Supramolecular Benzophenone-Based Photoinitiator for Spatially-Resolved Polymerization

Benzophenone-based materials remain widely used as photoinitiators for ultraviolet light-induced free radical polymerizations. Traditionally, polymerization is spatially controlled using top-down techniques such as photomasks, which produce well-defined polymeric films. In contrast, we present an alternative method for controlling polymerization by employing supramolecular materials to localize the photoinitiator. This approach uses benzophenone-functionalized dipeptides that are specifically tuned to enable supramolecular gel noodle formation, which act as structural templates. We show that polymerization of acrylate monomers around the gel noodles can increase the Young's modulus by up to 2 orders of magnitude and produce mechanically robust structures that can be handled. The self-assembly of the supramolecular photoinitiators is also explored using viscosity and SAXS measurements, providing an understanding of why only 4BPAcFF successfully forms gel noodles. Our method offers a simple yet effective technique for localizing polymerization, enabling fine-tuning of mechanical properties and the fabrication of intricate designs such as hollow-core structures.

Mechanical Deformation Behavior of Polymer Blend Thin Films

Examining the mechanical properties of polymer thin films is crucial for high-performance applications such as displays, coatings, sensors, and thermal management. It is important to design thin film microstructures that excel in high-demand situations without compromising mechanical integrity. Here, a polymer blend of polystyrene (PS) and polyisoprene (PI) is used as a model to explore microscale deformation behavior under uniaxial mechanical testing. Six thin film compositions ranging from pure PS to a 4.5:5.5 ratio of PS to PI are fabricated. The thin films are deformed under compression, tension, and cyclic loadings, while monitoring the behavior utilizing a micromechanical stage and optical microscopy. To calculate the plane strain modulus, a strain-induced elastic buckling instability technique is employed. The results show that as the PI concentration increases, the plane strain modulus of the films decreases while the fracture strain increases. For the 4.5:5.5 ratio of PS to PI with a continuous rubbery PI phase, the thin films show major recoverable mechanical performance. This behavior is attributed to the mechanical strength of glassy PS combined with the strain energy absorption capability of rubbery PI, enabling elastic recovery. These fundamental observations provide valuable insights for designing mechanically resilient thin films for coatings and flexible devices.

Flexural strength of dental adhesives with different photoinitiator systems

Background

The aim of this study was to investigate the flexural strength of dental adhesives containing different combinations of photoinitiators systems.

Material and Methods

The organic matrix of the experimental adhesives was created using a blend of monomers: 50% by weight bisphenol-A glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) and 50% triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). The photoinitiators utilized were camphorquinone (CQ) and phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (BAPO), with diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP) and 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) as co-initiators. These photoinitiators and co-initiators were integrated into the organic matrix at a concentration of 0.5% by mass, resulting in the formation of 6 groups (n=12): CQ/DMAEMA (control); CQ/DMAEMA/DPIHFP; BAPO; BAPO/DMAEMA; BAPO/DPIHFP and BAPO/DMAEMA/DPIHFP. Samples measuring 7 mm in length, 2 mm in width, and 1 mm in height were prepared and subjected to a three-point flexural test. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test (α=0.05).

Results

Results indicated that groups incorporating BAPO and DPIHFP exhibited higher flexural strength compared to those with CQ and DMAEMA. The BAPO/DPIHFP group achieved the highest mean flexural strength values (p<0.001).

Conclusions

These findings suggest that using adhesive systems with alternative photoinitiators and co-initiators can lead to superior flexural strength compared to conventional systems. Key words:Photoinitiators, Dentin-bonding agents, Light-curing.

Surface Functionalization of Bamboo via Photo-Grafting Tannic Acid for Enhanced Silver Ion Loading Properties

Photo-grafting is a gentle, simple, and precise approach to incorporating specific functional molecules for the surface functionalization of substrates. In this work, ultraviolet (UV)-induced tannic acid (TA) grafting onto the surface of bamboo was proposed as a viable strategy for functionalizing bamboo. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) clearly indicated that TA was successfully introduced to the bamboo's surface. The optimal conditions for the grafting reaction were determined to be 15 mM Methyl-2-benzoylbenzoate (BB), 30 mM TA, 20 min, and a pH = 8. Under these conditions, the amount of TA grafted onto the bamboo's surface was measured to be 19.98 μg/cm2. Results from Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) analyses showed that the silver ion loading capacity of tannic acid-grafted bamboo was significantly improved compared to that of raw bamboo and tannic acid-impregnated bamboo. Furthermore, the presence of TA grafted on the bamboo's surface exhibited a positive correlation with the loading of silver ions, indicating that grafted TA plays an important role in the surface functionalization of bamboo. We believe that photo-grafted TA may help generate multifunctional bamboo with diverse properties.

