Abstract
PURPOSE The aim is to encourage the creation of innovative prevention and treatment measures and to help readers in selecting the most effective ones. BACKGROUND Acne vulgaris is the most prevalent skin condition of adolescents, affecting approximately 9% of the global population. Patients become more prone to mental and psychological problems because of it. Several strategies have been established to effectively improve acne vulgaris. However, the complexity of its pathogenesis and the limitations of the existing strategies to control it in terms of bacterial resistance, patient compliance, and safety have made the development of new control strategies a hot topic in skin health research. RESULTS This review systematically summarizes the pathogenesis and prevention strategies of acne vulgaris according to the most recent studies. The limitations of the current research on acne vulgaris and future research directions are presented based on the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the existing prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract
Introduction Adolescent girls are more sensitive to hormonal imbalance with major impact on their nutritional, reproductive, physical, psychosocial, and academic wellbeing. This study explored adolescent girls' knowledge and perceptions of causes and management of symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Materials and methods Using a qualitative approach, focus group discussions were conducted with 116 assented in-school adolescent girls aged 10-19 years between 3rd and 19th October 2022. Two urban and two rural communities in two regions were purposively selected for the study. Using a convenient sampling approach, participants were recruited from Upper Primary, Junior, and Senior High schools. Data was analyzed thematically using both inductive and deductive approaches. Results Senior High School participants had a fair understanding of hormonal imbalance in both regions. Symptoms were perceived to include headaches, heavy and painful periods, and pimples, most of which participants alluded to experiencing. Perceived causes included natural process of adolescent growth, consumption of unhealthy diets, use of cosmetics and medications. Perceived reproductive effects included infertility, pregnancy disorders, breastfeeding challenges, and low sexual drive. Physiological effects included extreme fatigue, loss of appetite and impaired growth. Psychosocial and academic effects included mood swings/irritability, low self-esteem, poor inter-personal relationship, poor concentration in class and irregular school attendance. Female relatives and friends were mostly consulted for advice. Self-medication, dietary modification, physical activities, and personal hygiene were adopted to manage perceived symptoms. Self-medication was common, but physical activities and dietary modification were also adopted by most participants to manage symptoms. Conclusion It is recommended that Ghana Education Service should formally incorporate hormonal-related issues into its School Health Education Programmes to enhance knowledge, attitudes, and management among adolescent girls at all levels of education.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit that affects approximately 9.4% of the global population. Current treatment strategies aim to target as many pathogenic factors involved in the appearance of acne lesions and are centered on a systematic treatment escalation based on disease severity, extension, and treatment response, starting with topical treatments for mild cases and progressing over to systemic therapies in more severe cases. A literature search, which included clinical guidelines, clinical studies, and review articles on acne treatment and maintenance, was conducted to review the pharmacological approaches currently available to treat this disease. AREAS COVERED Topical therapies such as topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, topical antibiotics, and clascoterone, as well as systemic treatments such as oral antibiotics and isotretinoin are discussed in detail. Combined oral contraceptives and spironolactone will not be discussed in this article. EXPERT OPINION There is a need for a blockbuster acne drug that simultaneously targets the four main pathogenic factors involved in the appearance of acne lesions while presenting with minimal side effects. Until such a drug exists, combination therapy will remain the standard of treatment for most acne patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acne vulgaris is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease which has been associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity. However, data on body composition in patients with acne vulgaris are scarce. AIM We aimed to assess body composition in patients with acne vulgaris, compare the results with those of healthy individuals, and evaluate the relationship between body composition and acne severity. METHODS Between March 2023 and May 2023, body composition of patients with acne vulgaris and healthy individuals was prospectively evaluated using Tanita TBF-300 body composition analyzer. RESULTS This study included a total of 320 subjects, 160 patients with acne vulgaris and 160 healthy individuals. Body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage and fat mass were significantly higher in patients with acne vulgaris compared to healthy individuals (p < 0.001, each). BMI, body fat percentage and fat mass were significantly