Abstract
Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have emerged as key therapeutic agents in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, offering benefits that extend beyond glycemic control. This review examines the role of SGLT-2 inhibitors in modulating cardiac autonomic function, with a particular focus on heart rate variability (HRV) as a biomarker of autonomic balance. These agents improve metabolic profiles through enhanced glucosuria, natriuresis, and weight loss, while concurrently reducing blood pressure. Importantly, they also attenuate sympathetic nervous system overactivity and promote parasympathetic modulation, which may lower the risk of adverse cardiovascular events. The underlying mechanisms include not only the metabolic effects but also anti-inflammatory and antioxidative actions, which together contribute to improved endothelial function and vascular health. Advanced HRV analyses, encompassing traditional time and frequency domain methods as well as nonlinear approaches, have proven valuable in detecting early autonomic dysfunction in high-risk populations. Some studies suggest that SGLT-2 inhibitors may be associated with improvements in HRV parameters, such as increased SDNN and RMSSD and a reduced LF/HF ratio. However, findings are inconsistent across studies, and further research is needed to determine the extent and mechanisms of these potential effects. Although these findings are promising, further standardized, long-term studies are essential to clarify the mechanisms and optimal therapeutic strategies involving SGLT-2 inhibitors in the management of autonomic dysfunction. Future research should also explore the synergistic potential of combining SGLT-2 inhibitors with other cardiometabolic therapies to enhance cardiovascular outcomes in individuals with and without T2DM.

Abstract
Patients with psychiatric disorders exhibit general autonomic dysregulation and elevated cardiovascular risks, which could be indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). However, HRV is susceptible to age and other patient-specific factors. This study aimed to investigate the HRV profile and age-related variations, as well as the potential influence of sex, BMI, and HR on HRV in psychiatric populations. There were 571 consecutive patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (SZ) (N = 282) or major depressive disorder (MDD) (N = 289) recruited and classified as adolescent (11-21 years) and adult (> 21 years) groups. HRV indices were measured with 3-minute resting ECG recordings. Compared to adolescent subjects, all time-domain and nonlinear HRV indices were notably reduced in adults, while frequency-domain HRV was comparable. Between SZ and MDD groups, only HTI differed significantly. Age and psychiatric disorders exhibited complex interaction effects on HRV. Stratified by age stage, MDD patients exhibited slightly higher HRV in adolescence but slightly lower HRV in adulthood. In logistic regression analysis, HTI and SD2 were significantly distinctive between adolescents and adults in MDD group, while pNN50 was distinctive in SZ group. Moreover, female subjects demonstrated lower time-domain HRV, LF/HF and SD2 than males. HR exhibited inverse relationship with three domain HRV. No significant effect of BMI was observed. In psychiatric populations, compared to adolescents, adults decreased in time-domain and nonlinear HRV, but not in frequency-domain HRV. Age and psychotic disorders exhibited complex interaction effects on HRV. Sex and HR also emerged as important influencing factors of HRV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the acute effects of two isoenergetic but micronutrient-diverse meals-a Mediterranean-like meal (MdM) and a fast food-like meal (FFM)-on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), lung function, and airway inflammation response. METHODS Forty-six participants were enrolled in a randomized crossover clinical trial, consuming two isoenergetic meals: FFM (burger, fries, and sugar-sweetened drink) and MdM (vegetable soup, whole-wheat pasta, salad, olive oil, sardines, fruit, and water). Pupillometry assessed parasympathetic (MaxD, MinD, Con, ACV, MCV) and sympathetic (ADV, T75) nervous system outcomes. Lung function and airway inflammation were measured before and after each meal through spirometry and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), respectively. RESULTS Mixed-effects model analysis showed that the MdM was associated with a hegemony of parasympathetic responses, with a significant increase of MaxD associated with a faster constriction velocity (ACV and MCV); on the other side, the FFM was associated with changes in the sympathetic response, showing a quicker redilation velocity (a decrease in T75). After adjusting for confounders, the mixed-effects models revealed that the FFM significantly decreased T75. Regarding lung function, a meal negatively impacted FVC (ae = -0.079, p < 0.001) and FEV1 (ae = -0.04, p = 0.017); however, FeNO increased, although after adjusting, no difference between meals was seen. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that the FFM counteracted the parasympathetic activity of a meal, while a meal, irrespective of the type, decreased lung function and increased airway inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression has emerged as a global public health concern with high incidence and disability rates, which are timely imperative to identify and intervene in clinical practice. The objective of this study was to explore the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and depression, with the aim of establishing and validating machine learning models for the auxiliary diagnosis of depression. METHODS The data of 465 outpatients from the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University were selected for the study. The study population was then randomly divided into training and test sets in a 7:3 ratio. Logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm models were used to construct risk prediction models in the training set, and the model performance was verified in the test set. The four models were evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), calibration curve and the decision curve analysis (DCA). Furthermore, we employed the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method to illustrate the effects of the features attributed to the model. RESULTS There were 237 people in the depressed group and 228 in the non-depressed group. In the training set (n = 325) and test set (n = 140), the area under of the curve(AUC) values of the XGBoost model are 0.92 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.888,0.95] and 0.82 (95% CI 0.754,0.892)] respectively, which are higher than the other three models. The XGBoost model has excellent predictive efficacy and clinical utility. The SHAP method was ranked according to the importance of the degree of influence on the model, with age, heart rate, Standard deviation of the NN intervals (SDNN), two nonlinear parameters of HRV and sex considered to be the top 6 predictors. CONCLUSION We provided a feasibility study of HRV as a potential biomarker for depression. The proposed model based on HRV provides clinicians with a quantitative auxiliary diagnostic tool, which is assist to improving the accuracy and efficiency of depression diagnosis, and can also be utilized for the monitoring and prevention of depression.

