Chitosan nanocomposite for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: A review

Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering have emerged as a multidisciplinary promising field in the quest to address the limitations of traditional medical approaches. One of the key aspects of these fields is the development of such types of biomaterials that can mimic the extracellular matrix and provide a conducive environment for tissue regeneration. In this regard, chitosan has played a vital role which is a naturally derived linear bi-poly-aminosaccharide, and has gained significant attention due to its biocompatibility and unique properties. Chitosan possesses many unique physicochemical properties, making it a significant polysaccharide for different applications such as agriculture, nutraceutical, biomedical, food, nutraceutical, packaging, etc. as well as significant material for developing next-generation hydrogel and bio-scaffolds for regenerative medicinal applications. Moreover, chitosan can be easily modified to incorporate desirable properties, such as improved mechanical strength, enhanced biodegradability, and controlled release of bioactive molecules. Blending chitosan with other polymers or incorporating nanoparticles into its matrix further expands its potential in tissue engineering applications. This review summarizes the most recent studies of the last 10 years based on chitosan, blends, and nanocomposites and their application in bone tissue engineering, hard tissue engineering, dental implants, dental tissue engineering, dental fillers, and cartilage tissue engineering.

Synthesis and characterization of magnetic Ag-Fe3O4@polymer hybrid nanocomposite systems with promising antibacterial application

INTRODUCTION

Bacterial infections caused by different strains of bacteria still one of the most important disorders affecting humans worldwide. Polymers nanocomposite systems could be considered as an alternative to conventional antibiotics to eradicate bacterial infections.

SIGNIFICANCE

In an attempt to enhance the antibacterial performance of silver and iron oxide nanoparticles, decrease their aggregation and toxicity, a polymeric hybrid nanocomposite system combining both nanoparticles is produced.

METHODS

Magnetic Ag-Fe3O4@polymer hybrid nanocomposites prepared using different polymers, namely polyethylene glycol 4000, ethyl cellulose, and chitosan were synthesized via wet impregnation and ball-milling techniques. The produced nanocomposites were tested for their physical properties and antibacterial activities.

RESULTS

XRD, FT-IR, VSM, and TEM results confirmed the successful preparation of hybrid nanocomposites. Hybrid nanocomposites have average crystallite sizes in the following order Ag-Fe3O4@CS (8.9 nm) < Ag-Fe3O4@EC (9.0 nm) < Ag-Fe3O4@PEG4000 (9.4 nm) and active surface area of this trend Ag-Fe3O4@CS (130.4 m2g-1) > Ag-Fe3O4@EC (128.9 m2g-1) > Ag-Fe3O4@PEG4000 (123.4 m2g-1). In addition, they have a saturation magnetization in this order: Ag-Fe3O4@PEG4000 (44.82 emu/g) > Ag-Fe3O4@EC (40.14 emu/g) > Ag-Fe3O4@CS (22.90 emu/g). Hybrid nanocomposites have a pronounced antibacterial action against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus intermedius compared to iron oxide nanoparticles and positive antibacterial drug. In addition, both Ag-Fe3O4@EC and Ag-Fe3O4@CS have a lower MIC values compared to Ag-Fe3O4@PEG and positive control.

CONCLUSION

Magnetic Ag-Fe3O4 hybrid nanocomposites could be promising antibacterial nanomaterials and could pave the way for the development of new materials with even more unique properties and applications.

Antibacterial nanocomposite of chitosan/silver nanocrystals/graphene oxide (ChAgG) development for its potential use in bioactive wound dressings

