Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, presenting an increasing public health challenge, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. However, data on the knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding breast cancer and the associated factors among females in Wollo, Ethiopia, remain limited. AIM To assess the impact of family history (FH) of breast disease on knowledge, attitudes, and breast cancer preventive practices among reproductive-age females. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in May and June 2022 in Northeast Ethiopia and involved 143 reproductive-age females with FH of breast diseases and 209 without such a history. We selected participants using the systematic random sampling technique. We analyzed the data using Statistical Package for Social Science version 25 software, and logistic regression analysis was employed to determine odds ratios for variable associations, with statistical significance set at P < 0.05. RESULTS Among participants with FH of breast diseases, the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices were found to be 83.9% [95% confidence interval (CI): 77.9-89.9], 49.0% (95%CI: 40.8-57.1), and 74.1% (95%CI: 66.9-81.3), respectively. In contrast, among those without FH of breast diseases, these levels were significantly decreased to 10.5% (95%CI: 6.4-14.7), 32.1% (95%CI: 25.7-38.4), and 16.7% (95%CI: 11.7-21.8), respectively. This study also indicated that knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices related to breast cancer are significantly higher among participants with FH of breast diseases compared to those without HF breast diseases. CONCLUSION Educational status, monthly income, and community health insurance were identified as significant factors associated with the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding breast cancer among reproductive-age females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Pharmacogenomics (PGx) leverages genomic information to tailor drug therapies, enhancing precision medicine. Despite global advancements, its implementation in Lebanon, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia faces unique challenges in clinical integration. This study aimed to investigate PGx attitudes, knowledge implementation, associated challenges, forecast future educational needs, and compare findings across the three countries. METHODS This cross-sectional study utilized an anonymous, self-administered online survey distributed to healthcare professionals, academics, and clinicians in Lebanon, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. The survey comprised 18 questions to assess participants' familiarity with PGx, current implementation practices, perceived obstacles, potential integration strategies, and future educational needs. RESULTS The survey yielded 337 responses from healthcare professionals across the three countries. Data revealed significant variations in PGx familiarity and educational involvement. Qatar and Saudi Arabia participants were more familiar with PGx compared to Lebanon (83%, 75%, and 67%, respectively). Participation in PGx-related talks was most prevalent in Saudi Arabia (96%), followed by Qatar (53%) and Lebanon (35%). Key challenges identified included test cost and reimbursement, insufficient physician knowledge, and lack of infrastructure. Lebanon reported the highest concern for test costs (16%), compared to the lowest in Saudi Arabia (5%). Despite these challenges, a strong consensus emerged on PGx's potential to improve patient outcomes, with over 86% of respondents in all three countries expressing this belief. Educational interest areas varied by country, with strong interest in PGx for cancer chemotherapy in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon and for diabetes mellitus in Qatar. CONCLUSION This study highlights the significant influence of varied educational backgrounds and infrastructural limitations on PGx implementation across Lebanon, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. The findings emphasize the need for targeted strategies in each country to address these distinct barriers. Integrating PGx education into healthcare training programs and clinical workflows could unlock PGx's potential to optimize patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Colon cancer poses a significant health burden, with current treatments often associated with severe side effects and limited effectiveness for some patients. Natural products are gaining interest as adjuvant therapies, potentially reducing side effects and improving responses to conventional treatments. We previously highlighted the potent antineoplastic effects of organic extracts derived from the Lebanese red algae Jania rubens. This study, investigated the anticancer activities of polysaccharide, protein, and lipid extracts from J. rubens, which may serve as adjuvant therapies to enhance conventional treatments. METHODS we employed colorimetric assays, wound healing assays, and cell cycle analysis to evaluate the anticancer activities of the extracts. The polysaccharide extract was characterized for sulfate content and structure using barium chloride-gelatin and FT-IR methods. RESULTS All J. rubens extracts exhibited significant anticancer effects, with the polysaccharide extract showing particularly strong cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, and antiproliferative and anti-migratory activities. CONCLUSION These findings confirm that J. rubens is a source of bioactive compounds with anticancer potential. Further investigations are needed to elucidate the molecular pathways targeted by J. rubens extracts in cancer cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chemobrain is a well-established clinical syndrome that has become an increasing concern because of the growing number of long-term cancer survivors. It refers to the post-chemotherapy related cognitive dysfunction. The aim of this study was to objectively assess the impact of cancer treatment on the cognition of cancer patients. METHODS This was a convenience sample comparative study conducted at the Hematology and Oncology Department of Hôtel Dieu de France University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. It included cancer patients (G1) aged under 65 years who had already been treated for cancer compared to two control groups. The first control group (G2) consisted of treatment-naïve cancer patients aged under 65, and the second group (G3) was recruited from a pool of healthy controls aged between 40 and 65 years. All participants were asked to complete the part B of the trail making test (TMT) and the digital symbolic substitution test (DSST). RESULTS In the bivariate analysis, patients in G1 had significantly higher scores than patients in G2 (P=0.017) and G3 (P<0.001) on the TMT-B. However, patients in G1 only had lower scores on DSST when compared with G3 (P=0.017). In the logistic regression taking different groups two-by-two as the dependent variable, the only significant difference was found in the comparison between G2 and G3 with higher TMT-B scores more in favor of belonging to G2 (OR=0.946; P=0.003). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that, after controlling for anxiety and depression symptoms, patients treated with chemotherapy have significantly poorer outcomes on the DSST and TMT-B than treatment-naïve cancer patients and healthy controls. However, when taking confounding factors into account, the difference only persisted between patients undergoing chemotherapy and healthy controls. These findings are in favor of a multifactor cognitive impairment in patients with cancer partially related to chemotherapeutic treatment.

