Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was blended with high amylose starch (HAS) at a ratio of 3:1, and reinforced with montmorillonite (MMT K10) at different concentrations (1, 2, 5, and 7 % w/w of polymers) and anthocyanins (ANT) to develop an active and smart packaging film. MMT addition enhanced the film's mechanical, barrier, thermal, and water resistance properties. Incorporating ANT extracted from roselle calyx into the optimal nanocomposite film (MMT/PVA-HAS II) increased the films' antioxidant, pH-response, and antibacterial properties. FTIR, XRD, and SEM confirmed the intermolecular interactions and even distribution of ANT and MMT in the film matrix. Release rate of ANT was dependent on type of simulant, with higher rate in aqueous solutions compared to alcoholic/fatty food simulants, and cytotoxicity evaluation proved safety of films for food packaging applications. Storage experiments confirmed the potential applicability of the novel halochromic smart film as a promising candidate for monitoring chicken spoilage under abusive storage conditions.

Abstract
Paper coated with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based films incorporating varying amounts of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and/or beeswax (BW) were developed. The applied PVA/HNTs nanocomposite films, PVA/BW emulsified films, and PVA/HNTs/BW emulsified nanocomposite films were characterized in terms of FTIR, TGA, DSC, and XRD analyses. The effects of HNTs and/or BW at different loadings on the functional properties of coated paper were investigated. HNTs and BW co-incorporation significantly improved the water vapor permeability of the resulting PVA/HNTs/BW coated paper samples, and reduced their Cobb60 values, respectively, by more than 50, 24, and 18% as compared to the uncoated paper, paper coated with pristine PVA and paper coated with PVA/HNTs nanocomposite-based coatings. While increasing their contact angle values in the range of 10-20%. Likewise, HNTs and BW co-incorporation increased the mechanical strength of PVA/HNTs/BW coated paper in the range of 20.54-29.80% as compared to the uncoated paper, while increasing their flexibility up to 32.50%. Such enhancement in the functional properties of PVA/HNTs/BW coated paper is most likely due to the establishment of interactions between PVA, BW, and HNTs. Our results demonstrate the ability of PVA/HNTs/BW emulsified nanocomposite coatings to improve paper barrier and mechanical properties owing to the prominent reinforcement effects of HNTs and the good moisture-barrier properties of BW.

Abstract
Thermoplastic biofilms were developed from achira starch, chitosan and nanoclays using the solvent-casting method. To obtain the filmogenic solutions, different sonication times (0, 10, 20 and 30 min) were considered in order to evaluate the incidence of this parameter on the chemical and physico-mechanical properties of the bionanocomposite films. The chemical analysis using FTIR spectroscopy showed strong intermolecular interactions between the components with increasing sonication times. The results for tensile strength and elongation were satisfactory for films with 20 min of sonication with increases of 154% and 161%, respectively. Morphological analysis showed greater homogeneity, while thermal analysis showed that sonication favoured the plasticization process and thus, the production of homogeneous materials. The water absorption and wettability tests showed less hydrophilic materials allowing these new materials to be considered for use as coatings or packaging for the food sector.

Abstract
Food packaging is an important concept for consumer satisfaction and the increased shelf life of food products. The introduction of novel food packaging materials has become an emerging trend in recent years, which could be mainly due to environmental pollution caused by plastic packaging and to reduce food waste. Recently, numerous studies have been carried out on nanoclays or nanolayered silicate to be used in packaging material development as reinforcing filler composites. Different types of nanoclays have been used as food packaging materials, while montmorillonite (MMT), halloysite, bentonite (BT), Cloisite, and organically modified nanoclays have become of great interest. The incorporation of nanoclays into the packaging matrix improves the mechanical and barrier properties and at the same time prolongs the biodegradation of the packaging material. The purpose of this article is to examine the development of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. The review article highlights the current state of research on bio-based polymers with nanoclay for food packaging. In addition, the report analyses the mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial characteristics of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. Finally, it discusses the migration of nanoclays, toxicity levels, and the legislation associated with the application of nanoclays. Graphical abstract

Abstract
Linseed oil-based composite films were prepared with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) using a modified clay (organoclay) through in situ polymerization, which is the result of the interaction between Cin and organoclay. The incorporation of organoclay reduces the polymer chain's mobility and, therefore, increases the thermal stability of the composite films. In some experimental conditions, the clay is located both inside and on the surface of the film, thus, affecting the mechanical and thermal properties as well as the surface properties of the composite films. The incorporation of organoclay decreases the water contact angle of the composite film by more than 15%, whatever the amount of cinnamaldehyde. However, the incorporation of cinnamaldehyde has the opposite effect on film surface properties. Indeed, for the water vapor permeability (WVP), the effect of cinnamaldehyde on the film barrier properties is much higher in the presence of organoclay. The incorporation of hydrophobic compounds into the polymer films reduces the water content, which acts as a plasticizer and, therefore, decreases the WVP by more than 17%. Linseed oil has a natural antioxidant activity (~97%) due to the higher content of unsaturated fatty acids, and this activity increased with the amount of organoclay and cinnamaldehyde.

