The Role of Interdigitated Electrodes in Printed and Flexible Electronics

Flexible electronics, also referred to as printable electronics, represent an interesting technology for implementing electronic circuits via depositing electronic devices onto flexible substrates, boosting their possible applications. Among all flexible electronics, interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) are currently being used for different sensor applications since they offer significant benefits beyond their functionality as capacitors, like the generation of high output voltage, fewer fabrication steps, convenience of application of sensitive coatings, material imaging capability and a potential of spectroscopy measurements via electrical excitation frequency variation. This review examines the role of IDEs in printed and flexible electronics since they are progressively being incorporated into a myriad of applications, envisaging that the growth pattern will continue in the next generations of flexible circuits to come.

The importance, benefits, and future of nanobiosensors for infectious diseases

Infectious diseases, caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi, are crucial for efficient disease management, reducing morbidity and mortality rates and controlling disease spread. Traditional laboratory-based diagnostic methods face challenges such as high costs, time consumption, and a lack of trained personnel in resource-poor settings. Diagnostic biosensors have gained momentum as a potential solution, offering advantages such as low cost, high sensitivity, ease of use, and portability. Nanobiosensors are a promising tool for detecting and diagnosing infectious diseases such as coronavirus disease, human immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis. These sensors use nanostructured carbon nanotubes, graphene, and nanoparticles to detect specific biomarkers or pathogens. They operate through mechanisms like the lateral flow test platform, where a sample containing the biomarker or pathogen is applied to a test strip. If present, the sample binds to specific recognition probes on the strip, indicating a positive result. This binding event is visualized through a colored line. This review discusses the importance, benefits, and potential of nanobiosensors in detecting infectious diseases.

Lithography-free interdigitated electrodes by trench-filling patterning on polymer substrate for Alzheimer's disease detection

Microelectrodes have played a crucial role in electrochemistry for the last few decades. However, the conventional lithographic processes, the key players in fabrication, are nonetheless technologically challenging, pricey, and lack reproducibility. In this work has developed a novel and low-cost patterned-replication fabrication technology for interdigitated electrode array (IDA) electrodes on the polymer substrate. Conventional UV-lithography has been utilized to fabricate the nickel IDA electrode pattern as a master mold on the stainless-steel substrate, which was replicated onto the polymer substrate by the hot-emboss technique. Then, gold was deposited on the replicated wafer by electron beam evaporation, and finally adhesive tape lift-off was used to obtain the gold IDA electrode. The fabricated IDA electrode was applied for electrochemical detection of various p-aminophenol (PAP) concentrations as a representative biomarker with a detection limit of 0.01 nM. Finally, different levels of amyloid beta 42 (Aß42) and amyloid beta aggregated (Aß Agg.), two Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers, were measured using the developed IDA electrode via e-ELISA using enzyme by-products PAP. While quantified, the proposed IDA electrode successfully detects Aß42 and Aß Agg. with the lower detection limit (LOD) of 3.9 and 7.81 pg/ml, respectively.

Micro-interdigitated electrodes genosensor based on Au-deposited nanoparticles for early detection of cervical cancer

Genosensor-based electrodes mediated with nanoparticles (NPs) have tremendously developed in medical diagnosis. Herein, we report a facile, rapid, low cost and highly sensitive biosensing strategy for early detection of HPV 18 using gold-nanoparticles (AuNPs) deposited on micro-IDEs. This study represents surface charge transduction of micro-interdigitated electrodes (micro-IDE) alumina insulated with silica, independent and mini genosensor modified with colloidal gold NPs (AuNPs), and determination of gene hybridization for early detection of cervical cancer. The surface of AuNPs deposited micro-IDE functionalized with optimized 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) followed by hybridization with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) virus to develop DNA genosensor. The results of ssDNA hybridization with the ssDNA target of human papillomavirus (HPV) 18 have affirmed that micro-IDE functionalized with colloidal AuNPs resulted in the lowest detection at 0.529 aM. Based on coefficient regression, micro-IDE functionalized with AuNPs produces better results in the sensitivity test (R2 = 0.99793) than unfunctionalized micro-IDE.

Enzymatic Electrochemical/Fluorescent Nanobiosensor for Detection of Small Chemicals

The detection of small molecules has attracted enormous interest in various fields, including the chemical, biological, and healthcare fields. In order to achieve such detection with high accuracy, up to now, various types of biosensors have been developed. Among those biosensors, enzymatic biosensors have shown excellent sensing performances via their highly specific enzymatic reactions with small chemical molecules. As techniques used to implement the sensing function of such enzymatic biosensors, electrochemical and fluorescence techniques have been mostly used for the detection of small molecules because of their advantages. In addition, through the incorporation of nanotechnologies, the detection property of each technique-based enzymatic nanobiosensors can be improved to measure harmful or important small molecules accurately. This review provides interdisciplinary information related to developing enzymatic nanobiosensors for small molecule detection, such as widely used enzymes, target small molecules, and electrochemical/fluorescence techniques. We expect that this review will provide a broad perspective and well-organized roadmap to develop novel electrochemical and fluorescent enzymatic nanobiosensors.

Ultramicro Interdigitated Array Electrode Chip with Optimized Construction for Detection of Ammonia Nitrogen in Water

Ammonia nitrogen is a common contaminant in water and its determination is important for environmental protection. In this paper, an electrochemical sensor based on an ultramicro interdigitated array electrode (UIAE) chip with optimized construction was fabricated with Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) technology and developed to realize the detection of ammonia nitrogen in water. The effects of spacing-to-width ratio and width of the working electrode on UIAE's electrochemical characteristics and its ammonia nitrogen detection performance were studied by finite element simulation and experiment. The results demonstrated that the smaller the spacing-to-width ratio, the stronger generation-collection effect, and the smaller the electrode width, the stronger the edge effect, which led to an easier steady-state reach, a higher response current, and better ammonia nitrogen determination performance. The fabricated UIAE chip with optimized construction showed the linear detection range of 0.15 mg/L~2.0 mg/L (calculated as N), the sensitivity of 0.4181 μA·L·mg^-1, and good anti-interference performance, as well as a long lifetime. UIAE based on bare Pt was successfully applied to ammonia nitrogen detection in water by optimizing structure, which might broaden the methods of ammonia nitrogen detection in water.