Abstract
Background: Ethnic minority women in the United States continue to experience racial disparities. Immigrant Arab women (IAW) underutilize mammography screening (MS) even compared with other ethnic minorities. This population still has gaps in knowledge regarding breast cancer (BC) and screening methods and encounters social barriers, highlighting the imperative role of the male figure and the family, which hinders screening. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional design with an exploratory and predictive approach was employed to examine knowledge gaps and perceived social barriers associated with MS and to identify predictive factors of MS among IAW in California. The analysis included 316 women that met the eligibility criteria. Results: Familiarity with MS and awareness of screening recommendations were the specific areas of knowledge significantly associated with mammography uptake (odds ratio [OR] 15.4, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.6-40.8, p < 0.001) and (OR 12.07, 95% CI: 7-21, p < 0.001), respectively. Logistic regression revealed three MS predictors, the two knowledge areas and age. Perceived social barriers were significantly associated with age [F (3,312) = 4.684, p = 0.003]. There was a significant difference in social barriers between women in their 40s and those in their 60s (p = 0.002) and between women in their 50s and those in their 60s (p = 0.003), suggesting lower barriers among women in their 60s (M = 14.3). Living status was significantly associated with perceived social barriers [F (1,314) = 8.83, p = 0.003]. Conclusions: This study offered valuable insights for health care professionals, policymakers, and community organizations working to improve BC early detection in immigrant and ethnic women to reduce social disparities and reinforce social justice. Knowledge-deficit areas and social barriers must be analyzed and incorporated in awareness programs to improve screening practices of IAW.

Abstract
Cancer may be considered one of the most interesting areas of study, and although oncology research has grown markedly over the last decade, there is as yet no known cure for cancer. The objective of the present review is to examine various approaches to cancer research from a single institution, summarize their key conclusions and offer recommendations for future evaluations. The review examined 72 cancer-associated studies that were published within six years from 2017 to 2022. Published works in the subject fields of 'cancer' or 'oncology' and 'research' that were indexed in Scopus and Web of Science were retrieved and sorted according to article title, author names, author count, citation count and key words. After screening, a total of 28 in vitro/animal studies and 46 patient-associated published studies were obtained. A large proportion of these studies comprised literature reviews (20/72), while 20 studies were observational in nature. The 72 publications included 23 in which various types of cancer were examined, while the remaining studies focused on specific types of cancer, including lung, breast, colon and brain cancer. These studies aimed to investigate the incidence, prevalence, treatment and prevention mechanisms associated with cancer. Despite the existence of extensive cancer research, scientists seldom contemplate an ultimate cure for cancer. However, it is crucial to continuously pursue research on cancer prevention and treatment in order to enhance the effectiveness and minimize potential side effects of cancer therapy.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a global health concern that significantly impacts the quality of life (QOL) of individuals. This study aims to comprehensively examine the interplay between QOL and depression among nonmetastatic breast cancer patients in Lebanon, a region with limited research in this context. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hammoud Hospital-University Medical Center from January 2018 to January 2023. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed as Google Forms via WhatsApp. A total of 193 patients had non-metastatic breast cancer. Out of these, 81 valid responses were obtained. The Patient Health Questionnaire and Quality of Life Scale were used to assess depression and QOL, respectively. A total of 81 patients were included with mean age 54.4 years. Results revealed that 77.8% of patients experienced provisional depression, with 35.8% meeting criteria for major depressive disorder. Financial status and chronic diseases were associated with the likelihood of developing major depressive disorder. The mean QOL score was 81.14, lower than the average for healthy individuals. Educational level and presence of chronic diseases were significant factors influencing QOL. Postsurgical depression prevalence is substantial, underscoring the importance of integrating mental health care. Economic status and comorbidities are influential factors, necessitating targeted interventions. Breast cancer's impact on QOL is profound, falling below that of other chronic conditions. Education empowers coping, while comorbidities impact QOL. Our findings emphasize the multidimensional nature of breast cancer care, advocating for holistic support and addressing emotional well-being.

