Abstract
This study aims to review clinical trials investigating dietary or nutritional interventions for Parkinson's Disease (PD) and identify potential research gaps. A PubMed search yielded 3378 results, and after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 38 studies were selected. Of these, 13 focused on interventions with potential neuroprotective effects against PD, 18 examined symptom improvement, and 7 explored their relationship to antiparkinsonian medication. Most studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and demonstrated promising results. However, they were often limited by small sample sizes and short durations. Large-scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled RCTs are necessary to further investigate the effects of dietary and nutritional interventions in PD. Other nutrients with promising results in preclinical research should be further evaluated in clinical trials. Moreover, research should prioritize dietary pattern interventions, like the Mediterranean and ketogenic diets, while closely monitoring patient adherence to these approaches. Lastly, future research should further explore the role of gut microbiota and its potential pathogenic involvement in PD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Globally, approximately 2.2 billion people suffer from visual impairments or blindness. Dietary patterns are closely associated with the prevalence of multiple ocular diseases. This study aimed to explore the association between Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and ocular disorders. METHODS The data were derived from 1706 subjects aged 40 years and older who participated in the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which utilized undersampling techniques. Trained staff interviewed participants to gather information about their dietary habits using the 24-h diet recall method. The CDAI, incorporating six antioxidants, was then computed using a validated method. Eye diseases were diagnosed through a combination of examinations and questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, higher CDAI quartiles (Q4) were significantly associated with reduced odds of diabetic retinopathy (OR: 0.55, P = 0.041), cataracts (OR: 0.37, P < 0.001), glaucoma (OR: 0.48, P = 0.003), and macular degeneration (OR: 0.19, P < 0.001). Carotenoids showed a significant negative correlation with ocular diseases, diabetic retinopathy (OR: 0.57, P < 0.001), cataracts (OR: 0.75, P = 0.014), glaucoma (OR: 0.59, P < 0.001) and macular degeneration (OR: 0.55, P < 0.001). Compared to the lowest quartile (Q1), higher quartiles (Q4) of zinc intake were associated with lower odds of DR (OR: 0.32, P < 0.001) and glaucoma (OR: 0.73, P = 0.001). Similarly, Q4 of vitamin C intake were associated with lower odds of cataracts (OR: 0.70, P = 0.001) and glaucoma (OR: 0.71, P = 0.003) compared to the Q1. CONCLUSION Higher CDAI scores are correlated with a decreased odds of ocular diseases, suggesting that an antioxidant-rich dietary pattern may be associated with better ocular health. Understanding these correlations could contribute to the development of preventive strategies and intervention measures for ocular diseases.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is considered a common underlying mechanism in many retinal degenerative diseases and is often associated with inflammation. The use of dietary supplements containing Saffron has beneficial effects in ocular diseases, though the molecular mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we investigated how Saffron can exert protective effects against oxidative damage in retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19) and whether its combination with Elderberry and Melilotus may have additive beneficial effects. ARPE-19 cells were pretreated with Saffron alone or in a mix containing Saffron, Elderberry and Melilotus, then exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 3 h. Afterwards, we evaluated cell viability, oxidative stress and inflammatory status. Our results showed that H2O2 reduced cell viability and total glutathione levels, while increasing caspase-3, caspase-1 and LDH activity. Moreover, H2O2 triggered ROS production, glutathione oxidation and IL-1β secretion. Pretreatments with Saffron alone or with the mix counteract these damaging effects by improving cell viability, reducing oxidative stress and enhancing SOD2 expression. Pretreatment with the mix activated the NRF2 pathway and was more effective than Saffron alone in preventing caspase-1 activation. These findings suggest that the combination of Saffron, Elderberry and Melilotus could have therapeutic potential in the prevention and treatment of retinal degenerative diseases.

