Unsymmetrical Diboron Reagents: Application in Borylation Reactions of Unsaturated Bonds

Cu(II)-Catalyzed Hydroboration Reactions of 1,1-Disubstituted α,β-Unsaturated Ketones, Esters, and Amides in Pure Water

Here, a Cu2(OH)2CO3-catalyzed hydroboration reaction of 1,1-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated compounds has been developed. The reaction was carried out using water as a solvent at room temperature except for N-monosubstituted α,β-unsaturated amides. This method is applicable to diverse 1,1-disubstituted α,β-unsaturated ketones, esters, and amides, showing excellent reactivity (up to 98% yield). Gram-scale experiments and functional group transformations further demonstrated the practicality of this method.

NHC-Stabilized Dialanes(4) of Al2 Mes4

The synthesis and characterization of novel N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) stabilized dialanes Al2 Mes4 as well as first investigations concerning the reactivity of these compounds are reported. The synthesis of these compounds proceeds via the mesityl-substituted alanes (NHC)⋅AlHMes2 (NHC=IMeMe {=1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}, IiPrMe {=1,3-di-iso-propyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene}) and iodo-alanes (NHC)⋅AlIMes2 (NHC=IMeMe , IiPrMe ). Metallic reduction of (NHC)⋅AlIMes2 afforded the new NHC-stabilized dialanes (NHC)2 ⋅Al2 Mes4 (NHC=IMeMe , IiPrMe ). The NHC-ligated dialanes are thermally robust and storable synthons for the dialane Al2 Mes4 . First reactivity studies on (IMeMe )2 ⋅Al2 Mes4 towards small molecules confirm this, as this compound shows controlled and selective reactions with several substrates. Reaction with CuCl leads to oxidation of the dialane and formation of (IMeMe )⋅AlClMes2 , reactions with pyridine N-oxide and t Bu-N=C=S, respectively, gave the chalcogenide-bridged dimers {(IMeMe )⋅AlMes2 }2 -μ-E (E=O, S), and reaction with acetylene afforded the dimetallaacetylide {(IMeMe )⋅AlMes2 }2 -μ-(C≡C).

Stereoselective Unsymmetrical 1,1-Diborylation of Alkynes with a Neutral sp2 -sp3 Diboron Reagent

The incorporation of two distinct boryl groups at the same carbon center in organic molecules has attracted growing research interest due to its potential for facilitating controlled, precise synthesis through stepwise dual carbon-boron bond transformations. Here we report a method to access unsymmetrical 1,1-diborylalkene (UDBA) stereoselectively via the reaction of readily available alkynes with a neutral sp2 -sp3 diboron reagent (NHC)BH2 -Bpin (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene). Attributing to the chemically easily distinguishable nature of the sp2 and sp3 boryl moieties, controllable stepwise derivatization of the resultant UDBAs is realized. This process leads to various multifunctionalized olefins and organoborons, such as acylboranes, which are difficult to prepare by other methods.

Stereodefined polymetalloid alkenes synthesis via stereoselective boron-masking of polyborylated alkenes

Polyborylated-alkenes are valuable polymetalloid reagents in modern organic synthesis, providing access to a wide array of transformations, including the construction of multiple C-C and C-heteroatom bonds. However, because they contain similar boryl groups, many times their transformation faces the main challenge in controlling the chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. One way to overcome these limitations is by installing different boron groups that can provide an opportunity to tune their reactivity toward better chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. Yet, the preparation of polyborylated-alkenes containing different boryl groups has been rare. Herein we report concise, highly site-selective, and stereoselective boron-masking strategies of polyborylated alkenes. This is achieved by designed stereoselective trifluorination and MIDA-ation reactions of readily available starting polyborylated alkenes. Additionally, the trifluoroborylated-alkenes undergo a stereospecific interconversion to Bdan-alkenes. These transition-metal free reactions provide a general and efficient method for the conversion of polyborylated alkenes to access 1,1-di-, 1,2-di-, 1,1,2-tris-(borylated) alkenes containing BF3M, Bdan, and BMIDA, a family of compounds that currently lack efficient synthetic access. Moreover, tetraborylethene undergoes the metal-free MIDA-ation reaction to provide the mono BMIDA tetraboryl alkene selectively. The mixed polyborylalkenes are then demonstrated to be useful in selective C-C and C-heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Given its simplicity and versatility, these stereoselective boron-masking approaches hold great promise for organoboron synthesis and will result in more transformations.

1,2-Dialkynyldiboranes(4): B-B versus CC bond reactivity

The reactivity of three 1,2-dialkynyl-1,2-diaminodiborane(4) derivatives, B₂(NMe₂)₂(CCR)₂ (R = H, Me, SiMe₃), towards small molecules known to react with both B-B and CC bonds was studied. With arylazides nitrene insertion into the B-B bond with concomitant loss of N₂ was kinetically favoured in all cases. While reactions with sterically unhindered hydroboranes proceeded unselectively, sterically encumbered dimesitylborane cleanly added to both alkynyl moieties, resulting in the first examples of 1,2-divinyldiboranes(4). In the presence of catalytic amounts of Pd/C room-temperature hydrogenation at 1 bar led to oxidative B-B bond cleavage and yielded the fully hydrogenated alkyl(amino)hydroborane products. These could be prevented from dimerising and isolated by complexation with an NHC ligand. Finally, stepwise halogenation of the B-B bond and the alkynyl groups afforded first the corresponding alkynyl(amino)haloboranes and then the amino(halo)(1,2-dihalovinyl)boranes.

