 vs. 3.544, p = 0.015; diameter: 4.464 vs. 5.443, p = 0.024; and characteristic path length: 2.248 vs. 2.616, p = 0.046). Conclusions: We demonstrated alterations in the intrinsic thalamic network in patients with JME compared with those in healthy controls based on the EEG source-level analysis. These findings indicated increased thalamic connectivity in the JME group. These intrinsic thalamic network changes may be related to the pathophysiology of JME.

Feedforward connectivity patterns from visual areas to the front of the brain contain information about sensory stimuli regardless of awareness or report

Current theories of consciousness can be categorized to some extent by their predictions about the putative role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in conscious perception. One family of the theories proposes that the PFC is necessary for conscious perception. The other postulates that the PFC is not necessary and that other areas (e.g., posterior cortical areas) are more important for conscious perception. No-report paradigms could potentially arbitrate the debate as they disentangle task reporting from conscious perception. While previous no-report paradigms tend to point to a reduction in PFC activity, they have not examined the critical role of the PFC in "monitoring" or "reading out" the patterns of activity in the sensory cortex to generate conscious perception. To address this, we reanalysed electroencephalography (EEG) data from a no-report inattentional blindness paradigm (Shafto & Pitts, 2015). We examined the role of feedforward input patterns to the PFC from sensory cortices. We employed nonparametric spectral Granger causality and quantified the amount of information that reflected the contents of consciousness using multivariate classifiers. Unexpectedly, regardless of whether the stimulus was consciously seen or not, we found that information relating to the current sensory stimulus was present in the pattern of inputs from visual areas to the PFC. In light of these findings, we suggest various theories of consciousness need to be revised to accommodate the fact that the contents of consciousness are decodable from the input patterns from posterior sensory regions to the PFC, regardless of awareness (or report).

Cerebellar EEG source localization reveals age-related compensatory activity moderated by genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease

The apolipoprotein-E (APOE) ε4 allele is the greatest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), but alone it is not sufficiently predictive. Because neuropathological changes associated with AD begin decades before cognitive symptoms, neuroimaging of healthy, cognitively intact ε4 carriers (ε4+) may enable early characterization of patterns associated with risk for future decline. Research in the cerebral cortex highlights a period of compensatory recruitment in elders and ε4+, which serves to maintain cognitive functioning. Yet, AD-related changes may occur even earlier in the cerebellum. Advances in electroencephalography (EEG) source localization now allow effective modeling of cerebellar activity. Importantly, healthy aging and AD are associated with declines in both cerebellar functions and executive functioning (EF). However, it is not known whether cerebellar activity can detect pre-symptomatic AD risk. Thus, the current study analyzed cerebellar EEG source localization during an EF-dependent stop-signal task (i.e., inhibitory control) in healthy, intact older adults (Mage  = 80 years; 20 ε4+, 25 ε4-). Task performance was comparable between groups. Older age predicted greater activity in left crus II and lobule VIIb during the P300 window (i.e., performance evaluation), consistent with age-related compensation. Age*ε4 moderations specifically showed that compensatory patterns were evident only in ε4-, suggesting that cerebellar compensatory resources may already be depleted in healthy ε4+ elders. Thus, the posterolateral cerebellum is sensitive to AD-related neural deficits in healthy elders. Characterization of these patterns may be essential for the earliest possible detection of AD risk, which would enable critical early intervention prior to symptom onset.

Additive and Interactive Effects of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Tic Disorder on Brain Connectivity

BACKGROUND

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and persistent tic disorder (PTD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that frequently co-occur. Contributions of each disorder to cognitive and behavioral deficits have been reported. In this paper, we tested 3 models of pathophysiology for the two disorders (additive, interactive, and phenotypic) using resting-state connectivity associated with each disorder separately and together.

METHODS

Participants were 148 children (55 with ADHD only, 33 with ADHD and PTD, 27 with PTD only, and 33 healthy control subjects) at ages 8 to 12 years. Following diagnostic interviews and behavioral assessment, participants underwent a 128-channel electroencephalography recording. Resting-state, cortical source-level effective connectivity was analyzed across the 4 groups using a 2 × 2 factorial design with factors of ADHD (with/without) and PTD (with/without).

RESULTS

ADHD diagnosis was the primary driver of cognitive and behavioral deficits, while deficits associated with PTD were primarily with thought problems and internalizing problems when compared with controls. Subadditive effects were observed in co-occurring ADHD+PTD for parent-rated behavioral problems and cognitive functions. Aberrant effective connectivity was primarily associated with ADHD, more specifically with lower posterior and occipital-frontal connectivity, while children with PTD exhibited greater left postcentral to precuneus connectivity. Weaker ADHD-related connectivity was associated with more severe behavioral problems, including internalizing behaviors, thought problems, and working memory deficits.

CONCLUSIONS

Similar to general behavioral deficits, aberrant resting-state neural connectivity in pediatric ADHD and PTD combines additively in co-occurring cases. The findings of this study support ADHD as a focus of treatment in comorbid cases, given the driving role of ADHD in both behavioral and neurophysiological deficits.

Fusing the spatial structure of electroencephalogram channels can increase the individualization of the functional connectivity network

An electroencephalogram (EEG) functional connectivity (FC) network is individualized and plays a significant role in EEG-based person identification. Traditional FC networks are constructed by statistical dependence and correlation between EEG channels, without considering the spatial relationships between the channels. The individual identification algorithm based on traditional FC networks is sensitive to the integrity of channels and crucially relies on signal preprocessing; therefore, finding a new presentation for FC networks may help increase the performance of the identification algorithms. EEG signals are smooth across space owing to the volume conduction effect. Considering such spatial relationships among channels can provide a more accurate representation of FC networks. In this study, we propose an EEG FC network with virtual nodes that combines the spatial relationships and functional connectivity of channels. The comparison results for individual identification show that the novel EEG network is more individualized and achieves an accuracy of 98.64% for data without preprocessing. Furthermore, our algorithm is more robust in reducing the number of channels and can perform well even when a large area of channels is removed.

