Abstract
With growing recognition of the pivotal role of gut microbiota in human health, probiotics have gained widespread attention for their potential to restore microbial homeostasis. However, a critical challenge persists: limited colonization efficiency among most probiotic strains compromises their therapeutic efficacy. This overview synthesizes ecological principles with cutting-edge microbiome research to elucidate the dynamic interplay between dietary components and probiotic colonization within the intestinal niche. This overview systematically analyzes: (1) stage-specific colonization mechanisms spanning microbial introduction, establishment, and proliferation; (2) nutrient-driven modulation of gut microbiota composition and function; and (3) the dual role of common dietary patterns as both facilitators and disruptors of probiotic persistence. Notably, this overview identifies key dietary strategies, including precision delivery of prebiotic fibers and polyphenol-microbiota crosstalk, that enhance niche adaptation through pH optimization, adhesion potentiation, and competitive exclusion of pathogens. Furthermore, this overview critically evaluates current limitations in probiotic research, particularly strain-specific variability and methodological constraints in simulating host-microbe-diet tripartite interactions. To bridge these gaps, this overview proposes an interdisciplinary framework integrating omics-driven strain selection, engineered delivery systems, and personalized nutrition models. Collectively, this work advances a mechanistic understanding of diet-microbiota interactions while providing actionable insights for developing targeted probiotic therapies and evidence-based dietary interventions to optimize gut ecosystem resilience.

Abstract
Lu'an Guapian (LAGP) is a renowned green tea, with its price significantly higher when picked before the Qingming Festival compared to after, posing risks of confusion and counterfeiting. This study proposed using an excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence method combined with chemometrics for rapid identification of tea picked before and after Qingming Festival. Firstly, the differences among the EEM fingerprints of different tea samples were analyzed using the alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm. To determine the differences between LAGP before and after Qingming Festival, the total contents of ten main components in tea were detected, and their effects on the EEM fluorescence fingerprint of tea were analyzed using correlation heatmaps. Finally, two chemometric algorithms, partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), were used to classify LAGP before and after Qingming Festival, achieving a classification accuracy of 100% for the training set, test set, and prediction set. To further explore the potential of this method, LAGP was further classified in detail according to four detailed picking periods, achieving an accuracy of over 83%. The same chemometric algorithm was used to classify the data based on the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, yielding results comparable to those of the EEM-based method, though slightly inferior. Variable importance projection (VIP) analysis shows that catechin analogs are the main contributors to the classification of LAGP. The results demonstrated the EEM method's significant potential in identifying the picking time of green tea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite antihypertensive treatment, some high-risk hypertensive patients still experience major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). Current risk stratification tools may underestimate the presence of metabolites in hypertension and thereby risk of MACEs. OBJECTIVES We aimed to explore the potential value of gut microbiota-derived metabolite phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln) in risk stratification of hypertension. METHODS We measured plasma PAGln levels using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in 1543 high-risk hypertensive patients, dividing them into a discovery cohort (n = 792) and a validation cohort (n = 751). After follow-up, the Kaplan-Meier curve and the Cox regression model were utilized to determine the correlation between PAGln and MACEs (death, non-fatal ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, non-fatal acute coronary syndrome and unplanned revascularization). We examined the predictive performance of PAGln in different subgroups and evaluated the incremental predictive value of PAGln as an addition to the ASCVD risk assessment model. RESULTS Among all high-risk hypertensive patients, 148 patients experienced MACEs after a mean follow-up of 3.02 years. In both cohorts, after adjusting other confounding risk factors, PAGln remained an independent risk factor the MACEs in hypertensive patients. Patients with plasma PAGln ≥ 1.047 μmol/L have a higher risk of MACEs. PAGln concentration provided incremental predictive value to the ASCVD risk model, with better performance in the discovery cohort. It was most effective in female, patients with a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 130 mmHg and taking angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). CONCLUSIONS PAGln was associated with an increased risk of MACEs in hypertension, especially in women or in subgroups with SBP ≥ 130 mmHg and taking ACEIs. PAGln should be considered as an independent predictor in risk stratification to improve prognosis.