Abstract
Recent advancements in methodologies such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and ambulatory physiology devices have enhanced our ability to measure emotions experienced in daily life. Despite the feasibility of EMA for assessing children's and youth's emotional self-reports, the feasibility of combining it with physiological measurements in a real-life context has yet to be established. Our scoping review evaluates the feasibility and usability of implementing emotional and physiological EMA in children and youth. Due to the complexities of physiological EMA data, this review also synthesized existing methodological and statistical practices of existing studies. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched and screened PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science electronic databases for studies that assessed children's and youth's subjective emotions and cardiac or electrodermal physiological responses outside the laboratory. Our initial search resulted in 4174 studies, 13 of which were included in our review. Findings showed significant variability in the feasibility of physiological EMA, with physiology device wear-time averaging 58.77% of study periods and data loss due to quality issues ranging from 0.2% to 77% across signals. Compliance for emotional EMA was approximately 60% of study periods when combined with physiological EMA. The review points to a lack of standardized procedures in physiological EMA and suggests a need for guidelines in designing, processing, and analyzing such data collected in real-life contexts. We offer recommendations to enhance participant engagement and develop standard practices for employing physiological EMA with children and youth for emotion, developmental, and psychophysiology researchers.

Abstract
A two-factor within subjects and randomized controlled was conducted with three groups (two experimental and one control) to explore the effects of the Mediterranean diet and respiratory muscle training on ventilatory fatigue, stress, and emotional performance of woodwind musicians. 70 students from the Valencia Conservatory of Music were recruited and randomized into three groups: respiratory training group + nutrition program (RTG; n = 17), control group (CG; n = 35) and nutrition program group (NPG; n = 18). The nutritional program was based on Mediterranean a diet. Body composition, emotional intelligence, physiological stress and ventilatory response were assessed for all groups before and after intervention. Mixed ANOVA showed main effects of diet and training interventions on emotional attention (F = 8.042; p = 0.006), clarity (F = 9.306; p = 0.003), repair (F = 5.527; p = 0.022), Forced-Expiratory-Volume (F = 30.196; p < 0.000) and Forced-Vital-Capacity (F = 21.052; p < 0.000), with both interventions improving emotional intelligence and ventilatory variables. Bonferroni post-hoc analysis revealed significant differences of RTG and CG for emotional attention (MD = 4.60; p = 0.023), comprehension (MD = 5.734; p = 0.005), repair (MD = 8.576; p < 0.000), FEV1 (MD = 0.862; p = 0.005), and FCV (MD = 1.608; p < 0.001); with similar results when comparing NTG and CG: emotional attention (MD = 4.156; p = 0.041), comprehension (MD = 4.473; p = 0.033), repair (MD = 6.511; p = 0.001), Forced-Expiratory-Volume (MD = 1.608; p < 0.001), and Forced-Vital-Capacity (MD = 1.183; p < 0.001). No significant effects of experimental groups were observed for physiological stress variables (p > 0.05). This results suggests that respiratory training enhances emotional intelligence and lessens respiratory fatigue in musicians, and a combination of a Mediterranean diet and respiratory muscle training further boosts emotional intelligence, albeit with limited impact on physiological stress. This study represents a novel investigation into the approach by dietary interventions and respiratory muscle training in wind musicians since there are no studies that analyze it.