Identifying good practices for detecting inter-regional linear functional connectivity from EEG

Aggregating voxel-level statistical dependencies between multivariate time series is an important intermediate step when characterising functional connectivity (FC) between larger brain regions. However, there are numerous ways in which voxel-level data can be aggregated into inter-regional FC, and the advantages of each of these approaches are currently unclear. In this study we generate ground-truth data and compare the performances of various pipelines that estimate directed and undirected linear phase-to-phase FC between regions. We test the ability of several existing and novel FC analysis pipelines to identify the true regions within which connectivity was simulated. We test various inverse modelling algorithms, strategies to aggregate time series within regions, and connectivity metrics. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the number of interactions, the signal-to-noise ratio, the noise mix, the interaction time delay, and the number of active sources per region on the ability of detecting phase-to-phase FC. Throughout all simulated scenarios, lowest performance is obtained with pipelines involving the absolute value of coherency. Further, the combination of dynamic imaging of coherent sources (DICS) beamforming with directed FC metrics that aggregate information across multiple frequencies leads to unsatisfactory results. Pipelines that show promising results with our simulated pseudo-EEG data involve the following steps: (1) Source projection using the linearly-constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer. (2) Principal component analysis (PCA) using the same fixed number of components within every region. (3) Calculation of the multivariate interaction measure (MIM) for every region pair to assess undirected phase-to-phase FC, or calculation of time-reversed Granger Causality (TRGC) to assess directed phase-to-phase FC. We formulate recommendations based on these results that may increase the validity of future experimental connectivity studies. We further introduce the free ROIconnect plugin for the EEGLAB toolbox that includes the recommended methods and pipelines that are presented here. We show an exemplary application of the best performing pipeline to the analysis of EEG data recorded during motor imagery.

Enhancing precision in human neuroscience

Human neuroscience has always been pushing the boundary of what is measurable. During the last decade, concerns about statistical power and replicability - in science in general, but also specifically in human neuroscience - have fueled an extensive debate. One important insight from this discourse is the need for larger samples, which naturally increases statistical power. An alternative is to increase the precision of measurements, which is the focus of this review. This option is often overlooked, even though statistical power benefits from increasing precision as much as from increasing sample size. Nonetheless, precision has always been at the heart of good scientific practice in human neuroscience, with researchers relying on lab traditions or rules of thumb to ensure sufficient precision for their studies. In this review, we encourage a more systematic approach to precision. We start by introducing measurement precision and its importance for well-powered studies in human neuroscience. Then, determinants for precision in a range of neuroscientific methods (MRI, M/EEG, EDA, Eye-Tracking, and Endocrinology) are elaborated. We end by discussing how a more systematic evaluation of precision and the application of respective insights can lead to an increase in reproducibility in human neuroscience.

Connectivity Analysis in EEG Data: A Tutorial Review of the State of the Art and Emerging Trends

Understanding how different areas of the human brain communicate with each other is a crucial issue in neuroscience. The concepts of structural, functional and effective connectivity have been widely exploited to describe the human connectome, consisting of brain networks, their structural connections and functional interactions. Despite high-spatial-resolution imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) being widely used to map this complex network of multiple interactions, electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings claim high temporal resolution and are thus perfectly suitable to describe either spatially distributed and temporally dynamic patterns of neural activation and connectivity. In this work, we provide a technical account and a categorization of the most-used data-driven approaches to assess brain-functional connectivity, intended as the study of the statistical dependencies between the recorded EEG signals. Different pairwise and multivariate, as well as directed and non-directed connectivity metrics are discussed with a pros-cons approach, in the time, frequency, and information-theoretic domains. The establishment of conceptual and mathematical relationships between metrics from these three frameworks, and the discussion of novel methodological approaches, will allow the reader to go deep into the problem of inferring functional connectivity in complex networks. Furthermore, emerging trends for the description of extended forms of connectivity (e.g., high-order interactions) are also discussed, along with graph-theory tools exploring the topological properties of the network of connections provided by the proposed metrics. Applications to EEG data are reviewed. In addition, the importance of source localization, and the impacts of signal acquisition and pre-processing techniques (e.g., filtering, source localization, and artifact rejection) on the connectivity estimates are recognized and discussed. By going through this review, the reader could delve deeply into the entire process of EEG pre-processing and analysis for the study of brain functional connectivity and learning, thereby exploiting novel methodologies and approaches to the problem of inferring connectivity within complex networks.

Increased Alpha-Band Connectivity During Tic Suppression in Children With Tourette Syndrome Revealed by Source Electroencephalography Analyses

BACKGROUND

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving chronic motor and phonic tics. Most individuals with TS can suppress their tics for at least a short period of time. Yet, the brain correlates of tic suppression are still poorly understood.

METHODS

In the current study, high-density electroencephalography was recorded during a resting-state and a tic suppression session in 72 children with TS. Functional connectivity between cortical regions was assessed in the alpha band (8-13 Hz) using an electroencephalography source connectivity method. Graph theory and network-based statistics were used to assess the global network topology and to identify brain regions showing increased connectivity during tic suppression.

RESULTS

Graph theoretical analyses revealed distinctive global network topology during tic suppression, relative to rest. Using network-based statistics, we found a subnetwork of increased connectivity during tic suppression (p < .001). That subnetwork encompassed many cortical areas, including the right superior frontal gyrus and the left precuneus, which are involved in the default mode network. We also found a condition-by-age interaction, suggesting age-mediated increases in connectivity during tic suppression.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that children with TS suppress their tics through a brain circuit involving distributed cortical regions, many of which are part of the default mode network. Brain connectivity during tic suppression also increases as youths with TS mature. These results highlight a mechanism by which children with TS may control their tics, which could be relevant for future treatment studies.

Reliable evaluation of functional connectivity and graph theory measures in source-level EEG: How many electrodes are enough?

OBJECTIVE

Using EEG to characterise functional brain networks through graph theory has gained significant interest in clinical and basic research. However, the minimal requirements for reliable measures remain largely unaddressed. Here, we examined functional connectivity estimates and graph theory metrics obtained from EEG with varying electrode densities.

METHODS

EEG was recorded with 128 electrodes in 33 participants. The high-density EEG data were subsequently subsampled into three sparser montages (64, 32, and 19 electrodes). Four inverse solutions, four measures of functional connectivity, and five graph theory metrics were tested.

RESULTS

The correlation between the results obtained with 128-electrode and the subsampled montages decreased as a function of the number of electrodes. As a result of decreased electrode density, the network metrics became skewed: mean network strength and clustering coefficient were overestimated, while characteristic path length was underestimated.

CONCLUSIONS

Several graph theory metrics were altered when electrode density was reduced. Our results suggest that, for optimal balance between resource demand and result precision, a minimum of 64 electrodes should be utilised when graph theory metrics are used to characterise functional brain networks in source-reconstructed EEG data.

SIGNIFICANCE

Characterisation of functional brain networks derived from low-density EEG warrants careful consideration.

Noninvasive neuroimaging and spatial filter transform enable ultra low delay motor imagery EEG decoding

Objective.The brain-computer interface (BCI) system based on sensorimotor rhythm can convert the human spirit into instructions for machine control, and it is a new human-computer interaction system with broad applications. However, the spatial resolution of scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) is limited due to the presence of volume conduction effects. Therefore, it is very meaningful to explore intracranial activities in a noninvasive way and improve the spatial resolution of EEG. Meanwhile, low-delay decoding is an essential factor for the development of a real-time BCI system.Approach.In this paper, EEG conduction is modeled by using public head anatomical templates, and cortical EEG is obtained using dynamic parameter statistical mapping. To solve the problem of a large amount of computation caused by the increase in the number of channels, the filter bank common spatial pattern method is used to obtain a spatial filter kernel, which reduces the computational cost of feature extraction to a linear level. And the feature classification and selection of important features are completed using a neural network containing band-spatial-time domain self-attention mechanisms.Main results.The results show that the method proposed in this paper achieves high accuracy for the four types of motor imagery EEG classification tasks, with fairly low latency and high physiological interpretability.Significance.The proposed decoding framework facilitates the realization of low-latency human-computer interaction systems.