Abstract
AIM To assess the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and prevalence of glaucoma among individuals aged 40y and above in the United States. METHODS Participants were drawn from 2 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2005-2008) for a cross-sectional study. DII was calculated from 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire conducted by experienced researchers and data analyzed in R according to the NHANES user guide, "Stratified Multi-stage Probability Sampling". The relationship between DII and glaucoma was evaluated by multi-factor logistic regression analysis and the existence of a non-linear association examined by restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. RESULTS A total of 5359 subjects were included and the cross-sectional analysis weighted to represent the US population of 109 million. DII was elevated in glaucoma patients (P<0.001) and smoking and alcohol use contributed to significant differences (P<0.001). DII correlated negatively with Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 (Spearman rank correlation coefficient, r=-0.49). RCS analysis showed a linear relationship between DII and glaucoma risk (P of non-linear relationship =0.575). CONCLUSION An increased DII is strongly associated with high risk of glaucoma and diet-induced inflammation should be controlled to delay glaucoma progression.

Abstract
One of the most pressing challenges facing society today is the rising prevalence of physical and cognitive frailty. This geriatric condition makes older adults more vulnerable to disability, illness, and a heightened risk of mortality. In this scenario, Parkinson's disease (PD) and geriatric frailty, which share several common characteristics, are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide, underscoring the urgent need for innovative strategies. Nutraceuticals are naturally occurring bioactive compounds contained in foods, offering health benefits over and above essential nutrition. By examining the literature from the past decade, this review highlights how nutraceuticals can act as complementary therapies, addressing key processes, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuroprotection. Notably, the antioxidant action of nutraceuticals appears particularly beneficial in regard to PD and geriatric frailty. For instance, antioxidant-rich nutraceuticals may mitigate the oxidative damage linked to levodopa therapy in PD, potentially reducing the side effects and enhancing treatment sustainability. Similarly, the antioxidant effects of nutraceuticals may amplify the benefits of physical activity, enhancing muscle function, cognitive health, and resilience, thereby reducing the risk of frailty. This review proposes a holistic approach integrating nutraceuticals with exercise, pharmacotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments. It promises to transform the management of ARD, prolong life, and improve the quality of life and well-being of older people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Dry eye disease (DED) significantly impairs quality of life, affecting physical, social, and psychological well-being, as well as reducing workplace productivity. While lutein and zeaxanthin supplements have been shown to improve ocular health, existing research often overlooks the efficacy of lower dosages and shorter durations of supplementation. This study investigated the effects of combined supplementation with lutein, zeaxanthin, and elderberries in 110 voluntary participants through a randomized controlled trial. METHODS Participants took 6 mg of lutein and 1 mg of zeaxanthin, along with 100 mg elderberry extract once daily for a duration of 20 days. Ocular health was assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), while immune status was evaluated with the Immune Status Questionnaire (ISQ). RESULTS Results showed that combined supplementation significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the OSDI scores in the intervention group from 38.15 ± 11.14 to 18.26 ± 5.57, reflecting a 52.2% reduction. A similar trend was observed with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), indicating significant (p < 0.05) improvement from 5.31 ± 1.62 to 6.73 ± 1.74, equivalent to a 26.7% improvement. Although the intervention group showed a 15.9% improvement in ISQ scores by the study's end, this was not significantly different from the placebo group, suggesting that higher dosages or longer durations may be needed to observe a meaningful effect. Additionally, findings from the Food Frequency Questionnaire revealed that the average dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin among participants was only 663.49 µg, equating to just 5.5% of the suggested optimal daily intake. This low consumption is concerning, as it is inversely correlated with the risk of ocular diseases. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, these findings support the use of combined supplementation as an adjuvant approach to improving ocular health.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the role of melatonin in oxidative stress-induced injury on retinal ganglion cells and the underlying mechanisms. The immortalized RGC-5 cells were treated with H2O2 to induce oxidative injury. Cell viability was measured by Cell Counting Kit-8, and apoptosis was determined by flow cytometry and western blot assays. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were examined to evaluate oxidative stress levels. In addition, Thioredoxin-1 (Trx1) was silenced in RGC-5 cells using small interfering RNA followed by signaling pathway examination to explore the underlying mechanisms of melatonin in alleviating oxidative injury. Melatonin pre-treatment significantly alleviated H2O2-induced apoptosis in RGC-5 cells. Melatonin also markedly reversed the upregulation of cleaved-caspase 3, cleaved-caspase 9, and Bax expression and downregulation of Bcl-2 expression induced by H2O2. Further analyses presented that melatonin significantly attenuated the increase of ROS, LDH, and MDA levels in RGC-5 cells after H2O2 treatment. Melatonin also abolished the downregulated expression of Superoxide dismutase type 1, Trx1, and Thioredoxin reductase 1, and the reduced activity of thioredoxin reductase in RGC-5 cells after H2O2 treatment. Notably, Trx1 knockdown significantly mitigated the protective effect of melatonin in alleviating H2O2-induced apoptosis and oxidative stress, while administration of compound C, a common inhibitor of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling, partially reversed the effect of Trx1 silencing, thereby ameliorating the apoptosis and oxidative injury induced by H2O2 in RGC-5 cells. Melatonin could significantly alleviate oxidative stress-induced injury of retinal ganglion cells via modulating Trx1-mediated JNK signaling pathway.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the associations between circulating micronutrients (vitamins A, C, D, E, and carotenoids) and the risk of myopia. Methods A total of 1,620 adolescents from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations of micronutrients with myopia and high myopia. Restricted cubic spline analysis was employed to assess the potential nonlinear relationships. Results Among the 1,620 adolescents, 549 were diagnosed with myopia. After adjusting for multiple covariates, only cis-β-carotene was significantly associated with the risk of myopia (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.03-1.39) and high myopia (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.03-2.03). No significant associations were found between vitamins A, D, E, C, α-carotene, trans-β-carotene, lutein zeaxanthin, and myopia. No nonlinear relationships were observed between any of the micronutrients and myopia. Conclusion Cis-β-carotene is significantly associated with an increased risk of myopia and high myopia. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential impact of cis-β-carotene on ocular health.

