Abstract
China has the largest acreage and is the greatest producer of apples in the world. Apple ring rot (ARR) caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea is one of the major diseases affecting apple fruit production. Tebuconazole, a sterol demethylation-inhibiting (DMI) fungicide, has been increasingly applied to manage ARR in China. Resistance to tebuconazole in field populations of B. dothidea may be selected and accumulate to higher degrees over time. Establishment of tebuconazole sensitivity monitoring programs is critically important for resistance management and effective ARR control. However, the resistance level of B. dothidea to tebuconazole in China remains largely unknown. In this study, in vitro mycelial growth assays of B. dothidea in media amended with tebuconazole were conducted, and the sensitivity of B. dothidea to tebuconazole was determined with a set of 390 isolates collected from the major apple production provinces in China between 2006 and 2014. Results showed that the 50% effective concentration (EC50) value ranged from 0.011 to 0.918, 0.040 to 1.621, and 0.052 to 1.925 μg ml-1 with a median value of 0.194, 0.386, and 0.782 μg ml-1 in the isolates collected in 2006, 2010, and 2014, respectively. The frequency distribution of EC50 for tebuconazole was a nonnormal distribution (P < 0.05), suggesting that subpopulations with reduced sensitivity to tebuconazole had emerged in these B. dothidea isolates. The frequency distribution of the B. dothidea isolates collected in 2006 fit a unimodal curve and could be regarded as the baseline sensitivity to tebuconazole. The resistance levels increased over time with the average occurrence frequency of 43.3% and resistance index of 0.38. Positive cross-resistance was observed between tebuconazole and metconazole, which is another DMI fungicide, but multiple resistance was not detected between tebuconazole and non-DMI fungicides. Our results demonstrated that regular long-term resistance monitoring combining with prudent fungicide use should be implemented to prolong the lifespan of tebuconazole in management of ARR in apples.

Abstract
‘Xinqihong’ is a recently selected and well-colored red pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) cultivar that is popular in the marketplace owing to the bright red color and high quality of the fruit. The red pigmentation is strongly associated with the light signal. However, its responses to bagging treatment and to light exposure after shading are unknown. In this study, the fruit were treated with three types of fruit bags. ’Xinqihong’ fruit colored rapidly in response to light stimulation. A white fruit bag was optimal for bagging of ‘Xinqihong’ fruit. To ensure satisfactory red pigmentation, the fruit required exposure to 30 days of light after bag removal. A transcriptome analysis was conducted to screen light-signal-related genes and identify their possible functions. PbCRY1 activated the promoter of PbHY5.2 and enhanced its expression. PbHY5.2 activated the promoter activity of PbUFGT and induced anthocyanin synthesis, and also showed self-activation characteristics. Both PbCRY2 and PbPHY1 induced anthocyanin accumulation. Thus, blue-light receptors played an important role in anthocyanin synthesis. This study provides a theoretical basis for the bagging cultivation of new varieties of ‘Xinqihong’, and lays a foundation for the study of the mechanisms of red pear fruit coloring in response to light signals.

Abstract
Apple trees are grown worldwide, and consuming fresh apple fruit is associated with many health benefits. China produces about half of the world's apple supply. However, apple growing in China differs sharply from that in western countries in terms of the prevalent diseases and corresponding management strategies. For instance, family-owned small-scale orchards dominate China's apple industry, and manual bagging of fruit has been a long-standing practice for controlling fruit diseases. In recent years, rural labor shortages have been increasingly challenging the traditional production system, and China's apple industry is experiencing a rapid transition to much larger-scale enterprises featuring high-density orchards with advanced automation and mechanization. Associated with this transition are new challenges and grower demands that are changing the face of apple disease management. This Feature Article summarizes the ongoing transformation of China's apple industry in the context of sustainable disease management.

