Abstract
As life becomes more stressful, neurological disorders, psychiatric disorders, and comorbidities of the two are becoming more and more of a concern. Multiple neuropsychiatric disorders share the same mental and somatic dysfunction and may involve common brain circuits and mechanistic targets. Music therapy, as an art form with proven efficacy, low cost and few side effects, is promoted for use in interventions for neuropsychiatric disorders. This may be closely related to the release of signaling molecules such as monoamine neurotransmitters, the glutamatergic system, the gut-microbiota-brain axis, pro-inflammatory cytokines and the endogenous opioid peptide system. However, fewer studies have mentioned the main targets of music to promote functional changes in brain regions. Therefore, this paper is a review of the mechanisms by which music therapy interacts with the prefrontal cortex-hippocampus-amygdala circuit through the aforementioned molecules. It is also hypothesized that glial cells, mitochondria and microRNAs are microscopic targets for musical intervention in neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim is to give new ideas for future research into the biological mechanisms of music therapy intervention in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hospitalization in the ICU can have long-term physiological and psychological impacts, affecting functional recovery and quality of life of post-ICU patients. Despite systematic reviews showing the impact of music interventions on physiological and psychological outcomes in ICU patients, their applicability and effectiveness in the post-ICU context remain unclear. AIM This review aimed to summarize: a) the types and characteristics of music/sound of interventions used in the rehabilitation of ICU patients, b) evidence on the feasibility, safety and acceptability of sound and music interventions for post ICU survivors, c) the types of post-ICU outcomes explored and the effects of sound and music interventions on any type of outcome in post-ICU survivors, and d) potential mechanisms or theoretical frameworks underlying the effects of sound and music interventions. METHOD We combined current systematic review search methods with a critical narrative approach to synthesize a diverse body of evidence. RESULTS Results showed that music interventions positively affect the psychological well-being and health outcomes of post-ICU patients. Outcomes included improvements in stress, anxiety, mood, movement, sleep, and pain, despite differences in patient populations and intervention design. No safety concerns were reported. The identified theoretical frameworks described physiological, neurobiological and/or psycho-social pathways as key mediators, however, these mechanisms are not completely understood. CONCLUSION Research evidence supports the positive effects of music interventions in post-ICU patients. Further experimental studies are required, especially in adult post-ICU populations to elucidate the characteristics, components, feasibility, and long-term effects of sound/music interventions. IMPLICATION TO PRACTICE 1. Music interventions help in post-ICU patients' recovery benefitting stress, anxiety, PTSD, mood, movement, sleep, and pain. 2. Integrating theoretical frameworks into music interventions can expand outcome measures to include physiological markers alongside psychological ones, improving quality of life. 3. Further rigorous interventional studies are required to identify the effectiveness of sound and music interventions in post-ICU patients.

Abstract
Background: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) living with advanced cancer may experience a heightened risk for existential distress. Addressing AYAs' hopes can stimulate a dialogue about their concerns, values, and goals, provide a path to holistically support their existential needs, and potentially alleviate their distress. This study aimed to evaluate hope's role in a sample of AYAs living with advanced cancer. Method: This study used a Husserlian phenomenology-informed descriptive qualitative research design to elicit AYAs' experiences with hope while living with advanced cancer. Participants were virtually recruited from an academic medical center and an online non-profit organization. Thematic analyses were performed across the data set to identify final themes. Results: Fifteen AYAs aged 12-21 years diagnosed with advanced hematological (80%) or solid (20%) malignancies participated in this study. A main theme of Simple Supports of Hope with a subtheme of Diversion was identified. Participants described music as a form of diversion, which supported their hope. Participants found listening to music calming and comforting and helped them cope with their distress. Performing music provided a creative outlet for negative feelings associated with cancer treatment. Participants reported creating music transformed and deintensified the treatment environment and helped spread hope to healthcare staff. Discussion: AYAs may intentionally use music to improve emotional expression, empowerment, connection, and coping strategies throughout the treatment process for cancer. Additional research needs to be conducted exploring the use of music interventions such as therapeutic songwriting or compositional music therapy to assist AYAs with building coping strategies during treatment for cancer.