higher in female patients compared to healthy females (p < 0.001, each), higher in male patients compared to healthy males (p = 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively). BMI (p = 0.006), fat free body mass (p < 0.001) and total body water (p < 0.001) were higher in male patients, while body fat percentage (p < 0.001) was higher in female patients. Patients with moderate to severe acne had higher BMI (p < 0.001), body fat percentage (p = 0.001) and fat mass (p < 0.001) than in those with mild acne. CONCLUSION Since high body fat may indicate increased risk and severity of acne, body composition analysis may be useful in treating patients with acne and taking preventive measures against metabolic syndrome in this population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acne vulgaris is one of the most prevalent inflammatory conditions in the world that primarily affects teenagers. Its prevalence and the contributing factors vary across different regions and populations. Genetic predisposition, hormonal influences, dietary habits, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors are believed to be significant contributors. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving 419 participants from the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. The study employed non-probability convenience sampling techniques. Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 27; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY). RESULTS The study found that acne prevalence was high, affecting more than half (66.8%) of the participants, with mild severity reported by 51.8%. Pimples were most commonly found on the face (65.2%), followed by the back (45.3%) and chest (29.6%). Participants with oily skin had twice the likelihood of acne compared to those with dry skin (OR=2.14). Increasing age was associated with a 5% decrease in acne risk per year. Significant associations were found for age (p=0.010), female gender (p=0.017), and oily skin (p<0.001) with acne development. CONCLUSION The study found a high prevalence rate of acne vulgaris among the young population in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Age, female gender, and having oily skin were predictors for developing acne vulgaris. Complications such as acne scarring and psychological impacts such as shyness underscore the significant burden of acne on social and psychological well-being. Enhanced treatment and improved quality of life necessitate heightened awareness campaigns concerning acne vulgaris, its treatments, and associated complications, as revealed by the study.

Abstract
Air pollutants deteriorate the survival environment and endanger human health around the world. A large number of studies have confirmed that air pollution jeopardizes multiple organs, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, and central nervous systems. Skin is the largest organ and the first barrier that protects us from the outside world. Air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will affect the structure and function of the skin and bring about the development of inflammatory skin diseases (atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis), skin accessory diseases (acne, alopecia), auto-immune skin diseases (cutaneous lupus erythematosus(CLE) scleroderma), and even skin tumors (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC)). Oxidative stress, skin barrier damage, microbiome dysbiosis, and skin inflammation are the pathogenesis of air pollution stimulation. In this review, we summarize the current evidence on the effects of air pollution on skin diseases and possible mechanisms to provide strategies for future research.

Abstract
Previously considered a skin disease exclusively affecting adolescents, characterized by inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin lesions, acne vulgaris is now increasingly observed in adult life, including post-menopause. Today, adult female acne (AFA) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, with polymorphic lesions presenting as open or closed comedones, papules, pustules, and even nodules or cysts, often with the presence of sequelae. AFA may persist from adolescence or manifest de novo in adulthood. Its etiology is multifactorial, involving genetic, hormonal, dietary, and environmental factors, yet still incompletely understood. Increased sebum production, keratinocyte hyper-proliferation, inflammation, and reduced diversity of Cutibacterium acnes strains are the underlying disease mechanisms. During menopausal transition, a relative increase in androgen levels occurs, just as estrogens begin to decline, which can manifest itself as acne. Whereas most AFA exhibit few acne lesions with normo-androgenic serum levels, baseline investigations including androgen testing panel enable associated comorbidities to be eliminated, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or tumors. Another interesting feature is AFA's impact on quality of life, which is greater than in adolescents, being similar to other chronic diseases like asthma. The therapeutic approach to AFA depends on its severity and associated features. This review investigates the intricate facets of AFA, with a specific focus on incidence rates, treatment modalities, and the curious impact of menopause. Utilizing insights from contemporary literature and scientific discussions, this article seeks to advance our understanding of AFA, offering new perspectives to shape clinical practices and improve patient outcomes.

