Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) surrounds the heart and coronary arteries and is important for comprehending the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to evaluate the expressions of mitochondrial biogenesis- and CAD-related genes and miRNAs in EAT by comparing them to visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in CAD, diabetes, and obesity subgroups. METHODS In this study, a total of 93 individuals were recruited, and EAT samples (63 CAD; 30 non-CAD) and VAT samples from 65 individuals (46 CAD; 19 non-CAD) were collected. For further analysis, the study population was divided according to obesity and diabetes status. PRKAA1, PPARGC1A, SIRT1, RELA, TNFA, and miR-155-5p, let-7g-5p, miR-1247-5p, miR-326 expression levels were examined. RESULTS PRKAA1 and let-7g-5p were differentially expressed in EAT compared to VAT. TNFA expression was upregulated significantly in both tissues of CAD patients. In EAT, PRKAA1, PPARGC1A, and SIRT1 were downregulated with diabetes. Moreover, PPARGC1A expression is decreased under the condition of obesity in both tissues. EAT expressions of miR-1247-5p and miR-326 were downregulated with obesity, while miR-155-5p is decreased only in the VAT of obese. Also, miRNAs and genes were correlated with biochemical parameters and each other in EAT and VAT (p < 0.050). CONCLUSIONS The findings demonstrating distinct let-7g-5p and AMPKα1 mRNA expression between EAT and VAT underscores the importance of tissue-specific regulation in different clinical outcomes. In addition, the differential expressions of investigated genes and miRNAs highlight their responsiveness to obesity, DM, and CAD in adipose tissues.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with chronic persistent inflammation due to a pool of tissue macrophages that can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and cause neuroinflammation. The analysis of the association of CD14+CD163+ monocytes in the peripheral blood with cognitive functions in 56 obese children (mean age 11.95 (9.45; 14.45) years) was carried out. The control group consisted of 10 children (mean age 10.4 (9.3; 13.8) years). Standard deviation of the body mass index (SDS BMI) and height (SDS height) were calculated using WHO AnthroPlus software (for children of 6-19 years). Body composition was assessed using bioimpedance measurement. Mononuclear cells were isolated from whole blood by centrifugation on a Ficoll-Urografin density gradient (ρ=1.077 g/ml). The content of CD14+CD163+ monocytes in the peripheral blood was assessed by flow cytometry. To analyze cognitive functions, the intelligence coefficient (IQ) was calculated and a Russian adaptation of the Rey test was performed. We found an increase in the number of M2-polarized CD14+CD163+ monocytes in the peripheral blood with an increase in the obesity degree and in the presence of cognitive decline, as well as a negative correlation of the level of M2-polarized monocytes and IQ, taking into account the excess of visceral fat. The revealed data on the relationship of M2-polarized CD14+CD163+ peripheral blood monocytes with obesity in children and the development of neuropsychological deficiency confirm the role of peripheral visceral obesity and neuroinflammation.

Abstract
Malnutrition refers to a person's status as under- or overnourished, and it is usually associated with an inflammation status, which can subsequently imply a different health status, as the risk of infection is increased, along with a deterioration of the immune system. Children's immune systems are generally more susceptible to problems than adults. In the situation of malnutrition, because malnourished children's immune systems are compromised, they are more likely to die. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism of altered immune functioning and how it relates to starvation. Nutritional interventions have been reported as cost-effective strategies to prevent or treat the development of malnourishment, considering the link between food intake and health, especially in children, and also the susceptibility of this population to diseases and how their health status during childhood might affect their long-term physiological growth. The ingestion of specific nutrients (e.g., vitamins or oligoelements) has been reported to contribute to the proper functioning of children's immune systems. In this review, we aim to describe the basis of malnutrition and how this is linked to the immune system, considering the role of nutrients in the modulation of the immune system and the risk of infection that can occur in these situations in children, as well as to identify nutritional interventions to improve their health.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined by the concurrence of different metabolic conditions: obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Its incidence has been increasingly rising over the past decades and has become a global health problem. MetS has deleterious consequences on the central nervous system (CNS) and neurological development. MetS can last several years or be lifelong, affecting the CNS in different ways and treatments can help manage condition, though there is no known cure. The early childhood years are extremely important in neurodevelopment, which extends beyond, encompassing a lifetime. Neuroplastic changes take place all life through - childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age - are highly sensitive to environmental input. Environmental factors have an important role in the etiopathogenesis and treatment of MetS, so environmental enrichment (EE) stands as a promising non-invasive therapeutic approach. While the EE paradigm has been designed for animal housing, its principles can be and actually are applied in cognitive, sensory, social, and physical stimulation programs for humans. Here, we briefly review the central milestones in neurodevelopment at each life stage, along with the research studies carried out on how MetS affects neurodevelopment at each life stage and the contributions that EE models can provide to improve health over the lifespan.

Abstract
The prevalence of pediatric obesity is rising rapidly worldwide, and "omic" approaches are helpful in investigating the molecular pathophysiology of obesity. This work aims to identify transcriptional differences in the subcutaneous adipose tissue (scAT) of children with overweight (OW), obesity (OB), or severe obesity (SV) compared with those of normal weight (NW). Periumbilical scAT biopsies were collected from 20 male children aged 1-12 years. The children were stratified into the following four groups according to their BMI z-scores: SV, OB, OW, and NW. scAT RNA-Seq analyses were performed, and a differential expression analysis was conducted using the DESeq2 R package. A pathways analysis was performed to gain biological insights into gene expression. Our data highlight the significant deregulation in both coding and non-coding transcripts in the SV group when compared with the NW, OW, and OB groups. A KEGG pathway analysis showed that coding transcripts were mainly involved in lipid metabolism. A GSEA analysis revealed the upregulation of lipid degradation and metabolism in SV vs. OB and SV vs. OW. Bioenergetic processes and the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids were upregulated in SV compared with OB, OW, and NW. In conclusion, we report for the first time that a significant transcriptional deregulation occurs in the periumbilical scAT of children with severe obesity compared with those of normal weight or those with overweight or mild obesity.

Abstract
A relationship between metabolic syndrome and cognitive impairment has been evidenced across research; however, conflicting results have been observed. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3179 adults older than 60 from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to analyze the relationship between metabolic syndrome and cognitive impairment. In our results, we found that adults with abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol had 4.39 fewer points in the CERAD immediate recall test than adults without any metabolic syndrome factors [Beta = -4.39, SE = 1.32, 17.75 (1.36) vs. 22.14 (0.76)]. In addition, people with this metabolic syndrome combination exhibited 2.39 fewer points in the CERAD delayed recall test than those without metabolic syndrome criteria [Beta = -2.39, SE = 0.46, 4.32 (0.49) vs. 6.71 (0.30)]. It was also found that persons with high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and low HDL-cholesterol levels reached 4.11 points less in the animal fluency test than people with no factors [Beta = -4.11, SE = 1.55, 12.67 (2.12) vs. 16.79 (1.35)]. These findings suggest that specific metabolic syndrome combinations are essential predictors of cognitive impairment. In this study, metabolic syndrome combinations that included obesity, fasting hyperglycemia, high triglycerides, and low HDL-cholesterol were among the most frequent criteria observed.