Abstract
Research has identified both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for breast cancer (BC), with accumulating evidence showing that adopting adequate dietary practices could decrease the risk of this disease. This study aimed to assess nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and lifestyle practices (KAP) that may lead to BC risk reduction among female university students in Lebanon and examine the determinants of their practices. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sampling method, comprising 356 (response rate: 71.2%) female students at the American University of Beirut aged 18 to 25 years with no history of BC. Participants completed a pre-tested questionnaire addressing the objectives of the study. The modified Bloom's cut-off of 75% was used to categorize knowledge and practice scores as poor or good and attitudes as negative or positive. Large proportions of students had poor knowledge (68.3%), negative attitudes (65.4%), and poor practices (98.0%) scores. Pursuing a health-related major and having a higher GPA were associated with better knowledge and attitudes while being older and having a lower degree of stress were associated with positive attitudes only. Having a lower body mass index (BMI) was associated with better practice scores. Better knowledge significantly predicted higher intake of fruits and vegetables. Overall knowledge and attitudes were significantly correlated with each other, but neither was significantly correlated with overall practice. These findings underscore the importance of implementing public health programs geared towards improving nutrition KAP that may lead to BC risk reduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explores the incidence and trends of breast (Bca), corpus uteri (CUca), and ovarian (Oca) cancer in Lebanon, a Middle Eastern country. It compares the Bca rates to regional and global ones and discusses Bca risk factors in Lebanon. INTRODUCTION Globally, Bca is the premier cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in women. METHODS Data on female Bca, CUca, and Oca published by the Lebanese national cancer registry were obtained (ie, for the years of 2005 to 2016). The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRw) and age-specific rates per 100,000 female population were computed. RESULTS From 2005 to 2016, Bca, Oca, and CUca ranked first, sixth, and seventh, respectively, for cancer incidence among women in Lebanon. Bca alone accounted for 39.4% of all new female cancer cases. The ASIRw increased significantly for Bca and CUca (APC: 3.60 and 3.73, P < .05) but not for Oca (APC: 1.27, P > .05). The Bca ASIRw (per 100,000) increased significantly from 71.0 in 2005 to 115.6 in 2013 (P < .05), then decreased steadily but non-significantly to reach 96.8 in 2016 (P > .05). Lebanon's Bca ASIRw is comparable to developed countries. This may reflect altered sociological and reproductive patterns as the country transitions from regional to global trends. The five-year age-specific rates analysis revealed that Bca rates rose steeply from 35-39 to 50-54, dropped slightly between 55 and 64, then rose till 75+. The five-year age-specific rates between 35 and 54 among Lebanese women were amongst the highest worldwide from 2008 to 2012, even higher than the rates in Belgium, which had the highest ASIRw of Bca worldwide in 2020. CONCLUSION Lebanon's Bca ASIRw is among the highest globally. It's important to investigate the contributing factors and develop a national Bca control strategy. This study supports the national recommendation in initiating Bca screening at age 40 for women.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the commonest cancer in Saudi males and the third most common in Saudi females. Although CRC represents a major public health challenge, the resources to evaluate its burden are inadequate. This study aims to elucidate the magnitude of CRC incidence trends in the Saudi population by age, gender, and administrative region. Data for multiple incidence measures were analyzed from the Saudi Cancer Registry (SCR) retrospectively from 2001 to 2018. Temporal trends were further analyzed by age group, gender, administrative region, and globally using joinpoint regression analysis. The number of CRC cases climbed by 335.6% and the disease increased by 56.4% to comprise 12.2% of all cancers cases. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) increased by 152% overall, and the median age at diagnosis peaked at 60 and 58 years for males and females, respectively. Riyadh and the Eastern Region had the highest ASR for both genders, peaking at 21.8 and 19.2 for males and 17.4 and 16.5 for females per 100 K population. Our prediction model identified growing trends with annual percentage changes (APCs) of 4.59% in males (CI: 3.1-6.1) and 3.91% among females (CI: 2.4-5.5). Males above 75 years had the highest APC (7.9%, CI: 5.3-10.7), whereas the highest APC among females was found in the age group 70-74 (5.4%, CI: 2.8-8). Globally, APC was the highest for both genders compared to selected countries. CRC incidence is increasing alarmingly in Saudi Arabia and is projected to continue. There is a need for better screening strategies, preventative measures, and awareness-building.