Abstract
Objective Preoperative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is supposed to be the abnormally high occurrence of OSA the night before surgery under general anesthesia. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence preoperative OSA using cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) and its correlation with imbalance of sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system. Methods A total of 550 patients with plans to receive surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled. All patients were assigned to wear CPC on the night before surgery until the next day. Sleep quality characteristics, heart rate variation parameters, and apnea-hypopnea index were acquired. The diagnosis of pre-existing OSA was not considered in the current study. Results According to apnea-hypopnea index, 28.4%, 32.2%, 26.2%, and 13.3% patients were assessed as no, mild, moderate, and severe operative OSA, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression model revealed that higher age [p < 0.001, odds ratio (OR) = 1.043] was independently and positively associated with preoperative OSA; heart rate variation parameters representing the imbalance of sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system, such as higher low-frequency (p < 0.001, OR = 1.004), higher low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (p = 0.028, OR = 1.738), lower NN20 count divided by the total number of all NN intervals (pNN20; p < 0.001, OR = 0.950), and lower high-frequency (p < 0.001, OR = 0.998), showed independent relationships with a higher probability of preoperative OSA. Higher age (p = 0.005, OR = 1.024), higher very-low-frequency (p < 0.001, OR = 1.001), and higher low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (p = 0.003, OR = 1.655) were associated with a higher probability of moderate-to-severe preoperative OSA, but higher pNN10 (p < 0.001, OR = 0.951) was associated with a lower probability of moderate-to-severe preoperative OSA. Conclusion Preoperative OSA is prevalent. Higher age and imbalance of sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system are independently and positively associated with a higher occurrence of preoperative OSA. CPC screening may promote the management of preoperative OSA.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic stress can cause an imbalance within the autonomic nervous system, thereby affecting cardiovascular and mental health. Physical activity (PA) may have a positive effect on the autonomic nervous system and stress-related disorders, such as depression and burnout. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive marker of the autonomic nervous system. However, limited and inconsistent data exist on the exact relationship between HRV, PA and depression and burnout symptoms. The HARMODI study aims to explore whether HRV is a feasible marker of depression and burnout symptoms and aims to evaluate the role of PA in the treatment of stress-related disorders. METHODS AND ANALYSES This is an observational study with a cross-sectional up to 8 week follow-up study design. A total of 153 patients, undergoing psychiatric inpatient treatment with burnout syndrome (Z73) and depressive episode (F32 or F33) or adjustment disorder (F43.2), will be recruited. Data on depression and burnout symptoms, HRV recordings (24-hour, supine, standing and exercise stress test), cognitive function, cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiovascular health, balance and strength will be collected at baseline (T1) and after up to 8 weeks (T2). Continuous data on PA and Ecological Momentary Assessments of exhaustion, mood and tension will be monitored daily throughout inpatient treatment. Multiple regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, will assess the association between HRV as the primary outcome, PA and depression and burnout severity score. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The protocol has been approved by Swiss Ethics Committee, Cantonal Ethics Committee Zürich. Results of HARMODI will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT05874856.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine differences in resting heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) between young adults with normal-weight obesity (NWO) and normal-weight lean (NWL). METHODS A total of 65 normal-weight individuals (18-25 years old, 50 women, body mass index 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2) were included in this cross-sectional study. Body fat percentage was determined using a whole-body dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scanner. Resting HRV and HR were assessed with the Polar RS800CX. Forty-one participants were classified as NWO and 24 NWL using cutoff points for body fat percentage (33.3% for women and 23.1% for men). RESULTS There were no differences in HRV between NWO and NWL groups (all p > .05). HR was higher in NWO (mean 70 beats per minute [bpm], standard deviation [SD] 8) than in NWL adults (mean 65 bpm, SD 10), the adjusted mean difference 5 bpm (95% CI, 0 to 10 bpm). CONCLUSION HR is a noninvasive biomarker and relatively cheap, fast, and easy to measure that could detect "apparently healthy" young individuals with an adverse cardiovascular disease risk profile despite presenting a normal body weight.

Abstract
Individuals exhibiting high scores on the fatness subscale of the negative-physical-self scale (NPSS-F) are characterized by heightened preoccupation with body fat accompanied by negative body image perceptions, often leading to excessive dieting behaviors. This demographic constitutes a considerable segment of the populace in China, even among those who are not obese. Nonetheless, scant empirical inquiries have delved into the behavioral and neurophysiological profiles of individuals possessing a healthy body mass index (BMI) alongside elevated NPSS-F scores. This study employed an experimental paradigm integrating go/no-go and one-back tasks to assess inhibitory control and working memory capacities concerning food-related stimuli across three adult cohorts: those with normal weight and low NPSS-F scores, those with normal weight and high NPSS-F scores, and individuals classified as obese. Experimental stimuli comprised high- and low-caloric-food pictures with concurrent electroencephalogram (EEG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) recordings. Individuals characterized by high NPSS-F scores and normal weight exhibited distinctive electrophysiological responses compared to the other two cohorts, evident in event-related potential (ERP) components, theta and alpha band oscillations, and heart rate variability (HRV) patterns. In essence, the findings underscore alterations in electrophysiological reactivity among individuals possessing high NPSS-F scores and a healthy BMI in the context of food-related stimuli, underscoring the necessity for increased attention to this demographic alongside individuals affected by obesity.

