Sustainable application of electrocatalytic and photo-electrocatalytic oxidation systems for water and wastewater treatment: a review

Wastewater treatment and reuse have risen as a solution to the water crisis plaguing the world. Global warming-induced climate change, population explosion and fast depletion of groundwater resources are going to exacerbate the present global water problems for the forthcoming future. In this scenario, advanced electrochemical oxidation process (EAOP) utilising electrocatalytic (EC) and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) technologies have caught hold of the interest of the scientific community. The interest stems from the global water management plans to scale down centralised water and wastewater treatment systems to decentralised and semicentralised treatment systems for better usage efficiency and less resource wastage. In an age of rising water pollution caused by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), EC and PEC systems were found to be capable of optimal mineralisation of these pollutants rendering them environmentally benign. The present review treads into the conventional electrochemical treatment systems to identify their drawbacks and analyses the scope of the EC and PEC to mitigate them. Probable electrode materials, potential catalysts and optimal operational conditions for such applications were also examined. The review also discusses the possible retrospective application of EC and PEC as point-of-use and point-of-entry treatment systems during the transition from conventional centralised systems to decentralised and semi-centralised water and wastewater treatment systems.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water streams: Occurrence, detection, and removal by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are part of the emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment due to their known or suspected adverse effects in aquatic and terrestrial organisms, as well as in human health. Presence of PPCPs in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has been mainly attributed to the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Although several PPCPs have been detected in wastewater, their removal from wastewater via biological processes is limited. Removal of PPCPs depends on their chemical structure, concentration, solubility, and technology used to treat the wastewater. Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) are some of the most sought-after methods for dealing with organic pollutants in water including PPCPs, due to generation of strong oxidants such as •OH, H₂O₂ and O₃^- by using directly or indirectly electrochemical technology. This review is focused on the removal of main PPCPs via EAOPs such as, anodic oxidation, electro-Fenton, photoelectron-Fenton, solar photoelectron-Fenton, photoelectrocatalysis and sonoelectrochemical processes. Although more than 40 PPCPs have been identified through different analytical approaches, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and antifungal are the main categories of PPCPs detected in different water matrices. Application of EAOPs has been centered in the removal of antibiotics and analgesics of high consumption by using model media, e.g. Na₂SO_4. Photoelectrocatalysis and Electro-Fenton processes have been the most versatile EAOPs applied for PPCPs removal under a wide range of operating conditions and a variety of electrodes. Although EAOPs have gained significant scientific interest due to their effectiveness, low environmental impact, and simplicity, further research about the removal of PPCPs and their by-products under realistic concentrations and media is needed. Moreover, mid-, and long-term experiments that evaluate EAOPs performance will provide knowledge about key parameters that allow these technologies to be scaled and reduce the potential risk of PPCPs in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem.

Food By-Product Valorization by Using Plant-Based Coagulants Combined with AOPs for Agro-Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Re-using and adding value to by-products is one of the current focuses of the agri-food industry, following the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations. In this work, the by-products of four plants, namely chestnut burr, acorn peel, olive leaf, and grape stem were used as coagulants to treat elderberry wastewater (EW), a problematic liquid effluent. EW pre-treatment using these natural coagulants showed promising results after pH and coagulant dosage optimization. However, the decrease in total organic carbon (TOC) was not significant, due to the addition of the plant-based natural coagulants which contain carbon content. After this pre-treatment, the photo-Fenton advanced oxidation process was selected, after preliminary assays, to improve the global performance of the EW treatment. Photo-Fenton was also optimized for the parameters of pH, H₂O₂, Fe²⁺, and irradiance power, and the best conditions were applied to the EW treatment. Under the best operational conditions defined in the parametric study, the combined results of coagulation–flocculation–decantation (CFD) and photo-Fenton for chestnut burr, acorn peel, olive leaf, and grape stem were, respectively, 90.2, 89.5, 91.5, and 88.7% for TOC removal; 88.7, 82.0, 90.2 and 93.1%, respectively, for turbidity removal; and finally, 40.6, 42.2, 45.3, and 39.1%, respectively, for TSS removal. As a final remark, it is possible to suggest that plant-based coagulants, combined with photo-Fenton, can be a promising strategy for EW treatment that simultaneously enables valorization by adding value back to food by-products.

A critical review on the sonochemical degradation of organic pollutants in urine, seawater, and mineral water

Substances such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, synthetic and natural hormones, plasticizers, and industrial chemicals enter the environment daily. Many of them are a matter of growing concern worldwide. The use of ultrasound to eliminate these compounds arises as an interesting alternative for treating mineral water, seawater, and urine. Thereby, this work presents a systematic and critical review of the literature on the elimination of organic contaminants in these particular matrices, using ultrasound-based processes. The degradation efficiency of the sonochemical systems, the influence of the nature of the pollutant (volatile, hydrophobic, or hydrophilic character), matrix effects (enhancement or detrimental ability compared to pure water), and the role of the contaminant concentration were considered. The combinations of ultrasound with other degradation processes, to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the sonochemical process, were considered. Also, energy consumptions and energy costs associated with pollutants degradation in the target matrices were estimated. Moreover, the gaps that should be developed in future works, on the sonodegradation of organic contaminants in mineral water, seawater, and urine, were discussed.

Recent Trends in Pharmaceuticals Removal from Water Using Electrochemical Oxidation Processes

Nowadays, the research on the environmental applications of electrochemistry to remove recalcitrant and priority pollutants and, in particular, drugs from the aqueous phase has increased dramatically. This literature review summarizes the applications of electrochemical oxidation in recent years to decompose pharmaceuticals that are often detected in environmental samples such as carbamazapine, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, diclofenac, ibuprofen, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, etc. Similar to most physicochemical processes, efficiency depends on many operating parameters, while the combination with either biological or other physicochemical methods seems particularly attractive. In addition, various strategies such as using three-dimensional electrodes or the electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide have been proposed to overcome the disadvantages of electrochemical oxidation. Finally, some guidelines are proposed for future research into the applications of environmental electrochemistry for the degradation of xenobiotic compounds and micropollutants from environmental matrices. The main goal of the present review paper is to facilitate future researchers to design their experiments concerning the electrochemical oxidation processes for the degradation of micropollutants/emerging contaminants, especially, some specific drugs considering, also, the existing limitations of each process.

Sonochemical degradation of trimethoprim in water matrices: Effect of operating conditions, identification of transformation products and toxicity assessment

The sonochemical degradation of trimethoprim (TMP), a widely used antibiotic, in various water matrices was investigated. The effect of several parameters, such as initial TMP concentration (0.5-3 mg/L), actual power density (20-60 W/L), initial solution pH (3-10), inorganic ions, humic acid and water matrix on degradation kinetics was examined. The pseudo-first order degradation rate of TMP was found to increase with increasing power density and decreasing pH, water complexity (ultrapure water > bottled water > secondary wastewater) and initial TMP concentration. TMP degradation is accompanied by the formation of several transformation products (TPs) as evidenced by LC-QToF-MS analysis. Nine such TPs were successfully identified and their time-trend profiles during degradation were followed. An in silico toxicity evaluation was performed showing that several TPs could potentially be more toxic than the parent compound towards Daphnia magna, Pimephales promelas and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