Abstract
Bagging regulates the fruit microenvironment and improves the quality and market value of fruits. It is a safe and ecofriendly technique to protect fruits from insect/pest infestation and multiple biotic and abiotic stresses. In the current study, the influence of fruit bagging was evaluated on the development and quality of loquat fruits. Fruits from a healthy loquat orchard (Cv. Zaozhong No.6), located in Fujian, China, were enveloped in paper (T1), aluminum (T2), and aluminum-polyethylene bags (T3), while unbagged fruits were maintained as control (T0). In general, fruit bagging improved fruit quality in terms of fruit physiological and biochemical attributes and protected fruits from physical damage. In particular, aluminum-polyethylene bagging enhanced fruit weight, length, and width by 1.37-, 1.18-, and 1.13-fold, respectively. Loquat fruits bagged with paper bags exhibited the maximum soluble sugar and lowest titratable acid content. Fruits treated with paper and aluminum-ethylene bags showed twofold higher sugar-acid ratio as compared to control. Aluminum-polyethylene bagging caused 66.67%, 55.56%, and 33.33% reductions in skin burn, fruit rotting, and black spot of loquat. The fruits bagged in aluminum and aluminum-polyethylene did not show insect or bird damage, while unbagged fruits had 14.70% and 17.65% insect and bird damage, respectively. Overall, the results suggest that paper, aluminum, and aluminum-polyethylene bagging improved fruit health by 75%, 131%, and 144%, respectively, as compared to control. To delineate bagging type-dependent effects, principal component analysis was performed. Paper bagging was positively correlated with fruit firmness, rotting, soluble sugars, sugar-acid ratio, and proline content. Aluminum bagging was highly associated with improvements in titratable acids, cystine, and methionine. Aluminum-polyethylene bags were correlated with fruit weight, size, peel thickness, edible rate, and certain amino acids.

Abstract
The various fungal communities that adhere to apple fruit are influenced by agricultural practices. However, the effects of fruit bagging-based management practice on the fungal microbiota are still unknown, and little is known about the fungal communities of bagged apple fruit. We conducted a study using apple fruit grown in a conventionally managed orchard where pesticide use is an indispensable practice. Fungal communities were collected from the calyx-end and peel tissues of bagged and unbagged fruit and characterized using barcode-type next-generation sequencing. Fruit bagging had a stronger effect on fungal richness, abundance, and diversity of the fungal microbiota in comparison to non-bagging. In addition, bagging also impacted the compositional variation of the fungal communities inhabiting each fruit part. We observed that fruit bagging had a tendency to maintain ecological equilibrium since Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were more distributed in bagged fruit than in unbagged fruit. These fungal communities consist of beneficial fungi rather than potentially harmful fungi. Approximately 50 dominant taxa were detected in bagged fruit, for example, beneficial genera such as Articulospora, Bullera, Cryptococcus, Dioszegia, Erythrobasidium, and Sporobolomyces, as well as pathogenic genera such as Aureobasidium and Taphrina. These results suggested that fruit bagging could significantly increase fungal richness and promote healthy fungal communities, especially the harmless fungal communities, which might be helpful for protecting fruit from the effects of pathogens. This study provides a foundation for understanding the impacts of bagging-based practice on the associated fungal microbiota.

Abstract
Simple Summary The white mango scale Aulacaspis tubercularis is an invasive pest that causes important damage to mango crops in Southern Spain. The use of integrated management strategies (cultural, biological, and chemical control) is recommended for its effective and sustainable management. Among cultural control measures, fruit bagging technology is being widely used in some mango production regions prior to harvest to protect fruit from diseases, pests, and mechanical damage. However, despite the proven efficacy of bagging, its usefulness has still not been proved to control A. tubercularis infestations on mango fruits. In this study, we evaluated not only the mango bagging efficacy on A. tubercularis control but also its effects on the development and quality of bagged fruits. We tested two commercial types of bags (a yellow satin paper bag and a white muslin cloth bag) commonly used to cover several other fruits. Both bags were effective in reducing the pest incidence and damage caused by A. tubercularis when mango fruits were bagged before the scales migrated to them. Our findings indicate that the use of bags for the pre-harvest protection of mango fruits is feasible, and it may improve their development (weight and size) and quality (color and soluble solids). Abstract Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is the main pest of mango, Mangifera indica L., in Spain, causing significant economic losses by aesthetic damage that reduce the commercial value of fruit. Bagging fruit with two commercial bags (a yellow satin paper and a white muslin cloth bag) was evaluated for control of A. tubercularis in two organic mango orchards during the 2020 cropping season in pursuit of the development of a mango IPM program to produce pest-free and residue-free fruits. Results from fruit damage evaluations at harvest showed that bagging significantly reduced pest incidence and fruit damage compared with non-bagged plots. Of the two bags evaluated, white muslin cloth bag provided higher levels of fruit protection from A. tubercularis damage, reducing the non-commercial fruit percentage by up to 93.42%. Fruit quality assessment indicated that weight and size of bagged fruit were significantly higher than the non-bagged. Paper-bagged mangoes showed higher whiteness and yellowness compared to the other treatments. Soluble solids content (ºBrix) was higher in paper-bagged fruit than all other treatment plots. The results from this study indicate that pre-harvest fruit bagging is effective at controlling A. tubercularis and should be integrated into an IPM program for Spanish mango production.