Abstract
Worldwide, the number of individuals suffering from visual impairment, as well as those affected by blindness, is about 600 million and it will further increase in the coming decades. These diseases also seriously affect the quality of life in working-age individuals. Beyond the characterization of metabolic, genetic, and environmental factors related to ocular pathologies, it is important to verify how lifestyle may participate in the induction of the molecular pathways underlying these diseases. On the other hand, scientific studies are also contributing to investigations as to whether lifestyle could intervene in modulating pathophysiological cellular responses, including the production of metabolites and neurohormonal factors, through the intake of natural compounds capable of interfering with molecular mechanisms that lead to ocular diseases. Nutraceuticals are promising in ameliorating pathophysiological complications of ocular disease such as inflammation and neurodegeneration. Moreover, it is important to characterize the nutritional patterns and/or natural compounds that may be beneficial against certain ocular diseases. The adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) is proposed as a promising intervention for the prevention and amelioration of several eye diseases. Several characteristic compounds and micronutrients of MeDi, including vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids, and omega-3 fatty acids, are proposed as adjuvants against several ocular diseases. In this review, we focus on studies that analyze the effects of MeDi in ameliorating diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. The analysis of knowledge in this field is requested in order to provide direction on recommendations for nutritional interventions aimed to prevent and ameliorate ocular diseases.

Abstract
Treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma has centered on the lowering of intraocular pressure that damages the optic nerve; however, this strategy is not uniformly successful, especially in normal tension glaucoma, and there is interest in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other neuroprotective strategies. Vegetarian diets are known to be rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components and have a number of established health benefits. Thus, it would be reasonable to assume that vegetarian diets would be beneficial in glaucoma, but this approach has not been well studied. We examine the possible role of vegetarian diets and their components in the incidence and progression of glaucoma.