An adequate wound dressing reduces time of healing, provides cost-effective care, thereby improving patients' quality life. An antimicrobial bioactivity is always desired, for that reason, the objective of this work is to design an antimicrobial nanocomposite of chitosan/silver nanocrystals/graphene oxide (ChAgG). ChAgG nanostructured composite material is composed of chitosan from corn (Ch), and silver nanocrystals from garlic (Allium sativum). The nanocomposite obtained is the result of a series of experiments combining the graphene oxide (GrOx) with two members of the Amaryllidaceae family; garlic and onion (Allium cebae), which contain different sulfur materials. The characterization arrays confirmed the successful production of silver crystal, graphene oxidation and the blending of both components. The role of the chitosan as a binder between graphene and silver nanocrystals is proved. Moreover, the study discusses garlic as an optimal source that permits the synthesis of silver nanocrystals (AgNCs) (⁓ 2 to 10 nm) with better thermal and crystallinity properties. It was also confirmed the successful production of the ChAgG nanocomposite. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were used to demonstrate the antibacterial bioactivity and L-929 fibroblast cells were utilized to visualize their biocompatibility. The proposed ChAgG nanomaterial will be useful for functionalizing specific fiber network that represents current challenging research in the fabrication of bioactive wound dressings.

Sonopiezoelectric Nanomedicine and Materdicine

Endogenous electric field is ubiquitous in a multitude of important living activities such as bone repair, cell signal transduction, and nerve regeneration, signifying that regulating the electric field in organisms is highly beneficial to maintain organism health. As an emerging and promising research direction, piezoelectric nanomedicine and materdicine precisely activated by ultrasound with synergetic advantages of deep tissue penetration, remote spatiotemporal selectivity, and mechanical-electrical energy interconversion, have been progressively utilized for disease treatment and tissue repair by participating in the modulation of endogenous electric field. This specific nanomedicine utilizing piezoelectric effect activated by ultrasound is typically regarded as "sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine". This comprehensive review summarizes and discusses the substantially employed sonopiezoelectric nanomaterials and nanotherapies to provide an insight into the internal mechanism of the corresponding biological behavior/effect of sonopiezoelectric biomaterials in versatile disease treatments. This review primarily focuses on the sonopiezoelectric biomaterials for biosensing, drug delivery, tumor therapy, tissue regeneration, antimicrobia, and further illuminates the underlying sonopiezoelectric mechanism. In addition, the challenges and developments/prospects of sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine are analyzed for promoting the further clinical translation. It is earnestly expected that this kind of nanomedicine/biomaterials-enabled sonopiezoelectric technology will provoke the comprehensive investigation and promote the clinical development of the next-generation multifunctional materdicine.

Facile One-Step Electrospinning Process to Prepare AgNPs-Loaded PLA and PLA/PEO Mats with Antibacterial Activity

Nanofibers can play an important role in developing new kinds of medical applications. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) antibacterial mats containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by a simple one-step electrospinning method that allows AgNPs to be synthesized simultaneously with the preparation of the electrospinning solution. The electrospun nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetry, while silver release over time was monitored by inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity was tested against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli by colony forming unit (CFU) count on agar after 15, 24 and 48 h of incubation. AgNPs were found to be mainly concentrated in the PLA nanofiber core, and the mats showed steady but slow Ag release in the short term; in contrast, AgNPs were uniformly distributed in the PLA/PEO nanofibers, which released up to 20% of their initial silver content in 12 h. A significant (p < 0.05) antimicrobial effect towards both tested bacteria, highlighted by a reduction in the CFU/mL counts, was observed for the nanofibers of PLA and PLA/PEO embedded with AgNPs, with a stronger effect exerted by the latter, confirming the more efficient silver release from these samples. The prepared electrospun mats may have good potential for use in the biomedical field, particularly in wound dressing applications, where a targeted delivery of the antimicrobial agent is highly desirable to avoid infections.

