Abstract
Fruit quality is essential for nutrition and human health and needs urgent attention in current agricultural practices. Organic farming is not as productive as conventional agriculture, but it can provide higher quality in some fruit crops, thanks to the absence of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, enhanced pollination, and the reduction of protection treatments, hence boosting antioxidant compound production. Although organic farming does not always provide healthier food than conventional farming, some lessons from organic farming can be extrapolated to new sustainable production models. Exploiting natural resources and an adequate knowledge transfer will undoubtedly help improve the quality of climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits in new agricultural systems.

Abstract
Strawberries are a valuable crop in Kenya with the potential for significant economic contributions. However, strawberry production in the country has been facing considerable challenges, impacting its economic potential. This study examined the influence of organic manure on strawberry growth and characteristics in Kabete and Mbooni areas in Kenya. The study used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments included livestock manure (well composted mixture of chicken, goat, and cow manure), bokashi manure, and a control, coded as LivManure, BokManure and Control, respectively. Growth parameters including leaf area, number of white flowers and number of runners, as well as yield parameters such as the number and weight of strawberries were assessed from the 3rd to 10th week after transplanting, during the short rain season of 2021. Using R statistical software, linear models were fitted to datasets from both study sites and analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by post-hoc tests for multiple comparisons. The rigorous analysis of the Kabete and Mbooni datasets provided insightful revelations about the influence of different treatments on strawberry characteristics, and geographical disparities between the two regions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) outcomes unveiled significant treatment effects in both sites, with F(2,69) = 62.57, p < 0.001 for Kabete and F(2,69) = 49.02, p < 0.001 for Mbooni, highlighting distinct influences of treatments on log values within each group. Post hoc analyses, including Tukey tests and bootstrap comparisons robustly validated the significant differences among the three treatments in each site, supported by p-values <0.001. Effect sizes were also employed to reinforce the findings, and planned contrasts were set to gain more power in the analysis of variance. Comparison between Kabete and Mbooni indicated a significant difference of 9.78 units, with Mbooni area exhibiting significantly higher strawberry characteristics compared to Kabete. The results showed that LivManure treatment had the highest mean in both sites, followed by BokManure and Control treatments, respectively. These findings have important implications for agriculture, and highlight the potential benefits of using LivManure treatment to improve strawberry characteristics in similar agroclimatic settings. These observations can be attributed to the beneficial effects of livestock manure on soil health, which include buffering of the soil reaction, provision of essential plant nutrients and enhancement of soil faunal activities. Balanced use of livestock manure is recommended to enhance soil macro and micronutrients, and soil reaction for improved growth and yield of strawberry.

Abstract
Reasonably utilize the recyclable waste-cotton resource to develop the bio-polyurethane coatings had aroused more and more environmental interests recently. However, the terrible water resistance and porousness of the waste-cotton-derived bio-polyurethane coating caused the rapid nutrients release. In this work, the water-resistant and pyknotic cotton-fibre-derived coated-ureas (WPCUs) were fabricated with the recyclable low-cost waste-cotton-derived materials. The dramatically enhanced pyknotic and water-resistant characteristics of the WPCUs coatings can be obtained by the three-dimensional computerized tomography (2.33 to 1.19 %) and the water contact angle. The enhanced elasticity and the decreased water absorption were also vital to enhance the controlled-release performance. The accompanying controlled-release performance of the WPCUs was obviously improved (<2 h to 58.43 days). The modified WPCU75-10 with 4.0 % coating content exhibits the excellent controlled-release performance compared to the unmodified WPCU0-0. The controlled release mechanism can be clarified: The air column inside of the "small and few" micropores in the WPCUs coating only allow the gaseous water molecules to slowly penetrate and dissolve the inner urea cores (rather than liquid water). The obviously increased oilseed rape yield (128.75 %) showed the dependable agricultural application of the WPCUs. This work provides the resultful approach to develop the eco-friendly recyclable waste-plant-derived controlled-release fertilizers.

Abstract
This study examines whether cooperatives can assist more than 200 million farmers in China, who are facing tightening resources and environmental constraints, in adopting green farming practices. A framework for counterfactual analysis was established to quantify the impact of farmers joining cooperatives on the reduction in chemical fertilizer consumption and the use of organic fertilizers. The study's conclusions are based on data from 712 farmers in four counties in Shandong and Henan provinces. Joining a cooperative can have a positive impact on farmers' selection of environmentally friendly production methods, which increases the likelihood of farmers reducing chemical fertilizer application by 35.6% and organic fertilizer application by 22.0%. It can also reduce the cost of chemical fertilizer application by an average of $209.2/ha. The extent to which smallholder farmers use chemical and organic fertilizers after joining cooperatives depends on the size of their farming operations and their perception of green production.

