Abstract
This study investigates the impact of Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria (ZSB) and their consortia on key physiological and biochemical in two rice varieties, PD 26 and NDR 359, over two consecutive growing seasons (2022 and 2023). Unlike individual bacterial strains, microbial consortia harness the synergistic interactions between multiple species, leading to enhanced zinc solubilization efficiency and improved plant responses. The application of consortia significantly boosted the activities of zinc-dependent enzymes, including carbonic anhydrase (CA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). It also significantly improved gaseous exchange parameters, including stomatal conductance, internal CO2 concentration, photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate. Maximum CA activity in both the varieties was recorded with Consortium1 (T4) and Consortium2 (T5), resulting in an increase of up to 44.60 % and 29.88 % in PD 26 and NDR 359 respectively. Similarly, SOD activity increased by up to 65.11 % in PD 26 and 39.99 % in NDR 359. ZSB consortia treatments also enhanced stomatal conductance by up to 61.92 %, with a significant increase in internal CO2 concentration, photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate. Additionally, ZSB positively influenced leaf zinc content and grain yield, with the maximum yield observed with Consortium2 (T5). Regression analysis showed a significant positive correlation between leaf zinc content and CA, SOD activities as well as with photosynthetic rate (R2 = 0.64 to 0.95). Principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted the superior performance of consortia treatments in modulating physiological traits, underscoring their potential as sustainable biofortification agents. These findings demonstrate that ZSB consortia outperform individual strains by leveraging multi-strain synergies, leading to enhanced zinc bioavailability and crop productivity.

Abstract
Finger millet (Eleusine coracana subsp. coracana) (2n = 4x = 36) remains one of the most important millets in East Africa (EA), where it was most likely domesticated along the highlands of Ethiopia and Uganda. The goal of the current study was to understand the population structure of the Ethiopian finger millet landraces and identify quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) and haplotypes associated with agronomic and nutritional traits. In a field evaluation across three environments, 448 genotypes were assessed for days to flowering (DTF), days to maturity (DTM), thousand seed weight (TSW), grain yield (GY), stay-green score (STG), and drought score (DrtSc). The harvested grain was analyzed for Fe and Zn contents. A subset of 391 genotypes was skim-sequenced, generating 24,112 high-quality SNPs that were employed for population structure, association mapping, and haplotype analysis. Seventy marker-trait associations were detected including 15 major QTNs with more than 30% phenotypic variance explained (PVE) for all traits except STG and GY. Pleiotropic major QTNs were identified for DTM/DTF and Fe/Zn on chromosomes 9B and 2B, respectively. Haplotype analysis of major QTNs identified 54 significant haplotype blocks and 2 additional haplotypes for a multidrug ABC transporter gene family like protein on chromosome 4A that was associated with PTH. Favorable haplotypes from pleiotropic DTM/DTF and Fe/Zn QTNs were present in 13 and 12 genotypes respectively, majority from Tigray region. Two genotypes from Tigray and one from Amhara harbored favorable haplotypes for DTM/DTF and Fe/Zn. These findings provide invaluable insights for targeted breeding to enhance finger millet resilience, nutritional profile, and yield.

Abstract
Finger millet (Eleusine coracana Gaertn L.) is an underutilized but nutritionally rich climate resilient food crop that is generally cultivated on marginal lands. Soil salinization is a major abiotic stress that leads to a reduction in growth and yield by affecting various physiological and metabolic processes in plants. The existence of genotypic variation for salt tolerance in finger millet indicates the possibility of crop improvement via plant breeding. The overall objective of the study was to identify metabolic changes associated with improved salt tolerance in finger millet. Understanding tolerance mechanisms plays a pivotal role in the development of elite cultivars. Based on the consensus of several phenotypic data at the germination and seedling stages, we further evaluated two accessions (IE 518 and IE 405) with morphophysiological parameters and metabolomics to dissect the salinity tolerance mechanisms in finger millet. Significant phenotypic separation of IE 518 and IE 405 for salt tolerance was reflected through differences in several physiological processes such as maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM), net photosynthesis rate (Pn), shoot Na+ ion accumulation, and oxidative stresses (electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde content). However, both accessions showed retention of K+ ions, which underscores the role of ion homeostasis in finger millet. Pathway enrichment analysis with the uniquely salt regulated metabolites identified key metabolic pathways such as stress signaling, biotin metabolism, energy metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, and sugar metabolism in IE 518. An enhanced accumulation of reducing sugars (mannose and melibiose) and amino acids (L-Proline and GABA) in IE 518 under salinity suggests maintaining osmotic balance as a key tolerance mechanism in finger millet.