Abstract
Tea drinks/beverage has a long history and milk is often added to enhance its taste and nutritional value, whereas the interaction between the tea bioactive compounds with proteins has not been systematically investigated. In this study, a milk-tea model was prepared by mixing green tea solution with milk and then heated at 100°C for 15 min. The milk tea was then measured using biochemical assay, antioxidant detection kit, microscopy as well as HPLC-QTOF-MS/MS after ultrafiltration. The study found that as the concentration of milk protein increased in the milk-tea system, the total phenol-protein binding rate raised from 19.63% to 51.08%, which led to a decrease in free polyphenol content. This decrease of polyphenol was also revealed in the antioxidant capacity, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging ability and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power, in a dose-dependent manner. Untargeted metabolomics results revealed that the majority of small-molecule compounds/polyphenols in tea, such as epigallocatechin gallate, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and Catechin 5,7,-di-O-gallate, bound to milk proteins and were removed by ultrafiltration after addition of milk and heat treatment. The SDS-PAGE and Native-PAGE results further indicated that small molecule compounds in tea formed covalent and non-covalent complexes by binding to milk proteins. All above results partially explained that milk proteins form conjugates with tea small-molecule compounds. Consistently, the particle size of the tea-milk system increased as the tea concentration increased, but the polymer dispersity index decreased, indicating a more uniform molecular weight distribution of the particles in the system. Addition of milk protein enhanced foam ability in the milk-tea system but reduced foam stability. In summary, our findings suggest that the proportion of milk added to tea infusion needs to be considered to maintain the quality of milk-tea from multiple perspectives, including stability, nutritional quality and antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Tea is a highly popular beverage, primarily due to its unique flavor and aroma as well as its perceived health benefits. The impact of tea on the gut microbiome could be an important means by which tea exerts its health benefits since the link between the gut microbiome and health is strong. This review provided a discussion of the bioactive compounds in tea and the human gut microbiome and how the gut microbiome interacts with tea polyphenols. Importantly, studies were compiled on the impact of differently processed tea, which contains different polyphenol profiles, on the gut microbiota from in vivo animal feeding trials, in vitro human fecal fermentation experiments, and in vivo human feeding trials from 2004-2024. The results were discussed in terms of different tea types and how their impacts are related to or different from each other in these three study groups.

Abstract
Phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln) is an amino acid derivate that comes from the amino acid phenylalanine. There are increasing studies showing that the level of PAGln is associated with the risk of different cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we discussed the metabolic pathway of PAGln production and the quantitative measurement methods of PAGln. We summarized the epidemiological evidence to show the role of PAGln in diagnostic and prognostic value in several cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, coronary heart disease/atherosclerosis, and cardiac arrhythmia. The underlying mechanism of PAGln is now considered to be related to the thrombotic potential of platelets via adrenergic receptors. Besides, other possible mechanisms such as inflammatory response and oxidative stress could also be induced by PAGln. Moreover, since PAGln is produced across different organs including the intestine, liver, and kidney, the cross-talk among multiple organs focused on the function of this uremic toxic metabolite. Finally, the prognostic value of PAGln compared to the classical biomarker was discussed and we also highlighted important gaps in knowledge and areas requiring future investigation of PAGln in cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as a highly effective therapy for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) and also a potential therapy for other diseases associated with dysbiotic gut microbiota. Monitoring metabolic changes in biofluids and excreta is a noninvasive approach to identify the biomarkers of microbial recolonization and to understand the metabolic influences of FMT on the host. In this study, the pre-FMT and post FMT urine samples from 11 rCDI patients were compared through metabolomic analyses for FMT-induced metabolic changes. The results showed that p-cresol sulfate in urine, a microbial metabolite of tyrosine, was rapidly elevated by FMT and much more responsive than other microbial metabolites of aromatic amino acids (AAAs). Because patients were treated with vancomycin prior to FMT, the influence of vancomycin on the microbial metabolism of AAAs was examined in a mouse feeding trial, in which the decreases in p-cresol sulfate, phenylacetylglycine, and indoxyl sulfate in urine were accompanied with significant increases in their AAA precursors in feces. The inhibitory effects of antibiotics and the recovering effects of FMT on the microbial metabolism of AAAs were further validated in a mouse model of FMT. Overall, urinary p-cresol sulfate may function as a sensitive and convenient therapeutic indicator on the effectiveness of antibiotics and FMT for the desired manipulation of gut microbiota in human patients.