This review provides an overview of recent trends in acne management, focusing on clinical studies conducted in the past decade. Key findings include insights into acne pathogenesis, emerging treatment modalities, comparative effectiveness of traditional and emerging therapies, and considerations for patient-centered care. The review underscores the importance of staying updated with recent clinical studies to provide evidence-based care and optimize patient treatment outcomes. Moreover, it highlights the need for continued research efforts to develop personalized treatment approaches, explore combination therapies, and address the psychosocial impact of acne. Collaborative endeavors between clinicians and researchers are essential to advance the field of acne management and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Psychological stress is a crucial factor in the development of many skin diseases, and the stigma caused by skin disorders may further increase the psychological burden, forming a vicious cycle of psychological stress leading to skin diseases. Therefore, understanding the relationship between stress and skin diseases is necessary. The skin, as the vital interface with the external environment, possesses its own complex immune system, and the neuroendocrine system plays a central role in the stress response of the body. Stress-induced alterations in the immune system can also disrupt the delicate balance of immune cells and inflammatory mediators in the skin, leading to immune dysregulation and increased susceptibility to various skin diseases. Stress can also affect the skin barrier function, impair wound healing, and promote the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby exacerbating existing skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and urticaria. In the present review, we explored the intricate relationship between stress and skin diseases from a neuroendocrine-immune interaction perspective. We explored the occurrence and development of skin diseases in the context of stress, the stress models for skin diseases, the impact of stress on skin function and diseases, and relevant epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Understanding the relationship between stress and skin diseases from a neuroendocrine-immune interaction perspective provides a comprehensive framework for targeted interventions and new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is one of the most prevalent skin conditions, affecting almost all teenagers worldwide. Multiple factors, including the excessive production of sebum, dysbiosis of the skin microbiome, disruption of keratinization within hair follicles, and local inflammation, are believed to trigger or aggravate acne. Immune activity plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of acne. Recent research has improved our understanding of the immunostimulatory functions of microorganisms, lipid mediators, and neuropeptides. Additionally, significant advances have been made in elucidating the intricate mechanisms through which cutaneous innate and adaptive immune cells perceive and transmit stimulatory signals and initiate immune responses. However, our understanding of precise temporal and spatial patterns of immune activity throughout various stages of acne development remains limited. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge concerning the immune processes involved in the initiation and progression of acne. Furthermore, we highlight the significance of detailed spatiotemporal analyses, including analyses of temporal dynamics of immune cell populations as well as single-cell and spatial RNA sequencing, for the development of targeted therapeutic and prevention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents who make up a vast majority of the secondary school population are at a stage at which they are largely affected by acne. This condition, which is widely visible and easily recognized by peers, has numerous misperceptions surrounding it, which may influence attitudes toward people affected by it. There is a paucity of information on the prevalence of acne and how adolescents in Jos, Nigeria, view the condition. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the prevalence of acne, perceived risk factors, and the accuracy of self-report among adolescents in Jos, Nigeria. The study also sought to understand perceptions surrounding acne in this age group. METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents attending private and public secondary schools in Jos, Nigeria. In total, 482 students were recruited through a multistaged stratified random sampling method. A self-administered semistructured questionnaire was used to collect information on history of acne, perceptions of causes, and the attitude toward those who have the condition. All participants were examined for the presence of acne. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis were conducted using SPSS (version 26; IBM Corp). RESULTS The self-reported prevalence of acne was 44% and that upon clinical examination was 55%. Self-report showed a moderate degree of agreement with clinical diagnosis (Cohen κ=57.3%; P<.001). Predictive factors for the presence of acne in general were age of ≥15 years (odds ratio [OR] 1.79, 95% CI 1.12-2.87; P=.02), being in a private school (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.38-3.42; P=.001), and being in a senior secondary class (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.32-3.47; P=.002). The female gender (OR 3.03, 95% CI 1.64-5.61; P=.001) and religion (OR 3.24, 95% CI 1.27-8.24; P=.02) were predictive for acne only among adolescents aged <15 years, while a positive family history was predictive in those aged ≥15 years (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.15-3.61; P=.02). A distinct perception and attitude pattern surrounding acne was observed, as a significant proportion (84/131, 64.1% vs 47/131, 35.9%; P=.02) of those who related acne to a biological phenomenon had acne themselves; however, the belief that acne is caused by skin lightening practices was significantly more common in those without acne (19/28, 67.9%) than in those with acne (9/28, 32.1%; P=.01). One-fourth of the adolescents (n=122, 25.3%) had no idea of the possible causes of acne. CONCLUSIONS Though acne is a prevalent skin condition among Nigerian adolescents, many misperceptions and unfavorable attitudes surround acne and persons affected by the condition. Our findings have revealed the need to work with the school health program to educate the general adolescent population about acne, to refer and manage teenagers with acne.