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a significant global concern, with tamoxifen, the standard treatment, raising long-term safety issues due to side effects. In this study, we evaluated the potential of five onoceranoid triterpenes from Lansium domesticum Corr. cv. kokosan against estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) using in silico techniques. Utilizing molecular docking, Lipinski's rule of five, in silico ADMET, and molecular dynamics simulations, we assessed the potency of five onoceranoid triterpenes against ERα. Molecular docking indicated competitive binding energies for these triterpenes relative to the active form of tamoxifen (4OHT) and estradiol, an ERα native ligand. Three triterpenes met drug-likeness criteria with favorable ADMET profiles. Notably, 2 demonstrated superior binding affinity in molecular dynamics simulations, outperforming estradiol, closely followed by 3 and 4. Hierarchical clustering on principal components (HCPC) and the spatial distribution of contact surface area (CSA) analyses suggest that these triterpenes, especially 2, may act as antagonist ligands akin to 4OHT. These findings highlight the potential of onoceranoid triterpenes in treating ERα-related breast cancer.

Abstract
Refugees and displaced groups have been shown to face increased risk of developing advanced cancer stages. This has been shown to be evident in Lebanon, whereby refugees are detected at later stages when compared to the Lebanese population. Lebanon is one of the biggest host (per capita) of refugees worldwide, and suffers from difficult political situation, compounded by an economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and a blast which hit the capital Beirut in 2020. The main determinants of poor health outcomes among migrant populations in Lebanon include a fragmented and inequitable healthcare system and legal constraints to healthcare accessibility. The health care system is largely privatised with multiple health systems operating simultaneously for different nationalities. The current multi-crisis situation has exacerbated the fragility of the health system and its ability to cope with increasing needs. On the other hand, legal constraints for refugees to obtain residency in Lebanon has also contributed to insufficient access to health care and poor health outcomes among this population. Health system reforms, improved emergency preparedness and response measures, and an ease on legal and political restrictions for the refugee populations in Lebanon are considered key policy recommendations to ensure refugees right to health in Lebanon.

Abstract
Background/Objectives Breast neoplasm is one of the most common cancers in Iranian women due to the late diagnosis. Awareness of breast neoplasm and using Breast Self-Examination (BSE) assist in the early detection and treatment of cancer. This study examined the effectiveness of video-based multimedia training versus face-to-face training in awareness of breast neoplasm and BSE and possible factors affecting their effectiveness.
Methods This research was a pre-test, a post-test experimental study comparing the knowledge, attitude, and performance of women about BSE across two training intervention groups (face-to-face versus video-based multimedia). The study was conducted at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), and 100 women between 20 to 60 years old were allocated to each intervention group via multi-stage cluster sampling (n:110). Three valid and reliable researcher-made questioners were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 with independent t-test, paired t-test, and ANOVA. Results Both video-based multimedia and face-to-face training methods significantly increased the participant's knowledge, attitude, and skills about breast self-examination (P < 0.001). In the sub-categories, the results showed that the face-to-face training improved negligence and forgetfulness in applying BSE (P = 0.03) and correcting or modifying the previous knowledge around the issue (P = 0.02). The effect of the video-based method on participants with university education was more than on non-university (P = 0.04). Conclusion Incorporating video-based multimedia training in awareness of breast neoplasm and breast self-examination provides an easy, flexible, and affordable way for detection, particularly considering crisis restrictions. This can be of particular attention in more populated, developing/low-income countries and rural and remote areas to enhance equitable access to training and facilitation diagnosis and treatment if applicable.