Abstract
Background and aim Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining and improving vision health. However, little is known about dietary intake habits and their correlation with vision health among adults in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The present survey was aimed to assess dietary patterns and vision health among Saudi adults and to determine the association between dietary patterns and vision health. Methods The present analytical study was carried out among 1,234 Saudi adults in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Qassim regions of KSA. We used the Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) and the diet quality screener (DQS). We applied Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests to determine the association between vision function score and demographic characteristics. Furthermore, the Spearman correlation test was used to determine the relationship between the DQS and the NEI VFQ-25. Results Of the studied population, the highest score obtained through the NEI VFQ-25 was in the social function domain (mean ± SD = 76.64 ± 18.63), followed by the general vision domain (mean ± SD = 75.21 ± 15.16) and was negatively correlated with age. Regarding dietary patterns, the intake of lean protein sources per week was the highest, with a mean intake of 4.17 days per week, followed by that of whole grains and milk or dairy products, with a mean intake of around four days per week. There was a significant correlation between various dietary intakes and visual function scores. Conclusion The present survey underscores the significance of understanding regional dietary patterns and their implications for vision health. Furthermore, our study's findings indicate a need for targeted nutritional intervention measures to improve the vision health of this population.

Abstract
As the most serious of the many worse new pathological changes caused by diabetes, there are many risk factors for the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). They mainly include hyperglycemia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and so on. Among them, hyperglycemia is the most critical cause, and plays a vital role in the pathological changes of DR. High-sucrose diets (HSDs) lead to elevated blood glucose levels in vivo, which, through oxidative stress, inflammation, the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), cause plenty of pathological damages to the retina and ultimately bring about loss of vision. The existing therapies for DR primarily target the terminal stage of the disease, when irreversible visual impairment has appeared. Therefore, early prevention is particularly critical. The early prevention of DR-related vision loss requires adjustments to dietary habits, mainly by reducing sugar intake. This article primarily discusses the risk factors, pathophysiological processes and molecular mechanisms associated with the development of DR caused by HSDs. It aims to raise awareness of the crucial role of diet in the occurrence and progression of DR, promote timely changes in dietary habits, prevent vision loss and improve the quality of life. The aim is to make people aware of the importance of diet in the occurrence and progression of DR. According to the dietary modification strategies that we give, patients can change their poor eating habits in a timely manner to avoid theoretically avoidable retinopathy and obtain an excellent prognosis.

Abstract
Objectives Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic and degenerative disease of the retina that leads to irreversible blindness. There is no proven effective treatment for early AMD and advanced AMD. Mediterranean diet (MD) has been linked to reducing the risk or delaying the progression of AMD. Therefore, in this study, we aim to investigate the potential of MD as a modifiable risk factor for AMD. Materials and Methods A systematic search was performed in three databases: PubMed, EBSCO host, and Proquest. We search for studies that determine the association of MD in AMD. Then, we pooled the data for meta-analysis. Results Eight studies were included in our systematic review. Seven studies were included for meta-analysis. Subjects with medium-high (hazard ratio [HR] 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.75-0.90) adherence to the MD showed a reduced risk of developing AMD. Moreover, medium adherence AMD shows a significant and inverse relationship with the progression to advanced AMD (HR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.81-0.93). Although it is still inconsistent, the reduction appears stronger for geographic atrophy than for neovascular AMD. Conclusion Adhering to the MD, particularly at a medium to high level, appears to confer a protective effect against AMD. The sub-analysis demonstrates even that there is a protective effect associated with moderate adherence against advanced AMD. The presence of considerable heterogeneity within the results warrants cautious interpretation. Further research is needed to enhance our understanding.

Abstract
In recent years, although life expectancy has increased significantly, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to pose a significant threat to the health of the global population. Therefore, eating habits have been recognized as key modifiable factors that influence people's health and well-being. For this reason, it is interesting to study dietary patterns, since the human diet is a complex mixture of macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds, and can modulate multiple physiological processes, including immune function, the metabolism, and inflammation. To ensure that the data we acquired were current and relevant, we searched primary and secondary sources, including scientific journals, bibliographic indexes, and databases in the last 15 years with the most relevant articles. After this search, we observed that all the recent research on NCDs suggests that diet is a critical factor in shaping an individual's health outcomes. Thus, cardiovascular, metabolic, mental, dental, and visual health depends largely on the intake, habits and patterns, and nutritional behaviors. A diet high in processed and refined foods, added sugars, and saturated fats can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases. On the other hand, a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and a high adherence to Mediterranean diet can improve health's people.