Abstract
Topical retinoids have an essential role in treatment of acne. Trifarotene, a topical retinoid selective for retinoic acid receptor (RAR) γ, is the most recent retinoid approved for treatment of acne. RAR-γ is the most common isoform of RARs in skin, and the strong selectivity of trifarotene for RAR-γ translates to efficacy in low concentration. Trifarotene, like other topical retinoids, acts by increasing keratinocyte differentiation and decreasing proliferation, which reduces hyperkeratinization. Retinoids have also been shown to inhibit inflammatory pathways via effects on leukocyte migration, toll-like receptors, and Activator Protein (AP)-1. Large-scale randomized, controlled clinical trials have demonstrated trifarotene to be safe, well tolerated, and efficacious in reducing both comedones and papules/pustules of acne. However, unlike all other retinoids, trifarotene is the first topical retinoid with rigorous clinical data on safety and efficacy in truncal acne. Data supporting use of trifarotene to manage acne are reviewed in this publication.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory dermatological pathology that affects mostly young people. However, it can also appear in adulthood, mainly in women. It has a high psychosocial impact, not only at the time of active lesions but also due to the consequences of lesions such as scarring and hyperpigmentation. Several factors are involved in the physiopathology of acne and the constant search for active ingredients is a reality, namely phytotherapeutic ingredients. Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betch) Cheel with known antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a candidate for the treatment of acne. This review aims to describe the various properties of tea tree oil that make it a possible ingredient to use in the treatment of acne and to present several human studies that have evaluated the efficacy and safety of using tea tree oil in the treatment of acne. It can be concluded that tea tree oil has good antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that result in a decrease in the number of inflammatory lesions, mainly papules, and pustules. However, given the diversity of study designs, it is not possible to draw concrete conclusions on the efficacy and safety of this oil in the treatment of acne.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acne pathophysiology includes a complex interaction among inflammatory mediators, hyperseborrhea, alteration of keratinization and follicular colonization by Propionibacterium acnes. AIMS To describe the impact of the exposome on acne and how photoprotection can improve outcomes. METHODS A narrative review of the literature was carried out; searches with Google Scholar and Pubmed from January 1992 to November 2022 were performed. The keywords used were "acne," "sunscreens," "photoprotection," "cosmetics," "cosmeceuticals," "pathogenesis," "etiology," "exposome," "sunlight," "stress," "lack of sleep," "diet," "postinflammatory hyperpigmentation," "pollution," "exposome," "ultraviolet radiation," and "visible light." RESULTS Environmental factors such as solar radiation, air pollution, tobacco consumption, psychological stress, diverse microorganisms, nutrition, among others, can trigger or worsen acne. Solar radiation can temporarily improve lesions. However, it can induce proinflammatory and profibrotic responses, and produce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and/or post-inflammatory erythema. While photoprotection is widely recommended to acne patients, only four relevant studies were found. Sunscreens can significantly improve symptomatology or enhance treatment and can prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, they can provide camouflage and improve quality of life. Based on acne pathogenesis, optimal sunscreens should have emollient, antioxidant and sebum controlling properties. CONCLUSIONS The exposome and solar radiation can trigger or worsen acne. UV light can induce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation/erythema, and can initiate flares. The use of specifically formulated sunscreens could enhance adherence to topical or systemic therapy, camouflage lesions (tinted sunscreens), decrease inflammation, and reduce the incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation/erythema.