Relationships between resting-state EEG functional networks organization and individual differences in mind wandering

When performing cognitively demanding tasks, people tend to experience momentary distractions or personal associations that intercept their stream of consciousness. This phenomenon is known as Mind Wandering (MW) and it has become a subject of neuroscientific investigations. Off-task thoughts can be analyzed during task performance, but currently, MW is also understood as a dimension of individual differences in cognitive processing. We wanted to recognize the intrinsically-organized functional networks that could be considered the neuronal basis for MW dispositional variability. To achieve this goal we recruited a group of normal adults, and eventually divided the group in half, based on participants' scores on the scale measuring dispositional MW. Next, these groups were compared regarding the arrangement of preselected intrinsic functional networks, which were reconstructed based on multi-channel signal-source resting-state EEG. It appeared that subjects who tend to mind wander often exhibited decreased synchronization within the default mode network, and, simultaneously, strengthened connectivity between 'on-task' networks of diverse functional specificity. Such within- and between networks integrity patterns might suggest that greater Mind Wanderers present an atypical organization of resting-state brain activity, which may translate into attenuated resources needed to maintain attentional control in task-related conditions.

Modeling Brain Functional Connectivity Patterns during an Isometric Arm Force Exertion Task at Different Levels of Perceived Exertion: A Graph Theoretical Approach

The perception of physical exertion is the cognitive sensation of work demands associated with voluntary muscular actions. Measurements of exerted force are crucial for avoiding the risk of overexertion and understanding human physical capability. For this purpose, various physiological measures have been used; however, the state-of-the-art in-force exertion evaluation lacks assessments of underlying neurophysiological signals. The current study applied a graph theoretical approach to investigate the topological changes in the functional brain network induced by predefined force exertion levels for twelve female participants during an isometric arm task and rated their perceived physical comfort levels. The functional connectivity under predefined force exertion levels was assessed using the coherence method for 84 anatomical brain regions of interest at the electroencephalogram (EEG) source level. Then, graph measures were calculated to quantify the network topology for two frequency bands. The results showed that high-level force exertions are associated with brain networks characterized by more significant clustering coefficients (6%), greater modularity (5%), higher global efficiency (9%), and less distance synchronization (25%) under alpha coherence. This study on the neurophysiological basis of physical exertions with various force levels suggests that brain regions communicate and cooperate higher when muscle force exertions increase to meet the demands of physically challenging tasks.

Evaluating interhemispheric connectivity during midline object recognition using EEG

Functional integration between two hemispheres is crucial for perceptual binding to occur when visual stimuli are presented in the midline of the visual field. Mima and colleagues (2001) showed using EEG that midline object recognition was associated with task-related decrease in alpha band power (alpha desynchronisation) and a transient increase in interhemispheric coherence. Our objective in the current study was to replicate the results of Mima et al. and to further evaluate interhemispheric effective connectivity during midline object recognition in source space. We recruited 11 healthy adult volunteers and recorded EEG from 64 channels while they performed a midline object recognition task. Task-related power and coherence were estimated in sensor and source spaces. Further, effective connectivity was evaluated using Granger causality. While we were able to replicate the alpha desynchronisation associated with midline object recognition, we could not replicate the coherence results of Mima et al. The data-driven approach that we employed in our study localised the source of alpha desynchronisation over the left occipito-temporal region. In the alpha band, we further observed significant increase in imaginary part of coherency between bilateral occipito-temporal regions during object recognition. Finally, Granger causality analysis between the left and right occipito-temporal regions provided an insight that even though there is bidirectional interaction, the left occipito-temporal region may be crucial for integrating the information necessary for object recognition. The significance of the current study lies in using high-density EEG and applying more appropriate and robust measures of connectivity as well as statistical analysis to validate and enhance our current knowledge on the neural basis of midline object recognition.

Comparison of MI-EEG Decoding in Source to Sensor Domain

Brain-computer interface (BCI) system based on sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) is a more natural brain-computer interaction system. In this paper, we propose a new multi-task motor imagery EEG (MI-EEG) classification framework. Unlike traditional EEG decoding algorithms, we perform the decoding task in the source domain rather than the sensor domain. In the proposed algorithm, we first build a conduction model of the signal using the public ICBM152 head model and the boundary element method (BEM). The sensor domain EEG was then mapped to the selected cortex region using standardized low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) technology, which benefit to address volume conduction effects problem. Finally, the source domain features are extracted and classified by combining FBCSP and simple LDA. The results show that the classification-decoding algorithm performed in the source domain can well solve the classification task of MI-EEG. In addition, we found that the source imaging method can significantly increase the number of available EEG channels, which can be expanded at least double. The preliminary results of this study encourage the implementation of EEG decoding algorithms in the source domain. Clinical Relevance- This confirms that better results can be obtained by performing MI-EEG decoding in the source domain than in the sensor domain.

Brain connectivity changes of propofol-induced altered states of consciousness using High-Density EEG Source Estimation

Through source estimation, high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) signals at scalp level can be converted into signals at cerebral cortex level, which helps to measure cortical activity during anesthesia induced changes in consciousness level to explore the mechanism. In this research, the high-density EEG of propofol-induced consciousness states alterations in 20 healthy adults were converted into cortical signals of 68 regions of interest (ROI), after alpha bandpass filtering, the pairwise orthogonal power envelope connectivity (PEC) was calculated. Then, due to the number of PECs was huge, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was used to select as few PECs as possible as the indicators to distinguish baseline (BS) and moderate sedation (MD) states. The results show that most PECs that can be used as indicators are related to ROI related to default mode network (DMN). At the same time, changes of thalamocortical connectivity and frontal-parietal connectivity could be observed, similar to the neuroimaging method of directly measuring cerebral cortical activity. By extracting the PEC as a classifier to classify the BS and MD States, the accuracy could reach more than 70%. Therefore, this method can not only reflect the mechanism of cortical activity alterations induced by anesthetics, but also provide a new idea for monitoring the depth of anesthesia in the future. Clinical Relevance - This shows that the high-density EEG of scalp level can be converted into cortical signals by source estimation, which is similar to the neuroimaging method of directly measuring cortical activity.