Abstract
Plant-based beverages (PBB) market is largely growing. In this study, 136 beverages made of soy, oat, almond, rice, tigernut, and others (mixtures of various plant materials), from the Spanish market were evaluated through labelling information. Energy value and fat content were intermediate between skimmed and whole cow milk; while fatty acids profile was quite different. Carbohydrate content was usually higher than cow milk, and highly dependent on the addition of sugars. All products provided some dietary fibre. With the exception of soy-based drinks, samples presented lower protein and calcium content than milk (1/3 samples studied were Ca-fortified), and 23% were vitamin D enriched. The claim "No added sugars" was in more than 50% samples. A right labelling and nutritional education of consumers is essential to make adequate choices, since the appearing of many claims is not always indicative of a better-quality product. Plant-based beverages cannot be considered as an alternative to milk, but as a different product, with their own nutritional and functional entity. Their inclusion in a diversified balanced diet can provide interesting functional components, such as soluble fibre or unsaturated fatty acids (mainly soybean and almond drink), which can help improve the health status of the population.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet is recognized as one of the healthiest available dietary patterns. This perception results from its beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system and, also, on hypertension, diabetes, and cancer compared with other diets. Its impact on the course of diabetes is assessed in the available scientific literature; however, little information is available about its impact on diabetic retinopathy. The MD is characterized mainly by the consumption of fish, seafood, foods of plant origin, and fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also recommended to consume legumes, which are a source of folic acid, magnesium, iron, and dietary fiber. High consumption of nuts and unrefined grains is also recommended in the MD. Marine fish provide polyunsaturated acids from the omega-3 group. Olive oil plays a very important role, especially olive oil obtained from mechanical pressing. Additionally, olive oil contains vitamins E, K, and polyphenols. Polyphenols, which are present in a diverse range of vegetables, fruits, and seeds, have the ability to decrease oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Resveratrol is naturally found in grape skins and seeds, as well as in peanuts and berries, and is a constituent of red wine. Resveratrol can inhibit increased vascular leakage and loss of pericytes and regulate the level of VEGF protein in the retina, thus inhibiting the development of DR. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive oil may be correlated with a lower risk of diabetic retinopathy. This paper presents the definition of the Mediterranean diet and its influence on the course of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Many eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and cataracts are preventable and treatable with lifestyle. The objective of this review is to assess the most recent research on the ideal dietary approach to prevent or support the treatment of DR, AMD, and cataracts, as well as to construct a food pyramid that makes it simple for people who are at risk of developing these pathologies to decide what to eat. The food pyramid presented here proposes what should be consumed every day: 3 portions of low glycemic index (GI) grains (for fiber and zinc content), 5 portions (each portion: ≥200 g/day) of fruits and vegetables (spinach, broccoli, zucchini cooked, green leafy vegetables, orange, kiwi, grapefruit for folic acid, vitamin C, and lutein/zeaxanthin content, at least ≥42 μg/day, are to be preferred), extra virgin olive (EVO) oil (almost 20 mg/day for vitamin E and polyphenols content), nuts or oil seeds (20-30 g/day, for zinc content, at least ≥15.8 mg/day); weekly: fish (4 portions, for omega-3 content and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 0.35-1.4 g/day), white meat (3 portions for vitamin B12 content), legumes (2 portions for vegetal proteins), eggs (2 portions for lutein/zeaxanthin content), light cheeses (2 portions for vitamin B6 content), and almost 3-4 times/week microgreen and spices (saffron and curcumin). At the top of the pyramid, there are two pennants: one green, which indicates the need for personalized supplementation (if daily requirements cannot be met through diet, omega-3, and L-methylfolate supplementation), and one red, which indicates that certain foods are prohibited (salt and sugar). Finally, 3-4 times per week, 30-40 min of aerobic and resistance exercises are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) in the Uyghur population in Hotan, Xinjiang, and to identify risk factors associated with this disorder. METHODS Between January and September of 2020, 5,121 Uyghur subjects aged 18 - 98 years from 105 villages were selected and studied cross-sectionally using a whole-group random sampling method in the Hotan area, Xinjiang, China. The Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire was used to collect subjective symptoms of DED and examine tear-film break-up times. The break up time and Schirmer's test were used to collect objective signs, to determine the prevalence of DED and its risk factors. RESULTS A total of 5,121 subjects aged 18 - 98 years were recruited from the Uyghur population in the Hotan region of Xinjiang, China, for eye examinations and questionnaire surveys. A total of 40.6% (2,078/5,121) were diagnosed with DED, of which 38.3% were male and 41.9% were female. The prevalence of DED was the highest in subjects ≥ 65 years of age, with 47.8% in males and 53.3% in females. The lowest occurrence was in subjects 18 - 44 years of age, with 32.5% in males and 33.7% in females. Older age, tea drinking, and staying awake late were risk factors affecting the severity of DED prevalence (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in sex, presence of diabetes, or presence of hypertension (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of DED in the study population was 40.6%, and its prevalence was higher in females, when compared with males. The prevalence of dry eye also increased with age, and at an advanced age, female sex, smoking, staying awake late, and not exercising were risk factors for DED.