Abstract
Introduction Improving sense of community belonging (SCB) would help people live longer, happier lives. Although the importance of neighborhood environment on SCB is stressed in the literature, few studies have paid attention to perceived environment, as well as consider mediation effects such as neighborhood social interactions and place satisfaction. Methods Relied on a sample of 1051 respondents in Shanghai in 2018, this study investigates the associations between both objective and perceived neighborhood environment attributes and SCB in urban China, mediated by neighborly interactions and community satisfaction using structural equation modeling. Results The results suggest that the influence of perceived neighborhood environment on SCB is more prominent than that of objective neighborhood environment. In detail, perceived pedestrian facilities and perceived leisure facilities are vital to SCB, while among objective neighborhood environmental elements, the influence of land use entropy, park density and street greenery are significant. Then, neighborhood environmental attributes can influence SCB by affecting neighborly interactions and community satisfaction. We also identify gender differences in the effects of neighborhood environment upon SCB. Discussion Given increasing awareness of the connection, neighborhood environment may prove to be valuable assets to improve individuals' psychosocial constructs such as SCB.

Abstract
Hot and humid countries such as Indonesia have a higher prevalence of acne vulgaris (AV). The activity of skin microbes, not only Cutibacterium acnes, contribute to the formation of AV. Topical and oral antibiotics are routinely prescribed to treat AV. As antimicrobial resistance rates increase globally, there are concerns about decreased efficacy. This study intends to systematically evaluate the microbiomes isolated from AV lesions and their antibiotics susceptibility in Indonesia. The data were retrieved through PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect searches for articles published until July 2022 using three multiword searches. Sixteen studies published between 2001 and 2022 were identified from which the data were pooled using a random effects model. The pooled prevalence estimates demonstrated that C. acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus aureus were the three common microbes associated with AV in Indonesia. Tetracyclines had lower resistance rates compared to those of macrolides and clindamycin, with C. acnes showing a resistance rate that is as high as 60.1% against macrolides. C. acnes resistance against minocycline showed an increasing trend, whereas the resistances to doxycycline, clindamycin, and macrolides stagnated. The high resistance prevalence and trends signify a public health concern. The results of this study call for the development of antibiotic stewardship programs in Indonesia, which may lead to improved acne outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have shown that various products of Citrus sinensis, for example, crude extracts, essential oil, and purified components, possess anti-acne properties. However, the development of chlorogenic acid-functionalized silver nanoparticles of C. sinensis in gel matrix aiding QbD design has not been evaluated for acne treatment. AIM In this study, we have developed chlorogenic acid-functionalized silver nanoparticles of C. sinensis in a gel matrix employing a QbD approach for acne treatment. MATERIAL AND METHOD Citrus sinensis extract-loaded silver nanoparticles were functionalized with chlorogenic acid, which acted as a bio-reducing agent and further improved anti-acne properties. The developed formulation was optimized via Box-Behnken Design. The formulation morphology was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The release profile of C. sinensis extract formulation was assessed by an in vitro release study and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Moreover, the characterization study of the gel was performed that included an evaluation of the extrudability and spreadability of the developed gel. Furthermore, the anti-oxidant efficacy of AgN-CA formulation was validated using the DPPH test. RESULTS The results showed a particle size of 71.78 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.297, a zeta potential of -36.12 mV, and an entrapment efficiency of 79.42% ± 6.79%. The results also indicated a uniform particle size. The release profile of C. sinensis extract revealed that 73.95% of the drug was released, whereas CLSM pictures of mice skin evidently demonstrated that the rhodamine B-treated AgN-CA gel penetrated much more extensively in comparison to the control. Furthermore, the anti-oxidant efficacy of AgN-CA formulation was validated using the DPPH test. Moreover, the characterization study of the developed gel, including its extrudability and spreadability, was found to be 16.02 ± 3.21 g and 30.73 ± 5.94 g cm/s, respectively. Also, texture analysis findings revealed that AgN-CA gel had firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, and viscosity index of 159.69 g, 634.95 g s, -116.33 g, and -501.80 g s, respectively, indicating that the AgN-CA gel was stable. CONCLUSION The current study showed that AgN-CA is an effective drug carrier system for the topical administration of C. sinensis extract for the treatment of acne.