Overview of Antimicrobial Biodegradable Polyester-Based Formulations

As the clinical complications induced by microbial infections are known to have life-threatening side effects, conventional anti-infective therapy is necessary, but not sufficient to overcome these issues. Some of their limitations are connected to drug-related inefficiency or resistance and pathogen-related adaptive modifications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for advanced antimicrobials and antimicrobial devices. A challenging, yet successful route has been the development of new biostatic or biocide agents and biomaterials by considering the indisputable advantages of biopolymers. Polymers are attractive materials due to their physical and chemical properties, such as compositional and structural versatility, tunable reactivity, solubility and degradability, and mechanical and chemical tunability, together with their intrinsic biocompatibility and bioactivity, thus enabling the fabrication of effective pharmacologically active antimicrobial formulations. Besides representing protective or potentiating carriers for conventional drugs, biopolymers possess an impressive ability for conjugation or functionalization. These aspects are key for avoiding malicious side effects or providing targeted and triggered drug delivery (specific and selective cellular targeting), and generally to define their pharmacological efficacy. Moreover, biopolymers can be processed in different forms (particles, fibers, films, membranes, or scaffolds), which prove excellent candidates for modern anti-infective applications. This review contains an overview of antimicrobial polyester-based formulations, centered around the effect of the dimensionality over the properties of the material and the effect of the production route or post-processing actions.

Ultrasound-mediated piezoelectric nanoparticle modulation of intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system for rate control in atrial fibrillation

Rate control is a cornerstone of atrial fibrillation treatment. Barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNPs) are piezoelectric nanomaterials that can generate local electromagnetic fields under ultrasound activation, stimulating nearby neuronal tissue. This study aimed to modulate the inferior right ganglionated plexus (IRGP) of the heart and reduce the ventricular rate during rapid atrial pacing (RAP)-induced atrial fibrillation using ultrasound-mediated BTNPs. Adult male beagles were randomly divided into a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) group (n = 6) and a BTNP group (n = 6). PBS or nanoparticles were injected into the IRGP of both groups before RAP. The biological safety of the material was evaluated according to electrophysiology recordings, thermal effects and level of inflammation. Compared to the PBS group, the BaTiO₃ piezoelectric nanoparticle group had reduced ventricular rates in the sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation models after stimulating the IRGP by applying ultrasound. In addition, transient stimulation by BTNPs did not lead to sustained neuronal excitation in the IRGP. The activation of the BTNPs did not induce inflammation or thermal damage effects in the IRGP. Ultrasound-mediated BTNP neuromodulation can significantly reduce the ventricular rate by stimulating the IRGP. Thus, ultrasound-mediated BTNP neuromodulation is a potential therapy for atrial fibrillation rate control.

Functional silver nanoparticles synthesis from sustainable point of view: 2000 to 2023 ‒ A review on game changing materials

The green and facile synthesis of metallic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is getting tremendous attention for exploring superior applications because of their small dimensions and shape. AgNPs are already proven materials for superior coloration, biocidal, thermal, UV-protection, and mechanical performance. Originally, some conventional chemical-based reducing agents were used to synthesize AgNPs, but these posed potential risks, especially for enhanced toxicity. This became a driving force to innovate plant-based sustainable and green metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Moreover, the synthesized NPs using plant-based derivatives could be tuned and regulated to achieve the required shape and size of the AgNPs. AgNPs synthesized from naturally derived materials are safe, economical, eco-friendly, facile, and convenient, which is also motivating researchers to find greener routes and viable options, utilizing various parts of plants like flowers, stems, heartwood, leaves and carbohydrates like chitosan to meet the demands. This article intends to provide a comprehensive review of all aspects of AgNP materials, including green synthesis methodology and mechanism, incorporation of advanced technologies, morphological and elemental study, functional properties (coloration, UV-protection, biocidal, thermal, and mechanical properties), marketing value, future prospects and application, especially for the last 20 years or more. The article also includes a SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis regarding the use of AgNPs. This report would facilitate the industries and consumers associated with AgNP synthesis and application through fulfilling the demand for sustainable, feasible, and low-cost product manufacturing protocols and their future prospects.