Abstract
Introduction Acupuncture analgesia (AA) is widely used in clinical practice. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) may be an important pathway for acupuncture signal transduction. However, real-time changes in autonomic function during AA and the effect of "needle sensation" remain unclear. Methods We established a human pain model in healthy adults and randomly assigned 128 participants to the model, sham acupuncture, and acupuncture groups in a 1:1:2 ratio. Heart rate variability (HRV), including total power (TP), low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF), ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF), standard deviation of the normal-normal intervals (SDNN), and root mean square of successive interval differences (RMSSD), were used to assess autonomic function. The visual analog scale (VAS) and efficiency were used to assess the analgesic effect of acupuncture. The Massachusetts General Hospital acupuncture sensation scale (MASS) was used to indicate the intensity of the needle sensation. Anxiety levels were also measured. Finally, the correlation of MASS with HRV, VAS, and anxiety levels was analyzed. Results VAS decreased after 10 min of needling and 5 min after needle withdrawal in the acupuncture group compared with those in the model group (p = 0.038, p = 0.020). The efficacy rates were 82.0, 50.0, and 61.3% in the acupuncture, model, and sham groups, respectively. These represent significant differences between the acupuncture group and the model and sham acupuncture groups (p < 0.001 in each case). No differences were observed between the model and sham acupuncture groups. HF, TP, SDNN, and RMSSD were all increased in the acupuncture group compared with those in the model group (p = 0.045, p = 0.041, p = 0.002, p = 0.006, respectively). No differences were observed in the sham acupuncture group compared to the model group (p = 0.632, p = 0.542, p = 0.093, p = 0.222, respectively). The LF and LF/HF did not differ among all three groups. A positive correlation was observed between MASS and RMSSD2, LF2, RMSSD4, TP4, VAS5, and anxiety levels. Conclusion AA was associated with enhanced vagal activity. The intensity of needle sensation was positively correlated with vagal and sympathetic nerve activities. Acupuncture is an effective means of regulating autonomic function, and needle sensation may be an important modulator.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite accumulation of a substantial body of literature supporting the role of exercise on frontal lobe functioning, relatively less is understood of the interconnectivity of ventromedial prefrontal cortical (vmPFC) regions that underpin cardio-autonomic regulation predict cardiac chronotropic competence (CC) in response to sub-maximal exercise. METHODS Eligibility of 161 adults (mean age = 48.6, SD = 18.3, 68% female) was based upon completion of resting state brain scan and sub-maximal bike test. Sliding window analysis of the resting state signal was conducted over 45-s windows, with 50% overlap, to assess how changes in photoplethysmography-derived HRV relate to vmPFC functional connectivity with the whole brain. CC was assessed based upon heart rate (HR) changes during submaximal exercise (HR change /HRmax (206-0.88 × age) - HRrest). RESULTS During states of elevated HRV the vmPFC showed greater rsFC with an 83-voxel region of the hypothalamus (p < 0.001, uncorrected). Beta estimates of vmPFC connectivity extracted from a 6-mm sphere around this region emerged as the strongest predictor of CC (b = 0.283, p <.001) than age, BMI, and resting HRV F(8,144) = 6.30, p <.001. CONCLUSION Extensive glutamatergic innervation of the hypothalamus by the vmPFC allows for top-down control of the hypothalamus and its various autonomic efferents which facilitate chronotropic response during sub-maximal exercise.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Combat-related traumatic injury (CRTI) adversely affects heart rate variability (HRV). The mediating effect of mental and physical health factors on the relationship between CRTI, its severity and HRV has not been previously studied and investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional mediation analysis of the ArmeD SerVices TrAuma and RehabilitatioN OutComE (ADVANCE) prospective cohort study was performed. The sample consisted of injured and uninjured British male servicemen who were frequency-matched based on their age, rank, role-in-theater, and deployment to Afghanistan (2003-2014). CRTI and injury severity (the New Injury Severity Scores [NISS] [NISS < 25 and NISS ≥ 25]) were included as exposure variables. HRV was quantified using the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) obtained using pulse waveform analysis. Depression and anxiety mediators were quantified using the Patient Health Questionnaire and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, respectively. Body mass index and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) represented physical health measures. Two mediation pathways between exposure and outcome variables were examined in comparison with the uninjured group using structural equation modeling. RESULTS Of 862 servicemen, 428 were injured and 434 were uninjured with the mean age at assessment of 33.9 ± 5.4 (range 23-59) years. Structural equation modeling revealed that depression, anxiety, and body mass index did not significantly mediate the relationship between injury/injury severity and RMSSD. However, the 6MWT significantly mediated the relationship between CRTI and RMSSD (27% mediation). The indirect effect of 6MWT on the relationship between injury severity (NISS ≥ 25 vs. uninjured) and RMSSD was -0.06 (95% CI: -0.12, -0.00, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that greater physical function may improve HRV following CRTI. Longitudinal studies are warranted to further validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often report upper gastrointestinal (GI) (e.g., nausea and heartburn), somatic, and emotional symptoms. This study seeks to examine the relationships among younger and older women with IBS and indicators of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function and daily nausea and heartburn symptoms. METHODS Women were recruited through clinics and the community. Nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) was obtained using ambulatory electrocardiogram Holter monitors. Individual symptom severity and frequency were collected using 28-day diaries. All variables were stratified by younger (<46 years) and older (≥46 years) age groups. RESULTS Eighty-nine women with IBS were included in this descriptive correlation study (n = 57 younger; n = 32 older). Older women had reduced indices of vagal activity when compared to younger women. In older women, there was an inverse correlation between nausea and vagal measures (Ln RMSSD, r = -.41, p = .026; Ln pNN50, r = -.39, p = .034). Heartburn in older women was associated with sleepiness (r = .59, p < .001) and anger (r = .48, p = .006). Nausea was significantly correlated with anger in the younger group (r = .41, p = .001). There were no significant relationships between HRV indicators and nausea and heartburn in younger women. CONCLUSIONS Age-related differences in ANS function that are associated with nausea may portend unique opportunities to better understand the vagal dysregulation in women with IBS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Autonomic dysfunction is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Both obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are associated with heart rate variability (HRV) (a hall marker of sympathetic arousal) and increased risk of CVD. This study aims to investigate whether anthropometric parameters could predict reduced HRV in adult OSA during wakefulness. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Sleep center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth Hospital from 2012 to 2017. METHODS Total of 2134 subjects (503 non-OSA and 1631 OSA) were included. Anthropometric parameters were recorded. HRV was recorded during a 5-minute wakefulness period and analyzed by using time-domain method and frequency-domain method. Multiple step-wise linear regressions were performed to determine significant predictors of HRV with and without adjustments. Multiplicative interactions between gender, OSA, and obesity on HRV were also determined and evaluated. RESULTS Waist circumference (WC) was significant negative determinant of root mean square of successive NN intervals (β = -.116, p < .001) and high-frequency power (β = -.155, p < .001). Age was the strongest determining factor of HRV. Significant multiplicative interactions between obesity and OSA on HRV, gender, and obesity on cardiovascular parameters were observed. CONCLUSION Anthropometric parameters could predict reduced HRV during wakefulness in patients with OSA, especially WC was the strongest influenceable factor. Obesity and OSA had significant multiplicative interaction on HRV. Gender and obesity had significant multiplicative interaction on cardiovascular parameters. Early intervention for obesity, especially centripetal obesity, may improve reduction of autonomic function and risk of CVD.

