Abstract
Removal of contaminants from discharge water is vital and demands urgent assistance with the goal to keep clean water. Adsorption is one of the most common, efficient, and low-priced methods used in water treatment. Various polysaccharide-based gels have been used as efficient dye adsorbents from wastewater. This review summarizes cutting-edge research of the last decade of different hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pullulan, and dextran) concerning their dye adsorption efficiency. Beyond their natural abundance, attributes of polysaccharides such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost make them not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable candidates for water purification. The synthesis and dye removal performance together with the effect of diverse factors on gels retaining ability, kinetic, and isotherm models encountered in adsorption studies, are introduced. Thermodynamic parameters, sorbent recycling capacity along with conclusions and future prospects are also presented.

Abstract
This study investigated the removal of Reactive Blue 21 (RB 21) dye from aqueous solutions by adsorption, evaluating the waste fly ash (FA). The effects of the parameters, such as initial dye concentration (100-750 mg/L), initial pH (2.0-8.0), adsorbent dose (1.0-4.0 g/L), and temperature (298-323 K) on the adsorption process were investigated. The optimum initial pH value was 2.0 for the highest RB21 dye removal (75.2 mg/g). At optimized conditions (pH 2.0, an adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g/L, a dye concentration of 750 mg/L, and an equilibrium time of 72 h), the highest adsorption capacity was found to be 105.2 mg/g. Moreover, the results of the kinetic studies fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 103.41 mg/g at 323 K. ΔGads0 values were negative and varied from 11.64 to 9.50 kJ/mol in the temperature range of 298-323 K, the values of enthalpy (ΔHadso) and entropy (ΔSadso) of thermodynamics parameters were calculated as 37.62 kJ/mol and 86.67 J/mol K, respectively, indicating that this process was endothermic. Furthermore, the adsorbent costs for powdered activated carbon (PAC) and FA to remove 1 kg of RB 21 dye from aqueous solutions are calculated as 2.52 U.S. $ and 0.34 U.S. $, respectively. It is seen that the cost of FA is approximately 7.4 times lower than PAC. The results showed that FA, a low-cost industrial waste, was promising for the adsorption of RB 21 from aqueous solutions.

A magnetically recyclable carboxyl-functionalized chitosan composite for efficiently removing methyl orange from wastewater: Isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamic, and adsorption mechanism. Int J Biol Macromol 2023; 253:126631. Abstract
In this study, a kind of magnetically recyclable adsorbent for dyes was synthesized by grafting diethylenetriamine pentaacetate acid (DTPA) to the composite of Fe3O4 microspheres and crosslinked chitosan (CS). The microstructures, molecular structure, crystal structure, and magnetic hysteresis loops of the chitosan matrix adsorbent before and after grafting was characterized. The results suggested that DTPA was covalent bonded with the composite of Fe3O4 microspheres and chitosan. The modified composite has larger specific surface area and can realize rapid solid-liquid separation. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize the parameters affecting the adsorption of methyl orange (MO). The adsorption process could be better described by pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm equation, and its saturated adsorption capacity of the modified adsorbents was 1541.5 mg·g-1 at 25 °C, which was 1.40 times of that the unmodified adsorbent (1104.1 mg·g-1). The obtained values of the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous process. The regeneration experiment proved the stability and reproducibility of the adsorbent even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. The primary adsorption mechanism was electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The adsorbent could be potentially applied for removing dyes from wastewater in wide pH of range, especially acid wastewater.

Abstract
Water pollution has invaded seas, rivers, and tap water worldwide. This work employed commercial Mesquite charcoal as a low-cost precursor for fabricating Mesquite carbon nanoparticles (MUCNPs) using a ball-milling process. The scanning electron energy-dispersive microscopy results for MUCNPs revealed a particle size range of 52.4-75.0 nm. The particles were composed mainly of carbon with trace amounts of aluminum, potassium, calcium, titanium, and zinc. The X-ray diffraction peaks at 26.76 and 43.28 2θ° ascribed to the (002) and (100) planes indicated a crystalized graphite phase. Furthermore, the lack of FT-IR vibrations above 3000 cm-1 showed that the MUCNPs were not functionalized. The MUCNPs' pore diameter, volume, and surface area were 114.5 Ǻ, 0.363 cm3 g-1, and 113.45 m2 g-1. The batch technique was utilized to investigate MUCNPs' effectiveness in removing chlorohexidine gluconate (CHDNG) from water, which took 90 min to achieve equilibrium and had an adsorption capacity of 65.8 mg g-1. The adsorption of CHDNG followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the rate-limiting step being diffusion in the liquid film. The Langmuir isotherm dominated the CHDNG adsorption on the MUCNPs with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The thermodynamic studies revealed that CHDNG adsorption onto the MUCNPs was exothermic and favorable, and its spontaneity increased inversely with CHDNG concentration. The ball-milling-made MUCNPs demonstrated consistent efficiency through regeneration-reuse cycles.