M/EEG Dynamics Underlying Reserve, Resilience, and Maintenance in Aging: A Review

Cognitive reserve and resilience refer to the set of processes allowing the preservation of cognitive performance in the presence of structural and functional brain changes. Investigations of these concepts have provided unique insights into the heterogeneity of cognitive and brain changes associated with aging. Previous work mainly relied on methods benefiting from a high spatial precision but a low temporal resolution, and thus the temporal brain dynamics underlying these concepts remains poorly known. Moreover, while spontaneous fluctuations of neural activity have long been considered as noise, recent work highlights its critical contribution to brain functions. In this study, we synthesized the current state of knowledge from magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) studies that investigated the contribution of maintenance of neural synchrony, and variability of brain dynamics, to cognitive changes associated with healthy aging and the progression of neurodegenerative disease (such as Alzheimer's disease). The reviewed findings highlight that compensations could be associated with increased synchrony of higher (>10 Hz) frequency bands. Maintenance of young-like synchrony patterns was also observed in healthy older individuals. Both maintenance and compensation appear to be highly related to preserved structural integrity (brain reserve). However, increased synchrony was also found to be deleterious in some cases and reflects neurodegenerative processes. These results provide major elements on the stability or variability of functional networks as well as maintenance of neural synchrony over time, and their association with individual cognitive changes with aging. These findings could provide new and interesting considerations about cognitive reserve, maintenance, and resilience of brain functions and cognition.

Frontal-occipital network alterations while viewing 2D & 3D movies: a source-level EEG and graph theory approach

Many researchers have measured the differences in electroencephalography (EEG) while viewing 2D and 3D movies to uncover the neuromechanism underlying distinct viewing experiences. Using whole-brain network analyses of scalp EEG, our previous study reported that beta and gamma bands presented higher global efficiencies while viewing 3D movies. However, scalp EEG is influenced by volume conduction, not allowing inference from a neuroanatomy perspective; thus, source reconstruction techniques are recommended. This paper is the first to measure the differences in the frontal-occipital networks in EEG source space during 2D and 3D movie viewing. EEG recordings from 40 subjects were performed during 2D and 3D movie viewing. We constructed frontal-occipital networks of alpha, beta, and gamma bands in EEG source space and analyzed network efficiencies. We found that the beta band exhibited higher global efficiency in 3D movie viewing than in 2D movie viewing; however, the alpha global efficiency was not statistically significant. In addition, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, taking functional connectivities as classification features, was built to identify whether the frontal-occipital networks contain patterns that could distinguish 2D and 3D movie viewing. Using the 6 most important functional connectivity features of the beta band, we obtained the best accuracy of 0.933. Our findings shed light on uncovering the neuromechanism underlying distinct experiences while viewing 2D and 3D movies.

Power shift and connectivity changes in healthy aging during resting-state EEG

The neural activity of human brain changes in healthy individuals during aging. The most frequent variation in patterns of neural activity are a shift from posterior to anterior areas and a reduced asymmetry between hemispheres. These patterns are typically observed during task execution and by using functional magnetic resonance imaging data. In the present study we investigated whether analogous effects can also be detected during rest and by means of source-space time series reconstructed from electroencephalographic recordings. By analyzing oscillatory power distribution across the brain we indeed found a shift from posterior to anterior areas in older adults. We additionally examined this shift by evaluating connectivity and its changes with age. The findings indicated that inter-area connections among frontal, parietal and temporal areas were strengthened in older individuals. A more complex pattern was shown in intra-area connections, where age-related activity was enhanced in parietal and temporal areas, and reduced in frontal areas. Finally, the resulting network exhibits a loss of modularity with age. Overall, the results extend to resting-state condition the evidence of an age-related shift of brain activity from posterior to anterior areas, thus suggesting that this shift is a general feature of the aging brain rather than being task-specific. In addition, the connectivity results provide new information on the reorganization of resting-state brain activity in aging.

Measuring Spinal Cord Potentials and Cortico-Spinal Interactions After Wrist Movements Induced by Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Electroencephalographic (EEG) correlates of movement have been studied extensively over many years. In the present work, we focus on investigating neural correlates that originate from the spine and study their connectivity to corresponding signals from the sensorimotor cortex using multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) models. To study cortico-spinal interactions, we simultaneously measured spinal cord potentials (SCPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) of wrist movements elicited by neuromuscular electrical stimulation. We identified directional connections between spine and cortex during both the extension and flexion of the wrist using only non-invasive recording techniques. Our connectivity estimation results are in alignment with various studies investigating correlates of movement, i.e., we found the contralateral side of the sensorimotor cortex to be the main sink of information as well as the spine to be the main source of it. Both types of movement could also be clearly identified in the time-domain signals.

A survey of brain network analysis by electroencephalographic signals

Brain network analysis is one efficient tool in exploring human brain diseases and can differentiate the alterations from comparative networks. The alterations account for time, mental states, tasks, individuals, and so forth. Furthermore, the changes determine the segregation and integration of functional networks that lead to network reorganization (or reconfiguration) to extend the neuroplasticity of the brain. Exploring related brain networks should be of interest that may provide roadmaps for brain research and clinical diagnosis. Recent electroencephalogram (EEG) studies have revealed the secrets of the brain networks and diseases (or disorders) within and between subjects and have provided instructive and promising suggestions and methods. This review summarized the corresponding algorithms that had been used to construct functional or effective networks on the scalp and cerebral cortex. We reviewed EEG network analysis that unveils more cognitive functions and neural disorders of the human and then explored the relationship between brain science and artificial intelligence which may fuel each other to accelerate their advances, and also discussed some innovations and future challenges in the end.

Deep Transfer Learning for Parkinson’s Disease Monitoring by Image-Based Representation of Resting-State EEG Using Directional Connectivity

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by abnormal brain oscillations that can change rapidly. Tracking neural alternations with high temporal resolution electrophysiological monitoring methods such as EEG can lead to valuable information about alterations observed in PD. Concomitantly, there have been advances in the high-accuracy performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) using few-patient data. In this study, we propose a method to transform resting-state EEG data into a deep latent space to classify PD subjects from healthy cases. We first used a general orthogonalized directed coherence (gOPDC) method to compute directional connectivity (DC) between all pairwise EEG channels in four frequency bands (Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma) and then converted the DC maps into 2D images. We then used the VGG-16 architecture (trained on the ImageNet dataset) as our pre-trained model, enlisted weights of convolutional layers as initial weights, and fine-tuned all layer weights with our data. After training, the classification achieved 99.62% accuracy, 100% precision, 99.17% recall, 0.9958 F1 score, and 0.9958 AUC averaged for 10 random repetitions of training/evaluating on the proposed deep transfer learning (DTL) network. Using the latent features learned by the network and employing LASSO regression, we found that latent features (as opposed to the raw DC values) were significantly correlated with five clinical indices routinely measured: left and right finger tapping, left and right tremor, and body bradykinesia. Our results demonstrate the power of transfer learning and latent space derivation for the development of oscillatory biomarkers in PD.

