Abstract
Resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenol, has been suggested to influence glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of its action remains largely unknown due to its multiple biological targets and low bioavailability. In this study, we demonstrate that RSV supplementation ameliorates high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, enhancing the abundance of anti-obesity bacterial strains such as Akkermansia, Bacteroides and Blautia. The critical role of gut microbiota in RSV-mediated anti-obesity effects was confirmed through antibiotic-induced microbiome depletion and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which showed that RSV treatment effectively mitigates body weight, histopathological damage, glucose dysregulation and systematic inflammation associated with HFD. Metabolomics analysis revealed that RSV supplementation significantly increases the levels of the gut microbial flavonoid catabolite 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4-HPA). Notably, 4-HPA was sufficient to reverse obesity and glucose intolerance in HFD-fed mice. Mechanistically,4-HPA treatment markedly regulates SIRT1 signaling pathways and induces the expression of beige fat and thermogenesis-specific markers in white adipose tissue (WAT). These beneficial effects of 4-HPA are partially abolished by EX527, a known SIRT1 inhibitor. Collectively, our findings indicate that RSV improve obesity through a gut microbiota-derived 4-HPA-SIRT1 axis, highlighting gut microbiota metabolites as a promising target for obesity prevention.

Abstract
Cumulative evidence attests to the essential roles of commensal microbes in the physiology of hosts. Although the microbiome has been a major research subject since the time of Luis Pasteur and William Russell over 140 years ago, recent findings that certain intracellular bacteria contribute to the pathophysiology of healthy vs. diseased tissues have brought the field of the microbiome to a new era of investigation. Particularly, in the field of breast cancer research, breast-tumor-resident bacteria are now deemed to be essential players in tumor initiation and progression. This is a resurrection of Russel's bacterial cause of cancer theory, which was in fact abandoned over 100 years ago. This review will introduce some of the recent findings that exemplify the roles of breast-tumor-resident microbes in breast carcinogenesis and metastasis and provide mechanistic explanations for these phenomena. Such information would be able to justify the utility of breast-tumor-resident microbes as biomarkers for disease progression and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Introduction: Gan-jiang-ling-zhu (GJLZ) decoction is a classical traditional Chinese medicine prescription. Through invigorating yang, activating qi and dissipating dampness, GJLZ decoction is widely applied for the treatment of chronic digestive disease, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. However, efficacy and mechanism of GJLZ decoction behind nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) treatment remains unelucidated. Methods: NASH was induced in mice, followed by treatment with GJLZ decoction. Various methods including hematoxylin-eosin, oil red O staining, and triglyceride analysis were employed to evaluate the treatment effects of GJLZ decoction on NASH. Gut microbiota, metabolomics, cell viability assays, immunofluorescence and Western blotting were performed to unveil the mechanism behind GJLZ decoction. Results: GJLZ decoction treatment significantly improved hepatic steatosis in mice with NASH. It led to remodeling of gut flora and metabolite structures, including the 12-tridecenoic acid level. 12-Tridecenoic acid aggravated hepatic steatosis by promoting acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase alpha (ACC) expression and inhibiting carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) expression. GJLZ decoction treatment reduced the 12-tridecenoic acid level, inhibited ACC activity and promoted CPT1A expression. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that 12-tridecenoic acid aggravated hepatic steatosis by affecting the ACC-CPT1A axis and GJLZ decoction treatment effectively reduced the 12-tridecenoic acid level and improved steatosis.