Antimicrobial Activity of Blow Spun PLA/Gelatin Nanofibers Containing Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles against Wound Infection-Causing Bacteria

One of the main challenges in wound healing is the wound infection due to various causes, of which moisture is the most important reason. Owing to this fact, wound dressings that can collect wound moisture in addition to showing antibacterial properties have provided an important basis for wound healing research. In this study, gelatin and poly lactic acid (PLA) polymers were used in a wound dressing textile to provide gelation and structure strength properties, respectively. Meanwhile, silver nanoparticles (SNPs) synthesized through the green method were integrated into these fibers to provide the formed textile with antibacterial properties. Nanoparticles were made using donkey dung extract, and nanofibers were produced by the solution blow spinning method which has high production efficiency and low energy consumption among spinning methods. The produced nanoparticles were characterized and evaluated by UV-Vis, DLS, XRD, and FTIR methods, and the production of silver nanoparticles that were coated with metabolites in the extract was proven. In addition, the morphology and diameter of the resulted fibers and presence of nanoparticles were confirmed by the SEM method. The size and size distribution of the synthesized fibers were determined through analyzing SEM results. Gelatin nanofibers demonstrated a mean size of 743 nm before and 773 nm after nanoparticle coating. PLA nanofibers demonstrated a mean size of 57 nm before and 182 nm after nanoparticle coating. Finally, 335 nm was the mean diameter size of gelatin/PLA/SNPs nanofibers. Also, the textiles synthesized by PLA and gelatin which contained silver nanoparticles showed higher antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative species compared to PLA and gelatin tissues without nanoparticles. Cytotoxicity test on L929 cells showed that silver nanoparticles incorporated textiles of PLA and gelatin show a very low level and non-significant toxicity compared to the free particles.

Fe(iii) and Cr(vi) ions' removal using AgNPs/GO/chitosan nanocomposite as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment

Heavy metal ions in water refer to significant risks to the biological system due to their high toxicity. Therefore, the decontamination of water polluted by heavy metal ions attracts significant interest of researchers. Adsorption by nanomaterials has been a widely used technique for removing heavy metal ions from water. Chitosan was extracted from shrimp shellfish and mixed with laboratory-prepared AgNPs/GO in the ratio of 3 : 1. A series of tests evaluates the best condition of pH, amount of adsorbent, retention time, stirring speed, temp, and initial concentration. The research was conducted under various conditions. Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherms were also tested. Also, the column adsorption experiment was carried out on industrial wastewater at different flow rates and column bed heights. The optimal values of the contact time, pH, and adsorbent dose of Cr(vi) were found to be 80 min, 4, and 0.1 g 100 mL⁻¹, respectively, at room temperature (30 °C), agitation at 150 rpm, and initial concentration of 50 ppm. On the other hand, the optimal value of contact time, pH, and adsorbent dose of Fe(iii) were found to be 30 min, 6, and 0.02 g 100 mL⁻¹, respectively, at room temp (30 °C) with a stirring speed of 250 rpm and an initial concentration of 40 ppm. For Cr(vi) and Fe(iii), equilibrium studies show that the data fit the Freundlich isotherm well (correlation coefficient, R² = 0.98) (III). A link between the pseudo-second order active model and data fitting the pseudo-first order active models were made. Within the intraparticle diffusion model, there are four stages that the mechanism must go through before it is at equilibrium. The adsorbent was tested in an industrial adsorbent column. This test proves that the nanocomposite's adsorption capacity can be restored by washing it with 0.1 M HCl, as shown by the periodicity test. After four cycles, the amount of Cr(vi) adsorbed on AgNPs/GO/chitosan was just 20%, which is insufficient for further adsorption experiments. Cr(vi) removal rates (%R) decreased slightly.

Special Features of Polyester-Based Materials for Medical Applications

This article presents current possibilities of using polyester-based materials in hard and soft tissue engineering, wound dressings, surgical implants, vascular reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, and other medical applications. The review summarizes the recent literature on the key features of processing methods and potential suitable combinations of polyester-based materials with improved physicochemical and biological properties that meet the specific requirements for selected medical fields. The polyester materials used in multiresistant infection prevention, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as aspects covering environmental concerns, current risks and limitations, and potential future directions are also addressed. Depending on the different features of polyester types, as well as their specific medical applications, it can be generally estimated that 25–50% polyesters are used in the medical field, while an increase of at least 20% has been achieved since the COVID-19 pandemic started. The remaining percentage is provided by other types of natural or synthetic polymers; i.e., 25% polyolefins in personal protection equipment (PPE).