Abstract
Background There is no region-specific publication investigating the attributable burden of breast cancer, particularly among females. This article reported the burden of female breast cancer in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and its attributable risk factors between 1990 and 2019, by age, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Methods Publicly available data on the incidence, death and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study for the 21 countries and territories in MENA, between 1990 and 2019, along with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). The relationship between the burden of female breast cancer, in terms of DALYs, and the SDI were also assessed using Smoothing Spline models. Results In 2019, the regional age-standardised incidence and death rates of female breast cancer were 37.5 and 15.2 per 100,000, which represent a 90.9 and 24.0% increase since 1990, respectively. In addition, in 2019 the regional age-standardised DALY rate was 472.7 per 100,000, which was 19.5% higher than in 1990. In 2019, the death rate increased steadily with advancing age, while the DALY rate increased steeply with age and reached its peak in the 70–74 age group. There was a positive association between SDI and the burden of breast cancer over the period 1990 to 2019. Moreover, in 2019 high fasting plasma glucose (6.9%) contributed to the largest proportion of attributable DALYs for female breast cancer in the MENA region. Conclusions There was a significant increase in the incidence rate of female breast cancer in MENA over the past three decades, although the death and DALY rates were both largely unchanged. Preventive programs targeting the major risk factors should be implemented in the region. Abstract
Background and Objectives: Breast cancer is considered the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among women globally and in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to assess breast cancer incidence patterns and trends among the Saudi female population. Materials and Methods: Breast cancer incidence parameters were obtained from the Saudi Cancer Registry (SCR). The data were retrospectively analyzed for the period from 2001 to 2017 to investigate changes in incidence rates. Temporal trends were also analyzed through joinpoint regression analysis and were dissected by age groups and administrative regions. Results: During the specified period, breast cancer jumped by 55% to constitute 30.9% of all cancer cases among Saudi females. The median age at diagnosis increased to reach 51 years at the end of that period, with an overall increase of 6.3%. The overall Age-Standardized Incidence Rate (ASR) escalated by 151.7% from 11.8/100,000 to 29.7/100,000 population for that period. The Eastern region noticeably had the highest ASR and peaked at 52.2/100,000 population. The joinpoint analysis of the ASR showed increased trends, with an annual percent change (APC) of 5.13% (p < 0.05, [95% CI 4−6.3]). An age-specific analysis was also performed and showed that the age group 70−74 years had the highest trend (APC 10.2%, [95% CI 7.2−13.4], p < 0.05). Region-specific analysis revealed that the Jouf region had the highest trend among the regions (APC 8.8%, [95% CI 3.7−14.2], p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our analysis indicates increased breast cancer incidence in Saudi Arabia with an alarming pace. With the existing trend, it is expected that Saudi Arabia will continue to display an increase in breast cancer incidence. Long-term preventive measures and more effective screening strategies are warranted to alleviate the burden of the disease.

Abstract
Purpose Over the last decade, Lebanon has experienced an increase in the rate of cancer patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence rates of ovarian cancer in Lebanese women over a period of 12 years and to compare them to other countries. Methods Data were collected from the Lebanese National Cancer Registry for the time period 2005-2016 (inclusive). Data from other countries were retrieved from an online database 'Cancer Incidence in Five Continents'. The age-specific and age-standardised incidence rates (ASIR) were calculated and analysed using Joinpoint regression. Results Ovarian cancer ranked seventh among the commonest cancers in Lebanese women in the studied time frame. Approximately 189 new cases were reported every year, with an average age-standardised incidence rate of 7.88 (per 100,000 women). Ovarian cancer showed a significantly decreasing trend in the 12 years of study. Lebanon had one of the highest ASIR for ovarian cancer among regional countries and randomly selected countries. Conclusion Lebanon presented a high ASIR for ovarian cancer compared to regional countries, and was placed among the top ASIRs compared to countries worldwide. However, with the decreasing ovarian cancer trends, it is important to implement efficacious awareness in order to detect all OC cases.

