Selectively Producing Acetic Acid via Boric Acid-Catalyzed Fast Pyrolysis of Woody Biomass

Boron-Nitrogen-Edged Biomass-Derived Carbon: A Multifunctional Approach for Colorimetric Detection of H2O2, Flame Retardancy, and Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Enhancing the concentration and type of nitrogen (N) dopants within the Sp2-carbon domain of carbon recycled from biomass sources is an efficient approach to mimic CNT, GO, and rGO to activate oxidants such as H2O2, excluding toxic chemicals and limiting reaction steps. However, monitoring the kind and concentration of N species in the Sp2-C domain is unlikely with thermal treatments only. A high temperature for graphitization reduces N moieties, leading to low electron density. This inhibits H2O2 adsorption and activation on catalyst surfaces. In this study, coffee waste (CW) is converted into B, N-doped biochar (BXNbY) using boric acid-assisted pyrolysis (H3BO3 mass = X and carbonization temperature = Y) under N2 to overcome the challenge. The B dopant regulates the concentration and type of N, provides Lewis's acid sites, and converts graphitic-N to pyridine-N in BXNbY. The optimized B3Nb900 exhibits excellent colorimetric sensing performance toward H2O2 with a low detection limit (36.9 nM) and high selectivity in the presence of many interferences and milk samples due to high pyridinic-N and Sp2 domain sizes. Interestingly, B enhances other properties of N-containing CW-derived carbon and introduces self-extinguishing and tribopositive properties. Hence, BXNbY-coated polyurethane foam shows excellent flame retardancy and energy harvesting performance.

Improvement of Fire Resistance and Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) Composite Prepared from Combination of Active Nano Filler of Modified Pumice and Commercial Active Fillers

Glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites have great potential to replace metal components in vehicles by maintaining their mechanical properties and improving fire resistance. Ease of form, anti-corrosion, lightweight, fast production cycle, durability and high strength-to-weight ratio are the advantages of GFRP compared to conventional materials. The transition to the use of plastic materials can be performed by increasing their mechanical, thermal and fire resistance properties. This research aims to improve the fire resistance of GFRP composite and maintain its strength by a combination of pumice-based active nano filler and commercial active filler. The nano active filler of pumice particle (nAFPP) was obtained by the sol-gel method. Aluminum trihydroxide (ATH), sodium silicate (SS) and boric acid (BA) were commercial active fillers that were used in this study. The GFRP composite was prepared by a combination of woven roving (WR) and chopped strand mat (CSM) glass fibers with an unsaturated polyester matrix. The composite specimens were produced using a press mold method for controlling the thickness of specimens. Composites were tested with a burning test apparatus, flexural bending machine and Izod impact tester. Composites were also analyzed by SEM, TGA, DSC, FT-IR spectroscopy and macro photographs. The addition of nAFPP and reducing the amount of ATH increased ignition time significantly and decreased the burning rate of specimens. The higher content of nAFPP significantly increased the flexural and impact strength. TGA analysis shows that higher ATH content had a good contribution to reducing specimen weight loss. It is also strengthened by the lower exothermic of the specimen with higher ATH content. The use of SS and BA inhibited combustion by forming charcoal or protective film; however, excessive use of them produced porosity and lowered mechanical properties.

Boron-Doped Pine-Cone Carbon With 3D Interconnected Porosity for Use as an Anode for Potassium-Ion Batteries With Long Life Cycle

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have received widespread attention as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries because of their low cost and abundance of potassium. However, the poor kinetic performance and severe volume changes during charging/discharging due to the large radius of potassium leading to low capacity and rapid decay. Therefore, development of anode materials with sufficient space and active sites for potassium ion deintercalation and desorption is necessary to ensure structural stability and good electrochemical activity. This study prepared boron-doped pine-cone carbon (BZPC) with 3D interconnected hierarchical porous in ZnCl₂ molten-salt by calcination under high temperature. The hierarchical porous structure promoted the penetration of the electrolyte, improved charge-carrier diffusion, alleviated volume changes during cycling, and increased the number of micropores available for adsorbing potassium ions. In addition, due to B doping, the BZPC material possessed abundant defects and active centers, and a wide interlayer distance, which enhanced the adsorption of K ions and promoted their intercalation and diffusion. When used as the anode of a KIB, BZPC provided a high reversible capacity (223.8 mAh g⁻¹ at 50 mA g⁻¹), excellent rate performance, and cycling stability (115.9 mAh g⁻¹ after 2000 cycles at 1 A g⁻¹).

On-Line Thermally Induced Evolved Gas Analysis: An Update-Part 1: EGA-MS

Advances in on-line thermally induced evolved gas analysis (OLTI-EGA) have been systematically reported by our group to update their applications in several different fields and to provide useful starting references. The importance of an accurate interpretation of the thermally-induced reaction mechanism which involves the formation of gaseous species is necessary to obtain the characterization of the evolved products. In this review, applications of Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) performed by on-line coupling heating devices to mass spectrometry (EGA-MS), are reported. Reported references clearly demonstrate that the characterization of the nature of volatile products released by a substance subjected to a controlled temperature program allows us to prove a supposed reaction or composition, either under isothermal or under heating conditions. Selected 2019, 2020, and 2021 references are collected and briefly described in this review.