Nanotechnology as a Novel Approach in Combating Microbes Providing an Alternative to Antibiotics

The emergence of infectious diseases promises to be one of the leading mortality factors in the healthcare sector. Although several drugs are available on the market, newly found microorganisms carrying multidrug resistance (MDR) against which existing drugs cannot function effectively, giving rise to escalated antibiotic dosage therapies and the need to develop novel drugs, which require time, money, and manpower. Thus, the exploitation of antimicrobials has led to the production of MDR bacteria, and their prevalence and growth are a major concern. Novel approaches to prevent antimicrobial drug resistance are in practice. Nanotechnology-based innovation provides physicians and patients the opportunity to overcome the crisis of drug resistance. Nanoparticles have promising potential in the healthcare sector. Recently, nanoparticles have been designed to address pathogenic microorganisms. A multitude of processes that can vary with various traits, including size, morphology, electrical charge, and surface coatings, allow researchers to develop novel composite antimicrobial substances for use in different applications performing antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial activity of inorganic and carbon-based nanoparticles can be applied to various research, medical, and industrial uses in the future and offer a solution to the crisis of antimicrobial resistance to traditional approaches. Metal-based nanoparticles have also been extensively studied for many biomedical applications. In addition to reduced size and selectivity for bacteria, metal-based nanoparticles have proven effective against pathogens listed as a priority, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, antimicrobial studies of nanoparticles were carried out not only in vitro but in vivo as well in order to investigate their efficacy. In addition, nanomaterials provide numerous opportunities for infection prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and biofilm control. This study emphasizes the antimicrobial effects of nanoparticles and contrasts nanoparticles' with antibiotics' role in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms. Future prospects revolve around developing new strategies and products to prevent, control, and treat microbial infections in humans and other animals, including viral infections seen in the current pandemic scenarios.

Osteoinductive and antimicrobial mechanisms of graphene-based materials for enhancing bone tissue engineering

Graphene-based materials (GMs) have great application prospects in bone tissue engineering due to their osteoinductive ability and antimicrobial activity. GMs induce osteogenic differentiation through several mechanisms and pathways in bone tissue engineering. First of all, the surface and high hardness of the porous folds of graphene or graphene oxide (GO) can generate mechanical stimulation to initiate a cascade of reactions that promote osteogenic differentiation without any chemical inducers. In addition, change of the extracellular matrix (ECM), regulation of macrophage polarization, the oncostatin M (OSM) signaling pathway, the MAPK signaling pathway, the BMP signaling pathway, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and other pathways are involved in GMs' regulation of osteogenesis. In bone tissue engineering, GMs prevent the formation of microbial biofilms mainly through preventing microbial adhesion and killing them. The former is mainly achieved by reducing surface free energy (SFE) and increasing hydrophobicity. The latter mainly includes oxidative stress and photothermal/photodynamic effects. Graphene and its derivatives (GDs) are mainly combined with bioactive ceramic materials, metal materials and macromolecular polymers to play an antimicrobial effect in bone tissue engineering. Concentration, number of layers, and type of GDs often affect the antimicrobial activity of GMs. In this paper, we reviewed relevant osteoinductive and antimicrobial mechanisms of GMs and their applications in bone tissue engineering.

Thermal Stability and Decomposition Mechanism of PLA Nanocomposites with Kraft Lignin and Tannin

Packaging applications cover approximately 40% of the total plastics production, whereas food packaging possesses a high proportion within this context. Due to several environmental concerns, petroleum-based polymers have been shifted to their biobased counterparts. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has been proved the most dynamic biobased candidate as a substitute of the conventional polymers. Despite its numerous merits, PLA exhibits some limitations, and thus reinforcing agents are commonly investigated as fillers to ameliorate several characteristics. In the present study, two series of PLA-based nanocomposites filled with biobased kraft-lignin (KL) and tannin (T) in different contents were prepared. A melt–extrusion method was pursued for nanocomposites preparation. The thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposites was examined by Thermogravimetric Analysis, while thermal degradation kinetics was applied to deepen this process. Pyrolysis–Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry was employed to provide more details of the degradation process of PLA filled with the two polyphenolic fillers. It was found that the PLA/lignin nanocomposites show better thermostability than neat PLA, while tannin filler has a small catalytic effect that can reduce the thermal stability of PLA. The calculated Eα value of PLA-T nanocomposite was lower than that of PLA-KL resulting in a substantially higher decomposition rate constant, which accelerate the thermal degradation.

