An Estimate of the Onset of Beadless Character of Electrospun Nanofibers Using Rheological Characterization

Explicit Expressions for a Mean Nanofibre Diameter Using Input Parameters in the Process of Electrospinning

The process of electrospinning is subject to a variety of input parameters ranging from the characterization of polymers and solvents, the resulting solutions, the geometrical configuration of the device, including its process parameters, and ending with crucial parameters such as temperature and humidity. It is not possible to expect that functional expressions relating all these parameters can be derived in a common description. Nevertheless, it is possible to fix the majority of these parameters to derive explicit relations for a restricted number of entry parameters such that it contributes to the partial elimination of the classical trial-and-error method saving time and financial costs. However, several contributions providing such results are rather moderate. Special attention is provided to fibre diameter approximation as this parameter strongly influences the application of nanofibrous mats in various instances such as air filtration, tissue engineering, and drug delivery systems. Various difficulties connected with the derivation of these explicit relations are presented and discussed in detail.

Characterization of Epoxy-Based Rapid Mold with Profiled Conformal Cooling Channel

Based on the experience of the foundry industry, reducing the demolding time is the key for mass production of wax patterns with sophisticated geometries. Integration of numerical simulation and rapid tooling technology for decreasing the time to market is essential in advanced manufacturing technology. However, characterization of epoxy-based rapid molds with a profiled conformal cooling channel (PCCC) using computer-aided engineering simulation of the epoxy-based rapid mold with PCCC was not found in the literature. In this study, epoxy-based rapid molds with PCCC were characterized numerically and experimentally. The cooling performance of wax injection molds with two different kinds of cross-sections of the cooling channel was investigated. Four pairs of injection molds with PCCC were implemented using four different kinds of material formulations. It was found that the cooling performance of the PCCC was better than a circular conformal cooling channel (CCCC) since the PCCC maintained a more uniform and steady cooling performance of injection-molded product than CCCC. Epoxy resin added with 41 vol.% Cu powder seems to be a cost-effective empirical material formulation in terms of cooling time and material costs. This empirical material formulation provided an injection mold with low material cost and good cooling performance simultaneously compared to an injection mold fabricated with commercial material. The cooling performance could reach 88% of that of the injection mold fabricated with commercial material. The material cost of making the injection mold was only about 60% of that of the injection mold fabricated with commercial material. The coolant flow rate had no significant effect on the cooling time, whereas the cooling time of the wax pattern was affected by coolant temperature significantly.

Antibacterial Filtration Membranes Based on PVDF-co-HFP Nanofibers with the Addition of Medium-Chain 1-Monoacylglycerols

The efficiency of filtration membranes is substantially lowered by bacterial attachments and potential fouling processes, which reduce their durability and lifecycle. The antibacterial and antifouling properties exhibited by the added materials play a substantial role in their application. We tested a material poly(vinylidene fluoride)-co-hexafluoropropylene (PDVF-co-HFP) based on an electrospun copolymer, where an agent was incorporated with a small amount of ester of glycerol consecutively with caprylic, capric, and lauric acids. Each of these three materials differing in the esters (1-monoacylglycerol, 1-MAG) used was prepared with three weighted concentrations of 1-MAG (1, 2, and 3 wt %). The presence of 1-MAG with an amphiphilic structure resulted in the hydrophilic character of the prepared materials that contributed to the filtration performance. The tested materials (membranes) were characterized with rheological, optical (scanning electron microscopy, SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and other methods to evaluate antibacterial and antifouling activities. The pure water flux was 6 times higher than that of the neat PVDF-co-HFP membrane when the added 1-MAG attained only 1 wt %. It was experimentally shown that the PVDF-co-HFP/1-MAG membrane with high wettability improved antibacterial activity and antifouling ability. This membrane is highly promising for water treatment due to the safety of antibacterial 1-MAG additives.