Engineering Photo-Cross-Linkable MXene-Based Hydrogels: Durable Conductive Biomaterials for Electroactive Tissues and Interfaces

Light-cured conductive hydrogels have attracted immense interest in the regeneration of electroactive tissues and bioelectronic interfaces. Despite the unique properties of MXene (MX), its light-blocking effect in the range of 300-600 nm hinders the efficient cross-linking of photocurable hydrogels. In this study, we investigated the photo-cross-linking process of MX-gelatin methacrylate (GelMa) composites with different types of photoinitiators and MX concentrations to prepare biocompatible, injectable, conductive, and photocurable composite hydrogels. The examined photoinitiators were Eosin Y, Irgacure 2959 (Type I), and lithium phenyl-2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl phosphinate (Type II). The light-blocking effect of MX strongly affected the thickness, pore structure, swelling ratio, degradation, and mechanical properties of the light-cured hydrogels. Uniform distribution of MX in the hydrogel matrix was achieved at concentrations up to 0.04 wt % but the film thickness and curing times varied depending on the type of photoinitiator. It was feasible to prepare thin films (0.5 mm) by employing Type I photoinitiators under a relatively long light irradiation (4-5 min) while thick films with centimeter sizes could be rapidly cured by using Type II photoinitiator (<60 s). The mechanical properties, including elastic modulus, toughness, and stress to break for the Type II hydrogels were significantly superior (up to 300%) to those of Type I hydrogels depending on the MX concentration. The swelling ratio was also remarkably higher (648-1274%). A conductivity of about 1 mS/cm was attained at 0.1 mg/mL MX for the composite hydrogel cured by the Type I photoinitiator. In vitro cytocompatibility assays determined that the hydrogels promoted cell viability, metabolic activity, and robust proliferation of C2C12 myoblasts, which indicated their potential to support muscle cell growth during myogenesis. The developed photocurable GelMa-MX hydrogels have the potential to serve as bioactive and conductive scaffolds to modulate cellular functions and for tissue-device interfacing.

Chitosan scaffolds: Expanding horizons in biomedical applications

Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide from chitin, shows promise as a biomaterial for various biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial activity, and ease of modification. This review overviews "chitosan scaffolds" use in diverse biomedical applications. It emphasizes chitosan's structural and biological properties and explores fabrication methods like gelation, electrospinning, and 3D printing, which influence scaffold architecture and mechanical properties. The review focuses on chitosan scaffolds in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, highlighting their role in bone, cartilage, skin, nerve, and vascular tissue regeneration, supporting cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Investigations into incorporating bioactive compounds, growth factors, and nanoparticles for improved therapeutic effects are discussed. The review also examines chitosan scaffolds in drug delivery systems, leveraging their prolonged release capabilities and ability to encapsulate medicines for targeted and controlled drug delivery. Moreover, it explores chitosan's antibacterial activity and potential for wound healing and infection management in biomedical contexts. Lastly, the review discusses challenges and future objectives, emphasizing the need for improved scaffold design, mechanical qualities, and understanding of interactions with host tissues. In summary, chitosan scaffolds hold significant potential in various biological applications, and this review underscores their promising role in advancing biomedical science.

Surface Modification of PP and PBT Nonwoven Membranes for Enhanced Efficiency in Photocatalytic MB Dye Removal and Antibacterial Activity

In this study, we developed highly efficient nonwoven membranes by modifying the surface of polypropylene (PP) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) through photo-grafting polymerization. The nonwoven membrane surfaces of PP and PBT were grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of benzophenone (BP) and metal salt. We immobilized tertiary amine groups as BP synergists on commercial nonwoven membranes to improve PP and PBT surfaces. In situ Ag, Au, and Au/Ag nanoparticle formation enhances the nonwoven membrane surface. SEM, FTIR, and EDX were used to analyze the surface. We evaluated modified nonwoven membranes for photocatalytic activity by degrading methylene blue (MB) under LED and sunlight. Additionally, we also tested modified membranes for antibacterial activity against E. coli. The results indicated that the modified membranes exhibited superior efficiency in removing MB from water. The PBT showed the highest efficiency in dye removal, and bimetallic nanoparticles were more effective than monometallic. Modified membranes exposed to sunlight had higher efficiency than those exposed to LED light, with the PBT/Au/Ag membrane showing the highest dye removal at 97% within 90 min. The modified membranes showed reuse potential, with dye removal efficiency decreasing from 97% in the first cycle to 85% in the fifth cycle.