Nanomaterials applied in wound healing: Mechanisms, limitations and perspectives

Internal and external factors cause various types of wounds on the skin. Infections, nonhealing chronic wounds, and aesthetic and functional recovery all cause challenges for clinicians. The development of nanotechnology in biomedicine has brought many new materials, methods and therapeutic targets for the treatment of wounds, which are believed to have great prospects. In this work, the nanomaterials applied in different stages to promote wound healing and systematically expounded their mechanisms were reviewed. Then, the difficulties and defects of the present research and suggested methods for improvement were pointed out. Moreover, based on the current application status of nanomaterials in wound treatment, some new ideas for subsequent studies were proposed and the feasibility of intelligent healing by real-time monitoring, precision regulation, and signal transmission between electronic signals and human nerve signals in the future were discussed. This review will provide valuable directions and spark new thoughts for researchers.

Cold Crystallization Kinetics and Thermal Degradation of PLA Composites with Metal Oxide Nanofillers

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites with antimicrobial fillers have been increasingly explored as food packaging materials that are made of a biobased matrix and can minimize food loss due to spoilage. Some of the most commonly studied fillers are zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this work, nanocomposites with 1 wt.% of each filler were prepared by melt mixing. An extensive study of thermally stimulated processes such as crystallization, nucleation, degradation, and their kinetics was carried out using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). In detail, non-isothermal cold crystallization studies were performed with DSC and polarized light microscopy (PLM), and kinetics were analyzed with multiple equations. The activation energy of the non-isothermal cold crystallization was calculated with the methods of Kissinger and Friedman. The latter was used to also determine the Hoffman–Lauritzen parameters (Kg and U*) by applying the Vyazovkin method. Additionally, effective activation energy and kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition process were determined by applying the isoconversional differential method and multivariate non-linear regression method. According to TGA results, metal oxide nanofillers affected the thermal stability of PLA and caused a decrease in the activation energy values. Moreover, the fillers acted as heterogenous nucleating agents, accelerating the non-isothermal crystallization of PLA, thus reducing its activation energy. It can be concluded that metal oxide nanofillers catalytically affect the thermal degradation and crystallization of PLA samples.

Electrospun nanofibers food packaging: trends and applications in food systems

Food safety is a bottleneck problem. In order to provide information about advanced and unique food packaging technique, this study summarized the advancements of electrospinning technique. Food packaging is a multidisciplinary area involving food science, food engineering, food chemistry, and food microbiology, and the interest in maintaining the freshness and quality of foods has grown considerably. For this purpose, electrospinning technology has gained much attention due to its unique functions and superior processing. Sudden advancements of electrospinning have been rapidly incorporated into research. This review summarized some latest information about food packaging and different materials used for the packaging of various foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and processed items. Also, the use of electrospinning and materials used for the formation of nanofibers are discussed in detail. However, in food industry, the application of electrospun nanofibers is still in its infancy. In this study, different parameters, structures of nanofibers, features and fundamental properties are described briefly, while polymers fabricated through electrospinning with advances in food packaging films are described in detail. Moreover, this comprehensive review focuses on the polymers used for the electrospinning of nanofibers as packaging films and their applications for variety of foods. This will be a valuable source of information for researchers studying various polymers for electrospinning for application in the food packaging industry.