Search for schizophrenia and bipolar biotypes using functional network properties

INTRODUCTION

Recent studies support the identification of valid subtypes within schizophrenia and bipolar disorder using cluster analysis. Our aim was to identify meaningful biotypes of psychosis based on network properties of the electroencephalogram. We hypothesized that these parameters would be more altered in a subgroup of patients also characterized by more severe deficits in other clinical, cognitive, and biological measurements.

METHODS

A clustering analysis was performed using the electroencephalogram-based network parameters derived from graph-theory obtained during a P300 task of 137 schizophrenia (of them, 35 first episodes) and 46 bipolar patients. Both prestimulus and modulation of the electroencephalogram were included in the analysis. Demographic, clinical, cognitive, structural cerebral data, and the modulation of the spectral entropy of the electroencephalogram were compared between clusters. Data from 158 healthy controls were included for further comparisons.

RESULTS

We identified two clusters of patients. One cluster presented higher prestimulus connectivity strength, clustering coefficient, path-length, and lower small-world index compared to controls. The modulation of clustering coefficient and path-length parameters was smaller in the former cluster, which also showed an altered structural connectivity network and a widespread cortical thinning. The other cluster of patients did not show significant differences with controls in the functional network properties. No significant differences were found between patients´ clusters in first episodes and bipolar proportions, symptoms scores, cognitive performance, or spectral entropy modulation.

CONCLUSION

These data support the existence of a subgroup within psychosis with altered global properties of functional and structural connectivity.

Grounding Adaptive Cognitive Control in the Intrinsic, Functional Brain Organization: An HD-EEG Resting State Investigation

In a recent study, we used the dynamic temporal prediction (DTP) task to demonstrate that the capability to implicitly adapt motor control as a function of task demand is grounded in at least three dissociable neurofunctional mechanisms: expectancy implementation, expectancy violation and response implementation, which are supported by as many distinct cortical networks. In this study, we further investigated if this ability can be predicted by the individual brain's functional organization at rest. To this purpose, we recorded resting-state, high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) in healthy volunteers before performing the DTP task. This allowed us to obtain source-reconstructed cortical activity and compute whole-brain resting state functional connectivity at the source level. We then extracted phase locking values from the parceled cortex based on the Destrieux atlas to estimate individual functional connectivity at rest in the three task-related networks. Furthermore, we applied a machine-learning approach (i.e., support vector regression) and were able to predict both behavioral (response speed and accuracy adaptation) and neural (ERP modulation) task-dependent outcome. Finally, by exploiting graph theory nodal measures (i.e., degree, strength, local efficiency and clustering coefficient), we characterized the contribution of each node to the task-related neural and behavioral effects. These results show that the brain's intrinsic functional organization can be potentially used as a predictor of the system capability to adjust motor control in a flexible and implicit way. Additionally, our findings support the theoretical framework in which cognitive control is conceived as an emergent property rooted in bottom-up associative learning processes.

EEG-connectivity: A fundamental guide and checklist for optimal study design and evaluation

Brain connectivity can be estimated through many analyses applied to electroencephalographic (EEG) data. However, substantial heterogeneity in the implementation of connectivity methods exist. Heterogeneity in conceptualization of connectivity measures, data collection, or data pre-processing may be associated with variability in robustness of measurement. While it is difficult to compare the results of studies using different EEG connectivity measures, standardization of processing and reporting may facilitate the task. We discuss how factors such as referencing, epoch length and number, controls for volume conduction, artefact removal, and statistical control of multiple comparisons influence the EEG connectivity estimate for connectivity measures, and what can be done to control for potential confounds associated with these factors. Based on the results reported in previous literature, this article presents recommendations and a novel checklist developed for quality assessment of EEG connectivity studies. This checklist and its recommendations are made in an effort to draw attention to factors that may influence connectivity estimates and factors that need to be improved in future research. Standardization of procedures and reporting in EEG connectivity may lead to EEG connectivity studies to be made more synthesisable and comparable despite variations in the methodology underlying connectivity estimates.

Electrophysiological underpinnings of reward processing: Are we exploiting the full potential of EEG?

Understanding how the brain processes reward is an important and complex endeavor, which has involved the use of a range of complementary neuroimaging tools, including electroencephalography (EEG). EEG has been praised for its high temporal resolution but, because the signal recorded at the scalp is a mixture of brain activities, it is often considered to have poor spatial resolution. Besides, EEG data analysis has most often relied on event-related potentials (ERPs) which cancel out non-phase locked oscillatory activity, thus limiting the functional discriminative power of EEG attainable through spectral analyses. Because these three dimensions -temporal, spatial and spectral- have been unequally leveraged in reward studies, we argue that the full potential of EEG has not been exploited. To back up our claim, we first performed a systematic survey of EEG studies assessing reward processing. Specifically, we report on the nature of the cognitive processes investigated (i.e., reward anticipation or reward outcome processing) and the methods used to collect and process the EEG data (i.e., event-related potential, time-frequency or source analyses). A total of 359 studies involving healthy subjects and the delivery of monetary rewards were surveyed. We show that reward anticipation has been overlooked (88% of studies investigated reward outcome processing, while only 24% investigated reward anticipation), and that time-frequency and source analyses (respectively reported by 19% and 12% of the studies) have not been widely adopted by the field yet, with ERPs still being the dominant methodology (92% of the studies). We argue that this focus on feedback-related ERPs provides a biased perspective on reward processing, by ignoring reward anticipation processes as well as a large part of the information contained in the EEG signal. Finally, we illustrate with selected examples how addressing these issues could benefit the field, relying on approaches combining time-frequency analyses, blind source separation and source localization.

Widespread theta coherence during spatial cognitive control

Cognitive control allows humans to process relevant sensory information while minimizing distractions from irrelevant stimuli. The neural basis of cognitive control is known to involve frontal regions of the brain such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), but the temporal dynamics of larger scale networks is unclear. Here we used EEG with source localization to identify how the neural oscillations localized to the mPFC and ACC coordinate with parietal, sensory, and motor areas during spatial cognitive control. Theta coherence (3-8 Hz) between the mPFC and ACC increased with task difficulty and predicted individual differences in reaction time. Individual differences in accuracy were predicted by earlier activation of ACC-motor coherence, highlighting the relationship between processing speed and task performance. Our results provide evidence that successful cognitive control requires dynamic coordination between a widespread network of brain regions. Long range theta coherence may be a key mechanism for efficient cognitive control across the neocortex.