Abstract
Background: Research on the compatibility of time domain indices, frequency domain measurements of heart rate variability obtained from electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms, and pulse wave signal (pulse rate variability; PRV) features is ongoing. The promising marker of cardiac autonomic function is heart rate variability. Recent research has looked at various other physiological markers, leading to the emergence of pulse rate variability. The pulse wave signal can be studied for variations to understand better changes in arterial stiffness and compliance, which are key indicators of cardiovascular health. Methods: 35 healthy overweight people were included. The Lead II electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was transmitted through an analog-to-digital converter (PowerLab 8/35 software, AD Instruments Pty. Ltd., New South Wales, Australia). This signal was utilized to compute Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and was sampled at a rate of 1024 Hz. The same AD equipment was also used to capture a pulse signal simultaneously. The right index finger was used as the recording site for the pulse signal using photoplethysmography (PPG) technology. Results: The participants' demographic data show that the mean age was 23.14 + 5.27 years, the mean weight was 73.68 + 7.40 kg, the mean body fat percentage was 32.23 + 5.30, and the mean visceral fat percentage was 4.60 + 2.0. The findings revealed no noticeable difference between the median values of heart rate variability (HRV) and PRV. Additionally, a strong correlation was observed between HRV and PRV. However, poor agreement was observed in the measurement of PRV and HRV. Conclusion: All indices of HRV showed a greater correlation with PRV. However, the level of agreement between HRV and PRV measurement was poor. Hence, HRV cannot be replaced with PRV and vice-versa.

Abstract
Aging is commonly regarded as a physiological process in which the dynamic complexity of physiological time series and organ systems is gradually lost. This notion is derived from the identification of a decline of nonlinear measures with the advance of aging. However, additional research on cardiovascular control studied through heart rate variability (HRV), i.e., the instantaneous changes in heart rate, shows that despite the constriction of its statistical distribution, the nonlinear organization remains present in advanced age. Here, we used surrogate data testing to investigate the presence of nonlinear information in HRV time series from a publicly available database of 1121 healthy human subjects from 18 to 92 years old. We also studied the influence of basic clinical features, such as sex, body mass index (BMI), and mean heart rate (HR), on such nonlinear information. We found that the percentage of nonlinear time series after 30 years of age diminishes significantly (p < 0.01). Furthermore, larger BMI and HR are associated with the presence of more linear information in HRV, while the female sex is associated with the manifestation of nonlinear information. This work provides a common background for the contextualized interpretation of nonlinear testing and shows that the nonlinear content of HRV time series diminishes through aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The daily working life of many employees requires the use of modern information and communication technology (ICT) devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. The double-edged nature of digital work environments has been increasingly highlighted. Benefits such as increased flexibility come at a personal cost. One of the potential downsides is workplace telepressure, i.e., the experience of urge and preoccupation to quickly reply to work-related messages and demands using ICT. There is initial - mainly survey-based-evidence that workplace telepressure may have negative effects on a variety of wellbeing and health outcomes. AIMS AND HYPOTHESES Adopting the Effort-Recovery Model and the concept of allostatic load as theoretical frameworks, the present study aims to investigate the hypothesis that workplace telepressure is significantly associated with increased "wear and tear", in the form of more psychosomatic complaints, worse sleep quality (self-reported and actigraphy-based), worse mood, and biological alterations (lower cardiac vagal tone, lower anabolic balance defined as the ratio of salivary dehydroepiandrosterone to salivary cortisol, and higher salivary alpha-amylase). Additionally, the study aims to investigate the hypothesis that connection to work defined as work-related workload and work-related perseverative cognition plays a significant role in the mediation of these relationships. METHODS To test our hypotheses, we will conduct an ambulatory assessment study with a convenience sample of 120 healthy workers regularly using ICTs for job communication. For one week, participants will be asked to complete electronic diaries assessing their level of workplace telepressure, psychosomatic complaints, sleep quality, mood, work-related workload, and work-related perseverative cognition. They will also continuously wear the Bittium Faros 180L ECG monitor, the wrist-worn actigraph MotionWatch 8, and perform saliva sampling five times per day. DISCUSSION This study will be the most comprehensive ambulatory investigation of workplace telepressure and its psychophysiological concomitants to date and constitutes an important step towards understanding how high levels of workplace telepressure may lead in the long term to secondary alterations (e.g., hypertension, chronic inflammation) and disease (e.g., heart disease). The findings of this study are also anticipated to contribute to guiding the development and implementation of interventions, programs, and policies relevant to employees' digital wellbeing.