Polyetheretherketone and Its Composites for Bone Replacement and Regeneration

In this article, recent advances in the development, preparation, biocompatibility and mechanical properties of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composites for hard and soft tissue engineering are reviewed. PEEK has been widely employed for fabricating spinal fusions due to its radiolucency, chemical stability and superior sterilization resistance at high temperatures. PEEK can also be tailored into patient-specific implants for treating orbital and craniofacial defects in combination with additive manufacturing process. However, PEEK is bioinert, lacking osseointegration after implantation. Accordingly, several approaches including surface roughening, thin film coating technology, and addition of bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) micro-/nanofillers have been adopted to improve osseointegration performance. The elastic modulus of PEEK is 3.7-4.0 GPa, being considerably lower than that of human cortical bone ranging from 7-30 GPa. Thus, PEEK is not stiff enough to sustain applied stress in load-bearing orthopedic implants. Therefore, HA micro-/nanofillers, continuous and discontinuous carbon fibers are incorporated into PEEK for enhancing its stiffness for load-bearing applications. Among these, carbon fibers are more effective than HA micro-/nanofillers in providing additional stiffness and load-bearing capabilities. In particular, the tensile properties of PEEK composite with 30wt% short carbon fibers resemble those of cortical bone. Hydrophobic PEEK shows no degradation behavior, thus hampering its use for making porous bone scaffolds. PEEK can be blended with hydrophilic polymers such as polyglycolic acid and polyvinyl alcohol to produce biodegradable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications.

The Effectiveness of Nafion-Coated Stainless Steel Surfaces for Inhibiting Bacillus Subtilis Biofilm Formation

Stainless steel is one of most commonly used materials in the world; however, biofilms on the surfaces of stainless steel cause many serious problems. In order to find effective methods of reducing bacterial adhesion to stainless steel, and to investigate the role of electrostatic effects during the formation of biofilms, this study used a stainless steel surface that was negatively charged by being coated with Nafion which was terminated by sulfonic groups. The results showed that the roughness of stainless steel discs coated with 1% Nafion was similar to an uncoated surface; however the hydrophobicity increased, and the Nafion-coated surface reduced the adhesion of Bacillus subtilis by 75% compared with uncoated surfaces. Therefore, a facile way to acquire antibacterial stainless steel was found, and it is proved that electrostatic effects have a significant influence on the formation of biofilms.

Influence of Polysaccharides' Molecular Structure on the Antibacterial Activity and Cytotoxicity of Green Synthesized Composites Based on Silver Nanoparticles and Carboxymethyl-Cellulose

In this paper we report on the influence of polysaccharides' molecular structure on the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of composites based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) immobilized into carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC). These composites were green synthesized from the reduction of silver ions into aqueous solutions of the polysaccharide, using CMC with different degree of substitution (DS) and molecular weight (Mw). The composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as infrared (ATR-FTIR), ultraviolet (UV-Vis), Raman, and X-ray photo-electron (XPS) spectroscopic techniques. The antibacterial activity was evaluated with minimum inhibitory concentration against Enterococcus faecalis. The cytotoxicity of composites was assessed against human gingival fibroblast. Experimental evidence suggests that particle size distribution and morphology of AgNPs change according to the quantity of silver precursor added to the reaction, as well as the DS and Mw of CMC used for composites preparation. This is related to the dispersion of silver precursor into aqueous solutions of the polysaccharide and the formation of Ag-O coordination bonds among AgNPs and COO^- moieties of CMC. Moreover, these coordination bonds modify the ability of nanoparticles to produce and release Ag⁺ into aqueous dispersion, adjusting their antibacterial activity and the induction of cytotoxicity into the tested biological environments.