Abstract
Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a type of liver metabolic syndrome. Employing multi-omics analyses encompassing the microbiome, metabolome and transcriptome is crucial for comprehensively elucidating the biological processes underlying NAFLD. Methods Hepatic tissue, blood and fecal samples were obtained from 9 NAFLD model mice and 8 normal control mice. Total fecal microbiota DNA was extracted, and 16S rRNA was amplified, to analyze alterations in the gut microbiota (GM) induced by NAFLD. Subsequently, diagnostic strains for NAFLD were screened, and their functional aspects were examined. Differential metabolites and differentially expressed genes were also screened, followed by enrichment analysis. Correlations between the differential microbiota and metabolites, as well as between the DEGs and differential metabolites were studied. A collinear network involving key genes-, microbiota-and metabolites was constructed. Results Ileibacterium and Ruminococcaceae, both belonging to Firmicutes; Olsenella, Duncaniella and Paramuribaculum from Bacteroidota; and Bifidobacterium, Coriobacteriaceae_UCG_002 and Olsenella from Actinobacteriota were identified as characteristic strains associated with NAFLD. Additionally, differentially expressed metabolites were predominantly enriched in tryptophan, linoleic acid and methylhistidine metabolism pathways. The functions of 2,510 differentially expressed genes were found to be associated with disease occurrence. Furthermore, a network comprising 8 key strains, 14 key genes and 83 key metabolites was constructed. Conclusion Through this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of NAFLD alterations, exploring the gut microbiota, genes and metabolites of the results offer insights into the speculated biological mechanisms underlying NAFLD.

Abstract
The functions of the gut are closely related to those of many other organs in the human body. Indeed, the gut microbiota (GM) metabolize several nutrients and compounds that, once released in the bloodstream, can reach distant organs, thus influencing the metabolic and inflammatory tone of the host. The main microbiota-derived metabolites responsible for the modulation of endocrine responses are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), bile acids and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). These molecules can (i) regulate the pancreatic hormones (insulin and glucagon), (ii) increase glycogen synthesis in the liver, and (iii) boost energy expenditure, especially in skeletal muscles and brown adipose tissue. In other words, they are critical in maintaining glucose and lipid homeostasis. In GM dysbiosis, the imbalance of microbiota-related products can affect the proper endocrine and metabolic functions, including those related to the gut-liver-pancreas axis (GLPA). In addition, the dysbiosis can contribute to the onset of some diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)/non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this review, we explored the roles of the gut microbiota-derived metabolites and their involvement in onset and progression of these diseases. In addition, we detailed the main microbiota-modulating strategies that could improve the diseases' development by restoring the healthy balance of the GLPA.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic metabolic disease worldwide. The disturbance of the gut microbiota has a complex influence on the development of DM. Polysaccharides are one type of the most important natural components with anti-diabetic effects. Gut microbiota can participate in the fermentation of polysaccharides, and through this, polysaccharides regulate the gut microbiota and improve DM. This review begins by a summary of the sources, anti-diabetic effects and the gut microbiota regulation functions of natural polysaccharides. Then, the mechanisms of polysaccharides in regulating the gut microbiota to exert anti-diabetic effects and the structure-activity relationship are summarized. It is found that polysaccharides from plants, fungi, and marine organisms show great hypoglycemic activities and the gut microbiota regulation functions. The mechanisms mainly include repairing the gut burrier, reshaping gut microbiota composition, changing the metabolites, regulating anti-inflammatory activity and immune function, and regulating the signal pathways. Structural characteristics of polysaccharides, such as monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, and type of glycosidic linkage, show great influence on the anti-diabetic activity of polysaccharides. This review provides a reference for the exploration and development of the anti-diabetic effects of polysaccharides.

Abstract
Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the major problems of chronic liver disease worldwide. It not only causes damage to the liver but also engenders chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Recent studies have shown that regulating Bacillus coagulans can improve NAFLD. Objectives This trial explores whether B. coagulans TCI711 (BCT) could ameliorate NAFLD. Methods A total of 57 patients with NAFLD were recruited through FibroScan liver fibrosis scanner and divided into placebo (n = 28) and BCT-supplemented groups (n = 29). Specifically, 1 BCT probiotic capsule was supplemented daily for 8 wk. Furthermore, the blood, stool, and fatty liver content were then examined. Results Parameters evaluated for liver and kidney indicators showed no side effects after supplementing BCT. A significant reduction of 8.7% in the fatty liver was achieved by effectively suppressing the grade of fatty liver as revealed by controlled attenuation parameter. BCT also regulated gut microbiota profiles, with significant increases observed in Bifidobacterium, Eubacterium, Ruminococcaceae, and Sellimonas compared with the baseline. Conclusions BCT may improve NAFLD by regulating gut microbiota, and parameters evaluated for liver and kidney indicate no side effects.