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the therapeutic effect of alternating red and blue light irradiation combined with collagen in patients with acne vulgaris and the risk factors of short-term recurrence. METHOD A retrospective analysis was conducted on 105 patients with acne vulgaris treated in Baoji Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to February 2020. 50 patients received conventional treatment (Pumen red and blue light) were taken as the control group, and the other 55 patients treated with collagen dressing on the basis of control group were taken as the research group. Clinical efficacy, changes of serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) before and after treatment, and the occurrence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups of patients. The scores of inflammatory skin lesions, facial seborrhea scores, stratum corneum water content and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were compared before and after the treatment. The 1-year review records of patients were queried, and they were divided into a relapse group and a non-relapse group according to the recurrence situation. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors affecting the recurrence of the patients. RESULTS The clinical efficacy of the patients in research group after treatment was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). IL-1β and IL-6 in the serum of patients after treatment were markedly decreased, and such decline in the research group was more evident after treatment (P<0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions, the scores of inflammatory skin lesions, and facial seborrhea and TEWL in the research group after treatment were all lower than those in the control group (all P<0.05), while the water content of the stratum corneum was higher comparatively (P<0.05). 17 patients were confirmed with recurrence within 1 year after treatment. Logistic regression analysis found that age, monthly income, pre-treatment IL-1β and pre-treatment IL-6 were risk factors for recurrence. CONCLUSION Alternating red and blue light irradiation combined with collagen can improve the treatment efficacy in patients with acne vulgaris. And indexes like age, monthly income, pre-treatment IL-1β and pre-treatment IL-6 are risk factors affecting the recurrence of patients.

Abstract
Many researches have reported the air pollution impacts, either long term or short term, on inflammatory skin diseases, but there are few studies on the relation between PM2.5 and acne vulgaris. To determine the correlation between short-term PM2.5 exposure and acne outpatient visits, data for 120,842 acne vulgaris outpatient visits between December 2013 and December 2019 were obtained from three large hospitals in Chongqing, China. Both single-pollutant models and two-pollutant models were established to explore the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and acne outpatient visits. The stratified analyses were conducted through two-sample z-tests to investigate the possible gender (male or female) and age (< 25 years or ≥ 25 years) differences in PM2.5 effects. The results demonstrated positive correlations between PM2.5 concentrations and acne outpatient visits. A 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration was associated with a 1.71% (95% CI: 1.06-2.36%) increase in acne outpatient visits at lag 0-7 day. Stratified analyses showed that PM2.5 effects were greater in individuals aged ≥ 25 years than those aged < 25 years, but no gender difference was found. In conclusion, short-term PM2.5 exposure was positively associated with the risk of acne outpatient visits, especially for people ≥ 25 years old.

Abstract
Background
Acne vulgaris is a skin disorder that affects males and females with significant impact on quality of life. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a series of non-pharmaceutical interventions globally to reduce the spread of the virus particularly since there have been no known cures or definitive treatment for the disease. One key non-pharmaceutical intervention was recommendation on wearing of face masks. There are reports of discomfort associated with wearing face mask including complaints of various skin rashes, acne and headaches which could hinder appropriate use of face masks. While the dermatological problems associated with face mask use have been comprehensively explored in high income countries, the data is sparse in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to determine the association between face mask use and development of acne vulgaris in our developing country setting. We subsequently determined risk factors for development of acne vulgaris such as duration of wearing face masks, type of face mask, and prior dermatological skin condition history. We aimed to also determine the potential of acne development secondary to face mask use to reducing predisposition to wearing face masks.