Abstract
There is an increasing interest in food science for high-quality natural products with a distinct geographical origin, such as saffron. In this work, the excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and synchronous fluorescence were used for the first time to geographically discriminate between Moroccan saffron from Taroudant, Ouarzazate, and Azilal. Moreover, to differentiate between Afghan, Iranian, and Moroccan saffron, a unique fingerprint was assigned to each sample by visualizing the EEM physiognomy. Moreover, principal component analysis (LDA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were successfully applied to classify the synchronous spectra of samples. High fluorescence intensities were registered for Ouarzazate and Taroudant saffron. Yet, the Azilal saffron was distinguished by its low intensities. Furthermore, Moroccan, Afghan, and Iranian saffron were correctly assigned to their origins using PCA and LDA for different offsets (Δλ) (20-250 nm) such that the difference in the fluorescence composition of the three countries' saffron was registered in the following excitation/emission ranges: 250-325 nm/300-480 nm and 360-425 nm/500-550 nm. These regions are characterized by the high polyphenolic content of Moroccan saffron and the important composition of Afghan saffron, including vitamins and terpenoids. However, weak intensities of these compounds were found in Iranian saffron. Furthermore, a substantial explained variance (97-100% for PC1 and PC2) and an important classification rate (70-90%) were achieved. Thus, the non-destructive applied methodology of discrimination was rapid, straightforward, reliable, and accurate.

Abstract
Dietary shifts in populations undergoing rapid economic transitions have been proposed as partly contributing toward the rapid intergenerational rise in myopia prevalence; however, empirical evidence of the effect of dietary factors on myopia is limited. This study investigated the association between dietary factors and incident myopia in Chinese children aged 10-11 years. We evaluated dietary habits using a 72-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among 7423 children. Myopic status was assessed using the "General Personal Information Questionnaire". Principal component analysis was used to extract dietary patterns and investigate their association with myopia. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants with the highest adherence to dietary pattern A (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.66-0.92, p for trend = 0.007) and dietary pattern C (95% CI: 0.58-0.80, p for trend < 0.001) had a lower risk of myopia than participants with the least adherence. Both of these dietary patterns are characterized by high consumption of meats, aquatic product, dairy and its products, eggs, legumes, vegetables, fruits, grains, and potatoes. Our findings suggest that other environmental factors, such as those related to the dietary environment, may contribute to the development of myopia. These findings can serve as a reference for diet-related primary prevention of myopia.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders are a widespread cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, characterized by neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal depletion. They include selective malfunction and progressive loss of neurons, glial cells, and neural networks in the brain and spinal cord. There is an urgent need to develop new and more effective therapeutic strategies to combat these devastating diseases because, today, there is no treatment that can cure degenerative diseases; however, we have many symptomatic treatments. Current nutritional approaches are beginning to reflect a fundamental change in our understanding of health. The Mediterranean diet may have a protective effect on the neurodegenerative process because it is rich in antioxidants, fiber, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Increasing knowledge regarding the impact of diet on regulation at the genetic and molecular levels is changing the way we consider the role of nutrition, resulting in new dietary strategies. Natural products, thanks to their bioactive compounds, have recently undergone extensive exploration and study for their therapeutic potential for a variety of diseases. Targeting simultaneous multiple mechanisms of action and a neuroprotection approach with the diet could prevent cell death and restore function to damaged neurons. For these reasons, this review will be focused on the therapeutic potential of natural products and the associations between the Mediterranean-style diet (MD), neurodegenerative diseases, and markers and mechanisms of neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Inflammation is an important driver of dry eye disease (DED) pathogenesis. An initial insult that results in the loss of tear film homeostasis can initiate a nonspecific innate immune response that leads to a chronic and self-sustaining inflammation of the ocular surface, which results in classic symptoms of dry eye. This initial response is followed by a more prolonged adaptive immune response, which can perpetuate and aggravate inflammation and result in a vicious cycle of chronic inflammatory DED. Effective anti-inflammatory therapies can help patients exit this cycle, and effective diagnosis of inflammatory DED and selection of the most appropriate treatment are therefore key to successful DED management and treatment. This review explores the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune and inflammatory components of DED, and examines the evidence base for the use of currently available topical treatment options. These agents include topical steroid therapy, calcineurin inhibitors, T cell integrin antagonists, antibiotics, autologous serum/plasma therapy, and omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplements.