Abstract
Obesity and stress are related to cardiovascular diseases. Rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) show increased cardiovascular reactivity to emotional stress and altered defensive behavioral responses. Indeed, changes in thermoregulatory responses in an aversive environment are observed in these animals. However, studies aimed at clarifying the physiological mechanisms linking obesity, stress hyperreactivity and behavioral changes are needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in thermoregulatory responses, heart rate, and the susceptibility to anxiety in obese animals subjected to stress. Nine-week high-fat diet protocol was effective in inducing obesity by increasing weight gain, fat mass, adiposity index, white epididymal, retroperitoneal, inguinal and brown adipose tissue. Animals induced to obesity and subjected to stress (HFDS group) by the intruder animal method showed increases in heart rate (HR), core body temperature and tail temperature. HFDS showed an increase in the first exposure to the closed arm (anxiety-like behavior) in elevated T-Maze (ETM). The groups did not differ with respect to panic behavior assessed in the ETM and locomotor activity in the open field test. Our study shows that HFDS animals presented increased reactivity to stress with higher stress hyperthermia and anxious behavior. Thus, our results present relevant information regarding stress responsiveness and behavioral changes in obese animals.

Effects of eating together online on autonomic nervous system functions: a randomized, open-label, controlled preliminary study among healthy volunteers. Biopsychosoc Med 2023; 17:10. Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating alone has been significantly associated with psychological distress. However, there is no research that evaluates the effects or relation of eating together online to autonomic nervous system functions. METHODS This is a randomized, open-label, controlled, pilot study conducted among healthy volunteers. Participants were randomized into either an eating together online group or an eating-alone group. The effect of eating together on autonomic nervous functions was evaluated and compared with that of the control (eating alone). The primary endpoint was the change in the standard deviation of the normal-to-normal interval (SDNN) scores among heart rate variabilities (HRV) before and after eating. Physiological synchrony was investigated based on changes in the SDNN scores. RESULTS A total of 31 women and 25 men (mean age, 36.6 [SD = 9.9] years) were included in the study. In the comparison between the aforementioned groups, two-way analysis of variance revealed interactions between time and group on SDNN scores. SDNN scores in the eating together online group increased in the first and second halves of eating time (F[1,216], P < 0.001 and F[1,216], P = 0.022). Moreover, high correlations were observed in the changes in each pair before and during the first half of eating time as well as before and during the second half of eating time (r = 0.642, P = 0.013 and r = 0.579, P = 0.030). These were statistically significantly higher than those in the eating-alone group (P = 0.005 and P = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS The experience of eating together online increased HRV during eating. Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The effects of calorie restriction and physical activity on autonomic regulation and cardiac vagal control in overweight and obese individuals remain inconsistent. Thus, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the weight loss effects through lifestyle changes on heart rate variability (HRV) markers in overweight and obese subjects. METHODS A systematic search for studies published up to November 2021 was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, EBSCO host and VHL REGIONAL/LILACS. The main outcomes were changes in HRV indices from pre- and post-nutritional intervention and exercise in overweight and obese individuals. This review was registered in PROSPERO: CRD42021274467. RESULTS The literature search retrieved 959 articles, of which 12 were included in this review. The intervention in nine studies was diet only, in two studies was diet and exercise, and in one study diet was compared to diet and exercise. The weight loss was greater than 10% in four studies and between 5 and 10% in three studies. Most of the studies revealed that weight loss through lifestyle changes seems to promote beneficial effects on HRV, restoring sympathovagal balance by increasing parasympathetic activity and reducing sympathetic activation. CONCLUSION This systematic review exhibited the beneficial effects of weight loss through lifestyle changes on cardiac autonomic control in overweight and obese individuals. Future investigations need standardization of HRV indices for better interpretation of autonomic function in different clinical situations.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that natural environments – whether in outdoor or indoor settings – foster psychological health and physiological relaxation, indicated by increased wellbeing, reduced stress levels, and increased parasympathetic activity. Greater insight into differential psychological aspects modulating psychophysiological responses to nature-based relaxation videos could help understand modes of action and develop personalized relaxation interventions. We investigated heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of autonomic regulation, specifically parasympathetic activity, in response to a 10-min video intervention in two consecutive studies as well as heart rate (HR). We hypothesized that a nature-based relaxation video elicits HRV increase and HR decrease, with response magnitude being affected by aspects of early life adversity (conceptualized as low parental care and high overprotection/constraint) and trait mindfulness. In Study 1, N = 60 participants (52% female, agemean = 23.92 ± 3.13 years, agerange = 18–34 years) watched a relaxation video intervention depicting different natural scenery. We analyzed changes in HR and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) as a standard HRV measure, both based on 3-min segments from the experimental session, in multiple growth curve models. We found a decrease in HR and increase of RSA during the video intervention. Higher paternal care and lower trait mindfulness observing skills (assessed via questionnaires) were associated with higher RSA values before but not during video exposure. In Study 2, N = 90 participants (50% female, agemean = 22.63 ± 4.57 years, agerange = 18–49 years) were assigned to three video conditions: natural scenery from Study 1, meditation video, or short clip from “The Lord of the Rings.” Again, HR decreased, and RSA increased during video segments, yet without expected group differences across different video types. We found higher parental care and lower parental overprotection to predict higher RSA at different times during the experiment. Interestingly, lower paternal overprotection predicted overall higher RSA. These results suggest a generic relaxation effect of video interventions on autonomic regulation that we discuss in light of different theories mapping restorative effects of natural environments. Further, psychological characteristics like aspects of early life adversity and trait mindfulness could contribute to individual differences in autonomic regulation. This study contributes to a better understanding of autonomic and psychological responses to relaxation videos.