Abstract
Fruit quality is certainly influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, and a main quality attribute is the external appearance of the fruit. Various possible agronomical approaches are able to regulate the fruit microenvironment and, consequently, improve fruit quality and market value. Among these, fruit bagging has recently become an integral part of fruits' domestic and export markets in countries such as Japan, China, Korea Australia and the USA because it is a safe and eco-friendly technique to protect fruits from multiple stresses, preserving or improving the overall quality. Despite increasing global importance, the development of suitable bagging materials and, above all, their use in the field is quite laborious, so that serious efforts are required to enhance and standardize bagging material according to the need of the crops/fruits. This review provides information about the effects of bagging technique on the fruit aspect and texture, which are the main determinants of consumer choice.

Abstract
The pesticide use in Indian agriculture showed a declining trend in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Since 2007, pesticide use gained an upward trend. To study the pesticide use pattern and identify pesticide hotspots, we collected data from a sample of 1201 apple, rice, vegetable, and cotton growers from the temperate Kashmir Valley, subtropical Jammu, and Punjab. Our study provided some interesting empirical results: prophylactic pesticide applications in apple crop making it a pesticide guzzler [25.2 kg of active ingredient (ai)/ha] with use of riskiest carcinogen pesticides (9 kg of a.i/ha) and field use environmental impact quotient (FEIQ) (620.4/ha) being the highest, the Kashmir Valley is the "pesticide hottest spot", followed by cotton and rice areas of Punjab and vegetable cultivation in Jammu subtropics. Pesticides banned for use in vegetables, such as monocrotophos were also applied by farmers in vegetable crops. However, rice areas in Kashmir and Jammu were only treated with herbicides. The protective measures taken by farmers while mixing and applying pesticides were primitive, resulting in localized mild/moderate pesticide poisoning besides loss of consciousness. We also found that the official data on the pesticide use are underreported and hence unreliable. Our study shows that neither the pesticide use by mass nor the pesticide use frequency, in combination or alone, is the robust indicator to measure the pesticide hazardous hotspots; besides these, FEIQ and less hazardous pesticides that are not probable or possible carcinogen should be rather used in conjunction.

Abstract
Small-scale farms are an important component of agricultural production even in developed economies, and have an acknowledged role in providing other biological and societal benefits, including the conservation of agricultural biodiversity and enhancement of local food security. Despite this, the small-farm sector is currently underserved in relation to the development and implementation of scale-appropriate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices that could help increase such benefits. This review details some of the characteristics of the small farm sectors in developed economies (with an emphasis on the USA and Europe), and identifies some of the characteristics of small farms and their operators that may favor the implementation of IPM. Some of the challenges and opportunities associated with increasing the uptake of IPM in the small-farm sector are discussed. For example, while some IPM tactics are equally applicable to virtually any scale of production, there are others that may be easier (or more cost-effective) to implement on a smaller scale. Conversely, there are approaches that have not been widely applied in small-scale production, but which nevertheless have potential for use in this sector. Examples of such tactics are discussed. Knowledge gaps and opportunities for increasing IPM outreach to small-scale producers are also identified.