Abstract
Our current agricultural system faces a perfect storm-climate change, a burgeoning population, and unpredictable outbreaks such as COVID-19 which disrupt food production, particularly for vulnerable populations in developing countries. A paradigm shift in agriculture practices is needed to tackle these issues. One solution is the diversification of crop production. While ~56% of the plant-based protein stems from three major cereal crops (rice, wheat, and maize), underutilized crops such as millets, legumes, and other cereals are highly neglected by farmers and the research community. Millets are one of the most ancient and versatile orphan crops with attributes such as fast growing, high yielding, withstanding harsh environments, and rich in micronutrients such as iron and zinc, making them appealing to achieve agronomic sustainability. Here, we highlight the contribution of millet to agriculture and focus on the genetic diversity of millet, genomic resources, and next-generation omics and their applications under various stress conditions. Additionally, integrative omics technologies could identify and develop millets with desirable phenotypes having high agronomic value and mitigating climate change. We emphasize that biotechnological interventions, such as genome-wide association, genomic selection, genome editing, and artificial intelligence/machine learning, can improve and breed millets more effectively.

Abstract
Africa is a continent where undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies are common and malnutrition is a major problem. Genetic biofortification (GB) offers a promising way to combat malnutrition. But little is still known about how widely used GB is in Africa today. This review explores the status, achievements, and challenges of GB on the continent today. It draws attention to the potential for enhanced nutritional results from biofortified crops that are enhanced with vital elements like zinc, iron, and vitamin A. Biofortification has a demonstrable positive effect on health and wellness, as evidenced by success stories from several African nations. However, obstacles like a lack of farmer awareness, difficulty obtaining biofortified seeds, and complicated regulations make adoption difficult. Research and collaboration advances hold the potential for increasing GB's effectiveness. This study offers guidance for the future and calls for coordinated efforts to implement GB programs to achieve a well-nourished Africa.

Abstract
The plant metabolome is considered an important interface between the genome and its phenome, where it plays a significant role in regulating plant growth in response to various environmental cues. A wide array of specialized metabolites is produced by plants, which are essential for mediating environmental interactions and their adaptation. Notably, enhanced accumulation of these specialized metabolites, particularly plant secondary metabolites (PSMs), is a part of the chemical defense response that is directly linked to improved stress tolerance. Therefore, exploring the genetic diversity underlying the immense variation of the secondary metabolite pool could unravel the adaptation mechanisms in plants against different environmental stresses. The post-genomic profiling platforms have enabled the exploration of the link between metabolic diversity and important agronomic traits. The current review focuses on the major achievements and future challenges associated with plant secondary metabolite (PSM) research in graminaceous crops using advanced omics approaches. Given this, we briefly summarize different strategies adopted to explore the genetic diversity and evolution of PSMs in cereal crops. Further, we have discussed the recent technological advancements to integrate multi-omics approaches linking the metabolome diversity with the genome, transcriptome, and proteome of these crops under stress. Combining these data with phenomics (the omics of phenotypes) provides a holistic view of how plants respond to stress. Next, we outlined the genetic manipulation studies performed so far in cereals to engineer secondary metabolic pathways for enhanced stress tolerance. In summary, our review provides new insight into developing genetic and genomic trends in exploring the secondary metabolite diversity in graminaceous crops and discusses how this information can be utilized in designing strategies to generate future stress-resilient crops.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION Leveraging advanced breeding and multi-omics resources is vital to position millet as an essential "nutricereal resource," aligning with IYoM goals, alleviating strain on global cereal production, boosting resilience to climate change, and advancing sustainable crop improvement and biodiversity. The global challenges of food security, nutrition, climate change, and agrarian sustainability demand the adoption of climate-resilient, nutrient-rich crops to support a growing population amidst shifting environmental conditions. Millets, also referred to as "Shree Anna," emerge as a promising solution to address these issues by bolstering food production, improving nutrient security, and fostering biodiversity conservation. Their resilience to harsh environments, nutritional density, cultural significance, and potential to enhance dietary quality index made them valuable assets in global agriculture. Recognizing their pivotal role, the United Nations designated 2023 as the "International Year of Millets (IYoM 2023)," emphasizing their contribution to climate-resilient agriculture and nutritional enhancement. Scientific progress has invigorated efforts to enhance millet production through genetic and genomic interventions, yielding a wealth of advanced molecular breeding technologies and multi-omics resources. These advancements offer opportunities to tackle prevailing challenges in millet, such as anti-nutritional factors, sensory acceptability issues, toxin contamination, and ancillary crop improvements. This review provides a comprehensive overview of molecular breeding and multi-omics resources for nine major millet species, focusing on their potential impact within the framework of IYoM. These resources include whole and pan-genome, elucidating adaptive responses to abiotic stressors, organelle-based studies revealing evolutionary resilience, markers linked to desirable traits for efficient breeding, QTL analysis facilitating trait selection, functional gene discovery for biotechnological interventions, regulatory ncRNAs for trait modulation, web-based platforms for stakeholder communication, tissue culture techniques for genetic modification, and integrated omics approaches enabled by precise application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Aligning these resources with the seven thematic areas outlined by IYoM catalyzes transformative changes in millet production and utilization, thereby contributing to global food security, sustainable agriculture, and enhanced nutritional consequences.

