Carbon nanotubes buckypapers: A new frontier in wastewater treatment technology

Occurrence of contaminants in water is one of the major global concerns humanity is still facing today: most of them are extremely toxic and dangerous for human health, obliging their removal for a proper and correct process of sanitation. Among wastewater treatment technologies, in the view of development of sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, membrane adsorption has proved to be a fast and simple method in the removal of pollutants, offering great contaminants recovery percentages, fast adsorbent regeneration and recycle, and easy scale-up. Due to their large surface area and tunable chemistry, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based materials revealed to be extraordinary adsorbents, exceeding by far performances of ordinary organic and inorganic membranes such as polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, ceramics, currently employed in membrane technologies for wastewater treatment. In consideration of this, the review aims to summarize recent developments in the field of carbon nanotubes-based materials for pollutants recovery from water through adsorption processes. After a brief introduction concerning what adsorption phenomenon is and how it is performed and governed by using carbon nanotubes-based materials, the review discusses into detail the employment of three common typologies of CNTs-based materials (CNTs powders, CNTs-doped polymeric membranes and CNTs membranes) in adsorption process for the removal of water pollutants. Particularly focus will be devoted on the emergent category of self-standing CNTs membranes (buckypapers), made entirely of carbon nanotubes, exhibiting superior performances than CNTs and CNTs-doped polymeric membranes in terms of preparation strategy, recovery percentages of pollutants and regeneration possibilities. The extremely encouraging results presented in this review aim to support and pave the way to the introduction of alternative and more efficient pathways in wastewater treatment technologies to contrast the problem of water pollution.

SCOBY-based bacterial cellulose as free standing electrodes for safer, greener and cleaner energy storage technology

Bacterial Cellulose (BC) derived from local market or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) was employed as the polymer matrix for hydroxyl multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-OH)-based electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC). Chitosan (CS)-sodium iodide (NaI)-glycerol (Gly) electrolyte systems were used as the polymer electrolyte. CS-NaI-Gly electrolyte possesses conductivity, potential stability and ionic transference number of (1.20 ± 0.26) × 10^-3 S cm^-2, 2.5 V and 0.99, respectively. For the electrodes, MWCNT-OH was observed to be well dispersed in the matrix of BC which was obtained via FESEM analysis. The inclusion of MWCNT-OH reduced the crystallinity of the BC polymeric structure. From EIS measurement, it was verified that the presence of MWCNT-OH decreased the electron transfer resistance of BC-based electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that the shape of the CV plots changed to a rectangular-like shape plot as more MWCNT were added, thus verifying the capacitive behavior. Various amount of MWCNT-OH was used in the fabrication of the EDLC where it was discovered that more MWCNT-OH leads to a better EDLC performance. The EDLC was tested for 5000 complete charge-discharge cycles. The optimum performance of this low voltage EDLC was obtained with 0.1 g MWCNT where the average specific capacitance was 8.80 F g^-1. The maximum power and energy density of the fabricated EDLC were 300 W kg^-1 and 1.6 W h kg^-1, respectively.

Facile fabrication of urchin-like carbon nanotube-modified Cu0.48Ni0.16Co2.36O4/CuO with high optical-infrared-microwave attenuation

Developing high-performance absorbers with a broad absorption band is a considerable challenge. Herein, carbon nanotube-modified Cu_0.48Ni_0.16Co_2.36O₄/CuO (C-CuNiCoO) composites were prepared using the one-pot hydrothermal method. The composites show good light scattering ability and longer light path due to their urchin-like structures, and lead to perfect absorption above 90% in optical ranges. Moreover, in the infrared ranges, the composites exhibited a high average mass extinction coefficient of 2.52 m^2.g^-1. The unique carbon modification favored the balance between impedance and strong loss capacity. Consequently, C-CuNiCoO achieved excellent absorption performance with a reflection loss up to -40.5 dB at 17.1 GHz. This study opens a new pathway for designing and synthesizing wideband absorption materials.
