Exploring the Structural and Electronic Properties of Niobium Carbide Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Study

This paper systematically investigates the structure, stability, and electronic properties of niobium carbide clusters, NbmCn (m = 5, 6; n = 1-7), using density functional theory. Nb5C2 and Nb5C6 possess higher dissociation energies and second-order difference energies, indicating that they have higher thermodynamic stability. Moreover, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations are used to demonstrate the thermal stability of these structures. The analysis of the density of states indicates that the molecular orbitals of NbmCn (m = 5, 6; n = 1-7) are primarily contributed by niobium atoms, with carbon atoms having a smaller contribution. The composition of the frontier molecular orbitals reveals that niobium atoms contribute approximately 73.1% to 99.8% to NbmCn clusters, while carbon atoms contribute about 0.2% to 26.9%.

Development of an Alternative Manufacturing Technology for Niobium Components

Due to their physical and mechanical properties, niobium products are used in the nuclear power industry, chemical industry, electronics, medicine and in the defence industry. Traditional manufacturing technology for these products is characterized by long production cycles and significant material losses during their surface machining. This paper presents the results of a study on the fabrication of niobium products by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Structural and mechanical tests were conducted on the products obtained, as well as a comparative analysis with the properties of products obtained using traditional technology. Based on the analysis of the test results obtained, recommendations were made for the sintering of Nb powders. It was found that the optimum temperature for sintering the powder is 2000 °C as the density of the material obtained is close to the theoretical density. The microstructure obtained is comparable to samples obtained by the traditional method after recrystallization annealing. Samples obtained according to the new technology are characterized by higher mechanical properties Rp0.2 and Rm and the highest hardness.

Extraction and characterisation of kudzu root residue lignin based on deep eutectic solvents

INTRODUCTION

Lignin has great potential as the most abundant renewable phenolic polymer. Studies have shown that lignin structure varies depending on different sources and different extraction methods. However, there are few studies on lignin in kudzu root residue.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to explore optimal extraction conditions of Pueraria lobata residue lignin (PLL) with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and characterise the structure and morphology of PLL.

METHODS

Firstly, the chemical composition of kudzu root residue was determined by the Van-soest method. Then, betaine was used as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), nine kinds of common acids and alcohol were selected as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) to synthesise a DES to extract lignin from kudzu root residue. The influence of conditions on the extraction of PLL was explored by a betaine-based DES according to a single-factor experiment, and then the best process of PLL extraction was determined by an orthogonal experiment. Finally, the morphology and structure of PLL were analysed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and NMR.

RESULTS

Cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and ash content in kudzu root residue were 41.13%, 16.39%, 25.03%, and 0.41%, respectively. When the DES consisted of betaine and formic acid, the solid-liquid ratio was 1:45, the extraction time was 5.5 h at 160°C, the extraction yield of lignin was 89.29%, and the purity was 83.01%. PLL was composed of interconnected spherical particles with good thermal stability and narrow polydispersity index (PDI) distribution. FTIR and 2D-heteronuclear singular quantum correlation (HSQC) NMR illustrated that PLL was a typical G-type and S-type lignin.

CONCLUSION

This study would fill the gap of research on lignin in kudzu root residue and provide a theoretical reference for the utilisation of lignin in kudzu roots as well as a new thinking for the recycling of kudzu root resources.

Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in Aqueous Medium over Fe-Doped-Poly(heptazine imide) Photocatalysts: Unveiling the Bad Role of Hydroxyl Radical Generation on the Catalytic Performance

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation in aqueous media using visible photocatalysis is a green and sustainable route for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass derivatives. Several semiconductors have already been applied for this purpose; however, the use of Poly(heptazine imides), which has high crystallinity and a special cation exchange property that allows the replacement of the cation held between the layers of C3N4 structure by transition metal ions (TM), remains scarce. In this study, PHI(Na) was synthesized using a melamine/NaCl method and used as precursor to prepare metal (Fe, Co, Ni, or Cu)-doped PHI catalysts. The catalysts were tested for selective oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) in water and O2 atmosphere under blue LED radiation. The catalytic results revealed that the 0.1 wt% PHI(Fe) catalyst is the most efficient photocatalyst while higher Fe loading (1 and 2 wt%) favors the formation of Fe3+ clusters, which are responsible for the drop in HMF oxidation. Moreover, the 0.1 wt% PHI(Fe) photocatalyst has strong oxidative power due to its efficiency in H2O2 production, thus boosting the generation of nonselective hydroxyl radicals (●OH) via different pathways that can destroy HMF. We found that using 50 mM, the highest DFF production rate (393 μmol·h-1·g-1) was obtained in an aqueous medium under visible light radiation.

Efficient Conversion of Lignin to Aromatics via Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis over Niobium-Doped HZSM-5

A niobium-doped HZSM-5 (H[Nb]ZSM-5) was prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method. The morphology, phase structure, composition, pore structure, and acid content of the catalyst were characterized using a series of analysis techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and temperature programmed desorption measurements (NH₃-TPD). The H[Nb]ZSM-5 catalyst fully remained within the crystal framework and pore structure of HZSM-5. Meanwhile, introduction of niobium (V) endowed the catalyst with both Lewis acid and Bronsted acid sites. Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of alkali lignin was carried out through a pyrolysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) at 650 °C and atmospheric pressure. The results indicated that H[Nb]ZSM-5 can efficiently and selectively convert lignin into monoaromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs), compared to the control HZSM-5. Catalyzed by H[Nb]ZSM-5, the content of MAHs and aliphatic hydrocarbons reached 43.4% and 20.8%, respectively; while under the catalysis of HZSM-5, these values were 35.5% and 3.2%, respectively. H[Nb]ZSM-5 remarkably lowered the phenol content to approximately 2.8%, which is far lower than the content (24.9%) obtained under HZSM-5 catalysis.