Abstract
Catechins have proven to have several health benefits, yet a huge interindividual variability occurs. The metabolic potency of the colonic microbiota towards catechin is a key determinant of this variability. Microbiota from two donors - previously characterized as a fast and a slow converter- were incubated with (+)-catechin in vitro. The robustness of in vitro metabolic profiles was verified by well-fitted human trials. The colon region-dependent and donor-dependent patterns were reflected in both metabolic features and colonic microbiota composition. Upstream and downstream metabolites were mainly detected in the proximal and distal colons, respectively, and were considered important explanatory variables for microbiota clustering in the corresponding colon regions. Higher abundances of two catechin-metabolizing bacteria, Eggerthella and Flavonifractor were found in the distal colon compared to the proximal colon and in slow converter than fast converter. Additionally, these two bacteria were enriched in treatment samples compared to sham treatment samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal and small-cohort human studies have shown that tea consumption affects the gut microbiome, but evidence from large cohort studies is lacking. OBJECTIVES We examined associations between tea consumption and gut microbiome composition among older Chinese adults. METHODS The study included 1179 men and 1078 women from the Shanghai Men's and Women's Health Studies, who reported tea drinking status, type, amount, and duration at baseline and follow-up surveys (1996-2017) and were free of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes at stool collection (2015-2018). Fecal microbiome was profiled using 16S rRNA sequencing. Associations of tea variables with microbiome diversity and taxa abundance were evaluated using linear or negative binomial hurdle models after adjusting for sociodemographics, lifestyle, and hypertension status. RESULTS Mean age at stool collection was 67.2 ± 9.0 y in men and 69.6 ± 8.5 y in women. Tea drinking was not associated with microbiome ɑ-diversity in men or women; however, all tea variables were associated with β-diversity in men (P < 0.001). Significant associations with taxa abundance were also observed mostly in men. Current tea drinking, mainly green tea drinking, was associated with increase in orders Synergistales and RF39 in men (β = 0.30 to 0.42, all PFDR ≤ 0.10) but not in women (PInteraction-sex = 0.01). Also, increase in families Coriobacteriaceae, Odoribacteraceae, genera Collinsella, Odoribacter, and species Collinsella aerofaciens, Coprococcus catus, and Dorea formicigenerans were observed among men who drank >3.3 cups (781 mL)/d compared to that of nondrinkers (all PFDR <0.10). The increased Coprococcus catus related to tea drinking was more evident among men without hypertension and inversely associated with the prevalence of hypertension (OR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.84, 0.97; PFDR = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Tea consumption may affect gut microbiome β-diversity and abundance of some bacteria, which may contribute to reduced hypertension risk in Chinese men. Future studies should examine the sex-specific tea-gut microbiome associations and how certain bacteria may mediate the health benefits of tea.

Abstract
The bioavailability of catechin highly relies on gut microbiota which may determine its metabolic profile, resulting in different health outcomes. Here, we investigated in vitro (+)-catechin metabolism by human microbial communities. There were substantial interindividual differences in the metabolic profiles of (+)-catechin, with 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactone being the major contributor. Furthermore, the microbial metabolic rate of catechin enabled stratification of 12 participants (fast, medium, and slow converters), despite the interference from the strong intrinsic interindividual variability in fecal microbiota. Correlations were established between this stratified population and microbiota features, such as ecosystem diversity. Additionally, fast converters had significantly higher prevalences of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) with potential capacity of C-ring cleavage (ASV233_Eggerthella and ASV402_Eubacterium), B-ring dihydroxylation (ASV402_Eubacterium), and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing ASVs. In conclusion, metabolic-capability-based stratification allows us to uncover differences in microbial composition between fast and slow converters, which could help to elucidate interindividual variabilities in the health benefits of catechins.

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a disease marked by oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and the presence of autoantibodies. The gut microbiota has been shown to be involved in the alleviation of oxidative stress and inflammation as well as strengthening immunity, thus its' possible involvement in the pathogenesis of T1DM has been highlighted. The goal of the present study is to analyze information on the relationship between the structure of the intestinal microbiome and the occurrence of T1DM. The modification of the intestinal microbiota can increase the proportion of SCFA-producing bacteria, which could in turn be effective in the prevention and/or treatment of T1DM. The increased daily intake of soluble and non-soluble fibers, as well as the inclusion of pro-biotics, prebiotics, herbs, spices, and teas that are sources of phytobiotics, in the diet, could be important in improving the composition and activity of the microbiota and thus in the prevention of metabolic disorders. Understanding how the microbiota interacts with immune cells to create immune tolerance could enable the development of new therapeutic strategies for T1DM and improve the quality of life of people with T1DM.