Abstract
In this research, the preparation of a Ag3PO4/g-C3N4@MoS2 photocatalyst and the performance and mechanism of degradation of 2-amino-4-acetaminoanisole (AMA) were studied. The phase composition and morphology of the synthesized samples were comprehensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance (UV–Vis), and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic performance of the photocatalyst was evaluated by the visible-light catalytic degradation of the AMA. The experimental results show that the Ag3PO4/g-C3N4@MoS2 composite photocatalyst has stronger photocatalytic oxidation and reduction capabilities than Ag3PO4 and Ag3PO4/g-C3N4. The material only decreases by 31.3% after five cycles of use, indicating that the material has good light stability. Free radical capture experiments prove that photo-generated holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (·O2−) are the main active substances in the photocatalytic process. The fundamental studies in the present research provide a new perspective for constructing an innovative type of visible-light photocatalyst and a new way to promote the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Immobilization of Air-Stable Copper Nanoparticles on Graphene Oxide Flexible Hybrid Films for Smart Clothes. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14020237. Abstract
Through the use of organic/inorganic hybrid dispersants—which are composed of polymeric dispersant and two-dimension nanomaterial graphene oxide (GO)—copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were found to exhibit nano stability, air-stable characteristics, as well as long-term conductive stability. The polymeric dispersant consists of branched poly(oxyethylene)-segmented esters of trimellitic anhydride adduct (polyethylene glycol−trimethylolpropane−trimellitic anhydride, designated as PTT). PTT acts as a stabilizer for CuNPs, which are synthesized via in situ polymerization and redox reaction of the precursor Cu(CH3COO)2 within an aqueous system, and use graphene oxide to avoid the reduction reaction of CuNPs. The results show that after 30 days of storage the CuNPs/PTT/GO composite film maintains a highly conductive network (9.06 × 10−1 Ω/sq). These results indicate that organic/inorganic PTT/GO hybrid dispersants can effectively maintain the conductivity stability of CuNPs and address the problem of CuNP oxidation. Finally, the new CuNPs/PTT/GO composite film was applied to the electrocardiogram (ECG) smart clothes. This way, a stable and antioxidant-sensing electrode can be produced, which is expected to serve as a long-term ECG monitoring device.

An excellent antibacterial and high self-adhesive hydrogel can promote wound fully healing driven by its shrinkage under NIR. MATERIALS SCIENCE & ENGINEERING. C, MATERIALS FOR BIOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS 2021; 129:112395. [PMID: 34579914 DOI: 10.1016/j.msec.2021.112395] [Citation(s) in RCA: 15] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/10/2021] [Revised: 08/04/2021] [Accepted: 08/25/2021] [Indexed: 11/24/2022]
Abstract
The lacks of antibacterial properties, low adhesion and delayed wound healing of the hydrogel wound dressings limit their applications in wound treatment. To resolve these, a novel hydrogel composed of polydopamine (PDA), Ag and graphene oxide (GO) is fabricated for wound dressing via the chemical crosslinking of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS). The prepared hydrogel containing PDA@Ag5GO1 (Ag5GO1 denotes the mass ratio between Ag and GO is 5:1) exhibits effective antibacterial properties and high inhibition rate against E. coli and S. aureus. It shows high adhesion ability to various substrate materials, implying a simpler method to the wound obtained by self-fixing rather than suturing. More important, it can produce strong contractility under the irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR), exerting a centripetal force that helps accelerate wound healing. Thus, the hydrogel containing a high concentration PDA@Ag5GO1 irradiated by NIR can completely repair the wound defect (1.0 × 1.0 cm2) within 15 days, the wound healing rate can reach 100%, which was far higher than other groups. Taken together, the new hydrogel with excellent antibacterial, high adhesion and strong contractility will subvert the traditional treatment methods on wound defect, extending its new application range in wound dressing.