Abstract
The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize the associations between gut microbiota composition and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. To compare the differences between individuals with or without NAFLD, the standardized mean difference and 95% confidence interval were computed for each α-diversity index and relative abundance of gut microbes. The β-diversity indices were summarized in a qualitative manner. A total of 54 studies with 8894 participants were included. Overall, patients with NAFLD had moderate reduction in α-diversity indices including Shannon (SMD = -0.36, 95% CI = [-0.53, -0.19], p < 0.001) and Chao 1 (SMD = -0.42, 95% CI = [-0.68, -0.17], p = 0.001), but no significant differences were found for Simpson, observed species, phylogenetic diversity, richness, abundance-based coverage estimator, and evenness (p ranged from 0.081 to 0.953). Over 75% of the included studies reported significant differences in β-diversity. Although there was substantial interstudy heterogeneity, especially for analyses at the phylum, class, and family levels, the majority of the included studies showed alterations in the depletion of anti-inflammatory microbes (i.e., Ruminococcaceae and Coprococcus) and the enrichment of proinflammatory microbes (i.e., Fusobacterium and Escherichia) in patients with NAFLD. Perturbations in gut microbiota were associated with NAFLD, commonly reflected by a reduction in beneficial species and an increase in the pathogenic species.

Abstract
Although fat is one of the indispensable components of food flavor, excessive fat consumption could cause obesity, metabolism syndromes and an imbalance in the intestinal flora. In the pursuit of a healthy diet, designing fat reducing foods by inhibiting lipid digestion and calorie intake is a promising strategy. Altering the gastric emptying rates of lipids as well as acting on the lipase by suppressing the enzymatic activity or limiting lipase diffusion via interfacial modulation can effectively decrease lipolysis rates. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of colloid-based strategies that can be employed to retard lipid hydrolysis, including pancreatic lipase inhibitors, emulsion-based interfacial modulation and fat substitutes. Plants-/microorganisms-derived lipase inhibitors bind to catalytic active sites and change the enzymatic conformation to inhibit lipase activity. Introducing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions into the food can effectively delay lipolysis via steric hindrance of interfacial particulates. Regulating stability and physical states of emulsions can also affect the rate of hydrolysis by altering the active hydrolysis surface. 3D network structure assembled by fat substitutes with high viscosity can not only slow down the peristole and obstruct the diffusion of lipase to the oil droplets but also impede the transportation of lipolysis products to epithelial cells for adsorption. Their applications in low-calorie bakery, dairy and meat products were also discussed, emphasizing fat intake reduction, structure and flavor retention and potential health benefits. However, further application of these strategies in large-scale food production still requires more optimization on cost and lipid reducing effects. This review provides a comprehensive review on colloidal approaches, design, principles and applications of fat reducing strategies to meet the growing demand for healthier diet and offer practical insights for the low-calorie food industry.

Abstract
Impaired iron metabolism has been increasingly observed in many diseases, but a deeper, mechanistic understanding of the cellular impact of altered iron metabolism is still lacking. In addition, deficits in neuronal energy metabolism due to reduced glucose import were described for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its comorbidities like obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this review is to present the molecular link between both observations. Insufficient cellular glucose uptake triggers increased ferritin expression, leading to depletion of the cellular free iron pool and stabilization of the hypoxia-induced factor (HIF) 1α. This transcription factor induces the expression of the glucose transporters (Glut) 1 and 3 and shifts the cellular metabolism towards glycolysis. If this first line of defense is not adequate for sufficient glucose supply, further reduction of the intracellular iron pool affects the enzymes of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and activates the AMP-activated kinase (AMPK). This enzyme triggers the translocation of Glut4 to the plasma membrane as well as the autophagic recycling of cell components in order to mobilize energy resources. Moreover, AMPK activates the autophagic process of ferritinophagy, which provides free iron urgently needed as a cofactor for the synthesis of heme- and iron-sulfur proteins. Excessive activation of this pathway ends in ferroptosis, a special iron-dependent form of cell death, while hampered AMPK activation steadily reduces the iron pools, leading to hypoferremia with iron sequestration in the spleen and liver. Long-lasting iron depletion affects erythropoiesis and results in anemia of chronic disease, a common condition in patients with AD and its comorbidities. Instead of iron supplementation, drugs, diet, or phytochemicals that improve energy supply and cellular glucose uptake should be administered to counteract hypoferremia and anemia of chronic disease.