Abstract
As important biomolecules in Camellia sinensis L., amino acids (AAs) are considered to contribute to the overall green tea sensory quality and undergo dynamic changes during growth. However, limited by analytical capacity, detailed AAs composition in different growth stages remains unclear. To address this question, we analyzed the dynamic changes of 23 AAs during leaf growth in Xinyang Mao Jian (XYMJ) green tea. Using amino acid analyzer, we demonstrated that most AAs are abundant on Pure Brightness Day and Grain Rain Day. After Grain Rain, 23 AAs decreased significantly. Further analysis shows that theanine has a high level on the day before Spring Equinox and Grain Rain, accounting for 44–61% of the total free AAs content in tea leaves. Glu, Pro, and Asp are the second most abundant AAs. Additionally, spinasterol and 22,23-dihydrospinasterol are first purified and identified in ethanol extract of XYMJ by silica gel column chromatography method. This study reveals the relationship between plucking days and the dynamic changes of AAs during the growth stage and proves the rationality of the traditional plucking days of XYMJ green tea.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols (GTP) have similar activities as prebiotics, which effectively regulate the structure of intestinal flora and affect their metabolic pathways. The intestinal flora is closely related to the host's circadian rhythm, and the supplementation with GTP may be an effective way to improve circadian rhythm disorders. In this study, we established a mouse model of circadian rhythm disturbance of anthropogenic flora to investigate the regulation mechanism of GTP on the host circadian rhythms. After 4 weeks of GTP administration, the results showed that GTP significantly alleviated the structural disorder of intestinal microbiota, thus effectively regulating related metabolites associated with brain nerves and circadian rhythms. Moreover, single-cell transcription of the mouse hypothalamus suggested that GTP up-regulated the number of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes and adjusted the expression of core clock genes Csnk1d, Clock, Per3, Cry2, and BhIhe41 caused by circadian disruption. Therefore, this study provided evidence that GTP can improve the physiological health of hosts with the circadian disorder by positively affecting intestinal flora and related metabolites and regulating circadian gene expression.

Abstract
Rutin, a natural flavonol glycoside, elicits its diverse health-promoting effects from the bioactivities of quercetin, its aglycone. While widely distributed in the vegetables and fruits of human diet, rutin is either absent or inadequate in common animal feed ingredients. Rutin has been supplemented to dairy cows for performance enhancement, but its metabolic fate in vivo has not been determined. In this study, plasma, urine, and rumen fluid samples were collected before and after the intraruminal dosing of 100 mg/kg rutin to 4 Holsteins, and then characterized by both targeted and untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomic analysis. In plasma and urine, 4-methylcatechol sulfate was identified as the most abundant metabolite of rutin, instead of quercetin and its flavonol metabolites, and its concentration was inversely correlated with the concentration of p-cresol sulfate. In rumen fluid, the formation of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DHPAA) and 4-methylcatechol after rapid degradation of rutin and quercetin concurred with the decrease of p-cresol and the increase of its precursor, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Overall, the formation of 4-methylcatechol, a bioactive microbial metabolite, as the dominant bioavailable metabolite of rutin and quercetin, could contribute to their beneficial bioactivities in dairy cows, while the decrease of p-cresol, a microbial metabolite with negative biological and sensory properties, from the competitive inhibition between microbial metabolism of rutin and tyrosine, has the potential to reduce environmental impact of dairy operations and improve the health of dairy cattle.