Connectivity Measures Differentiate Cortical and Subcortical Sub-Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients

Brain lesions caused by cerebral ischemia lead to network disturbances in both hemispheres, causing a subsequent reorganization of functional connectivity both locally and remotely with respect to the injury. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) methods have long been used for exploring brain electrical activity and functional connectivity modifications after stroke. However, results obtained so far are not univocal. Here, we used basic and advanced EEG methods to characterize how brain activity and functional connectivity change after stroke. Thirty-three unilateral post stroke patients in the sub-acute phase and ten neurologically intact age-matched right-handed subjects were enrolled. Patients were subdivided into two groups based on lesion location: cortico-subcortical (CS, n = 18) and subcortical (S, n = 15), respectively. Stroke patients were evaluated in the period ranging from 45 days since the acute event (T0) up to 3 months after stroke (T1) with both neurophysiological (resting state EEG) and clinical assessment (Barthel Index, BI) measures, while healthy subjects were evaluated once. Brain power at T0 was similar between the two groups of patients in all frequency bands considered (δ, θ, α, and β). However, evolution of θ-band power over time was different, with a normalization only in the CS group. Instead, average connectivity and specific network measures (Integration, Segregation, and Small-worldness) in the β-band at T0 were significantly different between the two groups. The connectivity and network measures at T0 also appear to have a predictive role in functional recovery (BI T1-T0), again group-dependent. The results obtained in this study showed that connectivity measures and correlations between EEG features and recovery depend on lesion location. These data, if confirmed in further studies, on the one hand could explain the heterogeneity of results so far observed in previous studies, on the other hand they could be used by researchers as biomarkers predicting spontaneous recovery, to select homogenous groups of patients for the inclusion in clinical trials.

The organization of functional neurocognitive networks in focal epilepsy correlates with domain-specific cognitive performance

Understanding and diagnosing cognitive impairment in epilepsy remains a prominent challenge. New etiological models suggest that cognitive difficulties might not be directly linked to seizure activity, but are rather a manifestation of a broader brain pathology. Consequently, treating seizures is not sufficient to alleviate cognitive symptoms, highlighting the need for novel diagnostic tools. Here, we investigated whether the organization of three intrinsic, resting-state functional connectivity networks was correlated with domain-specific cognitive test performance. Using individualized EEG source reconstruction and graph theory, we examined the association between network small worldness and cognitive test performance in 23 patients with focal epilepsy and 17 healthy controls, who underwent a series of standardized pencil-and-paper and digital cognitive tests. We observed that the specific networks robustly correlated with test performance in distinct cognitive domains. Specifically, correlations were evident between the default mode network and memory in patients, the central-executive network and executive functioning in controls, and the salience network and social cognition in both groups. Interestingly, the correlations were evident in both groups, but in different domains, suggesting an alteration in these functional neurocognitive networks in focal epilepsy. The present findings highlight the potential clinical relevance of functional brain network dysfunction in cognitive impairment.

When the time is right: Temporal dynamics of brain activity in healthy aging and dementia

Brain activity and communications are complex phenomena that dynamically unfold over time. However, in contrast with the large number of studies reporting neuroanatomical differences in activation relative to young adults, changes of temporal dynamics of neural activity during normal and pathological aging have been grossly understudied and are still poorly known. Here, we synthesize the current state of knowledge from MEG and EEG studies that aimed at specifying the effects of healthy and pathological aging on local and network dynamics, and discuss the clinical and theoretical implications of these findings. We argue that considering the temporal dynamics of brain activations and networks could provide a better understanding of changes associated with healthy aging, and the progression of neurodegenerative disease. Recent research has also begun to shed light on the association of these dynamics with other imaging modalities and with individual differences in cognitive performance. These insights hold great potential for driving new theoretical frameworks and development of biomarkers to aid in identifying and treating age-related cognitive changes.

Source-level EEG and graph theory reveal widespread functional network alterations in focal epilepsy

OBJECTIVE

The hypersynchronous neuronal activity associated with epilepsy causes widespread functional network disruptions extending beyond the epileptogenic zone. This altered network topology is considered a mediator for non-seizure symptoms, such as cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to investigate functional network alterations in focal epilepsy patients with good seizure control and high quality of life.

METHODS

We compared twenty-two focal epilepsy patients and sixteen healthy controls on graph metrics derived from functional connectivity of source-level resting-state EEG. Graph metrics were calculated over a range of network densities in five frequency bands.

RESULTS

We observed a significantly increased small world index in patients relative to controls. On the local level, two left-hemisphere regions displayed a shift towards greater alpha band "hubness". The findings were not mediated by age, sex or education, nor by age of epilepsy onset, duration or focus lateralisation.

CONCLUSIONS

Widespread functional network alterations are evident in focal epilepsy, even in a cohort characterised by successful anti-seizure medication therapy and high quality of life. These findings might support the position that functional network analysis could hold clinical relevance for epilepsy.

SIGNIFICANCE

Focal epilepsy is accompanied by global and local functional network aberrancies which might be implied in the sustenance of non-seizure symptoms.

Analyzing the Loss and the Recovery of Consciousness: Functional Connectivity Patterns and Changes in Heart Rate Variability During Propofol-Induced Anesthesia

The analysis of the central and the autonomic nervous systems (CNS, ANS) activities during general anesthesia (GA) provides fundamental information for the study of neural processes that support alterations of the consciousness level. In the present pilot study, we analyzed EEG signals and the heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) in a sample of 11 patients undergoing spinal surgery to investigate their CNS and ANS activities during GA obtained with propofol administration. Data were analyzed during different stages of GA: baseline, the first period of anesthetic induction, the period before the loss of consciousness, the first period after propofol discontinuation, and the period before the recovery of consciousness (ROC). In EEG spectral analysis, we found a decrease in posterior alpha and beta power in all cortical areas observed, except the occipital ones, and an increase in delta power, mainly during the induction phase. In EEG connectivity analysis, we found a significant increase of local efficiency index in alpha and delta bands between baseline and loss of consciousness as well as between baseline and ROC in delta band only and a significant reduction of the characteristic path length in alpha band between the baseline and ROC. Moreover, connectivity results showed that in the alpha band there was mainly a progressive increase in the number and in the strength of incoming connections in the frontal region, while in the beta band the parietal region showed mainly a significant increase in the number and in the strength of outcoming connections values. The HRV analysis showed that the induction of anesthesia with propofol was associated with a progressive decrease in complexity and a consequent increase in the regularity indexes and that the anesthetic procedure determined bradycardia which was accompanied by an increase in cardiac sympathetic modulation and a decrease in cardiac parasympathetic modulation during the induction. Overall, the results of this pilot study showed as propofol-induced anesthesia caused modifications on EEG signal, leading to a "rebalance" between long and short-range cortical connections, and had a direct effect on the cardiac system. Our data suggest interesting perspectives for the interactions between the central and autonomic nervous systems for the modulation of the consciousness level.