Abstract
Millets, comprising a diverse group of small-seeded grains, have emerged as vital crops with immense nutritional, environmental, and economic significance. The comprehension of complex traits in millets, influenced by multifaceted genetic determinants, presents a compelling challenge and opportunity in agricultural research. This review delves into the transformative roles of phenomics and genomics in deciphering these intricate genetic architectures. On the phenomics front, high-throughput platforms generate rich datasets on plant morphology, physiology, and performance in diverse environments. This data, coupled with field trials and controlled conditions, helps to interpret how the environment interacts with genetics. Genomics provides the underlying blueprint for these complex traits. Genome sequencing and genotyping technologies have illuminated the millet genome landscape, revealing diverse gene pools and evolutionary relationships. Additionally, different omics approaches unveil the intricate information of gene expression, protein function, and metabolite accumulation driving phenotypic expression. This multi-omics approach is crucial for identifying candidate genes and unfolding the intricate pathways governing complex traits. The review highlights the synergy between phenomics and genomics. Genomically informed phenotyping targets specific traits, reducing the breeding size and cost. Conversely, phenomics identifies promising germplasm for genomic analysis, prioritizing variants with superior performance. This dynamic interplay accelerates breeding programs and facilitates the development of climate-smart, nutrient-rich millet varieties and hybrids. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the crucial roles of phenomics and genomics in unlocking the genetic enigma of millets.

Abstract
The male sterility line is a vital approach in the genetic breeding of sorghum. The husking process affects the grain's nutritional composition, emphasizing the intricate relationship between genetic enhancement and dietary requirements. The current study assessed the influence of the Husking Fraction Time Unit (HFTU) process, which was set at 30 (S) and 80 (S) time units per second (S). The study assessed the impact of the (HFTU) process on fifty-one inbred line sorghum race varieties, which implied diverse nutritional profiles considering the pericarp color variations. The assessment of the nutritional profile involved dry matter, total protein, and minerals (P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, and Mn). The variety groups showed a significance value of p ≤ 0.05, indicating the study hypothesis's truth. While results demonstrated substantial impacts implied by the Husking Fraction Time Unit (HFTU) technique, the occurrence was noted when the dry matter percentage was increased in the husked products, specifically the endosperm (grits) and bran. Conversely, the protein variation percentage between the bran and endosperm (grits) for the S. bicolor race was calculated at 33.7%. In comparison, the percentage was 11.8% for the Kafirin race. The 80 (S) time unit, on the other hand, had an observable effect on the mineral reconcentration when the Kafirin race had the highest averages of K mg/kg-1, Ca mg/kg-1, and Fe mg/kg-1, which were 5700.5 mg/kg-1, 551.5 mg/kg-1 and 66.5 mg/kg-1, respectively. The results of this study could benefit breeders and nutrition specialists in developing genotypes and processing sorghum grains, promoting research, and aiding several industrial sectors owing to the grain's adaptability and nutritional properties.

Abstract
Malnutrition, often termed "hidden hunger," represents a pervasive global issue carrying significant implications for health, development, and socioeconomic conditions. Addressing the challenge of inadequate essential nutrients, despite sufficient caloric intake, is crucial. Biofortification emerges as a promising solution by enhance the presence of vital nutrients like iron, zinc, iodine, and vitamin A in edible parts of different crop plants. Crop biofortification can be attained through either agronomic methods or genetic breeding techniques. Agronomic strategies for biofortification encompass the application of mineral fertilizers through foliar or soil methods, as well as leveraging microbe-mediated mechanisms to enhance nutrient uptake. On the other hand, genetic biofortification involves the strategic crossing of plants to achieve a desired combination of genes, promoting balanced nutrient uptake and bioavailability. Additionally, genetic biofortification encompasses innovative methods such as speed breeding, transgenic approaches, genome editing techniques, and integrated omics approaches. These diverse strategies collectively contribute to enhancing the nutritional profile of crops. This review highlights the above-said genetic biofortification strategies and it also covers the aspect of reduction in antinutritional components in food through genetic biofortification.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg2+) is pivotal for the vitality, yield, and quality of horticultural crops. Central to plant physiology, Mg2+ powers photosynthesis as an integral component of chlorophyll, bolstering growth and biomass accumulation. Beyond basic growth, it critically affects crop quality factors, from chlorophyll synthesis to taste, texture, and shelf life. However, Mg2 + deficiency can cripple yields and impede plant development. Magnesium Transporters (MGTs) orchestrate Mg2+ dynamics, with notable variations observed in horticultural species such as Cucumis sativus, Citrullus lanatus, and Citrus sinensis. Furthermore, Mg2+ is key in fortifying plants against environmental stressors and diseases by reinforcing cell walls and spurring the synthesis of defense substances. A burgeoning area of research is the application of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs), which, owing to their nanoscale size and high reactivity, optimize nutrient uptake, and enhance plant growth and stress resilience. Concurrently, modern breeding techniques provide insights into Mg2+ dynamics to develop crops with improved Mg2+ efficiency and resilience to deficiency. Effective Mg2+ management through soil tests, balanced fertilization, and pH adjustments holds promise for maximizing crop health, productivity, and sustainability. This review unravels the nuanced intricacies of Mg2+ in plant physiology and genetics, and its interplay with external factors, serving as a cornerstone for those keen on harnessing its potential for horticultural excellence.