Abstract
The intestinal absorption of dietary catechins is quite low, resulting in most of them being metabolized by gut microbiota in the colon. It has been hypothesized that microbiota-derived metabolites may be partly responsible for the association between catechin consumption and beneficial cardiometabolic effects. Given the profound differences in gut microbiota composition and microbial load between individuals and across different colon regions, this study examined how microbial (+)-catechin metabolite profiles differ between colon regions and individuals. Batch exploration of the interindividual variability in (+)-catechin microbial metabolism resulted in a stratification based on metabolic efficiency: from the 12 tested donor microbiota, we identified a fast- and a slow-converting microbiota that was subsequently inoculated to SHIME, a dynamic model of the human gut. Monitoring of microbial (+)-catechin metabolites from proximal and distal colon compartments with UHPLC-MS and UPLC-IMS-Q-TOF-MS revealed profound donor-dependent and colon-region-dependent metabolite profiles with 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactone being the largest contributor to differences between the fast- and slow-converting microbiota and the distal colon being a more important region for (+)-catechin metabolism than the proximal colon. Our findings may contribute to further understanding the role of the gut microbiota as a determinant of interindividual variation in pharmacokinetics upon (+)-catechin ingestion.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols have been extensively studied for their preventive properties against cardiometabolic diseases. Nevertheless, the evidence of these effects from human intervention studies is not always consistent, mainly because of a large interindividual variability. The bioavailability of tea polyphenols is low, and metabolism of tea polyphenols highly depends on individual gut microbiota. The accompanying reciprocal relationship between tea polyphenols and gut microbiota may result in alterations in the cardiometabolic effects, however, the underlying mechanism of which is little explored. This review summarizes tea polyphenols-microbiota interaction and its contribution to interindividual variability in cardiometabolic effects. Currently, only a few bacteria that can biodegrade tea polyphenols have been identified and generated metabolites and their bioactivities in metabolic pathways are not fully elucidated. A deeper understanding of the role of complex interaction necessitates fully individualized data, the ntegration of multiple-omics platforms and development of polyphenol-centered databases. Knowledge of this microbial contribution will enable the functional stratification of individuals in the gut microbiota profile (metabotypes) to clarify interindividual variability in the health effects of tea polyphenols. This could be used to predict individual responses to tea polyphenols consumption, hence bringing us closer to personalized nutrition with optimal dose and additional supplementation of specific microorganisms.

Abstract
Health-promoting activities of wheat bran are limited by the high-degree crosslinking of its dietary fiber and the low bioavailability of its phenolics. In this study, functionalized wheat bran (FWB) was prepared through a combination of milling, alkaline hydrolysis, high-shear mixing, and high-pressure homogenization treatments. Feasibility and metabolic effects of feeding FWB were investigated by a short-term mouse feeding trial and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analysis. The combinatorial processing dramatically enhanced the function-associated physicochemical properties of wheat bran, including viscosity, fiber compositions, free ferulic acid, and antioxidant capacity. FWB feeding led to diverse positive metabolic effects, including fecal sequestration of bile acids and cholesterol, reduced serum triacylglycerols and cholesterol, elevated fermentation for short-chain fatty acids, increased bioavailability of ferulic acid and its microbial metabolites, and improved redox balance. However, FWB feeding also negatively affected the nutritional status by decreasing the bioavailability of essential amino acids through the excessive loss of amino acids in feces and disrupting lipid homeostasis by reducing choline supply in the liver. These double-edged metabolic effects warrant further investigations on how to achieve the balance between the functionalization of wheat bran bioactives and the disruption of nutrient bioavailability.

Abstract
A diet high in polyphenols is associated with a diversified gut microbiome. Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water. The health benefits of tea might be attributed to the presence of polyphenol compounds such as flavonoids (e.g., catechins and epicatechins), theaflavins, and tannins. Although many studies have been conducted on tea, little is known of its effects on the trillions of gut microbiota. Hence, this review aimed to systematically study the effect of tea polyphenols on the stimulation or suppression of gut microbiota in humans and animals. It was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Articles were retrieved from PubMed and Scopus databases, and data were extracted from 6 human trials and 15 animal studies. Overall, large variations were observed in terms of microbiota composition between humans and animals. A more consistent pattern of diversified microbiota was observed in animal studies. Tea alleviated the gut microbiota imbalance caused by high-fat diet-induced obesity, diabetes, and ultraviolet-induced damage. The overall changes in microbiota composition measured by beta diversity analysis showed that tea had shifted the microbiota from the pattern seen in animals that received tea-free intervention. In humans, a prebiotic-like effect was observed toward the gut microbiota, but these results appeared in lower-quality studies. The beta diversity in human microbiota remains intact despite tea intervention; supplementation with different teas affects different types of bacterial taxa in the gut. These studies suggest that tea polyphenols may have a prebiotic effect in disease-induced animals and in a limited number of human interventions. Further intervention is needed to identify the mechanisms of action underlying the effects of tea on gut microbiota.