Identification of psychiatric disorder subtypes from functional connectivity patterns in resting-state electroencephalography

The understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders, which are known to be neurobiologically and clinically heterogeneous, could benefit from the data-driven identification of disease subtypes. Here, we report the identification of two clinically relevant subtypes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) on the basis of robust and distinct functional connectivity patterns, prominently within the frontoparietal control network and the default mode network. We identified the disease subtypes by analysing, via unsupervised and supervised machine learning, the power-envelope-based connectivity of signals reconstructed from high-density resting-state electroencephalography in four datasets of patients with PTSD and MDD, and show that the subtypes are transferable across independent datasets recorded under different conditions. The subtype whose functional connectivity differed most from those of healthy controls was less responsive to psychotherapy treatment for PTSD and failed to respond to an antidepressant medication for MDD. By contrast, both subtypes responded equally well to two different forms of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy for MDD. Our data-driven approach may constitute a generalizable solution for connectome-based diagnosis.

Frequency-specific network effective connectivity: ERP analysis of recognition memory process by directed connectivity estimators

Human memory retrieval is one of the brain's most important, and least understood cognitive mechanisms. Traditionally, research on this aspect of memory has focused on the contributions of particular brain regions to recognition responses, but the interaction between regions may be of even greater importance to a full understanding. In this study, we examined patterns of network connectivity during retrieval in a recognition memory task. We estimated connectivity between brain regions from electroencephalographic signals recorded from twenty healthy subjects. A multivariate autoregressive model (MVAR) was used to determine the Granger causality to estimate the effective connectivity in the time-frequency domain. We used GPDC and dDTF methods because they have almost resolved the previous volume conduction and bivariate problems faced by previous estimation methods. Results show enhanced global connectivity in the theta and gamma bands on target trials relative to lure trials. Connectivity within and between the brain's hemispheres may be related to correct rejection. The left frontal signature appears to have a crucial role in recollection. Theta- and gamma-specific connectivity patterns between temporal, parietal, and frontal cortex may disclose the retrieval mechanism. Old/new comparison resulted in different patterns of network connection. These results and other evidence emphasize the role of frequency-specific causal network interactions in the memory retrieval process. Comparison of Causality Network Estimation in the Sensor and Source Space: Simulation and Application on EEG

The usage of methods for the estimation of the true underlying connectivity among the observed variables of a system is increasing, especially in the domain of neuroscience. Granger causality and similar concepts are employed for the estimation of the brain network from electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Also source localization techniques, such as the standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA), are widely used for obtaining more reliable data in the source space. In this work, connectivity structures are estimated in the sensor and in the source space making use of the sLORETA transformation for simulated and for EEG data with episodes of spontaneous epileptiform discharges (ED). From the comparative simulation study on high-dimensional coupled stochastic and deterministic systems originating in the sensor space, we conclude that the structure of the estimated causality networks differs in the sensor space and in the source space. Moreover, different network types, such as random, small-world and scale-free, can be better discriminated on the basis of the data in the original sensor space than on the transformed data in the source space. Similarly, in EEG epochs containing epileptiform discharges, the discriminative ability of network topological indices was significantly better in the sensor compared to the source level. In conclusion, causality networks constructed at the sensor and source level, for both simulated and empirical data, exhibit significant structural differences. These observations indicate that further studies are warranted in order to clarify the exact relationship between data registered in the sensor and source space.

Validation of a new approach for distinguishing anesthetized from awake state in patients using directed transfer function applied to raw EEG

We test whether a measure based on the directed transfer function (DTF) calculated from short segments of electroencephalography (EEG) time-series can be used to monitor the state of the patients also during sevoflurane anesthesia as it can for patients undergoing propofol anesthesia. We collected and analyzed 25-channel EEG from 7 patients (3 females, ages 41–56 years) undergoing surgical anesthesia with sevoflurane, and quantified the sensor space directed connectivity for every 1-s epoch using DTF. The resulting connectivity parameters were compared to corresponding parameters from our previous study (n = 8, patients anesthetized with propofol and remifentanil, but otherwise using a similar protocol). Statistical comparisons between and within studies were done using permutation statistics, a data driven algorithm based on the DTF-parameters was employed to classify the epochs as coming from awake or anesthetized state. According to results of the permutation tests, DTF-parameter topographies were significantly different between the awake and anesthesia state at the group level. However, the topographies were not significantly different when comparing results computed from sevoflurane and propofol data, neither in the awake nor in anesthetized state. Optimizing the algorithm for simultaneously having high sensitivity and specificity in classification yielded an accuracy of 95.1% (SE = 0.96%), with sensitivity of 98.4% (SE = 0.80%) and specificity of 94.8% (SE = 0.10%). These findings indicate that the DTF changes in a similar manner when humans undergo general anesthesia caused by two distinct anesthetic agents with different molecular mechanisms of action.

A Framework to Assess the Information Dynamics of Source EEG Activity and Its Application to Epileptic Brain Networks

This study introduces a framework for the information-theoretic analysis of brain functional connectivity performed at the level of electroencephalogram (EEG) sources. The framework combines the use of common spatial patterns to select the EEG components which maximize the variance between two experimental conditions, simultaneous implementation of vector autoregressive modeling (VAR) with independent component analysis to describe the joint source dynamics and their projection to the scalp, and computation of information dynamics measures (information storage, information transfer, statistically significant network links) from the source VAR parameters. The proposed framework was tested on simulated EEGs obtained mixing source signals generated under different coupling conditions, showing its ability to retrieve source information dynamics from the scalp signals. Then, it was applied to investigate scalp and source brain connectivity in a group of children manifesting episodes of focal and generalized epilepsy; the analysis was performed on EEG signals lasting 5 s, collected in two consecutive windows preceding and one window following each ictal episode. Our results show that generalized seizures are associated with a significant decrease from pre-ictal to post-ictal periods of the information stored in the signals and of the information transferred among them, reflecting reduced self-predictability and causal connectivity at the level of both scalp and source brain dynamics. On the contrary, in the case of focal seizures the scalp EEG activity was not discriminated across conditions by any information measure, while source analysis revealed a tendency of the measures of information transfer to increase just before seizures and to decrease just after seizures. These results suggest that focal epileptic seizures are associated with a reorganization of the topology of EEG brain networks which is only visible analyzing connectivity among the brain sources. Our findings emphasize the importance of EEG modeling approaches able to deal with the adverse effects of volume conduction on brain connectivity analysis, and their potential relevance to the development of strategies for prediction and clinical treatment of epilepsy.

Nested oscillations and brain connectivity during sequential stages of feature-based attention

Brain mechanisms of visual selective attention involve both local and network-level activity changes at specific oscillatory rhythms, but their interplay remains poorly explored. Here, we investigate anticipatory and reactive effects of feature-based attention using separate fMRI and EEG recordings, while participants attended to one of two spatially overlapping visual features (motion and orientation). We focused on EEG source analysis of local neuronal rhythms and nested oscillations and on graph analysis of connectivity changes in a network of fMRI-defined regions of interest, and characterized a cascade of attentional effects at multiple spatial scales. We discuss how the results may reconcile several theories of selective attention, by showing how β rhythms support anticipatory information routing through increased network efficiency, while reactive α-band desynchronization patterns and increased α-γ coupling in task-specific sensory areas mediate stimulus-evoked processing of task-relevant signals.