Abstract
2-Bromo-4, 6-dinitroaniline (BDNA) is a widespread azo-dye-related hazardous pollutant. However, its reported adverse effects are limited to mutagenicity, genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and reproductive toxicity. We systematically assessed the hepatotoxicity of BDNA exposure via pathological and biochemical examinations and explored the underlying mechanisms via integrative multi-omics analyses of the transcriptome, metabolome, and microbiome in rats. After 28 days of oral administration, compared with the control group, 100 mg/kg BDNA significantly triggered hepatotoxicity, upregulated toxicity indicators (e.g., HSI, ALT, and ARG1), and induced systemic inflammation (e.g., G-CSF, MIP-2, RANTES, and VEGF), dyslipidemia (e.g., TC and TG), and bile acid (BA) synthesis (e.g., CA, GCA, and GDCA). Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed broad perturbations in gene transcripts and metabolites involved in the representative pathways of liver inflammation (e.g., Hmox1, Spi1, L-methionine, valproic acid, and choline), steatosis (e.g., Nr0b2, Cyp1a1, Cyp1a2, Dusp1, Plin3, arachidonic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid), and cholestasis (e.g., FXR/Nr1h4, Cdkn1a, Cyp7a1, and bilirubin). Microbiome analysis revealed reduced relative abundances of beneficial gut microbial taxa (e.g., Ruminococcaceae and Akkermansia muciniphila), which further contributed to the inflammatory response, lipid accumulation, and BA synthesis in the enterohepatic circulation. The observed effect concentrations here were comparable to the highly contaminated wastewaters, showcasing BDNA's hepatotoxic effects at environmentally relevant concentrations. These results shed light on the biomolecular mechanism and important role of the gut-liver axis underpinning BDNA-induced cholestatic liver disorders in vivo.

Abstract
Epimedium (EM), also known as barrenwort, is a traditional medicinal plant rich in isopentenyl flavonols, which have beneficial biological activities and can improve human and animal health, but its mechanism is still unclear. In this study, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) were used to analyse the main components of EM, and isopentenyl flavonols such as Epimedin A, B, and C as well as Icariin were the major components of EM. Meanwhile, broilers were selected as model animals to illuminate the mechanism of Epimedium isopentenyl flavonols (EMIE) on gut health. The results showed that supplementation with 200 mg/kg EM improved the immune response, increased cecum short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and lactate concentrations, and improved nutrient digestibility in broilers. In addition, 16S rRNA sequencing showed that EMIE altered the composition of cecal microbiome, increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria (Candidatus Soleaferrea and Lachbospiraceae NC2004 group and Butyricioccus) and reducing that of harmful bacteria (UBA1819, Negativibacillus, and Eisenbergiella). Metabolomic analysis identified 48 differential metabolites, of which Erosnin and Tyrosyl-Tryptophan were identified as core biomarkers. Erosnin and tyrosyl-tryptophan are potential biomarkers to evaluate the effects of EMIE. This shows that EMIE may regulate the cecum microbiota through Butyricicoccus, with changes in the relative abundance of the genera Eisenbergiella and Un. Peptostreptococcaceae affecting the serum metabolite levels of the host. EMIE is an excellent health product, and dietary isopentenyl flavonols, as bioactive components, can improve health by altering the microbiota structure and the plasma metabolite profiles. This study provides the scientific basis for the future application of EM in diets.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Obesity is a common metabolic dysfunction disease, which is highly correlated with the homeostasis of gut microbiota (GM). The dysregulation of GM on energy metabolism, immune response, insulin resistance and endogenous metabolites (e.g., short chain fatty acids and secondary bile acids) can affect the occurrence and development of obesity. Herbal medicine (HM) has particular advantages and definite therapeutic effects in the prevention and treatment of obesity, but its underlying mechanism is not fully clear. AIM OF THE STUDY In this review, the representative basic and clinical anti-obesity studies associated with the homeostasis of GM regulated by HM including active components, single herb and herbal formulae were summarized and discussed. We aim to provide a state of art reference for the mechanism research of HM in treating obesity and the further development of new anti-obesity drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The relevant information was collected by searching keywords (obesity, herbal medicine, prescriptions, mechanism, GM, short chain fatty acids, etc.) from scientific databases (CNKI, PubMed, SpringerLink, Web of Science, SciFinder, etc.). RESULTS GM dysbiosis did occur in obese patients and mice, whiles the intervention of GM could ameliorate the condition of obesity. HM (e.g., berberine, Ephedra sinica, Rehjnannia glutinosa, and Buzhong Yiqi prescription) has been proved to possess a certain regulation on GM and an explicit effect on obesity, but the exact mechanism of HM in improving obesity by regulating GM remains superficial. CONCLUSION GM is involved in HM against obesity, and GM can be a novel therapeutic target for treating obesity.