Abstract
Polyphenols (PPs) are the naturally occurring bioactive components in fruits and vegetables, and they are the most abundant antioxidant in the human diet. Studies are suggesting that ingestion of PPs might be helpful to ameliorate metabolic syndromes that may contribute in the prevention of several chronic disorders like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and colon cancer. PPs have structural diversity which impacts their bioavailability as they accumulate in the large intestine and are extensively metabolized through gut microbiota (GM). Intestinal microbiota transforms PPs into their metabolites to make them bioactive. Interestingly, not only GM act on PPs to metabolize them but PPs also modulate the composition of GM. Thus, change in GM from pathogenic to beneficial ones may be helpful to ameliorate gut health and associated diseases. However, to overcome the low bioavailability of PPs, various approaches have been developed to improve their solubility and transportation through the gut. In this review, we present evidence supporting the structural changes that occur after metabolic reactions in PPs (curcumin, quercetin, and catechins) and their effect on GM composition that leads to improving overall gut health and helping to ameliorate metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Polyphenols are a class of non-essential phytonutrients, which are abundant in fruits and vegetables. Dietary polyphenols or foods rich in polyphenols are widely recommended for metabolic health. Indeed, polyphenols (i.e., catechins, resveratrol, and curcumin) are increasingly recognized as a regulator of lipid metabolism in host. The mechanisms, at least in part, may be highly associated with gut microbiome. This review mainly discussed the beneficial effects of dietary polyphenols on lipid metabolism. The potential mechanisms of gut microbiome are focused on the effect of dietary polyphenols on gut microbiota compositions and how gut microbiota affect polyphenol metabolism. Together, dietary polyphenols may be a useful nutritional strategy for manipulation of lipid metabolism or obesity care.

Abstract
The gut microbiome converts dietary compounds that are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and further metabolized by the human host. Sulfated metabolites are a major compound class derived from this co-metabolism and have been linked to disease development. In the present multidisciplinary study, we have investigated human urine samples from a dietary intervention study with 22 individuals collected before and after consumption of a polyphenol rich breakfast. These samples were analyzed utilizing our method combining enzymatic metabolite hydrolysis using an arylsulfatase and mass spectrometric metabolomics. Key to this study is the validation of 235 structurally diverse sulfated metabolites. We have identified 48 significantly upregulated metabolites upon dietary intervention including 11 previously unknown sulfated metabolites for this diet. We observed a large variation in subjects based on their potential to sulfate metabolites, which may be the foundation for classification of subjects as high and low sulfate metabolizers in future large cohort studies. The reported sulfatase-based method is a robust tool for the discovery of unknown microbiota-derived metabolites in human samples.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the effect of treatment with isoxanthohumol (IX) on the metabolomics profile of mouse feces to explore the host-intestinal bacterial interactions at the molecular level. The fecal contents of several amino acids in the high-fat diet (HFD) + 0.1% IX group (treated with IX mixed in diets for 12 weeks) were significantly lower than in the HFD group. The fecal contents of the secondary bile acid deoxycholic acid (DCA) in the HFD + 180 mg/kg IX group (orally treated with IX for 8 weeks) were significantly lower than in the HFD group; the values in the HFD group were higher than those in the normal diet (ND) group. Administration of IX changed the fecal metabolomics profile. For some metabolites, IX normalized HFD-induced fluctuations.

Abstract
In recent years, the gut microbiome has become a focal point of interest with growing recognition that a well-balanced gut microbiota composition is highly relevant to an individual’s health status and well-being. Its profile can be modulated by a number of dietary factors, although few publications have focused on the effects of what we drink. The present review performed a systematic review of trials and mechanistic studies examining the effects of tea consumption, its associated compounds and their effects on the gut microbiome. Registered articles were searched up to 10th September 2019, in the PubMed and Cochrane library databases along with references of original articles. Human trials were graded using the Jadad scale to assess quality. Altogether 24 publications were included in the main review—six were human trials and 18 mechanistic studies. Of these, the largest body of evidence related to green tea with up to 1000 mL daily (4–5 cups) reported to increase proportions of Bifidobacterium. Mechanistic studies also show promise suggesting that black, oolong, Pu-erh and Fuzhuan teas (microbially fermented ‘dark tea’) can modulate microbial diversity and the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes. These findings appear to support the hypothesis that tea ingestion could favourably regulate the profile of the gut microbiome and help to offset dysbiosis triggered by obesity or high-fat diets. Further well-designed human trials are now required to build on provisional findings.