Methods
This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted in within two local government areas of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Trained interviewers administered pre-tested questionnaires to 1316 consecutive consenting adult participants randomly approached for informed consent at various public locations. Information was inputted into MS Excel and analyzed using Epi-info.
Results
A total number of 1316 persons participated in this study with mean age 34.4 ±12.3 years and median age 35.5years. Male: female ratio was 1:1.41. New onset acne or worsening of acne following consistent wearing of face masks was reported by 323 (24.5%) of the 1316 participants in this study. The surgical face mask was the least likely to predispose to acne p<0.05. Compared with the surgical mask, persons using N95 face mask and cloth mask were 1.89 and 1.41 times more likely to have acne respectively. Persons with prior history of acne were more likely to develop new acne or experience worsening of acne following wearing of face mask OR 3.89, 95% CI 2.85, 5.33; p <0.05). The length of time of daily mask wearing was not significantly associated with occurrence of new onset acne or worsening of acne. Persons reporting prior histories of allergy were more likely to develop acne in this study (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.50, 2.88; p<0.05). In this study, 192 (59.4%) of those who reported having acne following face masks use responded they have a negative predisposition to wearing masks.
Conclusion
Our finding of greater predisposition to development or worsening of acne following consistent use of face masks could have implications for the control strategy of COVID-19. The finding that the N95 face mask was more significantly associated with acne is of concern as this is the preferred face mask in healthcare settings. It is important for the medical community to investigate feasible and safe recommendations to help alleviate this condition.

Risk of psychiatric disorders in patients taking isotretinoin: A nationwide, population-based, cohort study in Taiwan. J Affect Disord 2022; 296:277-282. Abstract
BACKGROUND After isotretinoin's approval to treat patients with recalcitrant acne, there have been continued debates around its psychiatric safety profile. This study aimed to assess the risk of psychiatric disorders in patients with acne who are taking isotretinoin. METHODS We used de-identified information from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from 2000 to 2015 to examine the risk for psychiatric disorders among patients with acne who were taking isotretinoin. We performed subgroup analyses based on the dosage and duration of isotretinoin administration. RESULTS This study included 29,943 participants during a 16-year follow-up period. We found no significantly increased risk for psychiatric disorders among patients taking isotretinoin compared with patients who did not receive isotretinoin treatment (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.009, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.422-1.696). Subgroup analyses showed no significantly increased risk for psychiatric disorders in patients taking different doses of isotretinoin (≤ 20 mg per day, aHR: 0.892, 95% CI: 0.371-1.501; > 20 mg per day, aHR: 1.068, 95% CI: 0.446-1.798). There was also no significant increase in risk for patients undergoing isotretinoin treatment over different periods (≤ 6 months, aHR: 0.924, 95% CI: 0.392-1.612; > 6 months, aHR: 1.196, 95% CI: 0.488-2.004). LIMITATIONS We did not analyze the risk of suicidal ideation, and it could be underestimated in medical claims databases. CONCLUSIONS We found no increased risk of psychiatric disorders among Taiwanese patients with acne who were taking isotretinoin. Higher dosage or longer duration of isotretinoin treatment did not increase the risk for developing a psychiatric disorder.

Abstract
Background Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease that can lead to disfigurement and psychological distress. This article aims to provide a narrative updated review on the management of acne vulgaris. Methods A PubMed search was performed with Clinical Queries using the key term “acne”. The search strategy included clinical trials, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, observational studies and reviews. The search was restricted to articles published in English. Results Treatments of acne include proper skin care, topical medications, oral medications and procedural therapies. Topical agents are the first-line treatment for mild-to-moderate acne and can be used as combination therapy for more severe acne. Systemic therapies are usually prescribed for the initial treatment of moderate-to-severe acne as well as for acne that is refractory to topical therapies. Conclusion Topical retinoids are the drugs of choice for the treatment and maintenance therapy of patients with mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris. Depending on the severity of the acne, topical retinoids may be used alone or in combination with benzoyl peroxide and topical or oral antibiotics. Oral antibiotics are an important therapy for inflammatory acne unresponsive to topical therapy. Neither topical nor oral antibiotics should be used as monotherapy. Oral contraceptives and/or spironolactone are useful for many women with acne. Oral isotretinoin is the drug of choice for severe, extensive, nodular acne vulgaris but is also often used in moderate cases where scarring is evident, acne-related psychosocial distress is significant or other treatment modalities have failed.