Properties and Skin Compatibility of Films Based on Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA) Bionanocomposites Incorporating Chitin Nanofibrils (CN)

Nanobiocomposites suitable for preparing skin compatible films by flat die extrusion were prepared by using plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA), and Chitin nanofibrils as functional filler. Chitin nanofibrils (CNs) were dispersed in the blends thanks to the preparation of pre-nanocomposites containing poly(ethylene glycol). Thanks to the use of a melt strength enhancer (Plastistrength) and calcium carbonate, the processability and thermal properties of bionanocomposites films containing CNs could be tuned in a wide range. Moreover, the resultant films were flexible and highly resistant. The addition of CNs in the presence of starch proved not advantageous because of an extensive chain scission resulting in low values of melt viscosity. The films containing CNs or CNs and calcium carbonate resulted biocompatible and enabled the production of cells defensins, acting as indirect anti-microbial. Nevertheless, tests made with Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacter spp. (Gram positive and negative respectively) by the qualitative agar diffusion test did not show any direct anti-microbial activity of the films. The results are explained considering the morphology of the film and the different mechanisms of direct and indirect anti-microbial action generated by the nanobiocomposite based films.

Novel Unsaturated Polyester Nanocomposites via Hybrid 3D POSS-Modified Graphene Oxide Reinforcement: Electro-Technical Application Perspective

The latest trends in technologies has shifted the focus to developing innovative methods for comprehensive property enhancement of the polymer composites with facile and undemanding experimental techniques. This work reports an elementary technique to fabricate high-performance unsaturated polyester-based nanocomposites. It focuses on the interactive effect of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) within the unsaturated polymermatrix. The hybrid framework of POSS-functionalized graphene oxide has been configured via peptide bonding between the aminopropyl isobutyl POSS and graphene oxide. The synergistic effect of POSS and graphene oxide paved the way for a mechanism to inculcate a hybrid framework within the unsaturated polyester (UP) via in situ polymerization to develop UP/GO-POSS nanocomposites. The surface-appended POSS within the graphene oxide boosted its dispersion in the UP matrix, furnishing an enhancement in tensile strength of the UP/GO-POSS composites by 61.9%, thermal decomposition temperature (10% mass loss) by 69.8 °C and electrical conductivity by 10⁸ S/m, in contrast to pure UP. In particular, the homogenous influence of the POSS-modified GO could be vindicated in the surging of the limiting oxygen index (%) in the as-prepared nanocomposites. The inclusive property amelioration vindicates the use of fabricated nanocomposites as high-performance nanomaterials in electrotechnical applications.

Extrusion of Polymer Nanocomposites with Graphene and Graphene Derivative Nanofillers: An Overview of Recent Developments

This review is focused on the recent developments of nanocomposite materials that combine a thermoplastic matrix with different forms of graphene or graphene oxide nanofillers. In all cases, the manufacturing method of the composite materials has been melt-processing, in particular, twin-screw extrusion, which can then be followed by injection molding. The advantages of this processing route with respect to other alternative methods will be highlighted. The results point to an increasing interest in biodegradable matrices such as polylactic acid (PLA) and graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide, rather than graphene. The reasons for this will also be discussed.

Visible-Light Active Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials with Bactericidal Properties

This article provides an overview of current research into the development, synthesis, photocatalytic bacterial activity, biocompatibility and cytotoxic properties of various visible-light active titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) and their nanocomposites. To achieve antibacterial inactivation under visible light, TiO2 NPs are doped with metal and non-metal elements, modified with carbonaceous nanomaterials, and coupled with other metal oxide semiconductors. Transition metals introduce a localized d-electron state just below the conduction band of TiO2 NPs, thereby narrowing the bandgap and causing a red shift of the optical absorption edge into the visible region. Silver nanoparticles of doped TiO2 NPs experience surface plasmon resonance under visible light excitation, leading to the injection of hot electrons into the conduction band of TiO2 NPs to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for bacterial killing. The modification of TiO2 NPs with carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets also achieve the efficient creation of ROS under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, titanium-based alloy implants in orthopedics with enhanced antibacterial activity and biocompatibility can be achieved by forming a surface layer of Ag-doped titania nanotubes. By incorporating TiO2 NPs and Cu-doped TiO2 NPs into chitosan or the textile matrix, the resulting polymer nanocomposites exhibit excellent antimicrobial properties that can have applications as fruit/food wrapping films, self-cleaning fabrics, medical scaffolds and wound dressings. Considering the possible use of visible-light active TiO2 nanomaterials for various applications, their toxicity impact on the environment and public health is also addressed.