A practical perspective for chromatic orthogonality for implementing in photolithography

Theoretically, it is more challenging to anticipate the conversion and selectivity of a photochemical experiment compared to thermally generated reactivity. This is due to the interaction of light with a photoreactive substrate. Photochemical reactions do not yet receive the same level of broad analytical study. Here, we close this research gap by presenting a methodology for statistically forecasting the time-dependent progression of photoreactions using widely available LEDs. This study uses NiS/ZnO in perovskite (MAPbI₃) solar cells as an additive (5 volume %). The effect of monolithic perovskite solar cells (mPSCs) on forecasting the wavelength of LEDs has been carefully investigated using various characterization methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity was analyzed by measuring the voltage produced. Various factors like selectivity, stability and sensitivity were also examined. This work provides a new perspective to validate NiS/ZnO photocatalysts for predicting the wavelength of different light sources and to apply in photolithography.

A Fusion of Molecular Imprinting Technology and Siloxane Chemistry: A Way to Advanced Hybrid Nanomaterials

Molecular imprinting technology is a well-known strategy to synthesize materials with a predetermined specificity. For fifty years, the "classical" approach assumed the creation of "memory sites" in the organic polymer matrix by a template molecule that interacts with the functional monomer prior to the polymerization and template removal. However, the phenomenon of a material's "memory" provided by the "footprint" of the chemical entity was first observed on silica-based materials nearly a century ago. Through the years, molecular imprinting technology has attracted the attention of many scientists. Different forms of molecularly imprinted materials, even on the nanoscale, were elaborated, predominantly using organic polymers to induce the "memory". This field has expanded quickly in recent years, providing versatile tools for the separation or detection of numerous chemical compounds or even macromolecules. In this review, we would like to emphasize the role of the molecular imprinting process in the formation of highly specific siloxane-based nanomaterials. The distinct chemistry of siloxanes provides an opportunity for the facile functionalization of the surfaces of nanomaterials, enabling us to introduce additional properties and providing a way for vast applications such as detectors or separators. It also allows for catalyzing chemical reactions providing microreactors to facilitate organic synthesis. Finally, it determines the properties of siloxanes such as biocompatibility, which opens the way to applications in drug delivery and nanomedicine. Thus, a brief outlook on the chemistry of siloxanes prior to the discussion of the current state of the art of siloxane-based imprinted nanomaterials will be provided. Those aspects will be presented in the context of practical applications in various areas of chemistry and medicine. Finally, a brief outlook of future perspectives for the field will be pointed out.

Novel Copper Complexes as Visible Light Photoinitiators for the Synthesis of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks (IPNs)

This work is devoted to the study of two copper complexes (Cu) bearing pyridine ligands, which were synthesized, evaluated and tested as new visible light photoinitiators for the free radical photopolymerization (FRP) of acrylates functional groups in thick and thin samples upon light-emitting diodes (LED) at 405 and 455 nm irradiation. These latter wavelengths are considered to be safe to produce polymer materials. The photoinitiation abilities of these organometallic compounds were evaluated in combination with an iodonium (Iod) salt and/or amine (e.g., N-phenylglycine—NPG). Interestingly, high final conversions and high polymerization rates were obtained for both compounds using two and three-component photoinitiating systems (Cu1 (or Cu2)/Iodonium salt (Iod) (0.1%/1% w/w) and Cu1 (or Cu2)/Iod/amine (0.1%/1%/1% w/w/w)). The new proposed copper complexes were also used for direct laser write experiments involving a laser diode at 405 nm, and for the photocomposite synthesis with glass fibers using a UV-conveyor at 395 nm. To explain the obtained polymerization results, different methods and characterization techniques were used: steady-state photolysis, real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (RT-FTIR), emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