Abstract
The objective of this review is to present a compilation of the application of various biostimulants in strawberry plants. Strawberry cultivation is of great importance worldwide, and, there is currently no review on this topic in the literature. Plant biostimulation consists of using or applying physical, chemical, or biological stimuli that trigger a response-called induction or elicitation-with a positive effect on crop growth, development, and quality. Biostimulation provides tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress, and more absorption and accumulation of nutrients, favoring the metabolism of the plants. The strawberry is a highly appreciated fruit for its high organoleptic and nutraceutical qualities since it is rich in phenolic compounds, vitamins, and minerals, in addition to being a product with high commercial value. This review aims to present an overview of the information on using different biostimulation techniques in strawberries. The information obtained from publications from 2000-2022 is organized according to the biostimulant's physical, chemical, or biological nature. The biochemical or physiological impact on plant productivity, yield, fruit quality, and postharvest life is described for each class of biostimulant. Information gaps are also pointed out, highlighting the topics in which more significant research effort is necessary.

Genome-Wide Identification of Strawberry Metal Tolerance Proteins and Their Expression under Cadmium Toxicity. HORTICULTURAE 2022. Abstract
Metal tolerance proteins (MTPs) are divalent cation transporters, known to upkeep the mineral nutrition of plants and heavy metal transport at cell, tissue, or whole plant levels. However, information related to evolutionary relationships and biological functions of MTP genes in strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.) remain elusive. Herein, we identified 12 MTP genes from the strawberry genome and divided them into three main groups (i.e., Zn-MTP, Fe/Zn MTP, and Mn-MTP), which is similar to MTP grouping in Arabidopsis and rice. The strawberry MTPs (FvMTPs) are predicted to be localized in the vacuole, while open reading frame (ORF) length ranged from 1113 to 2589 bp with 370 to 862 amino acids, and possess 4 to 6 transmembrane domains (TMDs), except for FvMTP12 that possessed 16 TMDs. All the FvMTP genes had putative cation efflux and cation diffusion facilitator domains along with a zinc dimerization (ZT-dimer) domain in Mn-MTPs. The collinear analysis suggested their conservation between strawberry and Arabidopsis MTPs. Promoter analysis also demonstrated that some of them might possibly be regulated by hormones and abiotic stress factors. Moreover, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis proposed that FvMTP genes are involved in cation transport and homeostasis. The expression analysis showed that FvMTP1, FvMTP1.1, and FvMTP4 were significantly induced in leaf samples, while FvMTP1.1 and FvMTP4 were significantly regulated in roots of cadmium (Cd)-treated strawberry plants during progressive stress duration. The findings of Cd accumulation depicted that Cd contents were significantly higher in root tissues than that of leaf tissues of strawberry. These results are indicative of their response during the specific duration in Cd detoxification, while further functional studies can accurately verify their specific role.

Abstract
Strawberry has gained increasing popularity all over the world due to its fruit properties. This popularity is due to the phytochemicals that strawberries have. The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of cultivation in open field and high tunnel on agromorphological and biochemical properties of strawberries. In this study, fruit yield and fruit quality characteristics of some strawberry varieties grown in open field and high tunnel were investigated. The highest fruit yield, fruit weight and titratable acidity were obtained in high tunnel grown Albion cultivar (542.743 g/plant, 14.927 g/fruit and 1.047%, respectively). While there was no statistical difference between cultivars and treatments in terms of soluble solids content and pH, fruit count was higher in Albion and Kabarla cultivars in both treatments compared to other cultivars (p < 0.05). Among the phenolic compounds, gallic acid was determined to be higher (between 9.246−31.680 mg/100 g) than other phenolics. Considering the organic acid content, malic acid was determined as the dominant organic acid in Kabarla cultivar (870.729 mg/100 g). In addition, in terms of vitamin C content, Rubygem cultivar stood out in both applications. Phenolic compound and organic acid contents varied in terms of varieties and applications. As a result, strawberry fruit, which is an important fruit in terms of fruit quality and consumption diversity, has been found to have high phenolic compounds and organic acid content, although it varies in all varieties and applications.