Background The role of young age (< 40 years) at diagnosis as an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in female patients with breast cancer has been highlighted in several studies. In this prospective study, we assessed the difference in 10-year survival between two groups of patients diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer based on an age cutoff of 40 years. We also assessed the impact of factors including tumor characteristics, molecular markers and immunohistochemical markers on survival outcomes, highlighting the interaction of those variables with age. Methods A total of 119 female patients with newly diagnosed non-metastatic breast cancer were recruited at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) between July 2011 and May 2014. Patients were recruited and divided into 2 age groups (< 40 and ≥ 40 years). In addition to clinical characteristics, we assessed immunohistochemistry including estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors, p53, cyclin B1, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), and ki-67. Germline BRCA mutations were also performed on peripheral blood samples. Patient and tumor characteristics were compared between the age groups. 10-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were estimated accordingly. Cox regression analysis was performed in order to assess the effect of the different variables on clinical outcomes. Results After a median Follow-up of 96 (13–122) months, the estimated 10-year OS was 98.6% for patients ≥40 as compared to 77.6% in patients < 40 (p = 0.001). A similar trend was found for 10-year DFS reaching 90% for patients ≥40 and 70.4% for those < 40 (p = 0.004). On multivariate analysis for DFS and OS, only younger age (< 40 years), higher stage and triple negative phenotype among other parameters assessed significantly affected the outcome in this cohort. Conclusion This prospective study confirms the association between younger age and adverse survival outcomes in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer. Future studies of the whole genome sequences may reveal the genomic basis underlying the clinical differences we have observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the past few decades, Lebanon has witnessed a significant increase in the incidence rates of women diagnosed with breast cancer. This increase, which is associated with the advancements in treatment modalities, emphasizes the need to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of women with breast cancer and to compare its patterns before and after breast-conserving surgery (BCS). OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe changes in HRQoL according to body image pre- and post-BCS and just before initiation of adjuvant therapy in newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer in Lebanon. METHODS A prospective cohort study targeting Lebanese women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and who have an indication for BCS will be conducted in 2 health care facilities. Baseline characteristics and clinical data will be collected. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality-of-Life cancer-specific and breast cancer-specific questionnaires will be used to assess HRQoL. The outcomes will be measured at baseline and 1 day after breast surgery. The primary outcome will be the body image dimensions of the Quality-of-Life breast cancer-specific questionnaire. Statistical analyses will include descriptive statistics, paired 2-tailed t test, and stepwise multiple regression. A total of 120 patients will be required. RESULTS A total of 120 patients were enrolled in the study. Future outcomes will be published in professional peer-reviewed health-related research journals. CONCLUSIONS This study is strengthened by its follow-up nature, allowing us to draw conclusions about causality. The results of this study will identify the most affected components of HRQoL, as well as the factors that could play a role in improving HRQoL among women undergoing BCS. The findings of this study will help decision makers, physicians, and social workers to design a comprehensive program with multidisciplinary components for the management and care of patients with breast cancer in Lebanon. Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the second overall, following lung cancer. Breast cancer can occur at any age, with an increased incidence in women 40 years and above. Worldwide the incidence is around 1 million cases per year, 60% of the cases reported from low- and middle-income countries. The current study was conducted to determine knowledge, attitude, and practices related to breast cancer, the associated risk factors, and screening methods in women presenting to a health care facility from resource-poor settings in Pakistan. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was used, and participants were recruited phase-wise from three major outpatient departments (OPDs) (Gynecology and Obstetrics OPD, Medical OPD, and Surgical OPD). Data were collected through the validated "Breast Cancer Awareness Measure" developed by Cancer Research UK, King's College London, and University College London in 2009. Data were analyzed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS) version 23.0. Students's T-Test, ANOVA, and linear regression analysis were conducted. RESULTS A total of 430 women were invited for participation in the study from the 3 main OPDs, and 400 took part in the study (response rate = 93.02%). The mean age of the women was 33.62 years ± 12.3 years, and the mean years of formal education were 5.05 ± 6.3 years. Less than a quarter of the participants were aware of the breast cancer warning signs, and 23.3% recognized the pain in the armpit or one of the breasts as a sign of breast cancer. The proportion of women aware of age-related and lifetime risk of getting breast cancer was 15.0%. Furthermore, only 2.5% performed breast self-examination at least once a month. Women identified many barriers like embarrassment, transport, and confidentiality issues in seeking medical help. CONCLUSION Overall, women had poor knowledge of breast cancer, related warning signs, breast self-examination, risk factors, and screening methods.

Abstract
Background High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are present and can cooperate with Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) to initiate and/or enhance the progression of several types of human carcinomas including cervical as well as head and neck; in parallel, it has been recently pointed out that these oncoviruses can be detected in human breast cancers. Thus, we herein explored the presence/co-presence of high-risk HPVs and EBV in breast cancer in Lebanese women. Methods A cohort of 102 breast cancer samples and 14 normal breast tissues were assessed for the presence of HPVs and EBV. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis in addition to tissue microarray (TMA) platform were used in this study. Results We found the presence of HPV in 66/102 (65%) of our samples, while EBV is present in 41/102 (40%) of the cohort. Additionally, our data showed that high-risk HPV types (52, 35, 58, 45, 16 and 51) are the most frequent in breast cancer in Lebanese women. Meanwhile, we report that high-risk HPVs and EBV are co-present in 30/102 (29%) of the samples; more significantly, our results indicate that their co-presence is associated with tumor grade (p = 0.03). Conclusion Our data revealed that HPVs and EBV are present/co-present in human breast cancer where they may play an important role in its development and/or progression; thus, we believe that further investigations are essential to confirm and elucidate the presence/co-presence of these oncoviruses and the underlying mechanisms of their interaction in breast carcinogenesis.