Abstract
Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is the term used to describe the decline in the physical, cognitive, and/or mental condition of individuals who have been discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). This complication could result in a significant reduction in quality of life, with some patients experiencing symptoms of prolonged weakness, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intensive care advancement over the years has resulted in an increase in ICU survival rates and a proportional increase in PICS, creating a need for more in-depth research into the prevention and management of the disease. Hence, this study aims to examine the present body of literature on PICS, encompassing its underlying physiological processes and elements that contribute to its development, methods for evaluating and diagnosing the condition, current treatment choices as well as potential new approaches, and the constraints in managing PICS and the necessity for further investigation. In this article, studies were compiled from several databases, including, but not limited to, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were reviewed, and their data were used to highlight important aspects regarding the efficacy of current PICS screening tools, the optimization and limitations of both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment methods, and the feasibility and safety of emerging treatments and technologies. The major conclusions of this review were centered around the need for multidisciplinary management of PICS. From pharmacological management using analgesia to non-pharmacological management using early mobilization and exercise therapy, the effective treatment of PICS requires a multifaceted approach. Patient follow-up and its importance were touched upon, including strategies and policies to bolster proper follow-up, thereby increasing favorable outcomes. Lastly, the importance of family involvement and the increased need for research into this topic were highlighted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effectiveness of family music therapy for patients with advanced palliative care hepatocellular carcinoma and their main caregivers was investigated. METHODS The clinical data of liver cancer patients and their main caregivers admitted to Wuwei City People's Hospital from August 2022 to April 2023 were retrospectively analysed. Patients were divided into observation group A and control group A according to whether they received family music therapy, and caregivers were divided into control group B and observation group B. The general demographic data, self-rating depression scale (SDS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), cancer-related fatigue scale (CFS), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), anticipatory grief scale (AGS), and caregiver burden inventory (CBI) scores of the patients and their primary caregivers were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline data of the two groups. Then, data were analysed using t-test and chi-squared (χ2) test. RESULTS After 1:1 PSM, 45 samples were included in each group. Before management, no significant differences in SDS, SAS, AGS, CFS, PSQI and CBI scores were found among the groups (P > 0.05). After management, the SDS, SAS and CFS scores of observation group A were lower than those of control group A (P < 0.05). The AGS, PSQI and CBI scores of observation group B were lower than those of control group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The effect of family music supplement therapy is ideal, which can relieve the negative emotions of patients, reduce the degree of cancer-related fatigue, enhance the sleep quality of the main caregivers and reduce anticipatory grief and the burden of care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noise pollution in the operating room can have adverse effects on the physical and mental well-being of patients. Since the mid-20th century, music therapy has been increasingly used in clinical practice. Soothing music has a beneficial effect in maintaining the efficacy of intraoperative sedation and regulating patients' emotions. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of soothing music on the intraoperative management of patients undergoing tension-free herniorrhaphy. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 244 patients who underwent open tension-free herniorrhaphy under local anesthesia at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2019 to May 2021. According to the different included time periods, the hospital implemented soothing music management from June 2020 to May 2021, and 110 patients admitted during this period were classified as the study group. One hundred thirty-four patients who underwent clinical routine management from June 2019 to May 2020 were classified as the control group. The patients in the two groups received corresponding management modes during surgery. The perioperative indicators, stress response, anxiety, depression, and clinical efficacy of the two groups were analyzed. RESULTS No significant differences in the operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative off-bed activity time, and hospitalization time between the two groups (P > 0.05). The study group exhibited lower postoperative cortisol (213.30 (203.40, 229.00) nmol/L) and anxiety (9.00 (7.00, 12.00) points) levels than the control group (246.85 (230.50, 258.40) nmol/L; 14.00 (12.00, 15.00) points) (P < 0.001). Moreover, no significant differences were noted in the norepinephrine and depression levels and the severity of illness, global improvement, and efficacy index scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Soothing music therapy, as a clinical auxiliary method, has a positive impact on the intraoperative management of patients undergoing open tension-free herniorrhaphy, leading to reduced cortisol levels and alleviation of anxiety.