Abstract
Background: Dietary flavonoid intake is associated with a reduced risk of some cardiometabolic disorders, attributed in part to their claimed anti-inflammatory activity. Our aim was to investigate the potential association between specific urine flavonoid metabolites, liver enzymes, and inflammatory status in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, clinical and dietary data from 267 participants, aged 55 to 75 years, participating in the PREDIMED Plus study (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) were analyzed. At the baseline, spot urine samples were collected and seven urinary flavonoid metabolites were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-q-Q MS). Liver enzymes, inflammatory scores, and urinary flavonoid concentrations were inverse normally transformed. Results: Adjusted linear regression models showed an inverse association between urinary citrus flavanone concentrations and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) (all p-values <0.05). Naringenin 7'-GlcUA was significantly associated with a lower aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) (Bper 1SD = -0.14; 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.02; p-value = 0.025) and systemic inflammation index (SII) (Bper 1SD = -0.14; 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.02; p-value = 0.028). To investigate the relationship between flavanone subclasses and GGT levels, we fitted a score of citrus-flavanones, and subjects were stratified into quartiles. The highest values of the citrus-flavanone score (per 1-SD increase) were associated with lower GGT levels (Bper 1SD = -0.41; 95% CI: -0.74 to -0.07), exhibiting a linear trend across quartiles (p-trend = 0.015). Conclusion: This cross-sectional study showed that higher urinary excretion of citrus-flavanone metabolites was associated with lower GGT levels in subjects diagnosed with MetS and obesity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The increased prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sarcopenia among the elderly are facing a significant challenge to the world's health systems. Our study aims to identify the coexpressed genes in NAFLD and sarcopenia patients. METHODS We downloaded the transcriptome data of NAFLD tissue from patients, as well as muscle tissues from sarcopenia patients, from the GEO database in order to investigate the shared transcriptional regulation mechanisms between these two diseases. Then, focusing on the genes that were frequently expressed in these diseases, together with GSVA and WGCNA, we utilized a range of analysis methods to identify the main co-expressed genes in both diseases by taking intersections. We investigated these changes after learning that they mostly affected lipid metabolism and oxidative stress injury pathways. RESULTS By analyzing these genes and their interactions with transcription factors and proteins, we were able to identify 8 genes that share common patterns. From these 8 genes, we were possible to forecast potential future medicines. Our research raises the possibility of NAFLD and sarcopenia transcriptome regulatory pathways in aging populations. DISCUSSION In conclusion, a complete transcription pattern mapping was carried out in order to identify the core genes, underlying biological mechanisms, and possible therapeutic targets that regulate aging in NAFLD and sarcopenia patients. It provides novel insights and proof in favor of decreasing the increased prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly caused by NAFLD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The study aimed to explore the association of serum 25(OH)D3 and hepatic steatosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients and to determine whether the effect of vitamin D (VD) is mediated by activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) pathway. METHODS The study contained a case-control study, in vivo and in vitro experiments. A case-control study was conducted to compare serum parameters between NAFLD patients and controls and to evaluate the association of 25(OH)D3 and NAFLD. In vivo study, male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control and model groups, fed a standard chow diet and a high-fat diet (HFD), respectively, for 7 weeks to generate an NAFLD model. Then, the rats were treated with VD and a PPARα antagonist (MK886) for 7 weeks. Tissue and serum were collected and assessed by biochemical assays, morphological analysis, histological analysis, and western blot analysis. In vitro, HepG2 cells were incubated with oleic acid (OA) to induce steatosis, which was evaluated by staining. HepG2 cells were pretreated with MK886 followed by calcitriol treatment, and differences in lipid metabolism-related proteins were detected by western blot. RESULTS NAFLD patients were characterized by impaired liver function, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Serum 25(OH)D3 was negatively associated with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in NAFLD. VD deficiency was a risk factor for patients with no advanced fibrosis. Adequate VD status (25(OH)D3 >20 ng/mL) had a protective effect in patients after adjustment for confounding variables. NAFLD rats showed hyperlipidemia with severe hepatic steatosis, systematic inflammation, and lower serum 25(OH)D3. VD treatment ameliorated hepatic steatosis both in NAFLD rats and OA-induced HepG2 cells. Further, MK886 inhibited the anti-steatosis effect of VD. CONCLUSION The study revealed that an adequate VD level may act as a protective factor in NAFLD and that VD may alleviate hepatic steatosis via the PPARα signaling pathway.