Abstract
In recent years, developments in breast cancer have allowed yet another realization of individualized medicine in the field of oncology. One of these advances is genomic assays, which are considered elements of standard clinical practice in the management of breast cancer. These assays are widely used today not only to measure recurrence risk in breast cancer patients at an early stage but also to tailor treatment as well and minimize avoidable treatment side effects. At present, genomic tests are applied extensively in node negative disease. In this article, we review the use of these tests in node positive disease, explore their ramifications on neoadjuvant chemotherapy decisions, highlight sufficiently powered recent studies emphasizing their use and review the most recent guidelines.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Cancer carries one of the heaviest burdens globally in terms of mortality. Lebanon is a middle-income Middle East country also plagued with cancer, as such a study and analysis of cancer trends and projections would serve a great benefit in the fight against the disease. Materials and Methods All data pertaining to cancers in Lebanon were extracted from the National Cancer Registry of Lebanon Web site. Data were analyzed to produce trends over the years of our study (2008-2015). Ten-year projections were further calculated for the top cancers by the primary site using logarithmic models. Results The top cancers in Lebanon are the breast, lung, colorectal, bladder, and prostate. The top cancers affecting females are the breast, lung, and colorectal. The top cancers affecting males are the prostate, lung, and bladder. Cancer cases are projected to increase in Lebanon over the next 10 years. Conclusion Lebanon had a steady incidence rate of cancer cases during the time of our study. A more complete understanding of cancer trends and their ultimate reduction will require further research into the origins of specific cancers and the means of prevention and control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is a major cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality among women in the the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Conflict and political instability in the region may affect medical research output, including that on breast cancer. This scoping review aims to systematically identify and map breast cancer publications across different stages of the cancer care pathway and across conflict-affected countries within the MENA region. The findings of this work will highlight the impact of conflict on cancer research that could be mitigated with the proper contextualised capacity strengthening intervention. METHODS We followed the PRISMA-Scr methodology. We searched for peer-reviewed publications on topics related to breast cancer in 11 databases: Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, PROQUEST, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, Arab World Searches Complete, Popline, Scopus and Google Scholar using both controlled vocabulary and keywords. Publication abstracts and full-text versions were screened for duplicates and included in our study based on pre-specified eligibility criteria: focused on breast cancer, related to the specific country of analysis and human or health system studies. We used a structured data extraction form to extract information related to the article, its methodology and the cancer care pathway being studied. RESULTS A total of 19,215 citations were retrieved from our search. After removing duplicates, a total of 8,622 articles remained. Title and abstract screening retained 1,613 articles. Publications with first author affiliations to Turkey were consistently the highest across all categories of the cancer care pathway. Trends show an increase in articles from Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine after 2015. Early exploratory and epidemiological studies represented the majority of breast cancer research, followed by policy and implementation research and lastly experimental research. Most research conducted followed an observational study design. Important gaps were identified in the research output related to advanced breast cancer and palliative care (Libya, Syria and Yemen), mental health (Libya), and knowledge and education of breast cancer (Libya and Syria). CONCLUSION This scoping review has identified key areas in breast cancer research that lack significant research activity in conflict MENA settings. These areas, including but are not limited to palliative care, mental health, and education, can be prioritised and developed through regional collaboration and contextualised capacity strengthening initiatives.

Abstract
Since the Syrian conflict started, Lebanon became a common destination receiving a huge number of Syrian refugees that are living in camps spread all over the country, with the largest concentration in the Bekaa Valley. Generous steps are being taken to increase the access to formal education, such as offering free public education and opening second shifts in the public schools in the afternoon. Yet barriers, such as child labor and health-related factors like the spreading of some communicable diseases, like Leishmania, are keeping children out of classroom. The present study was done with the aim of investigating the effect of leishmaniasis on the performance and the academic achievement of Syrian refugee children. The results showed varying degrees of knowledge and dealing with the case of leishmaniasis. The disease clearly had an effect on the students’ attendance in schools, and by proxy on their academic performance.