Functional connectivity of major depression disorder using ongoing EEG during music perception

OBJECTIVE

The functional connectivity (FC) of major depression disorder (MDD) has not been well studied under naturalistic and continuous stimuli conditions. In this study, we investigated the frequency-specific FC of MDD patients exposed to conditions of music perception using ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG).

METHODS

First, we applied the phase lag index (PLI) method to calculate the connectivity matrices and graph theory-based methods to measure the topology of brain networks across different frequency bands. Then, classification methods were adopted to identify the most discriminate frequency band for the diagnosis of MDD.

RESULTS

During music perception, MDD patients exhibited a decreased connectivity pattern in the delta band but an increased connectivity pattern in the beta band. Healthy people showed a left hemisphere-dominant phenomenon, but MDD patients did not show such a lateralized effect. Support vector machine (SVM) achieved the best classification performance in the beta frequency band with an accuracy of 89.7%, sensitivity of 89.4% and specificity of 89.9%.

CONCLUSIONS

MDD patients exhibited an altered FC in delta and beta bands, and the beta band showed a superiority in the diagnosis of MDD.

SIGNIFICANCE

Our study provided a promising reference for the diagnosis of MDD, and revealed a new perspective for understanding the topology of MDD brain networks during music perception.

Changes of Effective Connectivity in the Alpha Band Characterize Differential Processing of Audiovisual Information in Cross-Modal Selective Attention

Cross-modal selective attention enhances the processing of sensory inputs that are most relevant to the task at hand. Such differential processing could be mediated by a swift network reconfiguration on the macroscopic level, but this remains a poorly understood process. To tackle this issue, we used a behavioral paradigm to introduce a shift of selective attention between the visual and auditory domains, and recorded scalp electroencephalographic signals from eight healthy participants. The changes in effective connectivity caused by the cross-modal attentional shift were delineated by analyzing spectral Granger Causality (GC), a metric of frequency-specific effective connectivity. Using data-driven methods of pattern-classification and feature-analysis, we found that a change in the α band (12 Hz-15 Hz) of GC is a stable feature across different individuals that can be used to decode the attentional shift. Specifically, auditory attention induces more pronounced information flow in the α band, especially from the parietal-occipital areas to the temporal-parietal areas, compared to the case of visual attention, reflecting a reconfiguration of interaction in the macroscopic brain network accompanying different processing. Our results support the role of α oscillation in organizing the information flow across spatially-separated brain areas and, thereby, mediating cross-modal selective attention.

Applied potential of task-free event-related paradigms for assessing neurocognitive functions in disorders of consciousness

Diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness is immensely difficult and often results in misdiagnoses, which can have fatal consequences. Despite the severity of this well-known issue, a reliable assessment tool has not yet been developed and implemented in the clinic. The main aim of this focused review is to evaluate the various event-related potential paradigms, recorded using EEG, which may be used to improve the assessment of patients with disorders of consciousness; we also provide a brief comparison of these paradigms with other measures. Notably, most event-related potential studies on the topic have focused on testing a small set of components, or even just a single component. However, to be of practical use, we argue that an assessment should probe a range of cognitive and linguistic functions at once. We suggest a novel approach that combines a set of well-tested auditory event-related potential components: N100, mismatch negativity, P3a, N400, early left anterior negativity and lexical response enhancement. Combining these components in a single, task-free design will provide a multidimensional assessment of cognitive and linguistic processes, which may help physicians make a more precise diagnosis.

Increases in theta CSD power and coherence during a calibrated stop-signal task: implications for goal-conflict processing and the Behavioural Inhibition System

Psychologists have identified multiple different forms of conflict, such as information processing conflict and goal conflict. As such, there is a need to examine the similarities and differences in neurology between each form of conflict. To address this, we conducted a comprehensive electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis of Shadli, Glue, McIntosh, and McNaughton’s calibrated stop-signal task (SST) goal-conflict task. Specifically, we examined changes in scalp-wide current source density (CSD) power and coherence across a wide range of frequency bands during the calibrated SST (n = 34). We assessed differences in EEG between the high and low goal-conflict conditions using hierarchical analyses of variance (ANOVAs). We also related goal-conflict EEG to trait anxiety, neuroticism, Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS)-anxiety and revised BIS (rBIS) using regression analyses. We found that changes in CSD power during goal conflict were limited to increased midfrontocentral theta. Conversely, coherence increased across 23 scalp-wide theta region pairs and one frontal delta region pair. Finally, scalp-wide theta significantly predicted trait neuroticism but not trait anxiety, BIS-anxiety or rBIS. We conclude that goal conflict involves increased midfrontocentral CSD theta power and scalp-wide theta-dominated coherence. Therefore, compared with information processing conflict, goal conflict displays a similar EEG power profile of midfrontocentral theta but a much wider coherence profile. Furthermore, the increases in theta during goal conflict are the characteristic of BIS-driven activity. Therefore, future research should confirm whether these goal-conflict effects are driven by the BIS by examining whether the effects are attenuated by anxiolytic drugs. Overall, we have identified a unique network of goal-conflict EEG during the calibrated SST.

Ld-EEG Effective Brain Connectivity in Patients With Cheyne-Stokes Respiration

The characterization of brain cortical activity in heart-failure patients affected by Cheyne-Stokes Respiration might provide relevant information about the mechanism underlying this pathology. Central autonomic network is gaining increasing attention for its role in the regulation of breathing and cardiac functions. In this scenario, evaluating changes in cortical connectivity associated with Cheyne-Stokes Respiration may be of interest in the study of specific brain-activity related to such disease. Nonetheless, the inter subject variability, the temporal dynamics of Central-Apnea/Hyperpnea cycles and the limitations of clinical setups lead to different methodological challenges. To this aim, we present a framework for the assessment of cortico-cortical interactions from Electroencephalographic signals acquired using low-density caps and block-design paradigms, arising from endogenous triggers. The framework combines ICA-decomposition, unsupervised clustering, MVAR modelling and a permutation-bootstrap strategy for evaluating significant connectivity differences between conditions. A common network, lateralized towards the left hemisphere, was depicted across 8 patients exhibiting Cheyne-Stokes Respiration patterns during acquisitions. Significant differences in connectivity at the group level were observed based on patients' ventilatory condition. Interactions were significantly higher during hyperpnea periods with respect to central apneas and occurred mainly in the delta band. Opposite-sign differences were observed for higher frequencies (i.e. beta, low-gamma).
