Optimization of Platinum Nanoparticles (PtNPs) Synthesis by Acid Phosphatase Mediated Eco-Benign Combined with Photocatalytic and Bioactivity Assessments

Assessing anticancer properties of PEGylated platinum nanoparticles on human breast cancer cell lines usingin-vitroassays

This study describes the in-vitro cytotoxic effects of PEG-400 (Polyethylene glycol-400)-capped platinum nanoparticles (PEGylated Pt NPs) on both normal and cancer cell lines. Structural characterization was carried out using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy with an average crystallite size 5.7 nm, and morphological assessment using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of spherical platinum nanoparticles. The results of energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed a higher percentage fraction of platinum content by weight, along with carbon and oxygen, which are expected from the capping agent, confirming the purity of the platinum sample. The dynamic light scattering experiment revealed an average hydrodynamic diameter of 353.6 nm for the PEGylated Pt NPs. The cytotoxicity profile of PEGylated Pt NPs was assessed on a normal cell line (L929) and a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) using the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results revealed an IC50of 79.18 μg ml-1on the cancer cell line and non-toxic behaviour on the normal cell line. In the dual staining apoptosis assay, it was observed that the mortality of cells cultured in conjunction with platinum nanoparticles intensified and the proliferative activity of MCF-7 cells gradually diminished over time in correlation with the increasing concentration of the PEGylated Pt NPs sample. Thein vitroDCFH-DA assay for oxidative stress assessment in nanoparticle-treated cells unveiled the mechanistic background of the anticancer activity of PEGylated platinum nanoparticles as ROS-assisted mitochondrial dysfunction.

Unveiling Drimenol: A Phytochemical with Multifaceted Bioactivities

Drimenol, a phytochemical with a distinct odor is found in edible aromatic plants, such as Polygonum minus (known as kesum in Malaysia) and Drimys winteri. Recently, drimenol has received increasing attention owing to its diverse biological activities. This review offers the first extensive overview of drimenol, covering its sources, bioactivities, and derivatives. Notably, drimenol possesses a wide spectrum of biological activities, including antifungal, antibacterial, anti-insect, antiparasitic, cytotoxic, anticancer, and antioxidant effects. Moreover, some mechanisms of its activities, such as its antifungal effects against human mycoses and anticancer activities, have been investigated. However, there are still several crucial issues in the research on drimenol, such as the lack of experimental understanding of its pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and toxicity. By synthesizing current research findings, this review aims to present a holistic understanding of drimenol, paving the way for future studies and its potential utilization in diverse fields.

Nano guardians of the heart: A comprehensive investigation into the impact of silver nanoparticles on cardiovascular physiology

Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) constitute the leading cause of death at the moment. More effective treatments to combat CVDs are urgently required. Recent advances in nanotechnology have opened the door to new avenues for cardiovascular health treatment. Silver nanotechnology's inherent therapeutic powers and wide-ranging applications have made it the center of focus in recent years. This review aims to analyze the chemical, physical, and biological processes ofproducing AgNPs and determine their potential utility as theranostics. Despite significant advances, the precise mechanism by which AgNPs function in numerous biological systems remains a mystery. We hope that at the end of this review, you will better understand how AgNPs affect the cardiovascular system from the research done thus far. This endeavor thoroughly investigates the possible toxicological effects and risks associated with exposure to AgNPs. The findings shed light on novel applications of these versatile nanomaterials and point the way toward future research directions. Due to a shortage of relevant research, we will limit our attention to AgNPs as they pertain to CVDs. Future research can use this opportunity to investigate the many medical uses of AgNPs. Given their global prevalence, we fully endorse academics' efforts to prioritize nanotechnological techniques in pursuing risk factor targeting for cardiovascular diseases. The critical need for innovative solutions to this widespread health problem is underscored by the fact that this technique may help with the early diagnosis and treatment of CVDs.

Synthesis of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal/ZnO nanohybrids using Oxytenanthera abyssinica cellulose and zinc nitrate hexahydrate for radical scavenging, photocatalytic, and antibacterial activities