Abstract
This review has summarized the methods currently available for cardiac sympathetic assessment in clinical or under research, with emphasis on the principles behind these methodologies. Heart rate variability (HRV) and other methods based on heart rate pattern analysis can reflect the dominance of sympathetic nerve to sinoatrial node function and indirectly show the average activity level of cardiac sympathetic nerve in a period of time. Sympathetic neurotransmitters play a key role of signal transduction after sympathetic nerve discharges. Plasma or local sympathetic neurotransmitter detection can mediately display sympathetic nerve activity. Given cardiac sympathetic nerve innervation, i.e., the distribution of stellate ganglion and its nerve fibers, stellate ganglion activity can be recorded either directly or subcutaneously, or through the surface of the skin using a neurophysiological approach. Stellate ganglion nerve activity (SGNA), subcutaneous nerve activity (SCNA), and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) can reflect immediate stellate ganglion discharge activity, i.e., cardiac sympathetic nerve activity. These cardiac sympathetic activity assessment methods are all based on the anatomy and physiology of the heart, especially the sympathetic innervation and the sympathetic regulation of the heart. Technological advances, discipline overlapping, and more understanding of the sympathetic innervation and sympathetic regulation of the heart will promote the development of cardiac sympathetic activity assessment methods.

Abstract
This study examined the alterations of heart rate variability (HRV) following iso-duration resistance (RES) and sprint-interval (SIE) exercises by comparing with that of non-exercise control (CON) in 14 non-obese (NOB) and 15 obese (OB) young men. Time and frequency domain measures as well as non-linear metrics of HRV were assessed before and immediately after exercise, and during every 20 min until 120 min post exercise. The variables during the first 4 hrs of actual sleep time at night, and the period of 12-14 hrs post exercise were also measured. All trials were scheduled at 20:00. It was found that RES and SIE attenuated the HRV in both NOB and OB (P <0.05), and the attenuated HRV restored progressively during subsequent recovery. Although the changes in HRV indices among various time points during the recovery period and its interaction across RES, SIE and CON were not different between NOB and OB, the restoration of the declined HRV indices to corresponding CON level in the two exercise trials in OB appeared to be sluggish in relative to NOB. Notwithstanding, post-exercise HRV that recorded during actual sleep at night and during 12-14 hrs apart from exercise were unvaried among the three trials in both groups (P>0.05). These findings suggest that obesity is likely to be a factor hindering the removal of exercise-induced cardiac autonomic disturbance in young men. Nonetheless, the declined HRV following both the RES and SIE protocols were well restored after a resting period of ~10 hrs regardless of obesity. Abstract
Background There have been mixed reports on the beneficial effects of meditation in cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is widely considered the leading cause of death worldwide. Methods To clarify the role of meditation in modulating the heart-brain axis, we implemented an extreme phenotype strategy, i.e., Tibetan monks (BMI > 30) who practised 19.20 ± 7.82 years of meditation on average and their strictly matched non-meditative Tibetan controls. Hypothesis-free advanced proteomics strategies (Data Independent Acquisition and Targeted Parallel Reaction Monitoring) were jointly applied to systematically investigate and target the plasma proteome underlying meditation. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] as the potential cardiovascular risk factors were evaluated. Heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed by electrocardiogram. Findings Obesity, hypertension, and reduced HRV is offset by long-term meditation. Notably, meditative monks have blood pressure and HRV comparable to their matched Tibetan controls. Meditative monks have a protective plasma proteome, related to decreased atherosclerosis, enhanced glycolysis, and oxygen release, that confers resilience to the development of CVD. In addition, clinical risk factors in plasma were significantly decreased in monks compared with controls, including total cholesterol, LDL-C, Apo B, and Lp(a). Interpretation To our knowledge, this work is the first well-controlled proteomics investigation of long-term meditation, which opens up a window for individuals characterized by a sedentary lifestyle to improve their cardiovascular health with an accessible method practised for more than two millennia. Abstract
BACKGROUND We recently described an association between reduced heart rate variability (HRV) and illness burden in bipolar disorder (BD) using a novel Illness Burden Index (IBI). We aimed to further characterize this association by using spectral analyses to assess whether the IBI is also associated with autonomic imbalance in BD patients. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 53 participants with BD wore a device for 24 h to assess association between HRV spectral measures and the IBI or each of its components (age of onset, number and type of previous episode(s), duration of the most severe episode, history of suicide attempts or psychotic symptoms during episodes, co-morbid psychiatric disorders, and family history). We ran both unadjusted models and models controlling for age, sex, years of education, marital status, BMI, pharmacotherapy, and baseline functional cardiovascular capacity. RESULTS HRV low-frequency (LF) normalized values were almost twice as high as published in healthy controls. Higher IBI was associated with higher LF and lower High Frequency (HF) values, resulting in a higher LF/HF ratio, indicating an increased sympathetic tone. Four individual components of the IBI were similarly associated with measures of increased sympathetic tone: earlier age of onset, number of depressive episodes, co-morbid anxiety disorders, and family history of suicide. Adjusted and unadjusted models had similar results. LIMITATIONS Our models used mean LF and HF and do not consider their dynamic variations over 24 h or phase of the illness. CONCLUSIONS Burden of illness is associated with increased sympathetic tone in patients with BD, putting them at risk for arrythmias and sudden death.