Influence of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizer Regimes on Growth Patterns and Antioxidants Capacity of Strawberry (Fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) cv. Chandler. J FOOD QUALITY 2022. Abstract
Fertilization, either in the form of organic or inorganic, always affects plant growth, yield, and nutritional quality of fruit crops. Further, the efficacy of fertilizers depends on various factors, including the area, climatic conditions, and cultivars. Rawalakot has ideal climatic conditions for growing strawberries. However, no studies related to the impact of different soil amendments on the growth habit and fruit quality of strawberries have been conducted so far. Therefore, in this study, different combinations of organic (farmyard manure (FYM) and poultry manure (PM)) and inorganic (urea) (N 150 kg/ha) fertilizers were used for comparison of growth pattern and postharvest quality of strawberry cv. Chandler. The organic and inorganic fertilizer regimes showed comparatively better results in terms of all the parameters studied. However, plants grown on soils amended with FYM equivalent to 75 kg N per ha + PM equivalent to 75 kg N per ha and FYM equivalent to 50 kg N per ha + PM equivalent to 50 kg N per ha + urea 50 kg N per ha showed 41% and 28% more survival percentage compared to control. Furthermore, the number of leaves, number of flowers, number of fruits, and yield were significantly high in plants grown on amended soil. Moreover, a significantly high amount of total soluble solids (10.0°Brix), titratable acidity (1.18%), ash (0.84%), fiber (3.03%), total phenols (7.61 μg gallic acid/g fresh weight), total flavonoids (7.93 mmol quercetin/100 g fresh weight), and total antioxidants (0.60 activity of FeSO4 mg/g fresh weight) was noted in comparison with control. Similarly, a combined treatment of FYM, PM, and urea also showed good results in terms of all the growth and fruit quality parameters as compared with other fertilizer regimes as well as control. However, the overall results of this study revealed that strawberries grown on soil amended with a combined dose of FYM equivalent to 75 kg N per ha + PM equivalent to 75 kg N per ha could be a potential dose for maximum yield and better quality fruits of strawberry.

Abstract
Strawberry plants (cv. Camarosa) were cultivated under organic (ORG) and integrated management (INT) practices to assess possible differences in plant growth, fruit production and quality, soil fertility, and plant nutrition. Two integrated fertilizer schemes were used, differentiating based on the origin of the major organic fertilizer used, i.e., chicken manure (I-ACT) versus fermented fungal biomass (I-AGR). Plant growth was higher under I-ACT treatment, whereas leaf area did not differ among treatments. The two integrated schemes resulted in higher fruit production. The organoleptic characteristics of the fruits did not differ, and this was also confirmed by a taste panel. The antioxidant capacity and flavanol concentration of organically produced fruits were higher, as well as fruit carbohydrate and total organic acid concentration. Leaf nitrogen concentration was higher under I-ACT, followed by ORG. I-ACT resulted in high leaf potassium concentration, as well as iron and manganese (together with I-AGR). Under ORG management, soil EC was found to be lower, whereas soil available phosphorus concentration was highest. Discriminant analysis taking into account fruit quality and phytochemical properties distinguished ORG management from the two integrated management practices, and when soil properties and leaf nutrient concentration were considered; all three systems were separated, indicating that the type of fertilizers used plays a significant role.

Abstract
The cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is octoploid (2n = 8x = 56) and has been the focused fruit species of which an increasing number of molecular and genetic research has been conducted in recent years. The aim of this study is to identify the relationships between sucrose metabolism, invertase enzyme activity and gene expression in four different fruit development periods (red, pink, green and white) of two commercially important strawberry varieties 'Rubygem' and 'Fortuna'. The metabolite profiles (glucose, fructose, sucrose and total sugar content) of two varieties were discovered to be extremely similar. The highest amount of total sugar was found in red fruits, while the lowest was obtained from green fruits. Invertase represents one of the key enzymes in sucrose metabolism. The lowest invertase activity was obtained from the green fruits in 'Rubygem' and 'Fortuna' during four developmental periods. In these varieties, the amount of sucrose was found to be close to glucose and fructose and the lowest amount was detected in green period, while invertase activity was relatively high during red and pink periods and invertase gene expression was determined at high levels in both primers (St-4 and St-6) in the green period. The results of the study indicated that sugar content and invertase activity were positively correlated while enzyme activity and gene expression were negatively correlated.