Abstract
Polymer materials with excellent physicochemical and electrical properties are desirable for energy storage applications in advanced electronics and power systems. Here, Al2O3@ZrO2 nanoparticles (A@Z) with a core-shell structure are synthesized and introduced to a P(VDF-HFP) matrix to fabricate P(VDF-HFP)/A@Z nanocomposite films. Experimental and simulation results confirm that A@Z nanoparticles increase the crystallinity and crystallization temperature owing to the effect of the refined crystal size. The incorporation of A@Z nanoparticles leads to conformational changes of molecular chains of P(VDF-HFP), which influences the dielectric relaxation and trap parameters of the nanocomposites. The calculated total trapped charges increase from 13.63 μC of the neat P(VDF-HFP) to 47.55 μC of P(VDF-HFP)/5 vol%-A@Z nanocomposite, indicating a substantial improvement in trap density. The modulated crystalline characteristic and interfaces between nanoparticles and polymer matrix are effective in inhibiting charge motion and impeding the electric conduction channels, which contributes to an improved electrical property and energy density of the nanocomposites. Specifically, a ~200% and ~31% enhancement in discharged energy density and breakdown strength are achieved in the P(VDF-HFP)/5 vol%-A@Z nanocomposite.

Abstract
Packaging materials play an essential role in the preservation and marketing of food and other products. To improve their conservation capacity, antimicrobial agents that inhibit bacterial growth are used. Biopolymers such as starch and chitosan are a sustainable alternative for the generation of films for packaging that can also serve as a support for preservatives and antimicrobial agents. These substances can replace packaging of synthetic origin and maintain good functional properties to ensure the quality of food products. Films based on a mixture of corn starch and chitosan were developed by the casting method and the effect of incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) at different concentrations (0 to 10% w/w) was studied. The effect of the incorporation of CNC on the rheological, mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, as well as the antimicrobial activity of nanocomposite films, was evaluated. A significant modification of the functional and antimicrobial properties of the starch–chitosan films was observed with an increase in the concentration of nanomaterials. The films with CNC in a range of 0.5 to 5% presented the best performance. In line with the physicochemical characteristics which are desired in antimicrobial materials, this study can serve as a guide for the development this type of packaging for food use.

Abstract
Packaging materials based on biodegradable polymers are a viable alternative to replace conventional plastic packaging from fossil origin. The type of plasticizer used in these materials affects their functionality and performance. The effect of different plasticizers such as glycerol (GLY), sorbitol (SOR), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% (w/w) on the structural features and functional properties of starch/PVOH/chitosan films was evaluated. The incorporation of a plasticizer increased the thickness of the biodegradable composite films. Furthermore, the material plasticized with 30% (w/w) sorbitol had the highest elongation at break, lowest water vapor permeability, and better thermal resistance. The results obtained in this study suggest that maize starch/PVOH/chitosan biodegradable composite films are a promising packaging material, and that sorbitol is the most suitable plasticizer for this formulation.

Abstract
Starch is a biopolymer with enormous potential for generating new biodegradable packages due to its easy availability and low cost. However, due to its weak functional properties, limitation of its interaction with some hydroxyl groups and evaluation of blends with other polymers are necessary in order to improve its performance. Glycerol-plasticized acetylated corn starch films were developed using the casting method, and the impact of incorporating chitosan (TPS:CH) in various proportions (75:25, 50:50, and 25:75 v/v) was studied in the present research. The effect of chitosan ratios on the physical, mechanical, water-vapor barrier, and thermal properties of the film was studied. Chitosan-protonated amino groups promoted the formation of intermolecular bonds, improving tensile strength, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, water adsorption capacity, and the gas barrier of starch films. The results show that the film composed of TPS25-CH75 proved to be the best barrier to water vapor; thus, these composite films are excellent choices for developing biodegradable packaging for the food industry.