Abstract
Objective Cardiac autonomic function assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive, quantitative, and reliable marker of measurement. An altered cardiac autonomic function among overweight individuals predisposes them to a greater risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The present study aims to determine the correlation between physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and heart rate variability among young overweight adults. Methods A total of 45 participants (23 men and 22 women) were enrolled in the cross-sectional study with inclusion criteria as follows: aged between 18–30 years, body mass index (kg/m2) between 25–29.9 kg/m2, and without any known or diagnosed medical condition. Physical activity level and cardiorespiratory fitness were measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and Bruce treadmill protocol test, respectively. Cardiac autonomic function was measured using a 5-min short-term heart rate variability recording. The time and frequency domain measures of HRV were used for analysis. Results The mean age of study participants was 22.53 ± 1.58 years and mean body mass index was 27.38 ± 1.51 kg/m2. Among young overweight adults, cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity were not correlated with Root mean square of successive RR interval differences, Percentage of successive RR intervals that differ by more than 50 ms, and Ratio of LF [ms2]/HF [ms2]. Conclusion The study found no correlation between physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness with heart rate variability among young overweight individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim: To investigated the effect of a 3-month body weight correction program on the functional state of the ANS in children of primary school age who had an increased body mass index and signs of autonomic dysfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: 82 children aged 9 to 11 were examined. During 3 months, all examinees underwent a body weight correction course. Body composition was mea¬sured by the bioimpedance method using the body composition analyzer «TANITA-BC-601» (Japan). The functional state of autonomic regulation was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV) indicators obtained by recording standard 5-minute ECG intervals using the computer hardware and software complex "CARDIOLAB" (XAI-MEDICA, Ukraine). RESULTS Results: Statistical processing of HRV indicators showed that 51 children (62.2%) had signs of autonomic dysfunction. In the first group, there was a statistically significant decrease in body weight (from 47.33±4.62 to 44.12±3.96), BMI (from 28.15±2.64 to 26.63±2.87), TFC (from 33.54±3.68 to 30.89±2.81), VF (from 7.056±1.814 to 4.817±2.017) with a simultaneous statistically probable increase in the FFM index (from 60.27±2.47 to 63.15±2,38). According to the time domain indicators of HRV, children in first group have increased the TP of autonomous heart rhythm regulation, as indicated by a statistically significant increase in SDNN from 38.43±6.39 ms to 51.65±7.19 ms (р<0.05); the activity of the sympathetic link of the ANS decreased according to AMo from 41.23±6.17% to 34.29±5.83% (р<0.05) and the intensity of autonomic regulation according to IS, which decreased from 116.3±31,6 units to 81.2±29.1 units (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Conclusions: 3-month body weight correction program led to the elimination of signs of autonomic dysfunction in 43.9% of the examined persons.

Abstract
Affect detection combined with a system that dynamically responds to a person’s emotional state allows an improved user experience with computers, systems, and environments and has a wide range of applications, including entertainment and health care. Previous studies on this topic have used a variety of machine learning algorithms and inputs such as audial, visual, or physiological signals. Recently, a lot of interest has been focused on the last, as speech or video recording is impractical for some applications. Therefore, there is a need to create Human–Computer Interface Systems capable of recognizing emotional states from noninvasive and nonintrusive physiological signals. Typically, the recognition task is carried out from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, obtaining good accuracy. However, EEGs are difficult to register without interfering with daily activities, and recent studies have shown that it is possible to use electrocardiogram (ECG) signals for this purpose. This work improves the performance of emotion recognition from ECG signals using wavelet transform for signal analysis. Features of the ECG signal are extracted from the AMIGOS database using a wavelet scattering algorithm that allows obtaining features of the signal at different time scales, which are then used as inputs for different classifiers to evaluate their performance. The results show that the proposed algorithm for extracting features and classifying the signals obtains an accuracy of 88.8% in the valence dimension, 90.2% in arousal, and 95.3% in a two-dimensional classification, which is better than the performance reported in previous studies. This algorithm is expected to be useful for classifying emotions using wearable devices.