Abstract
Red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) is a large shelf species native to the Pacific Ocean. Due to its high commercial value, this species was introduced into the Barents Sea, where it has formed a new population that now supports a stable commercial fishery. Information on fatty acid profiles in different tissues of the Barents Sea P. camtschaticus is scarce. For this reason, the gonads of red king crabs collected at a coastal site in the Barents Sea during the summer were analyzed for fatty acid composition by gas-liquid chromatography. The proportions of total saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in the ovaries of P. camtschaticus were 25.9 ± 2.0%, 22.5 ± 2.3%, and 51.6 ± 2.5%, respectively; in the testes, these levels accounted for 35.1 ± 5.7%, 19.1 ± 2.0%, and 45.8 ± 4.5%, respectively. Fatty acid profiles were similar in larger and smaller red king crabs and crabs with old and new shells. Concentrations of fatty acids were higher in ovaries compared to testes, reflecting higher reproductive efforts in female red king crabs. High levels of docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acids detected in the ovaries of red king crabs from the Barents Sea indicate that these gonads can be a good alternative source for these fatty acids in the human diet and/or for extracting important fatty acids for use in the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of inherited retinal dystrophy characterized by the progressive loss of vision. It is a rare disease. Despite being a genetic disease, its progression is influenced by oxidative damage and chemokines and cytokines released by the activated immune cells (e.g., macrophages or microglia). The role of oxidative stress is very important in the retina. Rods are the main consumers of oxygen (O2), so they are constantly exposed to oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. According to the oxidative hypothesis, after rod death in the early stages of the disease, O2 would accumulate in large quantities in the retina, producing hyperoxia and favoring the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species that would cause oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA, exacerbating the process of retinal degeneration. Evidence shows alterations in the antioxidant-oxidant state in patients and in animal models of RP. In recent years, therapeutic approaches aimed at reducing oxidative stress have emerged as useful therapies to slow down the progression of RP. We focus this review on oxidative stress and its relationship with the progression of RP.

Abstract
Environmental pollution, inadequate eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles have led to a tremendous increase in ocular diseases worldwide. Given the costly treatments that are currently available for the most common and threatening eye diseases (such as cataract, dry eye disorder, or diabetic retinopathy), curing these diseases or preventing refractive errors by taking nutraceuticals and natural compounds that are present in our daily diet is a very valuable intervention. The eyes are the most important part of our visual system and require micronutrients such as vitamins, carotenoids, trace metals, and omega-3 fatty acids in order to function properly and to protect themselves against light-induced and age-mediated degenerative disorders. The Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) has been in the limelight since the 1980s because of the several health benefits it provides, including eye health. MedDiet is characterized by the consumption of small amounts of red meat, while emphasizing the intake of fish, eggs, nuts, legumes, citrus fruits, green vegetables, olives and their derivatives, especially olive oil, and dairy products in a proportionate manner, in order to achieve the maximum health benefits. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties of these foods - both when used as an ingredient in the dietary regime or as a source of nutritional supplements - have shown promising results in the management of chronic degenerative ocular diseases, both in animal models and in human subjects. In this chapter, we will focus on the importance of MedDiet and natural compounds for the visual system and its role in slowing down age-related ocular degeneration.