Probing the Boundaries between Lewis-Basic and Redox Behavior of a Parent Borylene

The parent borylene (CAAC)(Me3 P)BH, 1 (CAAC=cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene), acts both as a Lewis base and one-electron reducing agent towards group 13 trichlorides (ECl3 , E=B, Al, Ga, In), yielding the adducts 1-ECl3 and increasing proportions of the radical cation [1]•+ for the heavier group 13 analogues. With boron trihalides (BX3 , X=F, Cl, Br, I) 1 undergoes sequential adduct formation and halide abstraction reactions to yield borylboronium cations and shows an increasing tendency towards redox processes for the heavier halides. Calculations confirm that 1 acts as a strong Lewis base towards EX3 and show a marked increase in the B-E bond dissociation energies down both group 13 and the halide group.

First-Row d-Block Element-Catalyzed Carbon-Boron Bond Formation and Related Processes

Organoboron reagents represent a unique class of compounds because of their utility in modern synthetic organic chemistry, often affording unprecedented reactivity. The transformation of the carbon-boron bond into a carbon-X (X = C, N, and O) bond in a stereocontrolled fashion has become invaluable in medicinal chemistry, agrochemistry, and natural products chemistry as well as materials science. Over the past decade, first-row d-block transition metals have become increasingly widely used as catalysts for the formation of a carbon-boron bond, a transformation traditionally catalyzed by expensive precious metals. This recent focus on alternative transition metals has enabled growth in fundamental methods in organoboron chemistry. This review surveys the current state-of-the-art in the use of first-row d-block element-based catalysts for the formation of carbon-boron bonds.

Photoinduced Borylation for the Synthesis of Organoboron Compounds

Organoboron compounds have important synthetic value and can be applied in numerous transformations. The development of practical and convenient ways to synthesize boronate esters has thus attracted significant interest. Photoinduced borylations originated from stoichiometric reactions of alkanes and arenes with well-defined metal-boryl complexes. Now, photoredox-initiated borylations, catalyzed by either transition metal or organic photocatalysts, and photochemical borylations with high efficiency have become a burgeoning area of research. In this Focus Review, we summarize research on photoinduced borylations, especially emphasizing recent developments and trends. This includes the photoinduced borylation of arenes, alkanes, aryl/alkyl halides, activated carboxylic acids, amines, alcohols, and so on based on transition metal catalysis, metal-free organocatalysis, and direct photochemical activation. We focus on reaction mechanisms involving single-electron transfer, triplet-energy transfer, and other radical processes.

Diboration of 3-substituted propargylic alcohols using a bimetallic catalyst system: access to (Z)-allyl, vinyldiboronates

The diboration of substituted propargylic alcohols has been achieved using a bimetallic Pd/Cu catalyst system. The in situ formation of a pentrafluoroboronic acid intermediate sufficiently activates the C-O bond towards dual catalysis affording (Z)-allyl, vinyldiboronates stereoselectively.

Neutral cyclic sp2-sp3 and sp3-sp3 diboranes from N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide insertion into 1,2-dichlorodiboranes(4)

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of new neutral cyclic sp2-sp3 and sp3-sp3 diboranes from the reaction of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with 1,2-dichlorodiboranes(4) at room temperature. The present study is the first example of an insertion reaction of carbodiimide into diborane(4).

Regio- and Stereoselective Synthesis of 1,1-Diborylalkenes via Brønsted Base-Catalyzed Mixed Diboration of Alkynyl Esters and Amides with BpinBdan

The NaOtBu-catalyzed mixed 1,1-diboration of terminal alkynes using the unsymmetrical diboron reagent BpinBdan (pin = pinacolato; dan = 1,8-diaminonaphthalene) proceeds in a regio- and stereoselective fashion affording moderate to high yields of 1,1-diborylalkenes bearing orthogonal boron protecting groups. It is applicable to gram-scale synthesis without loss of yield or selectivity. The mixed 1,1-diborylalkene products can be utilized in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions which take place selectivly at the C-B site. DFT calculations suggest the NaOtBu-catalyzed mixed 1,1-diboration of alkynes occurs through deprotonation of the terminal alkyne, stepwise addition of BpinBdan to the terminal carbon followed by protonation with tBuOH. Experimentally observed selective formation of (Z)-diborylalkenes is supported by our theoretical studies.

This investigation examines the reactivity of phosphinoboronate esters Ph₂PBpin (pin = 1,2-O₂C₂Me₄) and Ph₂PBcat (cat = 1,2-O₂C₆H₄), as well as other phosphinoboron species, with various aryl and aliphatic acyl chlorides.