The extremely low antioxidant, photocatalytic, and antibacterial properties of cellulose limit its application in the biomedical and environmental sectors. To improve these properties, nanohybrides were prepared by mixing carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CCNCs) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate. Data from FTIR, XRD, DLS, and SEM spectra showed that, ZnO nanoparticles, with a size ranging from 94 to 351 nm and the smallest nanoparticle size of 164.18 nm, were loaded onto CCNCs. CCNCs/ZnO1 nanohybrids demonstrated superior antibacterial, photocatalytic, and antioxidant performance. More considerable antibacterial activity was shown with a zone of inhibition ranging from 26.00 ± 1.00 to 40.33 ± 2.08 mm and from 31.66 ± 3.51 to 41.33 ± 1.15 mm against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. Regarding photodegradation properties, the maximum value (∼91.52 %) of photocatalytic methylene blue degradation was observed after 75 min exposure to a UV lamp. At a concentration of 125.00 μm/ml of the CCNC/ZnO1 nanohybrids sample, 53.15 ± 1.03 % DPPH scavenging activity was obtained with an IC50 value of 117.66 μm/ml. A facile, cost-effective, one-step synthesis technique was applied to fabricate CCNCs/ZnO nanohybrids at mild temperature using Oxytenanthera abyssinica carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals as biotemplate. The result showed that CCNCs/ZnO nanohybrids possess potential applications in developing advanced functional materials for dye removal and antibacterial and antioxidant applications.

Catalytic and anti-cancer properties of platinum, gold, silver, and bimetallic Au-Ag nanoparticles synthesized by Bacillus sp. bacteria

Metallic nanoparticles play a significant role in the catalysis of chemical processes, besides, bimetallic nanoparticles with abundant active sites can reduce metallic nanoparticles toxicity in addition to increasing their catalytic performances. In this work, the platinum, gold, and silver nanoparticles are bio-synthesized using a native bacterium (GFCr-4). Also, the Au-Ag and Au@Ag bimetallic nanoparticles with alloy and core-shell structures, respectively, are biologically synthesized. To improve the synthesis, the effects of various factors like pH, temperature, electron donor, and ionic liquids were investigated. The as-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized with different techniques. The microscope images and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis confirm the uniform distribution of as-synthesized nanoparticles with average sizes of 25, 30, 47, 77, and 86 nm obtained for Ag, Au, Pt, Au-Ag alloy, and Au@Ag core-shell, respectively. The catalytic performances of as-synthesized nanoparticles were investigated. The Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles exhibit better catalytic performance than the as-synthesized metallic Au nanoparticles, according to the Gewald reaction. According to the photocatalytic study, the yield can be increased by up to 92% by using PtNPs in the presence of a green LED. Additionally, for the first time, PtNPs were utilized as an effective catalyst in a peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (POCL) system in the presence of nuclear fast red (NFR) as a novel fluorophore. In addition, the results of the MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay revealed that the synthesized eco-friendly nanoparticles have a low effect on the lethality of 3T3 normal cells whereas MCF-7 cancer cells were inhibited up to 77.3% after treatment by PtNPs nanoparticles.

The Recent Development of Acoustic Sensors as Effective Chemical Detecting Tools for Biological Cells and Their Bioactivities

One of the most significant developed technologies is the use of acoustic waves to determine the chemical structures of biological tissues and their bioactivities. In addition, the use of new acoustic techniques for in vivo visualizing and imaging of animal and plant cellular chemical compositions could significantly help pave the way toward advanced analytical technologies. For instance, acoustic wave sensors (AWSs) based on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) were used to identify the aromas of fermenting tea such as linalool, geraniol, and trans-2-hexenal. Therefore, this review focuses on the use of advanced acoustic technologies for tracking the composition changes in plant and animal tissues. In addition, a few key configurations of the AWS sensors and their different wave pattern applications in biomedical and microfluidic media progress are discussed.

Evaluation of carbon dioxide elevation on phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of red onion (Allium cepa L.) during postharvest storage

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is considered one of the eco-related key factors that negatively affect global climatic change. Also, CO₂ can play an important role in the postharvest quality of the agri-products. In this study, the impact of CO₂ on the quality of postharvest onions that were stored at 23 °C for 8 weeks was investigated. The weight loss, phenolic, flavonoid, flavanol, anthocyanin, antioxidant activity, and soluble sugar were analyzed during the study period. The results showed that 20% CO₂ treatment was significantly (P > 0.05) more effective than 15% CO₂ and control in inhibiting weight loss. Additionally, 20% CO₂ treatment significantly retained higher antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, APX, and SOD than 15% CO₂ and control. During storage, 20% CO₂ treatment significantly (P < 0.05) improved glucose, fructose, and sucrose levels by more than 15% CO₂ exposure and control groups. Besides the chlorogenic acid, kaempferol and quercetin were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the 20% CO₂ than in the 15% CO₂ after 2 weeks of storage. In conclusion, this study's novelty comes from the broad prospects of using CO₂ for maximizing the stored onion phytochemical functionality that is usually affected by the room temperature long storage. This will help in the onion shelf-life extension by considering the quality-related attributes.