Abstract
Background Although the effectiveness of (es)ketamine for therapy-resistant depression (TRD) has been established, potential treatment-limiting factors include side effects like dissociation, anxiety, or elevated blood pressure. Music can reduce stress and negative emotions as anxiety. This study aimed to investigate the impact of listening to music during intranasal (es)ketamine administration on both tolerability and efficacy. Methods Records of 494 sessions (of 37 patients) with intranasal (es)ketamine administration, each containing data of blood pressure measurements, DSS-IV (dissociation symptoms scale-IV), anxiety and euphoria analogue scale, MADRS (Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale) and BDI (Beck's Depression Inventory) were evaluated. Results The between-group analysis, comparing participants who listened to music with those who did not, revealed significant differences in the administered dose (p-value: 0.003, mean: 131.5 mg with music vs. 116.7 mg without music), scores on the DSS Item 1 (p-value: 0.005, mean: 3 points vs. 2.4 points), levels of anxiety (p-value: <0.001, mean: 0.4 points vs. 1.4 points), and measurements of maximal systolic blood pressure after administration (p-value: 0.017, mean: 137.9 mmHg vs. 140.3 mmHg). Listening to music had no impact on the MARDS-change score between the sessions. Limitations Key limitations include a non-randomized naturalistic design and the non-standardized selection of music, which was based on individual patient preferences. Conclusion Listening to music during intranasal (es)ketamine therapy appears to be linked to reduced anxiety and lower blood pressure, stable or increased dissociation levels, and improved tolerance for higher doses. These findings could potentially contribute to the optimization of (es)ketamine therapy, both in terms of treatment efficacy and managing side effects.

Abstract
Objective Individuals who have experienced traumatic events often encounter a variety of changes in their lives and and may suffer from them. To help and alleviate these traumatic stress, we developed an evidence-based mobile application (app) for easy accessibility. This study aimed to test the effects of the mobile app for traumatic stress management using neurofeedback-based meditation and binaural beat music. Method Fifty-eight participants were enrolled in a pilot randomized controlled trial (Trial Registration Number: KCT007724) consisting of two groups: (a) experimental group (n = 28) and (b) control group (n = 30). Participants used the mobile app 3 days a week at home for 4 weeks, engaging in neurofeedback-based meditation and binaural beat music. Participants completed self-report measures (SCL-47-R, Psychological Well-Being Post-traumatic Changes questionnaire) and EEG test (emotional stability, anti-stress) at a pretreatment and 1-month follow-up. Results Participants in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in psychological well-being (F = 16.37, p < 0.001), emotional stability (F = 10.38; p = 0.002), and the anti-stress index (F = 11.37; p = 0.001). Conclusion The results of this pilot trial, involving a neurofeedback-based meditation and binaural beat-centered music intervention, provide preliminary support and a readily accessible option for individuals seeking to recover from the effects of traumatic events. Additionally, we have established the groundwork for subsequent research to study the efficacy of a neurofeedback-based meditation program and a binaural beat-centered music intervention for those who have experienced traumatic events.

Abstract
Resilience mechanisms can be dynamically triggered throughout the lifecourse by resilience factors in order to prevent individuals from developing stress-related pathologies such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some interventional studies have suggested that listening to music and musical practice after experiencing a traumatic event decrease the intensity of PTSD, but surprisingly, no study to our knowledge has explored musical experience as a potential resilience factor before the potential occurrence of a traumatic event. In the present conceptual analysis, we sought to summarize what is known about the concept of resilience and how musical experience could trigger two key mechanisms altered in PTSD: emotion regulation and cognitive control. Our hypothesis is that the stimulation of these two mechanisms by musical experience during the pre-traumatic period could help protect against the symptoms of emotional dysregulation and intrusions present in PTSD. We then developed a new framework to guide future research aimed at isolating and investigating the protective role of musical experience regarding the development of PTSD in response to trauma. The clinical application of this type of research could be to develop pre-trauma training that promotes emotional regulation and cognitive control, aimed at populations at risk of developing PTSD such as healthcare workers, police officers, and military staffs.

Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating sequela of extraordinary traumatic sufferings that threaten personal health and dramatically attenuate the patient's quality of life. Accumulating lines of evidence suggest that functional disorders in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic system contribute substantially to PTSD symptomatology. Notably, music therapy has been shown to greatly ameliorate PTSD symptoms. In this literature review, we focused on whether music improved PTSD symptoms, based on VTA dopaminergic action, including the effects of music on dopamine (DA)-related gene expression, the promotion of DA release and metabolism, and the activation of VTA functional activities. In addition, the strengths and limitations of the studies concerning the results of music therapy on PTSD are discussed. Collectively, music therapy is an effective approach for PTSD intervention, in which the VTA dopaminergic system may hold an important position.