Abstract
Postbiotics are rich in a variety of bioactive components, which may have beneficial effects in inhibiting hepatic lipid accumulation. In this study, we investigated the preventive effects of postbiotics (POST) prepared from Lactobacillus paracasei on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Our results showed that when mice ingested a high-fat diet (HFD) and POST simultaneously, weight gain was slowed, epididymal white fat hypertrophy and insulin resistance were suppressed, serum biochemical indicators related to blood lipid metabolism were improved, and hepatic steatosis and liver inflammation decreased. Bacterial sequencing showed that POST modulated the gut microbiota in HFD mice, increasing the relative abundance of Akkermansia and reducing the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group, Ruminiclostridium and Bilophila. Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between lipid metabolism parameters and gut microbes. Functional prediction results showed that the regulation of gut microbiota was associated with the improvement of metabolic status. The metabolomic analysis of the liver revealed that POST-regulated liver metabolic pathways, such as glycerophospholipid and ether lipid metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, some parts of amino acid metabolism, and other metabolic pathways. In addition, POST regulated the gene expression in hepatocytes at the mRNA level, thereby regulating lipid metabolism. These findings suggest that POST plays a protective role against NAFLD and may exert its efficacy by modulating the gut microbiota and liver metabolism, and these findings may be applied to related functional foods.

Abstract
Tobacco contains a large amount of bioactive ingredients which can be used as source of feed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary addition of low-nicotine tobacco (LNT) on the growth performance, blood status, cecum microbiota and metabolite composition of meat rabbits. A total of 80 Kangda meat rabbits of similar weight were assigned randomly as four groups, and three of them were supplemented with 5%, 10%, and 20% LNT, respectively, with the other one fed with basal diet as control group. Each experiment group with 20 rabbits was raised in a single cage. The experiments lasted for 40 days with a predictive period of 7 days. The results revealed that LNT supplementation had no significant effect on the growth performance, but increased the half carcass weight compared with control group. Dietary supplemention of LNT decreased the triglycerides and cholesterol content in rabbit serum, and significantly increased the plasma concentration of lymphocytes (LYM), monocytes, eosinophils, hemoglobin HGB and red blood cells. In addition, LNT supplementation significantly changed the microbial diversity and richness, and metagenomic analysis showed that LNT supplementation significantly increased Eubacterium_siraeum_group, Alistipes, Monoglobus and Marvinbryantia at genus level. Moreover, LC–MS data analysis identified a total of 308 metabolites that markedly differed after LNT addition, with 190 significantly upregulated metabolites and 118 significantly downregulated metabolites. Furthermore, the correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between the microbial difference and the rabbit growth performance. Overall, these findings provide theoretical basis and data support for the application of LNT in rabbits.