Acid protease functionalized novel silver nanoparticles (APTs-AgNPs): A new approach towards photocatalytic and biological applications

Herein, we described for the first time, an efficient biogenic synthesis of APTs-AgNPs using acid protease from Melilotus indicus leaf extract. The acid protease (APTs) has an essential role in the stabilization, reduction, and capping of APTs-AgNPs. The crystalline nature, size, and surface morphology of APTs-AgNPs were examined using different techniques such as XRD, UV, FTIR, SEM, EDS, HRTEM, and DLS analysis. The generated APTs-AgNPs demonstrated notable performance as dual functionality (photocatalyst and antibacterial disinfection). By destroying 91 % of methylene blue (MB) in <90 min of exposure, APTs-AgNPs demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic activity. APTs-AgNPs also showed remarkable stability as a photocatalyst after five test cycles. Furthermore, the APTs-AgNPs was found to be a potent antibacterial agent with inhibition zones of 30(±0.5 mm), 27(±0.4 mm), 16(±0.1 mm), and 19(±0.7 mm) against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria, respectively, under both light and dark conditions. Furthermore, APTs-AgNPs effectively scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, demonstrating their potent antioxidant activity. The outcomes of this study thus demonstrates the dual functionality of APTs-AgNPs produced using the biogenic approach method as a photocatalyst and an antibacterial agent for effective microbial and environmental control.

Excellent photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of bio-activated carbon decorated magnesium oxide nanoparticles

Green production of nanomaterials are restrict toxic substances and motivated the noxious free environment. Photocatalysis and antibacterial resistance are more promising and efficient fields for their chemical reductants and clean environment. Herein, we adopted a green and simple method for the biosynthesis of MgO NPs using Manilkara zapota as a bio source. Recently, the green synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles has been a keen interest amongst researchers and scientists due to its simplicity eco-friendliness, non-toxic, inexpensive and potential to perform as an antibacterial agent. Activated carbon/Magnesium oxide (AC/MgO) photocatalyst was blended through a simple solution evaporation method. The surface electron microscopy (SEM) study reviles that AC/MgO had smooth and aggregated particles. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) study confirms the structural formation and incorporation of nanoparticles into the AC matrix. Results confirmed the flourishing integration of MgO NPs over the activated carbon matrix. The electron movement and valency of AC/MgO photocatalyst reduced the bandgap and their findings were characterized by ultra visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The blended AC/MgO photocatalyst was analyzed for photodegradation of Rhodamine- B (Rh-B) dye using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The degradation study projects that the AC/MgO photocatalyst degrades (Rh-B) dye with 99% efficiency under simulated solar irradiation. This efficient degradation of (Rh-B) dye by AC/MgO photocatalyst is ascribed to the synergetic AC as catalytic support and adsorbent and MgO as photocatalyst. Finally, the photocatalytic material shows a better bactericidal effect in both gram-positive bacteria Escherichia coli-745 and gram-negative bacteria Staphylococcus aureus-9779. The AC/MgO photocatalyst is effectively used in bacteriocidal and photocatalytic removal of dyes and can be used for further development of water reuse and bio-medical fields. In addition, this research shows a viable method for synthesizing a cheap and effective AC/MgO for the photocatalytic destruction of organic pollutants.

Physical, Chemical, and Antioxidant Characterization of Nano-Pomegranate Peel and Its Impact on Lipid Oxidation of Refrigerated Meat Ball

Pomegranate peel (CPP), enriched with bioactive constituents, had potent antioxidant features. Therefore, it is worth finding out functional and antioxidant features of the nanoscale pomegranate peel. The nanoscale of pomegranate peel was prepared by ultrafine grinding in a ball mill for 45 min (NPP45) and 90 min (NPP90). The physical (SEM, TEM, FTIR, and XRD) and chemical characteristics (phenolics, flavonoids, DPPH scavenging activity, FRAP, and reducing power) of nanoparticles were studied. The quality aspects of cold stored (5 ± 2°C) meatballs formulated with 0.5% (W/W) of nano-peel powder were evaluated. Similarly, FTIR spectra and XRD patterns were recorded for nano and crude pomegranate peel samples. Generally, grinding the crude peel for 45 and 90 min enhanced its scavenging activity, reducing power, FRAP, total phenolic, and flavonoid by a range of 12.58 to 20.37 and 20.57% to 35.18%, respectively. The addition of crude/nanosized peel to the meat ball diminish ( $p<0.05$ ) formation of thiobarbituric acid (TBARS), peroxide (PV), and volatile nitrogen and kept the sensory attributes up to 9 days of cold storage. No significant differences were noticed in PV and TBARS of meatballs formulated with 0.5% NPP90 and 0.1% BHT, which suggests the potential use of nanoscale pomegranate peel as natural substitutes to BHT in meat products.