Abstract
Technological developments in telecommunications, especially cell phone, enable us to keep communicate without meeting each other. Especially during the latest coronavirus outbreak, when people need to keep up social distance. Meanwhile, electronic devices such as smartphone, tablets, laptops, and light-emitting diode screens are the sources of visible lights that can emit high levels of short-wavelength visible light (blue region in the light spectrum). Prolonged exposure to high-energy blue light, heat dissipation from cell phone, friction, trapped sweat and oil, accumulation of dust, and increased bacterial growth can cause cell phone acne. Management of cell phone acne from prevention to combination therapy based on the results of the evaluation of the severity of acne is needed.

Abstract
Background Acne is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with a high prevalence in adolescent and early adult years. The aim of this study was to assess the self-perceived beliefs of Montenegrin secondary school pupils regarding the acne aggravating and ameliorating factors. Methods This cross-sectional survey of the pupils was conducted during October and November 2020 in four randomly selected public secondary schools in Podgorica, Montenegro. All 500 pupils were asked to fill in a questionnaire that included questions on age, sex, presence of acne, perceived acne aggravating and ameliorating factors, and sources of their information about acne. Results A total of 500 pupils, 234 (46.8%) boys, and 266 (53.2%) girls, aged 14−17 years, participated in the study. Acne was self-reported in 249 (49.8%) pupils, whereas 251 (50.2%) did not report acne. Factors most often believed to aggravate acne were inadequate face washing (85.0%), hormones (84.0%), sweets (82.0%), greasy food (72.6%), makeup (71.2%), and stress (67.8%). Overall the most prevalent acne ameliorating factors were cosmetic treatment (80.4%), increased water consumption (77.6%), a diet change to a healthier food choice (77.4%), and being on school holidays (62.2%). Girls reported more frequently that genetics, stress, sweets consumption, inadequate face wash, and makeup are acne exacerbating factors, whilst cosmetic treatment, increased water consumption, smoking, and being on school holidays are acne ameliorating factors. Boys more frequently considered the benefit of losing weight. There was no statistically significant difference between pupils with and without acne in perceived factors, except for cosmetic treatment. Those with acne more frequently believed in the benefits of cosmetic treatment. Conclusions Many adolescents’ self-perceived beliefs about factors that aggravate and ameliorate acne are myths and misconceptions without evidence-based justification. More efforts are needed to educate pupils about the acne aggravating and ameliorating factors, its health-related consequences, and the treatment possibilities.

Abstract
Introduction: Acne is a chronic, inflammatory, and immune-mediated disease of the pilosebaceous unit, highly prevalent in adolescents. However, an increasing number of adults over 25 years old with facial acne, particularly women, have been observed. It is considered a different disease when compared to acne vulgaris. Face is the mainly involved area with inflammatory lesions and more sensitive skin, pointing out the need of a holistic approach.Areas covered: We performed a comprehensive literature search on PubMed database, up to January 2021, regarding adult female acne. We synthesized data about pathogenesis; differences compared to acne vulgaris; and treatment, with focus in the management challenges and perspectives.Expert opinion: It is essential to value the negative impact on quality of life of adult female acne, independently of severity. The disease has prolonged evolution, and patient might be resilient once the improvement, regardless of the treatment option, will just be noticeable after 3 months. Aggravating factors should be clearly discussed, such as the need of changing many habits, especially lesions manipulation. The therapeutic regimen includes make-up and tailored skin care (considering proneness to sensitivity), while anti-acne drugs should be chosen in accordance with desire to be pregnant, presence of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