Abstract
Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2-year nutritional intervention with antioxidant nutraceuticals on the visual function of RP patients. Secondly, we assessed how nutritional intervention affected ocular and systemic redox status. We carried out a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Thirty-one patients with RP participated in the study. RP patients randomly received either a mixture of nutraceuticals (NUT) containing folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin A, zinc, copper, selenium, lutein, and zeaxanthin or placebo daily for 2 years. At baseline and after 2-year of the nutritional supplementation, visual function, dietetic-nutritional evaluations, serum concentration of nutraceuticals, plasma and aqueous humor concentration of several markers of redox status and inflammation were assessed. Retinal function and structure were assessed by multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG), spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and automated visual field (VF) tests. Nutritional status was estimated with validated questionnaires. Total antioxidant capacity, extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, protein carbonyl adducts (CAR) content, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formation (as indicator of lipid peroxidation), metabolites of the nitric oxide (NOX) and cytokine (interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha) concentrations were assessed by biochemical and immunological techniques in aqueous humor or/and blood. Bayesian approach was performed to determine the probability of an effect. Region of practical equivalence (ROPE) was used. At baseline, Bayesian analysis revealed a high probability of an altered ocular redox status and to a lesser extent systemic redox status in RP patients compared to controls. Twenty-five patients (10 in the treated arm and 15 in the placebo arm) completed the nutritional intervention. After 2 years of supplementation, patients who received NUT presented better retinal responses (mfERG responses) compared to patients who received placebo. Besides, patients who received NUT showed better ocular antioxidant response (SOD3 activity) and lower oxidative damage (CAR) than those who received placebo. This study suggested that long-term NUT supplementation could slow down visual impairment and ameliorate ocular oxidative stress.

Abstract
Agricultural products are indispensable for equilibrated diets since they discharge minerals and several bioactive constituents. Considering the increasing demand for organic products, research has been conducted over recent years to investigate whether organically grown food products are chemically different compared to those produced with conventional farming. In this work, a novel inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric method was developed and validated for the determination of nutrient and toxic elements in walnut oils produced with conventional and organic farming. The method presented good linearity (r2 > 0.9990) for each element at the selected emission line. The limits of detection and limits of quantification ranged between 0.09 μg g−1 to 2.43 μg g−1 and 0.28 μg g−1 to 8.1 μg g−1, respectively. Method accuracy and was assessed by analyzing the certified reference materials BCR 278-R and spiked walnut oil samples. The determined metals were quantified, and the results were analyzed by Student’s t-test to investigate the differences in the elemental profile of the walnut oils according to type of farming (conventional or organic).

Abstract
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal dystrophies characterized by progressive degeneration of photoreceptor cells. Ocular redox status is altered in RP suggesting oxidative stress could contribute to their progression. In this study, we investigated the effect of a mixture of nutraceuticals with antioxidant properties (NUT) on retinal degeneration in rd10 mice, a model of RP. NUT was orally administered to rd10 mice from postnatal day (PD) 9 to PD18. At PD18 retinal function and morphology were examined by electroretinography (ERG) and histology including TUNEL assay, immunolabeling of microglia, Müller cells, and poly ADP ribose polymers. Retinal redox status was determined by measuring the activity of antioxidant enzymes and some oxidative stress markers. Gene expression of the cytokines IL-6, TNFα, and IL-1β was assessed by real-time PCR. NUT treatment delayed the loss of photoreceptors in rd10 mice partially preserving their electrical responses to light stimuli. Moreover, it ameliorated redox status and reduced inflammation including microglia activation, upregulation of cytokines, reactive gliosis, and PARP overactivation. NUT ameliorated retinal functionality and morphology at early stages of RP in rd10 mice. This formulation could be useful as a neuroprotective approach for patients with RP in the future.