Abstract
Genetic polymorphisms in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene may alter the risk of breast cancer. This study aimed to investigate the association of MTHFR C677T and A1298C genetic polymorphisms with breast cancer risk in case-control studies which was followed by stratified analysis. In the case-control study, 300 subjects including 150 women with breast cancer and 150 healthy women were enrolled. After blood sample collection, the C677T and A1298C polymorphisms genotyping were done by the PCR-RFLP method. Our data revealed a significant association between MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms and breast cancer risk. But, as a preliminary study, stratified analysis revealed no significant association between C677T and A1298C polymorphisms and tumor size and also lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. According to the mentioned findings, the C677T and A1298C polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene could be molecular risk factors for breast cancer in our studied population. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are required to obtain a more accurate conclusion in stratified analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heparin and heparin-like molecules have shown some promise in the treatment of several cancers. These molecules have roles in angiogenesis, cell proliferation, immune system modulation, cell migration, and cellular invasion. The pathways and mechanisms used by these molecules to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells aid in understanding the utilization of these molecules in potential treatments. Our aim is to review the use of heparin and heparin-like molecules in cancer treatment, explore the results, and discuss their potential downfalls. METHODS Publications on heparin and heparin-like molecules and compounds were collected from the PubMed and EMBASE databases. Boolean operators and MeSH terms related to heparin, heparin-like molecules, and cancer were used to conduct this search. The articles were reviewed by the authors. RESULTS Several heparin mimetics are showing promise in cancer treatment. Various studies using mimetics alone or in combination with chemotherapy have been conducted and have yielded mixed results. They work on multiple target molecules, mostly receptors such as fibroblast growth factor and endothelial growth factor. The main types of cancers targeted by these drugs are multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and other solid tumors. CONCLUSION Although limited clinical evidence of efficacy and potential pitfalls are present, heparin and heparin-like molecules have shown potential in the management of cancer patients. Additional research is required to fully understand the biological mechanisms utilized by these molecules in cancer treatment.

Abstract
Background Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) are two common malignancies worldwide and in Lebanon. Analysis of their trends plays a crucial role to better understand their origins and risk factors. This study will probe incidences of both types of lymphomas from 2005 to 2016, aiming to compare between the two malignancies according to age and sex and plot projections until 2026. Methods HL and NHL cases from 2005 to 2016 were collected from the National Cancer Registry of Lebanon. Data was stratified according to age and sex. Age-specific and age-standardized incidence rates were analysed using joinpoint regression; 10-year projections were predicted based on logarithmic models. Results Between 2005 and 2016, NHL was significantly more common than HL. NHL was higher in both genders. HL showed a bimodal age distribution while NHL peaked in elderly patients. NHL incidence rates in males increased significantly from 2005 to 2014 while HL incidence rates showed an insignificant rise. Over the next 10 years, NHL and HL cases are expected to increase in Lebanon. Conclusion HL and NHL are on the rise in Lebanon. Extensive research into the main factors contributing to these lymphomas is crucial in the fight against them. More efforts must be done by the government and health organizations to better control the disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract. The median survival of the disease is around 6 months. In this study, we explore clinical trials related to non-resectable GBC, determine the shortcomings leading to the lack of development of new treatment, and shed light on possible areas of improvement. METHODS On April 20, 2019 the authors completed a search on ClinicalTrials.gov for all therapeutic and interventional clinical trials involving non-resectable GBC, without any limits on date or location. Trial characteristics such as duration, phase, sample size, and whether a publication was produced were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Sixty-two trials met our selection criteria. The average duration of trials was 5 years. Trials were conducted in 8 different countries: most of them in North America (USA and Canada). About 88% of trials were in early phases (I, I/II, and II) and 85% of trials were completed. Only 4 relevant publications were produced from all the trials in our study. Gemcitabine was the most common drug used. Use of gemcitabine alone or in combination with either capecitabine or cisplatin showed significant increase mean progression-free survival. CONCLUSION This study revealed a low number of trials, lack of geographic diversity, and scarcity of publications concerning non-resectable GBC. Adequate management of is of great importance to reach effective therapies for this disease.

Abstract
ObjectiveHealth communication is a novel field in the Arab world. This study aimed to describe and characterise health communication research activity in the region.Methods and analysisThe PubMed database was used to search for publications related to health communication from Arab states. Publications were classified according to country of origin, without limiting for date. Research activity and output were examined with respect to population and the gross domestic product (GDP) of each Arab state.ResultsA total of 66 contributions related to health communication came from the Arab countries, with the first paper published from Lebanon in 2004. Health communication-related publications constituted 0.03% of the total biomedical research contributions published by the Arab world since 2004 and 1% of the world’s health communication literature. Number of health communication contributions ranged between 0 and 12, with Lebanon producing the most output. Qatar ranked first with respect to contributions per population, whereas Lebanon ranked first with respect to contributions per GDP. Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen had nil health communication publications.ConclusionRecognising the barriers facing the health communication field and addressing them carefully are vital in the plan to better the Arab world’s output and contribution in the field.
